Stage 44: Why Heaven is a Curse.

Your eyes open instantly, and the towering figures look down upon you, their shining eyes alight with fire in the darkness of the damp, smelly cavern. It smells, it feels like Yomi – unclean, unhallowed. Corrupt and alien, though not so alien as the landlord's office. You can feel a blade dig into your arm, tearing at your soft skin and ripping the muscles deeply. Five figures, shadows. The short, plump one snarls in guttural, hateful tones as it rips another strip of flesh from your arm, one hand holding your wrist, the other bringing the long, dripping shred of muscle to its yellow, glowing mouth and taking a bite. The slender one opposite it bears down on your left arm, trying to tear it from the socket. The massive one that looms over your head, strange shadow of green blackness, gurgles obscene laughter as it grips your breasts roughly, talons digging into soft skin.

Next to the slender one is a fat one, a disgusting pile of shadows that looks almost exactly like something Wan-wan would leave in the yard wriggles and puts tiny hands up to it's gaping orange maw, shoveling in bloody gobbets of flesh before reaching down to slice wounds into your legs. In the distance a tiny shadow capers and dances, a wand in its hand and the shape of its body like that of a miko's dress. The tittering laughter if shrieks makes it impossible to make out anything the others are saying, and behind it a horrible worm rises up, a vast white maw opening from the blackness and hissing as it moves to engulf you.

Your immediate thought is Taisho Ryoga; he has to have used his magic though the mirrors while you were unconscious. Another strip is ripped from your arm and there is more tittering as you hold your body still, feigning a weakness that you most certainly do not feel. They're holding you down, but not very securely. Are they bakemono? Demons? You've never met a demon in person. You're certain they're not youkai, whatever they are; there is a maliciousness to them that is too human to be that utterly alien.

One thing is for certain: if you do not escape quickly, you're going to lose another arm.

[] Fake a struggle and break free.
[] Scream and “fall unconscious” and take advantage of their response.
[] Fuck subterfuge – take them out now.
[] Wait and see if you can figure out where any of your family is.
[] Take a deep, slow breath and let them see that you're awake, see what happens.

Possibilities:

1: Good ol' Taisho the demon-spawn did some magic fuckery

2: This is the aftershock from feeding Yui's uncle to the goddes of Death

3: The Chatolic priests managed to get an Angel on our ass

4: Goto or his friend did have some surprise ready for us, after all

5: Going to Yomi did indeed fuck us up in some way

6: An ally we thought we could trust for the moment betrayed us

7: the Clan Ryo or their allies had this trick up their sleeves

8: Anonimous hired a sorcerer to deal with us

9: Someone we don't know yet want a piece of the God of Destruction

[X] Wait and see if you can figure out where any of your family is.
[X] Take a deep, slow breath and let them see that you're awake, see what happens.

You can survive another few bites taken out of you – Water dragonettes can cope with damage done better than any others, after all – so you take a deep breath, looking at each of the demonic creatures in turn, your Water Eyes seeing their malevolent, blackened minds, hateful and revolting, filled with thoughts of devouring you and yours and all that you love, piece by piece until nothing remains but broken memories and a mindless, soulless husk.

They seem to relax their grips a little, especially the massive one looking over you, the one at your head. It leans closer, it's language obscenities and hate, drool pattering upon your cheeks. The one to your right, tears another strip of flesh from your arm and gurgles hateful amusement. Of them all, the only one which does not seem to fall for your relaxed state is the one on your left arm – it tightens it's grip so hard you can feel your bones, unbreakable and indestructible, grinding together in horrid detail. Hot liquid burns your flesh as it opens its mouth, acidic drool pattering along your left arm as it lowers its head.

Still, you persist, and it is just long enough to hear the tiny, tittering doll-shadow murmur a name – Kiki. That one, at least, knows something! You just have to brave the horrifying maw of the thing behind it.

[] Take out them out in one explosive blast of elemental power.
[] Kicks and sweeps; the one near your legs is weakest.
[] That left side one has got to go first.
[] The one on the right first, you like having at least one normal arm.
[] The big one has got to go!

Water eyes is used to glean more information from what our senses tell us about the current situation and highlights details we normally would have missed while our clever mind brings it all into a coherent summation.

If our senses themselves are corrupted then Water eyes is only going to give us more detailed information of what we see though the tainted lens.

So am I, but the best way to escape this is to resist all prompts to attack and instead try to look past the obvious illusion.
Taisho used a mirror, -OUR mirror- to cast a spell. And then we put that thing, with the spell still going on Nowhere, where, if I remember what XS said back when we were thinking of keeping Kusanagi, harmful things can more easily attack our Spirit/Soul.
Connect the Dots.
>>
[X] There has to be a way to be sure!

It's all too obvious that it might be trickery. The consequences of being wrong are horrible, yes, but you've lived through horrible before. It just hurts a lot and is exceedingly inconvenient. Still, the possibility that it is something terrible happening is too high to simply ignore it, because if it's just you, that's one thing. If it's your family dealing with this....

“Release me please. I don't really want to-” You have to bite back a cry of pain as a strip of flesh is torn from your right arm. “I don't want to hurt you, but I will if you do not release me now.” The creatures mostly fall silent except for the capering dancing shadow creature, who chants more loudly and gestures with her wand towards you. “What do you want? Tell me that at least.” You're struggling to remain calm, but the creature drooling acid on your left arm is reaching over your belly, long, dark claws extended.

As bad as the thought of evisceration is, the reaction of the worm-shadow in the background to the little dancing horror's tittering chant is terrifying – vast black shadows sweep out from the sides and the huge white maw opens wide, thunderous, alien words erupting that startle the others, even the one that is about to claw your belly open. The pressure on your left arm lightens, just enough....

[] Take advantage while you have the opportunity and escape.
[] It has to be an illusion. It has to be.

>>
[X] It has to be an illusion. It has to be.
[X] Illusion or not, you need time and less pain, so buy time.
[X] Risk a Barrier, even if you can't use Barrier Combat.
[+] Take out that damn mirror and see if you can make contact with a kami or Er Yin.

Three things occur to you in the immediacy of the moment.

One, you need time, and the only way to get a whole lot of that is to be in a Barrier.
Two, you placed the mirror that Taisho Ryoga sent an image of himself in into nowhere, so it might be fucking with you worse.
Three, you can't risk hurting any of them permanently just in case it is an illusion.

You twist your right hand and grab the ba gua mirror out of ~Nowhere~. Taisho Ryoga isn't in it, which is good, but it's not reflecting a true version of reality either, which is bad. Worse, the disgustingly fat shadow thing recoils with a gibbering howl of pain when you pull out the mirror....because demons can't stand ba gua mirrors. That's a big strike against these creatures.

So is leaving your legs free. Even as the creature eating bits off your right arm grabs for the mirror, you hurl it with deadly accuracy at the forehead of the little chanting demon, accounting for it trying to dodge the blow. Sure enough, it tries to duck aside and you bean the wooden frame off its head, rocking its head back and ending the tittering chant. The worm beast howls, and you grab the remnant strip of flesh half-torn from your arm and tear it off, hurling it into the worm beasts mouth as a distraction. The creature is definitely distracted – it throws itself aside and starts choking on the meat, thrashing madly.
>>
Anyone is a little bit bothered that our title became "oni slayer" ?

Fuck now I'm imagining Ryukuza with an orange mohawk and a battle axe
>>
>>36141110
I meant more specifically the overall mirror theme. If whoever did this is smart and creative enough, they could have designed the spell/curse to resemble a twisted mirror of our family in order to make Ryukusa believe it was an illusion.

Of course, that quickly devolves into a game 'i know, you know i know'
>>
>>36141165
Only now do the others around you start to react. You don't want to drag them into the barrier with you so your first order of business is to whip your legs up and around, grabbing the one to your left in a scissor lock and then hurling it across the cavern into the worm thing, to further dissuade the thing from annoying you. The big one starts to bring both massive hands down at your chest, attempting to pin you to the table, but you meet it's hands with yours, the fiery eyes widening as you use its hands to push yourself off the end of the table.

And out of contact with all the others.

You whip the barrier up and over yourself, a small one. It won't last long against a concentrated assault, but it will last long enough. “Matagama-no-Shitoki! Answer me!” Dead silence is all that responds – either its in the other reality you just left, whatever it is, or the illusion prevents you from communicating with the kami too. You call out to Er Yin through the void, which should bypass even a Barrier, but you receive nothing from that direction either.
>>
>>36141190
Yup. We ded.
>>
>>36141190
Assessing the injuries to your right arm, it looks pretty bad. The wound you cauterized has been torn open and there's a lot of raw flesh exposed. You're not bleeding of course, and you can't get sick, but the damage is pretty bad all on its own. Still, the arm is in usable shape – assuming you're not stuck in an illusion. Your left arm hurts, but it's not nearly as bad as your right. Your face and chest are still bruised form the fight with Goto as well, but otherwise your in relatively good shape. You even have enough Shen to handle maybe two movements of Barrier Combat, as opposed to one, which will leave you absolutely exhausted but puts you better off than you were after the fight.

[] Seal the wound again. It's gonna look ugly and hurt a lot.
[] Set a trap for when the Barrier comes down in the next moment or two.
[] Take out Ame-no-Omukade-no-Musume and get ready to fight.
[] Take out the oni-steel chain and get ready to catch that little shadow without harm.
[] Write a quick letter explaining your situation....and hope it comes out legibly if it's an illusion.

[X] Write a quick letter explaining your situation....and hope it comes out legibly if it's an illusion.
[+] Attempt to use Fire Eyes.

While typically dragonettes cannot use other elemental abilities, in a Barrier, in this form, you've managed some pretty strange tricks. Demigods have less limitations on that sort of thing, apparently. So, you attempt to use Fire Eyes to try and pierce the veils of illusion.

Which either works well, or is a horrible mistake, because that's not freakin' clearing up jack fuckin' shit!

Your wounded arm is still wounded, but it's horribly, horribly infected with blue-black fire and smoke. The line of living lightning along your chest in your true form is a dark greenish radiance that looks more like ghost fire than lightning, and your hands are burning in nimbuses of violet and umber fog. You're not all that sure you WANT to look in a mirror, who the fuck knows what you might see.

Blinking your Fire Eyes closed you yank a brush and some paper out of ~Nowhere~ and study the paper. Rather than trusting your eyes to write, you close your eyes and write by touch what has been happening to you for the last few minutes, every detail, and you include your worries as well. You feel the first impact against your tiny Barrier, and it can't last long under the assault of your family, though it would probably last longer against the demons or bakemono. Either way its a risk.

The oni-forged steel chain is ten feet of nearly indestructible metal. If the little one can destroy it, then there isn't any doubt its Kiku-chan. If not, then you have a prisoner....or she's trying not to antagonize you. Every time you see an out, it has a drawback and its really starting to piss you off! You write down – again not trusting your eyes – that you won't harm your prisoner; you just need information. You sign it with your mark – not your name, but the tattoo across your back and shoulders that marks you of Clan Ryo, as you arranged with Akari, with several minute changes that reveal you're you as opposed to faking it. Blindly of course.

You blow the ink dry and take the letter in one hand and the chain in your left....

[] Drop the Barrier yourself and take them by surprise.
[] Let them break in, see which one comes first.
[] Yank them into the Barrier for the surprise attack.
[] Take a moment to craft a non-lethal elemental trap.
[] Come out of the Barrier fighting hard and careful.

We can see if this is a proper illusion by checking how fast they break in, and if the one we associate with Akari does so first.

[X] Drop the Barrier yourself and take them by surprise.

You take a slow, calming breath and leap up, as you drop the barrier.

The worm creature is still down, the fat thing quivering and shaking near it. The little one is screaming and shaking her wand at you, which makes her the perfect target as you drop the letter and create a choke-chain loop out of the oni-forged chains and drop the loop around its waist. You double kick the two on the left and right respectively and land on the mat they were torturing – well, maybe torturing – you on.

The massive one behind you reaches for you but you yank the chain and catch the little shadow demon in your right arm. It holds out an arm and chatters loudly at the disgusting blob and the worm beast, but you have more important things on your mind. You make a short hop and flip over, jamming both your feet hard into the creatures chest, just above where you guess the solar plexus might be, sending it crashing back through some barricade or woodpile.

Even being careful, you have to trust that they're not going to be overcautious or undercautious. Akari-niji-chan and Kiku-chan have both trained for this, and you'd be surprised if Er Yin-sensei hasn't coped with possessed people before. Because if it is an illusion, then you may as well be possessed because that's how you're going to have to act for your own safety and that of your family.

A thought strikes you – Wan-wan might be your ticket to figuring out if you're under some kind of illusion or not. Because even if the world is a twisted and warped version of reality, a guardian lion-dog by the very definition is a divine creature and no illusion or possession can alter that. That might not stop him from eating you, but it would be one sure-fire way to determine of you're in some alternate world or hell dimension or you're just spiritually poisoned and hallucinating like a madwoman.

Of course that requires you get outside to find him.
>>
>>36142427
You bolt for the door, which is approximately where it would be if this was in fact your and Kiki-hime's room, taking a few seconds to stomp onto the hand of the big shadow as it reaches for you despite the blow you smashed into it. Shoko, perhaps? You can't risk finding out the hard way and you whisk through the door, slamming it behind you as the little shadow demon goes limp, making herself dead weight in your right arm.

The living has but one occupant, and you pray to Kami that this is all an illusion, because if it isn't you are very, very deep shit. Everyone knows about kitsune: practical jokers, illusionists, often holy creatures who serve Inari, magicians, kami. Very few remember the nogitsune....their downright dangerous and malicious youkai counterparts. And this is one fuckin' heaven of a nogitsune, playing with ghost fire and looking ready to kick your ass.

….kinda cute though.

[] Hammer it and escape fast.
[] You have a hostage, use it....the ultimate test.
[] “Back off or I'll take you out, hot shot.”
[] ….she does look kind of like an evil version of Yuuhi....
[] Ghost fire isn't like real fire – it's a Void thing too, so you can try and douse it....

[] Ghost fire isn't like real fire – it's a Void thing too, so you can try and douse it....

Two things make you hesitate.

The first is that the nogitsune didn't just blast you with ghost fire or attack you. The second thing, and possibly more important, is that despite having one arm free, the Shinto-costumed shadow creature hasn't attacked you. Being dead weight is troublesome but not particularly dangerous.

“Don't stand in my way, ghost-fox. You're no match for me.” The creature only shifts position, readying the ghost-fire as a weapon, it looks like.

The little shadow creature screeches at the nogitsune, which hurts your ears but that could be illusion or hallucination. To your surprise you can somewhat understand the nogitsune – if that is what the creature is.

“You return to your cage or I will put you down, animal.”

….thickly accented, and garbled in dialect, it's almost impossible to know if that's what she actually said or not. Still, this is different in other ways too. She looks real, not like the shadow demons. She's not attacking you despite the fact that if it is a demon, youkai, or bakemono you have captured, a youkai wouldn't care at all, even a smart one.

It's the impossible choice.

[] Trust that not-Yuuhi is Yuuhi and surrender.
[] Escape with your prisoner.
[] Throw your prisoner at the youkai and escape.
[] Take her out, you can't afford to be soul-blasted with ghost fire too.
[] Try calling on Matagama-no-Shitoki now

[X] Try calling on Matagama-no-Shitoki now!

You place your left hand against your chest, and call upon the kami of Matagama-no-Shitoki to aid you, eyes locked with those of the nogitsune. The nogitsune tenses, but the shadow demon holds out its hand, stopping the youkai from acting....

Someone pours napalm down your throat.

White fire bursts to life around your neck and along your breasts, the beads and cord of your wedding gift erupting into supernatural flames. While fire doesn't ordinarily bother you all that much, this isn't fire – it's pure spiritual power bound around your neck and stealing your breath. You drop the demon and try to grasp at the burning necklace, because you can't breathe at all and the pain is at least twelve times worse than platypus venom, and you would know.

It doesn't take long for you to black out, the shadow demon and the nogitsune coming for you, claws and talons and burning hands outstretched....

You wake on a futon on the floor in your sister's bedroom, the air filled with sandalwood and jasmine incense. Slowly, you blink at the circle of red paper lanterns hung from the ceiling, like the ones you used to see in town on festivals. You're dressed, and your right arm aches fiercely, but it doesn't really hurt. Your throat is sore, but you're neither on fire or trapped in some alien cave with shadow demons around you. Kiki-hime is asleep, laying across your stomach and Akari is on your left side, eyes closed, sitting seiza and totally alert.

[] How badly did I hurt everyone?
[] Is it really over?
[] Just pet Kiki-hime's head. Right handed.

[X] So, yeah, about that possession thing....

The hardest thing to cope with is the one you want out of the way first.

“How bad?”

Akari, dutiful, perfect subordinate that she is, knows precisely what you are asking. She doesn't even open her eyes as she speaks very quietly. “Kiki-hime was near to paralyzed when it all happened because of the mirror.” That magic vulnerability that Wood dragonettes have, of course. Obvious only in retrospect. “Er Yin-sensei's throat is sore, but you didn't injure her badly, because the sewing needle was slowed down by the thread.” The strips of meat from your right arm. Yui must have been sewing your wound closed, and the vast worm was Er Yin-sensei – no eyes, because she was blind, and her sorcery showing her as a large demon. A needle in the back of the throat would slow anyone down. “Yui and I barely noticed the attack, but we fell back anyways. Kiku-san tried to warn Shoko-san away, but you didn't hurt her either, other than bruises.” Your bed was probably destroyed. “Kiku-san is fine. You didn't hurt her at all, nor did you hurt Yuuhi-san.”

You look around the room slowly, taking not of the new shrine, upon which rests the sake, the incense, the bronze coin, and Matagama-no-Shitoki, as well as a small wooden stick with a bit of fox fur tied to it. Not something of yours. Kiku-chan is sitting in front of the altar, head bowed and silent, also seiza. You silently thank Matagama-no-Shitoki, and receive a pulse of warmth in your mind as a response.

“Delaying dutiful declaration demeans dragonettes....” you murmur softly, closing your eyes against the tears that threaten.

“My mistress must mourn minimally. You were possessed, aniki. Your Pearl or your heart was poisoned by some magic.” The carnelian eyes that open look at you fondly, and that is always worse than judgment. She doesn't react when you extricate your right hand from the bedding and gently stroke Kiki-hime's hair, the Wood dragonette's sleep becoming deeper and her face more soft, less worried.

“It's over then?” Akari nods, once. You don't shake your head, or disagree, nor do you agree and excuse what you have done. “I have stronger, more dangerous enemies, Akari. I can't afford to let that happen, and you know it.”

Kiku-chan speaks up softly. “You know anyone else in this house would have laid waste to everyone here, baka-aniki. Even though you were partially purified, the power was enough that it would have led others to kill. You barely hurt anyone at all.” It makes it so much worse that you hurt Er Yin after promising to protect her. Kiku-chan's forgiveness stings like acid. You doubt she would have hurt anyone either. Akari....Akari may have had the same training, but she's just so damn strong, not hurting people wouldn't be an option for her.

Tears. Kiki-hime and Shoko-san were crying, that's what the acid and the drool was.

[X] Bad thing, sad things, good things, true things.

Tears are not evil. Your sister taught you that, long, long ago. Before you met Akari. So you let them fall, keeping a tight rein on the other things that usually make crying a messy, horrible affair. Akari doesn't speak or try to comfort you other than to slip her hand under the blanket and lay her hand atop your left hand. Her eyes close, giving you your privacy as you take a shuddering breath. You control your voice carefully, speaking to the miko who sits turned away from you.

“Matagama Kiku....” She holds up her hand, and you stop.

“Kurao Goto stabbed your Pearl with his vision of how your world should be. He showed you what he believed to be the darkness in your spirit, which was only the evil in his. The poison incubated for an entire day before becoming active, and when it did become active, we were already performing the ceremony to remove the poison in the wounds his sword gave you.”

That makes more sense; you didn't think that your priestess would be caught off guard by something like that, especially with Er Yin present. “But why was Yuuhi-san waiting in the living room if you didn't know about the other curse?” You wipe your tears away and return to petting your wife's hair. She's purring in her sleep which makes Akari smile, even if you let a few more tears spill.

“That was me, aniki. I asked her to guard the house in case someone tried to attack while the ritual and the surgery were being done.” Akari's hand squeezes your and you turn your palm up, taking her hand in yours beneath the covers as Kiku-chan turns to face you all.

“It would have been bad if someone had interrupted, aniki-dragon.” Kiku-chan's delicate face is soft and her expression relaxed, though not truly gentle. “Your arm was badly injured, because of the poisons and the burns, as well as the cuts.”

You dismiss your tears, but your eyes are still welling with them. “The sword was another oni. Kurao Goto used his brother as a weapon. I killed them both, and sent their ghosts to Yomi, after making one warn their clan to stay away from us forever.” You extricate your hand from Akari's a little regretfully. “This is for you, from Yomi. A friend sent it.” She takes it and smiles as she reads the letterhead, then places the letter ~Nowhere~. Of course, that's not the only thing from Yomi that's haunted you.

>[x] Keep it to yourself for now – tell Kiku or your sister, later.
>[x] Ask Kiku-chan to make a shrine for Kurao Goto and Kurao Fundo , as honored enemies.

Yeah, that sounds like a good idea
>>
The only thing that deserves to be enshrined is Goto's foolishness.

[X] Admit to your sacrifice of Goto.
[X] Tell Kiku-chan to say some prayers of avoidance to Izanami.

You stroke Kiki-hime's hair, verifying that she's deep asleep. You're not ready to share this with her, but these two....they're Clan Ryo trained, but that really isn't important in this case. This is your best friend, and your priestess. And that, more than any other reason is why the next sentence spills from your mouth.

“I sacrificed the mikoto of Kurao Goto to Izanami in return for the purification ceremony her priestess gave my mikoto.”

You're not entirely surprised at the silence this brings. You glance at Akari sidelong, but her placid, gentle expression is there, and her hand returns to yours....marking your palm with a kanji before she grasps your hand gently under the blanket.

Kiku-chan isn't horrified either. She is a little thoughtful. “I will say some prayers to appease Izanami. It would probably be why his power was so effective even after you defeated him....”

You shake your head. “It was his final technique. It would have been powerful anyways.” THAT gets their attention. “I have more shen than other dragonettes – I have as much as a great Kami, or a Dragon. I just don't know how to use it effectively, I guess.” Not quite accurate – you have a way to use it, it just isn't an actual technique as much as it is a stopgap measure that works really freaking well.

Akari whispers softly, “That's terrifying, aniki....” You look at her, your eyes wide. She does look frightened.

Kiku-chan is hiding her mouth behind her sleeve and looks at you with wide, gleaming eyes. “Do not tell anyone that, baka-dragon! Susano-Oh might become upset!” Her alarm is quite genuine.

You nod, the exhaustion and emotional tension taking it's toll, as your eyelids become heavy.

Kiku-chan stands up and walks over to the head of the futon, and crouches. You glance to the side, and she lays her tiny hand on your forehead. “Sleep, Ryukusa-dono. You earned it. Yui is safe, and no one is hurt.” You simply close your eyes, though you disagree entirely. “Akari-san, keep watch for a little longer. I'll send Yui-san in shortly.” You feel, rather than see your best friend nod as Kiku-chan slips out, sliding the door open and swinging it shut.

Kiki-hime makes a soft, sleepy noise and you agree with her silently; but that doesn't erase the thought of what Akari-niji-chan wrote on your palm moments ago.

~Good.~

Shen is a measure of spiritual power and your life force simultaneously. Spiritual damage doesn't specifically reduce your Shen unless it is specifically meant to do so, however. A spirit-child instinctively and automatically safeguards enough to sustain their life, but using Shen is still exhausting, and spiritual poisons can attack your Shen, causing other kinds of problems (possession or sin, sometimes curses). An attack which destroys Shen can kill you if it reduces it to nothing, but it will heal over time and such attacks are things that only Gods and sorcerers/priests etc. can manage and control, and in the latter case it takes a massive toll on the people who perform such an act.

Oh. the shadows:

Looming tall - Shoko.
Left hand, slender: Akari.
Right hand, plump cannibal: Yui.
Disgusting fat blob: Kiki.
Little miko shadow: Kiku.
Worm shadow: Er Yin.
Nogitsune: Yuuhi. Yuuhi's nature as a youkai-child made her look almost ordinary, because she is literally a nightmare creature already. Rie would have looked glorious since she was entirely a youkai. Wan-wan would have looked like Wan-wan except more so.

God thing we never made it that far then

Please anon they are wonderful oases in the barren landscapes of our lovers' chests (no offense).
>>

Ryukusa isn't exactly flat, and Er Yin's might be bigger.
>>
>>36145625
Well yes but Ryukusa isn't her own lover. I couldn't remember Er Yin off-hand though I did assume she had a decent size at least. Even so.

Er Yin.
