Welcome to Banished Quest!
You take the role of a young mage labeled a criminal by his people and cast out into the wider world. In the last thread you meditated with Mortia, read with Chrys, received a fancy letter from the Shah, and wrestled a dragon.

You find yourself sitting on the floor, leathery wings wrapped around your torso. Despite being a newborn, Zahak's wings are already large enough to envelope your upper body entirely. You can only imagine the size they'll grow to once he actually begins flying. They'll need to be absolutely massive to support his eventual, presumably titanic weight. Though you suppose some of the difficulties inherent in flight can be alleviated to a degree with magic, using fire magic to create updrafts or some such.

You're roused from your thoughts by Zahak bumping the top of his head into your cheek. Were his horns not nubby little protrusions of bone at the moment it might have hurt, but you get the feeling that it's more of an affectionate gesture than anything else. You scratch at the base of his horns briefly, before wreathing your hand in flame and running it along his flank. You're not sure why he seems to enjoy that. Perhaps mothers bathe young dragons in flame or something like that?

You try to extricate yourself from your dragon, but it's having none of it. You pick up curiosity, a wish to learn, ambition. These emotions and desires mix together, seeming to pervade your dragon's thoughts. It wants to know how you did what you did, how you made copies of yourself. It wants to know more about Fire magic, and the sort of magic it saw Aunty using. Unfortunately, you're not entirely sure who it thinks its 'Aunty' is. You're assuming Chrys, since that's who it's spent the most time with besides yourself. Then again, you don't think she's cast any magic in your dragon's presence.

Once we teach Zak how to speak, we can work on properly conveying to him the steps on meditation.

>You're going to have a real hard time communicating until he learns to talk. Start trying to teach him words.
I kind of don't want him surpassing us.

Not really, Soma said on his ask that he's weaker than us and our magic is better than his overall.

His abilities in fire magic seen to be base solely base on instinct. There is a lot we can teach him Vatis and Vys related. Even if he is more or less our equal in fire our abilities on Water, Earth, Metal and Nature are beyond him for a likely extended period of time.
>>
>>36210214
we would stomp him, but why are you even bringing it up?

Plus Water > Fire.
>>
>>36210249
We do need to teach him to meditate eventually. But first basic civilized skills like speaking

That's like teaching your child martial arts before how to use the toilet properly.
>>

Nah, Mik could still beat him, Soma confirmed him to be weaker than Mik, not too mention Mik knowing some marsala-whatever and his spear.

As an aside, can I suggest at some point we try teach Ricky to read/write so we can communicate bi-directionally with him (and avoid screeches).

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Legal_status_of_cartoon_pornography_depicting_minors#United_Kingdom
>The Coroners and Justice Act of April 2009 (c. 2) created a new offence in England and Wales and Northern Ireland of possession of a prohibited image of a child. This act makes cartoon pornography depicting minors illegal in the UK. This Act did not replace the 1978 act, extended in 1994, since that covered "pseudo-photographs"—images that appear to be photographs. In 2008 it was further extended to cover tracings, and other works derived from photographs or pseudo-photographs.[39] A prohibited cartoon image is one which involves a minor in situations which are pornographic and "grossly offensive, disgusting or otherwise of an obscene character."

You urge your dragon to get off of you, mentally. Eventually it relents, but only after you promise to teach it something cool. Well, that's not quite accurate. You give it the vague impression of something cool happening in the near future, you didn't quite understand how to properly conceptualize teaching. You try to focus on the transfer of knowledge but you just got a sense of confusion and a vague fear in response.

You decide to go about teaching your dragon to speak, since communicating solely via emotions and urges is difficult. You start with the simple stuff. You point to yourself and say. “Papa. Paaapaaa.” You compliment this by focusing on a mental image of yourself, the memory of Zahak hatching, and the concept of paternity.

Perhaps it's merely because it's a concept he already understands, but Zahak seems to pick up on it pretty quickly. {Papa!} It compliments this by bumping its head into your knee from where it's seated in front of you. You reward it by scratching at the base of its horns.

You decide to go through this same process with a few items around the room. Unfortunately, once you get past the words 'ash', 'bed', 'friend', and 'door' you're more or less out of things to go through. That is, until an idea occurs to you. You've got twelve crates sitting in your cloak just waiting to be pried open and exploited for a lesson just like this one. You've no idea what might lie inside, but that just means it will be an adventurer for everyone involved!

>>
You whip off your cloak and lay it flat against the ground, permeable surface facing the floor. When you whip it away, a crate sits in its place. It's large, and sealed with bright red wax. The symbol of El-Amin has been burned into the wood and stamped into the wax. You do this four more times, laying out each crate in succession. Your dragon gets quite excited by this trick of yours, and charges around the room after you so it can watch every time. Once you've got all four laid out you hold out a hand and let a blast of fire roil across the surface of the crate, quickly melting the wax.

This excites Zahak even further. He joins you, letting out a blast of flame which incinerates the top of a crate completely, rather than just melting the wax. You praise him gently, but scold him for being so reckless. He'll need to be more careful if he wants to use Fire magic for anything but killing things. You show him again on the next crate, this time using less heat so the wax melts slower and he can get a good look at what you're doing.

You also take the opportunity in the meantime to try and teach him the concepts and words for both 'wax', 'melt', 'crate', 'fire', and various other things. You're not sure how well he understands, but it IS just his first lesson after all. You've got plenty of time to teach him. Once the wax is melted you extract the nails that pin the lid to the crate with metal magic and lift the lid with nature. Your wide ranging talents seem to impress Zahak greatly, if his thoughts are any indication.

Finally you get a peak inside the crate. What you find confuses you, at first. It's fish. Loads and loads of fish, from what you can tell. Your dragon seems quite pleased, as he quickly grabs one between his jaws and lays down on the floor with it, tearing off a long strip of flesh. However, in the process of doing so he reveals something beneath.

the cheesy slice of life and poorly written anime style fight scenes werent enough to keep me invested, at that point
>>
>>36213909
more like 4, don't kid yourself.
>>
You reach into the crate and withdraw a bundle covered in wax paper. Peeling it away you find a lump of some blackish-brown, sweet smelling, oily substance. You rub your finger along the surface and bring the residue that rubs off to your nose, inhaling deeply. Immediately a sense of relaxation, contentedness, and the vague desire for a nap strike you. The smell itself brings to mind memories of your Master's study, and the thick blue smoke that hung everywhere in the air.

This is some really, really high quality opium. This would sell for a god damned fortune in the right place.

You check the other three boxes. The crate that Zahak scorched the top off is packed on top with a heavy iron sheet. Pulling this away, you find bolts of fine seasilk. It's still the undyed brown of natural seasilk, but running your hand along the fibers you find it to be unbelievably soft. This too would sell for a fortune, and you seem to have quite a lot of it. Fortunate that they separated each layer with a iron sheet.

The first box you melted the wax off of and the last box you pulled out of your cloak both contain more fish, and beneath that more opium. You seal the lids back onto each of the crates to avoid your dragon getting a taste for the drug, fortunately the fish it nabbed doesn't seem to have been contaminated or stuffed with any of the substance. The last thing you need is a doped up dragon.

You go through the process of teaching it the concepts and words for fish, opium, sea, ocean, silk, and various other terms. You also try to teach it a little about value, but it seems more concerned with gnawing on the head of the fish it grabbed from one of the crates. Regardless, you drape your cloak over each resealed crate and in a moment each one vanishes within, much to Zahak's amazement.

(3/5-6)
>>
>>36213876
I could have phrased that better. She has a life expectancy of about 60, and that's relatively soon.
>>
You lay out five more crates, each one identical to the previous three. This time Zahak helps you melt the wax off the tops without burning off the top of the crate entirely. You're lucky the flame burned hot enough that it just reduced the wood to ash, rather than actually setting anything on fire. The smoke would really be a problem right now if that had been the case.

Carefully, you remove the nails from each crate using Metal magic. When you push aside the lid from the nearest crate, you find inside incense, and lots of it. Fragrant woods, sweet smelling herbs, dried flowers, oil extracts, all kinds of substances used both for religious ceremony, public festivity, and private decoration. In Pidjata, these likely wouldn't sell for much. Pidjata is where these sorts of goods are produced, after all. Then again, the same is true of the opium. Both the incense and the drugs would likely sell better to the North, in the successor states.

The next lid you open is not full of incense, but rather iron ore. Not particularly valuable, but it might be good for barter if you can find the right buyer. You find two full crates if raw ore, perhaps a hundred pounds in all. You'd want to talk to a blacksmith if you wished to sell it, you imagine.

(4/5-6)
>>
>>36213937
>This is some really, really high quality opium
kek
>>
>>36213937
Opium was used as a "cough" remedy for fussy children. Who knows. Might be useful.
>>
The last two crates you extracted contain something altogether different. Wiring. It looks as though someone went through a Rhynian facility and stripped out all of those strange bundles of black cords that run along the corners of buildings. It's all coiled neatly into bundles stacked on top of one another or pressed into the sides of the crates. You must have hundreds upon hundreds of feet of the stuff. Skull Kid ought to be thrilled.

You go through the process of explaining what everything is to Zahak. Wires, iron, ore, metal, you go off on a long tangent about Metal magic that you doubt Zahak understands a lick of. Once you've explained everything you can think of, you pack each of the crates you have out away, letting them slide into your cloak with Ricky's help.

Finally you lay out your last three crates on the floor. You're eagerly looking forward to what you might find inside, especially considering everything that you've found so far. Between yourself and Zahak you make quick work of the wax seals, and then you set about extracting the nails from the wood. When you push aside the lid of the nearest crate, you find inside... junk. Junk parts from a dozen different artifacts. You note a few shattered remnants of an Archeota, a few things that might have once been the gem you have embedded in your Shockwave Sword. None of it works though. It's just useless junk. Each of the three crates is filled with the stuff. Why would someone pack and ship this?
(5/6)
>>
You explain to Zahak the concepts of worth, and lack thereof. You also talk about the concept of a part, and how parts can come together to form a greater whole. You're not sure how much he understands, but regardless you reseal each crate and let your cloak pull them back inside.

But first, we should dump the junk and the wiring on SK/Fulvia and tell him/her/them to look over it and see if they can make some use of it.

Here's the thing. Mortia is exhausted and while she can control plants to move them away or attack stuff, I'm pretty sure she can't use nature to dehydrate them in order to prevent Nature vatis from using them to detect the dragon. As a master Vatis, I'm pretty sure we're capable of that. Also, we've got the staff to further bolster our anti-surveillance capabilities.

Whoops. Forgot the last one. To anyone who's not savvy, Zombie and Witch Quest is an open-world quest about a Russian Mobster's son and the witch who resurrected him after a vacation gone really wrong. It's run by no other that /tg/'s infamous Papa-N, and while it's in Haitus right now, Papa-N has stated he'll be trying to continue again this year. http://suptg.thisisnotatrueending.com/archive.html?tags=zombie%26witchquest It's definitely one of the best quests on this board and anyone who hasn't heard of it before should give it a shot.

You move over to your bed and sit down on the edge, so as not to impinge on Chryssa's leg room. It seems your caution was unnecessary, as a moment later your dragon hooks his talons on the edge of the stone platform and hauls himself up onto the bed with surprising ease. He lays himself out across Chryssa's lap, she seems unaffected by the scalding heat radiating off of her body, and begins to make that strange chirping noise at her.

She sighs, closing her book with a soft thud. She reaches down to scratch his horns but he nips at her hand, she ends up grabbing his snout gently and moving it back and forth, he tries to get at her but can't quite manage it with the way she's grabbed him. While teasing Zahak, she looks to you. “He seems quite excited after your little presentation.”

You sigh, nodding. “I know, I've been debating whether or not I ought to take him to the surface to hunt, but I'm worried about revealing him to the temple.”

She shrugs her shoulders. “Could you not simply have him cling to your back and then hide him beneath the cloak, or even better, simply have him turn invisible? We also have a number of containers we might hide him in.” She cocks her head to the side, looking at your dragon contemplatively. “He is still young, I'm not sure he can fly. However, his wingspan seems wide enough. Dragons, much like lizards, seem as if the type of creature to be born as simply miniature adults, rather than needing to mature. “

You think about it for a time, but ultimately decide that taking Zahak above ground probably won't do much harm. “Alright, I'll contact everyone on the brooches and see if they'd like to come along. After all, hunting is a social activity.”
(1/3 or 4)
>>
Chrys frowns just slightly. “Hunting is a task one performs to survive from one day to the next. Hunting as a leisure activity is wasteful, and more often than not those who do hunt for pleasure are poor hunters. If we are going to teach your dragon to hunt, we ought to do it the proper way. As a young child learns to hunt for a meal.”

You don't argue, instead merely focusing on contacting everyone via the brooches. {I'm going above ground to hunt with Zahak and Chrys. Anyone else who wishes to come along is welcome to do so.} You pause, before an idea occurs to you. {Oh, and Skull Kid, Fulvia. I've got a ton of wiring, as well as some broken Rhynian junk you might want to take a look at. Might shed some insight into whatever project you're working on right now.}

Skull Kids is the first to respond. {Wait, you mean your people understand what wiring is?}

Profectus answers. {Yeah, sure. The Rhynians invented it thousands of years ago. Actually, that's disingenuous. The Elves invented it when they were under Rhynian occupation and the Rhynians claimed it as their own. I think the knowledge required to make it has faded along with the Empire. I certainly have no idea how it works beyond giant metal rollers to make really thin metal strings. I would've thought that Fulvia had shared this with you, or someone else had mentioned it.} A brief pause, and a change of focus. {Anyway, Mik. I'll tag along on the hunting trip. Doubt I'll be much good, but I may as well.}
(2/3 or 4)
>>
Mortia states that she's busy reading, while Fulvia and Skull Kid both want to focus on the junk you've got to deliver to them. However, at least Darzi also seems interested. {Sure, I'll come. I was never a particularly good hunter but I know my way around a bow and arrow. I can't be the worst hunter in the group.}

With that decided, you turn your attention to Zahak. You think that the best chance of sneaking the dragon out is to have it climb up onto your shoulders and turn itself invisible. You explain this to Chrys, and she promptly removes her hand from Zahak's snout and holds out a palm flat, stopping him as he's lunging for her neck. He looks at her confused, croaking once. You pick up a sense of disappointment from his thoughts. Chrys points to you and Zahak climbs off, wandering over your way. You urge him to climb up onto your shoulders, which he does so with some confusion.

His talons sink into your shoulders, it's a bit painful but not too bad. His wings wrap themselves around your chest and his clawed feet press into your lower back. It's quite uncomfortable, if you're being honest. Like some sort of weird pack, or fashion statement. Without a moment's notice he winks out of invisibility and you stand, as best as you're able. Chrys ends up supporting you to make sure you don't fall. The two of you carefully make your way to the door, hoping to avoid either spooking, injuring, or dislodging your dragon. You find Darzi and Profectus chatting amicably outside your door.

The four of you make swift progress, though you do attract a number of looks. Most of them unfriendly at worst, and curious at best. You get the feeling it's more due to the way Chrys clings to your arm to help you move along, than due to the invisible dragon on your back. Then again, a number of Vatis here are also quite experienced with Nature magic, they might be able to see a massive vys signature clinging to you, and wonder what it is.
(3/4)
>>
You make your way through the stairs which lead up to the baths. Briefly, you consider dipping in to wash the blood, dirt, ash, and grime off yourself. However, you've not any time. You sense curiosity from Zahak, primarily regarding the water. Come to think of it, you've shown him what water is haven't you? Does he need to drink water? Has he been drinking water? You're not really sure...

You emerge into the midday sun. If you're being honest, you're not really entirely certain what time it is, or how much time has passed, or what day it is. You haven't been outside in days, you know that much. Zahak is absolutely amazed. His thoughts are consumed by wonder and excitement and a desire to explore and see and smell. It's only your gentle coaxing which keeps him clinging to your back, and not bounding off into the great wide world.

Chrys speaks, once your eyes have adjusted. “We ought to head towards the mountains. Fewer people that way. We likely won't find much in the way of game, but I imagine for a flying beast or a Nature vatis that will be only a small problem. I must admit, I am not familiar with the animal life of this area.”

Darzi shakes her head. “No no, the deserts should be our destination. It is as you said, Chrys. You're unfamiliar with this area. The deserts will be nearly empty and in them the greatest diversity of life can be found.”

Holy shit. Guys. I just thought of something. Soma confirmed that Grandmasters would have near-molecular control of water, and we as grandmasters are aware of the tiny "pieces" water can be cut down into as shown by in-quest meditation. Does this mean that Grandmaster Nature Vatis can discover cells?

I just think this is interesting because if we can discover what kind of cells Chryssa has and the secret behind her strength that doesn't seem to need Vys, we could create our own army of supermutant autists, or even make a body similar like hers for ourselves so we aren't a weak-wristed Samjan all the time.

You stare off into the middle distance, shielding your eyes from the sun. “We must journey to where sand meets stone. Only there will we find prey worthy of the hunt.”

Your party stares at you for a time. Darzi is the one who breaks the growing silence. “What by Pani's sacred name does that mean? Are you saying you want to go to the beach? A cliff face?”

Chrys responds in her usual emotionless tone. “I believe he is talking about a point where the desert meets the mountains. Presumably this would offer the benefits of both locations.”

Darzi shakes her head. “Alright, to the foothills it is, then. I mean, as far as I recall they're only sparsely populated by villages and the occasional Bhatak tribe passing through the area. It ought to be safe enough and there's good game to be had, certainly. Don't know why you needed to dress that up all-” She waves a hand searchingly. “-pseudo-mystically.”

Profectus folds his arms in front of his chest, stepping forward to join you in staring off into the middle distance. “Do you not think that there are things which you cannot understand, and yet which are; that some people see things that others cannot? There are things old and new which must not be contemplate by men´s eyes, because they know, or think they know, some things which other men have told them. Ah, it is the fault of our science that it wants to explain all; and if it can explain not, then it says there is nothing to explain.”

Darzi sighs heavily. “I don't even know what he said. I mean, I picked up a few words here and there but it's gibberish to me.”

(1/2)
>>
Chrys clears her throat. “Something about seeing that which others do not, I believe it to be a quote from an old novel. A very, very old novel. I may be wrong. My knowledge of these things is circumstantial at best.”

You clap Profectus on the shoulder as best you're able with Zahak still clinging to your back, and then set to marching off into the desert. Chrys and Darzi follow after a fashion. You strike up amiable conversation as you journey across the landscape, picking your way through dense, dry shrubs and across rocky terrain. At several points massive piles of boulders jut from the ground, stretching skyward like a mountain laid bare. Your people have many myths regarding these protrusions, most believe them to be the corpses of Spirits piled atop one another. Once their immortality left them, they were reduced to little more than stones.

It isn't long before you find yourselves in the rolling foothills of the Northern Mountains. Seldom little lives here, though the foothills are rich in iron, copper, and other metals. You let Zahak climb off your shoulders once you were out of sight of the temple. He seemed to have trouble picking his way across the rough stone, but eventually managed it. You stopped several times to help him, and to make sure he didn't go ramming into a cactus.

You've noted with some mild curiosity that the exposure to the sun has darkened his scales, but only slightly. Where as before they were a milky white, now they are more like cream, slowly yellowing as the sun beats against their surface. You wonder, then, why most of the dragons deep beneath the surface of the earth were black, red, brown, or some variation. Especially considering they'd been underground since a time before time. Surely, they ought to be pale white and blind. Assuming, that is, that sunlight darkens their scales and not some other force.

Chrys motions for everyone to stop once you're trekking through the foothills proper. Here, there is sparse grass and the occasional tree. Unlike the sparseness of the mountains or the harshness of the deserts. Unfortunately, the ground is rather devoid of nutrients. Only the hardiest of plants may survive here without the careful attention of a Nature vatis or a skilled farmer.

You turn to Chrys. “Well, oh wise huntress? Mistress of yew and gut? Where shall the hunt lead us, what beast shall we fell? Will the gods tell, or will you?”

Chrys glances down at Zahak, and then looks to you. “Will I be teaching the dragon alone, or would others like to learn as well? This detail is important, as hunting within a group and hunting by oneself are quite dissimilar.”

Darzi narrows her eyes at you. “Are you going to do this the whole time? I can tell you right now, that's going to get old quick.” She turns her attention to Chrys. “Anyway, I'd like to better learn to take the lay of the land and stalk prey. Useful skills to have most anywhere. “

You nod. “I too would be interested in the secrets of delivering death to sustain life. For within this exchange lies the overarching hierarchy of the universe, the circle of life!”

Profectus merely sighs heartily. “Here I thought we might partake in that oldest of civilizations gift's; to slake our thirst whilst she awakened the drake. I solemnly forsake these sacred whims, at your behest.”

Man, Profectus is really stepping up his game. You're going to need to put more into your pseudo-mystical bullshit if you want to out-do him. Chrys doesn't even seem phased by either of your rambling, she simply nods. “Four pupils, then. More than typical, but I ought to manage. First, it is important that everyone arm themselves. Preferably with spear or some other longarm. Swords, axes, and the like are ill-suited for hunting.”

She extracts her own bow from a leather sheath beneath her robes, quickly unfolding the two arms and bringing it to the ready. She withdraws an arrow from an unseen quiver strapped to her back. You wonder absentmindedly if she always walks around armed.

Darzi performs a similar feat, withdrawing a rod of metal perhaps a foot long from a pocket sewn into the sleeves of her robes. She whips it forward and the rod extends, turning into the haft of a wicked looking spear. It looks more suitable for slashing than stabbing attacks, the head more of a broad blade than a point. The material is likewise strange, not of any sort that you've seen in the past. Not even of Elaudian Steel. Rather, it almost appears as though some sort of carved gemstone. There are, of course, intricate runes carved all across the weapon.

You extract your spear from your cloak, twirling it once, if only to show off. It's not enchanted, but your magic more than makes up for it. Were you wearing your armor, it too would more than make up for your lack of a proper enchanted weapon.

Profectus looks to each of you, sighing. “Gods be cruel indeed, a man brings his fist to a melee.”

Chrys waves him off. “We'll find you something. Anyway, this is my plan. We'll have the dragon take to the air to scout our surroundings. We'll follow beneath it, and when it dives to attack something we'll come in to either assist, finish it off, or to make sure it doesn't scorch the kill black. It will be similar to falconing, except far more impressive.

>Give Profectus a weapon, though sadly you've got no more that would be appropriate for hunting.
>Meh, he's got his magic. It will be good practice!
>Profectus can sit this one out afterall, if he'd like.
>Write-in

>Agree with Chrys' plan.
>Propose an alternative (Write-in)

I think I'll call the session here. My will is flagging and I'm not sure I've got enough in me for a second thread. Tomorrow, at the usual time. I haven't actually gotten a call to tell me class is canceled... but I remain hopeful. If class is canceled, I'll run early. Hopefully.
