Welcome back to Land of the Gods! In our last thread, we:

decided we are Virus, the First Vine and God of Art
met our charmingly insane high priest Kalat
Met all of our worshippers
burned a guy's balls off with steaming hot wine
Wheeled and dealed with our neighboring gods
Decided to back Klabat against any aggression by Kondar
Convinced Reach to join us
Determined Odon is a bitch
Discovered that our hot shit army is actually a handful of idiots led by our charmingly insane high priest
And finished up with introductions.

Today, we're going to focus on:

>War. Kondar's stockpiling armor, Klabat's scared, Reah's picking a fight--probably with Odon, and Anhur's still a crazy bastard who wants to eat us all. By the way, did I mention that killing a god gives you a moment of omnipotence?
>Diplomacy. We just got ourselves into some heavy shit yesterday. We've already taken sides with Reah against Odon and Klabat against Kondar. We still haven't talked to 5 of the other 8 gods. What other options are out there?
>Internal Growth. If we want to prepare for future war, we need to get our shit together at home. We've taken the first steps towards improving our army, but we still need to pick its new general. We haven't heard reports from any of our villages yet, and we still need to talk trade.
>Something else?

Newcomers are very welcome. I'm happy to answer questions as we go along.

1) *********NEXT GAME AT: Maybe Wednesday, maybe Friday.**************

2) Character info pastebin will go here as needed

3) Twitter @landofthegodsQ
I will keep this updated with times for the next game, and I'll answer dms here, too.

4) email landofthegodsquest@gmail.com
I'll try to answer emails as well.

5) Choices offered are almost always suggestions. You can certainly suggest other alternatives I haven't listed.

6) While I am keeping track of stats behind the scenes and doing dice rolls and whatnot, my goal is for you to never have to think about the mechanics of things. Make your choices, play the game.

7) Plot armor is nonexistent. What happens, happens.

8) This is not a smut quest. THIS IS NOT A SMUT QUEST. I truly have nothing against smut quests, but this is not one of them. That's not to say that sex doesn't exist or won't be acknowledged as is story appropriate, but it won't be the focus and it won't be gratuitous.

I feel like this is the most pressing, not to mention we need to build more smithys, glass works, ect ect so that when we need to use them for state matters order from the nobles and such can still go through.

>Minor Diplomacy
This is taking a bit of a backseat in favor of getting our shit together at home. We thrive on trade so keeping our neighbors happy is important, and settleing this dispute between Odon and Reach is at the top of our list I imagine. It might lead to conflict with Odon, but this seems inevitable. We need to put down concreate shipping and trade agreements between them for the prosperity of us all.

If you want to stand any chance against your enemies, you'll need the support of your City. You need Belief to power your miracles and Sacrifice and Tribute to magnify them.

You ask Kalat where most of your tribute is coming from.

"Gold, Lord. Your merchants bring back mountains of it! Well, hills, really. Molehills? Your artists, too. Every work they create reflects your genius. Your entire City feeds you, Most Drunkest One. Every fresco, every carving, and every pillar erected in your name adds to your strength. If you want to get stronger, work on your erections!"

"Any other sources of strength?"

"Sacrifices, of course. Farmers' livestock, farmers' daughters, farmers! Drown them in a vat of wine and drink them up!"

"I'd rather not drink my own citizens if I don't have to. Any other sources?"

"Slaves, I suppose. Bandits we catch on the road? Or a neighbor's villagers, yes yes yes!"

"What about Belief. How can I get more Belief?"

"Belief flows from your worshippers through prayer, Lord. More worshippers, more juice!"

"Any other problems I should know about?"

"Well, you still need to pick a new general, and we still haven't heard from any of the villages. Oh, and Reah left a message. Wants to talk to you."

Pick two:

>Focus on improving Tribute
>Focus on finding a source of Sacrifices
>Focus on improving Belief
>Pick a new general
>Check on your villages
>Call Reah back
>>
>>36086244
Maybe work on creating a new kind of wine. Something that, instead of making one sluggish, increases one's vigor? Something that will allow people to get done the shit they're supposed to get done?

Let's make the world's first energy drink

Your priests are uniquely suited to crafting new varieties of wine. It may take a while, depending on what you're trying to accomplish. Changing wine to an energy drink might take a serious Miracle on your part, though. That's basically changing wine's entire nature. That would take a ton of Belief and a ton of time just to try.

Not saying no, just saying that you'd have to devote most of your resources to the task.
>>

>Call Reah back
Let's check up on her, we can get that done fast.
>Check on your villages

>Pick a new general
Dependant on the above, we need someone to whip our troops into shape

>Focus on improving Tribute
After all that's all said and done we should focus on building up our trade and repairing rebuilding the city's disrepair.
>>
>>36086244
Let's improve belief.

How about spin an offer of having an "Afterlife" if you drown yourself (or have someone else drown you) in a vat of wine and send it to us?
>>
>>36086475
Human sacrifices are nice boost but the only problem is the fact that our domain is art and partying. We inspire no fear into our believers so excessive human sacrifices may change their attitude even if they are voluntary.
>>
>>36086475
So this is gonna get tricky. You ask Kalat about the people's belief in the Afterlife.

"After Life, Lord? You mean Death!"

"No, I mean what happens when you die?"

"Nothing! That's what's so amazing!" Kalat giggles at the thought.

"Fine. What do you tell the people when they ask?"

"When they ask what?"

"About the Afterlife?"

"Are you drunk, Lord? Well, I know you ARE, but are you currently drunk?"

Hrmm. As far as you know of, there is no Afterlife. You certainly didn't go to any when you died. You could start the belief that there's an Afterlife, but it would be difficult for people to believe at first. And Naxos would probably be PISSED.

Update still in progress.

So the Gods have no material bodies? They are simply... things?
>>
>Focus on finding a source of Sacrifices
Sacrifices. A Sacrifice has two requirements: 1) It must be a thinking being. Not necessarily a genius, or even sentient, but it must have thoughts, however small. 2) It must be irrevocably destroyed in the Sacrifice. When this occurs, its soul joins to yours.

So where can you find some souls? Livestock are the most common. You could always raise a collection from your farmers. Cons would be upsetting them if you took too much and the loss of food, wool, leather, etc.

Then there's people. Human sacrifice is completely accepted among the people of Punt, although every City varies in the practice. None would question your right to accept human sacrifice. One option would be the sacrifice of "undesirables." You could purchase slaves for sacrifice--both Reah and Klabat sell some. Or, you could send your army out to capture bandits along the roads. You could ask your people for voluntary sacrifice. Maybe make it the highlight of a yearly or seasonal festival? Or, you could make it mandatory. How would you pick sacrifices?

Pick at least one option, and give your opinion on how you might implement it. We can talk it out and come to a decision about what to do.

>Raise an annual livestock collection from the farmers. How much?
>Purchase slaves for sacrifice.
>Send the army out to capture bandits.
>Voluntary sacrifices.
>Mandatory sacrifices.
>No change in sacrifices.
>>
>>36086801
>Send the army out to capture bandits.
This, but emphasis on REMOVING bandits rather than gaining them for sacrifice, bandits aren't good for us at all.
>Voluntary sacrifices.

And, could we do >>36086641
>>36086475
as well?
>>
>>36086801
Can we make a sacrificial pool in which anyone who drowns themselves in it has such an intense, pleasurable experience they might choose that as the preferred method of dying? I'd be willing to spend a miracle on 'A humane way of letting people sacrifice themselves'.
>>
>>36086794
Yes and no. Any god can choose to appear however they want. We've already seen Reah as a mix between a pale woman with blue eyes and a smooth stretch of water. But they originated as natural phenomena, yes.

I've described Virus as a man for the sake of easy interaction with his worshippers, but if you all want to appear as something else, feel free to suggest a new form. You could easily and effortlessly turn into a grapevine, cluster of grapes, or wine. You can easily and effortlessly maintain your form as a human. Switching to more exotic forms, say for combat or something, might require expending Belief.

>>36086849
I'll put the Afterlife to a vote at the next update.

>Can we make a sacrificial pool in which anyone who drowns themselves in it has such an intense, pleasurable experience they might choose that as the preferred method of dying? I'd be willing to spend a miracle on 'A humane way of letting people sacrifice themselves'.

You can't see any immediate problem with the suggestion. A Sacrifice must be irrevocably destroyed, so you couldn't place an actively dying person into the pool and expect to get anything out. They're already destroying themselves. But the sick or infirm might work. You're not quite sure.

You hate to admit it, but Naxos might now more about this than you.
>>
>>36086801
>Send the army out to capture bandits.
This may be as well useful to show our worshippers that crime will not be tolerated in my presence.
>Voluntary sacrifices
Use propaganda to convince followers that sacrificing for my sake is a huge honor, and that if they do so, their souls will live forever within my conscience.
>>
>>36086917
Let's call him up!

Also, it's not necessarily for the sick/infirm, but for an honor thing. If someone wants to be sacrificed, we could have a weekly celebration thing, honoring those who are giving up their lives, giving them the best last week ever, all culminating in the intense experience of the sacrificial pool.
>>
>>36086917
>>36087025
I vote for summoning up Naxos. The weekly celebration thing seems like a good idea, but it may take too much time.

I also vote for the use of criminals as sacrifice.
>>
>>36086641
They become part of us like we become part of the dirt, but sure, that's an afterlife in a philosophical sense.

After pondering a while, you gather your priests together. You explain your plan to create a great pool within the Temple. Citizens may commit the ultimate act of love and devotion to you by entering the pool before their natural death. There, they will experience orgasmic drunken pleasure as they merge with their God.

You call it: Soylent Purple.

You also call up your Temple Guard and instruct them to patrol the caravan routes around your City for bandits. They will attempt to capture as many alive as possible to be brought back to the City to be sacrificed.

3 separate votes:

>Do we call up Naxos to discuss our plan?

>Do we imply to our people that their exists an Afterlife with you if they sacrifice themselves?

Another way I thought to get sacrifices, we can hold an exclusive party in the temple every week or so. You get in by buying a lottery ticket cheap enough that anyone can afford it. The 'winners' of the lottery are treated as guests of honor and sacrificed as the crescendo of the party.

The idea is to make the sacrifices enviable giving more incentive to volunteer.
>>
>>36087421
Sounds like something that would be popular among the common folk. 1 week of the high life, then you die in service to your god.

Before you finalize your plan, you tell Kalat to prepare the altar again.

A swirling wind arises from a pile of crushed grapes. It forms into a frail old man in a grey cloak. His eyes are milky white, but they still turn to focus on you.

"Virus." He lingers on the word for a long time before continuing. A small smile parts his lips. "I haven't seen you in many years."

"Naxos. I've been pondering a question, and I believe you might know the answer better than I."

"Question? I will listen, but I do not promise an answer."

"What would happen if you tried to sacrifice a dying person? Or just a very sick person?"

"Have you ever tried?"

"It's possible I have, but I do not remember."

"I see. I will answer your question if you agree to answer one of my own, truthfully. Do you agree?"

"Don't you think that would depend on the question? You already know mine, but I don't know yours."

"Fair. Do you intend to sacrifice nearly every person as they near death?

****Fucking tie votes again****

>NO to Afterlife implications.

>6 month Temple guard deployment.

>"I was considering it, but I would not wish to alienate you."

You hear the sound of gravel grinding underfoot. You realize Naxos is laughing. "You are wise to consult the god of Death before meddling in my domain."

"Let me be perfectly clear. Make no attempt to avert Death through Sacrifice. Do not substitute one for the other. If you do so, I will know, and you will know my anger."

"Now, in answer to your question, yes, it would work. So long as their life remains in their body and their head is clear, a sick Sacrifice counts just the same. As the mind fails, so would the strength of the Sacrifice. The retarded, the demented, and the comatose--these are less valuable to you."

"I have another question."

More gravel. "Ask away, bold one."

"What are your thoughts on the Afterlife? What would you tell your people?"

Naxos' brow furrows. "You are asking questions beyond your ability to understand. That is what I say to you, and that is what you should say to your people. Now quit bothering me with your inanity!"

He disappears in a cloud of dust.

Decision time:

>Yes/No: Institute Miracle Soylent Purple? (voluntary sacrifice of the sick. Will piss off Naxos, but provide significant returns of Sacrifice. Costs a significant amount of Belief.)

>Yes/No: Institute the Lucky Lottery? (voluntary sacrifice, making it enviable for all. Costs a small amount of Belief to make party truly magical.)

I have a suggestion for the lottery.

We sell 10-20 tickets, and offer inside the temple divine pleasures that no man will ever taste outside the place. Those will last for a week. At the end of said time, half of the buyers will be randomly picked, and the rest of them will have to join our divine guard, undergoing military training.
>>
-3 for Soylent Purple. +4 for lottery.

>>36088643
Yes. More thoughts = better sacrifice. That counts for people, too. A priest or well-educated noble is more valuable than a commoner or bandit.
>You return to your priests to inform them of the change in plans. You will be holding a weekly lottery instead, where 3 lucky winners shall be chosen to spend every evening partying with you long into the night. At the end of the week the 3 will drink themselves to death in a public revelry, falling asleep to join with you.
>You expend a small amount of Belief preparing the finest decorations and wine for the shindig. You summon it up within you, just a fistful, and fling it into the air like a pile of confetti. It rains down as party streamers, elegant tapestries, and jets of wine. You can feel a little hole within you where it used to be.

Kalat provides fresh grapes for your Altar, and Reah returns again.

"Virus, I just wanted to let you know that the first ships are making their way up the river to you now. Nothing worrisome, just some trade with our mutual friend Klabat."

"Thanks for the heads up."

>>36088740
Let's start with just the lottery. Getting more temple recruits is a separate problem that we can totally address at a different time.

That evening, your guards return with your gift. A young woman, not older than 20, is brought before you. Her skin is pale, and her hair is orange! She wears leather clothing embroidered with large animal teeth of unknown kind. Her face is painted in geometric blue designs.

One of the guardsman informs you that she is your gift, according to the traders on the boats. "Apparently a fine artist back in, well, wherever she's from."

"Amo te a wo? Kon se qualesti?"

"Yeah, she's been speaking gibberish like that the whole time."

You step forward and place your hand on her head. She recoils briefly, but stays standing in place. Extending your fingers, you feel inside her head. You can notice some fear, but also an intense curiosity within. Her thoughts are unreadable like the others. Strange symbols float into view, but you cannot interpret them.

Kalat dances around you two. "What shall we do with her, Lord?"

>Suggestions?
>Take her to the artists, and let her practice with them.
>Keep her here in the temple, and have one of the priests teach her our language.

You are the god of Wine and Art. You pause to ponder the possibilities. You suppose you could share in the common language of drunkenness. Problem is, the language of drunkenness isn't really good at transmitting concepts beyond "You. YOU! You're my best bro. MY BEST BRO."

You decide to try Art instead.
>Take her to the artists, and let her practice with them.

Your priests escort her away to meet the other artists in residence. You do hope that she fits in. You order for a wide array of tools, paints, brushes, instruments, and materials be brought to her. Kalat promises to check up on her regularly.

>Pick a new general

You call up Kalat for a talk.

"Listen, Kalat, I know that you've been in charge of the Temple Guard for a while now, but I feel like your... talents could be better used elsewhere."

"What talents, Lord? My charm?"

"Your... yes, your charm. I just can't have such a charming general. It's messing with the soldiers."

"I completely understand, sir. I'll fire myself right away!" Kalat scurries away, slapping himself repeatedly.

Well, that went better than expected.

You consider your options.

>Promote the most talented member of the Temple Guard to the position. (How will you assess talent?)
>Choose the librarian who's spent the most time reading past battles and tactics. He may not be physically capable, but his mind will be sharp.
>Ask Joshua to take the position. He's a fearsome warrior and very experienced. He'd have to stop leading your caravans, though.
>Ask Nazar to take the position. As a noble, he's well-educated, and you know he's fiercely loyal. He may not be a particularly skilled warrior or general, though.
>Rehire Kalat. He'll be thrilled! Hell, fire and rehire him every week. He'll get a kick out of it.

None of them are ideal, but a man that's trained with them to inspire respect is a great place to start.

We'll have the librarian test them on how they would handle various tactical situations, the ones he deems competent will pass. Then we'll interview our guard and see who among the candidates is popular and can handle a leadership position. Finally, the general will be chosen in a tournament like is being discussed.

We need someone well rounded more then anything.

If we can make a pool that causes orgasmic drunken pleasure easily. Why not? We shall add god of furries onto our name!

Find me a werewolf. Seriously. If Joshua or the Temple Guard or Reah or whoever can find a werewolf, go for it.

I'm having a hard time counting votes here. I see 3 for librarian, 2 for promotion, and 3 other posts talking about the promotion. I'm only counting the answer choices in green.

I'll wait a couple more minutes, then writing.

I don't think we should waste time and resources in a tournment. We should focus on what matters: conquest.

I say we choose Nazar as our general and train him in combat, and keep the librarian as a counselor.

Is that why Eschar doesn't let anyone into her forest? Is it full of werewolves, elves and fae?
>>
>>36089790

Nobody knows. Anyone who enters has never come out. We know very little about her forest. There have been sparse records of communication by leaving gifts or symbols out at the edge of the forest, only for them to be replaced by Eschar's offerings overnight.

I'm hoping the tournament will soften the idea of war for everyone, maybe make it seem like a positive thing if the general gets popular for winning. Our people are fickle and I'm afraid belief will take a big hit if we do anything that seems drastic.

****Another tie.

>Promote one of the members of the Temple Guard. The head librarian shall be his tutor and primary advisor.
>how about host a tounament! Have a grand festival around it!
>That is a great idea! Do the full course with a grand melee, combat on horses, werestling and all the other things.

"It's the First SemiBiAnnual Guard Games! Our City's Finest Soliders will be tried by seven fierce contests:

Wrestling!
Mounted combat!
Competitive drinking!
Hand to hand war-gaming!
Rule-lawyering!
Golf!

And as the grand finale--the no-holds-barred battle royale!

I'm Kalat, your announcer, commentator, and friend. Now, ladies and gentlemen,

LET'S GET READY TO... D-D-DUEL!"

Well, Kalat's commentary wasn't exactly accurate, but as the week passed on, your people certainly found it entertaining.

Several early favorites came out of the wrestling matches, but as the days passed on, it was clear that few had the tactical sense required to best the head librarian at even the simplest war games. Eventually, Merodak, one of the older sergeants, had his turn. It took over 10 hours, but he finally managed to corner the librarian's horseman on the 1531st turn. He went on to distinguish himself in the battle royale by gathering together a small team of allies, further earning the crowd's respect by refusing to turn on them after everyone else was dispatched.

You had your man. After another victory feast, he and the head librarian retreated deep into the archives to discuss tactics alone.

Well, good. What about the foreign artist girl? After those weeks, did she show any sign of development?
>>

It's only been about one week since you met her. Kalat reports that she's dabbled with some of the tools, but none have really captured her interest. She was most interested with some of the thicker canvas you offered. Your priests are working on finding the right material for her. The sketches she's made seem to be of good quality. The artists agree that there's some sort of talent there, at least.

Your villages occupy an awkward position in society. Nominally part of your domain, without an Altar present, you are unable to physically visit them. Villagers are expected to worship you with the same devotion as your citizens without ever seeing you present. Many find it difficult.

Villages at the edge of borders between Cities often become a point of contention. Village raids between neighbors are common, and aren't considered cause for war by themselves.

You hold 5 villages: Nearhome, Two Forks, Narrow Bend, Delta, and Bridgetown. Each holds 100-200 people, mostly farmers and ranchers. The village mayor is usually able to read and write and sends regular letters to the temple priests. The priests usually visit seasonally and lead prayer around a small shrine.

Bridgetown, as mentioned before, is of greater strategic importance. It holds command over the only nearby bridge over the river Odon. It boasts a whopping 500 people, including some fishermen and a few craftsmen who maintain the bridge. When ships need to pass, workers haul ropes on pulleys which raise each side of the bridge.

If you desired, you could improve the villages by building an Altar in each one. This would allow you to manifest yourself physically there. The costs would include a good deal of high quality stone, a small amount of Belief for each Altar, and a dedicated priest to tend to the altar daily. Carving the Altar would probably take your craftsmen a month for each.

Travelling from Altar to Altar requires a lengthy, day-long ritual during which you gradually fade from the first Altar and reappear at the second.

You could also spend resources improving the road network connecting the villages and the City. This would allow easier travel for your armies, messengers, traders, and visitors. It would require roughly a year of work per village done. While commoners are working on the roads, you incur a small but significant risk of losing a portion of your yearly grape harvest due to lack of labor.

Finally, you could have your remaining Temple Guard carry your travelling Altar around to each village. It would take a little over a day's march per village. You could complete the entire tour in about 1 week. Making an actual visit might improve their Belief. While away from the city, you would not be able to easily administer its affairs or defend it, should it be attacked, until the transference ritual is complete.

What is your plan for your villages?

>Do you want to build any Altars? How many, where?
>Do you want to build any roads? How many, where?
>Do you want to visit any villages? How many, where?

Say what you want. For ease of voting, here are some *suggested* possibilities.
>No investment for now.
>Visit all the villages. No other investments.
>Bridgetown investment only. Road + altar.
>Altars in all villages.
>Altars and roads in all villages.

Bridgetown and Two forks

Install alter in Bridgetown while we're at it.

may we have a map of our villages, so it would be easier to visualize what we are doing?
>>
>>36090786
Visit all the villages, altars in all the villages, roads only in Bridgetown for now.
>>
>>36090786
I would say improve the road between our Virus and Bridgeport and build an alter there. Do a visiting tour of all our villages.

It's shit, but I whipped this up just for you.
BTW, this is the last vote for the evening. I'm exhausted, and I have work in 7 hours. I'm planning on running again later this week, either Friday night or Saturday day. You can check @landofthegodsQ on Twitter for updates.

I'll be around for a little while longer to check on the vote and answer questions. Feedback is appreciated! You can also dm me on Twitter or email me at landofthegodsquest@gmail.com
