You are in a comfortable house, whose limited size isn't felt thanks to how well it takes advantage of its spaces and uses lighting and well-placed windows to give the idea of space even though there isn't much of it, objectively. You, Tahenohan and Bryld are spread over two sofas along with Astreya, the wizard you've been hearing about for a while, who turned out to be a kind, almost motherly person with a really foul-mouthed and mean demon familiar; the sofas are in an L shape in the middle of the main room, which also hosts a library that covers the entirety of a wall. Being somewhat circular, it'd be better to say that books take about a third of the available wall space. The rest is windows and sliding doors, and a rather tight staircase leading to the first floor, which should be more like an attic from what you've seen outside.

Bryld has been fidgeting nervously ever since you mentioned being a priestess of Ishtar, and glancing at you and Astreya with the clear, visible feeling that she doesn't belong here. At least Tahenohan has stopped browsing continuously through the books and sat down, if anything because there's coffee. It's hot and has a strong, crisp aroma without tasting burnt at all.

"As you know, the last Fomor wars ended ten years ago, and they swept through the Shadow Marches as well, destroying everything except for Reboldeux and its outlying area, up to the point of changing the geography", Astreya explains, following up on her intention of telling you something she believes to be useful to your divine mission, "While most of us humans are focused on the disasters wrought to our civilisation and are now busy with the Reconquista, the monsters and other wild beings had a hard time as well".

She sets the cup down on the low table and crosses the fingers on her hand, "Recently, the military expedition fought with a gnoll army lead by a Fomor-controlled chieftain. Fortunately they won, but I fear this is just the tip of the iceberg".

>Continue
>>
After the somewhat gloomy words, Astreya brightens herself and the mood with a kind smile, "But don't worry, our heroes are very competent, I'm sure they will be able to handle any danger that comes their way. What we should do... What I think ordinary people like you and your friends can do, is help take care of all the overflowing problems".

She takes the cup back up again and takes a long sip. Bryld takes the chance to drink a bit too, while Tahenohan had finished her own cup a long time ago. At least coffee seems to have a soothing effect on her. "There is a lake to the North-east of here, and it extends pretty far both North and South, so if you go East from here you'll still find a part of its waters. Past that lake there's a mountain range, there's a nest of ironhide wyverns there so I don't recommend crossing the lake if you're going to explore".

Talking about murderous monsters with such a bright smile is odd, but you sure she just means to be reassuring, "There's harpies around too. They got off better than most other monsters but they took casualties too, it's still not as bad as for the arachne", she lets out a sigh, "I don't know their exact numbers before the war, but there's only three left now. One is far to the North, one is in the mountains and one is somewhere South or South-east of here, I still have to meet her".

A moment of silence follows, then Astreya finds her smile again, "There's also alraune around. I think the Fomors wanted to hunt and burn all those they could find, on purpose, I don't know for what reason. You should still be able to meet some, but... Like with all monsters, the hand of war left a bad scar on them, and some might have died to human hands too".

She pauses, looking at you, "You should be careful. Not afraid, but careful".

The harpies are an immediate concern to the village, and we've seen signs of the arachne and might be more lkely to run into them. I'm also curious about why the Fomor were specifically targeting alarune, but that can wait.

"Tell me more about the harpies", you choose to begin with the part that can move faster and more frequently, and also the kind that travels in flocks and might happen to start raping people left and right. Well, that's mostly a stereotype and you're not sure how much of that is true, but better safe than sorry.

"Harpies live in flocks and move often, which kept them safer than other monsters during the Fomor war, but they still suffered losses and especially the migratory species became disrupted", she explains, "Some flocks used to cross the Crystal sea to take advantage of our spring and summer and then moved back when autumn came, but the disaster that struck this continent made such travels less frequent or outright killed those who made it, so it's mostly the indigenous species left", she pauses, "They... Shouldn't be dangerous, at least not to a group like yours, but some might be mistrusting of humans".

"What about the arachne, then?".

"The arachne are very few in number and facing potential extinction from this continent", she lets out a sorry sigh, "Three females survived, and two are eager to come out and meet humans but are still a bit shy. The third one... I couldn't find her until now, but she has to be around somewhere. If you do, try and be as calm and understanding as you can, she has to be terrified of other beings with all that happened to her and her dears".

"I-is it that bad?", Bryld asks, talking as if though she has something in her throat.

"They all saw their families, their brothers and sisters, die one by one, at the hands of both fomors and humans. They survived because they were protected, so they could one day reproduce and not let their line go extinct, but surviving carries guilt sometimes", she looks at you straight in the eye, "Please try and be understanding".

"What about the alraune? And why were they targeted by fomors?".

Astreya sets her now empty cup of coffee down on the table and furrows her brows a little, "This is just my personal opinion so take it with a pinch of salt... I think it's because they have fought against their war effort. Allow me to explain: most war machines and temporary fortifications are built on wood, and alraune need plenty of very large woods to live in comfortably. This isn't difficult with the tropical jungles, but if the fomors take control of many gnoll tribes and then proceed to make them work on the double for a war effort... It would make sense for them to be angry and fight back".

"Wait", you pause for a moment, struck by an idea, "Won't the Reconquista also cause us to invade their jungles? We're building shacks like crazy right here".

Astreya nods, "It's possible. You would need to find them and try to communicate, if anything to make sure we don't invade their territory too far. We would need the priest of a nature deity too, that would be handy, so we can make sure we can replant all that we consume, but...", she sighs, "There's so much to do and I alone am but one person. I would be really grateful if you could help out. Just... Be careful, some of them might think of us as enemies".

"Hey, hey", Tahenohan raises her hand, smiling at Astreya, "Where's your spellbook?".

"Where is yours?".

And they start laughing. It must be some kind of wizard joke.

"By the way, can you tell me anything more about yourself?", you decide this is the best moment to intervene, "We barely know you, after all".

She chuckles a bit more while nodding, "Sure, what do you wish to know?".

"What kind of magic can you do?", you have to admit it's mostly a matter of curiosity, but it's still handy to know what you can expect out of this woman. Also, you still don't know much about wizards, even though you're travelling with one of them.

"Ah, well, of course there's that spell I got my title from", she chuckles merrily, "The one I use to travel quickly, flying in the sky at night time. But contrarily to what some might have said, it doesn't depend on the stars. And it's certainly not derived from elven magic", she shakes her head firmly, you feel this is important to her even though you don't really understand why.

"Oh, oh, anything else?", Tahenohan asks, clearly very eager, "Can you shoot lightning bolts? I never could. I managed to do something with ice, but I can't quite get to the level of the Dolph Strash".

"The Dolph Strash isn't easy", Astreya blinks, her look somewhat surprised, "It's commendable for you to even try. But no, I can't do it either... Though lightning? That's more within my expertise", and she chuckles, "But I'd rather not shock anyone if I can help it. I prefer to use faerie fire, though if I really want to burn someone I might just go with the fox fire".

"Eeeeh? That sounds so cool! I did the icicle fall once, but it's really tough to control correctly".

"Right, I heard it has a huge, blind spot in front of you".

"But mundanes don't know that!".

And they laugh again. Wizards.

"Which monsters did you meet in person?", you ask, trying to pull the conversation back on track.

"Mh... Tama and Arianna, the two surviving arachne, respectively North and East of here. I also met Susanna- Ah, but keep this a secret", she bends closer to the table, lowering her voice, "She's an ogre magi. Don't worry! Even though she's a giant she's no fomor, just... Most people won't understand, so don't spread this around, okay?".

You nod, "What about Yomi? What's his problem?".

Astreya blinks, then smiles, "Oh, him...".

"You see, when you summon a demon to serve as a familiar, you don't really control what kind of demon you're invoking", Astreya explains, getting everyone's attention, even Bryld's, despite her obvious reluctance to listen, "Demons are beings of passion and soul, their physical bodies a mere commodity they use to interact with the world, be it the Netherworld or ours, and they are divided in different types. Yomi, for example, is an Empusa; he's practically a sadist, he enjoys teasing others and trying his best to make them feel miserable, he literally thrives on verbal and emotional abuse".

"But why did you summon him, of all people?", you ask, the memory of his harsh words still fresh in your mind, and in Bryld's too, whose bunny ears droop noticeably at his mention, "Couldn't you just send him back and try again?".

"I... Could have, but you have to consider two things", she makes a strange smile, almost embarrassed, "The first is that this doesn't help your reputation with the Netherworld, if you summon one to be your familiar and then send him back, you might have nobody answering your next summons, or you might get worse people, especially if they look better at first", she stops, then resumes, "The second is, well, it's your personality, your soul itself, that calls out to attract a demon. Believe it or not, but the ritual is made to call for someone as compatible to you as possible".

You all three stare at her until she blushes slightly and chuckles, "... Please don't get the wrong idea about me, I- I am no sadist, I swear".

"Can't you do something to keep him more in control?", you ask.

"I can, and I do", she assures, "But a demon is a demon. You cannot change its nature. You must not think of them as ordinary mortals, that would be a grave mistake".

We don't use the same kind of magic that she does. And she must be a masochist.
>>
"How long are you going to stay here?", you wonder for how long you'll be able to count on her help, should you need it again.

"I don't know", she sincerely answers, tilting her head to the side a bit. You can't help but be reminded of just how large her horns are, to the point every little movement of hers appears much heavier just because of them, even though her hair is so smooth and silky with just a few moments of brushing. She is completely different from Tahenohan, whose hair is messy even after you just finished brushing it for twenty minutes, and whose bed hair is nothing short of legendary "For as long as I will be needed, I guess. Considering the Reconquista and the peculiar situation of the Shadow Marches, it might be for a while".

"Can you... Teach us magic?", you tentatively ask.

Astreya looks at you, then at Tahenohan, and seems to ponder the issue for a moment. She even gives Bryld a glance but she looks away immediately and hides behind you, making the wizard give up looking for eye contact with your cartographer, "Mh. I don't think I can. I am a demonologist, I was given and taught magic by my familiar, I could teach you how to summon one yourself... If you really, really want to, but... I would of course need to tell you to be very careful. It takes an amount of dedication that is not easily found in people. All magic does, relying on demons isn't the "easy path", as I sometimes hear some people say".

"Do you have anything we could use in our quest?", you then decide to ask, just to be sure.

"Uh... I don't think so", she frowns, "I... Think I have an old dagger. It's magical, but neither powerful or very useful", she then looks at you, frowning even more, "... I don't think you need a weapon, though. You don't look like a warrior, and giving a weapon to one that can't use it is... Very dangerous".

I think it would be beneficial, honestly, specially because of the demonic heritage. A familiar can't keep information secret from its master, can it?

I think it would be good for Lillith.
>>
>>36163794
You're forgetting about Tahe's story of her master summoning a demon to run another guy out of business and ended with her and her master working FOR that demon in order to at least get their clothes back.
>>
>>36163853

Well, tahe's master was a idiot anyway. Lillith is good at dealing with others, and honestly, do you think MP would give Lillith something that would disrupt the quest?
>>

>do you think MP would give Lillith something that would disrupt the quest?
Yeeess?
I mean, we won't be killing ourselves or anything, but we wouldn't get off scot free.
>>
>>36163902
First, we have no need for demon summoning, nor really the time to do so. Second, while I do trust MP to not fuck us over, I imagine they want us to use SOME common sense: asking to learn demonology will likely alienate us from Bryld, who is already skittish about the demon and the fact that we're a cultist of Ishtar.
>>
"You've helped us out quite a bit already. Is there anything we can do to help?", you also consider asking her how to teach you to summon a demon, but Bryld looks a little pale back there; considering she just got a harsh treatment from a demon no less, you decide to save the topic for a possible later, more private chat in case.

"Mh... Well, there is something you could do for me", she concludes after a bit of thinking, "Could you inform me if fairy presence, if you ever come across some?".

"... Fairy presence?", you ask.

"Ah, well, you see, it's complicated, but I have a bad reputation with fairies. I-it's all a misunderstanding, I swear!", she makes an uncomfortable smile, "And I'm so terribly sorry for their sylvawave repeater, but I didn't do it on purpose and I certainly wasn't trying to sabotage their queen. I-I think there are some, trying some old fairy roads out and seeing if they're safe, but they won't approach me and I don't want them to get the wrong idea, so it's... It's better if you approach them for me".

"What do you want me to do?".

"Apologize", she sighs, "Apologize for me, and ask what I can do to earn their forgiveness, I really don't want to stay in bad terms with them, not for a stupid incident like that one".

"Eeeeh? What did you do to anger fairies?", Tahenohan sounds surprised, "They're always so kind, even my master didn't manage to anger them and he's been doing nothing but telling them lies to get their dust for a scam back when I was with him".

"I-it's a bit embarrassing, I...", she smiles, blushing, "I... Accidentally crashed on one of their sylvawave repeaters and ruined several months of work. I-I'm sorry! But sometimes my signature spell doesn't work as intended, I'm still trying to perfect it".

"I can do that", you agree, figuring that talking to fairies should be easy; you don't know much about them but they should be everything but dangerous. Hell, technically speaking, they're allied with the kingdom of Rune, or at least in good relationship, although you have no idea what that implies, "By the way, what's a... Sylvawave repeater?".

"I'm not sure myself", Astreya looks a little embarrassed at that, "I think it's something they use to keep their communications active? Or was it something to study the land? Or to gather information about woods to see whether they're enchanted or not? I-I have no idea, I'm sorry".

"Are you sure it won't sound cheap coming from me? I didn't break anything".

"I know", she looks down, fidgeting nervously with her hands on her tights, "But they're avoiding me, and I don't know what else to do. Please, I... Just want to let them know I'm sorry and I wish to remedy what I did".

Just by looking at her you can feel she's sincerely sorry about the incident, "Anything I should know about fairies?".

She looks up, and seems to brighten a little, "Well, as you know, ever since they became organized into a kingdom, with an actual queen, they have made great steps forwards. They are much more advanced, in general organization, they have become more knowledgeable about the world, in the fields of science, they have become adequate engineers and are more... Well... Militarized", she smiles, "Oh but don't worry, they only fight in self-defence, they won't do anything as long as you don't make them feel threatened, they're actually very friendly", she pauses, looking at you, "Uh... And, well, they can speak Midgaardian, so don't worry about that, just... Remember they often have a thick... Accent".

You can't help but wonder what she means with that, but it shouldn't be a problem.

You thank Astreya for her time and stand up, along with all of your companions. You shake her hands, that feel a little cold to the touch, Tahenohan does too, and so does Bryld, although she only shakes with her fingers, without grasping properly with the whole palm.

"By the way, I have to remind you Agnes' offer for the night", you tell her, and she chuckles, nodding. "I do remember", she assures you, "I promise I will come, but I won't bring my pajamas".

You wonder if that was required in the first place or if you missed something.

Regardless, you leave the wizard's house and stretch a little. Bryld seems to look a little better once outside, she's not as pale and the day is getting warmer as it slowly but constantly advances, although noon is still a little far. You remember that Luna should be busy talking to the village chief about all of her projects and/or busy with the drawing board. You, instead, have this appointment with the volunteers' captain tonight, along with Astreya, meaning that departing today for adventure and exploration wouldn't be very wise.

Still, you have things to keep you busy with: your population census, for one thing, and even if that doesn't take you all day (or more than one), there's the construction effort going on where a pair of extra arms are always welcome, even better if they're young and strong.

In the end, the day is yours to...

>>
You really should take advantage of this situation to do the population census, since you can't do it once you leave, and you'll be away for a few days at the very best, meaning you can't just stop and rest no matter how nice that would feel.

You think you can afford to have Tahenohan have a look at the outskirts; being alone and everything you recommend her to not go far and certainly not to poke her head into any woods, especially not after the news about the alraune and the giant cobwebs you've spotted yesterday.

As you wonder what to do with Bryld, you notice that she fidgets a little while Tahenohan hops away, merrily humming a tune, looking at her back and then at you. "Uhm...", she goes, sounding uncertain but at least not afraid.

Well, you wanted to have a moment to talk to her about all that she's learned about you and Tahenohan in but half a morning, so her approaching you is actually beneficial to your plans. You decide to give her breathing space and wait for her to talk to you on her own terms.

"I... I don't want to sound like I'm intruding or anything, it's just curiosity, really, but...", she keeps fidgeting nervously, glancing at you and then looking down and away, several times, "Uhm... It's about Tahenohan".

"What about her?", you ask in the most diplomatic way possible.

"Are you... You know?", she asks, but you don't know. So you wait for her to gulp and muster a bit more courage, "Are you, you know... A couple?".

>"Yes".

"We're not", you honestly answer, "But why are you asking?".

"Oh, oh no, nothing", she smiles, sounding a bit embarrassed but still rather comfortable, It's because you were so close and familiar with each other. You know, same bed, same shower, no shame... I know Tahenohan is a bit... Unique, so I wasn't sure if it was...", she chuckles and shrugs, "I'm sorry, I'm just being silly".

She's certainly unique, you have to give that to her, "I like her, I really do, but I still don't know if I like her that way; right now we're only good friends. Maybe one day things will change, but right now we're just good friends".

"Right", she smiles, "I'm sorry, I didn't want to pry, I just... I was so curious, I...".

"By the way", you take advantage of this moment, before you start to work, in order to make sure Bryld doesn't have any actual issues she isn't talking about, "About what you've heard in Astreya's house...".

"Ah! Ah, n-n-no, i-it's nothing", she gulps nervously, paling a little as she forces herself to smile, "I- I really- I'm not thinking- I'm not having second thoughts about coming with you, I swear".

"Are you sure?", her bunny ears tremble a bit and her smile isn't steady, but you can see in her eyes that she's trying her best to keep a much more concerned, and possibly obtuse, part of her from taking over. You see that she consciously feels like trusting you, but there's an instinct in her that's telling her to reconsider, and she's trying to resist it.

"I-I am", she gulps nervously again, "R-really, don't worry, it will pass, I was... I admit I was a bit shocked, but it's okay, I-I am but a newbie, to everything, don't concern yourself with all the little... Things that scare me", and she chuckles a bit, to relieve her own tension.

I don't agree on trying to convert her. However, I do want to help her understand us and why we are a devotant of Ishtar. It could help in having her trust us, as she's torn from trusting us and fleeing from us right now.
>>
>>36165149
>>36165213

Firstly, why not?

Secondly, I don't think Ishtar would care about this, actually. She seems pretty chill and ok with an unorganized worship. I think that simply by making people more open minded of about her and doing away with the rumours/bad fame is enough. Promoting monsterfolk x human/werefolk relationship will have a positive inpact as well.
>>
"What do you know about Ishtar?", you ask, knowing that most likely she knows either nothing or all of the wrong things.

"N-not much. She's the goddess of monsters, right?", she asks with a mixture of shame and fear, but then tries to smile, "Well, she certainly is, considering what you were talking about...".

"Yes", you confirm, "But that doesn't mean I antagonize humans. Quite the contrary, I am here explicitly to avoid conflicts".

"I know", she surprisingly says, showing some confidence that must be coming out right in this moment, "I've heard you and Astreya talk. I told you already what I think about you: you're very caring, you always think of others, and you are kind with everyone. I- I was uncomfortable because I know nothing of magic and monsters and- And I admit I am afraid of many things, especially those I don't know, but...", she touches your arm, her slightly trembling fingers grasping your sleeve until she steadies, "But you actually just showed me I was right. Even now you're caring about me, I am... I am very thankful of that".

You pat her hand and she smiles, she seems to be a lot calmer than before, "We can talk more this evening if you want to, my door is always open".

"Oh, no, no no", she shakes her head firmly, "There's nothing much to talk about, really, and tonight we're supposed to attend a party, I don't want you to pull out of there just to assure me that you mean no harm... I already know you do, I'm just", she sighs, "I'm just a cowardly little bunny, b-but I'm trying my best to change".

>"We can talk after the party".
>"Why don't you go with Tahenohan? She'll love to have your company".

Pat her with the comfiness of a thousand suns
>>
>>36165131
Just a small note about "conversions".

Monotheism isn't really a thing in this setting. Worshipping multiple gods is normal, so there's no need for "conversions" or anything. Most gods just want to have some rites and practices observes and offerings, and many mortals do so when it's convenient or when they need the favour of a god.

You can worship Ishtar when you need to without the need of anything like a "conversion".

>>

Girl's 44 and has more adventuring experience than anyone in our party. If anything she should be the one to go alone.
>>
You smile and pat Bryld on the head.

Her brown hair is soft and smooth, very different from Tahenohan's wavy tangle; your fingers have an easier time brushing through, patting and following the shape of her head and soft, somewhat rounded cheeks. She giggles a little as you pat her, closing her eyes as your fingers inevitably brush close to her bunny ears and even between them; you feel the very soft and puffy fur on the inside as your fingers caress the edges of her canals leading to the eardrums, which must be somewhat sensitive as she visibly shivers as you do so.

The ears too are very soft: you only briefly touch the rosy insides before she twitches and you instinctively open your hand to let go of her ear as it flips about, making you be more careful and only brushing the outer fur, of the same colour as her hair. It is short and frisky but it still feels soft to the touch and makes her ears perk visibly as you touch them.

You brush down and caress her face a couple more times, and feel that she doesn't quiver any more, not even lightly. "Why don't you go and join Tahenohan?", you offer her, "I'm sure she will love to have your company".

She nods, pulling back from your patting with a smile, "Yes, that is a good idea, I'll leave you to your work", she looks at you up and down and smiles again, "Thank you".

You look at her as she hurries into a quick jog, her puffy bunny tail bouncing slightly as she skips lightly along the grass. She has a pretty good pace when she puts her heart into it, you wonder if all were-hares are like that, and also just how fast she can be if she tries.

But right now, you have your own thing to do. You pull out your book and inkpen and get ready to write down the name and age of the inhabitants of New Royo.

It's done and it was good. Ties can be broken by Qm's choosing one or the other, no need for tiebreaker votes. Not everything has to be decided by players.

>>36165616
Yes, it is a draw, but in the interest of keeping the thread going I have picked the option that I felt was closer to how Bryld was feeling considering how the conversation developed.

I won't always call for tie breaking, especially if it's something that I feel has a natural flow with what's going on in game. And in this case, I don't think it was worth calling tie breaking for.

Being a censor is tough work.

You never talked to that many people in one day. It was easy at first, you just had to introduce yourself, explain what you're doing on whose behalf, and occasionally why it's important to do so. It's not like anyone refused to answer, but things got more complicated as the day went on.

The first obstacle was the gossip army, those women doing nothing all day while their men were working. Not all women, there are also those that either help work themselves or actually keep themselves busy with something different than gossiping, and there's men that aren't busy constructing shacks too... But the point is that once you got snagged with that group they weren't going to let you go.

On one side it was a good thing, because they practically knew the names and ages of everyone else. On the other, it was terrible because they were trying their darndest to get to know all about you so you could become gossip fuel instead of answering your questions.

The second obstacle was the fact that you were starting to get tired and confused as the day progressed, and it took you all of the afternoon to correct the mistakes, the double entries and the names and ages you got wrong.

Good thing you started with a village of one hundred sixty six people. It would be more if you also counted the volunteers, but you decided not to because they aren't residents, they're followers of the military expedition that have been only temporarily assigned to this place.

You never would have believed you could get this tired doing nothing but talking to people. You drank a lot and you still feel thirsty, and your legs and arms feel sore for all the standing and writing.

You're really starting to look forward to that tea party, if anything because you need to sit down and cool off.

You decide to look for your travelling companions before heading anywhere; after all you're technically their leader and it falls to you to make sure they're functioning well, especially when it comes to working together.

Even though it's getting dark and hard to see, you still manage to spot them, or rather hear them as you recognize their laughing amongst all the sounds that are coming from where the majority of people gather to have dinner together.

You see them come towards you, their lantern lit and flashing you, swinging a lot more as it quickens its approach once they illuminate your familiar figure, making you cover your eyes for a moment before you see Tahenohan's manic smile clearly again.

"We had fun!", she announces, "We walked around and picked some flowers!". Not exactly what you asked them to do, but you guess at least they bonded a little.

"We've seen mushrooms too, near trees and bushes", Bryld explains, "But we didn't pick them because neither of us are familiar with mushrooms from around here. We don't want to accidentally poison someone, and I heard mushrooms are very dangerous if you're not very confident".

You've been told the exact same thing, so you can't help but agree. It's also nothing to be concerned about, really, there's still plenty of easily found food around, as those that gather it in the village can confirm. Actually, you think the locals routinely walk farther than your two friends just did tonight.

"Are you ready for tonight's tea party?", you ask them.

"I am!", says Tahenohan.

"I am too", agrees Bryld with a smile.

You all go and fetch Astreya at her house so that she doesn't have to walk those five minutes alone in the dark. Not that she's in any danger, but you feel like you owe her a bit of courtesy, it's the bare minimum to be civil after all.

You reach her small but cozy house and knock, and she opens the door with a smile. From the well-lit insides, thanks to what you presume to be magical lights, you see that she's wearing another long greenish robe, but comfortable to walk around in as it's quite open on the front, showing off a rhomboidal cut window to her cleavage that isn't actually impressive as she's visibly small-breasted, but it also helps her show off her form-fitting leather pants, which are rather shiny, even in this lighting.

"I'm ready!", she announces, turning aside to fit through the door and exit her house. Yomi is sprawled on the sofa, barely peeking his head up as she leaves, "You goin' with that dyke? Hell you four must be desperate for a fuck".

"I'll be back later in the night, Yomi", she kindly answers, completely ignoring the comment, "Don't wait for me and keep the house, okay?".

"Go fuck yourself in the ass with that staff of yours", he answers, which she takes as something like "take care" as she closes the door behind her. You notice she doesn't actually have a staff with her.

"She's been asking me out for a while, actually. Oh, and don't be concerned if captain Agnes looks a bit too girly or... Interested in girls, it's just the way she is", she smiles, and doesn't look concerned at all, despite the warning.

you're probably overthinking things anon

thats just what Yomi wants you to do
>>
"Can you tell us something about captain Agnes?", you ask on the way, "I met her yesterday but only briefly".

"She's a very good woman. A good knight, a good soldier and a strong fighter", Astreya nods, talking as if she knows her fairly well, "Well this is something I just heard at least, her reputation so to speak. I haven't known her for much longer than you did, about a week, but I can see in the way she treats her subjects that she really wants to see them grow into actual warriors".

"So she's a caring person?", for a moment you were about to ask if the volunteers didn't count as warriors, but you found that question to be a bit rude.

"Well, most volunteers are just that: young people who wanted to offer their able bodies to the Reconquista, but almost none of them have any real combat training. Agnes has plenty of that and she does her best to share, and make her subjects gain experience on the field, but she also knows their limits and doesn't want them to lose their lives trying", she gives a smile of appreciation, "I like that about her. I've also heard she is very fiery and eager to fight, but once she takes her armour off she's very... Girly. I don't know how else to put it", she chuckles.

"Does she like women?", Tahenohan asks the question you didn't know whether to ask or not.

"Yes", is Astreya's simple answer, "To put it in the same way her volunteers told me, she is "straight like a rainbow", or something to that effect", she chuckles, "But don't worry, she isn't going to be inappropriate. Well maybe a bit grabby, but she'll pull back if you ask her to stop, she's still a gentlewoman".

Well this tea party is certainly going to get interesting.

As you return to the village, you see that Agnes has a room in one of the more permanent structures, a small house reserved just for her, the captain of the volunteer brigade. It's not large, about Astreya's size, but it does look a lot better than the shacks all around it.

You knock on the door, and it is almost immediately opened by Agnes, wearing twintails like the first time you met her, but with a pink pajama shirt instead of armour. "Welcome, welcome!", she motions for you to come inside and closes the door once you're all in. She isn't wearing anything past that pajama shirt that you can see, but it's long enough to cover her down to mid-thigh, giving ample show to her slender, strong legs, smooth and soft-looking but whose powerful muscles show in healthy bulges every time she walks.

The rest of her figure, even if hidden by a girly pajama, speaks of the body of a warrior. Although she isn't bulky or heavy in frame, her shoulders show that she's used to wear armour and fight in it, even for extended periods of time. It almost clashes with how she appears right now, humming and bringing a tea tray over like a young wife serving post-dinner tea to her guests.

The house itself is a single-room deal, with a small door that leads to what you presume to be the toilet, even though there's still no sewer system in this village. The kitchen is relegated to a corner with a small but working pantry, a bed is on the opposite corner, simple and featuring a light, blue bedsheet that doesn't seem to have been used much. Knowing how hot it is even at night you presume she just sleeps on top of it.

You all sit on a circle of cushions in the middle of the room. There's no tables nor chairs around, but you're not uncomfortable, it's kind of like being in the caravansary again. Agnes serves the steaming, red tea in each cup, also pushing a small woven basket with several cocoa biscuits.

"I'm afraid I don't have sugar", she apologizes with a smile, "I'm sorry, I didn't bring any". The others reassure her that it's okay.

She then looks up at you, clapping her hands, "So, how was your day?".

"Tiring, but I managed", the opinion comes quite naturally as you are reminded of the entire day spent talking to people who would answer, but never the questions that you were asking, and sometimes you were wondering if they were talking to you or just talking and you happened to be there and believing you were in a conversation, while you actually were just the victim of a very long rambling, "It was very educational too, in a way".

"Oh, I see", Agnes does smile at you, then turns to Astreya, "And how was yours?".

"I mostly rested, I've been out and about for most of the past days, especially at night, I had plenty of sleep hours to catch up with", she chuckles, "I've been very lazy today".

"You have plenty of books too", Agnes comments, "I'm going to take a day off myself, earlier or later, and come to your place and we can just lie on the sofas and read and do nothing all day".

"Well my house is never even locked, so feel free to", Astreya smiles.

"Pity about your familiar, how do you even manage to stand him?".

The wizard shrugs, a smile still lingering on her lips, "We've known each other for a long while. We're like an old married couple by now, we keep saying we hate each other but in the end we're still together".

That's a strange image considering neither of them look to be of any discernible age category, but you have, in fact, to consider that she might be a lot older than you may think; possibly older than Tahenohan, who is staring curiously at the tea.

"How was your day, captain?", you then ask Agnes.

"Ah, just call me Agnes", and she pats your knee with a bright smile, "I inspected the troops today, just to make sure they weren't getting too comfortable. I understand they needed labour down here but my volunteers have to be reminded they're here to fight, not to be used at everyone else's convenience".

"Are they behaving well?", the image of that one girl who was just dragging herself along pretending to work instantly surfaces in your memory. Maybe she was just tired on that day, but then again it sure doesn't give the whole brigade a good impression.

"Yes, they're doing great!", Agnes confirms with a bright smile, "They're training, they're helping, they're full of life and youthful confidence and I'm sure I can rely on them when I will need to". She sounds maybe a little too optimistic, but you also consider that you might have seen just one isolated bad example last night.

"Do you like it here?", you then ask, keeping the conversation going to be a courteous guest.

"Yes! It's actually a very nice place!", she smiles, sitting comfortably and a bit tomboyishly too. You can't quite spy under the pajamas, she's not that unguarded, meaning she is aware of being a girl even if she's with nothing but girls, but from the way she moves you're almost certain she's wearing underwear, "It's warm, so you don't have to cover up too much and can go to bed like this and still feel good! Granted, it's a bit bad when you're around all day in armour, but I'm used to that".

The tea tastes good, you think it's made with hibiscus, but you can't be sure, your knowledge of tea doesn't run that deep.

"By the way", Bryld asks, almost surprisingly taking initiative, "Capta- Agnes. Have you seen any strange plants around?".

Agnes thinks about it for a moment, making odd thinking faces as she idly picks up her cup, "Mh... Well, most plants are still strange to me, even if I've been there for a while. I don't know, nothing that really caught my attention, no", she shrugs, "But then again I ride when I patrol, so I don't go in deep woods or anything".

Makes sense.

"I'm sure you have interesting stories to tell us about the military expedition", you tell Agnes, "Like that time when you killed a troll with a single hit".

"Ah, that? Oh well people always remember the smallest detail. There's many small acts of heroism going on in a melee, people just happen to remember some over others, but it's mere coincidence. Or, in that case, very explodey", she admits, "Though I have to admit myself, that one Magnum Break was well-placed".

"What about the other heroes we keep hearing about?", even Tahenohan's curiosity is piqued.

"Well I'm not around them much, I have other responsibilities, although I wish I could leave more often, but I remember they single-handedly defeated a colony of Aboleths. Again, I wasn't there though", she sighs, "It's good that the king trusts me enough to be the captain of the volunteer brigade, but sometimes I feel like I'm a bit away from the action".

You can't blame her, she does sound a little unsatisfied, and looks distracted, too. Actually, on a better look, she seems very distracted by Bryld's bunny ears, towards which she extends a hand, "Can I... Can I touch them?".

"Oh, uhm...", Bryld blinks, looking at her hand, "... Sure?".

And Agnes does, gently touching her ears, that twitch at first until she gets used to the contact and lets her slender fingers brush on her short, brown fur, which the captain caresses delicately but with glee, going all the way up to the tip and then down to the base, rubbing and scratching a bit right behind them, making Bryld squirm a bit as a shiver runs all the way down her spine. As you had the chance to prove yourself before, she quite likes being rubbed behind the ears.

"Eeeh, this feels so good!", Agnes smiles, "Way better than your horns, Astreya".

The wizard smiles, "My horns aren't very sensitive, I'm afraid".

Well, she chose to let Agnes pet her ears, so she's fine. If she starts getting uncomfortable or Agnes starts getting fresh with her then we'll put a stop to it.
>>
You watch the scene unfold in front of your eyes. You have to admit it's a little fun watching Bryld squirm around, and since you've been assured Agnes is a gentlewoman you think your cartographer will be safe from anything bad. You could intervene and ask the captain to stop if you see her get really uncomfortable, but then again you remember she's made a point more than once about trying to stop being cowardly, so you're not sure you'd be doing her a favour if you spoke on her behalf.

"By the way, how did you get those horns?", you ask Astreya, since the topic has been brought up, "You weren't born with them, or were you?".

"I wasn't", she confirms, "It's a little difficult to explain, you know of Ether mutations? Using magic makes you a lot more prone to developing them. I don't think there's a logic behind them, I've heard of the issue being studied and discusses and I read a paper about them once, but in the end I think it's just like magic: all random, no sense of right and wrong, no predictability".

"So what, did they just... Grow? Did you wake up with horns, one day?", you wonder how it was. You were born with tiny bumps and grew them well over the years to have the nice horns you're proud of today, but hers seems to be a different story.

"No, not like this", she chuckles, "But I did wake up one day with an odd feeling in my forehead and when I picked up a mirror I had a small pair of horns popping out of my forehead. And I told myself "Oh dear here we go I'm turning into a monster already" and started to worry", she chuckles again, amused at her own memories, "Then Yomi started to call me disgusting and that made me feel okay all of a sudden. They kept growing, a lot, but they've been stable for a long while now, I don't think they'll grow again".

And you got Agnes' attention too, who is looking between your horns and Astreya's. "Can I touch your horns, too?", she asks.

You were warned that Agnes was a bit grabby, but she actually does look well-behaved, asking for permission before getting her girly fingers on other girls, and at least not touching anywhere inappropriate. "Sure, go ahead", you tell her, "While we're at it, can I touch your twintails too?".

"Oh, feel free", and she gets up on her knees so she can touch your horns. You feel her slender but firm fingers gently grasping your horns; touching, prodding, going from tip to base and experimenting both the feel and your reaction; you feel the rough brushing as they caress over the tough, bony surface. Its irregularities and the vibration that transmits to your head also makes you feel that she has several calluses on her hands, which she probably got from handling weapons day in and day out, that you didn't quite see with your naked eye. You feel a little bit of tension as her fingers explore the base of you horns, brushing and prodding the parts where the skin gives way to the extruding bone, her fingertips prodding and savouring every part with the touch of someone who has expertise feeling with through that sense.

You keep yourself busy with her hair to avoid squirming like a certain bunny; it's not as silky as Astreya's nor as smooth as Bryld's, it's a bit thicker and not completely smooth, tending to curl and wave a little and only held relatively straight by its weight, seeing how it's practically waist-length. It still feels good and relatively soft, though you guess that given how often she exercises and travels in rough conditions it's already surprising she can keep it this well-cared.

"I'm sorry Astreya", Agnes says with a sigh, "Her horns feel way better than yours".

"My, I feel defeated as a woman", she answers with a chuckle, looking at the scene.

"You have nice hair too", you compliment Agnes, "How do you keep it that way with all the stress you put it through?".

"I know, it's not easy", she sighs, still rubbing your horns and caressing their base, probably just to see your reaction, "I have to take care of it every morning and brush it every night before going to bed. I also try to wash it every day if I can, that helps a lot, but it's still not enough, at least I don't really feel it is".

You wonder how much of this you can apply to Tahenohan's hair, you still can't believe it tangles and gets messy so easily, it's almost unnatural. But most of all, you find yourself staring at Astreya's large, even kind of impressive horns. They're much thicker than yours, not just longer, and she said they aren't as sensitive, which only helps make you curious.

"Sorry", and you let go of Agnes' twintails, "Astreya, can I touch your horns? I never touched someone else's".

She chuckles, "Go ahead, but I'm afraid they're not that good to pet".

You try, and you have to admit she has a point. They feel very thick, very heavy and very powerful, but not as good; they're relatively smooth so it's not like they feel bad, but judging from her complete lack of reaction, both at the tip and at the base, you conclude that hers really aren't as sensitive as yours. She probably just idly registers your touch, feeling none of the electric tension when a practised finger gently teases your base, or caresses down to the tip, nor the feeling of dull warmth when they are idly prodded or playfully pulled.

It's a little sad, in fact, but you try to control your expression as not to make her feel like you're pitying her.

Finding yourself amongst all of this girl power, you decide to try and make good use of it. Letting go of Astreya's horns, you point at Tahenohan, getting Agnes' attention and making her stop fondling your horns for a moment, "While we're here, can you help me with her hair a little?".

"Eh?", Tahenohan looks around, her manic smile still on but a little confused as if she was lost in thought as she watched all of the horn fondling going on. As soon as you point it out everyone else begins to stare at the half-elf and admit that, yes, her hair is a mess.

"Uh... That might require some dedication", Agnes looks concerned, "And I thought my hair was difficult. Let me get my brush".

"I'll help too", Bryld offers, moving closer to Tahenohan.

Agnes brings two wooden brushes over, one large and one small, and hands you the small one, "I'll deal with the safer parts, I'm afraid of pulling her hair, you do the more delicate parts since you know her better".

You grab the brush and begin to get to work, with Bryld helping by taking off all the skull hairpins she has on. Tahenohan giggles and squirms a little, but nothing she doesn't already do every time you try to get her hair in order. Sometimes, you almost get the feeling you're going to get tangled into her hair instead, as if you're actually fighting it.

It takes time, effort and dedication, which still passes amiably thanks to the tea, the cocoa biscuits and Astreya recounting an anecdote about that one time a minotaur proposed to her because of her horns. Between Agnes' brush, your brush, and Bryld's hands, you slowly start to turn Tahenohan's hair into something presentable.

Almost being the keyword, but you can't fix all the problems in one day.

It's still very wavy, but at least it doesn't look like it's trying to strangle itself.

You're happy enough with the result, and you conclude that Tahenohan's hair cannot get any better without some extensive, long-term care. Thinking about it, she's been mistreating it for over forty years while living in a desert; all of the constant arid winds and sand must have done disasters to her poor hair, it's no surprise it's in this shape.

Still, you don't want to make your cartographer feel lonely, so you touch her shoulder and gently move her to offer your back, "Hold still, let me brush your hair too".

"Okay", she agrees without protest.

After tangling with the half-elf's hair, Bryld's is a walk in the park. For one thing because hers is naturally smooth, for another because she already takes care of it on her own, therefore you're only really just using the brushing as an excuse to pet it. Not that there's anything bad about it.

However, you spy with your little eye that while Tahenohan pours herself the last of the tea, a few drops, nothing much, her hair is already starting to curl up. Visibly so. You see a strand or two at a time curving and curling, very slowly, not unlike a carnivorous plant relaxing after having eaten a bug, except the other way around.

It's difficult to describe but it's amazing and creepy at the same time.

"Well I could see her hair was in bad shape", is Agnes' wide-eyed comment, "But... This is an entirely new level".

You have to agree with her, it's so bad it made you stop brushing Bryld's hair out of shock too. Not that she can notice because you are all busy staring at her hair as she finishes off the tea and lets out a satisfied sigh.

All that work for nothing. You start to wonder if you're against impossible odds, but you decide you've had enough with this stuff for one day. That and Agnes and the others have been yawning for a while, it's time to hit the sack for all of you.

That was fast.

Also, time to pick your sleeping partner. I want to choose Astreya, for suspicion of a mysterious staff she supposedly owns.

Asteya, Bryld AND Tahenohan.

Asteya from behind, Bryld in front, Tahenohan on all of us.

She'd have to ask.

Thinking about going to sleep makes you step upon an interesting topic that you didn't consider: "So are we going back to the temporary shack?", you wonder. It was supposed to be a one day deal, and Luna already has a new allocation, but nobody told you anything.

"Ah, no no", Agnes shakes her head and stands up, facing the window to point outwards, "See that house in front of mine? You're going there. I'm sorry I didn't tell you earlier but since you're a little particular in the kind of work you do it's a bit harder to get you organized".

In fact, you're the only ones that don't do either manual work or field work, which puts you into the "particular" category. You can't disagree: an exploring censor is a little unique, especially when her followers are a half-elf necromancer and a bunny cartographer.

"There's no furniture, I'm afraid not even a bed, sorry. They brought one for me but I don't really need it, you can carry it over to your house if you want", she offers, "Furniture is still luxury around these parts, except for those that brought it with them".

"It's okay, we'll manage", you offer. After all, you've slept in worse conditions, and you are equipped with bedrolls in any case. You won't need the tent, at least.

"It's been a wonderful party, thank you Agnes", Bryld thanks the captain, that chuckles, patting her head.

"Thanks for the tea!", Tahenohan goes, an Agnes pats her head too, although a bit more carefully, as if afraid her fingers could get trapped and never be returned.

"Thank you for hosting us", Astreya goes too. "Thank you for showing up", Agnes answers.

"Thank you for everything", you then tell her, "It was a really nice evening".

With all the thank you and goodbyes accounted for, all that is left to do is go to your new home and rest.

Just as a clarification.

I'm tired and it's late so my writing is getting worse, but the option

>Escort Astreya back home with everyone before going to bed

Means "Escort Astreya back to her home, bring everyone with you, then go back to YOUR home and sleep".

Unless you want to turn it into a big sleepover at her place. That's fine too, I just wanted to make sure we're on the same line.

Once outside, you turn to Astreya and look at your other friends. As you are about to bid goodnight to each other, you ask the wizard: "Would you be okay if we came to sleep over at your place for tonight?".

She blinks, as if surprised. It's dark outside, and you can't see anything past the faint, eerie, wisp-like lights that flutter idly, slowly orbiting around her. They're very convenient and not that creepy once you get used to them, and most importantly they let you appreciate her expression, whose details you would miss if you were in just lantern light.

"I'm not against it", she claims, "But I don't really have much space. I only have my own bed, and two sofas. The attic is... Not very comfortable. Plus, Yomi is there, and he doesn't even really need to sleep. Not that he'll assault you or anything", she quickly assures, "But he... Might be annoying if you're not used to him".

Bryld takes a step back, "I... I'd rather pass, Lillith. I don't really feel comfortable around him".

She has a point, there's that foul-mouthed demon about, and Bryld doesn't feel like dealing with him again. You can't really blame her, you can hardly imagine how fun it would be to sleep under the same room of a sadistic demon that doesn't even need to sleep.

Tahenohan would likely not complain, but then again what are you going to do, leave Bryld alone?

>Leave Bryld and Tahenohan at home, escort Astreya to her place and then come back.
>Escort Astreya to her place all together, then come back to your own house.
>Proceed with the sleepover, even if it means leaving Bryld alone.

"I'm sorry, I didn't consider that", you pat Bryld's shoulder, you don't want to make your friend uncomfortable, not after being complimented for how caring you are in the morning, "Nevermind then. Astreya, let us at least escort you home".

But the wizard shakes her head with a smile, "Lantern oil is precious, you shouldn't waste it for something as pointless as this. I am in no danger", she then points to her own lights, "You won't have those on your way back, you know?".

Again, she has a point. You weren't planning on relying much on your lantern in the first place, and avoid travelling during night time altogether, but you guess you'd rather be prepared for emergencies rather than waste your resources for something kind but ultimately pointless and then regret it when you're in actual danger.

"Are you sure?", you ask her, but she nods firmly.

"I appreciate your kindness, I really do", she says as she caresses your cheek with a smile, "You really are a caring leader, but don't push yourself, and don't think of everyone as needing help or support. You have to give room for everyone to spread their wings and fly, there will come times when you won't be able to protect anyone and you will have to rely on the help of others. When that time will come", and she gently pokes the tip of your nose, "You will understand the real value of friendship".

You feel like she just said something that stems from the experience only life can give, and give up on any protest whatsoever. Besides, she's right: even if she was in danger, she could take care of herself much better than any form of protection you could even think of offering.

She waves you goodbye and you all return the gesture, heading into your new home. As expected, it's like Agnes' house, just without the bed and the cushions. Bare, with no food supplies either.

Not that you need them right now. All you need is to spread your bedrolls and get a good night's sleep, for tomorrow adventure awaits.
