RULES AND STATS: http://pastebin.com/bECzgrjY

You are KARLA WEISS, a Belkan fighter pilot looking to carve your own place in the skies!

Currently, you were in an extremely overcrowded and noisy bar. Just today, you were informed that Artemis had just fulfilled its contract obligations to Estovakia. With the rebels in the northern territories suppressed, their source of income cut, and their airbase destroyed, any organized resistance against the new government had essentially crumbled. At this point, all that remained was for Artemis to be paid and then pack up and leave.

It was the night before the pullout, and of course, it was the perfect time to party. You were sitting at the bar, warily eying all of the beers Lara kept chugging down, wondering if she had an upper limit for that sort of thing. Lilian and Amy were a bit more reserved, but you could tell they were in the festive mood and drinking more than they normally would, as well.

So far, you've refrained from drinking, mostly because you figure the group had to have at least one level headed member to keep the others from doing something stupid. Plus you never understood the whole "getting drunk till you literally pass out" culture too well.

"Hey, come on!" Lara laughs as she hooks an arm around you while holding a big pitcher of beer in the other. "Can't let the lady of the night sit in the corner being all grumpy!"

"What? What makes me so important?" You raise an eyebrow?"

"You don't know?" Lara gasps. "The intel guys interrogating the rebel prisoners leaked it out a little earlier. The Stovie rebels are calling you the White Wind!"

"Must be confusing me for someone else." You grunt. "Last I checked, my plane is blue."

"Well, technically, yes, but your wings are white due the feather pattern." Lilian points. "And generally, the wings of an aircraft are the most visible."

"Nah, she just doesn't know the Stovies' brand of naming conventions!" Lara laughs as she downs easily a quarter of her pitcher, spilling a bit of it on your jacket. Ew.

"So, then, what significance does the White Wind carry?" You ask. Considering Lara lived right across the border from Estovakia, she was the most knowledgeable of your group.

"Well, in the olden times, the Stovies didn't have neat things like gas heaters and modern insulation, and they live pretty far north, as you see, so every time winter came around, they'd hole up in their houses for a few months and pray that they wouldn't freeze to death in the meantime. Estovakian winters are always proceeded by huge wind storms from the north, so the Stovies saw the 'White Wind' as an ill omen, since whenever the wind came, winter came shortly after, and it always brought DEATH!"

"Are you sure that's real or are you just making it up?" You raise an eyebrow.

"I... uh... don't actually remember." Lara blinks, shrugs, and downs the rest of the pitcher. "But it still sounds cool, right?"

Ugh.

"I'm not really interested in such things." You grumble. You're just here to fly and get paid. Picking up notoriety like that just makes you a bigger target. Sure, pilots like the Demon Lord and Mobius One were living legends, but you're sure having enemy aces constantly going after you and your title would get EXTREMELY tiresome at some point.

"Hey, what's with that attitude?" Lara frowns. "You know a lot of pilots would give up their left arm to get some recognition from the enemy!"

"Meh. Karla just doesn't appreciate the finer things of being a pilot." Amy rolls her eyes.

You bite back the urge to snipe back at Amy. The girl was already well past buzzed judging from the way her face was colored and how she swayed to and fro in regular intervals. You'll chalk it up to the alcohol talking, so you opt to take the high road.

"Just go back to getting drunk, Amy." You sigh.

"H-hey. Maybe I WILL!" Amy retorts weakly as she finishes off her drink, with Lilian chuckling at her alcohol-induced childishness.

"Karlaaaaaaaaaaaa." Lara tightens her grip on you, pressing her her cheek against yours. Her cheek felt like a burning iron touching against yours, testament to the amount of alcohol running through her system. "C'mon! Just sitting not drinking anything is just pure party pooper behavior!"

"I'm not interested." You frown, trying to avert your eyes away from Lara.

"Come awwuuuuuuuuuuun. Just one!" Lara whines, holding a filled beer glass right in front of your face. "For your bestest wingmate?"

Quick question for you guys here:

I don't know what Ace Combat really is. But I followed GBFQ and enjoyed it despite only a cursory knowledge of Gundam and Gundam accessories. Will I miss a lot of the meat of this quest if I don't know much about Ace Combat setting/fighters, or can I pretty much dive in?

Dive in. Arcade style flight shooter. I know nothing of planes other than I'm an American so everything my nation has ever produced is fantastic.
>>
>>36174238
Tis better if you read up a bit. Strangereal backstories are very immersive, if you ask me.
>>
>>36174238
I'm sure you can join in fine, but you'll definitely get more enjoyment out of this if you play AC 4-5-0. Break out the ps2 or emulator.
>>
>>36174238
It's fine, you don't need in-depth knowledge of Strangereal, we'll get the info we need from plot dumps, and the planes will be explained by the sperglords and descriptions

Ace Combat is an extremely arcadey flight game. I'm linking a playthrough to you, this guy only uses the canon planes.

Things to know:
1. The setting is known as strangereal. All the planes that are developed in reality are developed by their sorta-counterparts in Strangereal. It's not straight 1:1.
2. The people in Strangereal fucking love their wars. They are short but there are A LOT of them.
3. Ace pilots in real life are amazing and usually amass hundreds of kills, when five is all you need for ace status. ACE pilots in Strangereal are even more absurdly good and a few have single handedly turned the tides of wars.
4. Belka a shit

And the next thing you know, you wake up in the cockpit of your Phantom with a splitting headache. You look around, wondering just how the hell you got in here. And finally, as your brain finally begins to wake up as well, you realize that you can't remember how the hell you got here.

And that's when the headache hits.

It obviously did not take an ace pilot to realize that you most likely got carried away with the drinking and went overboard. Goddamn, you figured you would've learned from last time, but apparently not. Wincing from the pain, you try to fight off the headache to clear your mind. You check your surroundings quickly. Of course, you were in your Phantom, meaning you were in your squadron's hangar rather than your barracks. You also just notice that there's a blanket drawn over you. Apparently, you either brought it with you or somebody placed it on you.

Summoning your strength, you crack open your cockpit canopy and look around. You can see Amy and Lilian also tucked away in their respective planes, similarly passed out. However, Lara's F-15 was empty. You look down and see her curled up at the foot of your Phantom's boarding ladder, fast asleep as well.

The hangar doors were closed, but judging from the windows, it was still dark out. Probably the very early morning hours.

Now you were starting to feel a bit anxious. Just what the hell happened last night?

>Whatever. Just stay put and sleep off this damn headache.

You decide that getting some fresh air would do you some good. You slowly and carefully get out of your cockpit and make your way down the ladder, being especially careful not to step on Lara. You pause and looking at your wingmate, sleeping peacefully on the floor. Not willing to just leave her on the ground like that, you glance around to see if anybody was looking, and then cover Lara up with your blanket. Judging from what you saw, Lara was probably the one that put it on you in the first place.

Leaving your wingmates to sleep it off, you stretch your arms and legs and walk out of the hangar and are immediately hit with a wall of cold air. It sends shivers throughout your entire body, but it also felt rather cleansing in a way. It jumpstarts your nervous system and you already feel much more clearheaded and alert.

Looking around, you can see the base was now dark and quiet, as per usual in the graveyard hours. Of course, the runway lights and the tower were still lit for night patrols and in case of emergency landings, but otherwise, the rest of the base was more or less dark.

What wasn't dark, however, were the Military Police jeeps prowling the base, Pretty obvious with those headlights and police lights blazing through the darkness.

Yeah...whenever the MPs were out, that was NEVER a good sign. That either meant there were enemy infiltrators inside the base, or the base personnel had too rowdy a night and now they were out enforcing curfew.

You were going to go with the latter explanation. Not wishing to be spotted, you quietly slip back into the hangar. That left you with a hangar with three sleeping wingmates. Not much to do, really.

Hm, while going back to sleep was a bit tempting, especially considering how comfortable your wingmates seemed to be, the mystery of what happened after you took that drink kept nagging at you. You had to find out in order to preserve your sanity!

However, you really didn't want to disturb your squadmates, so you figured you had to do it discreetly.

Glancing down at Lara, you could see a cell phone clutched in her hand. It was almost too easy. You quietly snatch the phone of her hands. Lara mumbles and shifts a bit, but is not roused from her slumber. You turn on the screen and it take you straight to the menu, much to your surprise. Then again, Lara did seem to be the extremely trusting type, so maybe the fact she didn't password protect her phone wasn't so surprising at all.

Oh boy, you were really starting to get some really weird temptations now...

You fight the urge to peek. You liked to think you were the honorable sort and you were already pushing your moral boundaries rifling through Lara's personal property like this. Best to just get what you were looking for. You immediately go to her photo album, where you see a lot of drunken selfies of herself as well as with you and the rest of the squadron, and a few pilots and personnel. You also noted you were quite visibly drunk. The photos grew progressively raunchy until it culminated into something that makes your heart stop and your eyebrows twitch.

You come across a picture of you and Lara sloppily kissing in the middle of an alcohol induced stupor. Thankfully, from the background, nobody seemed to have noticed this, but here the image was, forever planted in the depths of Lara's phone.

You thumb hovers over the DELETE button for what seems like a very long time. However, you decide that deleting the photo was the best thing for the both of you in the long run. You had a feeling it would bring nothing but trouble down the road.

And with one button press, that one picture was gone forever.

Sighing deeply, you continue on through the photo queue, and you see a video at the end. You play it, making sure the turn down the volume first. It just showing you taking repeated shots while the person holding the phone, presumably Lara was doing the same. The fact that the camera's nausea inducing shaking was a good indicator of how far gone she was. Suddenly, things are interrupted when Wolf drops down on the table in front of you, sending glasses and perfectly good whiskey flying everywhere.

"Hey ladies." He winks at the both of you when a big, burly Estovakian man, the size of bear, picks him up by the collar. The camera shakes a bit more, and then you see the camera shift. Lara's arm reaches out to grab a glass bottle, and bops it on the Estovakian's head.

And then all hell breaks loose. You lose track of what's happening until you see Lara, yourself, and Lilian and Amy stumble out of the bar, laughing and giggling like mad while MP sirens are heard in the distance. And then the video ends.

Huh, at least you were glad you weren't the cause of the fight.

And you let out a big, loud yawn. Man, you were way more tired than you thought. Maybe you really should get some rest...

But now you were in a bit of an awkward predicament. You had given your blanket to Lara and you weren't even or callous enough to take it back. Well, you could just return to the cockpit of your Phantom. It should still be relatively warm.

Or...

Or...

Ugh, you didn't even know why you were contemplating this.

However, your predicament answers itself when Lara wakes up on her own. Sitting up, she stretches and yawns. Well, more like roars as she releases all of the pent up energy inside of her. She then rubs her eyes groggily and instantly perks up when she sees you, as if the concept of a hangover was completely unknown to her.

"Oh, hey Karla, what's up?"

"Um, nothing." You say, quickly hiding Lara's phone behind your back. "Just taking a bit of a walk around."

"Ah, okay." Lara nods. "Ummmm... you don't happen to remember what happened? My memory for the past few hours is kinda fuzzy."

"Nope, I don't remember a thing, either." You shake your head quickly.

"Hmmm, now where's my phone? That's exactly why I always take photos with it..." Lara frowns as she checks her pockets. While she's distracted, you gently set it down on top of a cargo crate.

"Um, looks like you left it there." You point to the phone.

"Oh! Thanks!" Lara gets up and snatches the phone. She opens it up and immediately cracks a goofy smile. "Eheheh."

As Lara browses through her phone, you notice the sky was starting to brighten outside. Looks like the sun was finally beginning to rise.

"Hey, Lara, how about we grab some breakfast?" You ask.

"Ah, sure! I'm freaking starving!" Lara nods.

Thankfully, now that it was morning any active curfews were rescinded, and the MPs appear to have dispersed. Neither you nor Lara run into trouble when you sign out a jeep for a food run. Really, you and Lara just steal a couple pots of coffee and as much sausage, bacon, eggs, and pancakes you can physically carry before driving back to the hangar. Thankfully, Amy and Lilian are awake by the time you return, though like you, they were obviously hungover.

"Aaaggggghhh, my head." Amy grunts. "Every time!"

"It's to be expected." Lilian sighs, trying to put up a relaxed face but not quite succeeding.

"Well it's a good thing we brought breakfast, then!" Lara laughs.

As you all sit in the hangar among your planes, wolfing down much needed food and coffee, the subject of conversation starts to move to what you all were going to do with your leave time. Apparently, Artemis pilots were granted leave in between contracts, so you all would have a few days to yourselves.

Of course, it seemed your wingmates were all going to be returning to their respective homes. Lara to Emmeria, Amy to Ustio, and Lilian to Osea. That sort of left you to wonder what you would do.

"So, what are you planning to do?" Lara manages to utter between mouthfuls of bacon and pancakes.

"Ah, well, I guess it's an opportunity to see my family again." You sigh. "Well, I haven't seen my mother in a real long time. But then, I also have stuff to talk about with my Uncle, too."

"Hm, can't you just meet both at once?" Lilian asks.

"Eh...." You frown. "My mother and my uncle don't really get along too well. It's complicated."

Well, it was really simple, actually. Uncle still remained loyal to Belka, which was already a minus in Mom's eyes. However, you get the feeling that she believes Uncle was responsible for Dad's death. You just were always too afraid to ask either of them.

"Eh, I don't think she'd like Ustio that much anyways." Amy shrugs.

With breakfast done, you hear the intercom buzz.

"All Artemis units, prepare for departure in four hours. I repeat, all Artemis units, prepare for departure in four hours. Please remember to bring all important and mission critical assets with you, and it will be replaced at your own cost."

"Ah, well, guess we'd better start getting ready." Lara sighs.

"Actually, maybe it would be a good time for you to see Quint." Lilian suggests to you. "Usually he'll discount surplus items right before a pullout."

"He does?" You raise an eyebrow. "Quint doesn't seem like that kind of guy."

"It's mostly because it's more cost effective to sell stuff here at a discount rather than paying to ship it back home." Amy explains. "It's not uncommon for us to sell our hand me down equipment to local forces."

It will probably be possible, but not they'd have to be modified after-market to do so.

"Yeah, I'll talk to Quint for a bit." You say. "I'll be back in a few."

"Take your time!" Lilian smiles. "We'll make sure Smokey gets your plane ready to fly!"

With that, you make you way out of your own hangar and towards the one Quint set up shop in. As expected, the hangar is in a flurry of activity as crates are continually being loaded up and shipped out. Some of the crates were simply being moved elsewhere on the base, having been sold to the Estovakian government. Others, though, were being taken to the airstrip to be loaded on departing cargo planes.

"Ah! Karla! Nice to see you!" Quint says happily. "Come to browse?"

"A bit." You nod. "Was wondering if you had any discounts?"

"Well, when you captured that freighter convoy, you brought in a lot of fresh plane parts. Enough to even build a few entire planes out of, free of cost!" Quint says happily. "In return, I'll shave down the price of some of planes. Limited time offer!"

"Oh?" You raise an eyebrow.

"Yep. Also, if you feel you don't have enough cash for what you want, you could always sell your Phantom back to me." Quint says further. "In my estimation, the Phantom's resale value is probably around $5000."

"Okay, I'll keep that in mind." You nod.

I was more thinking that later-generation fighters tend to have higher power-weight ratios once AIR COMBAT starts being figured out, which means more weight for stuff - in a game where planes are famous for LOADSAMISSILES.

There's a difference between haggling, and not getting ripped off.

"lol lets give them like, a grand off."

>>36177379
Why the viggen?

Fulcrum would be excellent.

I'd kind of like to keep the F-4 for later, because then we can have one for air superiority and one for ground attack missions.

Also this is platant plot-bait for those MYSTERIOUS ADVERSARIES to buy our plane back and have mysterious cutscenes over our paintjob.

Apparently debt is a thing.

It makes sense that we would ship out with the phantom onboard our transport - due to the short nature departure of this - , and he'll just hold it as collateral.

Which i'm OK with.

Keeping the Phantom for nostalgia's sake and being ABLE to sell it off if we need the 5k makes sense to me.

Except for that.

In case you haven't noticed, the end-of-mission summaries/debriefings by the enemy commander, always always curious about this mysterious, solo, lone f-4 phantom.

Merc flat out TOLD us that the sale is BECAUSE they leave gear behind for the locals, because of the transport pain.

Add all this together, and suddenly our daddie's gonna buy the valkyrie's old ride with unforseen consequences.

thats why i don't wanna let our phantom go just right this now.

This is also why we should have gotten the cheaper plane - its an upgrade that won't break the bank, and leave us with some cash in the meantime.

Unless there's an end-of-campaign signing bonus.

Well, you were actually a bit reluctant to sell off your F-4, but progress marches on. Even though you were beginning to feel sentimental about the Phantom, you knew that if you wanted to compete, you needed a more modern airframe, and your Phantom was already pushing its limits going up against the type of enemies you were facing now.

"All right, Quint. I'll sell the Phantom and buy the Falcon." You sigh.

>Phantom SOLD. +$5000
>Falcon BOUGHT. -$17,000
>$700 remains.

"Excellent! You'll have your new Falcon by the time we return to base, then!" Quint smiles as he signs off on the paperwork. "You'll still keep possession of your Phantom up until it returns to base, in which it will be exchanged for the Falcon. Do you understand?"

"Yes, I do." You nod.

"Good! Nice doing business with you!"

Well... you had a new plane, you thought to yourself as you exited the store. You were hoping that maybe you would have time to break it into before heading off for the next contract. But first things first, you make a short detour, taking out your cell phone as you dial Uncle's number.

"This is Mr. Weiss, speaking." You hear his business voice.

"Hey, Uncle." You say, nervously twirling your hair with your fingers. "So about what you said last time, I'll be in Oured for the next few days. How about we meet then...?"

Thanks for the thread merc. So sad to see the Ugly go so soon though.

Yeah, unless you have any sense for plot

I was expecting some Red Baron shit where the enemy ace (the tiger striped flanker, perhaps) gets in our cockpit to try to get inside our head.

Its a neat way to earn a nemesis. Especially if there's the delicious family twist, where the enemy ace gets obsessed with the similiarities between someone they miss but logically know it can't actually be...

Different anon here, I see your point but I'd think that the locals would at least give the Phantom a repaint before putting it into service in their air forces.

Also, the enemy commander and pilots have to be more specific about the Phantom. Like did it have any special markings, or paintjob to set it apart from the rest? I'm pretty sure the pilots at the Demon's Edge got at least a good look at our custom Phantom.

God damn, we cleaned out the wallet with that purchase. Hope it was worth it, we really need to invest in special weapons in the near future.

The Falcon's asingle-seat, multirole fly-by-wire fighter with a helluva lot more maneuverability and tactical flexibility than our previous bird.

They're also a damn sight sexier than the old flying brick.

All that being said, I still hold out hope for a Rafale in the future.
