Ranthix’s question reminds you that everything that happened… happened. The memory of mixed flavors of blood delights your senses for a split second, but the memory of almost being shot or having your face caved in mingles with it, giving you a weird, lightheaded feeling. It’s almost like you’re in a dream.

The ultra-violent, way hardcore dream of the drummer for a death metal band. Or a homless dude on LSD. Or a homeless drummer on LSD.

You don’t know how a regular person should feel coming out of what you’ve just come out of, but suddenly it doesn’t seem to matter at all. You answer Ranthix’s question with a fit of uncontrollable laughter.

“AH YES,” Ranthix observes loudly, “THE RUSH OF TEARING APART EVERYTHING THAT STANDS IN YOUR WAY. THIS IS A FEELING YOU MUST BECOME ACCUSTOMED TO AS A RISING IMPERIATE.”

You manage to get yourself under control, but a smile still stretches your face to the breaking point. “What, the feeling of like, way wild rides?” you ask.

Reeber pushes his huge head out from the back and into your lap. He licks the blood off your claws, and you let him. He’s pretty much the best dog you could ever imagine.
>>
>>35898682

“TO BE THE IMPERIATE IS TO BE THE WAY WILD RIDE, SPAWNLING,” says Ranthix. He squints ahead at a street light, flashing red. He ignores the obstacle and drives through. It’s well past midnight, and there’s basically no cars anywhere, so you don’t complain. “SO. TELL ME OF YOUR TRIUMPHS.”

Happily, you proceed to do just that. How you slit throats and scared the crap out of that weirdo headless scumborn dude, and how you fought that one Nyphican guy and electrocuted him to death. You make sure to leave out how Iptaph almost got the better of you with his freakish quickness and strength, and generally omit the details of how you accidentally got mixed up in the heat of the moment and pounced on Iptaph’s bodyguard thinking he was your man.

Ranthix listens with rapt attention, thundering with laughter at the appropriate and inappropriate points, and making off-color remarks.

“But yeah, I guess I could have done better maybe,” You say. “They kind of saw me when I didn’t want them to see me.”

Ranthix screws up his face as if in deep contemplation. “YOU ARE YET YOUNG AND FULL OF STUPIDITY AND GENERAL SILLINESS. IT IS BETTER TO EXPEL THESE DOING THE COURT RAT’S RAG WASHING THAN TO KEEP THEM TO YOURSELF FOR LATER, WHEN EVERYTHING YOU ARE AND EVERYTHING THAT YOU DO IS FULL OF DEEP SIGNIFICANCES.”
>>
>>35898697

You try to wade through whatever it is he just said. You’ll have to think about it later. “Right,” you agree.

But Ranthix can tell you’re somewhat confused. “DON’T AGREE TO THINGS YOU DON’T UNDERSTAND!” he yells.

“Oh uh. Right.”

Ranthix grunts dismissively. “BAH. SOMETIMES, SPAWNLING,” he says forebodingly. “SOMETIMES.”

You open your eyes. Why did you open your eyes? You’re tired. You roll over to go back to sleep.

Then the knocking repeats, accompanied by a voice. “Sierra,” comes Cassandra’s voice, “get up or you’re going to be late to school.”

Geeze. It must already be tomorrow. Actually, that would make it today – but from yesterday’s frame of reference, it’s tomorrow.

You will yourself to consciousness. You don’t do a very good job of it. To help yourself figure things out, you roll out of bed with all your blankets and onto the floor, as you are wont to do. Except your landing isn’t greeted by plush carpet alone. You fall onto Zelathis, your MP5, and your tactical vest strapped with grenades, which you left on the floor in your haste to be asleep after getting home last night.

You probably need to put those away up at some point. You groan inarticulately in protest, and also out of a desire to go back to sleep right where you are, with a sub-machinegun jutting into your ribs.

“Is anyone alive in there?” Cassandra asks.

“Isn’t it Saturday?” you mutter loud enough for Cass to hear.

“That’s tomorrow,” she corrects you.

You make a dissatisfied sound, and resolve to get up. “Go away,” you say, wishing to be left to yourself.

Cassandra almost does as you ask, but lingers outside your room for one moment more. “I’m giving you and Ro a ride to school today,” she says.

“Away!” you repeat.

She leaves you to your morning routine. You find you’ve healed pretty well from last night, although you still do have a black-eye from where Iptaph punched you in the face.

That’s not the only new thing, though.

HP: 29/29
PP: 33/33

Your rampage last night knocked loose a few things within of you.

>Whisper of Lightlessness: The shadows can speak. They’ve spoken all along, but now you’ve finally learned to listen.
>Form of the Unseen: You are not strictly bound to spatial reasoning, provided nothing proves that you aren’t. (When unobserved, double movement. Very light PP cost)

Choose two of the following.

-Infernus-
Bloodletting
>You reflexively know where to hit to cause the most bleeding possible. (Melee attacks cause damage over time at a rate of 1d3 per round on top of any other wounds or status effects inflicted, if left untreated.)
Blood Curse
>You cause the blood of your target to become unstable, greatly weakening it. (Target takes increased damage and suffers great penalties to healing. Causes random bleeding, which allows for easy tracking. Persists for at least one day, if not removed.)
Infernal Frenzy
>When you’re close to losing control, power of terrible proportions floods your body, lending you incredible strength. (When Stress is greater than 70, your strength is doubled)
Hastened Regeneration
>Nothing can keep you down. You heal faster than ever before, though at significant cost. (Turn 4 PP into 1 HP per combat round)
>>
>>35900401

-Verwelken-
Voice of One Thousand Teeth
>You can push shadows farther than they like, and cause them to bristle. Turn a space of shadow into a cloud of cutting darkness. (4 PP, area effect, effective against unarmored targets)
Translucency
>You can allow light to pass through you for a short period of time, making you transparent. (1 PP/ sec when moving, 0.5 PP/second when still)
Displacement
>When no one’s looking at you, you can stop being where you are and be somewhere else instead – provided that it’s close by. You don’t necessarily know where you’ll show up ahead of time, though. (4 PP cost)
Ephemeral Eye
>You can quicken your reflexes beyond what they are already, going into a heightened state in which you can act faster than the speed of thought. (8 PP, give significant bonus to reflexes for a couple seconds)
>>
>>35900422

-Belphegoran-
Inflict Pain
>Ignite an opponent’s senses with a crippling overload of pain. (High cost, powerful debuff)
Spell Eater
>Parry incoming magic and absorb it, negating its effects and gaining a part of its energies. (Arcane defense, Cost: ~ varies on spell being countered)
Unnatural Charm
>Influence others’ perceptions of you, and gain some insight as to how to manipulate them into doing what you want. (Activated power, uses PP)
Corrupting Hex
>Destroy spells, buffs, or debuffs on target. (Moderate cost, utility spell)

Also, upgrade one of the following.

Claws -> Rending Claws
>Becomes 3d3+1 damage up from 3d2+1.
Venomous Fangs -> Paralytic Venom
>Add alternative, nonlethal venom.
Blood Taste -> Red Quickening
> While in battle, tasting fresh blood sends you into a frenzy, making you faster, stronger, and more violent than before. (Gain bonus to damage and physical checks for one round after imbibing blood)

[I forgot to finish the post, so I'll write that while you decide on things.]
>>
>>35900422
>Voice of One Thousand Teeth.
I'd vote for it twice if I could.
But because I can't.
>Spell Eater

Finally,
>Paralytic Venom
>>
>>35900450
Blood Curse
>You cause the blood of your target to become unstable, greatly weakening it. (Target takes increased damage and suffers great penalties to healing. Causes random bleeding, which allows for easy tracking. Persists for at least one day, if not removed.)

Because having something that can fuck with tough guys and regenerators, like Inferni, is something we need.

Inflict Pain
>Ignite an opponent’s senses with a crippling overload of pain. (High cost, powerful debuff)

Because I've wanted it for fucking forever, and it should let us punch above our weight class by giving us opportunities to land big hits on tough enemies, like Satt or Meckor.

Venomous Fangs -> Paralytic Venom
>Add alternative, nonlethal venom.

Because a nonlethal option is going to come in handy sooner or later.

This is nuts. It makes our claws deal 4d3+1 +Xd3 damage where X is the number of rounds they stay alive.

So, just making sure I understand Displacement.

It's a short range random teleport that only works if nobody can see us, and it's fairly cheap? Seems alright. Not sure if I want it now, but I guess it will probably lead to cooler shadow stuff.
>>
>>35900450
Displacement, inflict pain, paralytic venom
The reasoning here is displacement might lead to teleportation, inflict pain is well balanced and effective against armored foes, and paralytic venom is a utility choice, if displacements destination can be decided at higher levels, then doing that then using a bunch of debuffs and paralysing enimies while they are incapacitated, would work well.

For one, your skin’s taken on an even sicklier look than normal, and accordingly, the black, ossified flesh of your claws has crept a few inches further up your limbs. Although it’s a little inconvenient, it’s also kind of cool. What you’re not so sure about is your ears. They’ve taken on a jagged kind of quality – it’s not that long, elfish look. They’re just kind of more… jagged. Kind of like Ranthix’s ears.

The other probably more significant thing is that looking at yourself in the mirror doesn’t really read quite right. It’s like the bathroom lighting doesn’t really catch your full quality in it. It’s a very close approximation of you, but there’s something that the light can’t catch.

A weird shiver goes down your spine as you try to understand what you’re missing. There’s something unseen about you. Something unseeable. You smirk at your inadequate reflection. It’s not there. You get the feeling that it never will be. (-3 Sanity: 92/100)

You shake yourself from your strange thoughts, and finish getting ready for school, now having to cobble together new glamors for your altered appearance. You don’t have to work too hard, because nobody can see your ears anyway, and it’s just a matter of tweaking your old glamors to fit better.

A while later, Cass drops you and Rowan off at school. Ro’s wearing her striped hoodie and a pair of scuffed up jeans, and you’re trying out your new leather jacket that you bought a week or so back. So far, it’s pretty awesome.

“Have fun at school,” Cassandra calls out after you.

Rowan waves, and Cass drives off.

“So, what is it?” Rowan asks, peeking over at you.

“What?” you ask, not following.

“You look all broody. There’s totally something you’re not saying.”

You didn’t mention any of the new developments to anybody yet, although you don’t know if you’re really in the mood for it right now.

You shrug to yourself as you walk toward the school entrance. “You know how it goes,” you say. You turn your head to the side and lift up your hair for a second to let Rowan see your jagged ears. “Woke up this morning an elf, kind of.”

Rowan remains positive. “That’s nothing compared to… everything else,” she says, vaguely. Although you would guess she means your horns and all that junk.

“Yeah well, I don’t know,” you say. “If it was only that, fine. But I have this kind of weird bad feeling for some reason.”

Ro doesn’t make any judgments. “Is this about your super-secret mission for Waldric?”

“I don’t know. Maybe?” you say. “Probably not though. It’s whatever.”

“Huh,” she answers, her tone thoughtful. You can feel an inkling of concern coming from her, and you don’t like it. You decide to change the topic, and wind up throwing out the first thing that comes to mind - namely, Baron.

“So guess who got asked to the Winter Ball,” you say, assuming as cocky a tone as possible.

Ro blinks. “Vikrama?”

“No!” you say angrily. “Me! I got asked!”

“Oh. So Baron then?” Rowan says, smiling. “He’s got a huge crush on you.”

That’s not news you expected to hear. “What, I miss a Facebook post or something?” you ask. You’re not good with social media, but it’s important to never rule it out.

“Yes. You missed a Facebook post,” Rowan says.

You ignore Ro’s sarcasm. “When did you find this thing out?” you ask. “And if it wasn’t just two seconds ago – I mean, this is the kind of news you don’t keep back.”

“Actually it kind of is,” says Rowan. “Vikrama wormed it out of Baron in confidence, which she then told me in confidence.”

“And since I’m involved, what, I don’t get any confidence?” you say, feeling put out.

Rowan chuckles. “Baron’s a good friend. I don’t want to trip him up any more than he does himself,” she says.

You try not to be too frustrated. “Well, how long has this secret been secret?”

“That’s not important,” Rowan says, evasively. “Anyway. I’m just telling you so you know. Because I think you’d want to know, and it’s probably better for Baron and you if you knew the secret too – so long as he doesn’t know that you know the secret.”

“Right, because it’s not like I can just divine people’s feelings about stuff anyway,” you say.

“Just because you know what other people are feeling doesn’t mean you understand why they’re feeling the way they’re feeling,” Rowan counters. “Anyway – I have to get to class. See you later.”
>>
>>35904193
“Yeah,” you say, heading off to your own class. You try to make sense of what’s going on with all this drama stuff, but you don’t even know if it qualifies as drama or not.

Classes go by in a blur of drawing and not paying attention, and before you know it’s lunch break. You don’t have much of an appetite, so you skip getting anything and make a beeline for the regular place for the regular deal.

Moriah’s already there, reading some hefty looking piece of literature. She’s wearing a fancy black blouse, and lacey glove-type things that you don’t really get. That’s Moriah for you, you guess. She lightens up at your appearance. “Hello,” she says.

“You’re here early,” you say, sitting down and throwing your backpack on the table. “What’s that you’re reading?”

Moriah sticks a marker in the book and sets it aside. “Dead Souls,” she says. “Borislav came over the other day to talk with father. He told me that this was the best book ever written.”

>Borislav will tell you a lot of things.
>Is it? The best book ever written, I mean?

“Does it live up to the hype?” you ask, leaning forward and resting your chin in your hands.

Moriah seems amused by the question. “It’s classic literature, and you can tell why when you’re reading.” she says. “Though I’m not finished yet, so I can’t give you anything more than a half-formed opinion. You’d probably be entertained once you got into it – it’s in the style of a comedy.”

“Comedy. I like comedy,” you observe.

“Everybody likes comedy,” Moriah says, steepling her fingertips in a way that reminds you about 200% of Mr. Crowther.

“Except your dad,” you say. “What were they yakking about anyway, Borya and him?”
>>
>>35905210

“Politics,” Moriah says in a dull tone. “I didn’t catch much of what they were saying though. They talk to one another in Aramaic, which isn’t my strong suit.”

You frown. “Moriah, how many languages do you speak?” you ask.

Moriah looks upwards in thought, briefly. “English and Drathinean. The other ones I’m only really comfortable reading. Conversation is an entirely different matter.”

By the way she says ‘other ones’, you’re pretty sure she knows more than a handful, and is just being modest or self-doubtful or something. This makes you feel less accomplished with your weak grasp of Russian and virtually non-existent understanding of Heltic.

Desiring to change the topic to something more in your element, you say, “Hey Mori. Guess what.”

Like a chump, Moriah replies. “What?”

Huh. You actually don’t know.

You pull back your hair to showcase your freaky ears. “I’m an elf,” you say.

Moriah gives your ear a blank look. “You’re part Infernus and part Belphegoran,” she says blandly. “What else changed?”

“I don’t know,” you say. “Just the usual. More claws and more being all fine and pale and whatnot. I’ll have to see what’s new later. I kind of got beat up a little bit last night, and my body was all like, nope, you’re going to never get beat up again, I guess.”

“That’s a good way to think about it,” Moriah observes. “Do you still have everything under wraps then?”

That strange sense of foreboding in your gut sticks with you, but you choose to ignore it. “More or less,” you say.

“So this getting beat up. The eye?” she asks, indicating your black eye.

“Yeah,” you say, gingerly rubbing the mark. “Some psycho Waldric wanted removed. It was kind of intense.”

“I don’t know why he couldn’t just have had Ranthix take care of it,” Moriah says, frowning slightly. “It seems irresponsible to me, relying on your heritage instead of using ready tools already proven.”

You want to argue with her, but you get the feeling that she’s right, which really makes it a lot harder. “Well, there’s a lot of reasons why I had to do it,” you answer, kind of lamely. You try to remember these reasons, but maybe not getting enough sleep is putting a dampener on your critical thinking abilities.
>>
>>35906736

Then you remember one and spit it out as fast as you can think it. “I mean, everybody’s afraid of Verwelkens, for one thing. So now people think Waldric has some scary shadow monster at his command. Good thing, right?”

Moriah seems somewhat dubious. “Maybe,” she says. “All these colonial demons are really too extreme in how they operate. It seems that all these interests in the barony would be better off if everyone sat down and negotiated terms of how to profit from trade.”

You snort. “Kind of hard to use your words when you’re not a woman who speaks like ten thousand languages,” you say.

“Not you,” she says. “Them. It’s not your fault the duchess of such and such a place and the king of whatever tiny kingdom refuse to write Waldric a letter to suffer mercantile allowances.”

“Actually,” you say, “I was just trying to segue into asking you if you wouldn’t mind teaching me a little Heltic sometime. I mean, I guess I kind of know it, I just forgot it.”

Moriah thinks about this. “I’m not sure,” she says. “I have a knowledge of Heltic, but it’s actually Ranthix’s native language. He seems like a better candidate.”

You make a sour face. “Ranthix isn’t really much of a language teacher,” you say. “He’s been trying to hammer some of it into my head for a while, but it’s kind of confusing.”

“Better to talk with a native speaker than take lessons with from a secondary source.”
>>
>>35906757
You’re about to object when Vikrama appears. “Hello hello, girls,” she says dramatically, sweeping in with a half-empty carton of chocolate milk in hand. “And of what manner of secondary sources are we speaking?”

“Language learning,” Moriah says. “Immersion is the fastest way to pick up a new tongue.”

“My cousin lived in France for a year on a study abroad plan,” Vikrama says, taking a sip of her drink. “She took scores of classes in French before, but she learned more in there than anything else.”

“That sounds like an experience,” Moriah observes. “I’ve always wanted to live abroad in Europe for a few years.”

Vikrama smiles. “Really? Anywhere specific?”

“Germany,” Moriah says. The certainty of her answer lets you know she’s already given this some thought.

You look suspiciously at her. “Do you know German?”

“Not enough to get by if I had to,” Moriah replies shiftily.
>>
>>35906776

Vikrama comes in on your side. “So you do know some German,” she says.

“A little,” Moriah replies.

“Say something,” you demand.

Moriah gives you flat look. “No.”

“Alas,” Vikrama laments. She switches gears abruptly. “So, I hear Sierra got asked to the dance,” she says to no one in particular.

Moriah looks questioningly at you.

You shrug grandiosely. “What can I say,” you tell your friends, “I’m super attractive. Like. Pretty much nobody can resist. Who could? I mean, I’d do me, if I got the chance.”

Moriah clears her throat, while Vikrama bursts into laughter.

You review what you just said. “So I said that,” you say, feeling kind of crowded out all the sudden, “but you know what I meant it.”

Your explanation does nothing to alleveiate the situation, but that’s when you recognize that maybe something’s not quite right. “Vik, how the hell did you know about that? It was literally yesterday, and I only told two people.”

“Rowan texted me,” says Vikrama. “You don’t live in a vacuum, darling.”

You slam a fist down on the table for dramatic flair. “Lies! Ro was complaining about forgetting to charge her phone this morning, she couldn’t possibly have texted you!”

Vikrama, however, has more clever ruses in the way of the truth. “A woman’s intuition is wiser than reason,” she explains.

Moriah looks between you and Vikrama. “That wouldn’t hold up in a court of law,” she says. And if anyone has the authority to make such a claim, it would have to be Moriah.

“Just one minute,” you say, beginning to see through Vikrama’s smoke and mirrors. There is the possibility that Baron told his friends, and maybe one of them told Vikrama , but you don’t feel that it’d play out like that. No, Vikrama’s knowing look means something else.
>>
>>35910493

But before you can find out what that something else is, Baron, Ro, and Nathan all roll up, being all fashionably late and stuff. The entire thread of conversation is demolished at their appearance, morphing into something else entirely.

You forget your train of thought by the time the bell rings, summoning you to important stuff like pre-calculus. The rest of school breezes by, and before you know it, you’re out front on a bench waiting for evac from Cassandra. Or maybe Isaac. You don’t know who’s picking you and Rowan up, but it’s definitely somebody.

You’re sitting with Rowan, shooting the breeze as usual about topics of import, like which faction you’d be if you were in the world of Divergent. “I mean, Dauntless seems cool, but really, they’re the worst – all those obligations,” you tell Rowan. “It’s all about Amity. You just get to chill in a hippy commune all day and eat strawberries.”

“That’d get boring before long,” Ro argues. “At least in Erudite you get to better yourself and you know, actually do useful things that make a difference.”

You scoff. “Like taking over the whole dystopian society and being huge jerks to everybody about it,” you say.

“Exactly,” Rowan continues, switching her tactics. “Once they take over, you’d better hope you’re with them, because otherwise you get executed and stuff.”
>>
>>35910503

You spot Nathan and Baron walking your way, with some other guy you don’t know. They all look like pals though, from their general demeanor. Baron spots you and Rowan on your bench, and redirects the posse to your position.

“Hello,” Rowan says, looking up at the approaching group.

“Ladies,” says Nathan, in a groan-inducingly low voice.

Baron steps forward. “Hey guys,” he says, smiling. “I was talking with these guys just a few minutes ago, and we decided to get a bunch of people together and go on a big bike ride tomorrow.”

“How many people do you have so far?” Ro asks.

“Eight people are going to come,” says the unknown guy. “That’s including us.”

“But ten if you include you,” Nathan chips in.

Baron continues the explanation. “And if you assume a fifty percent attrition rate, that means five lucky winners will make it all the way to meeting up tomorrow and living the dream. Imagine – riding along the coast, people watching at ten miles an hour, with nothing but the fresh sea air and a twenty-five percent chance of rain to stop you."
>>
>>35910527

“So basically,” says Nate, “join us in the journey.”

Ro seems to consider the offer. “Where’s this happening?” she asks.

“Golden Gate Park at eleven o’clock sharp,” says unknown person, who is presumably an acquaintance of Baron's. “We’re meeting up by the place with the weird gazebo thing.”

“So,” Baron says, trying to gauge your and Rowan’s reactions, “if you’re looking to fill the eleven o’clock shaped hole in your schedule this Saturday – that is, tomorrow – here’s the greatest opportunity this side of the bay to do just that.”

Well that’s something.

Rowan turns to you with a conspiratorial gleam in her eye. “What do you think?” she asks.

>That’s quite the coincidence, because I was actually just asking around for stuff to do at eleven o’clock tomorrow.
>Sounds like a fun thing for fun people to do. If I wake up soon enough, I might just come along.
>The weather’s a little too cold and drizzly for me. I wouldn’t survive the ride. You guys’ll have to do good things without me.
