You are Lieutenant RACHEL "RED" KELSEY, a combat rescue officer of the United States Air Force.

Currently, you were in a bit of a sticky situation.

Fuck that, you were in an EXTREMELY FUBAR situation.

Currently, one of your fellow witches, Elsa, was being held hostage by that really creepy Russian bitch that you were pretty sure was stalking you. Apparently, she wanted another rematch, and was bargaining Elsa's life for it.

Fuck, you would've fought her one on one anyways. No need to go through all this hoop jumping. Well, at least Cap agreed to it, but you doubt he really had much choice, anyways. You were pretty sure he'd prefer that you not face Raikov at all, probably due to what happened last time. You're not sure why he was so worried about that. You ARE a healwitch, after all. You could just magic away any self inflicted stab wounds.

...okay you had to admit that didn't sound very good, even in your head.

"Remember, Red." Pierce puts a hand on your shoulder. "No risks. All you need to do is drag the fight out. Tarin is already coming to extract Elsa. Just distract Raikov."

Going by the last thread Raikov is pretty much the only thing stopping the chink witches from murdering us.

Subduing her while she still can keep the chinks in line is probably the best option. If it is possible is another thing though.

"Got it, Cap." You nod. He's never let you down before, and you had wish to disappoint or worry him.

"Good. Remember, neutralizing Raikov is not a priority. Your and Elsa's safety is."

"I know, I know." You roll your eyes.

"Don't give me that kind of tone, Lieutenant. This is serious." Cap sighs.

"Don't worry, Cap, I got this." You assure him.

With that, you take a deep breath and begin to stride to the middle of the field where Raikov is waiting for you. Behind, you fellow witches and Ugly hovered menacingly, weapons hot and ready. In front, the Chinese witches accompanying Raikov have pulled up closer to the treeline, no doubt in case they had to retreat quickly. Of course, Elsa was with them, too, tied up and placed securely in the middle of their line. However, you noted from the anxious looks on the Chinese witches' faces that they probably didn't want to be here. Hell, you're sure in their shoes, Raikov would be a pretty shitty commander to serve under.

"Ah, the little red one!" Raikvo smiles as you get within a few meters of her. "I trust you are prepared?"

"I'm ready." You say, your hand already gripping the handle of your sheathed katana. You had briefly considered trying to convince Raikov to let Elsa go, but you remembered that she wasn't the type to even entertain the notion of diplomacy.

"Excellent. Excellent!" Raikov grins, her hand gripping the handle of her own sword.

You narrow your eyes as you quickly survey what Raikov was packing. Unlike your previous battles with her, she was not wearing her tank strikers this time, which mean you were more evenly matched. No heavy armor or long range cannons for her to use. Instead, she was wearing the standard Russian special forces uniform, sans pants, of course. However, she was still packing that wicked powered gauntlet on her left arm. Not only did it provide armor protection on that side, but it also doubled as a melee weapon in both fist and claw mode. Had to be heavy as hell without her strikers supporting it, though. Meanwhile, Raikov's right hand was resting on the handle of a military saber. Like your katana, it was largely designed for cutting and slashing type attacks.

Your smaller wakizashi was nestled in a secure sheath on your belt. Jetstream taught you how to dual wield with it, but even she admitted it wasn't her preferred combat style. Then again, that was under the assumption the opponent would have ranged weapons, which wasn't the case here...

You decide to leave your wakizashi sheathed. It was always meant to be a backup weapon, and you saw no reason not to keep it as one, even though you thought you'd look really fucking kickass dual wielding swords. Ah, maybe another time.

"Prepare!" Raikov grins, malice flashing in her eyes.

And the world slows down as your combat instinct kicked in. It used to be just a split second, instinctive thing, but Jetstream taught you how to hone it so it would last much longer. You could see Raikov pulling her saber out of its sheath, making an ugly grinding sound as steel rubbed against leather. You had a split second to respond. You could play defensive and back off, getting safely out of Raikov's attack range, or you could try using on of those Iaijutsu moves Jetstream taught you to try and beat Raikov to the punch.

You decide to go straight for the alpha strike. You tighten your grip on your katana and give it a hard pull, putting extra strength into it so you can instantly convert the act of drawing your sword into a swing. However, while you may have had better practical duel training, Raikov no doubt had instincts and reflexes that could only be honed by years of combat. You see Raikov pause for a split second before bringing her left arm around, blocking your blow with her armored fist. The loud CLANG of metal clashing meant she didn't even have her shield up, no doubt to conserve magic power. You wonder if Raikov was just being cautious, or her magic reserves were much smaller than anybody realized.

"Trying to end the fight so soon?" Raikov tutted, batting your sword away from her. "And here I thought we could cherish the time we have together!"

However, you had to make a quick decision. Keep pressing the attack to keep her pinned or back off and have her make the next move? This depended on whether Raikov had some sort of counterattack ready. If she could see your Iaijutsu move coming...

You back off, putting a little more distance between yourself and Raikov. Just enough that you'd be out of reach of her weapons so she'd have to make an effort to close the distance. You decided to play it safe since this was the first time you've seen Raikov sporting a cavalry saber. However, judging from the way she holds it, with confidence and precision, it's definitely not an unfamiliar feeling to her.

"Oh? Showing restraint? That's so unlike you!" Raikov frowns. "I would've expected you to attack me with everything you have!"

"Yeah, that's kinda the point." You say, keeping your attention no Raikov's movements as she slowly paced around you like a predatory cat.

"You are full of surprises, aren't you?" Raikov giggles. "But I know this isn't what you want, right? You can feel it too, don't you? The desire to fight, to kill, to WIN. It simmers in the depths of your heart, just waiting to erupt. Why keep it in? You're not going against me if you do."

You stay silent because deep down, you know she's kinda right. You DO want to charge in, to cut her up into tiny little pieces. Make an example of her that will make her Chinese buddies shit their panties in fear.

But another part of you is warning you that Raikov's just trying to bait you. She's already seen you fight aggressively, that means she knows how to counter it. Maybe.

Vizzini: But it's so simple. All I have to do is divine from what I know of you: are you the sort of man who would put the poison into his own goblet or his enemy's? Now, a clever man would put the poison into his own goblet, because he would know that only a great fool would reach for what he was given. I am not a great fool, so I can clearly not choose the wine in front of you. But you must have known I was not a great fool. You would have counted on it, so I can clearly not choose the wine in front of me.

Man in Black: You've made your decision then?

Vizzini: Not remotely! Because iocane comes from Australia, as everyone knows! And Australia is entirely peopled with criminals. And criminals are used to having people not trust them, as you are not trusted by me, so I can clearly not choose the wine in front of you.

Man in Black: Truly, you have a dizzying intellect.

Vizzini: Wait till I get going! Now, where was I?

Man in Black: Australia.

Vizzini: Yes, Australia. And you must have suspected I would have known the powder's origin, so I can clearly not choose the wine in front of me.

Man in Black: You're just stalling now.

Vizzini: You'd like to think that, wouldn't you?! You've beaten my giant, which means you're exceptionally strong, so you could've put the poison in your own goblet, trusting on your strength to save you, so I can clearly not choose the wine in front of you! But, you've also bested my Spaniard, which means you must have studied, and in studying you must have learned that man is mortal, so you would have put the poison as far from yourself as possible, so I can clearly not choose the wine in front of me!

You remember Cap's words to you pretty clearly. Stay alive at all costs and buy time. You're not sure where Tarin was, but you guess that was kind of the point. You were also pretty sure Cap didn't want to risk giving away anything by relaying intel to you over the radio, especially with Raikov's sensitive hearing in play. You'd just have to trust that Tarin could get here in a timely fashion. You back off a bit more.

"Fine, if you won't attack, then I'll take the honor!" Raikov's grin turns into a full toothed smile as she dashes in with incredibly speed. You're barely able to deflect her saber strike as sparks fly. You don't even have time to counterattack as she brings her power fist around to strike, forcing you to dive to the side to avoid it.

"Mmmmm, so fast and nimble. Good, so it will be a challenge to catch you!" Raikov says happily, readying her weapons again.

Again, Raikov seemed to be restricting her use of magic. Was she just trying to test you? Either way, going into this without using magic was plain suicide. Problem was, only a small focus to use, the total power you had was pretty limited compared to strikers.

You decide not to use your magic just yet. You wanted to see what Raikov was trying to go for. Raikov again goes on the offensive, attacking you with a flurry of slashes from her saber that you're only barely able to ward off with blocks and parries from your own sword. Good thing your sword was made from tougher stuff than traditional katanas. You're sure Jetstream was screaming internally seeing how much abuse you were putting your sword under.

"Is that all you got?" You grin, trying to goad Raikov.

"Of course not!" Raikov smiles madly as she swings again. You parry it again, but wince when you feel much more strength behind it. You realize too late that Raikov's familiar has appeared, and she brings her power fist around with blinding speed, catching you square in the chest and sending you flying. You hit the ground hard. You weren't fucking expecting that!

Your own familiar instinctively manifests and your chest burns with warmth as your healing magic automatically begins repairing shattered ribs and ruptured lungs. Good thing she was only using magic to enhance her own strength and not the weapon itself. You're pretty sure if she did that you'd be reduced to paste. You clamber back up to your feet and glare at Raikov as you spit out a mouthful of blood.

"Good! Good! That's the face I want to see!" Raikov says as she slowly strides forward. "Let it out already! Then again, if you don't want to take this fight seriously, perhaps you really don't care about the little German, eh?"

Great, now she was indirectly threatening Elsa. Either case, you had no choice but to fight now.

You begin focusing your magic on your strength and shield. No need to go into this half assed. You take one of the fighting stances Jetstream taught you, pausing for a bit let your chest finish healing. Meanwhile, Raikov gives you a look of utter disappointment.

"I was expecting more." She sighed. "Perhaps your heart really isn't-"

You don't give a battle cry, or yell out an attack, or give any warning at all, really. With one powerful push from your legs, and you lunge forward like a missile, your sword ready to strike. Raikov just barely manages to block the blow with her gauntlet, but you can see the look of surprise on her face when your blade digs into the armored gauntlet, slicing into thick metal like a saw going through a log. Raikov quickly pulls her fist away and responds with a saber slash, but you backstep just in time, with the tip of the saber drawing a thin line on your shield.

THAT gets Raikov's mood going. She begins chuckling as her fist deploys into claw mode and she charges forward again. You do your best to parry her saber, but you really have no choice but to avoid her claws at all cost, even if that means losing shield power to opportunistic saber strikes.

However, Raikov's overly aggressive style means there's lots of holes in her defense, which you do your best to take advantage of. A poke with your blade tip when she overreaches, a slash to the legs when she overshoots a claw swing, just little things.

However, little things build up. You wipe sweat out of your eyes and try to catch your breath. Raikov likewise takes a momentary breather, her heavy breaths and drooping posture meaning she was also getting fatigued.

Christ where the hell was Tarin.

Fuck, radio silence really sucked since you had no idea what was going on outside of the current battle. However, you could see that Elsa was still in Chinese custody. How far away was Tarin? Or was she waiting for an opportunity to strike?

Raikov has to know by now, that we're just stalling for time.

That means whatever Raikov is about to do next, is to completely wreck whatever strategy we were trying to use to stall for time.

Which means if she has anything like a secret move or winning move, she's going to pull it outta her ass RIGHT ABOUT NOW.

>Kill Raikov

You decide to keep Raikov engaged. Tarin was a smart girl. She knew what she was doing. You had your own part to do. You close the distance with Raikov again, attacking with your own set of sword wings. Raikov meets you head on, but she doesn't seem to be in a sword fighting mood any more. As you try to swing down with your sword, her claw shoots and and grabs your sword arm, keeping it locked in place. You wince as the powered gauntlet tightens around your arm, your shield being the only thing keeping your arm from being crushed like a toothpick.

You briefly try to reach for your wakizashi, but are forced instead to grab Raikov's sword arm as she brings her saber down.

Now at a stalemate, the both of you just glare at each other as you each try to get the upper hand. However, neither of you could seem to overpower the other.

And that's when Raikov headbutts you, that mad smile still on her face. You're stunned briefly but still hold position. With an angry grunt, you return the gesture, bashing your own forehead into Raikov's with a loud, literally skull shattering CRACK.

Well, you could heal it. Raikov couldn't, you figure.

Suddenly, there's the loud sound of cannon fire from the Chinese witches. both you and Raikov glance to see shells falling around what looks like a dust storm shooting across the field. You take another glance at the treeline and see that Elsa is gone.

About fucking time.

However, even with Elsa in her possession, Tarin was still not out of danger. The Chinese witches already had an idea of where Tarin was and were raining shells down on her. Tarin seemed to be pinned to the deck, but at the very least her optic camo would throw off the witches' aim...

Suddenly, Raikov lets go of your sword arm and aims a punch at you. Now freed, you let go of Raikov's arm and sidestep, realizing too late it was a feint. Raikov charges... away from you and throws her saber through the air.

You can see the sword sail through the, and it takes a moment for you to realize what was happening. Half of the blade seems to disappear a split second before Tarin's optic camo fails. You see your squadmate lose control of her strikers and she plows into the ground, dropping Elsa as well. Dust, dirt and dried grass are kicked up into the air, and you can't see whether either witch was still okay, or even alive.

"Distractions. Every time there are distractions." Raikov grumbles.

You're not sure what happened next, just that you felt a lot of ANGER and POWER surge up within you. Screaming, you charge Raikov, your katana at the ready. Raikov spins around, ready block your blow with her gauntlet as she always has...

But this time is different. You put EVERYTHING you have into your blade, creating a shield around with the thinnest edge imaginable. Neither Raikov's shield or her armored gauntlet even register to you. They fall away to the edge of her blade just as easily as the meat and bone underneath as you literally shear Raikov's left arm off.

Raikov doesn't quite scream or yell. She just falls to her knees in shock, still processing just what the hell happened.

However, an explosion interrupts your perception as your allies begin trading fire with the Chinese now that Elsa was no longer in play. This was quickly turning into a goddamn shooting gallery!

"Red, get out of there!" Cap yells.

You briefly consider grabbing Raikov, but now Chinese witches are focusing their attention on you. You see two speeding in your direction, cannons aimed. However, they seemed more intent on recovering Raikov than picking a fight with you, especially with fire from your allies raining down on them. No way you could outrun while dragging Raikov, so you instead put all your energy into shields and start sprinting back to the LZ. To your side, you can see Elsa limping her to the LZ as well, while Cap is carrying Tarin, with Rex giving supporting fire.

"NOOOOOOOOOO!" You hear Raikov scream.

You risk a look back to see one of the Chinese tankwitches grabbing Raikov's remaining arm and dragging her away, while the second shielded them from incoming fire. Once Raikov was in their possession, they all popped smoke, presumably to retreat into the trees.

"Boss, I still got them on thermals. Should we pursue?" You hear Ugly ask.

"Negative. Hold position." Cap grunts. "Red, are you okay?"

"Y-yeah." You nod as you finally reach the Ghost Hawk. You get there first, so you have wait for Cap and the others to catch up. Elsa arrives first, giving a deep sigh of relief.

"Thanks a lot. You really saved me out there." She slumps in her seat.

"What about her partner?" You ask.

"Last thing I told her was to make her way back to friendly lines no matter what." Elsa shrugs. "We can probably get on the radio when we take off."

A few seconds later, Cap arrives, an unconscious Tarin in his arms. Besides the cavalry saber sticking out of her side, she also had a lot of scratches and bruises, no doubt from the crash itself.

"Is she-" You start.

"Alive." Cap grimaces. "We're heading back ASAP. Sorry, Elsa, but if Lisa can make her way back on her own we'll be leaving her."

"I-I understand." Elsa nods.

There's then a dull WHUMP as Euclid scuttles Tarin's discarded strikers.

"Anyways." Cap sighs as he and Rex load Tarin onto a stretcher. "Good job, Red. You did good out there."

"It's my fault Tarin got hurt..." You sigh.

And then you feel a sudden pain in your gut. You double over and see the source was Tarin's fist. Tarin opens one eye and glares at you with it.

"Getting hit by that was my own damn fault, so get over." She grunts. "Now hurry up and help the Captain get this damn sword out of me."

"Right. Right." You nod, placing your hands around where the blade entered Tarin's side.

"You still up for this?" Cap asks as he grabs the handle.

"Yeah." You nod. "I still got some juice left."

"Okay. One... two... THREE!" Cap yanks the sword out and you immediately send a pulse of healing magic into the wound, sealing it up and stopping the bleeding. However, you'd need to take Tarin to a proper medical facility to determine the true extent of the damage.

"Thanks." Tarin sighs.

Rex then bends down with a syringe of painkillers, but Tarin bats it away.

"No. I don't like being on that stuff." Tarin grunts.

"Fine, fine." Rex backs off.

"Anyways, I have to ask, Red." Cap looks at you. "When you had Raikov down like that, if there were no interruptions, would you have seriously finished her off?"

"...what?" You stare back curiously.

"I dunno. I just get the feeling that you're growing up!" Cap laughs as he ruffles you hair.

"H-hey! Quit it!" You squeal. "I thought you said I was grown up!"

"Yeah, well, you're still a kid in my eyes." Cap laughs.

"Jerk." You grumble.

Bullseye gets you to the field hospital in record time, and at this point, late into the overall battle, it's already filled to the brim with wounded. Even with an injured witch on board, your landing is delayed by a queue as other medevac birds are given priority to land. Must be some real serious cases if they had to delay treating a witch. However, your helo finally gets the green light to land, and both Tarin and Elsa are quickly carted out.

"We're going to go pick up Lisa, and see if Hessler needs any more assistance." Cap says as Tarin and Elsa are escorted away. "Red, you should stay here."

"What?" You blink.

"You took some serious hits from Raikov during that fight, and you no doubt used up a lot of magic. You look like you're about to drop dead from exhaustion. You're going to stay here and get checked out. I don't want to risk you overexerting yourself in the field. Plus," Cap grins. "Somebody's going to have to keep an eye on Tarin and Elsa. Who knows what kind of havoc they'll start."

"You have a point, Cap." You sigh.

"Thanks." Cap smiles. "We'll be back before you know it. From the sounds of it, Hessler will probably have this wrapped up before the end of the day."

Pushing all the way to the outskirts of Pyongyang in a single day? Looks like Hessler's reputation wasn't exaggerated at all.

After watching as the Ghost Hawk and your fellow squadronmates fly off to the front, you return your attention to the ground. All over, you can see hundreds, maybe even thousands of wounded. Not just soldiers, but civilians as well. After all, casualties didn't happen exclusively at the front. You could see areas where temporary tents were set up for the low priority wounded, while the most serious cases were being carted into the actual hospital building.

And more and more kept coming in every minute.

And damn, you lost track of Tarin and Elsa, too.

Ah, well, you might as well get yourself checked out. You head over to the triage line and fill out some paperwork. You see the corpsman running the station give you a suspicious look when he reaches the part of the card that says you're a witch.

"What, you don't believe me?" You grunt.

"Sorry, ma'am, but you ARE wearing pants..."

"Oh my god." You roll your eyes and manifest your familiar, your red panda ears and tail popping into existence. "Happy now?"

"Um, sorry for any offense, ma'am." The corpsman pales. "Just standard procedure, you know."

"Yeah, whatev-" Suddenly, you're overcome with a wave of dizziness and nausea and you stumble, losing your footing. Thankfully, the corpsman is quick witted enough to drop his clipboard and catch you before you fall.

"Looks serious." He grunts as he gently guides you down to your knees and picks up his clipboard and stamps the big red words PRIORITY on your triage card.

"No, really, I'm sure there are people that need it more than me.."

"Standard procedure, ma'am. Witches get priority treatment." The corpsman says.

Man, sometimes you really hated witch privilege.

And just like that, you're put on a wheelchair and whisked away to an examination room. There's really no time or resources to get you changed out of your fatigues, though. However, you're considerate enough to strip down to your undershirt.

You take a look around you to check out the examination room. You could tell it was specifically set aside for witches, judging from the foci and magical diagrams scattered about, but mostly because the room was just a bit too clean for a busy field hospital like this. Finally, the door opens and a fairly tired looking healwitch walks in.

"Lieutenant Rachel Kelsey?" She asks.

"That's me." You nod.

"Doctor Rubens." The healwitch introduces herself. "What's your problem?"

"Um, maybe some magic overuse. Plus I got hit in the chest really hard." You say.

"Hm, let me see." Rubens stares at your chest. You see her eyes glow as she scans your body. No doubt her ability was some kid of x-ray vision. "Jeez, you weren't kidding. Nearly every rib broken, a ruptured lung, and even a bruised heart. Looks like a healwitch fixed it up pretty recently, but it's a pretty amateur job."

Your eyebrow twitches.

"I was kind of a bit busy at the time." You grunt. "Hard to concentrate when you're in live combat."

"You know, I haven't always been stuck in a hospital room. I've done my fair share of gruntwork on the front." Rubens gives a wry smile. "Ever had to reattach a guy's legs in the middle of firefight so you wouldn't have to carry him back home?"

"N-no." You blink. "Mind giving this 'amateur' some pointers, then?"

"Sure, why not." Rubens shrugs as she presses a hand against your chest. "I have no idea what the hell they're teaching in the academies these days."

You can feel the healing energy flowing into your chest, but... it feels different somehow. You couldn't really describe the sensation. It just felt... softer? Fluffier? Nothing like conventional healing magic.

"There, good as new!" Rubens chuckles.

"How... how did you do that?" You gasp.

"Heh, the problem with healwitches nowadays is that most of them are taught to brute force their way through problems." Rubens takes a seat next to you. Just fart out a bunch of heal energy and let it do its work. But that's just inefficient as hell. You're wasting lots of magic dispersing the energy into areas that don't need healing at all."

"And you have a way around it?" You ask.

"More or less. See, think like comparing a bullet to a bomb. Say you need to kill a guy. You could drop a bomb on him, but it's kind of waste of money and resources when all you need to do is hit him with the bullet. The trick to good healing is that you need to consciously direct where the magic goes. Force it to go only where you want to and nowhere else. That way, you heal only the places that need healing, and you save up tons more magical energy in the process."

"Why don't more healwitches do it, then?"

"Well, I have to admit, it's really hard to pull off. But the best healwitches in the world can do it." Ruben shrugs.

"Can... can you teach me, then?"

"Hmmmm, it's something that can't really be taught. It's one of those skills you have to learn on your own."

"Oh..." You sigh.

"Well, how about this." Rubens pats you on the shoulder. "How about you tag along with me for the rest of the day. See how I work. Maybe you can learn a thing or two."

"I.... thanks." You grin.

"Oh, and one more thing." Rubens smiles. "For being such a good patient."

And she hands you a lollipop.

Rubens just laughs at your unamused glare.
