You whistle as you read through books in the base’s archives. A few days have passed with relatively little to note. The Messengers themselves have been busying themselves with debating on what to do with the Shard, and in the meantime that meant having downtime. The Shard itself was locked away in safe security several levels down in a lead-lined vault ten inches thick. Nothing could get through there.

But that still meant having downtime. You hated downtime, at least downtime without Sumire. Sumire made things exciting in that she usually had some weird plan to have fun. You remember that one time you and she did that thing with the bed, the pillows, and the hot cooker. The Fire Department was not amused.

But still, you flip through the pages, with only the light of a desk lamp giving you illumination in the dark archives. What you were looking for was more information on the Messengers. They’re a mysterious bunch they are, and they claim to not know their own history beyond that they were running from something in some different dimension. You’re taking that with a grain of salt honestly.

And now look where you are, you’re going to go nuts.

Kirby slides up your shoulder, chilling your skin down to the bone. You shiver as he materializes back into the form of a cat. “I see you are busy.”

> “We humans have this thing called ‘don’t bother me if we look busy’, Kirby.”
> “What do you want?”
> “If this is another request for anti-magic resistance, forget it.”

“We have this thing called ‘don’t bother me if we look busy’, Kirby. It’s a human thing.” Kirby tilts his head, unsure. You sigh, he’s not getting it. “What do you want, Kirby?”

Kirby hops down onto the desk, his tail wagging like smoke from a fire. “Bomber and Tiger told me to invite you to their swimming competition they are holding at the Base’s Underwater Survival Area. They tell me you would probably just beat them both which would render the competition relatively moot.”

You shrug. “I suppose. Then again, Tiger swims like colored folk and Bomber doesn’t swim at all.”

Kirby looks down at your book. “Attempting to study our history?”

You nod, placing your hand on the page. “Yeah, I noticed something.” You turn the page. “Completely blank.” You turn the page again. “Blank.” Turn another page, and so on and so forth. “Blank, blank, so blank that it’s like looking into the mind of Herbert Hoover. You really just keep blank books of your history lying around?”

“We hope that we will recall what our people were once like,” he says. “Are you worried about something?”

You grunt, shutting the book and sliding it out of the way. You fold your arms and lean on the desk, looking him in the eyes. “Kirby, I’m worried about how we Magical Girls fit into things now. I mean, two decades ago, people didn’t know what Magical Girls were, they were just myths. Now we run around like superheroes, secret agents, all that stuff. You ever think the world is going to move too fast?”

“The world is-“ Hold on.

[1/2]
>>
>>35918681
[2/2]

You cut him off. “It’s a metaphor. I mean, you ever think the world is going to outpace us? One day, they won’t ever need Magical Girls. We’ll just be relics, or heroes in some stories, or even villains if Engelhardt gets her way.” You look down, mulling over it. “It just feels wrong.”

Kirby says, “We can assure you that Magical Girls will always be needed, but that does not mean you will be a Magical Girl forever.” You look up at him, surprised. “We Messengers rarely, if ever, forcibly strip a Magical Girl of her powers, because we know that one day they will give it up voluntarily. When they want to start a family, or perhaps retire to a quiet life, we will not stop them. In short, Liberty, yes you will grow up.” That hits you, hard. “But you must learn to accept that.”

“Hmph.” You lean back, placing your hands over your lap and thinking more on it. You’d hate being an adult. You are one now, and you hate it.

Kirby tilts his head. “Do you wish for advice?”

“What do you got to say, Kirby?”

He cocks his head, then sits upon the desk. “The name of Liberty has been passed on for many generations among human beings. Some were like you, some were much different personality-wise. I knew all of them personally. One that was particularly memorable to me was a Native American girl of the Lakota Tribe. When the Americans came to take her home and send her to a school to be reformed and be integrated into civilized society, she implored me to help her, to help her fight back the Americans and free the Lakota.”

You nod. “What did you do?”

“I refused her request.” You blink. What? “She was distraught, and hated me for some time because I would not assist her.”

“Why didn’t you?”

Kirby lies down on the desk, his head on his paws. “Because she was old, around the age of twenty-two to be precise. She would not give up her powers willingly, and I would not risk my life to strip her of her powers. So this became the ultimatum that eventually saw her give up her powers in protest.”

You nod at that, frowning. “You could’ve helped the Lakota, you could’ve changed history altogether. It would’ve been big for Indians and Whites to get along.”

“It would not have ended that way,” he says. “But this is becoming irrelevant. Let me make my point clear. There will be a time when you realize that not even your powers will help you. The only thing that can is yourself. Pure unbridled human nature will save you, not magical powers nor the aide of the Messengers. You will know when it comes.” Kirby steps off the desk and lands on the floor with nary a sound. “Anyway, I must return to my duties.”

You nod, pensive. “Alright, Kirby.” He melts into the floor, and then slinks away at the speed of sound with no sound at all. You return to the book, sighing.

Human nature. Hm.

> Go see what Rana and Anneliese are up to.

The Underwater Survival Facility basically functions less as a training facility for the various Magical Girls of Operator #5’s division and more functions as a swimming pool. Thusly, most girls tend to bring their best and most luxurious swimsuits to swim in the warm deep waters. Olympic sized with a deep end and a shallow end, and with bleachers around it to sit around.

You meet up with Rana and Anneliese, hanging off the edge of the pool in the water, in simple uniform black one-pieces. They look up at you as you stand over them. “Hey there,” you say. “Working hard you two?”

Anneliese huffs, turning her nose up high. “By the end of the day, we will be better swimmers than you, Christine!”

Rana shrugs. “Did you want to join us? The water’s fine!”

> Sure, let me get my swimsuit.

You snap the straps holding up your swimsuit taut. Everything is tight and good to go. Your swimsuit is basically much like a small dress, except the skirt pretty much ends right above your thighs, if it ever started. It’s dark blue, like the field for the stars on the American flag, and on the front is a white star over your chest.

Rana narrows her eyes. “Did you have that custom made?”

You whistle innocently, dipping yourself into the water. “Nooooo…” You should probably hide that receipt, especially since you had one custom made for Sumire too. You wonder if she still has it. “Anyway… how are you guys doing in terms of swimming? You learn how to tread water?”

Rana and Anneliese nod. “Oh, definitely, yes.”

You nod, looking down. You are the deep end. “Okay, let go of the end then.” They glance at each other, then smile nervously. “Come on, you said you know how to tread water, just show me.”

Anneliese huffs. “Fine, I will show you!” She lets go of the edge of the pool, then immediately sinks.

You sigh. Jeez.

You three stand in the shallow end. More specifically, you’re holding Rana’s hips as she dogpaddles and flails her arms wildly as you hold her in place. “Rana, you need to get a rhythm for it. And stop holding your breath.”

She pulls her head up from the water, taking a wild exhale. “Ugh! This swimming thing is hard!”

Anneliese stands by the side, arms crossed. “Christine, perhaps you will tell me why you are holding her like that?”

“It’s to make sure she doesn’t sink,” you say. “You and Rana are like sharks at the moment, since you don’t know how to tread water, you have to keep swimming or else you sink.” You let go of Rana, and all her propulsion fails her as she sinks to the bottom. “Like that.” You quickly grab her the shoulder strap and pull her up. She coughs, wheezing and spitting out water.

“Hm, interesting,” says Anneliese. “Perhaps I won’t accompany you on a mission if there is water involved.” You roll your eyes at that.

“Miss Hunter.” You look over to see runner, with a telephone on a plate. You quickly stride through the water over to him. “Phone call from Miss Sumire Kawanishi.”

You pick up the phone eagerly, saluting the attendant as he waits by the bleachers. “Sumire, what’s up?”

“Hellooo Lady Liberty!” says Sumire. “I’m calling you from the lovely land of Sicily. We’re just working out some weird stuff about bodyguarding and what not. Magisch Korps are in the area, but Jeanine’s being cautious considering what happened last time she tried to take them on. Nothing big. What about you?” She pauses a bit. “Do I hear water?”

“Oh, yeah…” You twirl your finger through the phone cord, whistling a bit. “Well, see, me, Rana, and Anneliese are just swimming. I actually gotta teach them about you know?”

“Hmhmhm…” She giggles a bit. “So what are you wearing?”

“My swimsuit,” you say.

“Come on, give me the juicy details! Does it show off your legs, your butt, your boobs?”

You look over to Anneliese relatively flattering black one-piece. “Hm… black.”

Sumire giggles. “Oooh, sexy!”

“Yeah, cups the tits pretty good. Hugs the hips too, I know you have a hankering for hips, Sumire.” You scratch your chin. “A bit tight around the ass though.”

“Wait. You’re talking about the kraut, aren’t you?” Huh? How’d she figure that? “Don’t lie to me, whenever you bring up asses, we always end up going to Anneliese about this.” Oh yeah, that’s how. “Come on, I’m dying here, are you at least wearing something cute?”

“You remember the swimsuits I custom ordered?”

“Oh, the lame Stars and Stripes ones?” You roll your eyes. “Don’t roll your eyes at me, I know you’re doing it! Still, I do have mine, I just kinda wish it left something to the imagination. I know I wanted something that wasn’t American conservative but hey, this is a little much.”

“It’s not that skimpy,” you say. “You got your belly and your back in the air and you got your little buttocks out for the world to see. All is well!”

You lean on the edge of the pool. “We’re doing pretty good. The bigwig and Knifey von Molester are behind bars here in the base. Knives herself is probably having a conniption since she knows that Rana and Anneliese are here, she has to assume I’m here too. Otherwise, with the Shard secure, things have been quiet.”

“Too quiet?”

“A bit. I’m worried, honestly.”

“Awww… do you want me to hug you and tell you it’ll be okay?” You roll your eyes. “I know you’re rolling your eyes, darn it. Tell you what, maybe we should make a beach date when I’m available, I’ll wear the stripes just for you.”

“I’d rather see you here now wearing that skimpy swimsuit with pride.”

“You just said it wasn’t skimpy!”

“I lied.” You laugh at Sumire’s expense as she groans in frustration and embarrassment. “Hehehe! But, seriously, I do wish you’d come back around, Sumire.”

“I will, eventually. Anyway, I’ll talk to you later, Jeanine’s got my number. See you.” The phone clicks before you can say goodbye. Ugh… You hang up, and the attendant quickly picks up the phone and leaves.

You look back to see Rana and Anneliese, holding onto a stray lifejacket as they float in the shallow end. You roll your eyes.

You hold Anneliese by the waist as she kicks and throws her arms forward. “Come on, Anneliese. You can do it!” You try to encourage her onwards, but so far you’re not being encouraged at all. Rana herself is simply lying forward on an inflatable bed while you train her. “Come on, kick harder!”

Anneliese pulls her face up, breathing heavily. “I am trying!”

Thusly, you let go. She actually moves forward a few feet before tiring herself out and eventually sinking. You sigh, this is not working at all.

Rana says, “You know, no offense, Chris. But maybe we’d do better with an actual swim teacher.”

You nod, holding your hips. “No, no. You’re right, Rana. But do you see any good teachers around here who happen to have the free time to teach you both how to swim?” Rana points over to Henrietta, who is busy lounging on a lawnchair, sipping out of a tall glass with sunglasses over her eyes. “Besides her.”

Rana shrugs. “Eh, I guess.”

Anneliese jumps up from the water, taking a huge breath. “Agh! This swimming business is terrible! I give up!” She starts stomping through the water, having to get her legs up as high as possible to facilitate that.

Anneliese, come on! Don’t give up!” You grab her by the back of her swimsuit and pull her back. She whines, trying to kick and flail as you hold her. “Come on, we’re going to work until we get this right!” She squeals, huffing and folding her arms as you carry her back further into the shallow end. “Now come on, at least try to float.”

Anneliese groans you let her go. She lifts her legs up, then immediately sinks. Amazingly however, she floats upwards, face up. “There!” you say. “Easy!”

A bit of water drips into Anneliese’s nose. She wheezes, hacking and coughing before sinking again.

You’re going to be here a while.

-

-

It was another hour before you finally managed to teach them how to swim properly. The three of you sit in the bleachers, tired, soaked, and pruning. Your hair feels stiff as hair polish in hair (that was not fun explaining to your Dad how it got in there). Anneliese and Rana themselves are starting to nod off, leaning on each other.

Henrietta comes over, sitting down next to you. “Helloo, Chrissy.”

“Yo.” You look her up and down. “Why just the towel?”

She sighs, smiling. She is wearing nothing but a towel. “I just got out of the shower. Decided to lounge around a bit. It’s not like there are any boys to perv on us, ya?” You shrug at that. “Ooh jeez.” She tugs on her towel a bit, seeing it slip downward a bit. “Something worrying ya?”

You blink. “How could you tell?”

“That’s the thing about me.” She flicks her a wrist, and out comes a yo-yo in a sleeper. “I read people like picture books, ya? Come on, you can tell me.”

“Worry, eh?” She purses her lips, nodding. “Oooh, ya, I can relate. This downtime we have been having sure has been quite nerve-wreck. And I’m like ‘jeez’, we haven’t been doing much lately, dontcha know. Ya?”

You shrug. “I suppose. And, to be blunt I do miss Sumire a bit, but honestly what’s getting me more is the fact that I just don’t feel secure now. I feel like something big is going to happen.”

Henrietta smiles. “Oooh, something big is gonna happen, just don’t concern yourself, ya?” You sigh. “Listen, Chrissy. Here’s what I do to cope with the darn downtime, ya? You go home, drink yourself some nice cup a coffee, ya? Then relax to some nice music on your bed, maybe cuddle with a nice boy or girl you really like, ya. Ya?”

“Yeah…” You sigh. “Too bad I don’t have anyone to cuddle with.” You look over at Anneliese and Rana, who have fallen asleep completely. “At least no one right now.”

Henrietta scoots up next to you, smiling and rubbing up against you. “Come on, you can cuddle with me, ya! Let’s cuddle!” You smile, pushing her away playfully. The two of you giggle quietly, careful not wake Anneliese and Rana. “Oooh, anyway, I should go get changed, ya.” She stands up. “See ya round, Chrissy.”

You slip back in the pool, tugging on your wet and slippery swimsuit a bit, finding it clinging to your skin like mist now. You lean on the edge, sighing as you stare up at the ceiling, feeling your legs float in the water idly.

This isn’t working. It’s time to get some laps done. You push off the edge and start swimming.

Okay, time for breast stroke! You’ve already done about twenty laps, what’s another twenty to you?

You pant, keeping on by holding onto the edge as you continue to swim. Okay, fourty laps was not a good idea. If Sumire were here she probably would’ve stopped you by the tenth at least. Oh well. Maybe you can get through this with another lap.

Rana and Anneliese look down at you. “Christine?” You look up at them, tiredly. “We were going to change then head to dinner. Did you want to come?”

You climb out, having them both help you up. “Okay…” You stretch your tired arms and tired legs out, feeling every muscle in them burn and sting as you do. Seems like you really worked up a sweat. “Let’s hit those showers.”

-

-

You sit on the bench, peeling off your swimsuit. It seems like the skin underneath is bit paler than the skin that was exposed to the water. Now that’s something strange. You were probably just swimming too long. You quickly slip out of it and toss it down on the bench. Rana sits next to you, drying her hair. “So, Chris, did you hear?” You look at her. “Doc Savage is working on something called the Solar Collector!”

You nod. “Solar Collector?”

“Yeah, apparently it’s supposed to draw energy from the sun itself!” She points up to the lights as if they were the sun. “You know, like how the ancient Atlanteans did it!”

“Really,” you say. “That’s cool. That’s… Ancient Atlanteans?”

She nods. “Yeah, something the Atlanteans used to draw energy and power was solar radiation apparently. They were so good at it that twelve hours of sunlight could power a city for over a year. Ain’t that something?”

You nod. “Yeah, that is something.” Hm. That is something.

Rana smiles. “You’re not paying attention to me at all, are you?”

> “What did you say about sunlight?”

You smile at her. “What did you say about solar radio stations?” She rolls her eyes. “Come on, I’m interested!”

Rana sighs. “Fine. Basically, there are many forms of energy that can be converted into free usable energy like electricity. One of these forms of energy is solar radiation, which is the basically the sun’s rays hitting all over the Earth.” Your eyes silently start drifting over to Anneliese’s hindquarters as she dries herself with a towel. Very firm, very tight. “And basically that means that solar radiation is an untapped resource for free renewable energy. You got my meaning?”

You nod. “Yeah, sure.” You cross your arms, looking at Rana directly. She’s already got her blouse on and is buttoning up. “Um, Rana. You think that radiation is what powers the Astronomer?”

Rana shrugs. “I’d be surprised if it didn’t. Why do you ask?”

“Just speculating,” you say. Your eyes drift down to Rana’s breasts for a moment, and immediately you feel a pang of jealously. Oh, who are you kidding, this must be the reason Sumire hasn’t taken as great a shine to her as you have.

“Anyway,” says Rana as she pulls on her skirt. “That’s basically the gist of it.” Anneliese comes over, wearing her towel. “Hey, Anneliese, was just telling Chris about the wonders of Solar Radiation!”

Anneliese nods as she opens her locker then drops her towel. “Yes, I do not care.” Rana immediately deflates at that. Aw.

You cross your arms. “Now Anneliese, that’s not very nice. You should at least be more considerate to Rana. She’s been with you for all this time!”

Anneliese nods as she pulls her dress on, dusting it down. “I concede that, and I apologize if it came across as too forceful. But I am not a woman of the sciences and technology like she is. I am simply a Magical Girl, and a Magical Girl I will remain.”

You grunt, pulling on your shirt. “Anneliese, you’re not going to be a Magical Girl forever. That’s the truth of it,” you say.

“Hmph. That is a challenge I am willing to face.” She closes the locker shut. “Anyway, don’t you have that Jap to call to solicit sexual contact over the phone?” You throw a towel at her, throwing it over her face. “Point taken.” She pulls it off and starts leaving the locker room.

Rana giggles a bit. “Oh, that’s our little kraut.” She stands up, fully dressed. “Anyway, we’re going to grab some grub down at the Mess Hall, feel free to join us if you’d like.” She leaves you there in the lockerroom, by yourself to mull over things.

You sigh. You really do wish Sumire were here right now.

You munch on the carrot, the beans, the peas, the mashed potatoes, everything. Rana and Anneliese sit on either side of you, eating more sensible meals compared to your giant pile of food. You gotta eat to get huge after all.

Rana says, “You’re going to get fat.”

“Nope.” You swallow deeply, Dad never taught you to eat with a full mouth. “I am going to get strong. You gotta eat if you’re going to get stronger.”

Anneliese nods. “I agree.” She chews on a banana. “You must eat and eat healthy foods.”

“See, even Anneliese agrees with me,” you say. You pat Annelise on the back happily. “Anyway, I reckon you all need to eat as well. Who knows, we might get called on a mission.”

Rana sighs. “Chris, we’ve been over this. We’re on downtime. The Shard’s safe, Engelhardt and Knives are behind bars. Things couldn’t be better for now. We should try to relax while we can!” She leans on you, looking up at you with a mocking sadness. “Try to relax.”

All you’re doing is sitting there, chewing like a cow. Rana and Anneliese are not impressed.

“Anyway,” says Rana. “We just have to learn to enjoy the downtime when we can. Missions come, oh phooey then, but now, let’s just have fun with it while we can!”

You nod. “Alright, alright. Jeez.” Oh jeez, now you’re turning into Henrietta and her weirdo Minnesotan accent. “Listen, Rana, I-“

“Telephone!” You all look back at the hallway. “Telephone for Liberty!” An attendant calls you over. You stand up.

“Right, look at me relax now with this phone call,” you say. “Just you wait.” You walk away from the table, leaving a very unimpressed Rana and Anneliese behind. You take the receiver from the attendant, and he leaves without another word. “Liberty, how can I help you?”

“Magical Girl Liberty.” That voice… is that? “You probably don’t remember me much, oui? We’ve only encountered each other a few times. But I can see why the good Major has such a crush on you. Admittedly, you have shown yourself to be very alluring.”

You hear a muffled grunting and some struggling over the phone. Then Lightning’s voice comes over the phone. “Libby! It’s me! They got us! You-“ She’s immediately cut off, screaming into something.

“Right, that was just to let you know we’re serious,” says Leaper.

You growl at her. “You better let her go. You will be sorry you ever laid hands on her.”

“Relax, Lady Liberty. We will not harm a hair on the little yellow oriental. Here’s what we want. We want the Shard, we want Lady Engelhardt. I don’t care about the Major but I suppose you can throw her in while you’re at it. You will meet us at the following coordinates in two days, then we will exchange. Do you understand?”

“And if I refuse?”

“We kill her.” Oh jeez. They give you the coordinates, but you immediately recognize it because you’ve been there before. It’s at the McCormick Observatory down in Virginia. Your Father used to take you down there all the time. “We are not bluffing. If you do not give us what we want, we will kill her, then we will take what we want by force. This call is over.”

The phone line beeps dead.

Rana and Anneliese look over from the table, unaware of what just went on. “Who was that?”

You shrug. “I’m just going to make a call really quickly.” You quickly hit the hashtag and the five button. There is a specialized tone for it, a more droning noise. Finally, you’re through. “Operator #5? It’s me, Liberty. We just got a phonecall and-”

“I heard it.”

>> OPERATOR #5 <<
>> Head of the SSO Magical Girl Division <<

His smooth southern accent rings clear through the phone. “Now listen to me, Liberty and I want you to listen carefully. We will make the exchange.”

“What? But what about Engelhardt and the Shard? I don’t care about Knives or anything but…” Rana and Annelise walk up behind you, listening in. You glare at them briefly for eavesdropping, but go back to the phone. “We spent so long getting our hands on them, now we have them!”

“The Magisch Korps is still a threat regardless, and I believe we have a chance at ending their reign of terror now. I’ll call all available assets to assist you, but you will make that exchange, they will anticipate betrayal, and they will come in force. So be prepared. I will contact you soon.” The phone clicks.

Great, typical Operator #5 shenanigans.

“What’s going on?” asks Rana.

You pat Rana on the shoulder. “A whole lot. I’m gonna go for a bit. Operator #5 should contact you two.” You start walking on out of there. “And if you he says anything about Engelhardt, Knives, or that Indian girl down there, just go with the flow, okay? Okay.” You turn away and walk faster and faster.

They simply stand there, dumbfounded.
