Welcome to Banished Quest!
You take the role of a young mage labeled a criminal by his people and cast out into the wider world. In the last thread you ate lamb skewers and finally got that meditation session you were owed out of Sister Kaur.

For having just meditated, you feel surprisingly worn out. Sure your vys reserves are full, but physically you're exhausted. Your breath comes out ragged and you ache from head to toe. You didn't really think that just going through forms was all that taxing physically, but you suppose you've been going through the same forms over and over again for several hours now. It would wear down on anyone, right?

You stretch, wincing as your muscles complain. Darzi and Kaur seem to finally notice you've withdrawn from your trance. Darzi is the first to speak. “Looking a little flushed, Mik. You feeling okay? Sore?” You can't help but feel that her tone is the slightest bit mocking; the shit-eating grin on her face doesn't help much. You shoot her a glare and use just a touch of water magic to alleviate the pain in your limbs, though you still feel a tad weak.

Kaur chimes in, she seems considerably more polite. “It's been about six hours since we started-” Gods above, that long? You weren't even particularly low on vys, so far as you recall. No wonder you're sore, that's a damned long time to be going through forms. “-so we've missed lunch. If you'd like, I could probably find someone to fix us something. We could also head down into town and see about scrounging something up, if you'd like.”

Darzi shrugs. “I'm really fine with whatever we choose to do, I'm not all that hungry if I'm being honest.” How can she not be hungry after six hours of running through forms, on top of exercising beforehand? If nothing else, Striking Monkey ought to leave anyone out of breath. You might not be the most in shape compared to some but shadowboxing for hours on end is exhausting no matter how you cut it.

Jealousy aside, you're starving. However, you've also got a fair bit you still wished to accomplish today, and you could always simply wait until dinner was served or snack on the various rations you've got with you.

>Head down to the Inn and see about getting something to eat.

also helping Aziz study or prepair is important right now, not saying we should reveil anything sensitive (like enchaning or the Varvars chest) but inviting him to meditation sessions with us wouldn't hurt. So doing kaurs meditation We would be training our fighting style along with w.e else we were meditating for?
Say meditating on nature while shadow boxing?
>>
You shake your head, solemnly. “I'm afraid I can't join you, I've got a backlog of books I need to read and I really ought to get started on them. However, if one of you might bring me a hot meal...” You trail off, leaving your request unsaid.

Kaur frowns. “Do I look like a serving woman? You can fetch your own food, if all you intend to do is hole away in your room and read.” It almost seems as if she has a distaste for the very concept of cracking over a book, judging by the way she practically spits out the word. It strikes you as intensely odd, coming from someone who intends to attempt to reach Grandmastery of an element soon. You've never met a true Vatis who wasn't a bookworm.

Chrys sighs melodramatically, but she doesn't really seem to mind. “I suppose I might be able to get you something. Is there anything in particular you'd like?”

You cock your head to the side, thinking for a moment. “Not really, so long as it's a proper meal. Truth be told I'm starving.”

Chrys wags a finger at you like a mother scolding a spoiled child. “You know it's not good to go hungry, if you wish to grow strong, get into shape, you need to eat. Food is the fuel your body uses to sculpt itself into its ideal form.”

Ugh, you remember that old mantra. Your older brother used to say that all the time, something his swordsmanship instructor used to say if you recall correctly. “I know how the old saying goes, but academic pursuits take precedence. Simply keep it in mind when you get me something to eat.”

Chrys places her hands on her hips and leans her weight on one foot. “Fine, but I expect you to be properly thankful. If I wasn't worried for your health I wouldn't bother playing wait staff.”

You wave her off, meandering your way towards the door to the meditation chamber. “You have my thanks Darzi, though I'd be more appreciative if you didn't feel the need to nag me about it. Keep it up and people might mistake us for an old married couple.”
(1/2)
>>
Darzi huffs, but you part ways with her and Kaur before she manages to get in a response. It isn't long before you've made your way back to the little soot covered room you call home. Your dragon still slumbers peacefully on your bed, so once you've produced the Varistha's chest from your cloak you simply take a seat on the floor adjacent. Carefully, reverently you raise the latch and lift the lid, finding the prism glowing dimly at the center of the mess of books and papers. You pluck up a thick stack of loose papers, most covered in writing on both sides, and start to flip through.

You give the papers a cursory glance, categorizing them into separate stacks as quickly and efficiently as you can manage. It seems like, though the Varistha often spread his musing across multiple sheets of paper, there's no sort of logical organization to his notes. They're just a mass of random scribbling to the untrained eye. Fortunately, yours is far from an untrained eye.

Eventually, and after much sifting through the books remaining in the chest for missing papers, you manage to categorize his notes into six parts.

>Focus on his musings regarding artifacts, you think you noticed something about your Hiacian Armor in there.
>Focus on his musings regarding the nature of the universe, maybe it will shed some light on the Void?
>Focus on his musings regarding how to make friends and influence people, he seemed to have researched it extensively.
>Focus on what he wrote about the nature of Vys and the Soul. It's the smallest stack, so you ought to finish it quickly.
>Focus on his writings regarding various theoretical effects, both metamagic and otherwise. It's by far the largest pile.
>Focus on his theological writings, on the nature of the Gods and their relationship to Samjan and the Shahdom.

It will turn our +4 into a +8. I am sure we're close to getting a +6. SO I think we would either wait till then. Or just read this now. And we will become the gods of battering. And getting out of shit/reasoning with Darzi.

Soma I know I am being a bothersome bitch. And have been nagging you with the same question at least 8 times.
But you never answered.
Could we cast speed on our selves to read faster?
also dis>>36087201
>>
>>36087558
Wouldn't we first have to learn speed in order to know whether or not we could?
>>
>>36087558
I wonder we could meditate whilst reading maybe we'd more quickly assimilate the knowledge?
>>
>>36087596
That's not how meditation works.
>>
>>36087558
>Could we cast speed on our selves to read faster?
You'd need to learn speed to find out.

>>36087201
I wrote out it's effects in the combat pastebin.

>Meditation on Forms: Allows you to gather vys and meditate, while at the same time slowly improving your martial skill. At your level of martial expertise, inflicts a -2 malus on meditation rolls and greatly increases the time it takes to meditate. This will improve as your martial talents improve.

>>36087596
Can't read and meditate.
>>
I think that just using the haician armor. Should help us, considering it has passive health benefits + vys constantly going into us. Should be something like speed...but that may be hopeful thinking.
>>36087596
thats why I say wearing the armor would help. We could increase our mental thinking. Getting more reading done with a better understanding.
But it wouldn't really be meditation it would be spending vys to power up our mental thoughts.
>>
>>36087616
appreciate it.

Guys once we get a bit more reading done. We should have Darzi. Give us a day of her time. And learn our forms better/more forms. Get more efficient in our martial arts!
>>
>>36087665
I totally agree with that yeah
>>
>>36087665
Believe it!
>>
>>36087694
>>36087687
I am happy you guys agree.
But do understand I am talking.. like after we read atleast 3 books.
All the notes.
and a few scrolls.
Get metal to vatis(ATLEAST)
Nature I wouldn't mind getting it up an insight or two, possibly even another rank.
learn speed/slow/5 other effects/or meta's.
>>
>>36087665
It cna only benifit us.
>>
>>36087740
Of course. I'm eager to suggest bashing our head against a red hot iron slab until we become a metal vatis.
>>
>>36087740
I support that.
>>
>>36087740
Yeah I agree with you on this we have all these books to read and we keep putting them off when the knowledge is obviously invaluable and the Metal would be awesome
>>
>>36087770
no thanks..
We could likely gain insight into metal simple by asking Balik. Considering she is a metal(I assume expert or master) Since she can mix it in with the oud and affect others mind.

>>36087808
btw I am very eager to learn speed. to cast it on our selves. See how long it lasts. see if it would help reading books.
try a combination of speeding with a cost of 5 vys. See how much we can get done. Along with 2-3 vys on mental speed. Don't want to go to fast we forget our shit once we're done.
Or just wear our armor while we read.
>>
>>36087740
>>36087808

I would feel pretty good about our non-main elements if we could get them all up to Vatis.
>>
>>36088184
I'd feel pretty good about being able to boost a roll with 10 vys as well.
>>
Guys we really need to name our dragon and figure out its gender
>>
>>36088211
ALso I think once we get to 40 vys. We can have our haician armor on 24/7. We went through it and our body should know how to deal with it. + Now we know it was only due to a smaller vys pool along with never experiencing it.
>>
So after this we call up fulvia and ask her to sex our dragon?

agreed everyone?
>>
>>36088295
Hell, ask her do it it while we're reading, kill two birds with one stone
>>
>>36088295
I'll agree to that I wanna know if it's a boy or girl (or whatever)
>>
>>36088278
Maybe we should read the notes on it first

>>36088314
We might need to be there to keep it calm
>>

>>
>>36088366

>>
>>36088366

>>
>>36088330
>Maybe we should read the notes on it first
thats exactly what we're doing..
>>
>>36088295
I don't know why you guys are so eager to have Fulvia stick her metal fingers into the baby dragon's cloaca. It's going to eradicate a lot of trust the thing has in us if we do that and it gets scared or angry about the intrusion.
>>
You pick up the stack of papers relating to artifacts and his experiences with them. The oldest notes are written sloppily, barely legible really. Fortunately the Varistha's penmanship improves as he gets older, and the newest sheets of paper are written in almost perfect script, the letters flowing elegantly into one another. You leaf through the pages until you find what you're looking for, a piece of yellowed parchment bearing an intricate sketch of the Hiacian Armor the Varistha wore, though he's dubbed it 'Warlock Armor'.

You extract it from the pile and read over the various notes he's left in the margins of the page. He's drawn little lines leading away from each separate piece and run down a list of elements and what they do when channeled into that particular piece. The only element he's left off is Metal, though there's an underlined note in the top corner that simply reads 'Metal = Reinforce'.

You look first at the helmet, which according to the notes unlocks 'The Sight' when pure vys is channeled into it. When Water magic is used instead, it results in the ability to breath underwater just as one would on land. Fire results in immunity to poisonous or otherwise unpleasant air of any sort. Nature allows one to 'access surface thoughts: tricky'. At least, that's the way the Varistha put it. You wish he'd expounded a bit further on what 'tricky' entails. Finally, Earth allows one to see through solid objects as if they simply did not exist.
(1/3 or 4)
>>
>>36088389
Someone wanted Zaak
>>
The torso seems to mostly have enchantments related to physical abilities. Raw vys will enhance all of your physical abilities to some extent. Fire will enhance your strength and speed, at the expense of stamina and mental coherence. Water will allow you to more easily bend and flow around attacks, but seems to detriment one's strength and physical toughness. Earth is the opposite, it allows one to whether even the most powerful of blows, but you'll be hard pressed to move an inch while channeling Earth magic. Nature doesn't seem to do anything, unfortunately.

The boots seem to have paired enchantments, a note in the margins mentions that you can't channel vys into one boot without channeling it into the other as well. The gauntlets and pauldrons are likewise paired. The enchantments for both are fairly similar, the only difference being the delivery of the attack. Channeling fire will wreath either your boots or gauntlets in flame. Channeling water will freeze whatever you strike. Channeling Earth will rapidly erode whatever it is you touch. Channeling Nature allows you to more easily manipulate the movements of plantlife.

The greaves don't seem to do much of anything, unfortunately. Presumably Metal magic channeled into them will still result in them being reinforced, but other than that the Varistha didn't remark on any effects when combined with other elements.

To some degree enlightened, you set that sheet aside and instead pick up a stack of papers which all seem to relate to the nature of an enchantment. You see a number of runes written on the page, though you've little context for what they might mean. The Varistha didn't seem to know either, he's just written a note in the margins of the page which reads “Strange script, perhaps Ancient Dwoveth? Found on blade of Elven tribal's sword.”

(2/3 or 4)
>>
You recognize the Contain rune, but sadly it's not linked to much of anything. You wonder what it might've been. It strikes you suddenly that the Varistha's golden blade had obvious runes carved along the blade, could these be those runes?

Besides his copying or runes, he writes at length about the nature of artifacts on both this and successive pages. He purports that artifacts are, in fact, living things. With personality, wants, and needs. He supplies an example in the form of a spear he mentions that he found within the Pa'vala. It drinks the life of those it strikes, channeling a portion of their power to its wielder. However, it keeps a greater portion of that power for itself. The more it drinks, the more his strikes seem to be guided by some unnatural force towards his target.

Your readings are interrupted by a knock on your door, which sets your dragon bolting awake. Its head shoots up, where it had previously been hidden beneath its clawed hands in comfortable sleep. You hear it let out one of those strange croaking chirps that it makes, a strange sound to be certain, but when Darzi pushes open the door bearing with her an entire pot of beef stew, scented with various herbs and spices and ripe with vegetables and other natural accouterments, it starts to whip its tail through the air obviously pleased.

(3/4)
>>
As she steps inside the dragon rises to greet her, she deftly avoids its claws as it rises up on its hind legs to get a look at the pot in her hands. Instead she sets it down in front of you, sticking a wooden spoon into the stew. Your dragon backs off, seeming to sense the meal is yours. “Here you go, damned hermit. I've brought you a nice, hearty meal. Hopefully actually eating something will speed your progress, physically. Maybe you won't be huffing and puffing after a light workout sometime in the near future.”

Her tone is teasing, so you don't get particularly offended. You simply take up the spoon and dig around for a generous chunk of meat. Beef is a rare treat, among your people. The sands of the desert are ill-suited for cattle, so it's typically imported from the successor states to your people's north, or from The lands of the Samrajya to your east. As you take the first bite, the meat practically falls apart in your mouth. It's delightfully tender.

Guys what do you think,
We head back into the mine. Get back to the lake, summon 100 ice golem this time. Once we have the attention of the huge diah, we combine the remaining ice golems. And add how ever many we need to have at least x50 the regular golems we have and kill the king fish. Might be enough to get grandmaster. Into manipulation which is what I want peeaonally. Cause healing as grand mastery is easy as fuck once we study anatomy we will easily be repairing limbs and what not on command.

Erick cominbing the 50 into one huge fighter golem. Using it to fight and using magic through the golem to destroy that fish.

>>36089759
Vatis metal could be done in 1-2 threads easy even while doing other stuff between meditations. We still need to figure out how we want to go about getting our GM. If possible, the hydra heart seems like our best option at the moment but even that entales finding and killing one of the fuckers.
>>
>>36089759
Eh, I feel we're really rushing for that, we should take it slow first and learn metas/effects for dat vys pool
>>
Anything we do that is incredibly dangerous to us for GM will benefit significantly from every extra Vys we have. If we have a larger number to spend on rolls and a larger total to spend overall we will be more likely to succeed and less likely to be completely fucked if we don't.

We should not rush into GM water and try to eat a Hydra heart or something until we learn more stuff. At least some metas or effects because those are fairly quick Vys.

It's indeed cool to have our baby, but one is enough, and the enchanting came with a lot of party members almost dying (Chrys and Fulvia corrupted, everyone in danger in the fight) We already have like a +6 from the temple, a cumulative additional +6 isn't hard to get. Not even talking about how bad an idea going against the demonfish in the lake, or trying for Control GM with such a small thing be.
Besides, I want Healing GM.
But whatever, we have weeks to fuck around here before anything related ro GM

+12 guys. Base with out meditation bonus.
we're talking we need 18's very possible.
And we can do the meditation there, killing that Goliath fish. Working on manipulation.
I don't understand why people want to level to go as a healer. We've already have go profeceincy. And I'd rather have the extra experience with manipulation. Since healing were pretty god at.
>>
>>36089986
>we have weeks to fuck around

Even money says something is going to push us to leave before then. I'd guess we have about a week.

I am split between dragon baby being found out and the new head monk having issue with our friends as the cause.
>>
>>36090022
we are NOT pretty god at healing, our healing atm is probably below baseline GM.
Why would you want control? Regular GM control is already plenty, we're a master Fire and we can just fight smart with water.

>>36090105
Do you understand that water is our base element. It's our best element.
it's the element where we can pull water out of thin air even in the desert.
Pulling water out of air is water manipulation.
Making spikes to impale enemies also manipulation.
we've grand master healing as it is.
we do not have manipulation.

Rolled 1 (1d2)

You bow, as much as you can from a seated position, to Darzi. “Thanks for bringing me food, I appreciate it, really.”

She waves you off. “Don't mention it, really it was no trouble. By the way, what's with the chest? I don't recall you picking it up anywhere. What's the pyramid thing do?”

You flash her a grin, sifting through the Varistha's notes until you find the message he left for you, categorized with the various notes relating to Artifacts. You pass it over to her, and allow her to read it while you focus on your food for a time.

One of the greatest features of the brooches is that you don't have to stop eating to talk to someone without violating basic table manners. Thus, while Darzi is occupied with the letter you reach out for Fulvia via the connection you share, but find that you don't need to reach far. She seems to constantly sit just a thought away, anchored at the back of your mind. It's a strange sensation. {Could you come to my room? I think it's time to have the dragon sexed.}

You don't get the immediate response you were expecting, but rather a knock on the door only a few short moments later. Darzi jumps, and your dragon hisses, positioning itself between you and the door. You feel a little touched that it would be willing to protect you, even though really you should be protecting it. You swallow a mouthful of carrot and celery and then call out. “Come in, Fulvia. The door is open.”

Fulvia steps in, carefully closing the door behind herself. There's an almost unsettling eagerness to the way she moves, she's jerkier than usual. Like she can barely contain herself. The smile she projects on her illusory face is almost too wide, teeth gleaming in the light from the Burning Blanket you made. Come to think of it, you're sort of surprised nobody has asked you about that particular artifact yet.

(1/2)
>>
Fulvia immediately approaches, though your Dragon seems reluctant to meet her. Rather it presses itself against you as Fulvia nears. You hold out a hand to stop her before she can start manhandling your dragon. “I'm going to need to ask you to be gentle, and careful. After all, this is a sapient being, more than that it's a damned dragon. The last thing we'd want is the whole temple learning I'm keeping one in my room, though frankly we haven't been making much of an effort to hide it.”

You're not sure how much of that Fulvia heard. You keep a close eye on her between bites as she extracts a long strip of cloth and tries to coax your dragon away from you so she can get a measure of it. To ease the process along, you focus on positive thoughts as well as the word {Go}. You've been making more of an effort to use words with the dragon, hopefully it will pay off.

Eventually your dragon takes a few steps away from you, and Fulvia slowly approaches. She places one end of the strip of cloth on the nose, scratching the base of its horns to keep it calm while stretching the other end of the cloth to the tip of its tail. She has far more than enough cloth. Mumbling something to herself, she moves on to its wingspan. She grabs the small spikes at the very tip of each of its wings and stretches them apart as far as they'll go without the dragon trying to squirm away. She's only barely got enough cloth, frankly you're surprised she manages to stretch her arms as far apart as the wings seem to stretch.

(2/3)
>>
Basic measurements taken, she sits down on the floor behind the dragon. It tries to turn and face her, but you focus on thoughts of it staying still. It seems to reluctantly comply, but chirps in distress as Fulvia lifts its tail to get a look at its groin. There's a horizontal slit where its tail meets its body with two particularly large scales symmetrically arranged beneath it, right where the tale begins. You assume it's female, but much to your surprise Fulvia points to the two large scales rather than the slit itself. “These indicate male, females don't have enlarged anal scales like this.”

Huh, so he's a he then. Weird. How does it work if both males and females just have a slit down there? Do they, like, rub them together or something? Maybe they're like birds? You shake your head, banishing thoughts of dragon sex from your mind in favor of consideration of a name. You were rather fond of Zahak, a popular figure from mythology often depicted as a great serpent or dragon. Supposedly an ancient guardian of your people, when they had first escaped from Elven lands. Still, that name carries unsavory connotations as Zahak eventually betrayed your people and was only killed with great loss of life.

After hearing that story from the Varistha you're really forced to view that story in a different light.

“I think I'll name him Zahak.” You announce to the room.

Fulvia lets his tail drop and he quickly sits down, curling his tail around his legs. You doubt she understands the significance of the name, mythological speaking. She seems more interested in measuring his seated height and the lengths of his various limbs. Frankly, you don't see how any of these measurements are important. What does she hope to learn by taking them? Does she seek to track his growth?

Darzi, on the other hand, immediately understands the greater meaning of the name. “Zahak? Really? I mean, appropriate considering that he is a Dragon, but don't you think that name bears ill portent?” She passes the Varistha's note back to you, and you hear over the connection you're afforded by the brooches. {Interesting, that he'd leave this to you and not his successor. I get the feeling he has some sort of greater purpose behind gifting it to you than merely passing on his legacy.}

You shrug your shoulders. “Zahak started off as a guardian of our people, and besides that the mythological Zahak was said to be raised among dragons. This Zahak will be raised among our own peop-” You catch yourself, glancing to Fulvia. “Well, if not our people he will be raised among a collection of mortals. Two of which are our people. Hopefully so long as we treat Zahak properly, he will prove a loyal companion.”

Whilst simultaneously speaking, you reply to Darzi via the brooches. {I'm sure you're right, though I've yet to determine what his ulterior motive might be besides preventing me from going on a murderous rampage once I finally lose my mind.}

why would we use nature/water?

I asked soma if you could amputate our own limbs and attatch them to another human/animal corpse and give it a soul. Bonut point for amputating out own arms twice and giving it 4 arms. Is this weird?
>>
>>36091210
Not really, if a body can already channel vys, we wouldn't really need to create those leylines or whatever, the animate effect probably fits perfectly with humanoids.
The only additional cost to a corpse is to keep it from deteriorating.
How is it a stretch exactly?
>>
After a time, Fulvia seems to have taken all the measurements she'd like and stands. Darzi follows her lead. “Well, I'll leave you to your reading and parenting. Try not to stay cooped up in here all day, I don't want to have to drag you out come morning.” With that, she heads out the door. Fulvia had simply wandered off without a word, seemingly off in her own little world. You think she might have a tendency to obsess over things that catch her interest.

You've more or less eaten your fill of the stew. Darzi had gotten you an entire pot, far more than you could eat in one sitting. With that in mind, you turn your attention to Zahak. You focus intently on a mental image of him, and on the name Zahak, and associating that name with him. On a whim, you decide to include your family name. Thus, you try to impress upon your dragon that his name is Zahak Abdul-Hakim. You're not sure how much it understands, because you find that Zahak simply turns to you and stares with a vaguely confused expression, but hopefully it gleaned some sort of meaning.

It's a stretch because it's based on variables that we have no vys estimates for, on top of making assumptions on what they need in the first place and using that assumption to presume an alternative method is easier without first having proof of the other being ineffectual. And this goes both ways as we haven't tried making a true golem yet or seriously pursued any of these experimental paths with vigor.
So saying so without actually knowing so makes it a weee bit of a stretch.

Done with your meal, you heft up the iron pot and turn around to place it on the floor in front of you. “Zahak! Come, you may eat the rest.” You mimic your words in thought, while at the same time focusing on the mental image of Zahak eating from the bowl. He seems to understand quickly, pushing himself to hist feet and practically prancing to the bowl, chest puffed up and wings slightly spread to make himself appear larger. He seems quite pleased with himself, though you're unsure why. As he reaches the pot, his mouth opens wide and a blast of flame roars forth, boiling away the water and reducing the meat and vegetables within to a charred black mass. Zahak digs in merrily.

You pick up the Varistha's notes once more, turning over the page you'd been reading to find an elaborate illustration of the Varitha's shield. Inscribed around the edges are the runes as you remember them, but additionally there are a number of runes you don't recognize from the shield, set closer to the center of the shield. You recognize contain and create, but other than that what they say is a mystery. They seem to be acting upon the central, embossed face. Odd that you don't remember these from the shield, perhaps the Varistha was thinking of making modifications? Perhaps hidden runes?

He's inscribed a full list of the runes at the bottom, there are roughly sixteen unique runes, with many being repeated several times over on the shield itself. You feel like if you just knew a few more of these runes you might be able to puzzle out the meaning of the rest based on context, but as is you're completely lost. You're unsure whether or not you can enchant an object without understanding all of the runes used in the process, but illustrations like this make you really want to try.

The last few pages of notes on artifacts seem to detail recent rumors he heard. You find three pages dedicated to the supposed 'mind restoration artifact' in the Pa'vala. It's purported to be in the 'Temple of Dhatu, The Many Faced God'. You don't recall a Dhatu being in the Samjan pantheon, nor do you recall any god being dubbed 'The Many Faced God'. Surya would be the closest, as a shifting mass of limbs, never assuming the same form twice. However, you've never heard him referred to as Many Faced. If anything, his face is the only thing that remains relatively constant.

You find a short entry which seems fragmented, judging by the number of breaks in the script. A note in the margin remarks that it was found within an old tome inside the library. It reads “Dhatu, He of Many... seven mouths and sang the song which... destroy the corruption which plagued that... Praise! Praise to the Many Faced God! Praise to the Founder of Industry! Praise to the...”

You can't help but find the passage vaguely unsettling. It's followed by another, apparently from the same book according to another note. “Within His greatest temple: the Bahya!-” You find that terminology strange. Bahya, as far as you know, is a word which means “outer” or “outward”. Sometimes used to refer to the curtain wall of a fortress or the facade of a building. “-There lies a stone of crimson blood and jagged appearance. The barest touch is said to cleanse the mind of any influences, internal or external. To make the mind as pure as that of a child.”

(2/3)
>>
Unfortunately, that's the last of the Varistha's notes on the subject of artifacts. You're left with an uneasy feeling, and reach down absentmindedly to scratch behind the knobby horns that grace Zahak's head. He seems fairly content to act as a back rest, though you think you might have scalded yourself simply be being in contact with him for an extended period. Water magic makes it a non-issue.

You pluck up the smallest stack of papers, the one which appears to relate to the nature of vys and the soul. The Varistha didn't write particularly much on the subject, and from what you can tell the writings are fairly recent. The parchment has yet to yellow and the writing is neat and precise. Still, judging by the amount the ink has faded it can't be too recent. The four pages, each one filled front and back in dense writing, are all that you could find that even mentioned the soul.

You begin reading, and find that the pages are incredibly dense with information. The Varistha starts off by arguing that the Samjan 'Soul' is not so much an entity as it is a substance. A resource, renewable infinitely. According to the Varistha, the source of Soul lies within Surya, and is itself a consequence of the cut Pani placed within the god's side. Even know Soul leaks out of the wound and proliferates the world, collecting inside the bodies of living organisms.

It is from this soul that Vys originates, as a natural byproduct of Soul. The Varistha argues that it is the result of the Soul degrading. Turning into a lesser substance. However, because Soul proliferates the world the average person will not notice any change as their soul is constantly being drained and refilled. By expending vys, one causes the Soul to degrade faster. Thus one's reserves are replenished rather than merely remaining static. The soul is unaffected, as it's being refilled just as quickly as it's degrading.

A good half of the page is taken up by a lengthy formula intended to represent this transference mathematically. It's essentially of change of rate formula, nothing terribly complex, but applied in an interesting way. You glance over it and find it acceptable according to your relatively inexperienced eye. Moving on, the Varistha seems to shift focus away from the Soul and onto Vys.

(1/2 or 3)
>>
Vys, the Varistha argues, is a type of poison, and just like poison one may build of a tolerance for it. As evidence for this he provides the Warlock Armor. When worn by those with a relatively low tolerance for extended periods of time, their bodies are wracked by discomfort and disease, exhaustion and lethargy. He even reports that some have died or committed suicide while suffering from an overabundant supply of vys, while at the same time remarking that such an overabundance can become addicting.

Thus, the reason one's reserves increase as they come to better understand the universe, is due to their tolerance of vys increasing. Allowing them to contain more vys within them as their Soul degrades. Excess vys is usually leaked into the surroundings but can become compacted or clogged if a constant flow is being forced into someone.

He goes on to argue that vys may be used to force one's will upon reality because it is ultimately derived from Soul, which according to the Varistha is the ultimate determining factor in regards to what is and is not real. Without a soul, nothing can truly be said to exist. While anyone with a soul can create whatever it is they may want. With the right knowledge and training, of course.

His last paragraph concludes that enchanted artifacts likely include a piece of soul detached from a host and forced within an object, thus making that object 'real' and able to enforce its will upon the world.

(2/3)
>>
Having finished reading, you set the stack of notes aside. A compelling argument, certainly; though, you must admit you have your doubts. If soul is truly merely a particulate substance which accumulates and degrades over time, what does that mean for the afterlife? Does it exist? The Varistha certainly seemed convinced that he would be welcomed into Pani's loving embrace and bathed within her Great River, but if the soul really is merely a substance would it not simply expire with whatever creatures was playing host to it at the time? It seems such a depressing thought, that life could merely end at death.

Your dragon seems to sense your concern, as it nuzzles its head into your side. Its horns dig into your skin quite painfully but it's the thought that counts, right? You run a hand wreathed in flame along Zahak's long neck and begin to consider what you ought to do next. Unfortunately there comes a knock on your door, interrupting your train of thought.

Y'know I was gonna hold a final destination vote to see whether or not you opened the door, but now I'm not so sure.

Nah, just fucking with you. Vote 1 to open the door without hiding the dragon. Vote 2 to open the door after hiding the dragon. You're opening the door regardless.

Last vote, and probably last post for tonight since I'm unusually tired. Sorry for ending it a tad early.

Not fucking up, of course. The roll for simple illusion is a diplo roll to convince your dragon to stay still. The roll for invisibility is to see whether or not you can pull off invisibility. You have a +4 mod for both.

You wave a hand absentmindedly, creating an illusion of the floor just beneath your dragon to conceal it from sight. You sense rising confusion, and its head seems to shoot out of the floor with evident curiosity as to what it is you're doing. It almost immediately attempts to mimic you, its form becoming blurry and indistinct but not quite fading from sight. It's one of the simplest of illusions, you'll need to teach it some of the more advanced techniques you've learned lately, once it can meditate that is.

You focus on generally positive emotions, and the image of your dragon hiding beneath the domed illusion. Just to be certain he gets your point, you strengthen your thoughts with vys; expending it to further focus your mind. Perhaps not entirely necessary, but there's no reason to risk your dragon being spotted. Plus, maybe he will learn something if you're able to more clearly focus on what you want him to do?

“Zahak stay hidden. I don't know who's on the other end of the door.” Your voice is quiet and gentle, you don't think Zahak really understands but he'll never learn if you don't actually speak to him. Even if he doesn't understand, he ducks his head back inside the dome. After waiting a moment to confirm he wasn't just going to come leaping out, you push yourself up and make your way to the door.

You're displeased by the site before you when you jerk open the simple wooden door. You find yourself face to face with Mortia, who seems to have gotten into some sort of fight. She's got a busted lip and a cut running down her cheek. If you had to guess, it was a scratch of some sort. You also note a touch of blood on her knuckles that you don't think is hers, and what appears to be broken vines tangled in her curly black hair.

(1/2)
>>
On either side of her is a monk you don't recognize, each one holding one of her arms firmly. One of them has a black eye he hasn't bothered to heal. You can't help he's left it unhealed solely for your benefit. Mortia refuses to meet your eyes, while the two monks seem to be staring holes in you. “Brother Abdul, the previous Varistha informed you that you would be responsible for the actions of your household. This human woman has assaulted one of the Sisters-” She tries to jerk free of the monks' grasp, but both hold firm. “-and as such her punishment falls upon your shoulders.”

>EEEEEND THREAD
>>
Oh! I forgot to mention. Your vys pool should've been bumped up by completing the Varistha's notes on Vys and the Soul, though not from his notes on artifacts. That puts your max vys pool at 37.
>>
>>36093996
And where are the sisters she fought?

>>
>>36093996
So I think we should heal everyone there right away, then make a show of reprimanding her to get the monks off our backs, then tell her its all good and ask to hear the story.

I imagine it had something to do with racism towards humans or disagreements about the Rhynian empire, which make her reaction totally reasonable.

We also need to give her one of those extra brooches that Ricky stole from the pirates. We might as well give the other to Ricky while we're at it.

Of course this is punishment for us! This will have to be a ten hour ballad to Panni, this is valuable time we could be spending on research and meditation. Not to mention the taxing cost of creating amplifiers so that every corner of the temple can be soothed by our song! Or must we extend this to twenty hours of playing to placate their enraged hearts?

>'The Sight' when pure vys is channeled into it.
That shit is useful as all fucks.
