Her name is Clara Hunter; she's the daughter of Maxine Hunter, the current CEO of Chalcedon Incorporated. The current time is 2:49 PM, the current date is October 12, 2034. You kidnapped her yesterday when school let out, and she's unharmed at present.

You've done some digging through her mother's emails, and found a number of interesting facts. The story you've managed to piece together (and are fairly confident of, even though the evidence circumstantial) goes like this:

Clara, as well as several other children, goes to a special Temporos facility, possibly after being vat-grown. Using some kind of cutting edge technology, she's rapidly aged to six years old, whereupon she's entered into her parents' care, along with the other children (given to other parents; she's an only child). A few years later, Temporos falls apart and her mother switches companies.

Twelve years after Clara heads home, her mom tries to have you killed, and you kidnap Clara to try to get enough money to start anew elsewhere. Then some kind of underlying personality disorder triggers and she decides she's wildly in love with you. Said personality disorder may or may not be a consequence of her upbringing, but it definitely exists, given the looks she keeps giving you.

>Tell Clara what you've learned so far. She deserves to know.
>Just keep her talking for now. It's something to while the hours away with, anyway. She's really eager to tell you about her childhood. You think she's assuming you're curious because you're interested in her.

"Clara," you start. The phone is in your lap, on top of the laptop. Your fingers are still wrapped around the grip on your assault rifle.

"Yes?" She asks, eyes big and hopeful.

"I've been doing some digging, recently." She nods along. "Into you, specifically. And your childhood." She just keeps nodding, a mix of puppy love and complete trust on her face. "I found something."

"What? There's no need for this big... production. Do you want to tell me to sit down?" She gives a little giggle at that and then wiggles her legs like a fish.

"You remember the facility you were raised in?" She nods. "I don't think it was just some daycare. I have very strong reason to believe that it was doing human experimentation on you."

She furrows her brows. "What, as in... an experimental daycare? Well, I guess that makes sense. Explains why nobody I know ever went to one."

"No, like human experimentation," you repeat. "Not a daycare. Experimentation. Biological experimentation. Growth experimentation. Chemical experimentation. The names, the dates, the paper trail... it adds up."

"Adds up to what, exactly?" She's quizzical, but calm. "Please, I love you, but you're being so mysterious about all this."

"I don't think you were born in 2016. I think you were born in 2021."

Clara just snorts. "Come on, does this look like a thirteen year old girl's body?" She wiggles around in a way designed to emphasize her best features.

You explain the evidence you've found and collected, as well as her mother's responses to questions on the subject. By the end of it, she's just sitting quietly, lips pursed as she stares off into the distance, contemplating.

"Are you okay?" You ask, interrupting her thoughts. "You're starting to worry me."

She smiles brightly at that. "You do care!"

You give her a chastising look, and she looks suitably chastised.

"Sorry..." she mumbles.

After a short silence, you speak up. "So...?"

"I don't know. It's kind of a lot to take in. I mean... it's weird."

"Yeah, I guess it is," you say, though you can't really say you're speaking from experience.

"I don't know. It feels like it should be this earth-shattering revelation that makes me rethink everything... but it's just not. I'm - well, I mean, my dad's adopted, right? And his side of the family - I never thought of them as any less family for it. So, it's like, even if I didn't come from them, like, genetically, or whatever, it doesn't really feel like it matters. And my mom's never treated me like I was an experiment, you know? Just... like her rebellious teenage daughter. And before that like her not-rebellious not-teenage daughter."

"That's good," you say. "It's... it's nice when people have a good relationship with their parents."

She looks at you oddly when you say that, and you think you've revealed more than you wanted to until she speaks. "What do you think? About me being some freaky human experiment?"

>Crush her hopes. Tell her that, since she's thirteen, it would be immoral to have sex with her.

"It hasn't affected my view of you at all," you say.

Clara gives this really big smile, then a flash of recognition rolls across her face, and a frown appears. "Hey, wait a second!" Clara complains, loudly. "What do you think of me, then?"

"I think," you start, calm and professional, "that you are the girl that I kidnapped and that I should focus on the job. Remain professional, you understand."

"Professional, shmofessional," she replies. "Was it professional to kidnap a seventeen year old girl?"

"Thirteen," you correct. "And yes. That sort of thing is what I do for a living."

"Oh? You're a professional kidnapper?"

"That and other things," you say. "Well, I guess I probably won't be doing much of any of it in the future, anyways. Not if things go well."

"Come on..." she gives you this utterly forlorn expression. "Even if you just use me and leave me, I want my first time to be with someone I love, and I just know - and I can see by the way you look at me, you know it too - that I'll never love anyone like this again. Please. Y-you don't have to-" she turns her expression away from you, shaking her head slightly. "No, sorry." She sniffles, her eyes watery. "Never mind. I don't want a pity... well, you know. You d-don't have to love me back, not right away, but- I want you to want it too."

"Why? Because I'm tied up?" She wriggles around so that she's on her belly, her tied up arms presented to you. "You can untie me, I promise I'll still want you."

"No, because you're in a vulnerable psychological state."

"Being in love is always a vulnerable psychological state," she says, giving you the old puppy dog eyes. You roll your eyes and turn away, your gaze turning to the laptop screen. "I really do love you," she whispers, her voice tiny.

"That's not always enough," you mutter. "It takes more than that."

"I'll do whatever it takes," she gives you this hopeless look.

"As in, my area now, or my area at the safehouse you set up?"

"As in, your area now. I know the range of the cell tower you're calling via, so I have a general idea of where you're calling from. Enough to tell you that Maxine's men are in that area. I didn't inquire any further about your change of venue because you seem to want some privacy."

"Thanks for respecting it, then," you reply. "Does Maxine know about which cell tower...?"

"No. I'm monitoring her communications, and she doesn't have access to that information, nor has she yet contacted the police. She did not send men after you when you called her the first time, either."

You hang up this time, after a curt "goodbye," and put the laptop on the desk before standing up and moving to Clara with another burner phone. She looks up at you.

"Clara. If you care about me, I need you to do something for me, okay?" She nods, eagerly. "I can trust you, can't I?"

"With your life," she says, and her eyes confirm it for you.

You tell her what to say before dialing and putting the phone next to her face.

"H-help," she says, her eyes big as she breathes heavily, her expression feigning fear. "Please, God, help..." there's a pause, the person on the other end of the line. "There are some guys with guns, and they're going from house to house... oh God, I don't know what to do. I'm hiding in my bathroom, I'm so scared they're going to hurt me. I'm in the Victoria neighborhood, just off- oh God they're at the door-" you pull the phone away and hang up.

>Pat her on the head and tell her she's a good girl. Then sit down and wait for the fireworks.
>Untie her. She's shown she's trustworthy, you're willing to trust her back.
>Call Maxine and threaten Clara, make her push her men further, ensure there will be a problem.
>Write-in.

Well I'm glad you're being completely impartial about this, no biased writing which could influence people to vote one way or another or anything along those lines.

But wasn't this your mistake in the first place for misinterpreting the votes? And then going into the easily samefaggable final destination right after as well, seems unnecessary and time wasting.

But it wasn't, the result in the first vote was, as >>35858441 stated, actually heavily in favor of just headpatting. That has changed with the current vote, whether it was samefagging or simply the majority, we don't know.

"Thanks, Clara," you say, softly patting her on the head, and she gives you smile bright enough to light up the room, nuzzling her head into your hand.

"I'll do anything for you," she says, and the look on her face is both reassuring and tempting. You consider it, working your jaw back and forth, then at last lean over her, undoing her bindings. Her smiles broadens even further, and she whispers soft little "thank you"s as her eyes start to water. When her hands get free, she comes up to wipe away the tears, and you slowly undo the bonds along her legs. After you finish freeing her, she stretches and rubs at the areas where the bindings were. "I'm so glad you trust me," she says, smiling up at you. "Thank you so much."

"Uh, you're welcome," you say, eying her with suspicion. She just keeps that warm smile on her face. "Help me barricade the door?"

She nods obediently and hops off the couch, doing as you instruct her as you barricade all the entrances to the house, closing the windows and curtains, shutting off the power, and generally settling in for the long haul. When the two of you are finished, she's fairly sweaty, being apparently unaccustomed to this kind of manual labor. She flops onto the couch while you sit down at the desk again, looking at the camera feeds on your laptop for any sign of Maxine's men.

"Hey, Clara," you say, turning your gaze up from the computer, but still keeping the screen in your peripheral vision. She turns to you, attentive as always, clearly hanging on your every word. "Can I sit on the couch? This chair's starting to really dig into my ass, and I'd like to lay down." She starts to get up, and you stop her. "No, you don't have to get up," you say, standing up with the laptop and rifle in either hand. "Just... scooch back a little." She wriggles obediently backwards until her back is pressing into the couch's back. You sit down by her knees, watching the screen and leaning back over them.

As you wait, watching and listening for any activity on the monitors, Clara adjusts her position, gradually moving around until her head is resting on the side of your thigh, clearly happy as a clam as she stares up at you. You pat her on the head again, absently, and she just sighs softly, adjusting her head and letting you gently run your fingers through her hair, stroking her scalp as she lays there.

The two of you are interrupted from your reverie by the not-so-distant sound of gunfire. It's not on the camera, but looking at the mikes and triangulating it... it's a hundred yards away, tops. Very, very close by.

>Peek out the windows to check on it.
>Better to let it play itself out. Be calm, stay put.
>Get in the car and run for it the moment the gunfire finishes. Either way the fight goes, you don't really want to be here when it finishes.

We may want to hid Clara in the bathroom or pantry soon.
>>
You settle in. Clara looks up at you, nervous, and you just reassuringly pat her. "It'll be fine. Just stay put, kid."

The sounds of gunfire eventually die down, and then there's shouting and movement. A car starts, and drives away; you catch it speeding across one of the screens. It's not the cop car, but an armored, privately owned car, painted jet black. You let out a breath you didn't know you were holding in as it speeds past, and Clara just sits there, quiet, a look of concern on her face.

"You okay, kid?" You ask, stroking her off-handedly.

"D-did some people just die?" Clara asks, looking up at you.

"Probably," you admit. "I'm not checking. Too risky."

She fidgets, obviously uncomfortable. "I-I- if, if anybody died, they died because of me, didn't they? I mean- this whole thing... I'm the one they're searching for, I'm the one who gave the phone call... oh God, I think I'm going to be sick." She does look queasy, and she rushes off to the bathroom, immediately vacating the contents of her stomach into the toilet, a sound that easily reaches your ears.

>Talk to her. Reassure her it's not her fault.

In a major officer involved shooting, backup keeps fucking coming.

Even in the days of North Hollywood, the cops kept shooting until SWAT came in and killed the guys. It took a while, and they started off horribly outgunned, but eventually the cops got there. And cops nowadays are much better armed and armored, and these are already responding to a report of armed robbery.

>>35859686
>>Talk to her. Reassure her it's not her fault.
The mercs knew the risks, and were probably killing or injuring others in their assault. They should have backed down when the cops came for them. Their deaths are on the mercs, not her.
>>
>>35859686
>Write-in.
"Technically they died because your mother doesn't want to pay the ransom, huge difference."
"Besides, private security firms typically employ enough body armor to survive this sort of thing, not to mention, them killing the police would get them in enough red tape that they'd never work again."
"On top of that, the Police have enough medical attention and training readily accessible to them that it's likely none of them would die, unless their enemy was going directly for lethal attacks, which, as I said before, is unlikely."

Only way to do that would be to surrender to the police, and give up any hope of riches. Are the police winning/able to actually confront this corp/not co-opted though?

The fact that the mercs resorted to firing on the police says some fairly negative things.

By forcing them to remain in cover and legging it to one of their bullet proof cars.
>>
>>35859929
>we can assume
Based on what? Based on it being a few decades in the future?

In 1993, the LAPD got its collective ass handed to them by two armed robbers with no training. Officers in the US continue to take lethal hits more than twenty years later, because personal armor just hasn't improved enough to defeat intermediate rounds at close range and still be light enough to issue to regular responders.

So unless they jumped straight to sending SWAT, or the future equivalent, your "assumptions" are based on no evidence, and fly in the face of reason.
>>
>>35859946
Squad cars aren't bulletproof. They will never BE bulletproof, because it's a shitload of money to do it without losing the limited performance most police-issue vehicles have due to MASSIVELY increased weight.

Again, you're making assumptions based on convenience at best: things that would make the write-in you voted for true when all logic suggests it isn't.

You put aside the laptop for the moment, though you carry your rifle with you when you head over to the bathroom, where Clara's still leaning over the toilet, her face partially obscured by the lid. She pukes again.

"Look," you start, sighing. "This isn't your fault. Okay? I made you make that call, I kidnapped you. Your mother tried to have me killed, your mother sent those mercenaries out. You're innocent."

She pukes another time. "I'm not, oh God, I'm not," she says, pulling back a bit, wiping at her eyes and then her lips. "Oh God," she says, sitting down, her head resting against the wall, as she looks at you, forlorn. "This isn't romantic at all. I thought- I don't know, this would all be settled before anything really bad happened. But- people are dying, because of this. They're getting shot at. Please," she says, looking up at you. "Please, I don't know what to do, just- just solve this. You're- this is your thing, isn't it? Don't you know how to make it stop?"

"My job was never to *stop* people from dying," you say apologetically. "Sorry."

"I could tell her I'm in love with you, that I don't want her to hurt you. I c-c-c-could pretend that you r-raped me, could beg her to pay you off before you do it again," she sniffs, loudly, snot still coming out of her nose, which she wipes at with the back of your hand. >>

As far as it takes to get the money.

Though, speaking of the money, at this point I'm wondering if we should just bill this whole thing to Hunter as a "consultancy" charge, because seriously, we're teaching her a lot about what's wrong with her security. Are we technically still employed with Chalcedon? There's got to be some contracting fees we can get out of this.

You sigh, looking down at her. She stares up at you, her lower lip quivering, tears still streaking her face, that nonsensical trust and love still clear in her eyes. "We'll move out, then you can call your mom. Come up with the best story you can in the meantime." She nods, a tiny little smile on her lips.

You gather up all your equipment before heading out, excluding the spy cams and mikes that were attached to the outside of the building; they're gone, as far as you're concerned. The two of you get in the car and Clara stares out the window at the shot-up police cars and the ambulances as the two of you start to drive off trying to either assuage her guilt or confirm it. When you leave line of sight to the site of the incident, it doesn't look like she's done either.

You're careful to follow the speed limits and obey traffic laws, and the whole time Clara just kind of sits with her hands in her lap, quietly fiddling. At one stoplight you reach over, putting a hand on her shoulder and smiling at her reassuringly, and she gives you this look that says "I'm not sure you can make it better, even if I really want you to."

It starts to get late as you keep driving, and you hear Clara's stomach rumble, so you go through another drive through, this one just for some ice cream. Girl deserves a treat for what she's been through. She... appreciates it, but isn't exactly happy, at the same time.

You pull up next to the safehouse Raimes set up, and head inside, leaving the keys in the stolen car's ignition again. Hopefully someone will actually steal the car this time, like you want them too.

She's not refusing to negotiate, she's ACTIVELY doing everything in her power to make the situation worse and put her daughter in even MORE danger.

You know what, this might be a prudent option, at least to touch base with Raimes and see if he's unearthed anything new. If we're making a play at Claire's mom he deserves to know about it in advance.

>You'll go with the truth: she's in love with you and doesn't want her mom to keep shooting.

Might as well ask Mom if any of the observers mentioned issues like the one Clara seems to be exhibiting.

Not like she'll buy it, but whatever.

that's a really stupid idea...

now, if she told her mom that we'd sell her as a brand new sex slave if she refuses to pay... i'm sure that'd motivate her a bit more...

Yeah, the same way all our other threats so far have worked out just the way we expected.

Oh wait, she's literally insane and still thinks sending more mercs after us rather than cutting her losses is a good plan.

Chances are the mercs' primary target really isn't us. It's her. Some assets are better destroyed than compromised.

"Just stick to the truth," you say, handing Clara the burner phone. "You're in love with me, and you want your mother to stop sending mercenaries after me." Clara gives a little nod as she calls up her mother. "Speakerphone," you note, and Clara nods, hitting the button and putting the phone down.

"Mom?" She asks when the phone is picked up.

"Clara?" It's Mrs. Hunter's voice, a mix of panic and relief in her voice. "Clara, are you okay? Where are you? What's happened?"

"Mom, it's okay. I'm not hurt. I'm okay, Mom. Nothing- nothing bad has happened to me."

"Oh thank God, pumpkin," her mother says. Pumpkin? Really? "Is that bastard that kidnapped you there? Can he hear you? Are you safe to talk?"

"It's fine, mom, everything's fine. I-I need to tell you something."

"I'm always here to listen, pumpkin. Do you know where you are?"

"Y-yes," she stutters out. "But that's- I can't tell you. I need you to do something for me, Mom, please."

"Anything," her mother says.

"Please, don't send any men after me. I don't- I don't want anyone to be hurt on my account, and- my, my kidnapper, he's..." Clara hesitates, licking her lips, her eyes flicking back and forth between you and the phone. "He's... I'm... C-can you just give him the money and let him go?"

"Pumpkin," her mother says, voice chastising. "We can't just pay off every two-bit kidnapper. It encourages others."

"It's - I just-" Clara hesitates, "I love him," she forces out.

"What?!" Maxine screams over the phone.

Hate to cut it here, but I don't think we'll hit a better break point than this in the next update or two, and we're closing in very quickly on the bottom of page 10...

Next thread... I'd like to do a slightly later than usual thread on Friday, but I'm not certain I'll have the time. I love you all! Thank you for reading!
