You allow yourself a small smile, before shaking your head. ...You don't really know if you want to have kids. In fact, the thought had never crossed your mind until now. You've always thought that you would never have time for that kind of thing, even before becoming Warmaster. YOu were resigned to the fact that you'd either be dead or Witched Out by the time you were eligible for retirement.

What's it like, anyway? Being...pregnant and everything.

"Oh, it is disgusting! Absolutely disgusting!" Kharn cackles. "Every day I am having to say hello to last night's dinner because of morning sickness! And then, there are strange and mysterious fluids leaking out of you from down there whenever you so much as sneeze, or cough, or even just think about how nice it is to be having clean underwear on for one..."

Wait, what? That's...that's how being with child is like? But you thought--
>>
>>36200835

"Oh, that is not the worst bit, Murderface!" Your former Warmaster shakes her head. "See, you get an appetite for the most unhealthy and disgusting things! You get, ah, how do they say it..." Kharn snaps her brutally-clawed fingers. "...Cravings! Yes, cravings for the most disgusting things. Like for example, raw bear meat! No cooking, not even a minute on the grill, just as raw and as bloody as it can get! That, and orange juice with coffee!"

Okay, the raw bear steak thing you can understand, but orange juice with coffee doesn't sound too bad--

"Without sugar! Or vodka!"

...Alright, you're officially sick right now. No. No more. You shake your head at Kharn, holding up a hand in surrender, the other clapped over your mouth. No more, for fuck's sake!

"Ahaha, but it is not all bad, Murderface!" It's here that Kharn's expression grows soft, almost tender, as she looks down at her blouse-encased belly and brushes her claws over the small but obvious bump.

"I know you will laugh at me for this, I am sure you are already doing so - but there is life inside me, Murderface. Life that my own body has made, and not by the clumsy machinations of Venenum or even the corruption that has turned me this way." She shakes her head, giggling to herself. "A-ahaha, listen to me, I do not even believe I am talking like this, I do not--"

It's here, suddenly and abruptly, that Kharn blinks - and then laughs, blushing. "Murderface! Comrade Murderface, they are kicking! They are saying hello!" She looks down at herself, and whispers something in Russian that manages to sound almost affectionate. "Naughty children, interrupting your mother talking to your godmother like that!"

[1/2]
>>
>>36200842

You stared at her, then. You couldn't help it. Sitting there in your office, dripping wet from your interrupted bath with only a towel for modesty, you stared as the person that was once known as the most terrifying Magical Girl ever contracted in history - for that one single moment - didn't look like the the skull-taking, blonde-conquering monster that she was.

For that one moment, she stopped looking like a sharp-toothed, black-clawed, long-tongued thing from someone's nightmares made manifest and more of the young woman that she was supposed to be. The mother she is now becoming.

Before the whims of incubators and broken, cackling goddesses stole everything away from her.

...Well, anyway. You clear your throat awkwardly after a few moments, trying to shake off the feeling that you're intruding upon a very private moment - before finally managing to tell Kharn that if you wanted to throw up every morning, then you'd just go back to your old habits.

"Ah, so that is a definite no, then, Murderface?" The dark-haired, black-eyed Russian chuckles, and it's here that you feel Midori's eyes on you, the hand on your shoulder tightening somewhat. ...Heh.

"Not exactly." You reply. "But something I'll definitely be thinking about."

Kharn explodes into laughter here, just as you catch Midori's inward gasp - and succeeding panicked breathing - behind you. "Ahahaha! Well, I am looking forward to seeing you make that big decision, my friend! Maybe, when our little rascals are out and unleashed into the world, we can schedule playdates or something, eh? Hahaha!"

You smirk, shaking your head at the impossibility of it. ...Well, impossible or not, it doesn't sound all that bad. Besides, you know, babies generally being annoying as all hell and a pain to take care of besides.

[2/3]
>>
>>36200857

The call goes on for a few more minutes, with Kharn mostly grilling you on how the Officio's getting along. It ends with the former Warmaster grinning and talking like the tension from earlier didn't exist at all - and if it did, it was something that she'd already shaken off.

"Do not let me keep you for too long, Murderface. I know I interrupted something very special, so I will end the call now." She'd cackled. "Whatever you decide to do, I wish you good luck in your approaching hunt. I will call again soon. The Blessed Lady protects." You winced just slightly at her goodbye, but wished her the same luck with her pregnancy before the call finally disconnected.

Well. That was a...strange call, you note as the screen of your laptop goes black. Of course, Kharn had always been strange, but to see her and hear her so...afraid of something, to the point of tears - that was something you'd never thought you'd see, besides her being a happy mother. And the way she kept looking down and clasping her hands over her stomach--

You shake your head. Not the time for that. Definitely something you have to ask about later, but not when you still have a Prophet to save. And a bath to finish.

"...Sempai?" Midori murmurs your name, just as you stand up from your seat - and you blink as you turn towards her. She's still blushing, that much is clear, but she seems to have just finished crying, too. Wiping her eyes with one of the ends of the towel she'd wrapped around herself. "Did...did you really mean that? About...h-having k-ki...k-kuh..."

...Kids? You finish for her. The green-haired Callidus nods after a moment, now so embarrassed that she's hiding her face behind the bit of towel she'd been sniffling into.

Ah. Huh. Well...

How do you respond?

[]Well, do you want kids? Because if you do, you're the one having them.
[]It's a bit too early to think about that, isn't it?

Midori's problem with kids is that she tries too hard and isn't firm enough. On the other hand, she seems to have gotten a handle on Misaka, so that's a step forward for her and her anti-kid aura
>>
>>36200900 >>36200902 >>36200904 >>36200931

You consider Midori for a second, before shrugging. Does SHE want kids, then? Because if she does, she's the one having them.

"E-EH?!" The green-haired Callidus all but shrieks, before clapping her hands over her mouth to muffle the rest of her panicked, blushing outburst. You let Midori squirm and panic for a few delicious moments - carefully keeping your face impassive as you watch her go completely in both embarrassment and confusion - before you put her out of her misery with a tousling of her wet, thick hair.

It's too soon, you tell her as she looks back up at you, crimson eyes wide and staring. Too soon to decide, what with all the bullshit that's been happening - the Prophet, the Golden Weapons, Pinky. You're not exactly opposed to the idea, but if it is going to happen, then you want it to be when all this nonsense is over and done with first.

...Christ, listen to yourself. Months ago you were only worried about where your next paycheck will be coming from - a paycheck that you'd spend on booze and nothing else. Then you became a watch-wearing dildo, suddenly worrying about paperwork and subordinates and all that crap. Now, what, you're actually considering KIDS? Jesus.

"D-don't jerk me around like that, sempai," Midori grumbles as she punches your arm, slowly recovering from your little prank. "But...but I guess sempai's right. I'd like for all of this to be fixed first before, um, before we consider something like that." It's here that she takes your hand, smiling as she does so. "Sorry for suddenly popping that on you, though, sempai. I was just...well, seeing Miss Valnikov being so happy like that, I--"

Jealous?

Midori blushes again, before nodding. "K-kinda, sempai. I'm...I know it looks a certain way, but...well..." She stops here, seemingly taking a conscious effort to do so, before shaking her head and pulling you back towards your quarters. "L-let's just finish your bath, sempai. The bathwater should still be hot, l-let's not let it go to waste!"

You smirk and allow yourself to be pulled along. In truth, you're relieved she's moving on from it, too. ...You don't really mind having kids - at least, with Midori, anyway - but to think that far ahead, after this was all over? That felt like optimism bordering on delusion. You'll do your best to make sure Midori gets through the other side of this entire mess alive and intact, but you're not so sure about yourself.

"Ah, it's still good!" Midori cheers as she dips a hand into the fragrant, steaming water. "Hop in, sempai! It'll fix you right up!"

...Sure, why not, you shrug. A discarded towel and a slow, meandering soak later, and you sigh as the tension in your body ebbs in the scented, heated bath.

Hnn. Not bad. Not bad at all.

But something's missing, you note.

"Eh?" Midori blinks. "W-what's missing, sempai? I made sure everything's--"

Her, you point out. She's not in the water with you.

And there's evidently more than enough room - you bet five people can fit into the damn tub easily.

Midori is silent for a moment, before she smiles and shakes her head. "I...I drew the bath for you, though, sempai. This is supposed to make you relax--"

And you'll be more relaxed with her in the tub, too, you cut her off petulantly, splashing her with a bit of water. Get in, you insist flatly. Warmaster's orders.

"...Jeez." Midori shakes her head again, smiling and blushing at the same time, and she lets her towel fall to the floor before climbing in. "What am I going to do with you, sempai...?"

>>36202108

Two hours later - freshly bathed, freshly showered, and freshly dressed - both you and Midori find yourselves back at the Incubator's Office, Muramasa in hand, and along with the rest of the Kill-Team that you've selected.

Half of the rest anyway, with Mami and Wendy still conspicuously absent.

Kyoko and Sayaka, on the other hand, seem to have arrived well before you - the couple clearly preoccupied making last minute checks on their equipment. A quick glance towards them reveals that Kyoko seems to be favoring the gold-plated spear that Misaka had given her long ago - the one with the sharp, angular blade and the underslung gun attachment. Sayaka meanwhile is fiddling with one of the straps securing Blueberry Cheesecake Brownie to her waist, trying to get a better fit.

And in the center of the office itself, standing beside your Incubator as he sat before his array of monitor screens, is the hardsuit-clad form of Chitose Yuma, her helmet's vox-speakers emitting low growls as she conversed with Kyuubey. She notices you staring and gives you a curt nod, which you return.

Well, at least she seems to be up and about, you note. With the wounds she sustained and the subsequent three-day operation she went through, you're impressed that she's pushing for this mission almost immediately after waking up.

"I'll go and check on Kyuubey-san while we wait Mami-san and the rest, sempai," Midori squeezes your hand, before stepping past you to join Yuma beside your Incubator. Both mutant cat and Culexus turning to acknowledge your Callidus' entrance, which Midori herself marks with a polite, yet elegant bow. ...Something she learned from Mami again, too, no doubt.

You leave Midori to continue her conversation with Yuma and Kyuubey, and walk over to Kyoko and Sayaka instead - the two Eversors now doing last-minute checks on each other's gear. Your best friend looking up to grin at you just as Sayaka tightens what appears to be a shoulder holster around the red-haired Eversor, one already bearing two rather oversized ammo magazines of some unknown caliber.

"Yo, Murderface!" Kyoko greets you cheerfully, before wincing as your Equerry cinches her holster around her frame with a sharp pull of one of its straps. "O-ow! W-wait, Sayaka, I think that's too tight! I can't breathe!"

"It has to be tight, idiot, or else it'll fall off. Either put up with it or stop eating so much." The Blueberry snaps in reply from behind your best friend, before turning to look at you. "Guess who finally decided to show up. Took your own time, did you, Murderface?" Her eyes stray to the Muramasa in your hands, and you could see her lips twist into her trademark disapproving frown as she takes in your rather...negligent way of carrying it around. "Want a waist holster for that? Looks like you'll need it. What's your dominant hand?"

...Well, you're not sure about that, but you shoot your Desert Eagle with your left hand most of the time, so--

"Here. Wear it on your left, since you've already got a gun holster on your right, anyway." Sayaka tosses you a thing of thick straps and metal buckles, and after a bit of time and confusion, you pull it on. You slip Muramasa through its utilitarian sword loop, and surprisingly enough, it fits perfectly.

"No need to thank me, I just hate seeing a sword like that being carted around like a fucking rifle." Your Equerry smirks at your grateful expression, earning her an elbow at the side from your best friend. "Ghh. I clearly meant to say, 'you're welcome'. Really. No joke. Kyoko, stop fidgeting, dammit!"

Right. Well. It's still pretty handy.

Orders? You blink. But you haven't even said anything!

"You were thinking it, though." Kyoko chimes in, grinning. "Er...no, I ain't readin' your mind or anythin', Murderface, but we kinda know what a superior officer looks like when she's about to order us to do something completely stupid."

"Right." Sayaka nods. "And right now, you look exactly like that. So, out with it, Warmaster. What do you have for us?"

How do you respond?

You take a deep breath and tell your Equerry and your best friend about what you learned from Kharn. Not everything, of course - you leave out the bit where Kharn specified Kyoko - but enough. Enough for them them to know and realize the deadly seriousness of the situation, one that has one of your Kill-Team's lives at stake.

To their credit, both Eversors take it well enough, Kyoko's one eye merely widening in silence but then nodding in acknowledgement, just as Sayaka did.

"Figures there'd be a catch like that," Your Equerry growls underneath her breath. "You've got all this bullshit with the Prophet and the Golden Weapons, and then there's this Akashic Realm thing on top of all this. And we had to hear it from Kharn of all people. Great."

She shakes her head. "Fine. I don't like it, but fine. Any one of us gets downed before you get Oriko, I'll bring them along with me, too. Just..." Sayaka looks at you, hard. Her own eyes, blue as polar ice and twice as cold, bores into yours. "Are you sure about this? I mean, it'll suck if we don't get to save Oriko, but maybe if we just--"

No. You shake your head. Kharn tried that same tack with you during her call, and you're having none of it. You promised you'd do all you can first. You promised you'd save her.

"Alright, alright. No need to chew my fucking head off, Murderface." Sayaka holds up both hands in surrender. "Everyone'll be out before you do whatever it is that'll make Oriko less of a psychopath terrorist than she'll ever become." She puts her hands down and nods grudgingly. "Thanks."

Right. What about Kyoko, then?

"I'm...I'm good, Murderface. I gotcha." Kyoko flashes you a grin and a thumbs-up sign, but you can tell her heart's not in it. For one, she looks as pale as a sheet. "Whatever kinda crazy stuff ya got planned, I'm sure it'll pan out."

She shakes her head a moment later. "...Sorry for pressurin' you to do this, by the way. ...Saving Oriko, I mean. I made a really big deal about it, and I think that got your attention, but, you know. If it's...if it ain't on the cards, it ain't on the cards, and I don't wanna trade my best friend for another. Alright, Murderface?"

You nod, before bumping fists with Kyoko. You'll do your best, you tell her. You'll try anything first, and then when all your options are spent and nothing's working, it's only then that you'll go for the kill-stroke.

Kyoko nods here, murmuring thanks in gratitude. With nothing else to talk about - Sayaka now seemingly in the middle of contemplative prayer, and Kyoko still having a bit of a problem with her gear - you help your best friend get her stuff straightened out until the mission briefing finally begins with a clearing of Kyuubey's throat.

At the same time, the remaining members of your Kill-Team finally arrive.

"My apologies, Kyuubey, Warmaster," Mami says breathlessly as she steps forward, impossibly elegant even in her hurry, Wendy in tow - and your own breath catches in your throat as you see her, once more, in the subtle beauty of her own Magical Girl costume. "We were slightly delayed due to some issues I needed to deal with personally."

Mami was...well, beautiful. There was no other word for it. After seeing her in her business outfit for so long, that office lady getup that did nothing to flatter the soft, divine physique it was containing - to see Tomoe Mami back in the costume that had made her legendary among all the Twenty Officios was breathtaking.

The ribbed stockings. The short but modestly-primped skirt with the dark offset piping. The slimming, accentuating corset. The detached sleeves, starting from slim fingerless gloves to bare skin, and then continuing once more in a gentle puff of blouse-cloth. Her trademark yellow ribbon, expertly tied. Her furred beret, set far back, along with the flower casing of her Soul Gem. And who could forget, how it was all crowned by a thick, luscious mane of golden-blonde hair, teased into luxurious drills.

Mami. Tomoe Mami. Your personal goddess of victory.

Wendy, of course, was...Wendy. You remember her costume - a pink sweater-dress that ended precariously just above the knee bore her signature strip of checkered squares, a simple two-square row, three squares long, over and across her chest. This checkered theme, of course, is one that's repeated on the other pieces of her costume: her scarf, her stockings, and the big ribbon cinched around her and tied behind her back.

Across her waist and hips are knife-holster straps, crossing over each other, with one doing double-duty with what looks like a beam katana hilt hanging from it, clinking against the sheathed combat knives. It was a costume that, while not definitely as elegant as Mami's, was just as deadly and eye-catching in its own right - and it helped that the girl wearing it looked good in it, too. If only she just stopped looking at you like she wanted your head to explode, or something.

With your entire Kill-Team present, it's here that Kyuubey begins the briefing. Or rather, Yuma does, her vox-amplified voice echoing through the cavernous Office. Your Incubator, who usually takes the lead in this type of thing, seems content to sit back and provide visual assistance through projected holograms, creating them whenever the Culexus needed a point.

[3/4]

Yuma is quick and concise, just like her predecessor. She tells your Kill-Team all it needs to know: how she's going to send the five of you to the exact destination that she learned from Lucius, what the location itself seems to be like, the expected resistance and how she'll be sending you back.

"Corruption only happens during long-term exposure to the Akashic Realm, and this operation should be quick enough for the threat of it to be minimal." Yuma's voice leaves her helmet's speakers in an emotionless, brutalized growl. "I can't provide any info on just what kind of environment you'll be teleporting into, but I do believe that it is an abandoned building or skyscraper. A structure that climbs upward, something like that."

The Culexus reaches up to massage at her throat before she continues. "As I'm sure everyone here knows, our main priority is Mikuni Oriko, also known as the Prophet." At Yuma's pause, Oriko's dossier flickers into being in midair, showing her demurely-smiling face for all to see. Beside Sayaka, you can see Kyoko mumble something before turning away.

"We have reason to believe that she is in command of more than a hundred potential hostiles, as well as having access to a Golden Weapon. This makes her the most dangerous threat we've ever faced so far, so please exercise caution when engaging her." A pause. "Once she's been dealt with, I will bring you out of the Akashic Realm the same way you came. Any questions?"

Well, that sounds easy enough.

How do you respond?

Let's try this again!

A cry of pain echoed in the halls of the Olympia, Ashlin's screams drowning out the ambient noise. She thrashed about on a surgical table, held down by straps as the Apolakreon surgeons hovered over her.

<What's the situation?>

<Ashlin McHale, Eversor. Scheduled for muscular and skeletal augmentation. Body is in constant pain due to it tearing itself apart. A drawback of her contract it seems.>

<Why couldn't her Officio handle her anymore?>

<It was her decision. Fubey went along with it after she begged him to let her go.> Surgical equipment was pulled in as the surgeons began prepping their patient. <They tried to convince her to stay but...>

"P-please make it stop-o-o-op." The girl's thrashing slowly waned as her strength faded. "I can't take this anymore..."

The fleshwrights grasped their tools as the preparations were finished. <Very well, if that is the task we were given, let's get to it.>

An Irish Girl's Wish Part 2: Guard Duty

~~~~~~~~~~
"WAKE UP, LADIES!"
Ashlin woke with a jolt, her emerald eyes slowly adjusting to the light as her confusion waned. A tall, slim figure stood in the doorway, silhouetted by the sunlight seeping in. The rest of the girls immediately slipped off their hammocks, awake and standing in seconds.
The figure stepped forward into the quarters proper, her grey metal form giving off a gleam in the light. "McHale, what's takin' you so long?!"
"Oh, uh, sorry!" Ashlin slipped out of bed, her panty and bra clad body flashing as her steel blue armor turned over her. Stumbling over her clawed feet and feathery skirt tail, Ashlin quickly stood next to the other girls.
"When I say get up, I mean GET UP! Do you understand me?!"
The five girls all nodded with confirmation as the sleek, grey Ironform began pacing around the front of them. "My name is Lyssa Forax. I'm the head of this project and until further notice, you will answer to me." Her androgynous form watched the girls closely, silver-blue LED eyes glowing brightly. "The memorial project is very important and I will not have anyone running around without my say."
Maria coughed gently, getting Lyssa's attention. "Umm, permission to speak, ma'am?"
"Granted."
"What about Miss Stroud? She's the Eversor leader here, right?"
"Did I fucking stutter?" Lyssa quickly slid in front of Maria, standing nose to nose with the 6' 2'' red head. "Unless otherwise noted, you will answer to me. If I give an order, you will follow it. If Leah gives you an order, you will follow it unless I say otherwise." Stepping away, Lyssa scoffed at the anger coming from Maria's eyes. "DO I MAKE MYSELF CLEAR?"
The girls bellowed out a unified 'yes ma'am' as Lyssa stood in front of them all. "Very well. As was discussed yesterday, four of you will break into two-man teams and rotate 12 hour watch shifts. Maria and Edea will take the sunrise to sunset, and Ashlin and Natalie will take sunset to sunrise." Lyssa then crossed her arms, staring at the group. "Any objections?"
Natalie spat, gritting her teeth. "Why do I have to do guard duty with the coward?" She jabbed a finger towards Ashlin, giving the young Irish girl a quick glare. "She'd probably run at the first sight of trouble."
Lyssa stared at Natalie, giving quick glances to Ashlin as she spoke. "You don't get along with Ashlin I take it?"
"'Don't get along'? That's putting it lightly. I'd say it's more of a borderline hatred." She crossed her arms, scoffing at Ashlin. "You should've seen her on the few training sessions I've done with her. She's a waste of space."
"Well, there's a good reason the Warsmith sent her instead of someone else, and I intend to find out." With a quick turn around, Lyssa began to exit the sleeping quarters after giving one last quip. "Oh, and you'll still be doing watch duty alongside Ashlin. Disobey, and you will be punished accordingly." The door closed with a slam, making Natalie jump in surprise.
"That...that fucking bitch!" Natalie stomped her feet and clenched her fists, a look of frustration smeared over her face. "Why am I stuck working with Ashlin?"
Edea let out a long sigh, looking tired of Natalie's shit. "What do you have against her anyways, huh? Really, Ash has done nothing wrong to you, yet you treat the girl like she's less than trash!"
"Have you seen her fight? As I said yesterday, she can't fight worth a damn! I've trained with her before, to test my reflex augs, and all she did was block and dodge. She didn't even TRY to fight back!"
Maria stepped between the two girls, holding them at arms length. "Edea, I'll handle this, okay?" She turned to face Natalie, her eyes nearly drilling a hole through the grey eyed Eversor. "I told you yesterday, not to make me tell you to calm your shit." Maria narrowed her eyes, clearly angered. "You gonna make me tell you again?"
"No, no, I'm calm as all hell. I'm just pissed that I have to deal with HER every night."
"You want to disobey a direct order?"
Natalie opened her mouth to retort before clamping it shut. She pondered for a moment before turning to the girl she loathed. "You keep to your shit and keep your eyes open. I'll have no problems if you can AT LEAST do that."
Ashlin nodded her head quickly. "I'll do my best!"
3/11
>>
>>36205327
"Well, you two," Maria yawned and stretched, pointing to the door. "Edea and I have to get started on our shift. Get some extra rest if you can, since you'll be on watch all night."
The two new night watchers nodded as Edea and Maria began their first shift.
~~~~~~~~~~

The compound entrance's overlook, while simple by design, provided efficient cover and viewing for whoever was on guard. Six inch thick steel crenelated walls surrounded and protected the compound, and the entire top jutted out to deter would-be climbers and ladder attempts.

Maria examined the mesh catwalk, running her hands over the steel hand rails. "Hmm, decent setup they have here. Pretty open at the front and the mountains behind provide decent cover from the rear."

"You know people can still come OVER the mountain, right? It's not as if the rear is impenetrable."

Maria looked at her partner, a sly smirk registering on her face. "You would know how that feels, wouldn't you?"

"N-not while we're outside, please. I reeeally don't want anyone eavesdropping on our private conversations." Edea blushed lightly as she stepped forward, leaning on the railing. "Besides, I thought you didn't talk about that stuff out in the open?"

"Fine, fine." The tall redhead slid behind her shorter lover, embracing her over the shoulders. "You win this time, shorty."

The young magical girl couple stayed in their embrace as they watched the sun slowly make its way up the horizon. The rock and grassy plains ahead of them were silent, save for the mid-spring breeze and the rustling of grass.

Maria nuzzled her face into Edea's golden locks, taking in the scent of her hair. "I thought I was going to lose you, ya know."

"Hmm?"

"During Walpurgisnacht. I thought you were going to die..."

4/11
>>
>>36205347
Edea rubbed her head against Maria's ample bosom, making the latter scrunch her nose. "We've been over this before, hun. It's in the past, no need to worry yourself over it, 'kay?"

"Yeah, but-" Maria gripped her pint-sized lover tighter. "-but even thinking about it scares me."

"Hey, I'm right here." The blonde Eversor held Maria tighter, lifting her head to look deeply into her Maria's eyes. A small, gentle smile rested on her lips. "I'm fine. Not to mention, if I didn't get hurt, we wouldn't be here, ya know?"

Maria held Edea's gaze for a moment before she, too, made a little grin. "Yeah...heh, I still remember how scared you were just to get those prostheses." She giggled as she brushed a stray lock of hair from Edea's face, giving her a coy, teasing look. "You were all like 'but what if it hurts?! What if my arm and leg take over me!?'."

Edea slid around, lightly punching Maria's chest with her still fleshy hand. "Stop making fun of meeee."

Maria chuckled, tousling what hair of Edea's that wasn't tied back. "I can't help it, it's fun to pick on you sometimes." Her expression then turned serious as she stared into Edea's golden yellow eyes. "Any word on your brother's condition?"

"No. Not for a while. Don't think word got to them that I transferred. I'm glad Kyuubey allowed me to keep tabs on my family, but it's hard when I'm away for a while."

"And with everyone recovering after Walpurgis, that's probably not high on his priority list...Miss Malal would have already taken care of it as soon as the transfer was final, I bet."

"I miss them, you know." Edea closed her eyes, resting her forehead against Maria's chest. "We lost so many..."

"I miss'em too. A lot of brave girls died protecting their loved ones. That's why we're building this monument in their memory." Maria held her companion close, the redhead's eyes watching the horizon. "As long as we keep their memory alive, we will never be alone."

Most carbonated stuff's pretty acidic. You can probably counteract that with either a tums/alka-seltzer, or with saltine crackers or bread.

Lyssa sat behind her desk in her private quarters, Nokota sitting in front of her. The light flickered on and off before Lyssa stood to smack it.

"Damn thing's been on the fritz for a while now. Can't be assed to fix it, with everything that's happened."

"So, what did you need me for, Miss Forax?" The nun fidgeted in her seat, her usually dark skin growing pale from nervousness. "Is it something important?"

The grey metal Ironform sat back down in her swivel chair, spinning herself slowly. "I have some questions and a request. The Warsmith told me the real reason you're here." Nokota squeaked, her eyes becoming wide and still. "So it was that big of a secret, eh? Considering what it is, I'm not surprised."

"Please Miss Forax-"

"Lyssa."

"Miss Lyssa, please don't let this out. It could jeopardize my entire operation!"

"No worries. I may not like meatbags like you, but an order is an order. The Warsmith gave the information to myself only. As long as you keep out of trouble, you should be fine."

Nokota breathed a sigh of relief, muttering out a breathy 'thank you' as she gripped her large, silver cross to her chest. "That's good to know."

6/11
>>
>>36205392
"Now about your tasks around here..." Lyssa flicked her fingers, producing small streams of light that formed a hologram. "I want you to assist me with inventory and general control of this op." The hologram came together more clearly, revealing a list. Names of various metals, construction materials, and miscellaneous items scrolled by, some with 'ETA 6 Days' next to them.

"Inventory? But I'm here for negotiations. And my mission."

"Yes, yes, but you're not going to be sitting here doing nothing on my watch. I highly doubt you'll need to do much negotiating anyways." Clanging her metal fingers together, Lyssa closed the hologram list, staring intently at the young nun. "So, you have inventory duty. And whatever else I feel I'll need help with. Am I clear?"

Before Nokota could respond, a loud thump came from the right hand wall, making both girls jump. A louder thump and muffled shouting made them stand up, both eyeing the wall next to the Eversor quarters.

"What the hell is going on in there?"

~~~~~~~~~~
The Eversor quarters were quiet, save for Natalie's exercise induced grunts. Ashlin laid on her hammock, drawn into a book.
Natalie jumped up from doing her push-ups, sweat dripping off her scantily clad body. "Hah...hah...you know, Ashlin, if you don't do some kind of exercise, you'll wind up getting flabby and weak. Why haven't you been doing anything? I've never seen you do any kind of exercise."
Ashlin's eyes darted up from her book, her eyes focusing on her companion. "Oh, umm, I really...can't do stuff like that." Her eyes darted to the side, nervousness overcoming her face. "I wind up getting hurt bad."
"That's because you don't do anything. Your body isn't used to exercise, of course it's going to hurt."
"That's not what I mean. I...get really hurt, like I'm out for a few days kind of hurt."
7/11
>>
>>36205411
Natalie narrowed her eyes, not satisfied with the statement. "Because you don't do things properly." She trotted over to Ashlin's hammock, standing over the younger magical girl. "Or is everyone from the 17th like that? Weak, spineless, and unable to do anything on their own without fucking up?" Natalie quickly smacked the book out of Ashlin's hands, the book making a small THUMP against the far wall. "Or maybe, just maybe, it's just you."
Ashlin stared up into Natalie's eyes, her face contorting between anger and fear. "What the hell, Nat?" She attempted to get up to retrieve her book, only to be blocked. "Just let me read, please!"
The silver eyed magical girl stood her ground, moving to stop Ashlin from venturing forward. Snatching a hand that attempted to push her away, she once again brought herself nose to nose with Ashlin's face. "This is why no one wants to be your friend. You're too cowardly and can't even make a move against me."
Ashlin yelped in pain as Natalie twisted the captive girls hand slightly. "H-hey, that hurts! Stop it!" She tried to pull away, but Natalie's iron grip didn't relent. "God dammit, what the hell is wrong with you?!"
"You are, that's what. Always scared, can't fight back. Why were you even sent here?"
Ashlin glared at her agitator, her mind clouded in anger and her eyes clouded in tears. Without so much as a thought, she belted out a line that was uncharacteristic of herself. "Why were YOU sent here?! All the Tenth knows how to do is kill! It's not like they can actually PROTECT anything, let alo-"
Next thing Ashlin knew, she was sent across the room, slamming into the far wall next to Leah's quarters with a loud THUMP. She slid to the floor, pain shooting through her jaw as her eyes focused on Natalie.
"You do NOT speak of her like that, YOU GOT ME?!"
8/11
>>
>>36205424
Natalie stormed over, her breath becoming ragged. She looked down upon the Irish girl, eyes filled with rage and words filled with venom. "YOU KNOW NOTHING! AND YOU HAVE NO RIGHT TO TALK ABOUT HER. EVER." She kicked Ashlin's face, blood splattering from her nose. "I WON'T LET YOU INSULT THEM LIKE THAT!" Straddling the bloodied girls stomach, Natalie began laying punches across Ashlin's face. "I WON'T LET YOU INSULT -HER- LIKE THAT!"
Ashlin tried to block the blows, but only succeeded in pissing off her attacker more. In between the pain, her tears, and the blood, she saw a sight that she thought she'd never see; Natalie was crying. Her eyes were filled with fury, but covered in the familiar wetness Ashlin knew too well.
Before either could do anything more, the quarters door burst open, Lyssa and Nokota rushing in. They froze in their tracks as they spotted the fight in front of them.
"WHAT IN THE FUCK IS GOING ON IN HERE?!"
Natalie stopped mid-swing as she spotted her superior and the 14th's emissary. She quickly bolted to her feet, leaving the sobbing and bleeding Ashlin on the floor. "This isn't-"
Lyssa's eyes glowed bright as her digitized voice filled the room. "I WANT TO KNOW WHY YOU ARE BEATING ASHLIN'S FACE IN. RIGHT NOW."
"I, uh, we just-"
Lyssa stormed forward, nose to nose with the black haired Eversor. "STOP YOUR GODDAMN STUTTERING AND GET TO IT!" Glancing over to Nokota, Lyssa motioned towards Ashlin, the stunned nun quickly tending to the bloodied girl.
"Sh-she insulted a friend of m-mine! I wasn't gonna stand for that!"
"So you felt it was necessary to beat her face in!?"
"It-just-"
9/11
>>
>>36205446
"No. You're coming with me and you're telling me everything. Now." Lyssa grabbed Natalie's arm and began dragging her away. "Nokota, take Ashlin and get her cleaned up. I'll want to talk to her too."
"Yes, Miss Forax." Nokota helped Ashlin up, some of the still fresh blood smearing her outfit. "Come on Ash, let's get you fixed up, 'kay?"
~~~~~~~~~~

"So, what happened Ash?" Nokota gently wiped the blood off of Ashlin's face, careful to avoid her broken nose. "Why was Natalie hitting you?"

Ashlin sobbed in pain, wincing from the pressure. "I th-think I said something bad about her old friends." She took a deep breath, calming herself through the pain. "I didn't mean to upset her..."

Both girls stayed quiet as Nokota finished cleaning the blood and spun Ashlin to face her. "This may hurt a little, okay?" She grabbed her oval choker Soul Gem, focusing the magic through her hands to heal Ashlin's nose. The girl cried out as the bone and tissue slowly healed back together. "There, all done~. Can you breath better?"

Ashlin nodded, staring at the floor of the general supplies building. She wiped her tears away as she took another deep breath. "Did I do the wrong thing?"

"The wrong thing? No honey, no." The nun pulled Ashlin's bangs aside, gently patting the girl's head. "But I do think you could've went about expressing your anger a little different."

"Yeah, but...but every time I get angry, I cry and want to run away."

Nokota pulled Ashlin into a hug, holding the girl tightly. "Everyone does that from time to time. No need to worry yourself over it, okay?" The two then sat in silence, a somber air taking hold of the room.

"...Nokota, am I a coward?"

10/11
>>
>>36205461
"Hmm?"

Ashlin looked up into Nokota's blue eyes, tears coming up into her own again. "A-am I a coward?"

Nokota chuckled gently, wiping a few black bangs from Ashlin's face. "No, I don't think you are. You stood up to Natalie last night and you did SOMETHING to make her hurt you, so you're obviously not willing to run away."

"But why do I feel like I'm still a coward? I thought when you contracted, your wish came true?"

"Oh? What was your wish?"

"...I wished to be as strong and brave as my dad..." Ashlin began to sob as her few memories of her father came to her mind. "I-I've always been scared of everything; but my dad, he was the strongest and bravest man I knew."

Nokota thought for a moment. "Maybe he wasn't as-"

"No! You're wrong!" The emerald eye Eversor glared at Nokota. "My dad is the bravest a-and he...and he..." Her sobs grew greater, drowning out whatever words she wanted to say.

Nokota just smiled as Ashlin began to cry harder, burying her face into the nuns small chest. "It's fine Ashlin. Just let it all out, okay?" She gently stroked Ashlin's hair, the young Irish girl muttering lightly to herself.

"Daddy...I miss you."

..:: AUREA VENEN || PART 2 || SERZAH & CYNN ::..

To this day, I'm still not sure how everything could have gone so wrong. Not even a year ago I was just a normal girl, living a normal life in this city -- now a shitty shadow of its former self. I had a place to call home, a stable family, and numerous friends.

Yet as I stretched my arms, the dark metal extremities whining from the motion, none of it seemed to really matter anymore. The city went to shit and became infested with abominations of man-made origin, bringing terror and slaughter in their wake. That's what I've become a part of, in a single instance that I can't even remember happening, and it's now my 'normality'. I imagine that's what it feels like to wake up in a holding cell one day and find you've turned into a monster with black metal shit for limbs; not to mention the...urges. Of the friends I had, the ones who weren't already dead, I'd probably end up tearing to pieces myself - or worse.

The chair I'm sitting in -- as comfortably as I can manage -- creaks a bit as I lean back against it, the leather rather cold against my bare back. Aside from my legs and shoulders, that was the only place this excuse for a magical girl costume didn't cover. It could be worse, arguably, but that doesn't stop it from being rather detestable to wear. It even has all this frilly stuff on the front which just gets in the way. It'd be fine if you were wearing it to look cute, maybe even a bit sexy, but in battle the results would probably not be as attractive.

I rake the metal claws through a portion of my hair, being careful not to accidentally gouge myself as I've done in the past, when I hear a rustle at the doorway.

In a blur of motion, a length of black metal pierced through the chair and stretched to the doorway, said length being one of the two tails idly swaying around me prior. The fleshy crunch behind me confirmed that I had hit on the mark, and I turned to look at the unfortunate victi--oh...

"...That makes for the second time jus' ta'day, Serzah! Ya' kiddin' me!?" The small girl with the large hypodermic needle now jammed through her right thigh placed her hands against her hips. What could be seen of her brow behind the mask she 'wore' was clearly furrowed. I sighed in relief after realizing who I had just impaled, the rather nasty wound I had inflicted on her wasn't showing any signs of bleeding.

"You should know better by now not to sneak around in the dark like that, Cynn. I'm still on edge after the last dirty little Calli that tried to kill me. Ahh~ She sure was pretty cute though once I /stripped/ her of her stealthing~"

With a rather sickeningly moist pop, the needle was pulled back out, returning to join its fidgeting twin. My hand slid along its segmented form, curving it around to my lap where I began to meticulously clean off what gore did end up on it with a nearby rag. Even monsters should keep their weapons in good shape. "I apologize though, only because you're cute."

"'Cause I'm cute..." She reiterated, still sounding rather peeved with me, "...saying that may work on me, but it won't get'cha out of every bit of trouble ya' bring upon ya'self. Also, I was'n sneakin' around, I was coming ta' say hello, for ya' information." After she finished her lecture, she walked over to me, flopping her small frame straight into my lap. Her leg was already completely healed, as if the wound had never existed in the first place, as expected of a fellow Ven.

"Hey, I'm trying to clean your blood and shit from my tail, move it." I chided her, which just made her twist and wiggle around, splaying herself across the combination of my lap and the chair's armrests. "Nope, this is ya' punishment for ya' mistake. It's what'cha get for makin' me waste meds, ya' know." It wasn't possible to tell through the large beak-shaped mask, but I knew underneath it she must have had some sort of smirk on her face just from the tone of her voice. I scowled down at her a bit, before relenting and going back to my tail cleaning, small girl in the way or not.

"Gotta say though, ya' lap is pretty comfy, what with all the metal bits an' such. Bit stiff, but otherwise comfy."

"No one asked you. You're lucky that you're wearing that mask." I said with a small grin plastered on my face.

"I'm lucky? That's a pretty random thing ta' say." Her fingers coming up to fiddle with the edge of the large hole in the mask's design. It was the only portion that didn't cover her face, primarily focused on her left eye. "I like ta' think that this mask is ma' best fea'cha, not ta' mention it looks cool."

"Let's just say I don't think I'd be able to hold back. Thus why I say you're lucky~"

"Oh my, how intimidatin', ya'd do such terrible things ta' ya' close an' only friend, eh?"

"You say I don't have any other friends as if it were a bad thing. If I wasn't concerned with poking an eye out, I'd kiss you right now as return punishment." The clawed finger of my right hand came up to prod against the white stained apron of Cynn's costume, making a point to not accidentally tear the fabric with it. "You'd better watch your butt, sis."

"Hehehe, always such a kidda'." She giggled, giving my cheek a playful slap with her hand. I was silently glad she wasn't an Ever, as that would have stung like a bitch if she was. Trust me, you never want to be slapped by an Ever--ever.

"So have ya' seen any of the other sista's around? They've been pretty quiet lately, ya'?"

I shook my head after briefly considering if I had or not. It had only been a few months since the incident, so most of the surviving sisters were probably laying low, now that they'd tasted their freedom. Once the chaos from all the gangs and the few remaining magical girls died down completely, that would be the time to return to the playing field. At least, that's what I had decided was the most appropriate course of action, and I imagine Cynn agreed. "Nah, haven't seen them at all. In a way, I sort of don't want to."

Cynn's facial movements hinted at a mixture of a frown and confusion -- mostly confusion. "Why? They're our sista's, they are'n interested in hurtin' us, and we could even work togetha' to survive!" Upon the exclamation, she threw her arms above her head, her way of emphasizing the optimistic declaration. The way she said these sorts of things was so adorable, that it made me wish I wasn't such a pessimist sometimes.

"I know, but who knows how long that'll last? Right now, at least, I don't think it's a good idea at all. Too many people are jumpy and itching to kill, best to just leave them to their own devices until the flames die out."

"Mmmm.... I suppose ya' have a point, especially some o' them... Pretty craz--" I suddenly held up a finger to my lips, signaling her to be quiet. It was pretty faint but I'm sure I heard voices down the hall, and this being an abandoned building, could only mean company.

After a moment longer, sure enough, it sounded like a group of people were walking towards our side of the floor. I gave Cynn a further signal for her to duck behind something and hide, and she slipped off my lap to do such. As for myself, I moved behind the musty bookshelf adjacent to the door, as quietly as my metal legs could allow me to that is. My tails were curved back, ready to greet anyone who decided to poke their face a little too far through the door frame.

"All right, bitches, listen up. This is as good as place as any to hole up for the night, but you gotta make damn well sure it's clear first. Don't fuck this up or you won't wake up in the morning, evac is coming to bring us out of this hellhole at 0700 sharp, got that!?" The voice echoed down the hall very clearly, not too far away from my position.

"Yes ma'am!"

Oh great, it's a squad of them. Fucking brilliant.

Riddle of Witch Flesh part 7

Panna raised her arms and made a single loud clap with them, as to break Martina out of the trance. "So," she had said, "what have we learned?".

Martina massaged her eyes a bit, and looked at her. "That stuff happened. That's not how you teach anything, though. You've left out the part where you always tell us what to think." That's right. Facts are boring without perspective. You need to add an opinion. People learn from comparing opinions, and all that.

The gypsy had responded first with a nod. "I believe we have already gotten yours, unless you'd like to add something. I can add mine, then we can listen to what the others think."

Toyen had commented on that with an incredibly annoyed expression, raising her face from the table. "Fuck, I know this. The point of this is going to be that the truth is in the middle and that nothing is anobody's fault. Yeah, Panna, that's totally fucking watertight."

Martina was too interested to let Toy derail the conversation, though. "Let's all agree it's the cat's fault and move on." Usually, we think alike. I still had something to confirm, though.

"So, if I understand this correctly, she was a Witch hunter and nothing else. Did the same job as me, except without a right to vacation."

"Yes." Panna answered right away, since she had probably expected the question. "Extermination of newborn Witches. That is what the Warmaster of Twelfth does."

"How many did she kill?"

Again, she replied without a second thought. "Let's see. The exact number would be in her file, but I'd say a bit over five hundred would be about right."

Toyen gave that a low whistle. It really was amazing. "Shit, that's four every day. If it's all in the four months, then she's giving even the Second and the Sixth a run for their money. Is that, like, all the Witches we make?"

[1/14]
>>
"We make a lot more. They get rid of much of ours already. Along with the Fourteenth." Having sat on the edge until now, she sat deeper back in the chair. She must have been feeling tipsy, too.

It seemed quite far fetched to me, though. "Numbers are cool and all, but Witches can be pretty deadly. Did you really have one person with no assistance handle so many? Sounds stupid." It made me feel useless, too.

All the time, I am complaining that Witches are too crazy to reliably approach from the tactical standpoint, and there was a girl that brute forced her way through hordes of them, just behind the corner? Looks like power does beat technique in the long run.

"Yes. Despite the lethality, a Warmaster of Twelfth stays for four months at minimum. At least so far. Well, I wouldn't risk deploying her against an alpha, because that's a suicide mission every time. There had been ninety of these so far, though obviously, they weren't called Warmasters until the Officio system was established, so the ones that didn't last as long don't count. It really all began when the potion came in use. Juunibei contracted a lot of girls over the years, and they've formed several groups. I do believe that the Potion is why he chose the one I led, the Cult of the Black Rose, to be the one that forms the Officio's core."

"So, ninety, by four... that makes you... at least forty years old."

Panna giggled. It might have been something else, but the wrinkles on her face made it hard to tell. We had to assume that she's dying and laughs about it.

"Can't you prolong your life? I mean, you're a Venenum, you've gotta have some ways."

"I do, but I don't like that perspective. It would not be natural". Irony in the room was reaching critical levels. "More seriously, I'd be a brain in a jar sort of a thing. Or a gem, rather. I have sent a lot of people to their end, it would be just distasteful if I couldn't accept mine."

Amazing.

[2/14]
>>
I wan't sure of the extent to which she was joking, but she still touched upon something important. "This is the first time in ever that I've heard you talk morals. If I didn't know you've got grandchildren, I'd have said you're just a psychopath."

Martina joined in with a wry face. "Don't forget what Jackdaw says. Someone so obviously evil cannot possibly be a bad person. Too much evidence."

"It is debatable." Panna had said. "I've only ever gone against the Incubator's wishes once, and that was a very special case. My life is one of making ends meet."

The Vindicare took a moment to stomach that, while Toyen was playing with a cigarette in her hand, frustrated that she can't light it here. "How the fuck are we even going to go about this? Do you want me to like print out a paper with these, like, check boxes, look at my girls, go 'yeah, these dozen are good to go' and then just like pretend to forget to give them Seeds or something?"

This question, in its bluntness, seemed straining to Panna, and even made her shrug. "It's much more complicated than that. This will take time to-"

"I'll listen to that shit later. I've heard just enough that I can walk out on you now." She had straightened up, and rammed her cap, which she would usually cover her millimeter cut hair with, on her scalp. "I've got a standing assignment, and people to stalk. Or something. My boss is the cat, not you, and this time he didn't order me to do what you say. He said to talk to you, and I did. Fuck this, fuck you, I am out."

Martina had opened her mouth on her, and I don't know whether she had meant to tell her to cut it out, or to just remind her of her own shift at the gate in a few hours. Either way, she ended up saying nothing, because Toy wasn't there anymore. Ripples were spreading over the concrete wall she walked into, and she must have already been swimming through the hundred meters of ground and steel, towards the surface.

[3/14]
>>
"Flashy," I've said, "she should have just used the door." What a waste of her reserves.

"She had always known this,", the hag had noted to nobody in particular. "She'll come back. In a way, only flipping out now makes her the biggest hypocrite of us all."

That's hard to argue with. So I didn't. I took a swig instead, the last bottle of beer now almost done with. "It's amazing how you admit that this is being a hypocrite, though."

"See, Jarmila. Hypocrisy is being in a conflict of interests with oneself. And that describes what we do perfectly. But it cannot stop me. Because... well. It's an imperative, I can't reason with this. I've seen the Incubator's purpose, and now it's my own."

She had taken off her crown and turned it around, staring at the Soul Gem in it intently.

"There are causes that go beyond good and evil, beyond right and wrong. The Librarians may look detached from reality, but their field of study is so expansive, it can't be avoided that they get a bit lost. Each of them has a pointer of her own, and when they argue, it's good, because it brings them a bit more together."

I don't even think I remember most of this right, but the next part is clear in my head as day.

"For example, take the Riddle of Witch Flesh. There is a very particular meaning to it. You know the Hegel point theorem, about Witches? The Riddle is tied to it's proof."

That was the thing about quantity becoming quality, right?

"Yes. All mass is attracted to itself and will grow, as a result of a basic universal rule. But there is a point at which it ignites, and transforms. And another, where it collapses. Like a boiling point. The Riddle is like that. There is a power gap, a jump, that makes a Witch become an Alpha. What causes it? It must have to do with emotion, and it must be a special feeling that not every person had ever truly felt. In those handful Magical Girls, it must have been nurtured into full bloom."

[4/14]
>>
This sounded familiar to Martina. "Are you just talking about love here?"

"I... wouldn't say that. If you had asked me twenty years ago, I would say yes, but now, I am not so sure." Another shrug passed through her face, like she was recalling something unpleasant. "Love, my dear, is like a poison. It's too destructive and messy, too much of a double edged sword, to be the right answer."

The bottom of the bottle was accusatively glaring at me, reminding me of my last - and only - boyfriend. Sometimes, I even have trouble recalling his name. Would you believe that?

"What about faith?" I've proposed, "That seems like a pretty leading human thing to me, maybe it gets passed because you wouldn't normally call it an emotion? I mean, if I get this right, this is all about power. When I look at the Fourteenth, and then us, I see their beliefs making them strong. And we are taught to doubt everything but orders. The point of forcing everyone to read is to encourage critical thinking - and we are weak. How about that?"

Panna had smiled. I've really never seen her display this much emotion, or talk this much. "Belief is a good answer I think, right up there with hope. But neither really satisfies me. Maybe the emotion I am searching for doesn't have a name, or it's something as basic as "awareness" taken to an extreme. An underlying human emotion you wouldn't even know about. My favourite answer at this moment is 'understanding', though."

Martina ran fingers through her bangs, she probably felt pressed to also thing of something smart. "We use it as a meditation puzzle anyway. Like, a question that's meant to be asked, a character defining question."

That's how esoterism is born, I hear. When a question torments you for too long, even a simple one, you make it into a divine mystery in your head. Being governed by something you don't understand, you can't expect others to understand you. So, you lock yourself up in your tower.

[5/14]
>>
I've completely forgotten about my hatred for Panna at this point. "What about Kamile? She is an Alpha, and she wasn't a love struck girl, or a nun, or anything."

"In Kamile's case, I think, it must have been "fear". She had wished to be a child forever. So, she could never get over such a basic thing. I should have known. She grew, as a child, and the childish fear of the unknown grew with her. You know, I never was like you, a believer. In anything. I never thought persistence had merit. But she proved to me that purity does. Perhaps, if she were at it for an absurdly long time, for thousands of years... I am sure human souls have it in them to surpass even Kamile."

She kept looking at her own soul all the while, just as if it was a holy symbol that confirmed her beliefs.

"Well, not me. Somebody else will have to figure out where it all leads. I should go too. It would be absurd, for me to get emotional."

Following Toy's example, she put the crown back on and stood up, but unlike her, she stopped at the entrance. "I'll tell you the rest later today. Karmic spots inside the city will take a while to go over, I should prepare some maps for it, too. Since I don't feel like dying just yet anymore. There's also the Librarius, that's it's own can of worms." Would we really get access to that? Us?

It seemed that this session was done with, though.

---

My next steps led to the Archive. I didn't want to give Renata the pleasure of news and the displeasure of being yelled at just yet. It would have been better to prepare for this, and so I've asked the japanese Librarian - her name being 'Umika', as she had already told me many times, and said so with a sour face - for two operative files.

[6/14]
>>
The first had belonged to Karolina Sokołowska. The girl who held her sword like a virgin holds the prick, and then seemed to grow so much further without my guidance. Unsurprisingly, most of that was classified with an A, and stashed elsewhere, so not even I could see it.

I was allowed to get my hands on her background, though.

I've expected an abusive household, and her killing her father or something grim like that, but it wasn't really anything of the sort. Her family was poor, and she ran to fantasy books from her bad grades and lack of other things to do. Then her parents had her to do a retail part time job when she was fifteen, to get money for her family, and that seemed to emotionally drain her enough to agree to the cat.

It's not even inhumane, compared to other stuff that goes on in Poland. Definitely boring, compared to all the other life stories we've got here. Martina's in particular is a real gem of Hussar pride, next to this one. Karolina's story was even boring compared to mine - and it just adds up to my guilt, how meaningless my own case was. In the end, it seems she really did make the wish out of boredom, because she had wanted to spice her life up so desperately.

And did she succeed at that. Kája, you stupid, stupid bitch. You should have just stayed home on your arse. You should have only fenced with nerf swords in your nerd clubs, you should have only been killing monsters in video games.

Who did she kill in the end? I couldn't tell then, but I know that now, so why not say it already. It's not like it affects anything anymore. He was a loan shark's son, twenty six years old. I guess he must have been into something seriously bad if she considered him enough of a monster to kill him with the sword for Witches. The cops just did the "did he have any enemies" thing, and after they went through the list, assumed that it was his father's former client or a hired gun.

[7/14]
>>
The fact that he was killed without torture, cleanly, by a long blade through the heart, was the slightly baffling part. If I was the detective on that, I'd conclude that he screwed with some sparklies, which was exactly the case.

She must have teleported into Prague from Krakow to do that, though, which proves Panna outright wrong about how much time Kája may have left. Just an interesting note.

I should also say this: Incubators seem to have certain tolerance towards long-time employees. Not everybody is necessarily as trigger happy on civilians as the Assassins or the Murderers, but there's still an us vs. them mentality we have for the normals. This is going to sound awful, but it's the truth: she could have gotten away with straight up murder. She was the goddamned Warmaster, even if only in name, and I somehow doubt Panna would mind, either. As long as Kája did her real job right, didn't get caught red handed, and only did something of the sort once.

There, that's all there is to Kája. Any more words would just further spoil the already miserable tale.

For the second file I've asked for, I had to know the person's name first.

"The girl who left with the circlet this morning? That would be Karla Wagner." Umika sat across me, whatever she was doing in the bookshelves before was not that important, apparently. "Worked right here, in the outer circles. I had her look things up for me a few times. Do you know if she was on meth or something? She really looked that way. Or was she somehow tied to that... Kuchekuchika? I still can't spell her name. It's like a tongue twister. The one that soaks her gem in red absinthe before scrying. The head seer here."

"Haha, she does worse than that." It wasn't really possible for me to redeem Řeřicha, that's just the way she is. "Pretty sure that this girl must have been taking something she wasn't in control of, though, Řeřicha wouldn't allow her to do as much."

[8/14]
>>
"She rammed into a shelf, hit herself on my door handle, and would drop books, or leave them lying, yes. That shouldn't be allowed. But I remember she also fell from a ladder once, so she was probably just that inept. Still focused underneath it all, though. As long as you actually got her attention."

Umika had then leaned in, quzically. "Say. Do you have a lot of experience with addicts?"

What an odd question. I couldn't say yes to it.

"You probably do, though. You only think of her doing drugs right now, but addiction is the way people work. One of the many ways to approach psychology from ground up. This is something that really helps you understand people. We are different by what we choose to be weak towards. Or don't choose, but end up being, and that's the worse case. Think about it for a while."

That's an old one. As old as mankind, even.

Humans are born dependent without doubt. This is instilled in both genes, and in how we've built up society. You can argue that being born is an asset by itself, but after that, you'll grow up in debt. If you refuse this notion, you will start affirming what you can't help but subconsciously feel with artificial dependencies, up to even the drugs. Former addicts are usually religious. They were weak people to begin with, they needed guidance of some sort, and this kind won't get them killed.

But you see the exact same pattern in people that never did anything as dangerous and socially reprehensible. Such as, when rich kids become vegetarians. They don't do it just because, as they'd like to claim, they do it to compensate. And there is nothing wrong with that. Anything to believe in works.

Because the important part is, that they couldn't choose how they were born, but they chose this. Even if it looks nonsensical from an outsider's point of view, for them it's the kind of restraint that makes you strong. Something to hold onto, that makes them confident. Like an oath, a geás, if you will.

[9/14]
>>
It's because limiting your options and allowing yourself to think less makes it easier to focus, an atheist would say.

While Umika was looking up the second file in the endless office drawers, mumbling letters to herself in funny english, I've tried to figure out where she was actually going with this, just like when I've been getting similar lessons long back in the basic training. She must have had something else to point out about Wagner, but wanted me to come to it on my own.

So, I thought on her some more. She didn't seem to care for herself a lot. She was without doubt an addict of some sort. She had an utter lack of presence. She threw arms around, which means lack of control over her motor functions. Umika was obviously implying that she was just obsessive about something, like stalker girls always look horrible. But that's just the start of the thought line, and it didn't really seem to be the case either. It probably wouldn't give me the best grade on the test she gave me here.

I've wanted to believe that a Librarian would be beyond saying things just to look smart.

There wasn't much else to say about herself, but thinking outside of the box, there is always the context to look at. From the standpoint of the commanding officer, Umika seems to say that she lacked skill and talent, but not discipline. At least not in the sense that Vanus understand it. I would call it Orwellian, but that's not a good comparison, since we are actually encouraged to realize. It's just that it also makes us realize how powerless we are against it, when we consider the scope.

Hence, Wagner was the perfect product of the Twelfth. She wanted to be used.

Does the Incubator groom these dependencies in us, when he strongly enforces vague rules? Resulting in discipline?

Or does he encourage thinking for ourselves and trusting nothing, because you can't rely on the rules? Resulting in personal empowerment?

[10/14]
>>
With Wagner, it seems that the ideal is somewhere in the middle, resulting in weak will, but strong personality, if that makes sense. I guess that's not strictly a bad thing, considering our purpose. But it is "corruption", in every sense of the word.

By becoming blind to what has power over us, like an addict, we become led by wires we don't see.
By becoming focused on our path, like an actor that reads his lines rather than like an athlete that would seek to expand his freedom, we lose our strength.
Still, there is power to be found within this - we become tools, just like that train.

It causes cognitive dissonance, if you don't live in it for years. It's easy to mistake power for strength. You will generally ignore one or the other side.

Even I didn't realize this with such clarity until then. I guess an outsider like Umika would better know just what to point out. Because I revel in my perceived self-sufficiency, and wouldn't normally consider myself an addict, I didn't really think this way until then.

Wagner's file was resourceful and confirmed what I've thought. Made a wish to save family business which apparently dealt with furniture. Her most unique magical girl gimmick was her skill at math, which is just about the lamest one I've ever heard of. The Librarian who taught her was indeed Renata Lichtenberg - the non-deformed surname making it clear that she is not native. Her notes gave off the feeling of a teacher that tears the skin off you, and expects nothing less then perfection. They seemed anal to even me, and I am no expert on the topic. From memory, these are supposed to be offenses:

[11/14]
>>
"Fixed a few letters with a liner and thought she could get away with it."
"Interrupted a scrying session. Argued she couldn't use a Seed in her trance state. Convinced she can't learn to."
"Questioned the reliability of wording the Gathering contracts with Sixth had, but only after having finished sealing them all."
"Still couldn't work with Pascal after two weeks."
"Woke up from only a ladder being moved near by."
"Has never heard of the Blood Knight."
"After being taken off the task for ruining too many, inquired whether weaving a magical signature seal on documents ranked E is a waste when we could just stamp it with ink. Couldn't do them right any more today. Rest granted, still has two whole stacks in F-4 to go through tomorrow. Assigned to a cram course afterwards."

Strangely enough, this worked with Wagner, while it almost never does with anyone else. Towards the end of the file, Wagner has got all Bs and an occasional A, where Renata probably didn't manage to find any fault.

And then she sent her to try out what turned out to be a highly volatile piece of machinery, and she died horribly, and the cat said that Renata is going to want to hear just how horrible the death was, with juicy details. I had really wanted to smash that bitch's face already. This was wrong from every imaginable perspective - human, incubator, mine.

Umika had asked casually whether I've learned anything, and I had to truthfully reply "Nothing I couldn't guess." This seemed to tip her off that I am actually really serious about this all, and after slight hesitation, she offered a penny for my thoughts. Kája's Witch being possibly related to the ever-elusive harvest Witch Libuna would probably intrigue her more, but that was classified to hell and back. At least I could still share Wagner's whole story with her.

So, I did that.

[12/14]
>>
After I was done, it turned out that I wasn't. Umika reaffixed her glasses on the bridge of her nose, looking deep into my eyes. She seemed to weigh her upcoming words on her tongue for a while. Finally, she said it. "It's a pretty boring Witch, for a professional. So, well. I'll try to stick my nose in. Why are you so bothered by this? Could you give me a hint on what makes this one so special? You didn't know her yourself, am I getting this right?"

Right. "I am just grabbing the first thing of the sort that I saw, I guess. There's going to be big changes around here soon." The girl before me didn't even flinch at such news, just listened with perfect focus, like a sickeningly well brought up kid. "I may be actually more or less in charge then, so I want to do a bit of a cleanup first.", I told her.

"You seemed like you've got something more to say. Like, your opinion on that story. You shouldn't keep that in. Tunnel vision, outsider's perspective, and all that." She placed more of her body on the table, further lowering her stature, already tiny next to mine. I guess she wanted to look like a humble listener, and it worked. This girl knows how to pull people's strings.

Alright, I could have used advice. Before I knew it, I shared a bit more of my worries with her.

Both files had in common the utter lack of closure. What were you supposed to think? The lives of these two were all sound and fury. Not to say that the laws of storytelling apply to reality in any way, but it really made me want to make these lives count. To make them into martyrs, twist them into something they never were. Immortalize them in form in which they would never want to live.
It's absurd. The number of individual girls I see come and go every year has four digits. There was no way I could ever fix anything, lest I forced some twisted justification on in it, completely detached from what I felt.

And that wouldn't be right. Screw what the cat and Panna say, these girls were dying in vain for all they knew. I understood too well why this was happening, why I had to allow it, and the fatality of it all was killing me. Made me want to burn down this whole place, because no world sustained by something like this could be worth it. I couldn't stop thinking about it anymore, trying to reach some sort of a resolution.

But I could still go on and finish my job. It's how I lived for five years. Kill one more Witch, and then tomorrow. I've gotta do what I've gotta do. Martina had once asked me why I never have a breakdown like everyone else, and I honestly didn't know what to tell her.

I can't believe I still consider myself sane. Not a good person, though. In the end, a lot less people suffer, all because I don't care about it as much as I should, and have enough integrity to save the pieces when everything breaks. I hear this a lot. That I am so strong, I can live with anything. I won't be crushed - no matter how much it hurts. "Fortitude" is the right word. But at this point, it's not an admirable trait, it's something monstrous.

Umika laughed at this, to my boundless bewilderment. "Bullshit. That's a good trait. Real talk, I could tell you whatever switch in your head does it and help you fix it, but I guarantee you'd feel robbed." Her voice now on a much lower pitch, it felt a bit like finding the gangster in a group activity game. She was saying some outrageous things, at that. "If you aren't in a hurry, would you come with me? I think I may have some things to share with you myself."

Looking back on it, I realize she acted oddly from the start of this all. Like she knew this wasn't an everyday victim check, like she already knew the news. I suspect she may have cheated with her magic a tiny bit, to get me to open up more.

And, you know what? I'll be damned if that wasn't the start of a good friendship.
