Second Verse, Part 1

It is the Year of Our Lord, 1134.

You are Wilhelm, Lord of Ramla.

Ramla is a farming land, a quite little town with a tall round tower in its centre. In the days of Saracen rule it had been a mosque, called the White Mosque, but now it served as the seat of the lordship. Your seat. It was tall, with a walled courtyard before it. A structure of simple beauty.

The town itself was not so splendid. In older days it had been a happy walled community, but earthquakes had cracked the walls and displaced many people. The populations had fled, leaving a shadow of its former community. Still, in it you saw the seed of something. A beginning.

The people eyed you warily as you approached with your soldiers, in company with Count High and his men. You had been told these people were mostly of the Greek Church. They had that Syrian look about them, with their women dressed in long coverings and men all bearded. You could not tell Christian from Muslim sometimes in this land.

The town reeve was a man named Xenophanes. He bowed as you dismounted, a pleasant smile on his bearded face. The representative of the peasant community in your court.
>>
What other officials had been here had been dismissed on the death of Lord Baldwin, either returned with his widow back to the north, or fled into another court's service. You had heard some thought you a schemer, and a tad dishonourable in the manner you had acquired these lands. They spoke of murder.

"I leave you with Tancred, and his men," Count Hugh said, "They'll help you secure this land. Sabeen too you can keep for a season. Be careful of Egyptian raiders my friend. If you need anything, you can call on me. But remember that others will also be watching. A lord must stand on his own two feet."

You nod, that made perfect sense. He spent only a day in your holdings, helping you get acquainted with the locals and the landscape. It was surrounded by yellowed grass and quite dry by your standards, the plains a field of slight dips and rises. It was said both lions and leopards could be found here from time to time, pestering the farmers. And bandits, in the border country where rulership of both Frank and Saracen waned.

Lord Baldwin had done little to manage his realm, spending more time in the court of Jaffa or Jerusalem. A stranger in his own holdings, and much disrepair had accord as a result.

Of your court you needed to fill these positions. nominate or send for someone from further afield:

> seneschal
> court physician
> court troubadour
> marshal
> constable
>>
>crusader quest starts
>need to get to bed for work in 5 hours
Truly suffering.

Marshal and constable we can manage from our bros, maybe senechal too. Physician will probably require sending for one though.

We are of course our own troubadour, fuck the haters.
>>
>>35785939
Might I ask what the difference between marshal and constable here?
>>
>>35786008
I think constable keeps the peace (proto-cop/lawman) while a marshal manages the troops/is a clearly military position.
>>
>>35786008
Marshal is concerned with the external security of the area. Constable is concerned with the internal security. Similar skills are required.
>>
>>35786032
Pretty much this. The Marshal will also be the guy who trains your soldiers.

Think of it a bit like Crusader Kings 2.
>>
>>35785939

Mmm, let's see, the one thing we definitely don't need is a court troubadour.

I think I'll go with seneschal as a good start to put out internal affairs in order.
>>
>>35785939
Constable, Sabeen& Tancred, one for each religion.
Marshal, Solomon. (Aided by Hugo)
Honestly I have no idea otherwise.
>>
>>35785939
>nominate or send for someone from further afield

I'm assuming the second is to get some nameless locals from around the area to administer?

How common is it to get a levantine knight appointed to those posts listed or are they too low in station?

What are the possible applicable skills of our retinue like the irish lasses?
>>
>>35786076

Ah, fuck I misread the post.

I'll go with sending for a senechal first before anything. Going to think about the rest for a minute.
>>
>>35786067
Who was appointed before this? Can we do a talent-check among the people living here?
>>
>>35786078
I think Franz might be the better constable (did he serve our father in a similar position or did I imagine that) and we know he's totally loyal. Plus, a grizzled old lawman is obviously best.
>>
>>35785939
>> seneschal

>>
>>35785921
Question: what does Deus Vulture actually mean?

I tried searching it up on good Ol' Google translate but it came up with nothing.
>>
>>35786110
Sabeen/Franz then? I think having a Muslim representative in the higher-ups would go far to help us in some areas
>>
>>35785939
Let's go find/send for a seneschal. It's an important post, but I'd think it would be an insult to any of our male companions to assign them the position and I don't think it would be proper for one of our to female companions to take it.
>>
Okay, should have extended the OP a bit.

Let's test drive.

> send for a seneschal

Roll 1d100+30 pfennings
>>
>>35786098
I'm worried about getting a plant though - we did just catch a lot of political attention. Are any of our companions educated enough for it?
>>
>>35785939
> seneschal: Send for
> court physician: Send for
> court troubadour: Low priority
> marshal: Solomon, aided by Sabeen and Hugo
> constable: Etienne, aided by Tancred and Franz.

I figure Etienne would be more acceptable due to his status as knight, but please correct me if I'm wrong.

We're left with 49 pfennings and we can't afford any more already

This is all I can find though.
>>
>>35786351
Marshal: Solomon (Hugo assists)
Constable: Sabeen / Franz (To help religious tensions)
>>
>>35786337

Yea. Considering what I saw of the constable back when we killed chiri's owner, I'm actually wondering if appointing a full knight to the position is considered an insult. Since the constable there looked like a man at arms.

I'm still going with Solomon for Marshall and Etienne for Constable.

I'd be open to Tancred as constable, but I'd rather not overwhelm old Franz with too much work.

HF, is it safe to assume the Hospitallers haven't build all dem fancy castles yet?
>>
You enter the courtyard of your new lands. It's half a martial square, half a garden. Ivy climbs the walls and trees bearing fat fruit hang around the edges, perfuming the place with a very sweet scent. Some household servants were working to remove the ivy, and when they saw you, stopped and bowed.

A chair is set up for you under the shade of one of those broad, low trees, protecting you from the hot sun.

"What's your order?" Tancred asked with a fist to his heart.

You needed to give orders, to get this place in order. And to do that you'd need more than the men you had present. You fish out coin enough and hand it to the soldier.

"We'll need to send for suitably trained men," You said, "See it done."

"As you will," he said.

Some positions seemed obvious. You had a good marshal already.

Solomon nods when you give him the position. "I'll whip the local boys into shape, and deal with any outsiders," he said, patting his shotel.

The constable was a harder position, you felt. Sabeen seemed a good candidate, but she was a woman. In the saddle she was as good as any man, but how would the old fathers deal with an unveiled girl in arms?

You decide Tancred is the better option, and have him marked for the job.

It is a month before the sent for men would arrive.

You decide to spend your time in your study, drafting letters of greeting to the local lords, and letters of invitation to those further afield. One you spend a great deal of time on in is a letter to Archbishop Albero in Trier, as well as your father in Koblenz. It took you longer than you thought to draft them properly, extending to each an invitation to visit your new holdings. Your father had never been much of a land owner. He might be impressed by your lordship. He wasn't impressed by much.

To those near and far you extend a letter of greetings and offerings of hospitality. Count Hugh had left you with a list of knights and lords that you should do well to greet, and to each of them you send a small note offering your hospitality in the upcoming harvest festival.

It was no casual matter, once you were satisfied with the contents of the letters you sent them off with all haste. It would be no way of knowing for a year or more if the letters reached Germany.

For the rest of the time you got to know your land a little. Solomon had nothing kind to say of the young men he had been given.

"They don't know a spear tip from an asshole," he scowled over dinner.

"They will improve," Sabeen chided, "With training."

"I had to send five home they were so incompetent," Solomon drained his horn and filled it again.

You ate together at a long table in the White Mosque. Your men of noble birth in particular. Until the seneschal you had sent for arrived Sir Etienne had taken over running the household, sending your vagabond nuns to work as maidservants, and his own squire fetching and carrying for you when Hugo was too busy. The man sat with spurs on the table, eating a plum.

"Lions have been seen prowling around Master Kylios' farm," Etienne added, "Something should be done."

If we do, we should have Hugo and Franz swap out their horses for proper coursers
>>
"Take who you need," you said to both Tancred and Solomon, "I'll head out with Sir Etuenne tomorrow to deal with the lions."

They all nod, raising a small toast. Solomon takes the Syrian lancers with him, as well as the Queen's troops. Tancred only needs his own men to get the job done.

When you find Etienne the next day he is waiting with horse and spear, armoured with his squires in attendance. Jacques gives you a small bow. He had readied your horse as well, and shot Hugo a smug look as he walked out horses for himself and Franz.

"Bring us back a pelt!" Maggie called from a window down to Hugo, Etain hanging out the other side, waving like noble ladies.

"A pelt each, little lion," Etain added.

Franz scratched at his balding pate. "Women, you'd think safe return was reward enough," and he spat before mounting his horse. You take up a horse bow and flex it. You'd never been much of an archer before, but figure it couldn't hurt. This wasn't sport, this was removing a dangerous pest. You secured your lion helm and mounted, bow slung across the horn of your saddle.

"Lead the way Sir Etienne," you said, and he bowed before mounting his own steed.

It was a party of five that rode out toward the farmlands. Both squires had spears and armour to match their knights. Jacques was proving himself a useful young man, a ready fill-in for your own squire. Might be you had need of another squire again, lest Hugo get overburdened with responsibilities.

You spy a pair of farmers waiting. Dark burned men with worried frowns.

"It has taken a child," one said in broken Greek, "We do not know if she still lives. We doubt it."

That was bad.

You flex the bow, but set it aside for your spear. If the child yet lived now was not the time to try new things. You ready your spear, firm in a couched position.

"No," Etienne said, "We go on foot, lest the horses drive this beast away." He dismounted as example and you followed his lead. The farmers directed you out onto the plain. There was a copse of trees. Etienne pointed with his spear.

"That would be where they are," he said, "Sleeping out the rest of the day. Lazy creatures, lions."

He crept forward through the yellowing grass, barely raising a crunch. You did the same, though not quite expert. Franz had his hunting bow in hand. Hugo and Jacques took up the rear. Sweat was running down your face from the heat. It was no pleasant task stalking beasts in armour under the hot holy sun. You draw a mailled finger across your upper lip, and Hugo holds up a skin, squirts water into your mouth.

The copse is a little pool of darkness next to the yellow grass and how beating sun, a shroud of black on the land.

No one spoke as you came into that shadow, your eyes adjusting sharply.

But then you hear a whimper, and see a bundle move among red splattered bones.

Etienne started forward when a low alien growl ripped out.

"Above!" Jacques yelled, casting his spear.

It was -not- a lion. And Jacques spear missed its mark as it came down from the branches like quicksilver.

"Holy-" was what Etienne managed before it startled up on him, claws scything out. Hugo batted him back, gored the spotted cat on his spear tip, saving him a painful death.

"Get the girl," You ordered, and Jacques darted forward.

You thrust your spear but the spotted cat knocked it aside and came at you. You drew your sword, the sharp Damascus blade, and swing up. It gives a great wide-eyed yowl as you cut through hard sinew like it was paper.

Etienne and Hugo come in with their spears, impaling it, pinning it. The creature gave a pitful last yowl as you thrust your blade through its back and into its heart.

"A leopard," Etienne panted, pulling his spear out, "I thought they were gone from these lands."

"They are now," Hugo said, shouldering his spear and marching over to the girl.

Her face was ruined, she was very weak.

You knew there wasn't much you could, but Hugo's pleading was enough to have you at least try. You pull her up into your arms and run for the village and your waiting horses. The farmers are agog at the sight of the maimed girl in your arms, her blood smearing your chest and shoulder as you pull up into the saddle.

You set spurs to flanks, and power your horse through the fields to your tower, ignoring its painful cries. It breathes hard against the bit, and when you charge down the town street and into your courtyard it flounders and begins to fall. Poor horse collapsed, blowing white foam at the mouth.

The vagabond nuns are with you as you push into the tower. They help you take the girl up into a guest chamber.

"Saints have mercy," Etain said, making the cross as you lay the girl on the bed. The child whimpered, still awake with her face half eviscerated.

"Settle down, settle," Maggie said, directing her friend to fetch wine, "We'll give it a boil. I don't see any pus, so no need to burn her, but hot wine might help."

"You've some training?" you asked.

Maggie winced. "O-only a little," she said as Etain returned.

They set to work, cutting off bandages and using the wine to clean out the wines. The girl gave bubbled cries, still roused. "If we had some poppy..." you remarked, recalling a passage in the book you had purchased. You could make of poppy a soothing balm.

"You best leave m'lord," Etain said, directing you away, "We'll care for her."

You were shown the door, the former novices getting to the work.

Chihirizahd found you waiting out the door.

"Come master," she said, "Let's get you out of those bloody things. Your men return."

"So who was the child?" Chihirizahd asked when she saw you would not budge, leaning against the frame of the door. You shrugged. Some farmer's daughter. You lay a knuckled hand against the surface of the door, flexed against it. "You are a good man," Chihirizahd ran a hand across your cheek, "But a lord cannot concern himself with every child in his domain."

Is it not a lord's duty to care for his tenants? But she was not wrong, you could do nothing standing out here. Still, you could not bring yourself to move either. It is as if God was saying something. That should you maintain your vigil the girl will be well.

You sink to a knee, make the cross and pray. Chihirizahd sits beside you, watching you.

It is many hours later when Maggie emerges. "You waited?" she pulled back her red locks, made a quick knot, "Aye, you would. Same as your brother."

It was about that time they came to find you.

Solomon and Tanced both seemed tired but whole, while Franz presented you with the leopard pelt.

"I lost a man," Solomon said, "A boy, really. But we drove off the Egyptians."

"The bandits are scattered for now but not caught," Tancred said, "And we lost no one. Cowardly bunch."

It all seemed in order.

It is near dawn when Etain tells you the girl has been taken into the arms of the Lord.

You felt your heart sink. Poor child. The girls were seeing her cared for, and her parents would be sent for as soon as dawn broke. You stagger up to your chamber, the highest in the tower. Chihirizahd helps you out of your filthy clothing, draws for you a bath.

"You did all that you could," she said, massaging your shoulders as you sank into the heat. She kissed the back of your neck. "Your people will remember you for it."

"Mayhap," you say, eyes heavy. You enjoy her ministrations, and have her lead you to the bed.

The next few days are set dealing with the petty problems of the common folk. A family cannot agree on who owns a recently born batch of piglets, and ask for your judgement. One side owned the pig it was born from, the other claim the piglet was born on their land and was sired by their pig, and thus theirs by right.

They each give birth to half a baby. I think one of them later sticks both halves together, and it resurrects?
Mythology/Religion is weird.
>>
"Split them between you," you say. It seemed a common sense option.

Both groups scowled at the other. Of course they could not question your judgement on this.

"And what about the odd one?" a boy held up the last piglet. It was a cute little thing, snuffling in the boy's hands.

A man from the other group snatched it up, and it gave a honking, terrified squeal as he dashed its head apart on the courtyard stone. The boy backed up in terror, but his fellows nodded in agreement.

"For your dinner sir," the man said, motioning to the dead little pink and black piglet.

And they took the last pigs as one of your servants swept up the corpse for butchering, leaving you cold.

The month has passed and your men have spotted riders coming. The expected new hires.

You decide it best to meet them humble. Three men come, with other travelers as well. An old Arab, who needs the help of a young man to get off his horse, a bearded Frank and a woman of light brown hair in his company.

"I am Ibrahim," the old man said, and knocked the young man's ankle with his staff, "This is Mohmed, my nephew. We heard you had need of a physician."

"You are Muslims?" you asked, and they nodded. Ibrahim had a frown for the girls in your hall, but said nothing.

"I worked in Gaza for most my life, tending to children when there was not a war," Ibrahim said, "And training my nephew to one day take up my trade. We will serve you well."

"Then I'm happy to have you in my service," you said, taking his wrinkled old hand. He frowned, bowing over the offered hand. His nephew set out a pair of mats, and they took up a corner of your tower to pray. Muslims.

The bearded Frank, who was called Frank, stepped up. "Don't waste time on those heathens," he said, producing his trade goods. A razor, a bleeding bowl. "I'm all the physician you need. I have a good rate, of ten clients I get five through, by god's grace. And I've a hand for the women. A sound beating too keep their humours in order, everyday!" He showed a calloused fist and smiled.

Your other guest waited, tapping her foot with a frustrated smile on her face.

"I'm fairly certain Ibrahim is the man I want," you said, keeping a smile. Frank blinked, but nodded.

"Well if that's your truck, I can't be fightin' with it," he touched his forelock, "Sorry fer wasting your time m'lord, very sorry." He stepped back, a frown and fists on his hips. "Now I've to find my way 'back' to Acre, God's grace." And he took his mule by the rope and led him out the courtyard.

"I am Rosalie," the woman offered a hand, "You seem to keep well with womenfolk." She was not so disapproving as she saw girls skirt by, a very pleasant smile for Sabeen as she passed.

"And your business?" you asked.

She rubbed her chin. "You had need for a seneschal did you not?" she said, "I've kept the chambers of many a rich burgher and urban dweller. In Sidon and Jerusalem itself. You can call on my former employers if you've a need to ask. Managing an estate might be some challenge, but its one I'm up to. Don't count my femininity for lack of ability."

"Happy to have you," she took your offered hand. She smiled, a very pleasant smile, and dipped a curtsy.

"Happy to serve you," she said, "However you might like." And she skirted away toward her horse, a finger raised and sharp words for the porters. She had them in a state like Solomon on the training ground. You watched her nearly kick one boy who almost dropped a leather bag.

"Show them to their quarters," you instructed Maggie, who nodded as you directed her to Ibrahim. Etain you gave to Rosalie. "Help her get accommodated," you said, "You'll be her dogsbody for now."

"Yes m'lord," Etain said it with a bored sigh, helping Rosalie with a bag.

"Charming girl," Rosalie remarked as they passed you.

All that was in order. Your court now only lacked for a troubadour. You supposed you could fill that roll yourself, in a pinch.

You receive two letters a week later. A saint's day is coming up. Lord Gerard has invited you to visit Sidon, while Pons has asked if you'd care to visit Tripoli. You gather your household and deliver the news. Sabeen seemed excited to be back on the road, nodding with approval, while Etain cast Maggie jealous glances. Sir Etienne instructs his squire to prepare their things for travel.

"Be safe on the road, brother," Solomon said.

"We'll guard the keep," Tancred added.

Franz just gave you a nod, settling against the wall. He seemed oddly thoughtful. Perhaps his old age was catching up with him.

Ibrahim released his nephew into your care with an exchange in Arabic, kissing the young man on the cheek and rubbing his brow. You didn't understand their chatter, but recognised the love the old man had, and even more the uncomfortable glances Mohmed gave you while dealing with that love.

You take with you only a small compliment of foot soldiers, the ones loaned to you by the Queen. Ten men in all, leaving enough behind to keep Ramla secure.

Aymal escorted you part of the way on the road, waving you off as you left the rolling fields of your lordship.

"God walk with you, Frank!" he called, holding aloft his spear.

You return the salute, spear held up.

"I have never been to Sidon," Mohmed said to Sabeen, "Many Frank lands are new to me."

"It is not so bad," she replied, "I killed a man there once." You saw Mohmed pale at her words.

The road to Jaffa is in not long. Hugo and Jacques race each other up the road while Etienne oversees the soldiers. As you travel you pass a patrol of Templars escorting pilgrims to Jerusalem. They bid you a good greeting but do not tarry.

You ride with Sir Etienne. The French knight was a fussy man, very concerned with his appearance. Every morning you saw him tend to his facial hair, carefully grooming and waxing the moustach while scrapping his chin bare. You were also clean shaven, but just did a ready quick shave every morning, not fussing over every exact hair.

"M'Lord," he kept good manners, and looked over the field with a poised nature.

"Etienne," you look out to the road as well. He was watching his squire race yours.

"The vigour of youth," he said with an uncomfortable smile.

Hugo was beating the other lad soundly, and when they pelted up back to you, they drew up, Hugo crowing his victory.

Jacques spat something in French, and Etienne said something back which made the boy crestfallen.

"Sorry, Hugo," Jacques, "You were the better rider."

Etienne nodded. "It is not just arms, but manners they are to be instructed in," Etienne said, sending his squire off with a slap on the rump. Jacques rode off high in the saddle to the back of the line, red in the face.

"So tell me sir," Etienne turned to you, "What brought you to the holy land?"

He shrugged. "I tired of killing my fellow Christians, and sought forgiveness for my sins. Not a complicated tale," he said, "What about you m'lord?"

Falling asleep, so just wanted to ask this question for Q&A when the session ends:

How effective is the canon of medicine at preventing infections when we take wounds? Does it also work for our household?
>>
>>35788442
Maggie and Etain can't read.
>>
>Rosalie Drake (23), your seneschal (member-of-staff)

>Middle English "Drake", Old Norse "Draki". The derivation for all these forms is from the Latin "draco", snake, or monster. As a nickname, it would presumably apply to someone formidable and fierce in battle, but it could also be a metonymic "occupational" surname for a standard-bearer, as in "Draker" (1260, Cambridgeshire). "Draca" was used in medieval England to mean a battle-standard as well as a dragon.

Rosalie confirmed for Dragon to Wilhelm's Lion
>>
>>35788450
No, like if Hugo takes a bad wound, and we are there with our handy book. Can we prevent Hugo's wounds from getting infected by using the canon of medicine? Or are its benefits limited to just us personally?

"I had few prospects back home," you said, "Just a life of courts and tourneys, maybe the odd war. I thought, if there is a future for a young knight with keen wits, Jerusalem is the place." You shrugged. "And if my soul might be saved in the process, all the better."

"Hmph," Etienne doesn't seem overly impressed by your claims, "This land is infested with such men, tearing each other down. That is the flaw of this great dream called Jerusalem, that we might squabble and bicker among ourselves over earthly bones, when all the banquets of heaven lie before us." He gave the horizon a considered look. "It is not the Saracen that will be our undoing, it will be our own weakness of character."

"You say it as if its foretold," you said, "That the Saracen should capture the Holy Land. Jesus is on our side, we have the true cross. I think you worry too much."

He shrugged. "I do not know what the future holds," he conceded, "But I have fought the Turk. We will struggle to match them, when the time comes."

Maybe so.

"How did you turn up in the Queen's employ?" you asked.

He grinned. "I lost a bet and was forced into it. Though I must say, it has been a pleasant service so far."

When you retire for the night, and keep Chihirizahd company, you reflect a little on his words. Many thought the Turk a looming threat, and Etienne thought them a doom itself. You had not put much mind to the Turk, your thoughts on Egypt.
>>
>>35788506
Well, we'll just order a crusade/jihad against the Vatican if that happens.
>>
Mayhap you would need to study them some more in the future.

You arrived at Jaffa with Hugh's greeting at the gates. He took you by the shoulder and showed you a small icon.

"My betrothed," he said, "Carmella of Sicily."

It was not of great detail, just a vague feminine outline, but showed a slim body. Hugh was clearly excited of the prospect.

He lent you rooms for the night, knowing your business was in Sidon. Letters he bid you give to Lord Gerard while you were there, and could not rightly refuse, as he prepared a ship for escort. He was a good friend, Count Hugh, had accomodated you at every turn. And still you thought, his friendship was not worth Ascelon, or Ioveta.

Questions here: >>35788442 and >>35788470

Also, tell us about more about our new hires? How good are they? Especially curious about Rosalie since we got her with a 65.

What would have happened with a crit in the lion hunt?

Ibrahim is very good but old. Mohmed has to do some levelling up, but he's decent. Rosalie is competent but unaccomplished. How she does might come down to you in the end.

>>
>>35789461
We are gonna need Engineers for siege weapons, besides we also need to repair our city wall and a Greek Mercenary Captain would be an excellent trainer for our troops
>>
>>35789472

wont that be under solomon?

considering that hes mostly training the 15 fresh green troops that were added to our strength (since the queen's own and tancred's men should be well trained), i dont think we need an additional trainer.
>>
>>35789461
We need as many good troops as we can get. Good mercs can be found in Constantinople. We need to build siege engines for the siege and we need to repair Ramla, Greeks are good engineers.
>>
>>35789511
Well the Greek Captain would be an experienced drill instructor and it would open Solomon up for doing other things.
