There's a word for what happened yesterday, on the thirtieth of July.
There's a phrase, too- 'first contact,' or something similar.
But... the word- the word is more important.

The word is, 'breach.'
A tragedy has befallen all mankind, and nobody knows it even happened.
God help us all.

Don't forget about INSIGHT CHECKS!
It's simple! Just:

YOU are Akari Takamichi, the last, best hope for a universe damned to a Heat Death by the laws of Thermodynamics, and a damn fine Pyrokineticist to boot.

You are a member of the organization known as Judgment, albeit still a rather new one, and your time with the law has, thus far, been... exciting.

You've saved the world with logic, talking down a pair of crazies and converting them to your side, and being warned of an impending alien invasion. You set them to the task of repurposing their genocidal gas into something to help with this supposed invasion, and that was that.

On the 29th, you were visited by a strange-looking white cat-thing. 'Kyuubey,' it called itself.
When you realized just /who/ it was, you turned it to ash without a second thought.
It spoke directly to your mind, the same way the Eye does.
Creepy little freak.

You've been training with your cold flame, learning how to fight in close quarters, both from Mato and from Nee-chan. You'd never tell Mato, but Nee-chan's instruction was far more helpful- more based upon leverage and finesse than brute strength, which Mato has in spades.

Your ears were 'repaired' on the 28th, reinforced with some sort of something-or-other. Supposedly, you won't be suffering ruptured eardrums again anytime soon.
So... there's that.

Mato, Fate, and Mokarin all showed up today, to be there for your release.
Well, Mato was already with you, but- well, that's to be expected, really.

And then, there's today.

July 31st, [REDACTED].

The strange-looking, blue-gray biped that stands before you- along with its apparent personal bodyguard of six yellow-and-orange-clad, armored... well, bodyguards, as near as you can tell- its arms spread wide, its three-fingered hands open, so as to present the palms.

It has no nose- rather, there's a strange-looking... slit... in its forehead and face, between its eyes, and above its mouth, which is speaking to you.

Its hooved feet are planted squarely on the pavement that composes the road in front of the hospital, whose doors you've just stepped through.

Mato's right hand finds its way to your left, and, to your surprise, Mokarin's left finds its way to your right.

You shoot a sidelong glance at the gynoid, and see that she's holding Fate's hand, too.

Fate's already got that axe of hers in her right hand, and there's electricity crackling off of the same arm.

“Greetings, Takamichi Akari, Human Pyrokineticist from Earth. I am [INCOMPREHENSIBLE], representative of the Tau Empire, and I extend to you an invitation to join my people and our allies in our quest. We serve the G̸͕͇̈́̌͒̀ͭ̋ͮr͔̝͎̫̫ͪ͒̊̚e̪͉̿͆͊̿̽̾̑a̳̯̳ͥ̒̽̈̔t̸̻̹͉̟ͩͫe̢̪̠̭r̴̳͐ͪ̐̌ ̸̺̭̝͓̓̏͂͌G̻͚̗̺͇̘ͤ̂̚õoͫ̄̉ͨ̈͛̈́͠d̮ͭ̄ͤ , and your power could revolutionize our space-travel technology.

“Thus, I extend this invitation to you- and your people- join us, and unite the galaxy under the Tau'va.”

You shudder at the phrase 'greater good'. Something seemed off about the way he said that.

In fact, something seems off about /him/.

Mato squeezes your hand.

“The Greater Good,” she breathes. “Akari... I think you should accept.”

Fate growls. “You can feel there's something shady about this, can't you, Akari-chan? They're ready for a fight. Hell-” she jerks her chin towards the wall of metal things behind the blue-gray guy and his armored buddies. “-I'm pretty sure those aren't friendly hug-machines.”

… You hadn't even noticed those.

The Eye sends you a feeling of unease.

Mokarin tilts her head slightly. “[POTENTIAL THREATS DETECTED.]”

You narrow your eyes a bit and give the hands you're holding gentle squeezes.

They let go, and you step forward a bit and cross your arms.

“What is it that you really want?”

You almost have to shout, but... not quite. You're forced to half-speak, half-yell.

The alien takes a few steps forward, too. “Your people are not yet exploring the stars as we do, so it is no surprise that you are not aware of the... unexpected challenges... of long-range space-travel.” He makes a sweeping gesture to his guards and the mechs, which form tight ranks, behind him. “You see, my people- the Tau- have not developed psychic abilities, and thus cannot travel as efficiently through space as we could if we had. Rather, we have to skip across the fabric of realspace- it is highly inefficient, and requires vast amounts of energy.”

“Your ability to generate large amounts of energy, then, would be invaluable to us- and the G̸͕͇̈́̌͒̀ͭ̋ͮr͔̝͎̫̫ͪ͒̊̚e̪͉̿͆͊̿̽̾̑a̳̯̳ͥ̒̽̈̔t̸̻̹͉̟ͩͫe̢̪̠̭r̴̳͐ͪ̐̌ ̸̺̭̝͓̓̏͂͌G̻͚̗̺͇̘ͤ̂̚õoͫ̄̉ͨ̈͛̈́͠d̮ͭ̄ͤ- as would your species as a whole, for its ability to produce the ones you call 'espers'. In joining us, you would be uplifted to a level of technology matching ours, and supported by our ever-expanding interstellar empire.”

You find yourself rubbing your temples.

He's giving you a headache.

Why is he giving you a headache?

Mato doesn't have their numbers, because they thought she was creepy as all hell.
Also, I think it's probably kind of rude to start another part of a conversation with someone important, then turn to your friends and talk.

If you want to do multiple things, put them in the order you wish to do them in. It makes things a whole lot clearer and easier to understand- and write- for me.

I established that your phone was relatively normal early-on, though, without thinking about it. I don't wanna go back on my establishings, y'know?
If I do that, then how can you guys trust me?

Still, just bring it up the next time you end up talking to Miku. She'll be able to hook you up, being rich and a technopath an' all.
>>
You turn around to consult the others. “Are you gals getting headaches, too?”

Mokarin shakes her head. “NEGATIVE. I AM INCAPABLE OF HEADACHES.”

Fate looks concernedly at Mato, who shakes her head. “I'm fine. Actually, I feel great. I mean... we're not alone, Akari- there are other species in the universe, peaceful ones, who want to join everyone together for a common goal. This is wonderful. I feel like there's hope. More hope than ever before.”

Fate shakes her head- not in the 'no' way, but in the other, almost... disappointed kind of way? You're not sure how to describe that sort of head-shake, not with words, but you understand it. Isn't that odd?

“Psi-stone,” she mutters, “makes me immune to mind-altering influences.” She looks you in the eyes. “If you catch my meaning.”

“Mato,” you say, “can you call Mami for me? I need to talk to her.”

You get the sinking feeling you might end up regretting not letting Mato contract with that space-cat, now.

Mato hands you her phone, and Mami greets you, “Akari-chan? Is something the matter?”

You give Mami a rundown of the situation, answering her questions along the way, and ask her to get ahold of anyone who can't be brainwashed- whether because they've got a Psi-stone or because of some other thing- as well as those Sororitas cosplayers you met before.

Onoe-san, the tallest of them, and their 'leader'; Oshiro-san, the fencer girl; Mihayr- err, Mihaylov-san, the kinda-scary girl with the nose-ring; Tanako-san, the really slender and nimble one; Suzuki-san, the one with the low-level gravity ability; Tsukino-san, who you seem to recall having a rather cool-looking tattoo and rather large muscles; and Kaminski-san, the scrawny Level 3 who actually happens to be your age (which makes her pretty tall, now that you think on it).

Mami, judging by the scritch-scritch-ing, wrote their numbers down- you wonder why she doesn't just commit them to memory, but only briefly.

“We'll be there as soon as we can, Akari-chan. Try not to do anything hasty, okay?”

You agree, and, after goodbyes, hang up. As you hand your phone back to Mato, you notice that Fate is finishing up a phone-call, too.

Mokarin seems to catch on to what the two of you are doing, unlike Mato, who is humming a happy tune. The gynoid tilts her head slightly, apparently curious.

He doesn't particularly give a shit about this universe anyways, so he has no real reason to help us. Othinus blew up the Toaru universe once and he basically just went "Aw, that's adorable."

You take a deep breath, then turn to face the aliens, these 'Tau' who seem to have an unfortunate interest in you.

The sunlight glints off of their multitudinous visors and weapon optics (at least, that's what you assume those things are), and it strikes you just how many of those mech-suits there are.

There's... plenty.

The fact that you actually think, 'Maybe this is just a show of force...' strikes you as being rather unfortunate- you know perfectly well that they're not nearly as peaceful as they seem to want you to believe.

“So... I can't help but wonder why you're here, talking to little ol' me,” you half-yell, “I've no political power, influence, or anything of the sort.”

“On the contrary, Takamichi Akari,” the Tau replies, “you have more power than anyone else on this planet, with perhaps a few exceptions. You should be firmly within the uppermost caste of society.” He pauses.

“And, should you join us, you /will/ be. It is worth mentioning, I suppose, that your 'world leaders' are being negotiated with as we speak. It wouldn't be prudent of us to assume that one being speaks for the entire world, after all.”

… Castes, huh?

Oh boy.

You gesture to his cadre of war-machines. “I'm also curious as to the reasons for the size of your... 'escort.' Would you be so kind as to enlighten me?”

He regards you neutrally... you think. “We are not fools, nor are we blinded by our idealistic and optimistic views. Compliance through negotiation is not guaranteed.”

… Oh boy.

Behind you, Fate mutters, “We come in peace. Join or die.”

>... you need to stall. But... how? (Write-in!)
>Ask what he means by that.

The Tau nods, seemingly glad to do so. “The Fire Caste are our warriors,” he says, gesturing to his buddies/hug-machines,

The Eye warms slightly. [What is a 'caste'?]

“The Air Caste are our pilots and navigators, through both the skies and the stars.”

[… it's a system of organizing people, so that people are born into their roles in society. They also tend to get smaller and more exclusive as they get more 'important'- so there ends up being a hierarchy. It's... not usually a good system. Oppressive, y'know?]

“The Earth Caste are our scientists, engineers, farmers, and constructors.”

After digesting it for a bit, the Eye thrums, as if agitated. [Freedom,] it 'says', [is the right of all sentient beings.]

You fight the urge to smile. [Yes. It is.]

Yeah, okay.

Time to stall.

Fortunately, you know just want to do.

“How did the caste system come into being? I'm interested to know the history behind that.”

You can practically see his eyes light up. “You see, in the beginning...”

Fate sniggers quietly. “Good job, Akari-chan.” She glances down at her phone. “Minami-chan's already here.”

You don't turn or otherwise acknowledge her, of course- you're pretending to be really interested in your history lesson.

“I'll be damned if I know /where/ she is, though,” Fate mutters.

You glance over at Mato, who, just as expected, is listening intently.

Maybe you need to learn how to brainwash people, too? You try to imagine it- saying, 'Mato, you /want/ to study.'

[AUTHORIZATION GRANTED,] Mokarin buzzes, [SAFETY PROTOCOL OVERRIDE... ENGAGED... SAFETY PROTOCOLS... DISENGAGED.]

After a few more minutes of listening to the Tau's lecture, Mato's phone boo-doops. “Oh,” she says, looking around as if searching for someone, “Mami-sempai says she's here, and ready whenever you are... but... I don't see her.”

Suddenly, it seems like your heart's racing at a thousand beats per minute.

The cavalry has arrived, it would seem.
The question now is... what do you do?

Mato frowns. “What's she ready to do, anyways?”

Fate smirks. “You'll see,” she mutters.

Mokarin has her staff in her hand- you managed to miss her pulling it out again, you guess.

Mato pouts a little and crosses her arms. “What does that mean?”

You find yourself grinning, too. “It means...” you say, before you erupt into flames, “... that peace talks have... broken down.”

You can hear the sparks crackling off of Fate and her weapon over the silence that has settled over the Tau.

The speaker seems dumbfounded. The mech-suits begin to stir. The armored Tau flanking the speaker raise their weapons- boxy rifles that look rather unwieldy- and level them at you and your compatriots.

[HOSTILITY DETECTED.] Mokarin buzzes, almost sounding angry, [COMBAT MODE... ENGAGED.]

Fate's weapon warbles something in English- its head swivels up, and it becomes some sort of laser scythe or something. It's cool, but you question its practicality.

Mokarin points her staff... forward. She doesn't really seem to be aiming at anything in particular- just... in their general direction.

You release the Eye of Judgment from where you'd been keeping it, and it turns its angry gaze upon the aliens arranged before it.

You'll just lead the charge yourself, then.

You crack your knuckles, and the flames that engulf you flash a nice violet color before turning almost entirely into the cold, black flame you so recently developed.

You can practically hear the jaws dropping.

You didn't really tell anyone about this, huh?

You clear your throat, and point at the speaker.

“FOR FREEDOM!” You bellow, before drawing the scary murder-knife and charging at the Tau you suspect was brain-washing your girlfriend.

His guards only get off one shot apiece by the time you're in their midst- only one of them even came close, and it seemed to disintegrate on contact with your aura of black flame, which is rather large and extends out behind you somewhat, due to your rapid movement- and, ducking under the weird bladed-thing the speaker swings at you, you swipe him across the torso with your icy knife, causing him to burst into eerie black flame.

The second volley is disrupted rather unceremoniously as Fate leaps into the fray, scything down two of the three bodyguards on your right in a single motion.

One of the shots flies uncomfortably close to your head, though, and you realize that their weapons aren't nearly as loud as you'd have expected.

The roaring of chainsaws- no, chain/swords/- is the next thing you hear- that, and the CLANG CLANG CLANG of huge metal boots pounding against the ground.

You turn to see the humongous form of the Sisters' 'Onii-sama', clad in equally huge powered armor, as he smashes into the trio of warriors on your left, wielding a big hammer or something similar.

You sidestep a thrust from the speaker's blade-thing, and deliver a few more quick strikes that spell his demise- not due to your knife-work, but because of the cold-fire. Fate dispatches her last opponent as well.

The hulking suit of armor that is Tanjiro Abe bellows, his voice distorted somewhat by the speakers in his helmet. It makes him sound more intimidating, you think.

[ALL SYSTEMS NOMINAL] Mokarin buzzes.

[FIRING FOR EFFECT.]

… wait, wha-

AAAAAOOOWWWW GOD, WHY?

THOSE WERE YOUR EYES.

YOU WERE SEEING WITH THOSE.

YOU AREN'T NOW, THOUGH.

YOU'RE TOO BUSY BEING BLIND.

You blink away tears and wait for the white light to subside.

You aren't certain, but you're pretty sure you heard similar cries of pain from your comrades.
It was hard to tell, what with all the exploding that was going on.

[ALL TARGETS ELIMINATED.]

You hear the sound of shoes hitting the ground nearby.

[PERMISSION TO HUG?]

DAMMIT, BOSS! IWAS ON THE EDGE OF MY SEAT WAITING TO SEE WHAT WOULD HAPPEN!
BUT IT'S OKAY, AS LONG AS WE GET ADORABLE HUGS.

JUST A SINGLE HUG WON'T CUT IT, BOSS. I NEED MORE HUGS. AT LEA- fuck it, all caps is annoying to read, Not to mention it makes me look like an obnoxious prick.
Anyway, I want to see Spehss-Mahreen-dude whose name I forgot get dog piled by his Battle-Sisters after the battle, while a confused Mato cries and hugs us and a jealous Fate hugs Mokarin, who is still hugging us, just for the lulz and adorablez.
>>
“Okay, fine,” you grumble, spreading your arms wide, and being thankful you sheathed your knife before watching the fireworks.

[YAY.]

You're pulled into what feels like two people's sides, and entangled in what you can only guess is one of Fate's arms and one of Mokarin's arms.

It's funny, you decide, how Mokarin's so much more... comforting? When she hugs you.

Maybe because her arms are fleshy, as compared to the unnaturally-cold and unfeeling (which, ironically, isn't true- her arms clearly have /some/ sensory input, at least in the hands, as she's able to function very well with them) black metal of Fate's augmetic limbs.

You wrap your arms around them, too, and, moments later, you feel a pair of large, soft, warm /things/ enveloping your head, even as the rest of Mami pulls you all into a hug.

“That was amazing, girls,” Mami says, with the cheery voice of someone who can see. Oh, Mami- so good at hiding your-

WAIT.

SHE HAS LIGHT POWERS.

SHE TOTALLY /CAN/ SEE.

You hear a sniffle, and, as your vision is resolving into blurs of barely not-white, rather than what you'd see if you held waterproof printer-paper in front of your face in a snowstorm, the inhumanly-strong arms of Mato pick the four of you up in some sort of abominable super-hug.

“A-Akari-” Mato whimpers.

You reach out to pat her on the head, before realizing that you still can't see- fortunately, Mami picks up on your intention and guides your hand to the center of Mato's pigtailed head, where you rub gently in a circle, cooing all the way. “Shh, shh,” you say, ever-so-softly, “it's okay, Mato. It's okay.”

Mato calms down as you pat, slowly but surely.

“Okay, okay, I get it, and I hate to ruin the moment,” Fate gripes, “but if I'm held at this angle for much longer, two things are going to happen. And they include me shocking everyone, and me puking my guts out. Only, not in that order.”

Mato sniffles again.
“I can't see to put you down.”

“Oh, come on. What the f-”

I MEAN, be sure to visit the archives http://suptg.thisisnotatrueending.com/archive.html?tags=Raildex and drop some votes onto the threads, to weight them down so they'll sink to the bottom of the ocean and feed the octopi!

Also, ask questions or something, either here, or in THE LAND OF ASKING, WHERE QUESTIONS ARE ASKED AND SORT-OF ANSWERED ask.fm/EsperQuestQM
Or, y'know, you can ask questions here
I'll be around for awhile

Either way!
Goodnight, and thanks for playing (and bearing with me)!
I look forward to seeing you all next time!

Good run, I get the feeling that the battle's over but the war has just begun!
>>
>>35909966
Good show tonight, I appreciate that you picked up on the reference, unless that was just blind luck. I do hope there's going to be more combat next time though.
>>
>>35909966
Thanks for the thread, Boss. It was incredibly entertaining.
I'm still waiting for the day we can talk down those Xenos and explain why the Greater Good is bullshit.
Possibly with words, but likely with Burning and Fire. And UnFire.

Also, what kinds of Finishing Strikes would fit Akari? I'm partial to a Hell and Heaven style one, but I kinda want to make one using the Burning Glory.
>>
>>35910086
What's to keep us from developing both? We can have different finishing moves depending on the situation, since Hell and Heaven is more suited for melee combat and Burning Glory is only good for ranged attacks.
>>
>>35910086
I still want us to properly re-learn Fireball so we can do something akin to a Stoner Sunshine, but the other ideas work too. Shine Spark and J-Phoenix are also pretty cool, though I don't even know where to begin as far as duplicating them.

I RECOGNIZE NONE OF THESE TERMS, BY THE WAY

UNLESS SHINESPARKING IS FROM METROID
IN WHICH CASE
I QUESTION YOUR SANITY
BECAUSE SAMUS IS GENETICALLY-ENGINEERED, POWER-ARMORED AMAZON, AND AKARI IS SCRAWNY AND NOT CAPABLE OF RUNNING FASTER THAN SOUND
>>
>>35910180
Nope, those are all various /m/-related references, not Metroid, though I suppose Samus could be considered /m/-ish material on the low end of the scale. Feel free to continue questioning my sanity though, given that Shine Spark and J-Phoenix are both extremely impractical kamikaze attacks that I just happen to find awesome.

Do you even GaoGaiGar?
Or Getter Robo?
Or Mazinger?

Unless I miss my mark, I don't believe anyone has referenced Mazinger yet. And no, I don't think Boss into /m/ for the most part.
>>
>>35910233
I forgot if the Stoner Sunshine and the Shine Spark were from Mazinger or from Getter.
All these finishers start getting confusing after a while okay

though

I still don't

>>
>>35910304
Eh, it's cool, most people don't even recognize the classics at all these days so I'll give you a pass. I think would be pretty hilarious if Akari turned into a one-girl SRW cast, though how one could execute the Final Dynamic Special all on one's lonesome is completely beyond me.
>>
>>35910348
You know, it's right there in the listing if you want to check it out. Just a few spaces over from /tg/... you know you want to...
>>
>>35910233
>>35910348
Isn't Godzilla /m/-related?
And I doubt there is anyone in the western hemisphere who hasn't watched Power Rangers, and that IS /m/-related, mostly because they also discuss Tokusatsu (and Digimon) along with Mecha.

Furthermore, EsperQM linked the Shining Finger theme earlier, and there is nothing more /m/ than Gundam.
That means he Did know /m/ was a thing, and therefore he was messing with us.
Well played, Boss. Now, about that Stoner Sunshine...
>>
>>35910425
>recognize that a reference that's repeatedly made is from gundam
>look up the song that plays when the thing is used

I literally just now went to /m/ for the first time
>>
>>35910425
He linked the Burning Gundam theme, and I suspect that my own insistence is at least half responsible for that (hell, I even included the English translation of the song's title in one of my posts). Fair point about the rest of that though.
>>
>>35910425
>nothing more /m/ than Gundam
I would debate that, mostly in favor of the old bastards from Dynamic Productions, but it's getting rather late for such things. Good talk fellow /m/an!
