Travelling the woods under the sun wasn't particularly hard to begin with, but it certainly takes a turn for the easier when monsters actively flee your presence.

Jin floats above, spreading her wings, the most active you've seen her in something like.... Hell, since noon. Yesterday.
Sheszka is next to you, keeping a half step behind. It has gotta be instinct- she's way too precise at times like these. You keep your pace even, and just relax.

You head through the ruins without incident, checking your handiwork as you pass through. The building hasn't fallen yet, so that's something. You throw a longing look at the structure. Tomorrow, maybe. Or in a few days.

Now that you think about it, you're kind of awful with schedules.
Guess you got more than just ears from Dad.

You scowl a little, and pick up your pace, skittering through the ruins to the road beyond.

You're closing in on Oakring when the thought strikes you- You have a giant skull attached to your butt, and your hair is more than a foot longer. People aren't going to recognize you.

Maybe Lia. But Humans aren't going to recognize you. You do have Jin, but...

Being attached at a few points is still being attached. Like, claws might only be attached to the rest of the body at their root, still hurts like a mofo if you just tear them out. and they can't be reattached once you do so.

I kind of hoped that the giant skull was fitted to our shell. A carapace with an open cavity is capable of causing a lot of problems. For instance, were we doused with acid, the acid would pool inside of the skull, causing more damage. The same could go for water (though I imagine we would just steam that our. Detritus getting lodged in there and no proper way to clean it just makes the giant butt-skull a little too hard to maintain for no discernable positive gain.

Honestly, I kind of just hoped it was a part of our carapace now, and was really hoping the skull would be made of metal. There's always something for next evolution I guess.
>>
>>35856350
>and was really hoping the skull would be made of metal.
.Why would an organic shell be made of metal?
>>
>>35856350

Also worth noting, a piece of armored reinforcement with a sizeable gap filled with no padding can actually cause more damage to the wearer than having no armor at all. A flat, rigid surface area supported from just a few points would be a sure fire way to introduce critical stress concentrations into the exoskeletal structure when taking the brunt of a huge attack.
>>
>>35856367
Elemental magic.

>>
>>35856411

Well, it works with the elemental motif, which includes fire, earth, and apparently metal bending. Since the default has a giant skull, I was hoping the elemental overtones might do something for our skull as well, as bone doesn't have a strong complimentary nature with either fire or earth. I'll agree though, metal seemed a bit flashy even as I suggested it.

Okay. This is fine. You'd have to come back eventually, anyway.

Your pace slows as the town comes into view, wooden buildings and gently smoking chimneys marking it's place in the forest. The low wall of stakes wraps its way around the cozy village, broken by guarded entrances. And seated at your intended entrance is the most reliable junior adventure in town.

Whose name you can't remember.

On the plus side, chances are he's utterly incapable of hurting you with that sword. So that's something.

And his partner is the lady with strange eyes. Lin? Ling? Lann. That's it.

The boy is hunched over in his seat, sword buried at his feet, while the woman is leaning back in her seat, bow across her lap.
Neither stays seated long.

You rumble down the hill towards the town, and the reaction is immediate. Lann cracks one eye at the sound of your steps- and is on her feet, an arrow in her bow and glowing as fast as you can blink. The boy, on the other hand, manages to get to his feet, but he loses his weapon on the way up- it drops into the dirt in front of him, and he's left trying to watch you and the sword at the same time, scared to lose sight of you for even a moment.
>>
So,Uh,Did we accidentally kill REQM?
>>
>>35856991

That's kind of sad and gratifying at the same time.

You approach, hands raised and spear stowed, slowing to a halt just outside the ring of stakes.

The woman lowers her bow by degrees, keeping it drawn, but directed to the ground. She clears her throat delicately, watching you carefully as she speaks.
"Lady spider. What brings you to our humble village?"

The title gives you pause. Inoffensive, respectful. It kinda hurts, actually.
The boy speaks up as you blink- hah, squeeks up.
"Th-th-there's nothing here! J-just a lumber village! W-we're-"

You flip one hand to interrupt, speaking up as he snaps his mouth closed.
"We have met, yes? I am Lyra."

The arrow walls further, the glow dying as the cloaked woman stares at you.
"You- Wait, how are you- Arachne don't grow that fast-"

Jin circles slowly, her wings casting a spiralling shadow as she swoops in to land, alighting neatly on your skull.
The spider half skull, not the one atop your shoulders.

"What is wrong? Lyra was here a few days ago, yes."
The bow-holding lady shoots the harpy a look.
"She was smaller, before. Less exposed bone."
"It is very comfortable."

"That has nothing to- No. No, I'm not going to argue about this. What happened to you?"
The boy is looking kind of queasy by now, still flicking his eyes from you to his partner, and down to his sword. You catch his eyes.
"Pick it up before you make yourself sick, yes? I'm not going to attack."
You leave him scrabbling in the dirt with a frantic energy, and turn back to Lann.
"There was a dungeon in the woods- I went down with Jin, Sheszka and my sisters. This happened the night after."
>>
>>35856991
>The boy, on the other hand, manages to get to his feet, but he loses his weapon on the way up- it drops into the dirt in front of him, and he's left trying to watch you and the sword at the same time, scared to lose sight of you for even a moment.
Well, he sure knows how to impress and charm a girl.
>>
>>35857018
"A dungeon in the- What, the old ruins?"
"No, I can't fit through the doors anymore. There was a dungeon, Some idiot wizard. I didn't bother learning his name."
"Huh. How would you learn his name anyway? And who is Shekka?"

The wolf stands at attention as you gesture.
"Sheszka. She is my wolf, yes. And the dungeon had more monuments and records of the idiot's exploits than it had traps."
She snorts, turning her hide and trying to hide the smile with her hood.
"Ah, I see. That sounds, uh, fun."

You roll your eyes. Which is really weird, with as many as you have. Your vision does an interesting loop as you offer a snort of your own.
"Can I come in, then? I am hoping to bring Jin home before her mother tries to hunt me down."
"Lyra, you are far too strong, yes? Mom couldn't hunt you."
"That's not what I-"

The woman laughs, waving you through the gate and into the town. She returns to her seat as you pass, and the boy drops onto his own, legs nerveless as he flops straight over the seat and onto the ground.

Did he just faint?

"Ah- Is he going to be okay?"
Lann takes a glance, nodding.
"He gets like this with anything bigger than a harpy. Don't worry about it, yeah? And swing by the guild tonight, share some more stories."
"I will be sure to regale with tales of idiot wizards and terrible dungeons then, yes."

You wave as you prowl into the town, weaving easily through the now familiar streets, drawing wide eyed looks from every corner.

Honestly, I think our next objective should be trying to rebuild the mine and training with the blacksmith and/or socializing with the town guilds for contract work.

> Rebuilding the mine gives us a chance to practice communing with the earth and with magic
> Working with the old man will help us get in touch with fire and learn useful smithing skills (if he will have us)
> Getting contract work is a great way to find scary thing to hunt and sharpen our fangs on, not to mention to help the town grow/thrive (which is going to lead to a 1000 interesting complications.

>>
>>35857329

For a group that rarely sees arachne, having one who looks like a partially molten abomination trundling out of the forest is shocking.

Moreover, as others have pointed out, arachne don't usually evolve in their native environment for years. Even mom, wild spirited though she was, never evolved a second time until recently. All of the power of her youth, all of her experience and hard work and amazing deeds and mishaps lead her to the cusp of it, but she only pushed through recently. Our growth rate is positively ridiculous. You wait and see that Jin's mom will have the same reaction. Hell, she probably doesn't even know that mom evolved yet.

It is not our town. However, I doubt we will be putting people out of a job so much as saving lives. I can almost guarantee you there is going to be something dangerous down there. Moreover, while I realize the ruins are most people's target, I would like to practice on a lower priority, less sensitive project first.

If we mess up the tunnels here, someone can dig them back out. If we mess up the tunnels in the ruins, tons of stone might come collapsing down on top of us, hurting us or possibly waking up something dangerous or destroying something valuable. Besides, the work only "starts" with digging. That is the grunt work and the least profitable by far.

Chances are that Jin's mother is home. Possibly sharpening her claws and waiting for you.

You ignore the stares, and return the few waves you get, heading straight for the cabin. No point in dodging the issue. And Jin's fine anyway. She's probably planting roots in that eyesockets, but that's not really a concern, anyway.

It's not like she weighs anything.

You leave behind the wooden maze- It's fairly organized, actually, nevermind. Jin's home is dead ahead, tree and cabin right where you left them.

You stroll up to the door, and knock carefully. You're not worried about Lia, just- You don't want to put your hand through the door, or anything. Wood isn't anywhere near as solid as it used to be. It's a problem.

There's a noise of assent from inside, and you pull the door open, maneuvering your skullbutt through the door and into the cabin. Lia looks up from her worktable, and simply opts for staring.

You wait, but there's no words forthcoming.

Seconds stretch into minutes, the harpy watching you, unblinking in that way that only an owl can manage, and you can feel sweat beading on the back of your neck, trickling down your spine.

"Ah-"
No good. She's still waiting.
"-We, ah. Went to the dungeon, yes?"

Jin pokes her head around from behind you.
"There was armour, and treasure, and books and a skeleton! And I am getting an am-you-let."
"Erics has to fix it for her first, it was enchanted and-"

One wing is raised, and your voice trails off.
"Just. I do not know how, exactly, you have already grown. Please do not tell me you beat Nialla to it."
"Wha- hahaha- nnnnnoooo. Mom, uh, she-"
"Nia has grown, then?"
"Yes, yes!"
"When?"

The silence is deafening, consuming. You mutter your answer.
"tmrnbfr-"
"Speak up. I cannot hear you, Lyra."
"The, ah. Morning before, yes."
"One day."
"Yes."
"She beat you by one day."
>>
>>35857929
Jin chimes in, swiftly coming to your defense.
"She also beats her in the arena!"
Thanks Jin.
Lia smirks, the slightest twinkle working its way into her eyes as her lips start to twitch upwards.
"Is that so, little one?"

Jin isn't done yet.
"Yes! They fight with sticks, and every time Lyra says she 'cannot move' and 'everything hurts'. And then they fight some more."
"Really."
"Sometimes she can't go back down the tree, so she just sleeps above."
Oh, yeah, keep laughing. You're not embarrassed at all. This isn't embarrassing, you can take way worse.
Stop blushing, dammit.

Lia just starts laughing as you fidget, fingers folding over each other as you look away.
"It's not- It isn't that bad- I- I'm even stronger than she is, now! I- We wrestled, yes, and I won!"
Lia raises her eyebrows before the traitorous harpy destroys your last bastion of self respect.
"She beat you really bad after that, yes."

The motherly harpy cackles, abandoning her little table and heading over, jumping to your back with a single flap of her wings. She gives Jin a once over, and nods, satisfied.

Despite her words, you can hear the relief and gratitude in her voice.
"You and your mother's hobbies aside, you brought back my little girl in one piece."
She turns and meets your gaze.
"Thank you."
>>
>>35857947
You nod back, silently, and she hops down from her shell, returning to her work.
"I assume you've plans for the day, then?"
"The guard- Ah, Lann, yes? She wanted to hear stories. And I wanted to visit Mikhael, for my armour and some other things."
"Have fun, then. You can spend the night, if you like. You're a very convenient guest- People usually protest if you try and stack them so they take less room."

You blush again as she laughs, waving you away, and you turn back to the village, Sheszka at your heels.

I agree with this anon. I kind of would like to hope we aren't actually moving Lyra toward becoming a brat. I kind of miss when mom didn't mostly eye us up like a piece of meat, and when there love was a lot more nurturing, like mother and daughter rather than the burning passion of rivals.

I know mom can't understand what it's like to grow up as a spider with a giant skull on her ass, but come on.
>>
>>35858708

It's not being mean, it's taking the piss out of them.

It's counter-teasing anon, they try to make us embarrassed and we, in turn, turn it back on them.

Mom teases us about hunting huge shit? We show her we just stumble on them and tease her about it.

Jin's Mom teases us about mom evolving a day before us? We point out they have thirty years on us.
>>
>>35858786
this isn't how mom views us
she really does need to train us hard to make sure we don't get ourselves killed.
>>
>>35858786

It's still nurturing, just tinged with NO TRAINING NO.

You make a beeline- spiderline for the forge, glowing all the way. Not your limbs.

It doesn't take long to reach it- the dim building pouring smoke into the sky as always, metal ringing from within. You pull up short, and Sheszka does the same, standing a step apart, same as always.

You turn, facing the harpy on your shell- For Jin's part, she's already puffing up, ready to defend her ability to go into a room full of sparks while covered in highly flammable material. You give her a shot. It'll be amusing, if nothing else.

"I am not obsessed with fire."
You stare.
She stares right back.

"That's... it? 'I am not obsessed with fire'?"
"I am not."
"You're still very flammable, yes. And not being obsessed with fire is not a defence against it, Jin."
She looks at the smoke stained building, pursing her lips.

You pull her off your skull, ignoring the face she is trying to make, and set her on a fence, next to your wolf.
"Now," You start.
"You are both, unfortunately, covered in things that burn."
Jin grumbles and Sheszka nods, waiting on your every word.

"So, while I go in-"
"-notobsessed-"
"Repeating it doesn't make it true, Jinni. Can I ask the two of you to hunt? Work together, and bring down a beast to eat, yes."

Your friends look to each other, and nod, each looking determined.
"Yes."
"Alpha."
You nod, and they head out, straight towards the forest, Sheszka keeping pace beneath the harpy on all fours. It only takes seconds for them to vanish behind a structure.

You're a little worried, but at least they won't catch fire in the woods.
You turn back to the building, and step through the waves of heat, knocking on one wide pillar as you block the entrance.
The hammer's ringing doesn't pause for even a moment, though the old man looks up from his work to look at you.
"Can I help you?"
>>
>>35859053
"Yes."
"Then spit it out, yeah? Don't stand there gawkin', spinner."
"It's Lyra, yes?"

That actually gives him pause, and he leans back, looking you up and down. He cracks his jaw, side to side, and turns back to his work.
"'The hell'd you manage that, kid?"
"Dungeons. Monsters. Training with Mom."
He laughs.
"A whole lot o' the last, huh?"
"She... very much likes training, yes."

The blade on his forge is hammered into shape, glowing metal beaten into submission. His thick-gloved hand lifts it carelessly off the anvil, dumping it into a nearby tub of water, hissing away as it steams over.
"So what are ya doing here then, lass? I ain't gonna hide you from Nia. The woman's a terror."
"I can attest to that."
You share a laugh as he drops his hammer onto the anvil, leaving the huge glove next to it.

"Then?"
"I wanted to learn forging. At least a bit. I can work metal, yes? But I don't really know what to do with it."
He raises one seared eyebrow.
"An when did you learn to work steel, yeah? Can't get much of a forge in a tree, lass."

You glance around the forge...

I mean, there are definitely still those human moments that reveal that she isn't out to beat us into the ground. It's also pretty clear that she's just using merciless training as an excuse to bond with us and as something to ease her perpetually panic riddled mind over our well being.

It's just that the dynamic of expressing that love has changed tremendously over the course of a month. We have gone from a cherished baby in her eyes to the ever on the edge teenager who she must connect to through the school of hard knocks. Things are just moving very fast and that worries me a bit more than it should.

We got the "Shoots Lightning" spear upgrade yeah? But it doesn't channel through the spear? Just shoots it?

Well, what if we grabbed the lightning once it leaves the Spear with our Antimagic / Spellthief fuckery and direct it to wrap around the metal in our spear? Or, if that's not possible, we grab another metal (preferably a highly conductive one) and use it as studs for it to wrap around?

Everything has loopholes, we exploit the fuck out of those loopholes.

Sound = Echolocation

Sound would have allowed us to map that dungeon too, and probably would have upset most of the illusions enough to let us know they were there.

Tremorsense is hilariously broken, yes, but we could just constantly be humming an inaudible tune underneath our breath to have a constant echolocation going on.

You pull your spear free, offering it- He picks it up, hefting the piece, checking the balance, eyes roving over its glimmering form.
"You made this?"
"I- uh, no, no. I took it from some armour in the dungeon, it was- Gah. I resized it, yes."
"It's solid metal isn't it?"
He raps his knuckles across its length.
"How'd you manage that?"

"It's- My hands, I can forge things with them. Kind of?"

He looks to your outstretched digits, nodding, smiling.
"Most people forge with their hands, yeah. Its way easier'n using feet or something."
"That is not what I meant."

He laughs, leaning behind the anvil- He comes back up with chunk of twisted steel, throwing it underhand towards you. You catch it easily; a fist sized ruined piece of metal.
"It's waste anyway. Show me."

Your fist closes over the steel, the patterns limning your hands in burning light. The fur circling your arm glows, flaring out like fire. The metal shifts in your grasp, and you can feel Mikhael watching, stepping closer for a better look.

Your hand opens, revealing the metal blazing with an inner glow, twisting like liquid in your hands- the slag drips free of the pure ore, and you will it to take shape in your hands.

There's not much after the the garbage dripped out- You doubt the old man actually messed up a project- his materials were trash, and so was the result.

But there's enough for your purpose. It shifts, molds itself in your hands, taking shape. A delicate body atop an armoured form, eight legs spreading apart in your palm, the twisting lines of a skull forming over its rear. A little steel Lyra sits in your open palm, cooling quickly in the air, and you hold it out with pride.

"More 'n' a little vain, ain'tcha."
You look down at the statuette.
"I think I deserve a little at this point, yes."

"Stick it in the water and let me have a look already, kid."
It's only moments before he's got the trinket in hand twisting it over to examine it.

"Yer works not bad at all. Amateur all hells, yeah, but not bad."
You huff. He smiles, and flicks a finger against one of its legs, letting it ring.
"But this, yeah. Purifying metal? That's something good, kid. Stick your armour in a corner, grab an apron."
He turns back to the forge, and you step up next to him. Looking straight into the burning embers, feeling the heat embracing you.

You are rendered both impotent and painfully aroused.

You have also gained a cuckoldry fetish, with you as the one being cuckolded.

You sick freak.

Aw man.

What's the cutoff for the 3d100s?

Because we have gotten ludicrously good rolls.

so how will mom react once she learns we learned to forge? that and how will the blacksmith act once we finally get around to dragging mom's sorry butt down here to meet with him. Hey we said we would at some point.

this sixth roll would have made it

but while I don't remember if its first 3 or first 5, its definitely not first 6
>>
>>35860482

REQM takes first three, and I think that's more than fair. He even occasionally takes really good rolls after that cutoff at his discretion.

>>
>>35860553

REQM, have I ever told you that your Spiderbutt is like the sun in the black void?

So very Grossly Incandescent?

Because it is, and Lyra is now apparently a master god damn artificer that makes metal armor and weapons with absolutely no impurities in, which is ludicrously good.

That like, makes LOTR Elves look like village blacksmiths in terms of armor and weaponry.
>>
>>35860553
...well, neat. Based REQM continues to be based. Woo!
>>
>>35860553

Whatever suits you REQM, though I don't mind us not being a natural our very first time at the forge.

It is fair, I just didn't remember which quest did what.

So just watched a video called Reggae Shark. it would be funny to see a travailing Reggae spider. Think about it we just wanna chill because its reggae spider and mom is freaking out cuz hes a bad influence. kinda dumb but could be really funny.

Just a reminder, don't forget to archive.

So.

Jin is obsessed with three things.

Stars.
Fire.
Lyra.

Does this mean that Jin will eventually become Sun-themed and orbit around Lyra's great earthen web? Will Sheszka become the Moon in this ménage à trois?
>>
>>35860553
>you've got a teacher!
I thought the rolls were for how well we learn from the teacher (naturally way better than we would on our own). that is, that the rolls were relative rather than absolute (a 60 with a teacher might be better than 100 on our own).

Either way, its good

heh. all these awesome adults around us.

... Ha. That's actually pretty funny. And cute.

Probably doesn't hurt that apparently Lyra has prodigious talent AND works her ass off.

Rolled 85, 41 = 126 (2d100)

Random rolling to see how well our two hunt, for the fun of it.

Did you just imply the Sun orbits around the Earth?
>>
>>35861828
Copernicus doesn't exist in this world, mate.
>>
>>35862079
I dont think Copernicus changed the way gravity works anon.
Also the world being discussed is debatable.
>>
>>35862265
But without Copernicus no one will question the Sun Harpy orbiting Mother Earth Spider, while Moon Wolf tries to catch up to Sun Harpy.
>>
>>35862439
Said Mother Earth Spider would question it, seeing as how she has memories of a world where Copernicus did exist.
>>
I-is QM kill?
>>
>>35860745

Fair enough, though if I might ask some small favor, would it be possible for us to only learn the bare rudiments of forging in our first go? I mean, I know we are a giant elemental spider. Magic is going to make up for a lot of our deficiencies.

At the same time, I feel that the struggle to attain the prize can be more satisfying than the prize itself. In that vein, I really hope that we have to have a long struggle comprised of several visits to really get our craft underway.

Learning how to make weapons out of metal on cue after a week would be nice. Learning to do a patch work on armor for a few days of concerted practice would also be neat. However, I'd appreciate if our work was kind of only mediocre quality when we take the fast path.

As in, I'd love for the blacksmith to point out that our "pure metal" spear is actually very soft and not very durable at all. Our intuitive understanding of "purifying" the metal, probably took out a lot of the carbon that gave it its strength and durability. Understanding that science along with the specific techniques needed to mesh strength, structure, and function of form would be an art I'd love to see separated from instinct. It also forces Lyra to start using her head for once, which would be an interesting shift in pace.

That's just my two cents anyway, but I hope this catches your eye and that you might consider it. As always, thanks for running.

No he said Jin would be Sun themed and would revolve around us because we are bigger despite our earth theme
>>
>>35864756
Jin is an owl. As a nocturnal creature, she's probably gonna be a moon. Shezka could be a comet.
>>
>>35864756
Nah, we are not earth themed. we HEAVY METAL.
>>
>>35864896
But the Earth is made up of heavy metals.
