In the world of Valaer, the Battle of Tirinia changed everything. That was 680 years ago.

Here lies the human Kingdom of Therindel - less a Kingdom than a confederacy of lordships, duchies, principalities, city-states, et cetera - banded together under the constant threat of attack from the mysterious Wood Elves of the eastern land of Xalfacia. For many centuries, these lords and rulers have bickered amongst each other for the right to succeed the King who fell in battle at Tirinia against the Elves.

Until ten years ago however, when Lord Leandros Lysandros Layton Lamarr the Fiftieth declared his capital city open to all lords and masters for trade, commerce, and alliance. This city within this divided kingdom is the High City of Imperial City! This is the city of adventure, where Adventurers gather to duel, to brag of their accomplishments, and receive missions from the needy and the poor! This is the city where Heroes and Legends are made!

You are not one of those people.

You are Kasimir Kanenas. A few years ago you came to the High City of Imperial City for opportunity and work, only to find yourself in the deep straits of poverty. There is one good way of making money however, and that is exploiting the naivety of adventurers and their belief in the importance of all things. It’s a meagre living, but it’s a living for you, as a poor trader in these hard times.

>> ONE WEEK LATER <<

Steady…

Steady…

You drive the nail with the heel of your shoe. At least, you think you did. You pull your shoe back only to realize you just bent the head, rendering the nail as useless as a one-legged horse. Damn it. The City Guards Band rehearsing in the Market Square for the imminent arrival of a noble isn’t helping you any.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DU3wTF4Ib04

The past week has been spent improving upon the stall, seeing as how housing options were getting scarcer and scarcer as more Adventurers and more people came into the High City of Imperial City, whether for the Joust or for the winter, you didn’t care. That meant you had to room with Miss Eckhardt for the time being and that meant sharing a space barely two or three meters in size. You curse the dwarves for ruining it for everyone by exploiting the “no-taller-than-one-story” loophole. You could’ve dug yourself a fine hole.

Still, it’s quite cold anyway, a small stall that’s barely insulated against the cold is better than nothing. Your foot in particular is paying the price considering that you bought the lumber to strengthen the place and yet you neglected to buy a decent hammer.

Why? Because it was twenty silver. You’re not going to pay twenty silver for something you have right there on your foot. That’s more dirtier scat than an Elf trying to be honest and kind.

Snow is falling down on the morning in the Market Square. The weather predictors indicated that the High City may receive anywhere between one to three inches of snow by tonight. That’s not bad by any means, but you’d prefer if it didn’t snow at all.

But you’re digressing. You grab the bent up nail and with great difficulty force it out of the wood. At least they sell nails in bulks. Maybe you can melt them all down and make a weird sword or something to sell. You grab another nail and aim it right in.

“Mister Kanenas.” Oh King’s sake, you nearly dropped the nail. Miss Eckhardt walks up to you, blanket over her shoulders and hood over her head. She holds up a mug to you with a strange, steaming hot liquid. “Would you like some hot chocolate? A dwarf down the way is selling them for five silver a cup. It’s a strange beverage from ”

Kasimir has gotta start eating well, but five silver per cup seems a bit much for a beverage.
>>
> “I’m good. Thank you.”

You shake your head. “I’m good, thanks.” You carefully set your heel on the nail of the head.

Miss Eckhardt takes a sip of the hot chocolate as she looks at you, skeptically. She sighs deeply once she finishes, then says, “Mister Kanenas. I know you’re too cheap to buy a hammer. But couldn’t you use a rock or something to drive those nails in?”

You shrug, beating the nail down. “I could. But this is an easier solution. Rocks, you gotta spend time finding, then you gotta find the right angle, and make sure the rock doesn’t break apart. You keen?” She quirks her brow, not keen at all. “Basically, it’s easier to use my shoe.”

She rolls her eyes. “Typical.”

“Speaking of which, I could’ve used your help with putting the roof on,” you say. That was quite the difficult task, and you seriously hoping Miss Eckhardt or even Stiina would stop by to help get that in. Instead, you had to hoist Rusky up for him to help you bring the new wood roof over the stall. That wasn’t fun at all.

Miss Eckhardt nods. “I know. But I also know you would’ve used that as an excuse to look up my skirt.” She lifts up the edge of her skirt warily and slight, very knowing look on her face.

Okay, she has a point there.

“Anyway, you almost done?” she asks.

You nod. “Just this last nail.” You drive it in with a loud thump. Good. “And we’re done! This stall is now an improvised shelter against the cold of the winter season.” You happily place your shoe back on, and groan in bliss as you feel your foot warm back up in the cool softness inside of it. “Though, Miss Eckhardt, I do have to note a slight problem, in case you’re uncomfortable with it.”

Miss Eckhardt nods again. “I’m fully aware. It’s the fact that you were only able to afford one mattress and one blanket and there’s three of us.”

Rusky barks, sitting in between you two, happy to be included.

“Just want to know if you’re uncomfortable with sharing the mattress.” You smirk. “I certainly am not.”

She huffs. “Pervert.” She snaps her finger, getting back on top.

You cross your arms. “We’ll share and you’ll like it. You know why?” Miss Eckhardt pouts a bit, crossing her arms in anticipation for your lovely explanation of why you two should be sharing the same mattress despite not having any form of sexual relationship. “Because one of us is going to freeze to death without the blanket. And you do not want to wake up with a frozen corpse at your feet, that really wrecks your day.”

“I suppose.” She takes another sip of hot chocolate, apparently not bothering to argue the point. It’s a good point honestly. “Anyway, we’re done right?” You nod, pulling out some hardtack then popping it into your mouth. “Excellent. Miss Strafniki said she’d be a bit busy today because of the arrival of the noble.”

You nod, heading around to the front of the stall with her. You lift up the front cover, putting up the stakes as well to keep it and turn it into a nice little awning. “You know which one it is?” you ask.

Satchel walks over. Oh great. “Well I hear word it’s Princess Patricia Parisia Perrinius Prometheus the Promiscuous!” he says, happily. “She’s one of the more shopping types too, so I look forward to selling a sword or two to her.” He leans on your counter, bouncing his eyebrows up. “If you know what-“

“Oh her?” you say.

You cross your arms, deciding to reconsider the story of how you once frustratedly rutted with the Princess so eagerly that it probably would’ve birthed an heir to the throne and started a whole new bloodline. “Well, Satchel. I tell you what, I could probably sell something to her. Consider me something of an exotic and charismatic salesman, yeah?”

He laughs, slapping your counter in disbelief. “Haha, bully! That’s nothing but a load of Elven hogwash. Look at what you got here!” He points over to the stack of books on Miss Eckhardt’s side. “You got a bunch of books that only eggheads and hardcore historics would want.” He points to all of your knick-knacks, fresh from the garbage. “And you’ve got all this useless junk! What’s she gonna want?”

You shrug. “Maybe my penis.” Miss Eckhardt coughs, wheezing and grinning. You must have caught her mid-drink. “You liked that, didn’t ya?” She waves her hand, turning away and snickering quietly.

Satchel crosses his arms, gently stroking his beard. “You’re quite confident, ain’t you?” You cross your arms, staring down at him. “Very well. How about a bet then?” He quickly runs over to his stall, then pulls out a simple looking sword. “This sword is the worst sword I have ever made, feel it!”

You take the sword, and immediately you notice something wrong. It feels off-balance and… is the hilt too short? And the blade isn’t a blade at all, more like a table top. This isn’t a sword at all! “Let me guess, you want me to sell this.”

“Not just sell it, sell it to herfor five-hundred silver!” he says. “Do that, and I’ll see to it you get a free Stall at the Jousting grounds.” Oh, that would be lovely, those permits go for over seven hundred silver!

And you yourself, after subtracting the silver from your expenses on the lumber and the mattress and everything else… You have about fifty silver left.

“And if I don’t sell it?” you ask.

Satchel looks over at Miss Eckhardt, grinning. “Old Herringbone has got a lovely little outfit for her to help me advertise my stall at the Joust.” Herringbone appears, quickly sliding in next to Satchel, reluctantly. “Show her.”

The big Orc pulls out a notebook, then flips through a few pages. He shows you the outfit.

… Oh sweet King’s mercy.

“I am not wearing that,” she says simply. “No. No!” She shakes her head, recoiling in disgust. “It’s so… revealing and… who would wear that!? I’d look like a whore!”

Oh by the King, whoever loses, you win.

Kind of risky. If she's carried on with her promiscuous ways after visiting Kanenas, then her father/other misc. advisers may have assigned some guardians to her to ensure that she doesn't father an illegitimate child for an heir or ruin her prospects for marriage.

On the other hand, getting a tourney stall would be a huge shot in the arm for our cash flow. There's bound to be at least a few nobles with deep pockets and a taste for good literature.

> Fine, I’ll take your bet.

You hold out your hand to him. “Very well.” Miss Eckhardt leans in, looking at you both as you seal the deal with a hand shake. “I can sell you that sword and I guarantee you that I will sell you the clothes on her back too.”

“You wish!” He lets go and turns around, waddling back to his stall.

Herringbone smiles, placing his notebook back into his pack. “Good luck to you, Kasimir. And to you Miss Eckhardt, do not worry if you lose. The outfit is deceptively warm, I’ve made sure of it.” Miss Eckhardt glares at him, prompting him to make a very hasty retreat.

You hop over the counter, sitting down in the relatively warmth of the stall. Miss Eckhardt glares at you. “Seriously?” She holds up the sword by the blade, indicating just how completely blunt it is. “How are you going to sell this crud? Not even a Halfling will take this!” She drops it down on the counter, sitting down next to you angrily.

“Relax,” you say. “I’ll sell it, we get a free permit to sell at the Joust, things will be Kingly.”

“You better hope so, or else you’re sleeping on the floor.” She opens up a book very angrily then goes on to read angrily as well. You don’t know how she does it, but it’s adorable anyway. Rusky happily sets his head down on her lap, whining happily as she angrily pets him.

The morning bell rings. The gates should be opening at this point. Then you hear a few merchants leave their stalls, happily moving onto the gatehouse itself. “She’s here!” yells one of them. “The Princess has arrived!”

You and Miss Eckhardt jump out of the stall and start walking with the other merchants. “So…” Miss Eckhardt twiddles her fingers a bit, looking down. “Do you know the Princess very well?”

You shake your head. “It was one of those situations, she saw, decided she needed some time, and then left. I’m sure she doesn’t even remember my name.” You look down at her, obviously seeing how nervous she is. Oh, you see where this is going. “No, we’re not in some kind of secretive relationship. Not like the Elf and the Hunter.”

She looks up at, you surprised. “You know that story?”

“What scholar doesn’t?” you say. “Classic tale of star-crossed lovers whose love ultimately cannot be. Of course, we all know that having relations with Elves is a tricky business, they’ve never been seen beyond the forests.”

Miss Eckhardt nods. “I don’t think they even exist anymore.”

-

You’re barely able to get far into the crowd as people start mobbing the streets, eager to get a glimpse of the Princess herself. Most people here in the High City of Imperial City rarely see foreigners beyond the adventurers, and they sure don’t see other nobles from other parts of Therindel that much often either. You’d be one of them anyway if this were any different.

You cross your arms, Miss Eckhardt getting pushed against your side by the rowdy crowd. She huffs. “This better be worth it.” You hear the trumpets. Before the gate there to meet her is the City Guard, and there, by the Guard Captain’s horse is Stiina. She wears her armor proudly, and on her spear waves a little banner, indicating her a Staff Sergeant. Who knew?

You hear the rumbling of horses, and galloping in comes the Princess’ Companion Cavalry, wearing wings upon their helmet and wearing black tabards over their armor. They settle to the side and start forcing the crowd back, you can barely get a view of anything now.

But finally, you catch a view of her, right past two horsemen. You had hoped that in the two years you haven’t seen her, maybe she had changed her ways a bit. Perhaps even wore more clothing even.

And boy you were disappointed.

She smiles, her outfit revealing nothing to the imagination as she rides up to the Guard Captain, apparently not feeling the cold at all. “Hello there, Captain Rosellius.” She looks to the crowd and waves, giving a kiss to them. “And hello people of the High City!” Everyone cheers, throwing their hats in the air to salute her.

You’re back at the stall with Stiina and Miss Eckhardt. Stiina carefully holds the sword Satchel gave for you for the bed. “And you have to sell this trashy thing for five-hundred silver? I wouldn’t buy it if you paid me five-hundred,” she says. She takes a swipe, and nearly doubles herself over with how unbalanced it is.

You nod. “That’s right. It’s five-hundred in the bag along with a free permit to the Jousting market if I can sell that to her.”

Miss Eckhardt glares at you, puffing her cheeks. “There’s certainly a fair bit you can sell to her.”

“Oh please, Miss Eckhardt…” You grab your Reso, and start tuning it gently. “I’m sure she doesn’t even remember my name.”

Stiina giggles. “That’s still funny. I honestly don’t think you did it. You’re a horny mutt in a field full of bitches, Kasimir, that’s honestly how I’d describe you.” You wouldn’t describe yourself like that, but here we are. “How do you do it?”

She sighs. “Actually, Captain Rosellius is having me take care of the Princess for today, you know, womanly stuff.” Oh, you’re quite aware. “But I get off later tonight. If you need something, I’m at my place.” She takes up her spear and steps off from the counter. “Kasimir, I’ll try and visit when I can, but expect much, alright?” You and Miss Eckhardt nod. “Good, good. Eckhardt, you take good care of our little mutt here, you understand?”

Miss Eckhardt sighs, crossing her arms in a huff. “I suppose.”

“You could try it now,” you say quickly. She rolls her eyes, continuing to sit and read her book. You suppose she won’t try it now. “Come on, see what you want, see if there is something that catches your fancy!”

And as soon as you say that, a short looking adventurer walks up to your counter. He picks up a book from Eckhard’s stack then asks, “How much?”

Miss Eckhardt grins. “Two-hundred silver!”

He whistles a bit. “Eh… think I could get it cheaper? One-seventy five?”

“Um…” Miss Eckhardt scratches her chin, nervous. “I don’t normally haggle. It’s two-hundred.”

The adventurer looks down at the book. “It’s just a book, how about one-fifty?”

“Oh, I wouldn’t say it’s just a book, that’s been written by one of the cholars of the old ages,” says Miss Eckhardt. “It’s incredibly valuable, and it’s in the standard Old English!” She stands up and opens up the book for the adventurer. “Look, it’s in the literary past tense too, so you know it’s genuine.”

“Oh.” The adventurer quirks his brow, looking less interested by the second. Oh jeez. “I was hoping for something I could actually read. Well uh…” He places the book down and starts walking away.

“Hey!” Miss Eckhardt yells after him. “Come on, books are great! I love books!” She clutches her own book like a security blanket, frowning. “Come on…” Too late.

Ugh. That was painful.

Actually all things considered we aren't doing to bad for ourselves.

I mean yeah things suck, but that's because our dad left a huge debt. We've apparently paid off most of it and are sleeping decently, if not well.

You scoot up next to her as she sulks. “Hey, come on. You did pretty well, you were just serving to the wrong type of customer.” She looks at you, skeptically. Rusky whines, rubbing his head against her leg. “See, even Rusky thinks you did good!” You pat Rusky on the head. “Good boy, Rusky.”

Miss Eckhardt sighs. “Look, I know you’re trying to cheer me up, but forget it. I never was good at this mercantile stuff.” She kicks back and opens up her book. “My brother was the one who knew how to work the customer, not me.”

“Maybe so,” you say. “But hard times tend to make people desperate. I tell you what, you observe me when I make a sale, look closely at what you see. See if you can replicate that for the next time, okay?”

“Okay.” She goes back to reading, apparently uninterested in further conversation.

Another adventurer walks up to the stall, apparently bored. Then he sees that weird dreamcatcher thingy that you’ve had up there for past few weeks. “Oi, stranger. The heck is that?” You look at it. Is someone actually interested in that thing!? “How much for that weirdo circular star thingy?”

You shrug. “Fifty silver, stranger.”

He scratches his chin, groaning and humming a bit. Miss Eckhardt looks at him disgustedly, and you yourself can’t really handle any of this. Just go away already!” “Alrighty, I’ll buy it.” He pulls up his inventory rift, then drops a sack of fifty silver. Excellent. First sale of the day! You take it and tip your hat to him as he leaves with that weird circle wood string thing. You honestly can’t remember where you got it from but hopefully it gives him purpose.

“So, what did we learn?” you say.

Miss Eckhardt sighs. “That we have to something people want to buy?”

“Well…” You sit down, counting up the silver. “That’s a good start. But what else?”

“Stick to your guns, be confident?” she asks.

You shrug. “Sure. A good mark of a salesman is someone who doesn’t haggle. If you’re good, you won’t need to haggle. You could sell the clothes he was wearing back to him if you’re as good as me.”

“If you’re so good, why are you still poor?” she asks.

“Reasons.” You pull out a bit of hardtack. “Anyway, I do have to admit, I’m nervous. The Princess hasn’t shown her tits around here and we still have to sell that sword.” She glares at you, folding her arms angrily. Oh, right. Bet. “Look, sorry for not consulting you. But five-hundred silver and a free stall at the Joust, that’s a steal!”

“Hmph. You’re not going to catch me in that outfit,” she says. You lean forward, then see the Princess, walking with Captain Rosellius, his Standard Bearer, and a group of Companion Infantry.

The group walks up to your stall, briefly going over your wares. The Princess herself is deep in conversation with Captain Rosellius, who, like his standard bearer, doesn’t look very interested. “And that is how the Siege works, you have to be patient. You got to ease things in, like how you cook food. You do it gently. You don’t brute force your way in, it all gets everywhere.” She looks down at Miss Eckhardt’s books. She picks up one, much to Miss Eckhardt’s surprise. “Hm… this second or first edition?”

Miss Eckhardt recovers quickly. “Second.”

“Hm…” The Princess purses her lips, quickly flipping through the pages. She is deep in thought, you can tell by how concentrated she looks. She places the book down. “I have no idea what any of this says.” Miss Eckhardt plants her head in her book with a soft thump noise. The Princess herself looks over to your sword. “Merchant, how much for this sword?”

“Five-hundred,” you say. The Princess looks over it, then immediately recoils. “It’s a bit tricky, isn’t it.”

“Feels like it wants to kill me,” says the Princess. She looks closer at you, then her brow rises up a bit. She leans, looking even more closely at you. Oh jeez. “Hm… have I seen you before? You look familiar…” She snaps her finger. “Maybe I rutted with you once or twice.”

Could probably play it off as a joke item or as a training sword meant to be utterly terrible.

Your not always going to have the perfect weapon in combat, training with something this ungainly would be useful in a scrabble for your life since it would teach the wielder how to balance off weight.

You smile, chuckling. “You still sensitive behind the knees, my lady?” And to that, the Princess’ eyes light up like the beacons of lore.

“Oh yeah, you’re Kasimir!” She points at you, grinning. “You’re that sly merchant from Solarno, oh-…” She covers her mouth, shocked. She looks over at Captain Rosellius. “Captain, I had sex with him once!”

Captain Rosellius nods, a neutral expression on his face. “You’ve had sex with half the people here and more.”

The Standard Bearer nods, frowning. “Including the Orc cook down the ways just earlier.”

She waves them off dismissively. “Yeah…” She looks back to you, happily. “How are things, Kasimir? I trust you’re doing okay?”

You nod. “I am, definitely prepared for the winter.” You motion over to Miss Eckhardt. “My newest business partner, Emily Eckhardt. She owns those books, most of them are pretty old and were recovered by herself during her adventuring days.”

“Oh, neat!” She holds up the sword. “What are you doing selling this? I’d give this to my own assassin, that’s how bad it is.” She snaps her finger quickly. “And don’t pull that ancient artifact crap on me, I brought my appraising Kobold with me this time!” She whistles, and out from the crowd comes a very sorry looking, short half-ling sized Kobold in a tattered cloak. Its an exceptionally unbalanced exotic weapon.

note how it throws you off when you swing it. Thats obviously due to much its weight being off the center and closer to the tip of the weapon. Imagine its destructive power as it crushes your foes. Only someone exceptionally skilled could master such a one hit one kill weapon, where a missed strike would spell certain doom.

Look at this sword. Just look at it. It's horrible. Atrocious. It offends all other swords simply by existing. The balance is off. The weight varies. And the blade is hardly a blade at all. It is perhaps, the most terrible sword for fighting in the world. Hardly worth the fine dwarven steel it's made of. Which makes it perfect as a training weapon! You stand up, placing your hand on the blade. “It’s a training sword. Just feel the weight of it.” You push down on it somewhat, noting how she has to push really hard to keep it back up. “Balance is off, weight is all over the place. It’s Dwarven Steel is the only good thing about it honestly.”

The Princess shrugs. “I’m not a fan of Dwarven weapons, too heavy for me.” Satchel looks over from his stall, glaring at her.

“Anyway,” you say. “This sword is basically training in off-center, when you have to work with what you get. You’re not always going to have the perfect weapon for the perfect situation. This could be a table leg or an Elf’s arm for all you care. It’s all in how you use it. You certainly can’t use it for real fights, but train with it, see how it works with you. You’ll better appreciate the fine masterwork crafting of a real sword by Therindel men and Therindel blacksmithing.”

The Princess smiles at you, eyes half-lidded. “Oooh, you really know how to paint scat gold, Kasimir.” She scratches her chin. “Tell you what, do you have any books on mathematics, siege tactics with Miss Eckhardt?”

Miss Eckhardt holds up a textbook as thick as the Princess’ tits. “Here’s one! On the Siege of Xalfacia by Quinton Quill!” She places it down on the counter, and you all hear the loud wooden creaking of the counter buckling under the weight. “It’s in Old Standard though and in the literary tense.”

The Princess giggles. “No problem!” She snaps her finger. The Companions escort up an even more sorry-looking succubus, with a tied up bifurcated tail and faded red hair, she wears nothing but a heavy metal collar around her neck and a scratchy looking brown dress. The Princess looks at her. “You know Old Standard, right?” The succubus nods. “Good, good, have it translated by the end of the week.” The Princess gives the succubus a quick kiss on the cheek, then turns to you. “Alright, how much do I owe you?”

“Well, with the book, about six-hundred fifty silver.” The Princess happily pulls that amount of silver from her inventory rift, dropping it down on your counter. “Thanks for your patronage.”

“My pleasure!” She crosses her arms over her ample assets. “I must say Kasimir, if you’re ever available…” One of her Companion Infantry coughs, obviously not intending on making her available. “Oh come on!” she whines.

“We let you have the Orc,” he says. “No more for today.”

She sighs, huffing. “Fiiiine.” She looks back at you, smiling. “Whenever you’re available!” She takes the sword and the book, and with her retinue walks down the ways.

That is the stuff. “Why do you say that?”

The Captain says, “The succubus mostly, she might try to get you into a threesome with her and it I reckon. Try to stay out of trouble.” He turns, but then immediately stops and looks back at you. “Oh yes, Staff Sergeant Strafniki told me about you.”

“Did she?” you ask. “What’d she say?”

He shrugs. “Eh, she tells me you might be suited for Guard duty.” He sizes you up and down. “Hm, I don’t see what she sees.”

“Well, sir. Neither do I,” you say. “I’m not really Guard material.”

He shrugs. “Not everyone is, but take Ensign Eagleton here.” He motions to his very cute young Standard Bearer, holding the flag of Lord Lamarr the Fiftieth. She stands at attention, waving the flag on high. “Youngest Ensign we have at eighteen and very dedicated.”

“Well,” you say. “I’m not eighteen, or a very cute young girl like she is.” She blushes a bit, looking away.

The Captain nods. “Right then, safe travels.” He and the Ensign leave you to catch up to the Princess. Miss Eckhardt looks at you, smiling, at least happy that she won’t have to wear that outfit. You’re actually quite disappointed that you sold it. You would’ve loved to have seen her in it.

She's twenty-fifth in line mostly because all of her domains are relatively small. She governs them however, she lacks one thing.

An overseas territory (the frozen north doesn't count as it's otherwise the spiritual home of many humans). Many nobles in Therindel long for the day they can take an army across the ocean to subjugate a rebellion in the name of claiming a new domain and potentially bump up the line of succession.

>>35984448
She calls so many feasts that her peasantry have unofficially nicknamed her "the Cougar of Therindel".

>>35984471
The King himself administrated Therindel until his death. Due to his lack of biological heirs, the mantle had to pass onto someone, and that left the fifty nobles who had served him well during his reign. Therindel nearly ripped itself apart in the Civil Wars that followed, but things have mostly calmed down for now.

You smirk. “Just go get the permit, Satchel. I won’t rub nothing in your face.” As much as you’d love to describe how great the Princess was, you’re not that much of an asshole. Honest! But oh by the King how you would love to rub it in his face, that little midget doubting you can sell that sword.

He huffs, turning around and waddling off towards Mister Bureaugard’s office. Miss Eckhardt laughs quietly. “Hehe… looks like I won’t be wearing that Kingawful outfit!” And how disappointed you are at that. “I know you’re disappointed, Mister Kaneneas, but I’m sure that the Joust will more than make up for it, I can promise you that!”

You cross your arms. “I suppose so. Let’s get selling, see if we can get anything done before he comes back!”

As the sun start setting on the day, you’ve found no customers, at all. The few that did come by, none of them were particularly interested and were just browsing. Ugh, the nerve of it. But you can understanding considering the closing winter and the Joust. Most people are probably saving their cash and their coins for the souvenirs and the food at the Joust.

You remember last year’s joust. Fifty silver for a sandwich! Outrageous and yet genius.

You and Satchel mull over your permit. “And I will take Stall A-21.” You smile. “And look at that, it’s right by the Jousting grounds too.”

Satchel laughs mockingly. “Haha, yes, how fortunate for you, Kanenas.” You quickly sign off your permit, laughing more genuinely as Miss Eckhardt curls up in her blanket. “Alright, there’s your stall. You better get things prepared otherwise! There’ll be a lot of people and I’m sure none of them will be going to the Joust to read or…” He looks at the mugs and glasses you pilfered, “or drink out of nasty cups!”

You laugh harder. “Ah, Satchel, calm yourself! Anyway, away with you. I’ll see you at the Joust next week, alright?” He yells indescribably, leaving you for his stall to pack up. You look over at Miss Eckhardt, who sips on another fresh cup of hot chocolate from that Orc vendor. “So, Miss Eckhardt, we are now six-hundred and fifty silver richer.”

She smiles, looking up at you. Rusky barks also, happily wagging his tail. Even he realizes the worth of it. “So, what now?” You open your mouth. “We’re not going to the brothel.”

Damn it, but-

“No.”

But Winona-

“No.”

“Let’s go find Stiina, see if she wants to hit up the tavern with us.”

Miss Eckhardt narrows her eyes. “We’re going to hit up a tavern?”

“Sure!” you say. “It’ll be fun. It’s been a while since I’ve had a drink anyway and you know, Miss Eckhardt, you look like you could loosen up some. Just saying.” She continues to narrow her eyes at you. “Look, I’ll pay for it, don’t you worry.”

“Good, good.” She slaps her book then stands up to follow you. You point down at Rusky, who sits down obediently as your guard dog for the stall.

-

Stiina is out in the cold by the palace, her things packed up in her satchel. She yawns heavily, then she warms up considerably once she sees you two. “Oh, Kasimir, Eckhardt. Good to see you two!” She folds her arms, smiling. “What’s up?”

“Just wanted to see if you had the time to hit up a tavern or something,” you say. “Maybe we could have a few drinks or something, on me of course.”

Stiina looks over at Miss Eckhardt, who doesn’t look wholly satisfied. “Tell you what, how about we go where Miss Eckhardt wants to go. I’m sure she knows a good bar or two, right?”

Miss Eckhardt blinks, catching your attention. “Well…” She brushes a lock from her eyes, adjusting her glasses quickly. “There is one place by the docks.”

The sailors play out in the cold, fishing for cash from passing strangers as you all step into a very calm, yet warm bookstore. The old man smiles at Miss Eckhardt. “Emily!” Miss Eckhardt skips up to him, hugging him over the counter. “It’s good to see you again! I thought you were out on the adventuring path!”

“I decided to retire back to the City,” she says. “I’m here to stay for quite a while, Mister Booker.”

The old man smiles happily, jolly even. “Very good, very good!” He motions to rows upon rows of books. “Feel free to take whatever you’d like!”

Stiina smirks as you stand there, confused. “So this is her idea of fun,” you say. You can see Miss Eckhardt happily start picking out books from the shelves, as if she were a child on King’s Day.

Stiina chuckles. “Well, I’ll be outside.” She pats your shoulder and heads out.

You shiver a bit, standing next to Stiina at the window of the bookstore. You kind of wish she had chosen to wait inside. You’ll catch your death out here. The Sailors don’t seem to mind the weather at all, happily playing their instruments. You wish you had brought your Reso along with you, you might have entertained yourself by playing with them. Stiina smiles at you. “Not a fan of books?”

You shrug. “Books are fine, in moderation.” You look down on her. “So, anything exciting happen, Stiina?”

She drops her smile, turning her expression into more of concentration. “Um… well, the Princess tried to lay bones with one of the chefs, but we had to put a stop to that. Other than that, Captain Rosellius and Ensign Eagleton had me dismissed pretty early today.” Hm, not bad. “Kasimir, there is one thing though.”

You nod. “What is it?”

“Princess Prometheus was talking shop with some of us guards, and she was really wanting to expand across the ocean, dig herself a paying territory, you know?” Of course, all the big nobles have some kind of stake in lands across the ocean. Even the Black Baron himself governs over Solarno to a small extent. “To do that, she’s starting up a Free Company, hiring volunteer adventurers and the like.”

You nod again. “Yeah? That sounds nice.”

“I was thinking of joining her, once the Joust is over,” she says. Oh. Well.

Well look at it like this anon.

The Princess is looking to get overseas territory and she'll need a city for it, I don't imagine one will crop up overnight or be ready for her immediately, so we can get in early and setup shop and dominate the trade routes and make a killing working the trade of the new city and territories
>>
>>35985509
Adventuring and traveling merchant are two different experiences. One involves significantly less dungeon delving.

We should offer to leave her the stall if she doesn't want to come, though. Which I doubt since she knows what a terrible merchant she is, but it's the thought that counts.

Wouldn't going with Stiina pretty much be like those explorers who went about searching for new trade routes for England and Spain? While they didn't have to deal with magic and undead, they did have to do a lot of what could be considered adventuring. Going on long expeditions and sometimes running out of supplies, cutting through wilderness, etc.

You cross your arms, sighing. Another one gets away you suppose. “You should do it, Stiina.” She looks at you, surprised. “Just saying, I won’t hold you back none. I mean, it’d be hypocritical of me. I know the city can be pretty stifling, I’ve been three years and I’m already kind of sick of it but…” You shrug. “Honestly, I do kind of wish you could stay.”

She smiles. “That’s sweet, Kasimir.”

You chuckle, scratching the back of your head. “Hey, I don’t get all the girls for nothing.” She rolls her eyes, giggling. “Come on, tell you what, maybe I could start a caravan trade or something. Bring Eckhardt along with me, we do business across the seas.”

“Well…” Stiina scratches her chin. “Would you make the journey?” You quirk your brow. “Look at yourself, Kasimir. Besides, the territories aren’t exactly all fun and games.” You tilt your head curiously. “Kasimir, I know you don’t want to let go of me, but just think of yourself for a second. It’d be expensive to start a whole new business back home, hell where the debt collectors can get you by just needing to walk to find you.”

“I just don’t want to leave you alone,” you say. “I mean, honestly, if that idea doesn’t work, you’ll at least write back or visit?”

She pats your cheek. “Of course.” She stands up straight, then sighs. “And as for Eckhardt…” You and her look inside the bookstore, to see her still stacking up books to take with her. “I think you and her would make a good match.”

You shrug. “I feel like I’ve been here before.” Stiina frowns. Oh great, now you have to tell her. “I was younger, there was this adventurer like yourself named Dina. Lovely girl, had fair blonde hair and glimmering brown eyes. Wore her armor proudly with the crest of her family.” You lean against the window, reminiscing. Oh, you can smell Dina’s soft scent from the day you two first kissed, like apples in the trees. You can still hear her hearty laughter after she pushed you to the ground and into the mud.

You wish you all you had of her wasn’t memories.

Stiina looks down. “Well, Kasimir…”

“I just don’t want to lose someone like her again,” you say. “That would break my heart, Stiina.”

She steps up closer to you, then looks up at you with those pretty eyes of hers. “Kasimir, you should learn to let go of that. Don’t let it hold you down.” She steps up and gives you a quick kiss on the cheek. “Listen, I should head back to my place. You should head back to your stall, okay?”

You nod. “Alright, Stiina, but-“ She places her finger on your lip, shushing you.

“No buts, young man.” She smiles. She turns away, then waves goodbye to you. “See you around, Kasimir. Tell Eckhardt I needed to go, okay?”

You nod. “Alright.” Ugh… You place your hand over your heart, biting your lip.

Miss Eckhardt steps out of the shop, then looks around. “Where did Miss Strafniki go?” She looks up at you, then frowns in concern. “Are you okay, Mister Kanenas?”

We might have to take care of that debt, first. Setting up a company and securing funding takes a lot of time, barring any priceless relics that Miss Eckhardt may have unknowingly acquired in her travels.
>>
> “Would you be fine with traveling a bit more?”

You start leading Miss Eckhardt back to your stall. “Would you be fine with traveling a bit more?” you ask. Miss Eckhardt frowns even more deeply at that. “Well, Stiina has told me she plans to join the Free Company with the Princess after the Joust and I was wondering if we could go along too, see if we could sell our wares abroad. I mean, there’s very little for me here in the High City anymore, and I was thinking of going back home to mother, see how she was doing.”

Miss Eckhardt sighs. “I don’t want to travel anymore.”

“Really?”

She nods. “Yeah.” She hands her books off to you, quickly, so she can gesture freely. Heavy, but nothing you can’t handle. “Mister Kanenas. I came back here because traveling just isn’t the life for me. I thought it was, Norman said it’d be, my brother, everyone told me to get out there, make something of my life! And I did!” She sulks, hugging herself. “And I just couldn’t. I’m not magical, I don’t fight or anything, heck all those books I got were just leftovers the other Adventurers let me have because they never shared any of the loot with me.”

You grunt. “Maybe you’re just exaggerating.”

“Exaggerating nothing,” she says. “And the worst part of it was seeing all the other girls get their guys and… just leave me in the dust because I was too slow to catch up.” She shakes her head. “I don’t care where you go, Mister Kanenas. But I’m here to stay.”

You sigh, looking down.

“You want to go though, don’t you?” You don’t answer that. It’s not concrete. “Hm.” Miss Eckhardt looks down, adjusting her glasses.

Rusky barks, happily welcoming you back to the stall. You step inside, bringing the front cover down over the counter and closing up shop. Once the books are settled in, Miss Eckhardt steps into the back, ready for sleep. You sigh, then tell Rusky to stay out under the counter. He nods, sliding in under the counter happily, wagging his tail. He’ll tire himself out.

You sit down next to Miss Eckhardt, who lies down on her side, underneath the blanket. “Well, good night, Miss-“

“Mister Kanenas.” She sits up, looking at you with a deep blush on her face. You tilt your head, worried. “If you’re going to leave… could you give me one night, with a man?” She scoots up next to you, kneeling down by your side.

Thanks, but I think that I might need to sit down and think on what I really want out of my life. Not entirely sure if I want to go or stay, yet. Either way, I'm going to need a plan to settle my affairs here before I do anything drastic.

Don't be so defeatist.

But, think about this as well, travelling doesn't just mean adventuring, you may not be a mage or fighter but you could be a great trader if you give your self a chance.

This

There goes my hopes of taking StiIna and Eckhardt through the countryside as we sell our wares out of a caravan :(/
>>
>>35986414
Backing this for what it's worth.
>>
>>35986578
We do it Spice and Wolf Style!
>>
>>35986559
How do they go against the others?
>>
>>35986390
really should rent a proper room for the night.
>>
>>35986613
Oh right, if anything they should do it in a proper room.
>>
>>35986414
And then what?

I'm all for joining Stiina at a later date and not leaving immediately and making sure we're in good shape and that Eckhardt can look after the stall if we leave it to her, but we need to have a plan for that.

Seeing as we can't be Kanenas Caravan Co anymore, I think we should take that month or two to get in good shape, get healthy and help Eckhardt learn the trade, before we go over to see Stiina.

We could make it a regular trip, every month or so we go visit her and bring back valuable exotic items and things to sell with Eckhardt, travelling between High City and the Princesses new place.

>>35986612
One is a maybe, the other a no, and the other other a yes.

That sounds like an awesome idea in place of the caravan dream getting shot down.
>>
>>35986651
I think this is good idea. We should see if we can pursue this.
>>
>>35986651
That sounds good, has my backing as our new future plan.

And it means Kasimir has a girl in each city, gods knows he needs them.

You take her wrists, gently lying her back down. She swallows hard, obviously nervous, obviously never having been taken by a man before. You look down on her, then say, “I don’t know if I’m leaving, not just yet.” You sigh. “But at the same time, I don’t want to say no to you. I’m just confused as to why you picked someone like me.”

She twiddles her fingers. “Can’t it just be because I trust you?”

You cross your arms. “Would you trust me when I say that I do genuinely want you to come with me?” you ask.

Miss Eckhardt bites her lip. “I-…” She sits up. “I suppose I do.” You gently press on her shoulder, forcing her down again slowly. “Mister Kanenas?”

“I’m not gonna say no to you,” you say. You lean and gently press your lips against hers. She yelps quietly, in surprise. You recoil back. “What- what is it?”

“Nothing!” She flails her hands about. “It- you caught me by surprise, honestly! I…” She places her fingers on her lip. You kiss her again, quietening her. This time, she stays quiet, and slowly you move above her. You settle down on top of her, bringing the blanket over the both of you.

She pulls away, breathing in heavily, her face completely red. “M-Mister Kanenas.” You quieten her down, shushing her with a finger to her lips.

“Just for tonight, okay?” you say. She nods quickly, violently. She knows.

And for tonight, the two of you needn’t worry about the cold.

Thanks for running Schteel.

>>35986651
That sounds like an awesome plan, we should tell the girls and start working towards that, that way they can both be happy, and we get to be with both of them, and also make profits with them.
>>
>>35986707
Man, you are one hell of a storyteller.
>>
>>35986786
Well he just took the virginity of two woman and will take responsibility.

Guys we can decide what we want to do later.

We need to figure out how to get goods to sell at our jousting stall.
We've the books, we should look to find the bird and see if he has any more guns he has made. And tell him, we can do the same thing again. Give him 300S per gun sold. And sell them for 1000S easy at the jousting stall.
Money once they are sold. And look for other possible merchants who couldn't get a spot and offer 50/50 on items sold at your stall. Heck we could rent it out and just take a clean % cut of everything they sell.
What do you guys think. We don't really have much to offer other than books.
>>
>>35987017

That sounds like a good idea. A kind of general stall at the Joust on behalf of the merchants who can't afford a license there. It'll also boost awareness of Kanesas' selling skills.
>>
>>35987017
I still want my Spice and Wolf caravan ending.

Though I feel bad for Tax collector girl
>>
>>35987146
yeah, i think she also deep in debt.

I also think she is in deep deep shit right at this moment.
>>
>>35987209
Maybe she can invest in us. But Eckhardt and Stina is priority.

I think Kashmir can only handle two in a serious relationship
>>
>>35987232
invest in us for what?
>>
>>35987017

We're going to have to get somebody who's really good at book-keeping if that plan goes into action, however. Need to keep track of whose stock sells and which money belongs to which merchant. With any luck, Miss Eckhardt's experience as a librarian will help with that.
>>
>>35987321
To fund our Caravan business
>>
>>35987209
>yeah, i think she also deep in debt.
She kicked in 300 silver to the extra payment because we gave her some hot dickings. I don't think she's hurting for funds.
>>
>>35987375
that works out perfectly.
>>35987388
We shouldn't need any money. I just need to use our contacts. And sell our stall/rent * with a down payment.
We sell it, it's >50g
We rent it. Should be atleast 1-2 gold a month.
With a 5gold down payment.

BTW, I still think it'd be wise to invest in spending the 50 silver a week. To buy food, even if we can only cook at Stinna's place. Everyone else can buy their own food. Or pay w.e share.
We need our strength back. * And not look like a dying man*
>>
Fun thread, boss. Thanks.

I agree, now we've got a plan we need to get in shape, we can bring Eckhardt over to Stiina's to cock for all of us a couple times a week
>>
>>35988372

to COOK for us all, Freudian slip
>>
