Her name is Clara Hunter; she's the daughter of Maxine Hunter, the current CEO of Chalcedon Incorporated. The current time is 8:34 AM, the current date is October 12, 2034. You kidnapped her yesterday when school let out, and she's unharmed at present.

She is seventeen years old, but her mother's email history didn't mention her a single time before enrolling her in elementary school in 2022. When she was a very young child, she was raised in a very controlled environment by a number of caretakers, with little to no interaction with her mother; she moved into her parent's house at six.

And she's decided she's in love with you. Crazily, wildly in love with you. This despite the fact that you met her less than 24 hours ago.

She's shared so much about herself (knowingly or unknowingly), and it doesn't really matter anyway, so you decided to share something about yourself in return. You told her a story about yourself, back when you were in the Army, before you got drawn into the special forces, before you retired to work for Chalcedon, before you got fired and almost killed by her mother.

Her response was to start positively gushing, singing your praises. Telling you how great you are. She's a lovesick teenager, though, so you're not exactly inclined to listen to her.

Much.

It is good for the ego, though.

The first few weeks after she moved in with her "mother". What they talked about, what her room was like, her chores: things that would stick out to a six year old but might tell us a little more about what she is and why the Hunters took her in.
>>

Does she remember any of her caretakers names, or the names of the children she grew up with? Ask about her life after she moved in with her parents. Did she still have caretakers around her?

I think we should wait until we've got some more stuff to go on before we mention how suspicious her upbringing is.

I'd also be game to confront Mrs Hunter about it first. See if we can wring any info out of her first, and maybe trick her into telling Clara herself.

"I mean it!" She continues, loudly. "You really are just incredible, darling." She flutters her eyelashes. "Any girl would be lucky to have you. Oh, darling, you don't know how many times I've fantasized about our first kiss-"

"Probably far too many," you interrupt. "Please, stop, you're making me blush," you continue, in an absolute deadpan.

"If that's what you want, sweetie. I understand that war can be difficult to talk about."

"It's not the war that's the problem-" you shake your head. "Look, I wanted to ask you a bit more about your childhood."

"I'm glad you're so interested in me, sweetheart. I'll tell you whatever you want to know."

You decide to just let that one slide. "Do you remember anything in particular about your caretakers, or the other children?"

"Mmm... not really. Sorry, angel. There was a boy named Ezekiel, but I can barely remember his face now, much less what he was really like. I was so little..."

"What was it like, moving in with your parents for the first time? It seems like a pretty unusual experience."

"They really doted on me for the first few weeks. I got to eat candy all the time, they were really sweet, and I remember being happy and also being very, very spoiled. I think they were glad to have me in the house, really. Then... well, they got used to me, and they stopped spoiling me quite so much."

You open your computer and start skimming through the emails around when Clara moved in with her mother and father. A little bit after the elementary school enrollment email, there's one from her father to her mother: "REMINDER: Clara moving in next Saturday!" Once she moves in, there's several emails of Maxine Hunter sending cute pictures of little Clara - you can't help but saw "aww" when you see them - to various friends. Some of the reply emails are to the effect of "I didn't know you had a daughter;" others are to the effect of "finally, we get to see your kid."

In the photos, little Clara is cute and precocious and climbs all over everything and stuffs her mouth with candy until her fingers and lips are coated brown with chocolate. All that kind of stuff. There's a few home videos you let play, muted, in the background, where little Clara dances and tugs at her mother's dress to whine for more candy and sings and plays with some big old dog.

Clara looks at you from over on the couch, curious. "What's got you so fascinated?"

"Pictures of you as a little girl," you reply, before turning your attention back to the computer screen. There's nothing particularly suspicious about the pictures themselves, so you try to focus in on what passes between mom and dad, since that's where anything suspicious will probably be.

"Her birthday is Nov 2, 2016," her father notes in one email, in reply to Maxine's question. Odd that she wouldn't remember something like that.

"Clara's first birthday party," is mentioned in one email in October 2022. A followup a few minutes later clarifies that "she's six, but this will be her first PARTY, sorry for any confusion!"

Look for "Rain" or "Ezekiel". Make careful notes of anyone Maxine has communicated with on these two topics, and do a keyword search for them on social media. See where they work, who they associate with, whether they have any children or "adopted" children.
>>
>>35833150
>Call her mother, try to wring the relevant information out of her.

Put her on speaker phone as well if we can. Tell Clara that we've noticed something odd about her childhood first though.

Ezekiel.
well, apparently little Clara didn't come out of her mother directly, interesting...
doesn't meant they aren't blood related tho
>>
>>35833262
I've been pushing for that for a while, but right now I want to get all we can out of the email we've broken into. Odds are good Maxine will take measures if she thinks her personal data has been compromised.

We can confront her when we've got all we can get out of what we have.
>>
>>35833352
Let's just say you've had a program mass download her entire email archives for exactly that reason.
>>
>>35833375
Even with that fiat, it's still better to gather any intel we can about things Clara's mentioned so far BEFORE confronting Maxine.
>>
>>35833352
Fair enough. I'm just not sure there's much more to be learned from her e-mail account.
>>
>>35833445
Given the fact that there are two solid search terms we haven't tried yet, neither do I.

But I'd be willing to take the time to look. THEN we can call Maxine and try to get her to spill the beans to Clara.

If we keep the e-mail stuff secret for now, we might be able to catch some messages being sent or received, possibly regarding our 'transaction'...
>>
>>35833544
It's a personal email, and she seems pretty good at compartmentalizing.
>>
You type in a new search term - Ezekiel. The only other kid from the facility she grew up whose name she remembers. The kid shows up by name only a couple times, most recently in an automated alert following a news story of "Ezekiel Watts" being arrested in 2032 on public exposure charges. The other one is from a "Dr. Naomi Watts," mentioning her son, from way back in 2023. Searching for Watts' name finds that "Zeke" would have been a better search term, so you follow up on it.

Little Zeke, it seems, also appears suddenly in 2022, at the age of six. There's no references to him before then. Other than that, he seems to a perfectly ordinary boy (besides the public exposure charges in 2032, which don't seem to have resulted in any jail time).

Naomi Watts is a scientist with a PhD in Biology; her dissertation is an in-depth analysis of human growth between ages two and six. She's happily married to Christine Haston Watts, who, according to various emails, was a surrogate mother for their child, with Naomi's brother contributing his spunk. Dr. Watts worked for Temporos, the company that put Maxine Hunter on the map, before it fell apart financially back in 2025.

Hmm.

Are there any pictures we can find of Naomi or Christine Watts using the search engine? If so, they might be worth showing to Clara.

we should probably be a bit more discrete about the whole "your life is a lie" thing to Clara.

>Tell Raimes what you've found.

If I was a suspicious man, I would hazard a guess that Clara here was a part of the 'in-depth analysis' for Dr Watts' dissertation...

Then again, if that turned out to be the case, then it is merely something which can be used as blackmail against Dr Watts, as I assume that Human Experimentation/Child Testing are illegal activities....

You close your laptop, putting it to the side, and stand up. "Clara, I'm going to make a call. Can you stay here and be a good girl?"

Clara nods eagerly, and you step outside for a moment.

It takes one ring for Raimes to pick up. You're the first to speak. "What do you have?"

"Lots of little things," Raimes replies. "As you said, there's no evidence of Clara existing before 2022. There are a large number of photographs and home movies of her on Maxine's computer, but none predate that year."

"Anything more interesting?"

"Not to you. Some rather... private, shall we say, videos of her and her husband enjoying themselves. Various games. An unfinished autobiography - it's a dull read, and I haven't found anything interesting or new in there; it's quite whitewashed, honestly. It doesn't have any work files on it, unfortunately, save for various prospectuses, relating to company she's bought or owned in the past. Given that they're public information, I don't think there's anything useful in them. It seems clean, for the moment."

I'm getting a teeny bit of a "Les Enfantes Terrible" vibe here. We should ask Clara how she feels about snakes. Wait, no, that's a terrible idea, she'd take it completely the wrong way.

"I've got some suspicions about Temporos," you say at last. "Look into its prospectuses, especially around 2022. There might be something there."

"Duly noted," Raimes replies.

"Also - the names Naomi, Christine, and Ezekiel Watts. Dig up anything you can about them. Naomi used to work for Temporos, if that helps at all."

"I understand. Thank you for the assistance. I will continue to try to find a way to reassure you of my honesty in this matter."

"Right. I'm going, now. Work hard."

"Understood," Raimes says, before the line goes dead.

You sigh. Then Clara's voice carries over to your ears. "Angel! Angel, please!"

You open the door, heading back to Clara, who's still sitting on the couch. "What?" You ask, a bit annoyed.

She curls her head in, cowed. She shifts uncomfortably, nervous, before speaking up. "There's an itch I can't scratch tied up like this... and my shoes are starting to feel really uncomfortable. I've been wearing them for like sixteen hours now."

"Do you really expect me to untie you, Clara?"

"I-it would be nice..." she says, pouting as she looks at you with puppy dog eyes. "But could you at least take off my socks and shoes? And- the itchy place is on the back of my right leg, just below the knee; it really itches, or I wouldn't bother you."

>Fuck it, the kid doesn't seem liable to be running anywhere. Just untie her. She can take care of herself.

You sigh like a long-suffering housewife and kneel next to Clara, untying her shoes before taking them off and removing her - admittedly quite sweaty - socks. She wriggles her toes when they're free to the open air, sighing in relief. You're half-tempted to tickle her there, but instead you just roll her onto her side and start rubbing at the back of her leg with your hand, searching out the "spot that itches."

After a couple seconds, she sighs in relief, her eyes rolling up. "That's it," she says, and you pull away. "Wait, wait, don't stop, angel, it's still itchy. Keep rubbing it."

You're suspicious, but as the saying goes: in for a penny, in for a pound. You keep rubbing at the spot, and she lets her tongue hang out as she pants in relief. After what feels like a full minute (but is probably more like ten seconds), she finally says, "that's good, that's got it, ahhh, thanks so much."

You pull your hand away, feeling vaguely dirty, but Clara has such an innocent expression on her face that you can't help but be reassured by it.

Also, we have cellphones and social media and stuff, hardly very 90s.

I mean, Blade Runner is considered cyberpunk, and for all we know, Clara is a replicant. We're working on that. Perhaps the QM could be nice and immerse us in his world a little, tell us about all the chinese and japanese signage, but otherwise I'll go with it. Not everybody needs to be a HSLD street sam wirehead 1337 hacker for it to be cyberpunk.

I think that is more stylistic then genre. OP seems to be going for some psychology and suspense, so the writing focuses on like, information and characterization than what our dingy hideout looks like, or what the neighborhood we drove through looked like. >I know some CRW professors who'd say that's sloppy, but for certain subtle values of "show, don't tell" he's working it.
In a very real sense, there is just not space for in-depth descriptions.

I had a quest I was working on/considering running a while back with a very socially adroit protagonist who would describe the motivations of NPCs (that way players could follow along with them), and holy shit there just is not space to fit much at all. You cannot fit that much into 300 words, and if I have to cut something, it's going to be description before it's characterization.

You crack open your computer and start searching for photos of the Watts family. It's not difficult; as it turns out, Naomi sent Mrs. Hunter a photo of the three of them just recently. The picture shows the three of them smiling happily, Ezekiel apparently having won some science fair prize or other.

You put it on full screen and turn the computer to face Clara. "Recognize any of these people?" You carefully study her expression as she stares at the picture.

"The kid... looks familiar," she pauses, staring down the photo. "Wait, wait, I know him. I think that's Ezekiel, all grown up! Wow, where did you find this?"

"Your mother's email," you reply.

"That's so cool," she says, her voice a hushed whisper. "You're amazing. I never would've even thought to look for Ezekiel there."

"And the two women?"

"Um... hmm. The one on the right-" Naomi "-she looks familiar too. I can't place her, though. Maybe one of my mother's friends who comes to the rich people parties?"

"Maybe," you say, turning the computer back around.

the point is to press her for information. we know something is up, and we can make it seem like we know more than we do to get her to spill the beans.

it would also get us another line beyond Raimes, since we don't currently trust him.

What the fuck quest have YOU been reading? We already know Clara's from a lab. We know another kid who came from the same lab. We know that Maxine owned the company that ran the lab, and we know it ran itself into the ground three years after they lost the kids: which apparently happened at the same time.

What more do you POSSIBLY expect to get out of her non-business emails? Emails which the QM has outright stated we've got saved already?

You decide to search through the 2022 emails for other children. It's a bit awkward, but in the end you have a list of eight kids about Clara's age who are mentioned, and you search for their names one by one; three of them only appear in emails from 2022 onward, though in one case, the parent in question doesn't email Mrs. Hunter before 2022 at all, so it's a wash. Still, two new names: Taylor Styles and James Herbert. Plus the maybe-case of Kimberly Watson. Potential former bedfellows of your Clara.

Your stomach growls, prompting you to close the computer. You rub at one of your eyes before glancing over at Clara, who's staring at you expectantly.

"Clara," you start, "want something to eat?"

Clara nods. "I was starting to get hungry, but I didn't want to interrupt you while you worked. What're we having?"

"Whatever hasn't expired since last time I came by," you reply, putting the computer on the desk before heading to the mini-fridge and pantry. There is... beer, crackers, spam, canned beans, some kind of chocolate candy, bottled water, and some potato chips. You come out with the food, and undo Clara's arm again so that she can eat without your assistance.

You take one bottled water and set it next to her for drink; she glugs it down greedily, and you feel a little bad, since she's clearly been pretty thirsty this whole time. You take another for yourself, slowly nursing it.

The two of you start to eat, and you make casual, light conversation. You ask her about her friends, what she studies at school, things like that. Nothing of much substance. She happily chats about herself, clearly happy that you're taking an interest in her personal life like that.

"Incidentally," you start, off-handedly, "do you know a James?"

"Umm..." Clara says, pausing in thought, tapping her finger against her lips. "It sounds distantly familiar, but I can't place it."

"How about a Taylor?"

She unfocuses her eyes, staring off into the distance as she tries to remember. "Oh! Oh, that was the name of one of the other kids from back when I was being raised by caretakers! Wow! Did you find the name of that place? I never could remember it, and my mom was pretty tight-lipped about the whole thing. Said there was an "NDA" over it or something. Pretty ridiculous, right?"

"I guess. And no, I only found some circumstantial things," you reply. "What about the name Kimberly?"

"Nope," she says, popping her lips loudly. "That one isn't familiar at all."

You let the conversation drift off for a while, and eventually you wind up asking her about her plans for her life.

"Well," she says, fluttering those long eyelashes at you, "I'd like to run away with a handsome badass who will be kind and doting with me..."

"What about before you met me? What were your plans then?"

She sighs, long-sufferingly. Then she speaks again. "I'm good at math, and I like it, so I was planning on becoming a mathematician or something. They get paid really well, you know?"

So we know there was a nondisclosure agreement involved in adopting the kids from Temporos, and they probably trained the kids pretty hard.

We may contact her mother: ask if there's anything we should know about Clara since it's clear she'll be with us a while. Any special needs, dietary restrictions, a history of deviant behavior tracing from having grown up in a laboratory, etc.

"Not as well as CEOs," you point out.

"Yeah, well, I don't have the first clue how to be a badass executive and Mom says if I'm counting on inheritance to make my living, I won't be getting a thin red cent, so..." she shrugs in her restraints. "Mathematics it is."

"You're an only child though. Aren't you at least the heiress?"

Clara shrugs again. "I don't know what my mom's will looks like," she says. "She's probably planning on giving most of her stuff to charity, and leave just a little for me and Dad."

"Huh," you say. "Would've figured she'd want you to inherit the family business...es."

"I don't know, maybe, but if she does, she never talks about it."

The two of you wind up discussing a recent action movie for the rest of the meal, Clara getting positively giddy talking about the romantic subplot between the protagonist (an assassin) and the love interest (his target, a girl in witness protection). You didn't find it that compelling, but she thought the scene where he protects her from another hitman by shoving her into his car and driving off was, quote, "the most romantic thing she'd ever seen."

The parallels do not elude you. When she finishes her meal, you tie her arm back up, and she pouts a little but cooperates. You sit back down, considering things; Clara just sits there, quietly and intensely staring at you.

After thinking things through, you decide you have to get in contact with her mother. You briefly consider blindfolding Clara, or untying her... but in the end, the two conflicting desires annihilate one another, and you just tell her to keep quiet and wait for you.

"Mrs. Hunter's office," the voice in the phone says. "Who should I say is calling?"

"The man with her daughter."

There's a hesitation, then you're given waiting music.

"Well?" She asks. "What is it now, you bastard?"

"Now? Now I tell you that I want more money." She starts to speak, but you interrupt her. "Not for your daughter's safety; that's the same price as before. No, I want more money because I know what went on at Temporos, and I don't think you want the public to know."

There's the slightest pause. "You don't know anything. You're just guessing. You've got nothing."

"Am I?" You ask, quizzically. You do know more than she thinks.

"Ezekiel Watts," you start. "Taylor Styles. Clara Hunter," you emphasize the last word. "What do these three names have in common?"

There's a pause that carries just a little too long. "Nothing. They don't share anything in common."

"Now, I don't think that's true, Mrs. Hunter. I think that the three of them were all raised in a special Temporos facility. They were only released into their "parent's" custody in 2022. All of them are the same age. All of them... well, I don't have to spell it out for you, do I? I know."

"That all sounds very circumstantial, friend," she replies, her voice stern. "It doesn't prove anything."

"Really? I wonder what people will think when they hear little Clara's account? I think they'll start to wonder when she says she didn't see her own mother until age six. At the very least, they'll think you're a bad parent, at worst... well."

"Well, what?"

"There will be investigations. You both know there's a paper trail that leads right up to Temporos's door; it'll only be a matter of time before you and all your accomplices are arrested for illegal experimentation on children."

The hesitation before she speaks again is enough to tell you you've struck gold. "There's no paper trail left. Temporos is a dead company."

"Isn't there? If there isn't, how do I know all about this?"

"I don't know. But I'm going to find out, you bastard. And when I do..."

Then hang up.

"You should really reconsider your policy on paying kidnappers and extortionists," you explain. "Otherwise, you're going to be out of a daughter *and* a reputation."

"When I get my hands on you..." she growls into the phone.

"It will be a cold day in hell, ma'am. You *really* shouldn't have tried to kill me." You pause, considering. "It's even worse than you think."

You hang up. Let her stew on that. Hopefully it should put her on the defensive, make her reconsider her decisions so far.

You head back in to check on Clara, who's just sort of lounging on the couch again. "Hey, darling!" She says, like a housewife greeting her husband returning from work. "I'd get up to hug you, but, you know." She wriggles uncomfortably beneath the bindings. "Not that I'm complaining! I understand that you're not sure you can trust me, and I'm willing to wait until you are. It'll just make it all the more special when you finally do." She sighs longingly, apparently imagining such a scenario.

You doubt that Maxine is going to be polite about this. Her men shouldn't be able to track you by that call, but that doesn't mean that they won't be searching three times as hard now.

When we've got an eye on her, she can go without the restraints. If we're sleeping, or we need to leave, she gets tied up again. Small steps.

It's also better to stay put for now. Nobody but us knows this safehouse, and if her dudes are out looking for us moving will make us that much more visible. We'll consider moving again if and when our other contact advises us that it's safer to.

Okay, for real, guys. To try to put the metagaming at rest...

Yandere was the original concept. I'm writing her like I'm writing her; don't assume anything by the label, because her current characterization takes precedence. I had very little written down in advance, and none of that included personality notes.

So, yes, Clara's character concept bloomed from "yandere love," but almost everything about her actual personality is in this quest. Don't assume she's Kotonoha just because of that.

You go through your bag, grabbing your spy mikes and spy cams, keying them into the laptop one by one. You place the various cameras all across the safehouse.

"Sweetie? What are you doing?" Clara asks from her position on the couch.

"Setting up defenses," you explain.

"Can I help?"

"No," you say before going outside to set up the remainder of the cams. Nobody's around, so you can do the work in peace, placing them so that they face outward, away from the windows and doors, giving you a view of anyone attempting to approach. That done, you unpack and reassemble your assault rifle, which makes Clara's eyes go wide.

"H-hey, honey, what're you doing with that?"

"It's just in case, kid," you reply, placing the gun on your lap and adjusting the laptop options until everything's on display. You plug in the wireless earpiece and put it in, giving you a constant feed of the audio from everywhere in the safehouse and several spots outside. You switch the position of the assault rifle and the laptop, leaving one hand hanging on the grip as you adjust your seat so that you're facing Clara.

She gives you a weak little smile. "Sweetie, could you untie me? If anybody's going to try to kill you, I'd like to be able to help..."

If you're basing your interpretation of her character on the quest; go ahead. I don't mind in the least. I'm not saying she's not yandere; just that, the extent to which you believe she is yandere should be informed by your read of her character, not any meta stuff.
>>
>>35839370
At what point is metagaming tied directly into personal character ideas? The MC is pretty pliable at this point for how he's mentally treating her, so it's not like he COULDN'T be suspicious of her, or even afraid of her being yandere even if he doesn't know the term.

Because our entire character is email checking bureaucrat. We could be Maxine's secretary and the story wouldn't be any different.

"How would you help?"

"U-um..." her shoulders slump as she considers, then she brightens up. "I- I could be your spotter or something? You're watching stuff on the monitors, right? I could help you do that."

"You can do that while tied up," you note.

"Ooh!" She practically bounces up and down. "I could tell them not to shoot you!"

"You can do that while tied up, too."

She pouts. "Please, sweetie? I could be so much more helpful if you would untie me. I promise, you can trust me..." She gives you the sweetest smile.

"If I fuck you, will you be quiet?"

Her eyes go wide at that, then she pauses, chewing her lip. "I don't want you to have sex with me just to make me be quiet. I want you to do it because you love me. I'll be quiet if you ask, sweetie. I'm sorry if I'm a bother to you." The dejected look on her face actually makes you feel bad.

"Okay," she says, giving a demure little nod. "Sorry. I just- I've never felt this way about anybody before, and- you're, you know, you're going to run off without me if I don't manage to convince you not to."

"I'm just on edge because of I expect your mom's goons to bust through the door any time now. But seriously, lay off the charm. It's not exactly attractive anyway."

"Okay," she agrees, nodding and looking suitably chastised. "You were wanting to talk about my childhood a lot, right? I could tell you more about it, if you want."

"Sure, why not?" You say, settling in. She regales you with stories, but they're all after she left whatever Temporos facility she was raised in, so they're really just meaningless personal junk. You're interrupted from your conversation by your phone going off. A glance at it shows it's Raimes.

You put a finger to your lips, instantly silencing Clara - hell, you wish that trick had worked with your last girlfriend - and pull the phone up to your ear. "Raimes?" You ask.

"Speaking," the voice replies. "I have something. There were some embezzlement accusations regarding Temporos in '22 that wound up fizzling out. The place the money was supposed to be going... it apparently was largely, if not entirely, made up. People chased their tails about it for months, but there wasn't a paper trail that lead to the culprit and when Temporos went down the drain, the feds left it alone."

"Interesting, though not particularly enlightening."

"It is, actually. There's one important piece of information, here: the fake projects the money was diverted to only started 2021. Embezzlement investigations only picked up that."

"Explain to me like I'm stupid."

"Assuming that this represents where Clara was raised - which seems quite likely - then it didn't exist before 2021."

"Which implies...?"

"That she was being raised somewhere else first. Or - and this is less likely - that the program itself involved some kind of... rapid aging."

"What?"

"As I said: assuming that this embezzlement relates to the facility she was raised in, either she was only raised there for a short period, or the program involved rapid aging."

You pull the phone away from your mouth for a moment. "Clara? Do you remember anywhere before the facility, with the caretakers?"

"Hmm?" Clara says, pausing. "No, no, that's where I was raised for until I was six. Nothing before that. I mean, I remember a couple things from when I was being potty trained, and that was at the facility. So, no. I'm pretty sure my mom dropped me off there like, the day after I was born, so she could get back to work, or something. Fits her, anyway."

"Thanks, kid." You pull the phone back over your mouth and talk to Raimes. "Did you get that?"

"Yes. Very suspicious. I will look for confirmation."

"You do that," you say, hanging up and putting the phone down. Clara's just giving you that moonstruck stare, eying your body like a hungry cat.

If Raimes' suspicion is correct, she's twelve or thirteen years old, chronologically. Hottest twelve year old you've ever met, though.

I'll do 2pm again. I wanted to get to QMing earlier, and I'd finished up my schoolwork, but it seemed like the thread was (relatively) dead at 12. Weird how it picked up so damn much at 2pm, though. Does something important happen at that time?

I won't run on Saturday (busy).

If I run on Sunday it'll be later.
