You’re eating breakfast alone yet again. It’s been three days since that misfortunate incident in the miasma cloud. Sarah has yet to speak to anyone since arriving that night. She pours all of her free time into training rigorously, only stopping when she barely has the strength to stand. Glen and Jin have yet to return from their mission and you have no doubt that’s affecting Sarah’s mood as well. You want to make sure that Sarah’s doing alright, but you haven’t had the chance yet.

The captain has been extremely busy since your return. He’s only seen in the guild building in the morning to check in on things.

“It’s terribly quiet isn’t it?” Valerie says as she collects your finished plates.

“Yes, it is.” It has been quiet around the building since your return. Normally the place would be filled with familiar voices. Glen and Jin getting into a heated argument and almost coming to blows. Jin being harangued by Valerie for being too frank. Sarah’s deep laughter at one of Glen’s jokes. The building is dead.

“It’s like this when all of you are assigned on missions.” Valerie takes a long look around the building. “Empty.” She adds and takes your plates back to the kitchen.

Her words leave you with a heavy feeling in your chest. “Empty…” you repeat to the room and hear a slight echo.

Valerie returns. “A man came by this morning. He said that he wanted to meet with you at the guard building. A dreadfully depressed looking man, said his name was Vincent. He said he’d understand if you didn’t want to meet with him, but don’t expect him to stick around the village for much longer” She finishes

You ponder for a moment and then you know what you’re going to do

You decide you should deal Vincent since he was the one most affected by that mission. You bid your farewell to Valerie.

“Come back safely.” Her voice echoes slightly in the empty building.

The guard building is situated near the village’s main entrance. The overcast in the sky makes your walk there a chilly one. Your walk gives you time to think.

Your report to the village was a shock. They tried to keep the information tight under wraps but the increased guard presence has made people ask questions and the events of what happened on your mission was soon known to most of the villagers.

You pass by a lizardman peddler. He’s likely leaving the village due to increasing hostilities to non-human races.

“S’Bon” The name flashes to your mind. You wonder briefly if he may have been attacked by the undine as well.

>>35918247

You arrive at the guard building. Two large guards are standing in front of the entrance.

“State your business.” One starts.

“I’m here to meet Vincent. He said that he wanted to speak with me.” You say as they eye your armor.

“Meet with Vincent? You’re the merc that got Rena killed aren’t you?” The guard on the left starts. “You’ve got a lot of guts showing your face around here. There’s a lot of guards looking to find the people to blame and teach them a lesson.” His hand reaches for his sword.

“Enough.” The guard on the right interjects. “Rena was a guard, a damn good one at that too. She knew the risks, as do we all. Starting a lynch mob will just get more of us killed, you idiot.”
The guard on the left lowers his hand and hunches over.

“Get in there and make your business quick. Seeing you will just bring up a lot of sadness for those inside.” The guard on the right opens the door for you. You pass through.

>>
>>35918265

You walk inside and you don’t see a pleasant sight. A poorly lit hall with lanterns that need replacing, dingy worn down benches holding bandaged guards that stare as you walk past. Finally you find Vincent slouched over on a corner table.

You sit across from him.

“Welcome to the wonderful guard building of Tarin, we hope you enjoy your stay.” He mumbles as he gestures a hand in a sweeping motion.

“What did you want?” you reply. He stops his hand and he looks up.

“I wanted to save up money for a few years and then propose to Rena. That’s what I wanted!” He stares at you in the eyes. “I called you here to give my thanks for saving my life, I can’t leave the village without doing that first. I already thanked the blonde one... she didn’t want to hear it.” He slumps his head again.

“Albert came back.” He says quietly. “He didn’t say a word to anyone. He just packed his things and left. Just like that.”

You remember thinking that Albert was dead for sure having run off into the core of miasma.

“I’m going to follow his example. I’m going to get a masonry job in Myndras, I heard it’s dangerous but it pays well.” He pauses. “I just need to survive the job for a few years, at least until Rena’s sisters are old enough to take care of themselves. They’re the only family I’ve ever known.”

He clenches his fists and rests his head in them. “Well, that’s it. You can leave now if you want or perhaps I could give you a tour of this place.” He laughs hollowly

“Join the Blue Dawn.” You say firmly.

“What? Don’t be ridiculous, I want to be able to go for at least a few more years before dying, thank you very much. The village may chip in a bit, but it’s up to me to take care of them now.” He waves you off. “Now, piss off.”

You stand. “It takes two weeks to get to Myndras. It would be days before you see any pay, assuming you got a job, and then it would take two weeks for your money to get back here.”

You pause to let the information sink into him.

“Just how are those girls going to get by in those weeks? You’d let them suffer just so you can escape the memories of your past? Pathetic.” You say the last two sentences loud enough for the whole hall to hear.

“They’ll be fine…” He mumbles

“Rena was brave enough to take on a guard position for her family. Just what do they mean to you?”

“Don’t you dare…” Vincent’s anger bubbling in his voice.

“You aren’t fit to take care of that family. Perhaps I should, that way you can just run off. Without Rena here I doubt they mean much to you.” You finish harshly.

“Don’t you fucking dare!” He stands and slaps you.

You stand there letting the pain subside in your cheek as the rest of the guards in the hall get up to see the commotion.

“Alright then. I’ll join if it means so much to you.” He storms off to the second floor, banging and stomping along the way.

“First time I’ve seen him do anything besides mope and cry since he got back.” An imposing grey-haired man says from the entrance.
[1/2]
>>
>>35919241

The guards that can stand at attention. The man marches towards you without breaking eye contact.

“I suppose I should thank you for lighting a fire under that sad sack.” He smiles and extends his hand “I also suppose I should apologize for him too. I am Guard Captain Cyril. If I heard correctly from Konrad, you must be Alena his newest recruit.”

You accept his hand, “That’s correct. I see that you know the captain.”

“I grew up with that tough bastard. I’m tougher though.” His laugh booms through the hall. He finally stops and pauses “Take care of that boy. His heart is in the right place, but his mind is a scramble right now. Rena meant a lot to us all, but to him, she was something special.”

“I’ll do my best.” You reply

You think for a moment. This man is in charge of the safety of all the village. If this man knows your captain well, he might be able to shed some light on his secret business. Perhaps it would be better to ask him something else, or perhaps it would be better just to take your leave back to the guild.

“Excuse me, guard captain, if I could have a moment of your time to discuss something in private.” You slide in before he turns to leave.

“Hmm? Oh, of course. I was headed to my office anyway. Please follow me.” He leads the way down the hall and into a small neatly kept office.

You take a seat across from him. The window to his right creates dark shadows on the left side of face.

“Not to be rude,” he starts “but you’re a bit shorter than the captain led me to believe you were.”

“Uhh…” You don’t even know where to begin with that slight insult.

He laughs. “Sorry I was just trying to lighten the mood a little. I’m sure you still a little heated from that chat you had with Vincent.” He readjusts his seat and leans forward. “So Alena, what did you want to discuss?”

You swallow your saliva “I’ve noticed as of late that my captain has been quite busy with something. He’s hardly around the guild building and he’s been seeming more stressed.” You press on “I just wanted to ask you if you knew something about his work. Perhaps I and my fellow mercenaries can help him if we just knew a bit more.”

Cyril remains silent for a moment.

“Your captain is no green soldier. He’s weathered storms before and will have to do so again so long as he is your captain.”

He looks to a window at his right.

"You shouldn’t worry too much about him. We leaders all have a weight to bear. There’s no sense in worrying people needlessly. I’m sure he appreciates your concern but unless you have a good reason I think it’d be better to leave it at that.

He knows what’s happening with the captain, or at least part of it. You want to get this information out of him, and you think you know just how to do it.

An immense amount of thoughts pass through on your head and you settle on one.

“You said that Rena meant a lot to you. Maybe…” You pause. “There was more to it than that. Perhaps on her mission she confided in me about certain sexual relationships she was being forced to have with a superior officer." Your words don't stop. "That would terrible if word got out of that, with how recent her death was. Perhaps a few words about my captain’s business dealings would give me something else to think about. If you understand me.”

The words flowed from your mouth before you digested their meaning.

The guard captain is speechless. He stands and looks at his hand and then at you.

He slaps your unbruised cheek, much harder than Vincent did.

“Get the hell out of my office! You’re lucky I don’t cut off your head. I thought you to be a decent person, now I see you for the snake you are! You’re trying to oust your captain aren’t you?”
“N-n-no I just wanted to know more about…” you stammer out. “I-I didn’t mean… you have to believe me!”

“Enough! Just leave.” He settles back into his chair.

You turn as quickly as you can. Your face burning with pain and embarrassment you run through the guard building and get out as fast you can
.
You don’t stop walking until you know you’re out of sight of the building. Your heart is pounding. You take a few breaths to steady yourself. You walk back to the guild building with the feeling that everyone that looks at you knows what you've done.

As soon as you arrive you clean your face. There is a small tender bruise on your left check and much larger spot on your right.

You sigh, desperate to forget the whole thing happened you

Rain begins to come down.

You’ve been meaning to have a talk with Sarah since you’ve returned from your mission but you could never find words that would seem proper. You look for her in the practice yard but she isn’t there. You return inside and go upstairs.

You go to Sarah’s door and knock. “Sarah? Can I come in?”

Silence.

“Unless you say something I’m coming in.” You slowly open Sarah’s door.

You see a rain soaked Sarah sitting on her bed wiping down her polearms.

“Hey Alena. I was just wiping the water off my gear. I don’t want it to rust.” She doesn’t look up at you.

“Oh. Can I help you?” you try to find a way to start a conversation.

“No, it’s fine. Glen always said that one should take proper care of one’s own things...” She stops wiping and stares down at her boots. She shaking maybe from the cold, maybe from something else.

You start "Well I just wanted to tal-"

You are cut off

“Enough.” You think. You walk to the spot where she’s staring and take a seat directly on top of it. You look up at her.

You notice she’s not just looking down. She’s staring only at her boots.

You force your way into making eye contact with her. “You think I made the wrong call, blocked the wrong spear, don’t you?”

It’s as if she finally sees you. “What are you saying?” She murmurs.

“That’s why you’ve been avoiding me. That’s why you’ve been doing nothing but training for these past few weeks.” You press on.

“That’s not true…” She says quietly

“Then why? Aren’t we friends? Just talk to me, please!” tears begin to form in your eyes.

She stares at you and finally cracks.

“It’s my fault.” She finally says “I was in charge of that mission. It’s my fault that it went as poorly as it did.”

“There was no body. I went back the first thing in the morning and there was no body there.” Sarah says softly “There was nothing there for Rena’s sisters to say good-bye to. I failed them, I failed you, Albert, Vincent, the captain, the guild.” She sighs “I failed Rena.”

She looks back at her boots “I just wish…” she stops and shakes her head.

She looks back at you. “I’ve been trying to tell myself that she was a soldier just like you or I and we can’t expect everyone we know to live forever… But I just can’t convince myself.” She pauses. “Maybe I’m not cut out to protect people after all.”

You slap her.

She recoils from the impact. Her blonde hair covering her face.

[1/2]
>>
>>35922113
You shout tears flowing from your eyes “If you aren’t good enough to protect people then no one is! You’ve protected so many people, you’ve protected me! You are a soldier, my comrade, so don’t you forget it or else, or else, I’ll slap you again!”

You begin to sob in her lap.

She laughs and sniffles. “Just who is supposed to be comforting who?” She says as she pats and rubs your head.

She lets you cry for a bit and sighs. “Well, that settles it doesn’t it? I can’t quit now.”

You calm yourself, yet again. “Y-yeah.” You reply.

“Hmm..This will be a good story to tell Glen.” She giggles.

“Don’t you dare.” You laugh with her.

You leave Sarah’s room and retire to your own. You lie on your bed, something juts into your side.

You pull out your father’s journal from under you. You never been able to read more than a few words before putting it away. Today has been an exceedingly long day.

You set the journal down on your desk, you need sleep. You go down for a quick bath and then straight back into bed. The warm furs comforting your weary body.

The rain continues to pour.

A thumping noise. You turn over in your sleep hoping that it will go away. It gets louder.

BANG, BANG, BANG

You jump up in your bed. You hear the banging noise coming from downstairs. You hurry to get your boots on and get your sword. You run downstairs.

You come down to see Valerie switching on lanterns. “What is going on out there?” She asks, concerned.

“Hurry and let us in!” You hear a familiar voice. It’s Jin.

Valerie rushes to unlock the door which quickly shoots open.

Sarah comes down the stairs.

You see Jin and another man carrying a body. His armor is soaked with blood and it’s dripping on the floor.

“No!” Sarah gasps.

“Help us!” Jin shouts while he and the other man carry Glen’s body to a table.
