>Probably a one-shot, possibly more. Inspired by peer pressure from QTG. I make no excuses if this becomes complete nonsensical bullshit almost immediately.

"What did you do when they came? You remember, right?" Your little brother was only a couple years old at the time of the event, and he's finally getting old enough to start to understand what all this means. His questions about it have been getting more and more direct over the past months. Well, at least he can hear it from you, rather than someone else.

"Everyone does." You reply, automatically. Kind of a cliche answer, but you can't think of anything better. Really, you'd rather not be having this conversation at all. But you guess you can't shelter him forever.

"You're avoiding the question." Smart little fucker, isn't he?

"Fine. I..."

"I..." You hesitate. Memories come flooding back. Fire. Screams. A searing pain in the back of your mind. Your heart thumps in your chest, just like it did that day. Just like...

***

This can't be happening. This isn't fucking real, you refuse to believe it. Demons, zombies, whatever the fuck these things are, they don't ACTUALLY swarm and attack people on Halloween. That's stupid. That's insane. That's... exactly what's fucking happening, isn't it?

You curse under your breath, loudly, and try to keep your head down. Everything's gone to shit. At 7:06 AM (6:66, you realize, just making all of this even more unbelieveable), there was some kind of power surge, and almost exactly half of the population just... went crazy.

You were on your way to school when it happened, taking a back road to avoid everyone else like you usually do. That probably saved your life, because by the time you arrived at school, it was chaos. You're pretty sure you saw your homeroom teacher eating some girl's guts.

Like hell were you going to just stand there. You...

You NOPEd right the fuck out of there. Clearly, this was an insane nightmare. Or if it wasn't, at least you'd probably get the day off from school.

It's been several hours since you got home, locked all the doors and windows, and spent the day glued to every form of news media you could get your hands on. That's how you know what's happening, and it still doesn't seem possible. At all. It's just another War of the Worlds prank like on the radio way back when, right?

But your parents were supposed to be home hours ago. Mom usually drops your brother off early at daycare, so she can pick him up on her way home. But she was supposed to be home two hours ago. And by the time you finally worked up the guts to try calling, your service was out. The power followed not too long ago.

Fuck. You're going to have to go out and rescue him, aren't you?

Okay, fuck it. If this is a dream, you might as well make it an exciting one. And if it's real... Well, alright, then you'll roll with it.

The only suitable weapon you can find is an aluminum baseball bat from God only knows how long ago. That weird off-brand Walmart one that everyone seems to have, sell at a yard sale, and then have again by the time you have the next one. That, and a black hooded sweatshirt will be all you need. Hopefully.

It's not far to the daycare, just a few blocks. And you know the side streets, so it's easy enough to get there quickly, avoiding anyone or anything that might see you. It's chaos, though. Blood splattered everywhere, flipped cars burning in the streets, smashed windows and doors, and the occasional gunshot or scream. No bodies, but that could mean any number of things.

Finally, you cross the last hill until you can see the daycare. It's almost dark, but you can just make out the building, and a mob of people outside of it. You crouch low, and sneak closer, trying to get a good look.

The crowd is humanoid, but... you can't think anything but 'zombies' when you see them. Moving clumsily, many of them covered in gore or missing entire body parts. They're swarming the daycare, pounding on doors and windows. None of them seem to have gotten in yet, but it can't be anything but a matter of time, with how many there are.

>Continued.
>>
> https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8CqE1ydsQNg

But in the crowd, you see one that stands apart. If you're giving up on trying to deny all this is happening, you might as well call this one a demon. Standing at least two heads taller than the mob, with twisted horns and more teeth than is probably strictly necessary, it's clearly commanding the mob, shouting in a language that sounds like someone talking through a blender.

"[Give us the child!]" With everything else that's happening, you don't even question why you can understand it. "[Give us the child and I will make your deaths quick and painless!]" There are screams from inside, as the sound of shattering glass fills the air. One of the windows has broken open, and the zombies are crawling over each other to get in through it. "[...too late.]"

There's a lot of information to take in here. It's Halloween and there is a demon leading an army of zombies. They're after a child in the daycare, maybe even your baby brother. You can understand what the demon is saying. The zombies are in countless numbers, that demon is fucking huge, there's no way you can take them all in a straight fight. Maybe you should just find another way to help, or...

No, you know what? Fuck it. You're not letting these assholes kill or abduct your baby brother.

Tightening your grip on the bat, you spring from your hiding place, and charge through the crowd towards the demon, bat held over your head. You don't know quite what you're yelling, but clearly it's got their attention, and the demon turns just in time to see the bat swinging downwards towards its face. Its solid-red eyes go wide for a moment, and...

Hey, QM? Try to avoid asking something like this. It's prime bait for trolls and shitposters to proxy vote a different prompt than what was originally voted for. Most QMs draw a line in the sand, such as a time limit for votes, or "first choice to get five votes". Or if there is no clear consensus, many will use a dice roll to sort out a tie.

You don't have to do any of this. I'm just saying this because I've seen some shit.

...your blow collides with the demon's forehead, ringing like a bell, and denting the hell out of the bat. If he was human, you definitely would have done some serious damage. But was it enough for a monster? There's a moment of silence, where you aren't sure what might happen. Did you get him?

"[Brave fool.]" Nnnnnope. The demon swats you away with one arm, sending you and the bat spiraling through the air. You're unconscious before you hit the ground.

You awaken in a remarkably plush chair, sitting across from a man with wide, blood-shot eyes, a hooked nose, and a somewhat disquieting grin.

"Well, hello, there. My name is Igor. Welcome to the Velvet Room." You open your mouth to speak, but he holds up a hand to stop you. "I'm sure you must have many questions, and normally, I'd be very happy to answer them. There are all sorts of formalities I normally like to observe. But right now, time is of the essence, so I must be brief."

You nod, and listen. Not the weirdest thing to happen to you today, at least.

"You are at a crossroads. I can't say where your choices may lead, just that they are yours to make. You have very unique powers, and I can unlock them for you. But first, you must agree to a contract with me." He pushes a piece of paper across the table between you. "The terms are very simple. You will agree to abide by the consequences of your own actions, and your own choices."

Like hell is it ever actually that simple, right?

"Or, you can decline. You will most likely die, of course, but it's always an option."

>ONE MORE GOD REJECTED

You rise from where you fell outside the daycare. There's a pounding pain in your head, and you think you can feel blood running from your ears. Vision still blurry, you take in your surroundings. It can't have been more than a few moments since you fell, and the demon, about twenty feet away, turns towards you.

"[Still alive?]" It's hard to read the demon's expression as it turns back towards you. Or maybe you just don't care.

"Per..." The sounds come automatically, a word you need to say. You don't even think to question it. "So... Na."

For the second time, everything goes red. But this time, when it comes back, it's more. You see things you couldn't before. The strings of mental control between the demon and its minions. They're feral without the control of a host, and the more powerful the host, the smarter and more coordinated they become. This one knows what it's doing, but it's running on raw talent, without much experience. You don't know how you know it, but you do, as fundamentally as you understand its language, and the dawning fear in its eyes.

"[You should know something, before you die.]" The demon's expression changes again. Fear mixes with rage. Recognition. Good. You crack your knuckles and your neck, and grin. This is going to be fun. "[I'm stronger than you.]"

The demon charges towards you, and swings a massive fist your way, towards the center of your chest. It collides with a heavy thud, and you feel yourself pushed back a few inches, but that's all. You return the favor, and send it back a few FEET. The swarm of zombies behind it cushion it from the blow, and push it back upright. They're all focused on you now, and the demon takes a few steps back, letting the mob close in.

"[I don't need to kill you to win, traitor. I just need to get to The Child before you do.]" It's right. You can kill all of them, sure enough. But that mass of bodies will keep you from getting anywhere, while the horned jackass is free to go through the window they opened. "[THEN I'll kill you.]"

There's really only one thing you can do from up here.

"RIDER!" Your voice echoes as you begin to descent, one leg straight, heel extended. Faster and faster you descend, towards the demon beneath you. "KIIIIIIIICK!"

To your credit, your blow connects in the dead center of its chest, and you feel something CRUNCH at the impact. Somewhat less fortunately, you're pretty sure that crunch was something in your leg breaking.

"[H-ha...]" Psychic strings unravel and snap as you are dragged down with the falling demon. Blood seeping from the corners of its mouth, it spreads a grim smile, and digs its claws into your leg, still half-embedded in its chest.

A low growl, first one, then dozens, hundreds, join together, as one by one, the zombies return to their feral nature, and turn their gaze to you. "[Now... We will die together.]"

I like your style of writing but try to work on going a bit faster. Your posts are coherent and flow well, but For them being relatively short you should crank them out a bit faster, that or include a bit more content to each post.
>>
>>35824813
Also, I like the idea of using the Persona universe for this. A lot. With that said, a good way to make your writing faster is to plan a bit ahead on what you are going to write. Don't worry about the fine details just things like If we fail a roll, how bad will it be? If crit fail how bad will it be? Crit success? The actual content will flow easier if you have an idea of where you want it to do.

Well, this is less than ideal. You were really hoping your first Rider Kick would be more... dramatic than that. It's pretty obvious you've got some kind of superpowers at this point, right?

You take a moment to reassess the situation. It's Halloween, zombies and demons are killing people, you got superpowers by having a dream/vision/halucination about getting shot in the head by a bald guy with a long nose, and your two-year-old kid brother is almost certainly inside the barricaded daycare.

Oh, right, and the zombies are closing in and intend to tear you limb from limb. You jerk back, trying to get free, but the demon's grip on your leg doesn't loosen. Its many teeth are bared, jaw clenched in determination. Getting out while it's still fighting you isn't going to be easy.

Fuck this shit. This asshole could have died like a cool villain, and exploded when you kicked him from thirty feet in the air, but no, it had to survive and try to bring you down with it. Jackass, ruining your debut.

Balling your hands into fists, you pound punches against the demon's head and skull, one after another. God damn, its head is hard, too. Bu the time the demon finally stops thrashing, its face is a caved in mess of splintered bone and black blood, and you're splattered in it as well.

The demon's death means you can easily pull out your leg with a wet SCHLORP and get back to your feet. Well, that's one problem out of the way. The now-feral mob of flesh-eating undead that are growling and snarling and closing in one by one? Still gotta take care of that part.

It's a little bent up, but you grab your fallen bat all the same. It doesn't take long, but the horde is already closing in by the time you do. Fighting through this mob is possible, they might not even be able to injure you. But it'll take a long time, and right now, you've got a baby brother to save.

Again, you tense the muscles in your legs, and crouch low. You're better prepared this time, you know what to expect, and when you leap, you sail in a glorious arc over the mob. The whole town is sprawled out below you this time. You must be at least sixty, seventy feet up.

It's chaos as far as you can see. Fires burning in the distance, other swarms like this one. Other demons, too. You don't get much chance to take in details before you start to descend again, but at least now you know for sure this isn't an isolated incident.

The landing is much cleaner this time, and you come down with both feet on a zombie at the far end of the mob, a couple dozen feet from the daycare. This is probably a good thing, as not only does the zombie pop like a water balloon full of spaghetti sauce, the impact sends a rippling shockwave through the ground, and a foot-deep crater beneath you where you landed.

Behind you, the horde is slowly turning to face you again, and in front of you, the daycare stands mostly-solid, save for the one broken window that hasn't been rebarricaded.

Your little brother is probably inside that building. As tempting as it is to re-enact a scene from The Raid 2.

"[I'm not going to hurt you!]" There isn't really enough time to wait for a confirmation before you climb in through the window. The broken glass would probably cut normal flesh up pretty good, but it just crunches and breaks under you without leaving a scratch. Once you're inside (fuck, it's dark in here), you scan the room for something to rebarricade the window with.

There's nothing really heavy enough to stay for long, but you push a bookcase up against it, and then get another one leaned up against that. One might be able to crawl over the top, or knock the whole thing over, but it'd make a hell of a lot of noise when it did, and that'd at least give you some time to react.

Your eyes already seem fully adjusted to the darkness, maybe another new superpower, and you get a better look around. There, on the far side of the large main room of the daycare, are two older women holding a mass of young children against you protectively. Some are crying, others are hiding their faces. But through all of the children, and the adults, one thing holds constant.

They are all completely terrified of you.

>And now I have to pause to go make and eat dinner because I am a human who needs food to survive.
>I should hopefully be back by 7. 8 at the very, very latest.

>>35839258
Story time soon?
>>
"[Hey, hey, it's okay!]" You put your hands up, trying to calm them down. A high-pitched shriek as you do shows just how effective that particular strategy is going to be. It sets off a chain reaction, and soon, the entire huddled mass is screaming and blubbering and you think you hear one of the women whispering the Lord's Prayer under her breath.

Well, if the undead weren't trying to get in before, they certainly are now. The doors and windows shake as they're again put under the assault of the feral mob. Their groans, a feeding call if you know anything at all about zombie movies, is clear and obvious even through the walls. This doesn't exactly make the situation better for the group's clarity of thought.

Things continue as they are, they're just going to keep screaming and cowering until they're all eaten alive. You're going to have to do something. Now.

Well, alright. Clearly, you're stuck in Demon Talk mode, and that's not doing much to calm them down. But it's a daycare, there's got to be crayons or something around, right?

It doesn't take you too long to find one, though the first one you grab being bright red probably isn't doing much for your 'I'm not evil, I promise" plan. Still, it's better than nothing. Clumsily gripping the nubby red wax, you tear out the blank back page of a relatively-new-looking coloring book and write as fast and clearly as the situation allows.

'I am a friend. I won't hurt you.'

With the pounding and groaning seeming to get louder every moment, you push the paper across the floor, and look expectantly at the women. Whether it's the words or just the act of writing the message that does it, you aren't sure, but they both seem to be looking at you differently. Like they're not quite sure they believe you.

For what feels like minutes, two women stay frozen in place, hugging the children close to them. This hasn't been the best day of their lives. Fine, you understand that. But if they don't do something soon-

The door comes busting open, breaking right off the hinges. You move on instinct, planting your shoulder against the cracking wood and shove with all your might. Even against the crush of bodies, you're stronger than they are, and you push them back out, bracing yourself to keep them out.

THAT gets everyone moving, and they've gathered the children together, ready to move, in a remarkably quick period of time.

"Fine!" One of them shouts, as much to convince herself as you, from the sound of it, "We'll go with you! Not like we have much of a choice."

Well, about damn time. The only question now, with the entire building surrounded and the front door held together almost solely by you forcing it to, what are you going to do with them?

Yeah, like hell are you going anywhere with that mob outside. As quickly as you can, you usher them to one of the far corners, away from all the doors and windows. Then you take a deep breath, shift the grip on your bat, and let go of the door.

The flood is immediate, as the undead have worked themselves into a frenzy. Even with the bottleneck, they're swarming in as fast as you can take them down. It doesn't take you long to realize that destroying the brain really is the only way to keep them down for good, and by the time your bat finally crumples and caves, you've already gotten a very good sense of just where to plant a blow to crush the skull.

Corpses collapse and fall over one another, creating a wall of rotting flesh that the future attackers have to climb over to get to you. Dozens have fallen around you, but there doesn't seem to be any end to their numbers. It's almost enough to make you give up, to change tactics and try something else, but each time you consider it, all it takes is a glance over your shoulder to remind you why you're doing this.

It's almost three hours later by the time you finally pulp the last undead. Their bodies are scattered and stacked everywhere, through all the windows they broke down, several layers thick on the ground, and a complete wasteland outside, where you took the battle once there was literally no more room to fight effectively inside the daycare.

They couldn't best you, but those individual scratches and dings have been adding up, plus an exhaustion like you've never felt before. You won! You just... need to lie down for a minute.

The last thing you see before you lose consciousness is a flash of recognition on the women's faces.

"You what?" Your brother looks at you impatiently. You've been lost in your memories for so long, you forgot that you were supposed to be telling him a story.

"I... I'll tell you later." You stand and leave before he can say anything else to stop you. Thinking about it, you'd really rather not tell your five-year old brother about the time you turned into a demon and killed three hundred zombies with a bat and your bare hands. He'll understand when he's older. Hopefully.

Two years have passed since then, almost to the day. Halloween is coming up again soon, and although last year's was eerily quiet, you're not sure how much you can rely on that. You've learned a lot about yourself and your powers since then, talked to Igor a few more times in your dreams, even made decent progress on protecting the group of survivors who've started to look to you, if not as a leader, at least as a shield.

Your track record hasn't been perfect, though. People have still died. A lot of them. And though no one would ever dare blame you to your face (for a lot of reasons), you can still see it in a few of their faces. They were expecting a savior and a hero. But powers or not, you're still just one person.

Things have started to look up recently, though. About six months ago, you finally got a chance to move everyone to a secure location where you can all start to settle in and rebuild. In the end, you chose...

The mall was your idea. To this day, you still occasionally find someone's kid innocently playing with the 'weird lightsabers', but it's worked out fairly well. Food has been the biggest issue- as the population grew, so did their needs. And as it turns out, not a lot of people grew up learning how to grow staple food crops. But you're making due.

You intentionally avoid the food court, which has become the sort of de facto common area, and duck through fallen rubble to one of the cleared-out stores that has kind of become your own personal sanctuary: Justice.

Male, though you should've either rolled for it or just determined gender beforehand.

oh god is this going to turn into a management quest? I'm so out if it is.
Also, like the character.
Also, sad I didn't get here in time to vote for "school" because the local middle school has long been where I plan to go in the event of zombies (it was built to double as a bomb shelter)
>>
>>35843405
I think it was just a general stat-up of what we should expect there.
>>
>>35843405
>Yeah, it's not going to turn into a management quest. I'm a filthy storygamer at heart, so it's just an expectation of what kinds of plots and issues to expect coming up.

There's no forgetting some of the things you've seen. But you've done your best to not let it affect your day-to-day life. A couple years ago, you might've even noticed that you've lost some weight and put on a bit of muscle over the months. Now you just notice the dark circles under your eyes and hope your breath won't stink too much like liquor when you go back out to facing the world again.

****

A drink, a nap, and a vain attempt to pretend the previous two didn't happen later, and you're back out in public again. No one really bothers to stop you or make conversation, and you're able to eat your rice-and-potatoes in peace. Or you're mostly able to, until someone sits across from you at your table in the corner.

"I'm not going to ask where you were for the last few hours." There's a tone of matronly disapproval in the woman's voice, the same tone that got all those children, including your brother, to stay calm and quiet on that night two years ago.

>Continued.

"Then I don't have to lie about it, right?" You smile, at least somewaht genuinely. She at least deserves that much for all the help she's given. Lord knows you'd never have been able to take care of a dozen two-year-olds. Her older sister and her opened a daycare to pass the time while their husbands were at work when they were younger. Three decades, two divorces, and a tragic loss you don't like to think about later, Edith Orton is one of the emotional leaders of the community, everyone's stuffy-but-wise aunt. Sometimes she even reminds you of your mother.

"Have you thought about what we're going to do about the food situation?" Straight to the point. At least she doesn't patronize you with small talk first. "There isn't much more left to be scavenged, and winter's coming soon."

"I know."

"If we're going to go out to find some way to grow things on the scale we need, you're going to have to lead the way."

"I know."

"Now, I don't pretend to understand why the Lord gave you these... powers, but-"

"What do you WANT, Edith?" Things go quiet, and as your adrenaline comes back down, you realize everyone is staring at you. You pull up your hood and try to look a bit smaller. "I know all this. You know I do. So what do you want me to do?"

"I want you to lead a group to the military base."

>[ ] "You what? You said yourself that place is a death trap."
>[ ] "Why me? I'm a beatstick, not a leader."
>[ ] "Okay. Who'll be coming with me?"
>[ ] Write-in.

"You mean you want me to go in first, clear out the death trap, then guard the group who's going to scavenge it afterwards, don't you?"
