"Masami! Look at this!" A familiar voice yells out to me.
The sun is shining, the flowers are blooming. And-

And I'm not sure where I am. Where am I?

"Masami! Look!" The voice yells back at me. With some focusing off into the distance, I can spot a lone figure wearing a bleached-white dress. She looks far younger than she normally does, but I can still tell that it's my mother.

I am Masami Itsukuma, and yesterday was a really difficult and convoluted day. Kaori told me that she wasn't human. She then started acting very distant and stubborn, refusing to cooperate or even admit that she still had friends. And..
And it really doesn't matter to me now. What matters now is that she's home, with me, and nothing is going to change that.
Speaking of which, I wonder where she is right now.

Mom runs up to me, her usually tall and serious demeanor has completely transformed into the body of a girl who looks to be only slightly older than I am. She giggles and skips as she runs. "Look! I haven't seen these since I've been little! I wish I could get some of them for my garden!"
"That's great, Mom. Where are we?"

She looks around the field of flowers that we find ourselves in. Yellow petals gently float through the air as they gently land on our white dresses.

"Don't know!" She says, giggling slightly.

The field seems to expand endlessly in all directions. Golden yellow flower blossoms bend and dance to the tune of an invisible wind that I can't feel on my skin.
With that wind, comes the soothing tone of the breeze gently raking the yellow blossoms. Loose petals leave their home to float away to another resting place.

Mom doesn't seem the least bit concerned that she's maybe 20 years younger. She continues to count and press the roots of a few upturned flowers as she gathers them into a big bundle.

That's when I hear footsteps slowly rustling through the field. There's someone else approaching us.
"Very pretty, isn't it?" Kaori says, she too is wearing a similar simple sundress that I find myself in.

>"Kaori, where are we?"

Kaori.
That's right, she's here with us now. I don't have to worry about chasing her or losing her any longer.

I'm so excited about it that I didn't even notice that I just bolted to my feet and tackled her into the bed of flowers.

"Oof, Masami. Please." She struggles to free herself from my grasp, but I'm not making it easy on her.
That's when Mom flops down on the other side of her, also gripping her into a hug.

"Y-you two, seriously, I thought you wanted to hear more about me.." Kaori still continues to squirm under our holds.
"Did you set up this dream, just for us?" Mom asks, tightening her grip around Kaori.
"I- I did, but, but you're not really taking this seriously."

"Sis," It feels weird calling her that, "Let's just enjoy this moment together. You can tell us everything you want in due time."

We lay in the field for what feels like forever. The bright orange sun basking our clothes in its glorious warmth. Off in the distance, I can faintly hear a buzzing sound.

--

beep, beep, beep, beep.
It's the alarm clock. It appears to be set to the time Mom is supposed to wake up to go to work.
I briefly wonder how Fortune is going to react to Mom hiding something from them. Do they even know that Kaori is staying at my house?

I look over next to me to see Mom tightly gripping Kaori, just like in my dream.

I reach over and deftly hit a small button on top of the clock. I really don't want it to ruin this precious moment that I have.

I do remember someone that should probably know if I'm not coming to school today.
Gently, I climb out of bed and tiptoe to my room. Picking up my phone-

..I have eight missed text messages?!

All of them are from various members of the student council. I suppose I may have forgot to tell them that I got Kaori back, which has seemed to have caused a panic. Aiko in particular sent four messages about how she was so worried and scared when she couldn't reach me last night.
Which is when I remember, I did fall asleep pretty early and left my phone in my room.
I should really get to texting everyone back and letting them know I'm alive.

I text pretty much everyone who is in the know about Kaori when suddenly, my phone starts ringing.
"Hel-"
"MASAMI OH MY GOD I WAS SO WORRIED!"
"A-aiko, I'm fine. I got Kaori home last night. We're fine."
"We were just so worried! Especially after the monster attack yesterday."

The- Wait what?
"Monster attack?" I say, with an uneasy voice.
"Yeah! When we were leaving school, there were like, three monsters scaring the kids out at the front."

"No one got hurt, right?"
"Well, I sprained my ankle, but other than that."
That's a relief, I guess.

"How is Kaori?" She says, still determined.
"She's fine, still being stubborn."
"Just.. Be careful Masami, you're not really sure you can trust her, you know."
"What makes you think that!?" I say, with an almost audible tone of annoyance.

"..Never mind Masami. Text me if anything happens, I'll talk to you later?"
"Tomorrow, please. Today is a family day."

We say our goodbyes as I hang up. I head back to Mom's room and lay back in bed. Kaori turns slightly as I do so. Slowly, I can feel myself drift away back to sleep.

That's strange, it feels like I hadn't left the field of flowers at all. I'm once again, right next to Kaori, hugging her tightly from one side as Mom hugs her from the other.

There is one key difference, Kaori seems to be eying my intently as I lean my head against her shoulder.
"Hey, Masami." She whispers, "Did I hear something about a 'Monster attack'?"
"Umm." I can feel the confusion dripping from my voice.

>"It's nothing, let's talk about something else!"

Start off by reassuring her that everyone is fine, then tell her about the attack.

>"I said we should enjoy this together."

If Kaori insists, tell her that nobody was badly hurt, it's all been handled, and it's not so urgent as to interrupt cuddles.

Remember to tell Mum about the attack later, though.

"Well, um."
What do I say, what do I say, what do I say?

I feel her arm wrapping around my neck.
"Please tell me, Masami."

"Yes, but.."
I can feel the excitement building in my throat.
"Well.. everyone is okay and it's fine andIreallylikehavingabigsister!"

Kaori, not really expecting my sudden outburst, struggles underneath me as I grab her again. I can hear Mom giggling as Kaori tries to squirm from my grasp.

"Ah, Wait, Masami. Mmph."

Mom finds this to be very funny to watch. Eventually Kaori manages to use her feet to pry herself out from under me.
"M-Masami.. Don't you want to know why I wanted everyone to be here?"
"Um.. Because this place feels good?" Really, I didn't know she had a purpose for bringing us here besides that.

"Well, that's true. I come here as a kind of safe place when I want to clear my mind. But.. I thought you both wanted to ask me questions."

I look over at Mom, she shrugs her shoulders.

"So, um. What did you mean earlier by 'Found you'?"
"Beg pardon?" She seems to have already forgotten that she said that.

"Earlier, you said that you were found. You weren't kidnapped, were you?"

I can see her putting on another pouty face.
"Yeah, but by you."
"T-that doesn't count!" I make a pouty face right back at her.

Mom doesn't seem to be laughing at this, she seems more curious now that I've finally mentioned something to her.
"You said you're Magician earlier, right?" Mom says, worry in her voice.
"Yes.. I thought father was the only one who could have made me, until I heard about Masami."

Mom gently wraps her arms around her, "I haven't heard about Magician in a very long time. I'm glad to know you're safe."
"..Why do you care?" Kaori says, a sort of dryness in her voice. "If you didn't make me, why do you care how I turned out?"

"..I suppose I should tell you both something. First, I need to tell Masami." Mom says, sitting across from both of us.

She has a very solemn look on her face, she sits cross-legged with an obvious frown.
"Masami, you're not a human."

..That's it?
"Mom, I already guessed that." Arms cross, Pout.
"Oh.. You did?"

She looks confused, then surprised, and then she starts.. laughing?
Kaori seems equally confused by her outburst.

"If I had known that you already knew, I wouldn't have panicked so much about telling you!" she scratches the back of her head and giggles to herself.
"Mom, please, how does this relate to Kaori?"

"Oh, right, right, Kaori. Well, Masami, you were born entirely from drafting. It took many months to do, and at one point, I had to give you a small part of myself in order for it to work." She seems almost nostalgic for her explanation.

"And.. I think Kaori is the same way."

"I don't get it, Mom, what makes us different from the monsters? Aren't they made by drafting, too?"
"No no, it's completely different. There's some other way they're made. I don't really know how it works in full because, well, it's not something I ever wanted to do. But it's done through manifesting things instead of making things."

She crawls over and hugs me, "But you were born from every bit of love and care that I could manage. Think of it like a little part of me is inside of you."

That's when I remember something, looking over to Kaori, I can tell she's kind of put off by Mom's explanation.
"Ah!! No wait! Kaori! What I mean is that you're made with love and care, too!"

"Save your breath." She says, sighing. "I already know that my father... doesn't seem to really love me."
"That can't be true!" Mom sounds determined in her words, "I'm sure he loves you, that's why he would have made you in the first place, right?"

Mom, that makes no sense.

Kaori sighs, "All I remember is waking up in Fortune and being taken to Father's home. Just like Masami was. I'm glad that you were able to have someone that you love, but some people just love differently. I think father is trying to show that he loves me, he just doesn't know how."

We'll show Kaori what it's like to be loved as a family, and we'll flaunt it so much that even "Father" will learn how.

Also possibly add something that at the end o the day it's about her own happiness not her fathers.. We're trying to make her happy. Not using her to make us happy.

"Well!" I stand to my feet. Taking Kaori with me as I leap up. "We're just going to have to show him, aren't we?"
"Uh, show him?"

I can't see it, but I can feel a beaming smile bright enough to light up the world shining across my face.
"Yep! Show him! We're going to be the best family anyone could ever ask for! Soon He's going to get jealous just thinking about the family he doesn't have!"

Kaori looks at me like I'm insane.
"I don't think that's going to work, Masami."
"It will work! It'll work and he'll start treating you with the love you deserve!"

"..If.. you say so I guess." She says, clearly unamused.

That's when Mom runs up and hugs the both of us. Squeezing us into a vice grip of affection.

"You two are just SO CUTE I couldn't ask for a better family!"
"Mom.. please.. can't... brea-"

She breaks away and allows us to breath again. That's when Kaori looks up to me to voice a concern.
"I think I should go to school today, I need to apologize to the student council."
"Hey! That's great! You can start going to school and-"

"WAIT!" Mom yells, "What time is it?"

Kaori's eyes lose focus for a second, as if she's staring off into deep space.
"7:20, why?"
"W-what? WHY DIDN'T MY ALARM GO OFF?"

"Oh, um, I may have-"
Mom interrupts me, "Can't talk, got to go, see you both later! Text me when it's lunchtime!"

With that, she disappears.

I don't see what the big deal is, we needed to have this talk, and it's not like Fortune is going to get any better.
