There's a moment, a short one, after waking up in which you don't remember what day it is, why it's so important, and why you woke up so early. It doesn't last long.
The realisation hits you like a ton of bricks.
Today was the day! Today was the fucking day! Today you're finally going to get a crew together and sign up as a Tank Hunter!

You briefly consider whether you even want to bother with your morning routine, or if you just want to head out straight away.

There's no sense in putting off any future crewmates. Being in a 50 ton moving bunker for extended amounts of time is quite a commitment. You can at least have breakfast and a wash.
You still have a little bit of bread and cheese left, and you quickly scoff it down, before heading into the courtyard to wash yourself. Business as usual, bit of soap from the tub, then taking it and dumping it over yourself. You head back inside after you're dried off to dress, with your favourite leather jacket; the one your father left you before he went missing years ago.

Back into the sunlight, you see your pride and joy waiting outside. She's a real beauty; you'd found her sitting in the Fulda Tank Graves, just rusting away, but there wasn't really anything wrong with her. Abandoned, it seemed, unlike the thousands of other tanks that litter the plains out there.

She's

She's a normal size and weight, the standard universal tank. Maybe a little old, but that didn't stop you. You were amazed when you found out all she needed was a bit of fuel and you could drive her right back home.

After that, you needed to replace a lot of the electrical systems, replace much of the radio and the FCS, and do a lot of fixing up, but it was a good thing to do in your free time. God knows you love fixing tanks, but out here the locals rarely had any tanks to fix, and the Tank Hunters would go to a reputable mechanic in town rather than some kid living on the edge of the wastelands.

And then it came time to repaint her. You scrubbed off the rust and the mud to find

False. The Western tanks held the advantage due to one key thing: thermal imaging.
Whoever can see and shoot first survives. Tank battles have always been decided by that simple fact.

For exactly that reason, you can fil the space with invis characters to bypass the spam filter.

Ergo, invalid vote, but not like it mattered

don't forget 'first hit'. If that first shot misses, well , all of Ivan's 50 buddies now know where you are, and you've got nothing to show for it. Cold War Western tanks were still better in that regard.
>>
>>35844070

I start all my posts with a space there. Also, what 'invisible characters' are you talking about? Some manner of forum coding?
>>
>>35844077
I was thinking about including FCS in there, but I don't know enough about Soviet FCS of the time to know how big of an advantage it was.
>>
>>35844020
They held the advantage in FCS, but soviet armor in the early stages of the cold war was enough to render that first shot advantage invalid in battlefield conditions.

And over time, they improved their FCS too, right around when the yanks finally started getting their act together with composite armor and decent projectiles.

The soviets held the advantage in the beginning, and the yanks pulled it back to a close balance in the middle and end.

But don't start trying to armchair general just because the yanks had halfway decent thermal imaging which could and was rendered ineffective with some bracing MG fire.
>>
>>35844098
well when you vote don't add the space
>>
>>35844100
they were a little behind in getting the gun on target, but were capable of tracking and firing to the same degree the western tanks were, they just didn't have the best optics at the start of the cold war
>>
>>35844098
Who gives a shit how you start all your posts, the QM told you to vote in one very specific way, you didn't and your vote was invalid.

And if you don't know about invisible characters, then thats for the best, they are a problem enough as it is.
>>
With the mud and rust mostly cleaned up, you found an Iron Cross on the side of the turret. You'd been pretty sure before that, but this just confirmed it. Your tank was a Leopard 1.

It's decent enough, really. Armour was a bit thin, but the engine's definitely reliable, and you can definitely get behind the 105mm cannon.
Not to mention that the Leopard 1 was a favourite of Tank Hunters in your area. Replacement parts, add-on packages and even the tanks themselves were aplenty in tank markets, especially in Frankfurt. Being caught between Bayern-Osterreich and The Kingdom of The Rhine meant that there was a lot of German equipment being traded around.

This is what you thought about on your way to the town of Fulda proper, where you were going to find some crew and register yourself as a Tank Hunter.

In which order, though? It might be easier to recruit some crew if you're already a registered mercenary, but inversely it might be easier to convince the THO that you're the real deal if you already had some crew.

Personally, I've always just thought the whole thing East-West 'whose better' was like apples and oranges. two very different design philosophies and intended roles can't be put on a 1-1 easily. NATO tanks were tactically supposed to hold numerically superior waves from defensive positions of a nuclear battle field, Soviet designs were supposed to overrun those positions.

I'm assuming we're around 80.
Don't get me wrong, the Soviet invasion would have swept aside NATO resistance quickly at most points of the cold war. That's why NATO put such a big emphasis on thermal imaging and FCS, so they can see and shoot before they get overwhelmed.

And while the thermal imaging CAN be broken by MG or arty fire, the advantage thermal imaging gives is that you shoot them BEFORE they start laying into you with MG fire, because if they're doing that, they've already spotted you and, more than likely, shot you with something a bit bigger.

The Leopard 1 was not only built in the sixties, nor is the one we are in likely to be either. We are likely in a later model leopard 1. I'm guessing an A4, given that heavy tanks were an option. That means that they're probably Leo 2, Challys, and Abrams. That means at least 1980. However, they are known as heavy tanks, implying that they aren't the main tank. This leads one to believe that they were just introduced.
Hence my 1980 comment.

Well you may as well find some crew first. You hear that it's pretty hard to become a freelancer without a crew to back you up.
You're not exactly sure where to find them or what exactly you can offer them just yet. You have a tank, but since you're not even registered yet, you can't really pay them out of your own salary.

You could go to The Maustrap, where some big league guys from the 11th Black Horse and the Blitzkrieger Battalion hang out.

There's also The Jackboot, which is where you hear a lot of freelancers go for drinks and jobs.

And lastly there's the New York, a bar owned by an American who was a friend of your father's. It's pretty seedy, but you might be able to find some guys for cheap there.

They aren't heavy tanks, but given a post apocalyptic situation, they are significantly heavier than the others, hence why someone could easily rename the heavy tanks.

You park your jeep outside the New York. In front of the place they have a miniature statue of liberty. People say that it's a nice touch, though you don't think there was anyone still alive who had actually seen the real thing. To be fair though, the replica is also actually made of copper.

You step inside. Jack gives you a nod, and you nod back. You step up and take a seat at the bar.
"Usual, Rob?" he asks you. You nod, and he passes you a stong german beer.

How to go about this.

"So, Jack, is there anyone looking for work?" you ask.
"You finally got the bastard running, huh?"
"Please, it's been running since I found out in the tank Graves."
"Haha, yeah. Damn sight seeing that thing drive through town. Anyway, people looking for jobs? There's a few."

He points out a fit woman down the bar. "Sarah Burgess. She's looking to shoot big guns. I hear she's a hunter, but likes cannons. Don't think she minds not getting paid, either, as long as she gets to shoot things."

He points to a man, sitting way in the back in a booth. "That's Michael Weiss. He's a driver, veteran too. Knows his shit more than anyone else in this bar, I'd gamble."

"That there's Erich Kunkel. Guy's in moving and freight, but got let off. I think he'd be good as a loader as long as he gets paid."

"Over there is... ugh," Jack grumbles. "Theodor Marcellus von Grimmelshausen. Cunt insists that he be referred to formally. Of course, you've heard of the Grimmelshausens. That's their heir. Didn't take too well to losing his father and the estate, I think. He's a gunner."

"That girl over there is Susan Lowell. She's a mechanic that came down from Dresden, right at the front. Apparently there was a disagreement between her and her former employers, and she's looking for revenge. She's a driver."

"Last of all, that huge mountain of a man is Robert Linton. He's a loader, apart from that, I don't know shit about him. I think he's from the Dark Riders? Not so sure. Bad news, anyway."

You thank Jack, and think about your options.

It is quite literally one of the worst tanks ever built.

Turning on the heater was likely to fire the main gun accidentally.

Using the Radio caused the turret traverse to go haywire.

The NBC protection flat didn't work so the crew had to wear what was basically HAZMAT suits when operating it.

It's electronics were so bad even an old Fiat could boast better wiring.

It. Was. That. Bad.

Only the early-production models of the original T-72 had those issues with the autoloader, and a good half those cases were just unfamiliarity with the new equipment.

Training and the revision sin the first model upgrade completely eliminated the problem.

T-54s get a bad rap nowadays because they were designed in the mid-late '40s and you can only upgrade a base chassis so much. It's frankly astonishing how much mileage has been gotten out of it as it is.
>>
Well, may as well start with the closest. You pick up your beer and sidle down the bar next to Sarah.
"So, I hear you're looking to shoot big guns," you tell her.
"Yep," she replies.
"I got a big gun you can shoot."
She turns and looks you up and down. "Really, guy? ...well, you got the nads."
You realise what you said. "No, wait, no, fuck, I mean I've got a tank and I'm looking for crew! Crew!" You hear Jack chuckle. "It's a Leo 1, and after I get some crew I'm heading straight to the THO to register as a freelance tank. You in?"
"A Leopard 1? L7 105mm rifled gun?" She doesn't even stop to think. "You bet I'm in. You won't even need to pay me, as long as I get to shoot shit! Thanks a bunch!"
"Haha, yeah," you say. "Alright, you wait here. There's some other people I want to talk to."
"Really, thanks... uh. I didn't catch your name?"
You tell her.
"Thanks a bunch, Rob. I've been wanting to do this for a while."

You then move onto Erich. He's sitting at a table, nursing a beer. You sit across from him.
"Erich, right? I hear you're looking for work."
"What kind of job you offerin'?" he asks.
"I'm looking for a loader."
He cuts you off before you say anything else. "Fifteen percent of payouts. I assume you're a freelancer?"

Accepting the initial offer is a way to make them think they can get more out of you.
>>
"You sure we can't negotiate that price a little bit?" you ask.
"Price has already been negotiated. Four man tank, right? By all rights, I should be taking twenty-five, and I heard that girl say she'll do it for free. I could be taking a third of the profits and it'd still be even. As it is, I'm pretty desperate. Fifteen is as low as I'll go."
You think for a moment. "Alright, fine. Fifteen percent it is. Welcome to the team."
"No need to welcome me. I'll be upfront with you, when I get enough buck for my bang, I'm out, alright? I'll do the job, but I'm not looking to die out in the frontier."
"That's... fine, then," you say. Couldn't really blame the guy, he looks like he's sitting in some tough shit.

Well, now you just need a driver.

Just saying, Sentinel: you're working on borrowed time. Soon as relationship flags are tripped, the clock starts ticking to end this quest with the most number of people satisfied.

An offering of a Super Sherman dressed up as a Nazi tank, for the hopes that that clock remains dormant.

You stop at the door and give it some thought. "Well, Jack," you say. "I've always had a name figured for when I started a Tank Hunters legion. I want to call it the Edelweiss Brigade." You turn to your new crew. "What do you guys think? Edelweiss Brigade?" Erich just shrugs, indifferent. Susan shakes her head with a half suppressed grin and Sarah smiles widely, giving you a thumbs up. "Alright, it's decided. We're the Edelweiss Brigade."
Theodor von Grimmelshausen raises his glass from the booth he was sitting in. "May your travels be glorious, Nobel White Brigade!" he calls out.
"Uh, thanks," you tell him. "Good luck to all of you too." Michael Weiss gives you a respectful nod from his corner, and then you leave.

Susan immediately hops in the driver's seat and thumbs the starter.
"Shotgun!" Sarah calls as she hops in. Erich quietly and dutifully climbs into the back.
"Hey!" you say. "This is my jeep!"
"I don't get to drive a jeep often," says Susan. "Can I drive it? Please?"

"Just this once and never again," you say as you hop in. "Also, if you break it you're paying for it."
"Sheesh, lighten up," she says, then immediately stalls it.
...
"This is our driver?" Erich asks.
"Hang on," says Susan. She fiddles with the pedals and the stick, then says "Alright, I think I got it." She starts the jeep up again, puts it into gear, then starts off.
You can safely say you've never had a smoother ride in this jeep in your life.
"Where the hell did you learn to drive like this?" you ask Susan.
"Just gotta figure out the quirks is all. I'm a mechanic, I probably know how this thing works inside out."
"That's nuts!" you tell her.

You make it to the Tank Hunters Organisation office in no time, Susan seemingly knowing all the shortcuts around town. You hop out of the jeep and back onto the ground.
"Can we make her our regular driver?" Sarah asks.
"It's still my jeep," you say, frowning.
The three of you hop out, but Erich stays seated, lighting himself a cigarette.
"Aren't you coming?" you ask.
"Call me in if I'm needed," he says. "Otherwise, if you don't mind, I'll be staying here."
"Suit yourself," you tell him.

You and the girls step in to the small office that is the Tank Hunters Organisation headquarters in Fulda. Here they handle new registration of mercenary legions, give Tank Hunter licenses and post jobs and missions that people want handled, as well as manage any specific job requests for particular tank teams. Some of the larger legions keep their headquarters in the same building or area for convenience, though Fulda was too small for that sort of thing.

You go up to the main desk and talk to the woman there.
"Hi, I'd like to register a new mercenary group."
"Ah yes, let me gather the paperwork." It doesn't take long for her to gather it up. "Name of the group?"
"Edelweiss Brigade."
It takes half an hour to get all the information sorted, but it all goes without a hitch. At the end of it, you're rewarded with a Tank Hunter license, one that identifies you as an official and recognised mercenary, unlike some of the bandits that roam the wastelands.

Erich tells you he's going back to the New York, as he starts walking. That leaves you with Susan and Sarah and the jeep.

>>

The Leo 1 is CBRN-rated, yes, but considering it's been sitting there rusting for a couple of years, I'd first get the systems looked at and potentially overhauled by a 'professional'.

Dieing by radiation poisoning, tanks but no tanks!

First thread and you're whining already that we don't have the SUPER SPESHUL SNOWKLAFKE TANK

I'll take upgrades for $500, Alex.

Besides, Leo 2 much better tank. Even boxy Leo.
>>
>>35849229

They did create a prototype for a proposed upgrade program, yes, but it was economically unsound. It required a complete overhaul and reworking of the turret, and it was simply more efficient to go for a full Leo 2 instead.
>>
>>35849266
Not whining at all.
>>35849270
Yep, I know. It was based off of a Leo 1A1A1.
>>
I wrote a whole list of stuff I'd do to revamp the C1. But now I can't remember it.
>>
>>35849266
no whining or speshul snowflakes here, it was just developed before the leo 2, and was rather cheap besides, we could have one before we get the cash and progress for a leo 2 if we go for one

besides, you're the one jumping straight for the 3rd gen MBT before we're even out of gen 1.5

>>35849296
a C1 or a AS1+ would be good upgrade paths for us
>>
You rip off the job about demolition works.
"This is fine, right?" you ask the girls, holding it up.
Susan shrugs and Sarah nods.
You hop in the jeep and drive out to your home north of Fulda, out on the edge between the empty plains and the farms surrounding Fulda.

Of course, in lieu of a garden, you've got a big old Leopard 1 in the front of your house.
"Is that our leopard?" Susan asks.
"Yeah, that's her. I call her Fury."
"What, really?" Susan gives you a look.
"What's wrong with that?"
"It's a lame name, that's what. Whatever though."
"When can I shoot the gun?" Sarah asks.
"Well, ammo is expensive. I have a full load, but I'd rather not waste them."
Susan says "You can probably afford to fire a few for training. I want to take her out for a spin too, see how she drives."
"Well, it's not like I have neighbours out here."

It will depends on how much collateral damage is allowed, but demolitions is actually pretty hard if you want to do it with a minimum of explosives and without the damn building damaging anything in the general vicinity when it collapses.

"You can do the shooting when we're getting paid to blow shit up. For now, let's fire her up and let Susan take it out for a spin."
Sarah pouts. "Fiiine," she says. "But when we start blowing shit up, it better be awesome."
"Yeah, yeah, don't worry about that," you say. "Blowing shit up is always awesome."

The three of you hop up onto the tank. Sarah stands up on the turret, while you and Susan climb up to the driver's hatch. Susan hops in, and you point out the various instruments. With a rumble she gets the tank started up. You climb up onto the turret then direct Sarah to her seat. You climb in after Sarah does, pulling your headset on and turning on the intercom.

"Testing, testing, one two three?" you say into the headset.
"I can hear you," says Sarah.
"Same here," replies Susan.
"Alright Susan, put it into gear and let's get moving."
With a roar, the engine revs up, as Susan puts into gear. You feel the acceleration push you back into seat.

And then the engine dies.
"Oh shit, hang on."
