Sparring with Sheszka was work all its own, but it certainly isn't anything like a bout with your mother.

Thank gods.

In the basement of the adventurers guild, you are currently standing idly by while a pair of incredibly pleased monsters stand side by side before you, leaning into their rewards.

Which are headpats, specifically. Your friends are enablers, and most likely entirely unreliable if you're ever in need of an intervention.

For the moment though, you've let go of your worries, and are enjoying the simple pleasures in life. Like comparing the exquisite softness of a harpy's head tufts to the velvet-like ears of a wolf girl. Your mind wanders as you gently pet your friends. What are other monsters like? What other monsters are there?

Do they have things on their heads, and will they let you pet them?

A cough draws your attention back to reality, and regrettably away from your friends. Who are both directing vicious glares at the perpetrator.

Lann's bandanna friend is standing there- Cliff. That's it. He's got a training sword slung over one shoulder, and an expectant sort of look on his face.
"I, ah, hate to be a bother, yeah?"

Your friends mutter simultaneously.
"Then do not."
"Yes."

The older adventurer plows on, regardless.
"Would you mind a bout? We don't get spiders in town, let alone ones running around with weapons. It's not something to pass up."

>"I do not mind, yes. Just a minute." (Finish headpats.)
>"Maybe not today. I need to get some food for myself."
>"Ah. Perhaps you should be wearing armour, first."

Do we ask Nin to come with us when we leave the forest?
Do we sit by the river in a bush and try and watch jins sister?
>>

Of course we ask Nin. More head pats!

What is the deal with watching Jin's sister though?
>>
>>35997573
>She's fond of the village, just as lazy as her sister when it comes to sleeping, and her drive to improve is limited to fishing better so she can sleep on rocks with a full stomach faster.
Sometimes the younger kids try to drop buckets of water on her while she's sleeping. Then it's a race to get in a building before she catches them, drags them to the river and drops them in
>>
>>35997573
She like to sunbathe on rocks after eating.
The village kids like to throw buckets of cold water on lazy harpies, then race to the nearest building for shelter.

Well, you're not anywhere approaching tired yet. Mom saw to that.
On the other hand, there's no way you're letting anyone interfere with your small piece of me time.

"Hmmm- I have time, yes. Just give me a moment, first."
"Sure, yeah."

He steps back, watching the spar between the bearded giant and the sword-wielding gate guard. Gate guard is actually pretty damn good with a blade, huh. You have no real method of judging a man's skills with a club, though. It just kinda looks the same to you as anything- No, nevermind, that's not important.

You turn back your friends. Sheszka is trying very hard to not look disappointed, while Jin has abandoned any pretense, and adopted some kind of childlike pouty face.

You giggle a bit when she snorts up at you, and work your hand into her hair, combing it out around the tufts decorating her head. Her expression melts as she leans into the treatment, breaking into a smile that encourages your fingers that much more. You pull Sheszka towards you, leaning her against you so you can scratch at her ears without effort. You can feel her smile spreading against your body, and you scratch a bit faster, targeting just behind the flicking wolf's ears. Her tail thumps against you, and you can see her leg jumping ever so slightly, twitching in time with your efforts.

You manage to break free after a minute or so, nodding to the pair as you move towards the arena. Cliff catches your movement in the corner of his eye, turning to face you as you advance.
It's not nearly as impressive as it sounds. Spotting a giant spider isn't exactly difficult.
>>
>>35997525

I think that it is a little out of character for Lyra to ask her to join her. At the same time, Nin will probably invite herself if she figures out we are leaving.
>>
>>35997857

He heads to a nearby free circle with you, and you can feel the crowd switching gears; a slowly closing ring. You're fairly certain you heard someone else taking bets. You smile.

Facing down your opponent to be, however, lets you put your finger directly on what's bothering you.
No, not literally.

"Ah-Cliff, yes?"
"Yeah, that's right."
"You are not wearing armour."
"Huh? I don't usually."

"Uhm. Is there someone here who can heal then? Or lend you armour?"

Alright, then!
Writing!
>>
>>35998003
the way it seems to work is, that weak races evolve more often. if we were a moth, we would be on a far higher evolution number by now.
So ultimately, we could meet a mothera type of mega moth who evolved a lot and is super strong.
its just that most people don't go around putting their lives in constant danger for the XP.
and an arachne's base evolution is stronger than the a moth's base

>>35998022
they all seem to have it. we buy from them sleep powder and lewd powder. that is chemical warfare.
>>
>>35998113
it was fairly thoroughly destroyed, we came to town to get it repaired.
But we got sidetracked with learning to be blacksmith instead.
>>
>>35998166
>if we were a moth, we would be on a far higher evolution number by now
We would also have had a lot less chance for heavy fighting though, so we would probably be at best at our current level.
>>
>>35998166
>the way it seems to work is, that weak races evolve more often.

You gain XP and evolve but pushing your limits and facing challenges.

By default, the weaker races face greater challenges so will evolve faster in the beginning. However, once they reach the level that they are no longer challenged like that, they stop evolving so fast.

The only way to evolve then is by intentionally going out looking for a challenge, like us.
>>
>>35998180
No, if got some scratches that we repaired with resin. Wasn't damaged bad at all.

We came to town mostly to take Jim home so Harpymom doesn't worry.
>>
>>35998166
>>35998189

It basically works out to an evolution by necessity model. An arachne can live comfortably in this forest without evolving once. A harpy or moth, on the other hand, would likely have to evolve at least a couple of times to deal with the occasional threats more competently.

As for MC mentality, it is a given that we would explore and adventure to about the same degree. However, the choice in evolutions would probably have emphasized stealth, confusion, and planning more than straight up brutality. I suspect we would probably be on evo 5 as opposed to 2.
>>
>>35998227
Yes, they were combat rolls. No, they weren't OUR combat rolls.

52 isn't terrible. Our opponent shouldn't be hurt to badly.
>>
>>35998297
>I suspect we would probably be on evo 5 as opposed to 2
Not even close. Look at Jin, for example, she is still behind us, despite being for her standards not any less thrill seeking. Our big game hunting made a huge difference, that we wouldn't have had as moth.
>>
>>35998166
Sleep and lewd powder do not compare to raining the dust of some fluoride hellfire compound on our enemies.
>>
>>35998355
She's also not been with us all the time, or keep on killing bears.
>>
He continues on, gesturing with a training sword and a smile on his face.
"I know arachne are supposed to be strong, but I'm an adventurer. I won't break that easy!"

You ignore him, leaning double and putting one hand against the floor.

"Uh- What're you-"

Your other hand comes to your lips as you look up at him, curling and extending one finger across your mouth.
"Ssssshhhh. Watch."

There's a crack as rock and dirt give way beneath your strength. Conversation stills, stops. The room becomes very, very quiet.
It barely takes any effort. You drive your hand straight into the earth, stopping once you reach your elbow.

The effect is immediate. Betting explodes from the sidelines, though you have a feeling it is swinging violently in one direction. The gate guard is laughing, a few other adventurers are cursing up a storm.

Above all, the dumbfounded look on his face as you simply push your hand into the floor is very gratifying.

He swallows heavily, looking between you and your wolf.
You shake your head.

"Sheszka is much stronger than she looks, yes. Tougher, too. Put on some armour."

"Yeah. I, uh. Yeah. I'll do that."

It takes a few minutes, but the other adventurers help him into a light, plated looking set of cloth. He hops in place a few times, testing the weight, his speed.

He taps a few plates, and satisfied with what he's got, steps back into the ring.
You both nod, taking stances.

He angles himself sideways at you, free hand leading, holding his sword loosely behind him- he moves shifting his weight and hopping gliding towards you...

they seem to live in very dense communities, unlike the arachne which are more loners.
If their communities have proper military/guard system, then they do not actually need to ever evolve depending on their job

Just imagine, 20 years down the line with us raising kids. Mom beat us that badly as a Widow, we'll likely be a half-metal-lord-super-spider, our poor poor kids...
>>
You can start off slow, you guess. Poke at him a bit. See how good he is.

Of course, your body isn't quite listening to your brain. Maybe you should talk to Mom about that? 'Your training is too good, yes. I tried to go easy on someone, and shattered all of their limbs.' 'Oh, is that all? Good for you, yes.'

You're losing arguments with an imagined figment of your mother. This isn't good.

Back in reality, you've advanced ever so slightly, your spear hanging low in a two-handed grip, legs wide, keeping yourself just off the floor. You've at least managed to not circle him. You have a feeling he might have run if you started to treat him like prey.

You jab your spear forward, low and straight- Cliff slaps it away from himself, hopping sideways around it to counter- where he stutter-steps, leaping backwards as he realizes that being inside your spear leaves you still out of reach, and him well within range of your legs.

He lands lightly, taking another stance, and you sweep the spear around- his sword dips and catches it, but you hook his leg anyway, throwing him onto his back. He rolls sideways in a panic- You're on top of him in an instant, aiming the spear down, trying to pin him to the floor.

The adventurer manages to spin up to his feet, half crouched, bracing his sword with his free hand to stop the thrust you've thrown at him.

The correct response would have been to dodge, probably.

You catch his blade with the cross of your spear, making a mockery of his balance and his attempt to block at the same time- you follow through with the thrust as though he wasn't there, lifting him off his feet and shooting him out of the circle, where he skids to a stop, sprawling on his back in the sand.

Yeah, on second thought, you really have no idea how to take it easy on someone.
Mom has really done a number on your psyche.

So
seeing as we have a while before we evolve again
lets have knife fight about the evolution after that.
REQM hinted that 5 form evolutions would be mythical evolutions.
what do you think that means?
Strength so crazy that people make myths about us?
Resembling mythical creatures/gods?
what will Lyra end up as?

>Resembling mythical creatures/gods?
Judging by the fact that one of Jin's potential evolutions is a literal Phoenix, I'd say this. As for what exactly it would be, I dunno, but I guess "giant fucking spider" is on the list. I just want Lyra to be a regular fucking spider, not a giant one.
>>
>>36000264
God I want it so badly.

It'd look metal as fuck
>>
>>36000396
I share similar sentiments.
No need for all this legendary superqueenness.
>>

Actually it would look

The asura look only works from certain angles using physiology that just looks dumb if you look at it closely
>>

Metal is also a crystal, so it can double as our lord stone.
>>
>>36000395

I would LOVE Metal Spider.

Do you guys think we would be able to combine metal spiderbutt with forgetouch to shape our forelegs into right nasty blades?
>>
>>36000413

>>
>>36000439
Full out Asura's Wrath Lyra
When she gets combat rage-y her whole body turns cracked and magma, she sprouts a second pair of arms and wields unlimited weapons from molten steel
>>
So, looking at the pastebin, Jin's level 100.
>>
>>36000439
I disagree with your opinion.

>>36000469
I think we probably could already make some custom blades for our two forelimbs.
>>
>>36000469
all the legs might make it impossible to say.. walk in someones house.. or move properly. Blades sinking into the ground every step would be a pain in the ass.
>>
>>36000512
Yup, we just gotta wait till she sleeps. And since she pretty much spends much of the day doing that on our shell, maybe we might actually see what an evolution in progress looks like?
>>
>>36000485
I, too, would like to see a normalish sized Queen.
>>
>>36000584
I think we missed that goal by miles already. We are already huge and will still grow naturally regardless of our future evolutions.

Brutal Legend Metal Spider-Butt?

>>36000581
Nah, she'd be tucked away under our Skull and we might 'feel' her stirring in her sleep and see her emerge evolved...
>>
You know, I kind of find myself wondering if Adventurers (or maybe just this one and his friends) either don't really know much of anything about monster evolutions or if they simply haven't caught on to the fact that we've gone thorugh 2 Evolutions and gained special subtypes twice, as an Arachne which typically evolve slowly due to having stronger base stats.

I mean, we're n the same evolutionsary tier as an Ogre and come from a much stronger base.
Attempting to duel that in an up-front fight really isn't a bright idea.
>>
>>36000572

So what stops us from forgetouching them BACK into the default shape?

Fucking nothing, blades for battle, legs for walking.
>>
>>35998010

>>
>>36000629

>>
>>36000650
In battle you may still want your legs to.. function as legs. If the blade shit fucks up traction it's a bad idea. Heating them though... and becoming a walking molten metal inferno..

>>36000653
It's fucking adorable.
>>
>>36000674

The corpses of those assholes throwing metal balls and food at us, of course.
>>
>>36000648
Turns out fate has allowed them a situation where it IS a good idea to duel that, as it won't actually hurt them, and chances to practice fighting such things without getting hurt are rare.
>>
>>36000689

We already use our legs as weapons, we kinda fuck shit up with them.
>>
>>36000648
Arachne don't really leave the forest. So they have no idea how strong regular arachne are, let alone how strong a evolution of one is.
And he was just trying it out, you don't get the opportunity to fight a giant spider every day.

>>36000650
We could put some iron rings around our forelegs, we are strong enough that the weight doesn't bother us, and we could shape them into all sorts of useful tools and weapons when needed.
>>
Guys, if we want metal spiderbutt, we need to practice with metal more.

Like that anon suggested way back when, molten metal whips.

We can't pick up classes.
Also mage evolution a shit
>>
>>36000745

Lord evolutions are for Over-specialization.

We don't want that, and Mage evolutions are usually physically weaker than normal evolutions.

And how the hell would being made of steel feel unnatural? We are a giant spider who is capable of touching metal and turning it molten, there is nothing "natural" for you to base things off of.
>>
>>36000761
Personally, I'd rather go full Nanomachines Son! and become as ridiculously physically powerful as possible. Break mountains with her fists stronk.

More monstrous evolutions would not be my preferred path to advancement. Being made of pure fire, earth or steel would feel a little unnatural. That said, for my part I'm hoping for a lord type or a mage type half-evolution is next up to bat.

As for an end game, mythical spider motif, our evolution might involve a sort of always on, permanent fire ability that summons hovering orbs of molten rock/metal around us that can be converted into magma armor, weapons, projectiles, etc. In that sense, we would be like a magma kami spider, a master of versatility capable of doing all of the things to some degree (which seems to be what people are aiming for.

Alternately, we might consider picking up classes.
>>
>>36000817
Its obviously about mage evolutions for us. Sara is a actual magic specialist.
>>
Da fucks wrong with you guys? I'm just here for the head pat lewds
>>
>>36000817

Sara not a shit because Sara is a dedicated mage, who was always physically weaker and less capable of the physical side of things.

Mage-evolution for US would be a shit.
>>
>>36000783
Isn't a class in world for the most part just a job or at least a loose definition of affiliation/skill set? Pretty sure we could find gainful employment somewhere. If not lets go hang out with a circle of geomancers have them teach us their ways.
>>
>>36000837

There are no classes, it's a job system and we can't pick one up.

There is nothing "natural" to feel unnatural about, our legs are basically a step away from being molten rock anyway.

Mage doesn't fucking suit us because we will NEVER be as good as a REAL mage because we can't produce our own mana and would have to rely on stolen spells or mana batteries, which is a stupid fucking idea, and Lords are for over-specialization and are there to make monsters feel better about not becoming a better monster. because they focused too much on something.

Metalspiderbutt is best spiderbutt, shut up.
>>
>>36000808
Yeah, I would like that the most too. I don't want us to get too overloaded with special abilities, feels way too crowded.
We got pretty much all the special abilities we need, from here on, I would prefer to focus on physical power.
>>
>>36000238
Powers so crazy that reality bends and reforms actively to our desires. By simply existing we shape the world around us.
>>
>>36000863
Nah. Think of the world like a JRPG. We're a monster, so we get monster abilities and evolutions. Humans, Elves, etc. get classes instead of evolutions.
>>
>>36000900

>Sacrificing special abilities in a world where Gods DO exist.

I doubt physical might is going to do shit to a creature made entirely on smoke, anon.
>>
>>36000922
Then we just need something that lets us punch things made out of smoke. Problem solved.
>>
>>36000922
Punch it so hard the shockwave disperses it to the point it can't reform.
>>
>>36000844
>>36000850
To be fair, the guy you were quoting had deleted their original post, so I couldn't see what you were talking about.

>>36000922
They didn't say sacrifice the abilities, they just don't want to be oversaturated with special abilities. We have a pretty good set of special abilities right now, and I'm pretty sure we can unmagic the smoke thing or something.
>>
>>36000922
Trap it in a shell of magma.
>>
>>36000922
There're probably enchantments we can give our weapon that would help with that, just have to forge 10 different spears with different enchantments for every occasion
>>
>>36000922
>>36000979
>>36000988
yeah, we have MORE than enough special abilities to deal with most things. We don't need more.

Heck, we can both catch the thing in a silk balloon AND earthbend it captured. That's almost too many powers.
>>
>>36000894

I think REQM did away with the "you don't have mana" thing. At least we can now use earth and fire based mana without a battery by all accounts.

As for "unnatural", I mean that there are certain levels of divergence beyond which I will not find Lyra as interesting as a character because her human aspect will be all but gone.

Consider if she was remade entirely out of metal, including her soft, human half. Consider if she bled fire and cried pitch and her body was a molten monstrosity that could never be put out. Those are the things that "mythic evolutions" reflect for me, an intrinsic and permanent representation of the epitome of monstrous power. I like Lyra to be able to deal with people on a casual "human" level, and more monstrous divergence doesn't help with that.
>>
>>36000846
They're confused about what the future will hold. The only known evolution at this point is half-lord, we know that there are others but not what they are or how to get them.
>>
>>36001012
>At least we can now use earth and fire based mana without a battery by all accounts

Your stride makes it fairly easy to cross the room in seconds, looming over your latest victim like a harbinger of death. Your hair halos your face like a void as your lips form the words angels dread-

"Ah, are you okay?"

The adventurer holds up a hand, signalling his need for a second to respond as he puffs and wheezes, trying to get air in his lungs again. Around you, people laugh, money exchanges hands.

Another adventurer marches forwards, shooing you back and pulling Cliff up till he's sitting on the sand.
"C'mon ya wuss. Get some air in ya."

"I am sorry, yes."
Your downed opponent manages a nod, his breathing coming back under control, evening out.

Conversations swirl all around you.
"Didn't think the old bastard was serious-"
"I bloody told you idiots."
"-Right through the gods damned floor. Not even trying-"
"Hells, can you imagine getting hit-"
"-tear me right in half-"
"Jin's yapping about magic, too-"

You blush a bit. Being the conversation piece for a room of people isn't something you're used to.
Well, Jin-
No, bragging to kids isn't the same.

Having adults be wary of you is new.

One man, an hourglass in one hand and undoubtedly a big bag of money in the other raises his voice over the hubbub.
"Oi, anyone gonna take a shot?"

Silence.
Then an eruption of laughter. The big bearded guy is actually slapping his knee.
You had no idea people actually did that.

"Nope." "No." "Hahaha- gods you're not even joking-"
"I like my bits right where they are, yeah."
"Hells, I ain't gonna make any money like this-"
"You're an absolute bastard."
"Can't blame me for trying."

More laughter. You smile, and head for your friends. You don't think you'll be getting any more sparring in today.

That's not mana or magic.
That's the Earth/Fire control ability we've gained.
It keys off of stamina and is based around controlling the element in question as opposed to learning spells aligned with that element.

Under the assumption that we get up off our tremendous ass and do something in the next little while, my money is on:

Evolution: Reaper
Sub-type: Forgesworn, Molten, Guilded

A more purified version of our present form, with the shell taking on a pure black sheen. Metal tracery runs through the shell for a gold and silver on black aesthetic. When aggravated, an intensifying heat builds within the shell, causing the ceramic like carapace to glow a red or white hot. Tracery reforms to maximize strength of shell versus impact. Skull moves into subcarapace metal plating containing skull motif.

Leading into final evolution:
Legendary Spider: Heart of Earth and Fire
Appearance: Looks surprisingly close to a normal, if large arachne with precious metal tracery and gems in its shell. Extremely strong and durable. When aggravated, its full body begins to glow with a furious white heat. Earth and fire begin spontaneously activating in the vicinity. Not unheard of for it to encase its full body in steel, earth, or molten rock for added layers of protection.

Both of your friends are already starting to doze- leaning against each other to stay upright. They offer sleepy smiles as you move towards them- Jin even raises her wings, waiting to be picked up.

It occurs to you that they might be spoiled.

Regardless, you prop up Sheszka with a leg while you deposit Jin into her eye socket of choice, the little harpy cozying up as soon as her feet touch your shell, folding her wings and settling down in seconds.

You turn back to Sheszka- who has wrapped her arms around your leg in an approximation of a hug, slumping forwards and snapping back as she tries to stay awake. Her smile of droopy eyed gratitude brings a grin to your face, and she follows Jin's lead in curling up behind you.

You wave to the adventurers as you depart, and some of them even return it. Above, you walk eagerly through the guild, into the street and making a run (it's more of a lazy walk) for the river. The light is turning red along with the sky, giving the whole trip a slow, vacation type feeling. You pass more than a few families, headed back from laundry, or fishing, or whatever it is you do in a river in small towns.

The children clamour for a ride on your skull, but Jin isn't budging. Or possibly even concious, all things considered. She was awake for a long time, today.

You leave the crowd behind as the buildings open up, and head down the bank into the river.

It's a bit of a struggle to get everyone unclothed, but at least you don't have to convince Sheszka to get in the water. Appropriately attired for bathing, you drop yourself down, face downstream and think fire-y thoughts.
>>
>>36002085
It isn't long before the river that passes you by does so a great deal warmer than it was, and you start in on cleaning your friends. Sheszka is dropped in first, mildly awake as she is.

She sits, doglike, in the warm water, humming happily as you use an earthcrafted rock as an impromptu bucket, dumping warm water over her with one hand and holding her ears shut against the flow with the other. You run your fingers through her short fur, across the pads on the bottoms of her feet, cleaning between her wide toes and scrubbing her all over.

Satisfied that you've got her at least presentable, you let her step out of the river- where she staggers two steps forwards, bends over and shakes herself impossibly fast, sending droplets of water in every direction. She turns back to you, and stands at the edge of the water, rubbing her eyes. You pick her up and drop her back in her spot, and she lays down as best she can, falling asleep in an instant.

Jin struggles a bit when you pick her up, trying to keep contact with the warmth of your shell, but you manage to get her into the water in front of you all the same. She calms down as you start scrub her clean, even cracking an eye slowly, watching you work.

"Lyyyyra?"
"Yes?"
"Diiiiid I.... Did I do good?"
"Of course."

She stops a moment, blinking slowly as she contemplates that, and you dump another bucket of water over her head.
"Reeeally?"
"Yes, Jinni."
You lean forwards, wrapping your arms around the drowsy harpy, giving her a warm hug.
"You did very good, yes? You're strong, Jinni."
She smiles back at you, her one open eye slowly sliding shut as she yawns.
>>
>>36002108
"Thaaaank you, Lyra. For beeeing, for friend."

You pick her up, drying her as best you can, and she curls up in your arms, folding into a compact ball of feathers that you easily fit into the slot on your back.

With only yourself left to take care of, you simply lean into the water, letting the river run over you, scrubbing until you feel clean, and maybe a little raw.

You make your way to the bank, stopping a second to dress your unresisting friends, and throwing a blanket over them before you head straight for Jin's house.

So wait, when you ask for 1d100, are you now going to be taking all 3 rolls rather than the highest?
>>
>>36002383
>>36002386
>>36002402
we are TERRIBLE at staying up
>>
>>36002456
Depends on what we roll for.
>>
>>36002456
No, I just show which dice made it.
>>
>>36002543
I'm guessing it's for staying awake, which would be at a hard difficulty, with no DC lowering due to not having a skill rank in Waiting For Santa and DC increased due to cute girls sleeping on top of us and being so cuddly and tempting.
>>
>>36002510

So, does that mean of the three, only the 62 counts? Or do you mean that all three's cumulative value is our result?
>>
>>36002510
To clarify:
Except for d10, it'll always be best of 3.

In this case, you were rolling to stay awake, and scored a 62

I wonder if we should use our past life pop-culture knowledge to tell the village kids some fictional stories.
>Long ago in a distant land, I, Aku...
>>
You're too tired to knock.
You know that really isn't an excuse for abandoning manners, but you just wanna sit down and stop moving. It's been a long day.

Sefi looks up alongside her mother as you enter the cabin- Jin's sister is curled on the bed on one side, and her mother is folded up on he other.
"Lyra. Had a good day, did you?"
You smile tiredly.
"A busy day, yes."

The older harpy ruffles her feathers, while Sefi settle back down, tucking her head beneath a wing.
"Fun, was it?"
"It turns out that some adventurers think that people exaggerate how strong arachne are."
"Oh dear."
"Yes."

She cocks her head to the side, reminding you- They are owl harpies.
"Noone was hurt?"
"Nothing permanent. I had a spar, and he didn't want to wear armour to start."
"And you... 'convinced' him?"
"I put my arm through the floor."

She chuckles, muffling the sound with one wing.
"They'll get over it, yes. Noone bounces back faster than an adventurer. Bravery or idiocy, I'm not sure."
"That's good, yes. Um. I had a question."
"Mhmmm?"

Your hands reach for the little pouch, smoothing over the warm silk.
"Jin gave me a feather, yes? When we met."
"I remember, little one."

You forge on as the motherly bird smiles.
"Mom... She told me a few meanings. Um. But she said how I keep it is important?"
"It is, yes."
"Can you tell me?"
>>
>>36003384
I don't think she has all the same pop culture knowledge we have.

Lia wiggles a bit, sitting up straighter as you sprawl further over the floor.
"Meanings... Well, That is Jin's to know. But for keeping it- Displaying it shows pride in the relationship. Keeping it close shows that it is important. Wearing it in your hair is declaration that you feel the same, and keeping it over your heart means that you will hold it forever."

You're lying down, propping your head up on your folded arms, watching her speak.
"Mnm. What if I want to show more than one of those?"
"Keeping it over your heart is usually the most important. Showing it or not doesn't really matter, yes? Putting it in your hair is mostly to declare love. It is the wrong kind of feather for that, though."
"Yes. From her neck."
"Dedication, devotion, a life debt. A follower. You will not ever be rid of her, yes?"

She smiles down at you, the warm look of a mother pleased with her children.
"I do not think I want to be, yes."

"Good night, Lyra."
"Good night."

You lie on the floor, for a while, thinking. About Jin and Sheszka, and what you want to do.
It could be anything. You can do whatever you want, can't you? Mom would be right there. Your friends, your family, would be right there. You smile, even while tears gather in your eyes.
This is the kind of happiness you never thought you'd have.

You watch your friends sleep, for a while. Smoothing their hair, watching smiles curl across their faces at your touch, even in rest. This. This is something special, something worthwhile.

You watch them while your eyes droop, while you yawn and your vision blurs, while the moon rises and the stars twinkle above. Your eyes slowly drawing to a close while as you lay back down. It almost looks like Jin is starting to glow....

Don't suppose there's some way to display it on our breastplate without it getting damaged?
>>
>>36003458
dangit lyra, don't go to sleep just as the evolution happens.
I mean, you might have to press B!
>>
>>36003522
We could just make it into a necklace, have the string long enough to hang over her heart
>>
>>36003522
We could probably put it into some glass container we meld to our plate? As long as it is outside the plate it wouldn't be dangerous for us, and it would make it reasonably safe.
>>
>>36003522
I prefer making some necklace out of it we can wear inside the armor. Makes it safe, and we carry it close to our heart.
>>
>>36003618
Hm, probably the best option: not exactly publicly displayed, but concessions can be made for adventuring, and we can wear it outside our clothes when not raiding dungeons.
>>
>>36003528

I always wonder what pressing B entailed. Does the trainer just run up to the pokemon and smack it with a rolled up newspaper?

> "No, bad Pidgey! It stays small and adorable or I hates it forever!"
Of course, more sadistic trainers might threaten it with talk of voices and the dark clutches of the PC.

Lyra:
Begin the master plan to systemically coat the town in webs.

Do it now, while they slumber! They'll thank you later!
>>
>>36003442
Plenty of premises to try. We should have enough stories for years.
>But then, everything changed when the fire nation attacked.
>>
>>36003458
So monsters evolve like Pokemon. Huh.
>>
>>36003716

I don't know about coating the town, but we really should make new, fire resistant garments for our allies. The ask page says that our silk is now more flame retardant, so it should definitely be a project to go ahead and upgrade. Got prepare for our first dragon fight, after all.
>>
>>36003768
Our garments, every wall in town, all the flags, everything.

A feature on the Pokedex that shoots an evolution canceling beam I think. But your idea is more entertaining.
>>
>>36003522
we should keep it on a necklace so that it falls roughly on our heard and put a decorative gold feather on our breastplate at the same spot
>>
I'm back and writing, you can feel free to start the drumroll.
>>
>>36003522
I don't think we have to. Mom wears her wedding ring on a necklace under her armor, and that's even more significant than this.

Encasing the feather in amber is probably the best we could do for it. Aside from giving a perfect view of the undamaged feather when done correctly, the result is radiant, somewhere between fire and the glow of the sun.
>>
"Lyra! Lyra!"

You crack an eye, watching the wall above you, the placement of the sun against the boards.
It sounds like Jin.
But Jin won't be up for hours.

Ergo, you're dreaming.
You let your eyes drop closed again, snuggling further into a mass of blankets, basking in the slow heat of the morning.

"Nnnnnnnn! Lyyyyyyra!"
Okay.
Something is jumping up and down on your back, and this is not at all conducive to sleep.

You groggily push your self onto your elbows, rubbing at your eyes- and the weight transfers from your back to your shoulders, while your vision fills with upside down harpy.

"Lyra! Look! Look at me, yes!"
"Nmnmn- Yer above me-"

The harpy is over you in a flash wings flapping as she spins herself to face you, dropping onto your outstretched hands.
With your attention on her, she proudly splays her wings, thrusting her chest forward, inflating with importance.

Your friend has been bleached- Her feathers are shock white. Until the tips, at least. The edges fade into a dark blue, the spotted pattern barely visible among the dusky blue edges. Her hair is a black blue, falling to her shoulders in a messy pile, pure white tufts sticking up from the mass.

"Look!"

You grin up at the harpy, pushing yourself up and dropping her to her bottom before you.
"You grew!"
"I grew!"
"Look at you!"
"Yes! Yes!"
"Hahaha!"

You seize the excited bird with a fierce hug, and she squeezes back against you, nuzzling into your neck and hair, hear tufts tickling at your ear.
"Look at you, Jinni! You're even stronger now, yes!"
She nods, her whole body twisting with the movement, so excited that she's nearly vibrating in your hands.

The sunrise catches her smile, her feathers, and she looks brilliant in the morning light, glowing in the dawn.
"Lyra! Thank you!"

REQM, you really are trying to make them lesbilewds by the hand of fate aren't you?
>>
>>36004376

Speaking of smiles, do harpies have beaks or humanoid mouths? If there is no consistency there, what does Jin's family have? Granted her sister is a king fisher, I imagine at least she has a beak.

But comets aren't bound to the earth. Quite the opposite actually. We need to get her to evolve into something moon or sun based.
>>

Strar powers, eh? So Jins 'thing' is even better now?
>>
>>36004459

Sleeping with fire [10/5]
Rise and Shine [10/5]
Star Magic [5/5]
Pigs are Delicious [1/5]
Five More Minutes Mom [20/5]
Five More Minutes Lyra [15/5]
Not Obsessed! [10/5]
>>
>>36004540

You forgot to mention

>L-Lyra~ Not t-there!~
>>
>>36004580

>>
>>36004537

>>36004540

>>36004505
It does indeed, thank god.

>>36004499
Was there every any doubt?
>>
>>36004644
Why are our friends so spoiled?

Can we whip them into shape?
>>
>>36004682
Because they are too cute. And we do whip them into shape. Then proceed to spoil them. It's the Circle of Headpats.
>>
>>36004682
Because we SPOIL them too much.
We should really stop that.
>>
>>36004682
It's the headpats, man. Shit's addictive, for both sides.
>>
>>36004682

They spoil us too anon.

Like how they won't let us sully our hands by holding our food, they feed us, we feed them, we give them headpats, they'll tear anyone who disrupts said headpats apart.

Soon, we shall tell them that if they do something, they shall receive the headpats.
>>
A handy one step guide for how to stop the spoiling:
No more head pats.
>>
>>36004829
Can't do that, Lyra would be just as devewstated.
>>
>>36004740
"Jin, my oldest and dearest friend. The King of the odious barbarians of the Iron Mountains threaten war against our subjects. He must be stopped, yes."
"It will be done, Lyra. Please reward me when I return, yes."
"... Really? Jin, you're not a month old anymore, you really don't need headpa-"
"You will pat my head, Lyra. We will enjoy it, yes. This will be done."
"Fine. Spoiled harpy."
"And also can you-"
"You can feed yourself, you lazy bird."
>>
And now you're imagining Jin and Sheszka bartering with Lyra- They'll help hunt, stay awake, whatever- as long as their headpat quota is met.
>>
>>36004885
I'm imagining a nervous little moth being afraid. Her parents always warned her not to trust people dealing in headpats. But her Jin was always really trustworthy, and a single pat couldn't hurt, right?

A week later she's an addict. She needs headpats to function.
>>
>>36004880
>The Great Matron: You, young wolf! What is the best in life?
>Shezdan: the open woods, quick feet, sharp claws, and the wind in your fur.
>Matron: WRONG
>Matron: My queen! What is best in life?
>Lyra: Crit your enemies. See your exp driven to a new level. Give headpats to your women.
>Matron: That is good! That is good.
>>
>>36005025
Soon, head pats won't be enough. She'll go for harder highs such as chin rubbings and ear scratchings, and before long she'll be in a spider den getting belly rubs without a care in the world. It is a slippery slope, indeed.
>>
>>36005074

Slippery when wet.
>>
>>36005074
What about chestrubs?
>>
>>36005243
The War on Headpats was waged when that started hitting the streets.
>>
>>36005426

That war lasted less than a day and was a massive failure.

Headpats conquered the world shortly after.
>>
>>36005449
They later made headpats legal, albeit regulated and taxed. This put many a coin in the Queen's coffer.
