You are Captain WILLIAM PIERCE, a combat rescue officer of the United States Air Force.

It had only been a few days since the start of Operation Blue Dragon, but Wonsan was already in American hands and the Marines were pushing deep inland in their drive to Pyonyang. As suspected, the bulk of the Chinese fighting force was down at the 38th, and the reserve forces stationed up here simply weren't prepared for such a massive offensive. Your own side's planners weren't expecting such rapid progress either, and in most cases advances were halted not because of enemy action, but due to the Marines outrunning their supply convoys.

However, Pyonyang was a different story. The IJN took Namp'o easily enough, but met fanatical resistance from the newly formed Korean Peoples' Army in the unofficial capital. There was still fierce urban fighting going on in the city, and the Japanese had switched to tactics to surrounding Pyonyang to cut it off from Chinese support. Having to rely on siege tactics did not bode well for that side of the front.

Down south, the IJA and Korean Defense Force were making slow and steady progress north, chasing the retreating Chinese as they attempted to escape the encirclement.

As for you, you and your squadron were rebased in Wonsan Airport, now repurposed into a military airfield. There weren't as many creature comforts as Tokyo, and you were discouraged from leaving the base due to the danger of rogue Chinese units and Korean rebels. However, at least you didn't have to constantly fly across the sea anymore.

Oh right, and Nungesser actually showed up, too. That was a bit surprising, actually.

You decide to go check up on your witches first. They're not too hard to find, as they're all gathered at the hangar, inspecting their strikers.

"Hey girls." You say. "Anything going on?"

"Not much, I'm afraid." Janice smiles. "Though Kelsey did tell us to keep an eye on Nun until he can sort things out with the French."

You turn to see Nungesser tied to a chair, with both Tarin and Red flanking her, almost daring Nungesser to try something.

"So is that what 'keeping an eye' on someone means now?" You raise an eyebrow.

"Well, you should know how Nun gets at times." Janice chuckles."Orders are orders, after all."

"Uh huh." You look over to see Jetstream on the phone. Whatever it was seemed to be very important.

"I hear she's talking to her father." Janice whispers. "He's an IJA general leading the offensive on the 38th."

"Ah." You nod and see Euclid and Ghost being fitted into their strikers. "Something I should know about?"

"Just a maintenance run." Janice says. "Euclid is still complaining her strikers don't feel right. Ghost volunteered to be her chase witch."

"Ah."

"Oh, and Laika is here, too!" Janice beams. "She's actually in the back with Sokolov right now, fine tuning some instruments."

"Ah! Capitaine!" Nungesser's expression brightens when she sees you approach. "Am I allowed to go free yet?"

"I haven't gotten any word of that." You sigh as you get your own chair and sit just across from her. "Nun, I appreciate you saving us out there, but I really have to ask, how the HELL did you get here?"

"Oh, well, that's quite a story..." Nungesser chuckles. "I don't think you'd want to hear it."

"I'm in no hurry, but just tell it as best you can." You sign.

"Well." Nungesser smiles. "It all started when Dassault gave me a new experimental set of strikers to test. In addition to being faster and more agile, they were also supposed to much more magic efficient. Now, combined with that, and my naturally large magic reserves, I figured it would be possible for me to cross the Atlantic unassisted."

"Wait wait wait." You blink. "You FLEW across the Atlantic, ALONE?"

"Wasn't that big a deal, honestly." Nungesser shrugs. "The problem was getting across North America. Canada is too cold and you Americans would be sure to intercept me and return me to France if they caught me in their airspace, so I landed in New England and er, let's just say I found 'alternate' transportation to the West Coast. Then it was just a matter of island hopping over to Japan!"

"Negative." You say flatly. "Orders are orders."

"Ah, understandable, Capitaine." Nungesser leans back on her chair. "Well then, I suppose you have other pressing matters to attend to."

"Come on, Janice, let's check on Laika." You say, motioning for her to follow.

"Gladly!" Janice smiles.

"Say hi to her for me, too!" Nungesser cranes her head around.

You head to the back of the hangar, where you see Laika sitting in a chair, her eyes closed. Moving closer, you could see that she was plugged into a test version of Sokolov's COFFIN 2.0 interface.

"Ah! Captain! I didn't expect to see you here!" Sokolov pokes his head out from behind a large, beeping machine. "If you're here to see Laika, we're just finishing up another synchronization test. We'll be done shortly!"

"So, cooking up anything new, Doc?" You ask, glancing at all the collected machinery.

"Yes, yes. In addition to COFFIN 2.0, I was looking to see if there was any way to expand the applications for Laika's special ability. It's really something special!"

"Which is?" You raise an eyebrow.

"Well, you remember how all witches have a special ability unique to themselves?" Sokolov says.

"Of course. We're taught that in grade school." You roll your eyes. "And I've met my fair share of witches, as you can see."

"Ah yes yes, of course!" Sokolov nods absentmindedly. "Anyways, Laika's ability here is what I've dubbed Third Eye. It gives her amazing predictive powers."

"Like, she can see the future?" You raise an eyebrow.

"No, nothing silly like that!" Sokolov scoffs. "Her mind can not only calculate all possible trajectories of objects in motion, but also allow her to visualize these movements as well, before they happen!"

"Sounds powerful." You admit.

"Yes, but the one weakness to that ability was that it only worked on things withing your direct lien of sight!" Sokolov is getting more excited now. "But COFFIN 2.0 eliminates that weakness, because it gives Laika a full 360 degree field of view!"

Ah, so that explained how nothing could seem to hit her in the air.

"And you're trying to expand on this?"

(cont)
>>
>>35784303
"Yes. Using data I'm collecting from her sessions, I'm hoping I can develop avionics that can tell pilots where a plane or missile will be, even before the enemy!"

"Sounds pretty ambitious." You whistle. "You always take inspiration from witch powers?"

"Why shouldn't I? Witches are capable of amazing feats. If the regular man could even harness a fraction of it..."

"Yeah, yeah, I understand." You laugh. "So, anything else?"

"Well, I do have time to devote to another project." Sokolov says. "Perhaps something based on Tarin's optical camouflage, or maybe something to counter those Chinese superheavy tanks I've been hearing about. Then again, Christina has told me about a revolutionary weapon system her husband is working on that could use field testing...

"The way you say 'revolutionary weapon' intrigues me." You say. "What are we talking about here?"

"Directed energy!" Sokolov says happily.

Both you and Janice just kind of stare at him.

"Ah, how do does a layperson say it... LASERS!" He says .

"Whoa, wait, you mean like Martian weaponry?" You blink.

"No no no, those are MASERS. That's a completely different thing!" Sokolov waves it off. "Lasers will be the weapon of the future!"

"How far along is it?" You ask.

"Well, the current prototype are so large you can only realistically fit them on a carrier or battleship sized vessel. However, both Christina and her husband have been working hard to miniaturize the technology. One stopgap they're considering is using magic to power the weapon instead of a conventional powerplant."

"Sounds incredibly zany."

Suddenly, there's a louder beeping sound, and you can see the interface rod at the back of Laika's neck retract. She slowly flutters her eyes open as if waking from a nap, and immediately brights when she sees you.

"Willy! Janice!" She sits up and nearly falls out of her seat, but you manage to catch her just in time. "I haven't seen you in FOREVER!"

"It's only been a few days." Janice chuckles.

"FOREVER!" Laika pouts.

"Haha, sorry about that, Laika. It's been real busy for us." You laugh.

"All right, let's go." You sigh. "Janice, you hold down the fort here, all right?"

"Of course." Janice smiles.

You head out of the hangar and catch a ride to the main terminal. Over head, you can see the distant silhouettes of Euclid and Ghost circling the airport, while planes and helicopters both large and small continually land and take off. Finally, you arrive at the main terminal, and head for one of the lounges that has been re-appropriated into a briefing room. Inside, you see a number of pilots, bomber crews, and other personnel gathered. At the head of them stood Colonel Kelsey himself, a grim look on his face.

"All right, since it appears everybody is here, we'll get this started." Kelsey motions for one of the airmen to turn down the lights, while he turns on a projector screen. "Several days ago, at the outset of Operation Blue Dragon, we received visual confirmation of China's new superheavy tank, codenamed 'Overlord.'"

He then flips to grainy aerial photographs of that massive tank you saw several days earlier.

"We've tasked our aerial recon to keep tabs on it for as long as possible. While we've currently lost track of it, our best guess is that it's pulling back to secure lines, no doubt to be used in a counterattack."

"Do we know anything about its capabilities?" One pilot asks.

"Our analysts believe, judging from visual cues, that Overlord is armed with dual 180mm cannons. It's armor is also thick enough to repel most conventional weaponry. While we don't believe they have the knowledge or means to manufacture composite armor, there's no doubt that armor is thick enough that only depleted uranium or high end ATGMs have a shot of penetrating it."

"Then what's the plan?" Another pilot asks.

"As of now, the Air Force's priority is to hunt down and destroy Overlord. Command doesn't want to risk sending ground assets after it, especially since we know so little of its capabilities. Marine and Navy aviators will provide support for the ground forces in the meantime. As of now, all ground attack birds will be on standby, with full anti-armor loadouts. Overlord is a destroy on sight. Is that clear?"

"Yes, sir!" The entire room announces.

"All right then. Dismissed." Kelseys grunts. "Captain Pierce, may I have a word with you?"

"What do you need, sir?" You ask as the rest of the pilots begin filtering out of the briefing room.

"Pierce, I have to admit, I'm in a bit of a pickle, here." Kelsey sighs. "As you've probably figured, Colonel Hessler and Lieutenant Konig have joined up with the Marines and have temporary field command of one of their tank witch units. Problem is, Command can't figure out what to do with them."

"I don't see how this concerns me, sir."

"You're one of the few Americans here who've had the most contact with them." Kelsey says. "Plus, you'll be running joint operations with them, so it WILL concern you in the future."

"Okay, so what's the issue?"

"Some Marine commanders want to have Hessler lead a spearhead to drive straight to Kangdong." Kelsey explains. "It sits on a major crossroad just east of Pyonyang. It's a critical area that the Chinese could use to funnel in support, or retreat from the 38th. Taking this will block them, as well as put us one step closer to Pyonyang. However, other commanders want to have Hessler sent north specifically to hunt Overlord and secure our flank. Your word carries some weight, so they'll consider whatever you go for. Which would you take?"

Two birds with one stone.

which means we won't have to go looking for it.
>>
>>35785792

It would if we could but likely, we can expect the crew to self-destruct the thing before it gets captured.

The transmission.

If we can figure out the final drive system that lets a superheavy *dance* like an overlord, we can build our own superheavies - or make improvements that make superheavies feasible and commonplace.

Doesn't have to be tanks or heavy armor

Could be superheavy artillery, or superheavy resupply vehicles - more efficient than air, more flexible than trains, and faster than trucks.

"So it's decided?"

"I'll forward our official opinion to the Marines." Kelsey nods. "That should tip the scales. Plus Command is eager to link up with the Japanese. Taking out the bulk of China's forces here should force them to come to the negotiating table."

"Argh, I was hoping you wouldn't remind me of that." Kelsey groans as he clutches his head. "A serious headache this turned out to be. The French are used to Nungesser going AWOL, but flying basically to the other side of the planet? Violating at least three or four different nations' airspaces? Not to mention she practically stole a pair of experimental strikers based on their latest fighter. It's a wonder they're just 'politely' recalling her and not sending an army of MPs."

"I'm not sure she wants to go back, sir." You sigh.

But Anon, a man who won't fuck is a man who won't fight. Going by that line of logic...

Well, if we take Fronk's stand on the issue...

I'm on the fence.

I say we take all of the funding for the T-28

And transfer it to developing a moving RX-78-2.

"Can you convince them to let Nungesser help us?" You ask. "As you said, we need every witch we can get. I think having one of France's top witch aces here will help us a lot."

"Possibly." Kelsey nods. "We get a fighting witch, and the French can save face by saying they planned for this to happen."

"You mention how the Germans are contributing here."

"Ah yes, that would be sure to tip things in our favor." Kelsey laughs. "If there's anything we can count on, it's old European rivalries!"

"Plus, we got something they don't." You grin evilly. "Bullseye."

"Truly, we've found something absolutely terrifying." Kelsey wipes a tear from his eye. "I'll pass this to the brass. Nobody wants to make a big stink out of this."

Suddenly, Red bursts into the room, clearly out of breath.

"CAP!" She gasps, and then see's Kelsey next to you. "Oh, hey Uncle."

"Rachel." Kelsey raises an eyebrow.

"Sorry! Squadron business!" She says before turning back to you. "Um, Nun broke loose."

"Aw damn." You shake your head. "Is Bullseye accounted for?"

"Jetstream and Janice are out looking for him while Tarin tracks Nun but... no luck so far."

"Well, come on. Better hope she doesn't break our pilot too badly." You chuckle.

Well, things were certainly getting interesting now...

>And that's it for tonight! As always, next thread is next week. Don't forget to catch Ace Combat this Tuesday and Friday, and Cyberpunk Idols on Saturday!
