LAST TIME, ON P:SS QUEST....

Grey and Dani finished their Initial Trainer Evaluation and Ranking Exams. Grey placed sixth in the Region overall, and first in his color! Dani slapped some sense into a wild Clefairy and proved that she a survivor on par with Ursaring Grylls! Later, Grey helped Professor Pine with his research and learned of a Dangerous Truth. Now, Grey and Dani are helping Erwin in return for a favor!

Shouting at the crowds, waving a sign is only going to do you so much good. If you want to help Erwin and meet that 10-sales bonus you’re gonna have to do this the old fashioned way. “Hey, you!”

A guy looking over one of the station’s area maps looks up at you, then looks around a bit before pointing to himself. “…Me?”

You approach him, confidence in your step and goal in your mind. “Yes, you! You were just sorted too, right?”

“Y-yeah. How could you tell? It’s because I look so lost, right? Yeah… I… I’m just not sure what to do first, ya know? So much, so much…. It’s like my mom said, I’m just going to be overwhelmed and-“

You try to cut in, to get a word in edgewise but you can’t. He actually turns away from you, still rambling and working himself into a nice little storm of anxiety….

>10 minutes later…

You couldn’t take it anymore. You knew this guy’s whole life story, and all you wanted was for him to buy a book! “Kenneth…. KENNETH!” Yeah, he had referred to himself in the third person so…. You knew his name. “Listen, Kenneth – I understand you’re afraid, and you’re worried. But that’s part of the journey. It wouldn’t be a test of our characters if it wasn’t hard. You just have to believe in yourself, and know that bravery is you overcoming fear. Also, you can go over there and buy a book from Erwin. They’re cheap, and it’ll give you a lot of good advice.”

“Really?! Thanks! Man… I feel like we’re so close now, and I just met you. I haven’t been this close with somebody since myriendAnthonybuthemovedaway-“

He’s still talking, even as he walks towards the stand. Oh well. At least he’ll probably buy a book. Now just…. Nine more to go.

You take a long sigh and silently scream into your hands when a light touch on your shoulder brings your gaze up and around. “Dani?”

“Hey! You okay?” You nod. “Great! Well, I’ve only gotten about 4 sales in. How are you doing?”

F-four s-sales in….?! “Holy crap Dani, you rock!” You take her hands and start jumping a little in place. Dani just smiles and reddens. “We’ll be done in no time! No thanks to me, though! I’ve only sold one!” She starts laughing with you, her usual smile back on her face. “I promise I will make it up to you, though! We’ll catch you the best starter ever!”

>>>>

You are Dani 2795, master saleswoman. While Grey may be good at… other things, it seems that he hasn’t had much luck selling books thus far. Thankfully, he has you here to help him! You only need about 5 more book sales to really complete this “Trainer Task.” That reminds you… you and Grey will have to log this Task into your Pokedexes and get Erwin to sign off. Anyways, time to get back to business!

I have to make my way past various people crowding his stand now, but thankfully I’m able to get another copy of Erwin’s book. Let’s see…. There is a pretty wide demographic of people in the area. We have already sold to a bunch of trainers. Let’s see if I can find someone else who will want to buy.

There! That man looks like he just got off of his job. Maybe he would like a book to read tonight! Excuse me!” I power-walk over to him, and he looks up as I call out to him. “Hi there, sir! How are you today?”

His eyes have a very weary look to them, and once he gets a good look I can see, well, it looks like nostalgia? “O-oh. Hello there, young lady. I’m doing alright. Is there something I can do to help you?”

I give him a big smile. Poor man looks so sad! “Well, I’m actually working on my first Task on my Trainer Tour! I just registered today, and I’m trying to sell some books for my new friend over there.“ I give a point and a wave to Erwin’s stand, “I was wondering if you would like to buy a book!”

His expression just darkens as I talk, and I wonder if I said something wrong when he starts crying! “Y-You just started your tour?!” He sobs into one of his arms. “My daughter just passed away….! S-She was… she was attacked b-by an ursaring while on her TOUR!” He takes on to full on wailing, and I feel so bad I can’t help but grab one of his arms and pat him on the back as he eases onto the street.

Some people start staring, but I glare at them until they go away.

“I-it’s okay…. Why, well, why don’t you tell me some happy things about her? What was her name?”

“Jessica… Her name was Jessica, and she looked…. Like… YOU!” He goes back to wailing again. I, well, I can’t just leave him….

Looks like book sales will have to wait.

You are Grey, aspiring trainer, and poor bookseller. You first Trainer Task is… off to a rough start. Dani’s definitely pulling her wait, yeah, but there must be something you can do!
You take to your usual habit of contemplating things aloud. “Think. Think, Grey…. What are your strengths that you can play to…?” You think of times where you have heard about things to buy and books to read. Some word of mouth, yeah, but mostly…

>100

“The internet! Why didn’t I think of that before?!”

>>>>

It hardly takes 10 minutes after posting a thread on the Sortie section of your favorite Trainer Image Boards that there’s a veritable flock of young trainers swamping Erwin’s stand. All you had to do was upload some pictures of the maps, insult everyone’s favorite league champion, samefag a bit… It was too easy, really.

>>>>

After the initial crowd has died down a bit – mostly from Erwin selling out of most of his stock! – you and Dani are both helping him tidy up for the day. You noticed that Dani has makeup smudges and what look to be tear stains on her shirt. You’ll have to ask about that later. For now, all that matters is – you have your first Pokémon and free stuff!

>Espurr reacquired and registered to your Trainer ID!
>Erwin’s Autobiography acquired! Special locations and points of interest will be added to your map!

On his part, Erwin seems very happy. Extremely happy – and he surprised you by getting the Espurr’s pokeball custom painted while you were going through the Sort! He really deserved your help and all the sales. You’re proud to have his autobiography as a signed copy, and Dani said that she will always cherish the maps he gave her.

Question: Would you like a sub-quest before or after a huge, warm serving of PLOT?
>>
>>36164102
I'll probably have fun either way.

And part of the fun would probably be figuring out what the plot is. So I'd say pick one, and keep it vague which it is. The more you hide the rails, the happier I'll be. PLOT is generally meant to be lewd.
>>
>>36164102
Mix it us and don't tell us.

>>36164168

A respectable opinion. Thank you, Anon.

I will not be writing any lewd plot except in a paste-bin (maybe). Otherwise it is fade-to-black. for now. For my sake, please keep any lewd-ness relatively mature. Thanks, guys!

You say your goodbyes to Erwin, promising to keep in touch and to call if you ever need advice or help. You and Dani both hoist your standard-issue backpacks. They’re light, but that’s hopefully about to change very soon. Because now ‘tis time… for shopping!

After all, you only have a couple hours of light left, but the night is still young!

“Alright, Dani. I’d say that we should grab what supplies we can in the area, maybe do some sightseeing, and then turn in at the Trainer House for the night. What do you think? Anything you want to do? Ooh, also… are you hungry?” At the thought your stomach offers a weak grumble, and you realize you haven’t eaten in several hours. “I’m not sure if they offer dinner at the House we saw on the map… Or if it’s free, besides.”

Dani contemplates that for a moment herself. “Yeah, we’ll have to grab dinner soon. I say that, before any of that – why don’t we meet your Espurr?”

Putting more practical matters aside for the moment – that’s actually a really good idea! Your first Pokémon! “You’re right, Dani. We need to get to know each other… I need to get to know my partner.” You look wistfully at the ball for a moment, storing this scene in your head for years to come. “Come on out!”

There’s a flash of light, and then purple fur. Your bipedal friend is currently hunched over on all fours; but, after peeking around for a bit, she rises to meet you, left paw rubbing at her ears.

She mewls a little, but is otherwise quiet.

Even you are kneeling, the Espurr only comes to about the height of your chest. She’s a cute little thing, but you swear you’ll forge a dangerous partnership yet!

“Espurr, I am Grey. Grey.” You motion to your chest, keeping a soft smile on your face and solid eye contact.

A tiny, serene voice doesn’t fill your ears, but… your mind. “Grey. GREY. GreygreyGreyGREYGREYgrey.” Hundreds of little echoes of the Espurr’s voice, ringing through your head. It startles you, and the haunting ringing drowns out all other thoughts. You grip your head with your left hand as you motion to the Espurr with you right.

“Shh! Wait, shhh. Slowly. Slowly, Espurr!” The Espurr droops down a little, and its psychic projections calm down as well.

“Grey. Hello. Grey. Trainer. Grey.” Well, it knows your name very well. The automatic training algorithm in the pokeball would have made sure of that, yeah, but… Does it really need to repeat your name so much? You find it getting easier, but your Espurr’s voice is a loud humming, sometimes a booming, in your head. It will take getting used to.

“That’s right, Espurr. I am Grey, and I will take care of you. This, I promise. I am your trainer. And this,” you motion to Dani, who kneels down and gives a little wave. “… is Dani. She is a friend. And between the three of us - nothing will stand in our way!”

Now it’s Dani’s turn to be bombarded.

Thankfully, she weathers it better. You ask how. “There were some psychics in my StanFaH. You get used to it.”

>>>>

A few minutes later you are walking down Main Street, one of the Espurr’s little paws wrapped up in your hand. It looks up to you every few moments, muttering “Grey,” or “Trainer,” in your head. You… actually pick up some fear through what tiny mental link you have with her.

You can’t ignore the insecurity and concern that’s coming from your little feline friend. You ask Dani to “Hold on,” and, kneeling down again, you try to mentally communicate with the Espurr.

“What…. Is…. Wrong? You… afraid…. Of… Grey?”

The little fuzzball blinks its large eyes a few times, then takes its paws and places them on your forehead. Your mental link instantly clears, and her voice once again fills your head as you close your eyes. “Trainer leave me before. Lonely. Sad. Bad. Bad things. Erica find me. Erica friend. Erica need my help. Concern about Erica. Please help her. Please let me say goodbye.” Her final word resounds in your head, rippling across your consciousness before the mental link drifts away. You open your eyes.

Dani gives you a look of concern as you rise, your hand to your head. “Is something wrong, Grey? With… her?”

“Yeah, she…” You don’t like just calling her by pronouns or “Espurr,” so you talk to her once more, this time aloud: “Espurr, do you have a name?” She reaches out to you mentally, telling you that Erica gave her a name but that you may "change it if want." You think it suits her well enough.

You tell Dani aloud that her name is “Mittens,” and that she has a friend who may need help. At the least, Mittens wants to say goodbye.

>”I promise you will get to say goodbye, and we will try to help Erica, soon. I need to do some things, first.”
>”We have to do other things, Mittens. I have the Tour to worry about.”

You ask Mittens if Erica is nearby. She says that yes, she is, and that she can lead you to her. “Dani, is it okay if we find this ‘Erica’ and give her some help? I think it would really help Mittens be more comfortable. If you want, I can go on by myself.”

Nah just smiles, shaking her head. “Nah – we’re in this together, remember? I’ll just add this onto the ‘You Owe Me’ chart!”

>>>>

Mittens leads the two of you towards the Western edge of the city, and the bustling of crowds and shops has been replaced by quiet streets and simple homes dotting a landscape of older abandoned buildings. It is one such “abandoned” building that Mittens leads to you. She shows you a small hole in one of the walls, telling you that is how she usually gets in. She doesn’t know how Erica enters and leaves.

You manage to find a large vent with a variety of boxes and an AC unit underneath. You notice that the screws look to be missing except for one. It probably swings away, and is looks large enough to crawl into. This must be how Erica gets in and out. You clamber onto the AC unit, being careful to distribute your weight, and – sure enough – the vent cover swings away and you are able to get inside.

There is a large hole punched out of the duct system. You lower yourself down and land onto a cold concrete floor. There’s no furniture, and the only light is coming from the vent – and from a room ahead of you. Checking around you see some dishes in a sink, so Erica has definitely been living here… but why? You work the locks and bolts on the main door, and the electricity thankfully works – so the electric bolt slides open as well.

Dani and Mittens both look relieved when you open the door. You tell Mittens to lead the way, and she does. Her soft feet pad across the floor, and she heads towards the lit-up room. You watch as she disappears behind the doorway, and then a weak voice can be heard talking to her. You and Dani look at each other, concerned, and then you follow.

Mittens stands next to a still form, swaddled in blankets and…. Radiating darkness?

>89

You toss a protective arm in front of Dani, and reach out to your Espurr. “Mittens, get away from that!”

That’s when the darkness hits you.

A purple… “haze,” emanates from the still, blanketed form, and it seems to suck the light out of the very air. It washes over you – ethereal, yet it feels like you are being crushed by waves of dark water. A heavy despair washes over you.

You’ve felt this before. You had seen a match with a particularly strong ghost trainer. Reminded you of Silent Edgar, the Ghost Lord. Anyways, the trainer brought out a Gengar, and when it unleashed that first Night Shade… several people fainted.

You bring up the happiest thoughts you can think of, swimming out of the sea of despair. Thankfully, it must have missed Dani – because you are able to focus on a reassuring hand she has gripped onto your shoulder.

“…Grey!” You focus on her voice, like a float in a stormy sea. “….GREY!”

You snap out of it, the weight leaving you finally. You spy it in a corner – a small, purple shape, with large black eyes. A Gastly.

My friend, Grey, has just been hit by another – I think it was a Night Shade? – and he’s on his hands and knees, gasping for air. I don’t have a pokemon, but I have to get this take care of this thing. I have to do what I can.

I rummage through my bag and pull out one of the standard issue container-balls. I’m pretty sure this one contains a pokeball…. There’s more hissing, and then a feline growl. I look up, and Mittens has batted the Gastly to the ground, but is having trouble getting any sort of solid hit on it. I cycle through the container’s contents on the pop-up display as quickly as possible. Tent…. R-Bars…. Clothes…. There! Pokeball!

I release the selected contents, and with a bright flash it appears. Bending down, I snatch up the pokeball from the floor.

>>>>

You are Grey, and you feel very, very ill.

But there’s no time to be weak.

“Mittens…. Mittens….! Use CONFUSION! Hitting it won’t work!”

“TrainerGrey, Mittens BUSY!” More growls and hisses as the gastly and the Espurr circle each other, diving in and out. Unfortunately, Mittens seems to be coming out the worse of the two. Long scratches and tiny bitemarks mar her fur.

“I know, but scratches NO WORK! You have to hit it with your MIND! Use your MIND, Mittens! Attack the bad pokemon’s MIND!”

You hope she can understand that….

>>>>

I aim the reticle at the Gastly, but I can’t get a clear shot. Mittens is keeping it moving around where it can’t get a nightshade off, but it’s moving around too much for me to get a pokeball off! Damnit…

Then the gastly goes still. A moment it was rising in the air, and then it wobbles – once, twice – and then it falls. Mittens pounces on it, but I am able to get the reticle on its outstretched wing.

Come on, come on…..!

Lock!

“Mittens, move!” And she does. After that I reel back, and throw.

I must have drawn the attention of the little shit with my shouting. I really wish I hadn’t done that.

A wave hits me, starting in the back of my head and moving downwards – a seizing feeling, and the pokeball hits the ground as I lose my grip on it. The sound, and the sensation of letting it go, only vaguely registers in my mind, however. Everything seems dampened, and then…. Sadness. Lonliness. Despair. Everything is dark. Dark…. Dark….

I lose consciousness.

>>>>

You shakily reach for the pokeball while keeping the darkness at the edge of your mind. You watch as Dani falls to the floor, and you look over – Mittens doesn’t look much better. The Gastly is moving towards her still, purple form. My fingers scratch the ball. Closer… closer….

Got it.

I lift my arm shakily, and then throw. It sails, floats in the air… My head slumps back, and I stare at the ceiling.

There is a flash of light.

“Got you, you son of a bitch.”

I am Dani 2795 and I… ughhhh…. My head hurts like a bitch.

I roll over from my stomach, sitting up slowly… very slowly. Grey is next to me, his eyes narrowed and breaths shallow, but steady. “….Grey? Are you okay?”

He looks up at me, trying to force a bit of a smile. “Yeah… yeah. Good job catching it, Dani.” I try to smile back at that, but it’s hard. I feel so empty. So cold. “You… well, I guess you got your first starter now….”

We both chuckle a little at that.

“Grey. Grey, we need to check on Mittens and Erica.” I get up onto my legs, my head spinning. “I’ll check on them – you call the police or something. I think Erica needs help.”

I walk over to the still form, and pull back the blankets. There she sits, looking about my age – but very, very sick. The Gastly must have been doing something to her. Do…. Do Gastly suck blood? I don’t want to find out….

Mittens is okay. I check on her pulse and she’s alive and breathing – but she had a very rough fight. I dig out a potion, cradling her little head. She speaks to me as I spray antiseptic foam that covers and speeds the healing of her wounds. “G-Grey…. Okay? M-Mittens…. G-Good…. Pokemon? Erica…. Erica safe…?”

>Response?

I run my hand over Mittens forehead, and she closes her eyes, her breathing slowing as the medicine takes effect. “You are more than a ‘good’ pokemon, Mittens. You are the best. I will make sure Grey and Erica will be okay. You just rest. You did your part.”

A little feeling of gratitude works its way through my mind. I pick Mittens up and lay her down on a pile of blankets and cushions as I turn my attentions back to Erica.

>>>>

You are Grey and…. This is what a hangover must feel like.

Your fingers were shaky, but you dial the police and tell them your approximate location. The operator on the other end of the line stated that their GPS location systems would do the rest. You explained that you had found a young girl, Erica, and she seemed to have suffered from a gastly attack. The monster had been neutralized, but she needed medical attention. The operator asked if she was bleeding, mumbling, breathing… You directed these questions to Dani who had just finished applying a potion to various bruises on Erica’s body to at least numb the pain. She said there was no current heavy bleeding, and Erica was breathing. No mumbling.

The emergency personnel would have to do the rest. You stand up, take a few breaths, and look around. Mittens had been taken care of – thanks to Dani. There weren’t any immediate personal possessions around other than some clothes and empty food boxes scattered around. You return Mittens to her ball and go to open the front door.

>>>>

The authorities load Erica into an ambulance. An officer asks you some basic questions and commends you. She even signs off for a level B Trainer Task, earning both you and Dani points for your trouble. You idly notice that Dani is now eleventh in her color. You are fifth in yours.

You spend a couple more minutes talking to the officer – asking how common this sort of attack is, particularly for a Gastly. What the odds of recovery are. “She should be able to make a full recovery, right?”

The officer is a younger woman, with blue streaks in her hair. “Yes, I expect that she will recover completely. The blood loss didn’t seem too extreme, and her mental stats were solid enough. I gather that her dreams hadn’t been fed on for too long… nor her blood. Maybe a night or two. If it had gone on much longer she wouldn’t be so lucky… Thankfully, you found her. “

You and Dani share a look, and her nod communicates all you need to know. “Officer, if I may… Would you mind taking us to the center she was taken to? So we can see how she does? We would really appreciate it.”

>>>

Minutes in the back of a police cruiser and you’re at the Medical Center and Trainer House. The officer leaves with a salute, but not before telling you that she doesn’t imagine that you will immediately be able to see Erica. Tomorrow morning will probably be different, however.

Dani stretches before looking at her watch. “Well… I’m a little hungry, and I’m VERY tired… Jeez, we’ve done a lot today, huh?” You both give tired laughs at that. “What do you want to do now, Grey?”

>Open choices for you guys

You let out a long yawn while stretching. “Let’s see if we can get checked out real quick by a nurse, then get something to eat while your gastly and Mittens get healed?”

Dani nods at that, letting out a yawn herself. “Sounds good… maybe get our clothes washed or something. Dunno how that works here, but…. Yeah. So tired…”

You nod heavily while walking to the nurse’s station. “You and me both, Dani.”

>>>>

The nurse on duty gave both of you a quick check-up, offering some medicine to help with your sleep incase you have any nightmares – the only short term side effect of the attack. After that you got some laundry tickets, dropping off your dirty clothes from the Sort, and grabbed some cheap grub from the café. Meat and veggie wraps for both of you, with some peanut butter cookies for dessert.

You speak up over a mouth full of spinach. “So are you going to name him?” Dani looks up at you, her head partially slumped over on her hand.

“Hm?” She has a bit of greens sticking out of her mouth. It’s cute.

“Your gastly. Are you going to name it?”

“I was thinking Vlad.” You laugh at that. “Good name for a scary little guy like him, huh? Vlad the Purple Impaler?” You both laugh. A nice end to the day.

>>>>

Both pokemon come back in tip-top shape, and you say good-bye to Dani and Vlad as you and Mittens head to the boys’ dorm D. You get ready for bed, throwing on something comfortable, brushing your teeth, reading up on some internet news… Finally, you slide into sheets with a long sigh. Mittens curls up into the pit of your arm, eyes drooping. A soft mental “purr” flows into your mind.

You shoot out a text to the professor, asking him about domestic attacks rates around the city and explaining the evening’s events.

>cont.
>>
>>36173754

He doesn’t immediately respond, so you throw on some earbuds and watch a video recapping the Sorting End Ceremony. Dragonites… they had some juvenile dragonites doing fly-bys. Nice. A charizard… Rapidash parade across the stadium field…. A Golem tower! Awesome! And there was an interesting speaker in attendance. Russian name, you dare not try to pronounce it. Scientist, apparently. Gave a nice commencement speech.

You flick off the screen of your Silphone and slip into the darkness. The sounds of sheets and snoring surround you, with a soft purring coming from Mittens. You wrap her closer with your arms, pulling her against you. You scratch her behind the ears, thinking of how lucky you have been today, despite its many difficulties. The tiny purple form of your Espurr fills you with hope, and wards off any ill-feelings that threaten to spoil your good mood.

You drift to sleep.

>>>>

Your dreams are not uncomfortable, dark, or frightening. Instead, they are clear. Poignant. And… you can’t help but shake the feeling that they are important.

Your conversation with Professor Pine in his lab is presented before you. You ask him about the dangers of pokemon, of his discovery. You warn him that evil men could do evil things with such knowledge.

He acknowledges this. He says that he remembers a time when pokemon were still feared, as weapons of mass destruction. That the times of warfare and rampaging monsters still haunted many people. He says that he would never want those times to return.

You ask about Maximus – why wasn’t he affected? The professor goes quiet. He says he doesn’t know for sure, but…. He thinks it’s because Maximus cares about him. His hypothesis is that the signal doesn’t make pokemon evil, or dangerous. It simply allows them to be so.

You claim that this must be the case. Pokemon and humans can live together.

A loud voice calls out to you: “Do not lose yourself, Grey. Do not lose your hope.”

You awaken to a light, wet… rough? Feeling on your cheek. You mumble, lifting your hand up to feel… fur.

“TrainerGrey. TrainerGrey up now. Morningtime.”

“Good morning to you too, Mittens.” You stretch, rubbing the sleep out of your eyes and swinging your legs off the bed. The floor is cold, and the morning sun is just beginning to peek into your room.

>>>>

About a half hour later and you are sitting in the dining hall once more, chewing on some toast while feeding Mittens some steak. She was very much enjoying chewing on the little pieces you would toss her, and you had made a game of trying to get her to guess where you were going to toss it to next. She was doing very well (psychic powers are cheating, though…!)

You dial up your home number on your silphone, and a moment later your mother is staring at you through virtual space, a soft smile on her face. She’s… already at work. Typical.

“Grey.”

“Mother.” You give her a small nod, and try to get a big smile to your face.

“So how was your first day?”

Your mother raises an eyebrow at this, shifting in her seat so that she can lean into the camera more. “Ah. A friend…? I see… Tell me more about her.”

“Ah, well, she’s nice. Very nice. And she can cook! The main thing was that we both did well in the Sorting results and already completed two Trainer Tasks!”

Your mother gives a curt nod. “Very good. But is she cute?”

You put a hand to your face. Why does she always have to focus on the stupid shit…? “So, yeah. I placed 5th in the sort overall… 1st in my color. Saved someone…. You know. From a gastly.”

“Are you avoiding the question, Grey?”

“Come on, Mom! Yes, she’s very cute. No, we haven’t done anything!” You throw your hands up, sighing once more. “Also, my first pokemon is an Espurr.” You hold up Mittens. “This is Mittens. She’s great so far. Tell the old man I said hello.”

“I will.” Your mother blows you a kiss, then waves goodbye. “Make sure I don’t get any grandkids until you’re done with the tour!” You hang up, put Mittens down, then stand up yourself.

“That Grey’s mom?” Mittens looks up at you, curiously.

You speak aloud to the little cat as you gather up your dishes. “Yes. That’s my mom…” Then you turn around. “Oh.”

“Hi Dani.” She’s beet red again, and twisting one end of her hair into knots while laughing nervously. “H-How…. Much did you hear?”

She just laughs nervously.

After gathering up your laundry and checking out your beds, you and Dani see to visiting Erica. Thankfully, the nurse gives the go-ahead; seems Erica’s condition has been stable since earlier this morning and with treatment she has rapidly improved. Another attending nurse walks you up to the correct floor and room, knocking on the door until a soft “Come in!” can be heard on the other side.

The door opens and Mittens bounds inside. You and Dani follow, walking into a small white room with a tiny bed occupied by Erica – who is awake and looking much better.

The nurse checks over her vitals and the IVs hooked up to her while making introductions. “Hi, sunshine! Hope you’re doing well! Let’s see… your numbers are looking great. These fine young folks are the two that rescued you!” Erica gives a weak smile inbetween giving cuddles to Mittens. “They thought it would be good to check on you, and apparently they brought you a friend!”

“Yes. They did. Thank you, and thank you for bringing Mittens.” Mittens purrs happily. “A-Are…. Are one of you her trainer now?” You raise your hand. “Good. She deserves a good trainer…”

“Well she’s an amazing pokemon. She led us to you, actually. She was really worried.” Mittens gives a nod, and Erica just cuddles her harder. “Glad to see you are doing better, though. We found you just in time, I guess. Fate must have led us here, or at least Mittens to me – she tried to pick my pocket, so I captured her to keep her from getting away.” You give Mittens a smarmy grin. “Rotten little thing.” And she just sticks her tongue back out at you.

“Yeah…. That’s… That’s actually partly my fault.” You and Dani both give Erica confused looks at that. “Mittens was stealing to try and take care of me. I know it’s not an excuse, but I had been robbed on the road not too long ago. I’m a new trainer, and I didn’t know what to do. I got back to Jay City, but that Gastly must have done something to me. I started avoiding people, and I just wanted to curl up in that old house, and…. And….” She starts crying. Mittens mewls at her, putting her paws on Erica’s crossed arms.

You nod your head, mouth set in a grim line. “Yeah, Gastly can do that. Even just facing it for that brief period of time… I hear they can drive people to insanity, or at least deep depression. It’s a good thing Mittens found you and was taking care of you.”

Dani meets Erica at her side, rubbing her back while making soft coos and offering reassurances. “It’s not your fault, Erica. It’s okay…. It’s gone, and you’re alright. You can make a fresh start, or stay here and be safe. It’s not your fault…” Dani looks at you, mouthing “What should we do?”

>If you love someone, you gotta set em free. If Mittens prefers her to us, that's the way it should be, we're not a slave master.
I know, but muh Mittens...

You walk over to the little group huddled together on the hospital bed.

You mentally project to Mittens, or at least try to. “Mittens…? Do you want to stay with Erica? Do you want Erica to be your trainer?” Thankfully, she picks up on it, as her ears perk up and then she looks at you.

“Take care of Erica, yes. Erica trainer? No. Grey trainer.” You smile a bit at that and pet Mittens on the head.

You put a hand on Dani’s shoulder. She looks at you, questioning, and then stands when you motion for it. “Erica?” The robed girl looks up at you a bit, still crying into her arms. “Why don’t you travel with us? You can stay close to Mittens, we’ll all help each other… Do you have any pokemon?” Erica nods her head.

“Y-yeah. I have a Paras. I managed to catch him on my way back to Jay City.”

“Perfect. If you choose to, then, we can all travel together. I promise we won’t let anyone hurt you – and you can promise us the same thing. And if we see whomever stole from you I will personally kick their asses.”

She smiles a bit, and nods. “I…. I would really like that. Thank you. All of you.” You all smile at that, and the mood brightens considerably.

You spend some minutes getting to know Erica, but she needed rest so you part ways with shared numbers and promises to come back when she is discharged (should be soon enough). First things first, you need to go shopping – for three people now!
