RULES AND STATS: http://pastebin.com/bECzgrjY

You are KARLA WEISS, a Belkan fighter pilot looking to carve your own place in the skies!

Yesterday, you had just recently intercepted an enemy bomber wave headed for your base, and managed to destroy all the bombers and chase off their escorts before they could get anywhere close to their target. However, even though the attack was thwarted, it looked like the higher ups were spooked, judging from this new briefing that's been hastily organized. You see Samantha setting up her materials.

Meanwhile, the room was already full of pilots, though you notice it was slightly emptier. You remember that one of the allied squadrons, Knife Squadron, lost two fighters during the defense operation.

There was also Alpha squadron, that was late to the party. However, you were aware at least a few of them were boasting that their presence precluded a second attack wave. An assertion that had zero proof whatsoever.

And of course, your own wingmates were present, in very cheerful moods due to yesterday's success. Plus, you all had a batch of fresh kills under your belt.

Merc I would like to talk to you about the extreme lack of realism in the air combat here, we should be having extended posts that describe the monotony of level and straight flight for three hours before we even reach the kill box, and also I am frankly still disturbed at how an F-4 Phantom was able to match an F-22 clearly you have to do some more research with your quests because this isn't realistic at all

also i am positively disturbed the unreasonable loadouts being described here we don't even seem to be using actual weapons, but rather are using some sort of anime-bullshit do-everything long-ranged faggot-seekers, we're in a phantom for fuckssake why aren't we flying straight at our targets for a solid minute trying to guide in Sparrows that have a 70+ percent chance to miss their targets.

Otherwise, p.good quest 9/10 it's okay

You turn to your wingmates. You felt it would be too awkward just sitting there silent the whole time.

"Hey, guys." You say. "Don't you think yesterday's attack was kind of... strange?"

"What do you mean?" Lara blinked. "I had to defend airbases from attack ALL THE TIME."

"Yeah, well, I didn't." You shake your head and sigh. "But don't you think it was incredibly convenient for the enemy that they just HAPPENED to attack when we were at our weakest?"

"When you put it that way..." Lilian frowns. "That does seem rather strange."

"Hmph. Just overthinking things." Amy shakes her head.

"Still..." You frown, obviously still troubled. "That must mean there's a spy here."

"Probably." Lilian nods. "But I'm sure you're not the only one to catch on. I'm sure Command is working on it, too."

"Yeah, I guess we can leave the spy hunting to the pros." You lean back in your chair. "I don't know the first thing about spycraft."

Huh, maybe you should've paid more attention to your uncle's lectures about the subject. But.... it was too late for that now.

"Okay everybody, quiet down!" Samantha yells to grab everybody's attention. "The briefing is starting now!"

On cue, the lights dim and the projector activates, showing a new tactical map of a large island chain.

"As most of you already know, the rebels attempted to bomb our base yesterday. Thanks to efforts of our pilots, though, we managed to intercept and destroy the enemy force."

Of course she wouldn't name you all specifically. You guess so as not to inflate your egos or anything like that.

"Now, thanks to surviving personnel we managed to capture, as well as data we managed to recover from the wrecks of the bombers and AWACS craft, we've found out that the rebels' airbase is located in this island chain." Samantha points to the tactical map. "The problem is, we don't know which island it is. Command has determined that it's too dangerous to send in recon planes, so we'll have to wait for Yuktobania or Osea to route a spy satellite to the location. What we CAN do, however, is to slowly choke them to death."

Samantha then shifts the map to the west, where Estovakia's shore is visible. There are also a number or red lines going from the mainland to the island chain.

"We believe the rebels on the islands are being directly supplied by sympathizers in the northern territories, both by sea and air. We'll be tasked with interdicting these supply convoys and hopefully weaken the rebels before we stage a full attack."

"What sort of resistance can we expect?" One of the pilots asks.

"Nothing that we haven't faced before." Samantha says somewhat vaguely. "But we do have unconfirmed reports that the rebels have hired their own mercenaries to bolster their forces, so stay on guard. With that said, we will begin distributing flightplans for each squadron. You'll all have specific areas to patrol."

With that, attendants begin walking down the aisles with sealed folders, each bearing a specific squadron's name. Lara collects your flight's folder and tears it open.

"Aw nuts." She frowns.

"What's wrong?" Lilian asks.

"We got the nothernmost route." Lara sighs. "Cold weather and bad visibility all around. It's gonna be a real shitshow."

"Oh dear... in the Demon Edges?" Lilian frowns.

"Huh?" Amy blinks.

"There's a perfectly rational explanation for all those disappearances." You sigh. "There's poor weather and visibility up there, so of course incidents are far more likely. Also, statistically, the northern waters aren't even all that dangerous. Other regions suffer more accidents. Plus, a majority of the existing reports are either inaccurate, embellished, or plain made up."

"Thanks." You nod and split up with your squad, heading over the hangar that acted as Artemis' unofficial store. As always, Quint was there, legs up on a cargo crate as he read a magazine of presumably pornographic nature.

"Oh, hey there... Valkyrie, was it?" Quint grins. "Come to purchase something?"

"I'd like to see what you have available." You say noncommittally.

"Well, I've got wares as long as you have coin!" Quint chortles and hands you a catalog. "Here you go!"

SHOP LIST: http://pastebin.com/sBQuPLdw

You frown as you look through the catalog. You only had $3500 in your account right now. No way you could afford any of this. Quint seems to notice your frown, too.

"You know, if you've got trouble paying, we can arrange something..."

You instinctively recoil, dropping the catalog and clutching your arms close to your chest as you give Quint a nasty glare.

"What? No! Nothing like that!" Quint sputters. "What the hell made you think that?"

"You seem like that kind of person." You narrow your eyes.

"No, seriously, I'm not like that!" Quint shakes his head rapidly. "I hate spending money and girls are no exception!"

"Okay, so what are you proposing?" You raise an eyebrow.

"It's within my power to offer loans to our pilots, if they so wish to take one." Quint nods.

Yeah sure it can, when it's wearing nothing, has burnt most of its fuel, is rigged for high alt speed runs and is doing its best impression of a satellite rather than a warplane.

It is impossible for it to achieve those speeds with missiles and guns and fuel and avionics suites onboard, so in the context of this quest, it is literally impossible for it to fly that fast.

"Ha! The Mafia's got NOTHING on me!" Quint laughs. "But it's your money, so no matter how much I want it, it's still yours to spend."

"Well, at least I have an idea of what I have to aim for." You sigh. "Take care, Quint."

"Hope to see you back again so we can conduct some actual business!" Quint chuckles and returns to his presumably pornographic magazine.

You meanwhile head back to the hangar, where your planes are already being prepped. There, you see Smokey, overlooking everything his crew was doing.

"Well, it took me and my boys all night." Smokey grunts. "But we did it. One freshly painted Phantom, ready to fly!"

And what a beauty it was. A vivid blue/grey with a feather pattern painstakingly painted on both the tops and bottoms of the wings. On the side of the nose and tailfin was the head of a Valkyrie painted in your likeness.

You have absolutely no clue how much work it took for them to get it done in such a short time.

The 23 was inferior to the 22 in every way that mattered, of course it lost.

Stealth airframe means precisely nothing if you stick all kinds of emitters on it and expect it to fight from afar. Whoops, looks like your fancy superfast super stealth jet is actually not very stealthy at all when it's running at full bore and stands out like a sore thumb to any modern IR missile, and the fact that it would need a radar to track targets with before popping off those fancy AAMRAMS means that every fucking person within 200 nautical miles knows there's a stealth fighter out there, and now it's revealed its position by firing a missile that doesn't even have a greater than 30 percent chance to strike an actively maneuvering target! Hooraaaaaaaaay!

Meanwhile, the Raptor is comparably fast, if not as fast, and can actually do something about opponents in BVR and WVR combat with equal deftness.

If USAF went with the 23, it would have been the F-35 in its given role, that is how big a piece of shit that jet would have been.

The best part is it's not even the most ridiculous starfighter variant. There's two VTOL projects using it, the first being this. The triangle thingy spins like a helicopter to take off vertically, the main engine lights up, then the top locks when forward speed has been achieved. And this is the less crazy one.

Modern ships are pretty much aluminium foil compared to battleships. An arleigh burke probably has less than 50mm of RHA deck so any antitank bomblet with shaped charges are going to drill holes into it. Swiss cheese would be an apt comparison. Doesn't necessarily mean it'll sink the ship of course. Not recommended since anti air missiles are a thing and it's much safer to shoot beyond the horizon with ASMs.

That's just wrong. The F-35 will be one of, if not the, most numerable planes on the planet. Plus, it is actually cheaper than several commonly used mainstays of certain air forces.
What puts the nail in the coffin is the US's insane air numbers. That won't change with the F-35.

"All right then, you 'd better get up in your plane and get ready to take off!" Smokey pushes you towards the ladder leading up to your cockpit. "The other squadrons are already taking off!"

---

A couple hours later, you were flying above the northern ocean, AKA the Demon Edges. Of course, there was cloud and fog cover EVERYWHERE, effectively killing your visibility. All you could rely on was your radar, and even that was getting interrupted due to constant storm activity nearby. If there was any place to get into a surprise furball, it would be here.

You see the vague outline of Lara's Eagle as it begins to gradually drop altitude. You likewise begin dropping down slowly, easing your Phantom downward gently. Fucking fog. You didn't completely trust your altimeter, which is why you were going slow and steady. The reason the raptor was cut was because the F-35 was on the horizon. There's no such thing. Plus, public opinion on 5th gens is changing. The program has gotten its shit together.
Plus, if it was going to be cut, it would have been cut by now.

You're not quite sure what happened. At first, you're momentarily blinded from the flash as 6 missiles launch off your wings simultaneously, streaking out to their targets. This close, there was no way they could miss, and the six Floggers in front of you literally evaporate in a cloud of smoke, fire, and shrapnel.

Almost immediately, you can hear screaming and cursing over the open channels as the Flogger pilots try to figure out what the hell was going on.

"What the hell was that?!?!"

"I don't know!"

"It's a fucking Phantom!"

"Shut the fuck up! Ghosts ain't real!"

The three remaining Floggers immediately dive away, while the three immediately behind you fire their cannons reflexively. You can feel the impacts of bullets rock across your fuselage.

>3 damage sustained! Your plane has 9hp remaining!

As a reflex, you dive for the deck as well to gain some speed.

"Valk?! Where the hell are you?!" Lara cries, a bit worried. "I think I saw explosions!"

"Whoa! Okay! I'm homing in on your transponder right now! Just stay alive!"

Easier said than done. Cannon shells were still flying past your fighter, and you were pretty sure the Floggers were now dropping back to get missile lock on you.

That wasn't even consider the other three Floggers, either. You hope that they've scattered for good and won't return. Or worse, they were regrouping to attack again.

In older myths, the Valkyries were directly responsible for those "Misfortunes on the battlefield". (i.e. Stray arrows killing a man, good armor being penetrated by weapons, and every other bit of bad luck one can experience during a battle)

Essentially, it was the Norse explanation as to why Good people die and Bad people live.

You take evasive maneuvers, deciding to buy yourself enough time for Lara to come in and support you. You go full afterburner while turning as sharply as possible at your speed. You can feel your Phantom's airframe groan and protest as the stresses you're putting it under, but risking structural compromise was a better alternative to taking a missile up the ass.

"All right, the cavalry is here!" Lara whoops as she and Lilian dive down on the Floggers on your tail The poor bastards don't even stand a chance, with Lara immediately knocking out two while Lilian mops up the third.

"Thanks." You sigh, finally taking a moment to relax.

"Don't relax just yet. There are still three Floggers unaccounted for." Lilian warns.

"Ah, they're probably running home to their mommies!" Lara chortles.

"Hey, where's Magnet?" You ask. You don't see Amy's Warthog anywhere.

"All right, let's go give Amy a hand, then." You say.

"Let's." Lilian says approvingly.

The three of you home in on Amy's tranponder, and you finally get close enough to see the Warthog flying circles around a convoy of three cargo freighters.

"Hey hey hey, lookie at what I found!" Amy says cheerfully.

"Looks like we hit the motherlode." Lara says happily. "Did you tell them to identify themselves?"

"They won't answer." Amy grumbles. "I already called it in to Loki, and he's sending over some airborne troops to handle it. Problem is, I think we're all running low on fuel."

"That is a problem." You frown.

"Plus these guys aren't stopping. That's also sort of an issue."

Problem is that we're getting low on fuel. I'm sure the Airborne troops would love having us around, but unless there's a KC-135 loitering around osmewhere we'll need to get back to base.

Still, it does mean that those boarding parties would have a sweet Modern Warfare-esque cinematic escape if the Floggers came back and sunk their own ships.

"Okay, we'll stay on station as long as possible." You say.

"Got it." Lara says. "If they so much as sneeze, we'll send them to the bottom."

"All right." You nod. However, you hear a beeping sound, letting you know something was wrong. "Fuck."

"Something wrong?" Lilian asks.

"I'm losing fuel a lot faster than I thought." You grumble. "I did get shot up a bit."

"You should head back to base." Lara says. "I'll cover you. Angel and Magnet can babysit the ships."

"Oh woe is me. Such a hard life we have here." Magnet says sarcastically.

"See? Totally fine!" Lara laughs.

"All right." You sigh. You suppose you shouldn't push your luck any further today. Besides, you did pretty well, all things considered.

You and Lara break off and head west back to base. However, like before, the flight is boring and uneventful, and all you can see is clouds, fog, and more clouds and fog.

Suddenly, you catch a whiff of movement and swerve to the side just as you see an F-15 shoot past you.

"Ha ha, very funny, Stripes." You grumble. "But I'm not really in the mood for games here."

Silence.

"...Stripes...?"

No answer.

"Lara?" You start sweating. Was your radio down? You check your radio. No, it was perfectly find. There wasn't anybody transmitting. You check your HUD, but you don't even see Lara's IFF transponder.

She wouldn't turn it off just to mess with you, would she?

"Lara, this seriously isn't fucking funny." You growl, or at least try to sound menacing. However, you couldn't help but feel extreme unease.

You see Lara's Eagle flit by again, and this time you follow after it. It dives down into the clouds and you follow.

"Lara, I swear to god, if you're fucking with me I'll shove a missile up your-"

And then your words die in your throat as you get a better look at the Eagle. It wasn't Lara's, but you recognized it all the same.

And then it performs an impossibly fast turn to face you and your missile lock warnings wail.

Of all the fighters, it had to be this one. It had many names: Galm One, Cipher, or the most popular of all, the Demon Lord of the Round Table. The greatest ace of his generation, popularly believed to have singlehandedly won the Belkan War. His achievements were so mythic and unbelievable that many people thought that he was no mere man, but a literal demon come down to Earth to wreak havoc. And you knew for a fact that every Belkan could instantly recognize his plane, and no matter their stance on the Belkan War, always felt a bit of anger or unease at the sight of his plane.

And here he was, right in front of you.

You could swear you were smiling under your helmet as you thumbed the safety off your missiles.

You each fire off a single missile, which both pass by each other in the air. You see yours score a solid hit on the enemy Eagle, gouging a crater into the armor, but the plane was still flying. Meanwhile, the Demon Lord's missile scraped against the side of your Phantom's fuselage just above the wing, gouging a deep rend in the outer skin before plowing into your left tail stabilizer and shearing it off.

And in a split second, the world seems to slow down as both you and the Demon Lord's planes fly past each other. You try to get a good look at the cockpit, the plane shoots by too fast.

>Warning! You are at 1hp!

Your Phantom, grievously wounded, lists heavily to the side as the Demon Lord, seeming unphased by the damaged you caused to it, loops around for another pass. You quickly try to turn your Phantom around to face him, but your controls suddenly feel sluggish, like they were being jammed up by paste.

Meanwhile, the Demon Lord draws every closer, and you get the ugly feeling that you'll meet your end here, up in this cloudy hellhole when suddenly, a bright flash of orange swoops in between you and the Demon Lord. The Demon Lord immediately breaks off, and you are surprised to see a Su-27 Flanker with black and orange tiger stripes engage him, vomiting gunfire and missiles at the Eagle.

You decide enough is enough, and you hit your afterburners again to get as much distance between you and this odd furball as possible. However, thanks to the cloud cover, you lose track of how fast, how far, or even which direction you're going, but you keep going, as long as it means you're headed away from the Demon Lord.

"...Valk! VALK! Do you hear me?!" You hear Lara's concerned voice.

"I'm here." You say quickly, almost relieved to actually hear another voice, much less a friendly one. "Where the hell have you been?"

"Where the hell have YOU been?" Lara retorts. "I take my eyes off you and radar for one second and poof! You're gone! I was starting to think that Demon Edges stuff was real! Your plane is fine right?"

"I think I took a missile hit on the left side." You grunt. "Can you take a look for me?"

"Sure thing." You see Lara's Eagle barrel roll over your Phantom. "Huh, I don't see anything. Just a few cannon holes, but that's it."

"Really?" You blink, wondering if you were going insane.

"Yup. No major damage."

That was... weird. You were so sure your Phantom was on its last legs...

You shiver. You suddenly felt extremely cold, even in your climate controlled cockpit and insulated flightsuit.

You briefly consider telling Lara what just happened, but quickly quash that idea. She'd probably never believe you, anyways. However, there is one thing that you had to ask.

"Hey, Lara, have you ever seen a Flanker with an orange and black tiger stripe design?"

"Hmmmmm, can't say that I have." Lara responds. "Any reason why?"

"Not really." You sigh, deciding that you really needed a drink when you landed.

---

By the time you land back at base, you finally get an update from Angel about the supply convoy. Apparently, she and Amy were just barely able to make it. The airborne troops seized the ships without issue, and were redirecting them back to the mainland. Preliminary reports seemed to suggest they really were carrying supplies for the rebels. They were carrying everything an army needed, like food, medical supplies, and bullets. Apparently, one of the freighters was even hauling a number of aircraft and spare parts.

And thanks to Artemis' contract, it all belonged to the company now.

<<MISSION ACCOMPLISHED>>

---

However, when you asked Smokey to try and pull the guncam footage from your plane, it turned out that some of the cannon shells you got hit with during the dogfight with the Floggers shorted out your camera, so it wasn't working during your encounter with the Demon Lord, or whatever the hell that was.

You had a LOT of drinks that night. Thankfully, your wingmates thought it was to celebrate the six plane combo kill you got.

Still, the timely appearance of that Flanker. Something deep in your just couldn't let it go. Where did it come from? Why did you help? These were things you felt you needed to know.

Colonel Antonin was clearly not pleased.

"You mean to tell me, that almost an ENTIRE SQUADRON of Floggers was wiped out by a single plane?" He scowled, eying the three surviving pilots of the squadron he sent to escort one of his supply convoys.

"It.. it wasn't human!" One of the pilots stammer. "A Phantom straight out of the Demon Edges!"

"The Demon Edges are just a fairy tale!" Antonin spits, slapping the offending pilot and glaring at the other two. "I expect you to give me a PROPER after action report! Dismissed!"

Rubbing his head from a sudden migraine, Antonin made his way back to his quarters, where he saw one of the mercenary aces he hired, Lancer. The same man who lost his wingman a few days ago.

"Got jumped by a Phantom?" He said.

"It could have been anything." Antonin grunted. "The few men I have left are young and superstitious. They believe in the most ridiculous of things!"

"Well, if you find out anything, let me know, all right?" Lancer grunts as he steps out of Antonin's path. "I got a score to settle."

Antonin decided that once he got back to his quarters, he was going to get a drink. Or several.

derp, meant 3-5, should be 5-7 total at those rough payout rates and kill tallies

That's a looong time in a story. We'd be better off taking out a loan before Lancer grudge matches us.
>>
>>35888606
It kind of is. It's the character we are playing. A knight in the air.

Just taking a look at the price list here.

>F-20 Tigershark - 15000
>Saab 37 Viggen - 16000
>F-16 Falcon - 20000
>F-18 Hornet - 20000

>Quick Air to Air Missile (QAAM) - 20000: A highly advanced, extremely maneuverable, very accurate missile.

Woah. That's one expensive missile package.
It doesn't happen to have the ability to fire itself backwards given the expense, does it? Damn Gelb team A.I. always pulling off that one trick.
>>
>>35888609

That's exactly what Honor System is.

That isn't a mechanic jackass, it is a single skill that allows us to partially recoup the monetary loses of not shooting enemy pilots in the back as they flee. That's basically just a small bonus, nothing like a central gameplay mechanic.

I can wrap my head around it fine, it still doesn't change the fact you're projecting the PS2 game onto Merc's quest and making shit up trying to justify your arguments and reasoning.
>>
>>35888960
How about this
>I choose to always take a right hand turn in a game
>As a result, the DM gives my character a bonus at turning right
>>
>>35888913
That skill only applies to crippled enemies who are in retreat. The three floggers were in perfect shape before we had our wingwomen blow them away. It doesn't count as merciful if you just have your allies make the kill instead.
>>
>>35888972
You don't even know what you're talking about. Okay, follow this train of logic:
We made our character a knight in the air. Hence we got a bonus for doing knightly shit
>>
>>35888937

>>
>>35888992
Precisely, a bonus, a cherry on top for behaving in a certain way in a very rare circumstance. That is not a central gameplay mechanic, and it in no way a key character trait.

It's totally irrelevant in the vast majority of threads.
>>
>>35889066
I never claimed it was a central gameplay mechanic. We just happened to go full knight and start on Knight style, hence the bonus we got.
>>
>>35888989
No I meant the other three that fled before we dove, not the three on our tail, there were 12 Floggers in total, we bagged 6, the others 2 and 1 respectively, leaving the 3 that fled
>>
>>35889088
>I never claimed it was a central gameplay mechanic
>and start on Knight style

You just did.
>>
>>35888992
>We made our character a knight in the air. Hence we got a bonus for doing knightly shit
That's all there is to it, non of this Aces Styles mechanic or anything else, we play the character a certain way and get a slight bonus from it.

So fuck off with the
>>35889088
>and start on Knight style
nonsense
>>
>>35889098
I did not. Knight Style is sparing those already defeated and not attacking innocents or potentially innocents. Tell me that we haven't done precisely that.

>>35889109
I'm sorry you haven't played any Merc quests or Ace Combat.
>>
>>35889129
I've played 3 of Merc's quests and 3 AC games, you're the one trying to project the games mechanics into Merc's quest, which Merc has already stated don't exist in it.

You're the one who apparently can't read nor possibly envision that we're playing a character in a narrative and not beholden to a game mechanic that is not in this quest.
>>
>>35889092
How shot up were they? I thought there were 9 floggers.
>>
>>35889165

12.

We shot down 6, 3 infront of us broke away and fled and survived. 3 more went to gun our tail and were taken out by our squadmates.
>>
>>35889129
I've played or archive binged every Merc quest aside from VMQ2 and Gundam Build, and what you're trying to tell me is going on doesn't match up with anything in those quests. Kindly desist your blatant metagaming.
>>
>>35889165
There were 12, we blew up 6 immediately, 3 fled and dove, 3 were behind us and hit us with their cannons, and we dove to evade the ones on our tail, which our wingwomen killed.

No idea what happened to the 3 that dove and fled following our initial attack.
>>
>>35889186
>metagaming
I'm not understanding this. You're calling using an outside term to describe what /tg/ is doing as metagaming.
>>
>>35889187
Ok that makes sense, but I still wouldn't expect our skill to apply to those three. From the pastebin I gathered that it really only applied to enemies completely taken out of the fight.

By the sound of it those 3 were still air worthy, just spooked.
>>
>>35889158
Then clearly you've already noticed people shouting about Soldier style or Knight style before now, right?
>>
>>35889203
Oh so you're just using a term from the original game series to describe a general tendency of /tg/ to play Karla in a particular way?

My bad, I thought you were doing something else entirely.
>>
>>35889215
Which is just pointless because the mechanic does not exist in the quest.

>>35889203
/tg/ is playing a character, what that anon is trying to do is use information from outside the quest and character's knowledge, as justification and reasoning behind arguments and votes.

Stop using 'Knight Style' as reasoning and justification for actions and arguments when that mechanic has no bearing on this quest at all.

Play the character, not the PS2 game.
>>
>>35889262
The character is knight style incarnate and is a pretty good description of what we're doing. It is also an apt description and should be used, seeing as what the source material is.
Further, the mechanic is not the point, it is the theme. If we went Soldier our character would be one way. If we went Knight, as we did, our character would be another.
>>
>>35889282
>The character is knight style incarnate
No it is not, fuck off with that metagaming shit

Stop playing a nonexistent mechanic and play the goddamn character.
>>
>>35889307
I'm not. Take a look at Karla and tell me she is not a knight. Hence I am using the term Knight Style to describe the tendency of her character.
>>
>>35889282
Stop. Our decisions in that thread dictated the nature of a single auxiliary bonus, not a key character trait. Aside from that attribute and the very rare circumstances it applies to, nothing about Karla is inherently chivalrous.

We still dictate her actions and as such, can still have her behave in a generally merciless fashion if we so choose. We write Karla's character, not some gameplay mechanic from a PS game that helped inspire this quest.
>>
>>35889349
>nothing about Karla is inherently chivalrous.
Other than, I don't know, how we've played the fucking character?
>>
>>35889358
Anon, go and reread the threads, we've not gone out of our way to be chivalrous or knightly.
>>
>>35889368
I am right now. I suggest you go back yourself. The biggest two choices being
>Spare him.
and
>Doesn't feel right shooting a man in the back.

Further, people play Karla as she was in VMQ to an extent, as that is already established characterization.
>>
>>35889387
Those two decisions are hardly going out of our way to be knightly, we just didn't feel right shooting him in the back, being chivalrous would have been to escort him to friendly airspace before we broke off

>Further, people play Karla as she was in VMQ to an extent, as that is already established characterization.
so you jump to even more metagaming, trying to treat this character as an entirely different character from an entirely different quest

Karla in ACQ is not Karla from VMQ, and to think or play her otherwise is retarded and you guessed it, metagaming

so fuck off
>>
>>35889358
>You could swear you were smiling under your helmet as you thumbed the safety off your missiles.

Hardly strikes me as knightly.

Look, apart from of a few votes, Karla hasn't notably behaved as knight. For the most part, she operates as any other soldier of fortune would. In her first engagement she opted to show mercy to one enemy pilot, and got a skill bonus for similar situations because of it. It isn't a core trait of her character.

If you're using the phrase as a general tendency, that's fine, even if I don't quite agree with it given the context. But if you're arguing we should play her in a certain way because of muh vidya, please stop. This is a quest partly inspired by Ace Combat, not Ace Combat itself.
>>
>>35889387
>people play Karla as she was in VMQ to an extent, as that is already established characterization
>Blatant metagaming

Honestly there are huge differences between VMQ Karla and ACQ Karla. We're currently opting to go for a significantly less bubbly, optimistic personality in this quest. Less knightly princess, more gritty, dour Belkan dog-of-war.
>>
>>35889413
>being chivalrous would have been to escort him to friendly airspace before we broke off
That's wrong

And I'm sorry you don't like it. Tough. Her initial characterization was in part determined by that. It would be metagaming to continue doing that, but no one is.
>>35889417
>Hardly strikes me as knightly.
It's not unknightly.
>>
>>35889443
Of course. But would you not say that people's initial play was effected by VMQ's Karla?
>>
>>35889468
I would not. I would argue that initial play reflected how we wanted to play this character in that specific instance, not a desire to mimic the behavior of a different character (albeit with the same name and face) from another quest of Merc's.

I would argue that by and large this character shares very little with the Karla of VMQ.
>>
>>35889468
Nope, completely different characters from different quests that share nothing but a name and general appearance.
>>
>>35889456
Continue doing what? Arguing that she is a distinct character from VMQ Karla, or arguing she isn't an archetypical knight? Because I'm not the only anon here saying you are metagaming like crazy.
