Stage 45: The only things worse than information is not having it.

You wake up slowly, mostly because you're very warm. Not uncomfortably so, but it's the kind of warmth that radiates from you to be trapped inside the blankets and makes you even warmer. Yui is lying on a small mat next to your futon, eating shrimp flavored rice chips and reading a book, of which there are several in the pile next to her. There is also a tea service and the scent of the tea makes your mouth water.

Kiki-hime seems to have left, but Er Yin-sensei is sitting in a half-lotus position at the left side of the futon, her unseeing eyes staring at the wall across from her. Her hands are cupped below her breasts and her thumbs and little fingers are pressed together while the rest of her fingers are curled together – a mudra, one of the Buddhist hand-positions they use for their prayers and rituals. Your mouth goes dry just as quickly as it went wet, as you gaze at the cheongsam garbed seer. Her tail shifts slowly as you gaze at her and she places her hands on her legs. “Good morning, Ryukusa-sama.” The intense warmth fades to a more normal, gentle warmth, which is nice, but not nearly so sleep-inducing.

Yui glances at you then pushes herself up and hops to her feet. “I'll let Kiki-hime know you're up, aniki!”

[] Hold that thought Yui-niji-chan. I need some time with Er Yin.
[] Okay, niji-chan. Thanks.
[] How is she taking all this, first, Yui-chan.
[] Actually I have a job for you....
[] Thank you niji-chan. And thank you for letting Kiki-hime know too.

[X] How is she taking all this, first, Yui-chan.
[] Actually I have a job for you....
[X] Thank you niji-chan. And thank you for letting Kiki-hime know too.

You smiles and and start to sit up but are stopped by the massive weight of Er yin-sensei's tail being laid across your upper chest gently. You could ignore it, but you'd rather stay warm anyways, at the moment. “Before you go, Yui-chan, how is she taking all this?”

It's one thing to be told that you're good, and another to see it demonstrated, but it's quite another thing to actually see someone get possessed and then breeze through a bunch of people you presumed were competent. The idea that you are just that skilled even half out of your mind would shakes anyone's confidence, you suspect.

“She's helping make breakfast right now aniki, and Jinyuu-sensei made her sleep in her own bed after she woke up last night.” Yui doesn't seem to quite get what you're asking. “She's a big girl, stop worrying so much!”

Okay, maybe she does....

“Arigatou gozimasu, Yui-niji-chan....and thank you for letting her know, too.” Yui blushes deeply and looks shy, her grin huge. At your node, she quickly slips out of the room.

Er Yin's tail slides off of you lightly, the tip gently brushing your cheek. You turn your attention to her, and she smiles, though she doesn't bother 'looking' at you. “You need not concern yourself with my well being. I must admit that I have never seen a warrior of your skills, Ryukusa-sama, and I would be frightened to be considered your enemy. That form of possession is one which interferes with combat training....yet you coped quite easily.”
>>
>>36224860
You smile faintly. “I was trying not to hurt any of you. I failed in your case, Er Yin-sensei, and you must accept my apologies.”

The flicker of shock on Er Yin's face is rather rewarding, despite the fact you hurt her. “If that is you being both impaired and cautious, then my Hougyoku-chan in good hands indeed.”

[] Can you tell me anything of our near future now, Er Yin-sensei?
[] I am only too pleased to be allowed to protect your precious gem, Er yin-sensei.
[] Aren't Water dragonettes in China like that too?
[] It worries me that you're not upset, you know.
[] Well, any time I can get my hands on Kiku-chan is the best time.

[X] Well, any time I can get my hands on Kiku-chan is the best time.

“Being allowed to protect your Precious Person is my privilege, Er Yin-sensei, though she is very capable on her own you know.” You sigh and carefully slide your left hand over your body to check on your right arm but Er Yin's tail once again covers your arm and belly. With a sigh you reluctantly settle down. “Aren't Water dragonettes in China like that?”

“All dragonnes and dragonettes in China are warriors, yes, but not to the extent you are. Water dragonettes in my home are more creatures of Water than Water and wind, and they are very rigidly instructed and controlled by the Celestial Bureaucracy than those here. Here, there is a greater freedom given to you, but there are many more kami and youkai to be wary of as well. They are less dangerous than yours are in their power but their magic is more pervasive, more subtle and more powerful.” It's an interesting bit of information, one that may come in useful later. “I hesitate to claim that you are typical of your kind, Ryukusa-sama.”
>>
>>36225346
You laugh softly. “You're not the first to claim that, Er Yin-sensei! Besides, I like handling your pretty treasure.” She turns her head to laugh as the door swings open and slides shut, and almost instantly Kiki-hime is at your right side, looking down at you with worry.

“Ryu-chan....I was so worried about you!” She places both hands on the futon and clutches the covers hard. You lift your right arm very slowly, but Er yin doesn't seem to have a problem with you using it to stroke the fuchsia silk of your wife's hair from her face. “Onee-chan says that you are all right now, but she wants you to stay in bed for one day more to be sure....” Her sky-blue eyes are glistening and soft and presses your hand to her cheek with almost exaggerated care.

[] I'm fine, Kiki-hime, you needn't worry about me.
[] ….to be sure of what, Kiki-hime?
[] Priestess orders, huh? Well, if it's Kiku-chan....
[] It was a very intense battle, but they're not going to bother us again.

You don't particularly like the sound of that. “I picked up on something worrying you all when I noticed someone with me constantly and alert, so that isn't a surprise, but what is it exactly that she's worried about, Kiki-hime?” She blushes a little, and takes your hand in both of hers, holding it gently in her barely covered lap. She seems to have taken a liking to short robes since the first time you put her in one....

“It is a difficult thing to hide things from your husband, Kiki-san,” Er Yin murmurs, smiling.

Strangely, Er Yin's words seems to calm Kiki-hime down some. She nods. “Ryukusa-chan has always been like that, even when we were in school. She was never attentive in classes, yet knew what was going on all the time.”

“Hey, I paid attention in class! I just didn't care.”

“That's why your grades were always awful....” She smiles and draws your hair from your face lightly, her other hand gently holding yours. “My sister is worried that whatever the oni did that possessed you might have affected your left arm more strongly, but she can't tell because your left arm is too powerful for her.” THAT gets your attention.

“You lost me, Kiki-hime.”

Er Yin is the one who explains. “The magics that bound your sapphire arm to your body are the magics of Yui and Ame-no-Horobi-no-Mikado, Ryukusa-sama. None of us can see through all the repercussions or magics that are part of it.” Her expression becomes serious, thoughtful. “It is possible that even without one of the Great Treasures, you still can surpass all who oppose you now. But the same power that makes such a thing possible, means that it cannot be read by mere sorcerers or simple priestesses.”

You glance at Kiki-hime, but she doesn't seem offended by the comment at all and merely smiles down at you, relieved. “Yui-chan says that it looks funny to her,” Kiki-hime adds. You recall her saying something similar about your painting.

“Yui-niji-chan doesn't see things the way we do, I think, in a lot of ways.” You smile brightly, setting the concerns aside. “Besides, if it's Kiku-chan, it can't be helped, can it?”

Kiki-hime shakes her head, still smiling. “Never.” She kisses your hand again softly, and rises. “I will get some food for you, Ryu-chan. Would you like something, Er Yin-sensei?”

“No, thank you, Kiki-san.” Your wife bows, and walks away, politely ignoring Er Yin's blindness. You hear the door slide open and swing shut.

[] Er Yin....you made prophecies earlier – did they change yet?

[X] Er Yin....you made prophecies earlier – did they change yet?
[X] How much trouble will you have with the Great Kami and Great Dragons here, Er Yin?
[X] You said simple priestesses and mere sorceresses....who then?

“Er Yin-sensei, it was Akari's magics that bound the arm to me, I thought.” You recall very well the experience of making love to Akari as you Split your Pearl with her.

“It was Akari who gave you your arm back, it is true, but it was Yui who gave you the power to become all that you are now. Her mysteries and secrets of the Void are what has made all that you are whole and complete....which also means it is that much harder to see the truth of the relic that is your sapphire arm.” It's magic, is basically what she's saying, which is both true and annoyingly vague. “That same power allows you to change the fortunes that are before you with greater ease than most, even if you are not truly a demigod, as long as they have the chance to happen”

That particular fact has a lot of potential, actually. “If I try and sit up, you're going to make me lie down again, aren't you?” You get a half smile and a solemn nod from Er Yin. “....fine....what kinds of terms are you on with the Great Kami and Dragons of Japan?” Your Water eyes showed you – kami, it was two weeks ago – that she was ostracized and disregarded by almost all her own kind and her own deities, and so she came to Japan and separated herself further from them.

“I practice Koshinto exclusively Ryukusa-sama. Your Great Kami and Great Dragons will respect that, at the very least, even if I am Chinese. Why do you ask?”

“Because sooner or later they will be meeting you, because you'll be with me. I like to prevent trouble....” The door opens and Akari steps into the room looking serious. “....right when it happens, naturally.” You start to stand and Er Yin tries to stop you with her tail, but you quickly slip out of the futon and into a crouch. Akari closes the door behind her,, and you stand up, perfectly steady. Your left arm looks fine, and the light robe you are wearing pools around your feet. “So, who CAN tell me about my left arm, Er Yin-sensei.”

Despite being upset that you slipped her grasp, she stands up slowly and answers your question. “Jinyuu-sama may be able to divine more than myself or my treasure....and Hinata-hakase will of course be able to....but those who watch over the Ninigi would also be able to speak of it.” the Three Great Treasures caretakers, of course. It would make sense they would understand such things.

Akari waits patiently, holding out her arms as you take various pieces of clothing and drape them on her arms. “And the prophecies you made? Which have changed?”

“They have all come true or been prevented. Only one was harmed by the Grass-Cutting blade....” Yourself of course. “The half-demon acted before we thought he might....” Too true, you suspect that he's going to move his plans ahead. “....and you no longer need the Great Treasure, though you could still bring one to this family.” Amaterasu-Omikami said you could gain one from your father, and that you really didn't need to.
>>
>>36226621
“Who is it, Akari-niji-chan?” You sigh and look at your right arm, stitched from shoulder to wrist.

“She claims to be Kurou Kyota, here to speak on behalf of Clan Kurao.” Her voice is soft and calm.

“....Kurou?” She nods slowly. “I....see.” You look at the clothing you have laid out. Now what could you possibly wear to a meeting in your living room with the daughter of the Dragon God of all Rain, Kuroukami himself?

“Er Yin-sensei, sorry, but I need you to come hold these for me.” She walks around the bed easily, and stop a few feet from you. She holds out both arms, even though what you are asking of her is pretty rude. But without much furniture and being injured, you need to keep these things off the floor. Akari, on the other hand, understand the situation all too well.

It doesn't take long, but you put together an ensemble that has Akari's eyes wide....and a soft blush on her cheeks. You now have a better understanding of why she is blushing and her blouse is peaked in two places; in fact, you are probably directly responsible for her cosplay fetish. And as you look down at yourself, you can understand why.

A full kimono is not easy to put together in a short amount of time, and you're being very careful with this set. The deep black silk with the midnight blue swirl of dragonflies and waves at the ends of the skirts, the silver obi backed by barely pink-tinged padding, and the carefully arranged sleeves with their silver lightning tracery at the very edges are lovely. Pink tinted under-robes with sakura leaves provide a nice contrast, while silver dragon pins with ruby-and-gold eyes hold up your knotted and bound hair. For Akari, of course, you put on large jade hoop earrings. You take a deep breath, and tuck the sleeves back a little, exposing your sapphire claws.

“Do you think it's been long enough to make her sweat, Akari-niji-chan?”

Akari looks at you with a faint smile. Er Yin sighs softly. “It has only been two minutes, Ryukusa-sama.”

“....gomen.”

You step out into the living room, Akari-niji-chan at your left and behind you, closely followed by Er Yin-sensei who is walking directly behind you with her hand on Akari's shoulder. The sight that greets you isn't especially surprising, but it is very tense. The table is set for six – Kiku-chan, Er Yin, Yui, and Akari, Shoko, and Yuuhi at a guess – and since you and Kiki-hime are here, it doesn't look unusual. Jinyuu-onee-sama is standing off to the side, and is bowing deeply, while Kiku-chan is rising from her own bow, her hands placed together in front of her chest....and eyes wide open, unlike your sister. Yui is behind Kiki-hime, who is standing at the entrance of the kitchen and looking very angry. Shoko and Yuuhi aren't present at the moment.

Kurou Kyota is a slender, delicate seeming dragonette with long, straight, pearl colored horns. Her clothing appears to be a very stylized form of miko ceremonial robes, but she is carrying a katana and a large pouch tied to the rope belts. It looks like a large orb of some sort. Her hair is a soft powder blue, and her sharp eyes are a sunset orange color. It is interesting that she is wearing a shimenawa rope; it indicates her status as a sacred person, which is why your sister and Kiku – and now Er Yin who is bowing politely in her direction – are being so cautious. Kiki-hime doesn't know any better, but you and Akari do, and it is at this point you need to decide how you are going to approach her....maybe you should have added the wakizashi.

[] Have Akari bring Shoko and Yuuhi out as you greet Kyota-sama properly.

[X] Have Akari bring Shoko and Yuuhi out as you greet Kyota-sama properly.
[X] Approach, bow politely, and introduce yourself.
[X] Walk over to Kiki-hime, greet your wife properly, and take Yui in hand.

You gesture quickly and carefully to Akari, who responds by not responding, as you approach the pretty and somewhat imperious looking dragonette standing just inside the door. Akari leads Er Yin to Kiku-chan, and you know from experience that she's letting Kiku know what you're planning. You step up and are somewhat surprised to see she stands several inches lower than you. Her blocky geta were probably to make up for her lack of stature.

“Greetings, Kurou Kyota. I am Ryuu Ryukusa, of Clan Ryo, and I welcome you to my home.” You bow low, careful not to disturb your own sense of balance or cause yourself any other issues. When you stand back up, her expression has changes slightly – no less imperious, but touched by relief. She does seem very impressed by your look, and you can feel a large number of eyes on you as well. It is the lack of a response from Yui that has you most concerned though.

You gesture to the love seat across from the couch. “Please sit, Kyota-sama.” As you draw your arm back, you make several signs to Kiku-chan and she nods imperceptibly to most people. Walking over to your wife, you speak very softly. “Please serve tea. I'll take care of everything else. Yui, you are at my right, Akari will be at my left.” Her glowing eyes brighten, and the fear in her expression is quickly replaced with a steadfast determination as she steps from around Kiki-hime, who looks at you with wonder....and not a little bit of desire.

“Perhaps when we are formally married, you will wear something like this, Ryu-chan?” she asks softly, and you take her hands in yours, ignoring the painful twinge in your left arm and the stretching of the stitches in your right. “Maybe exactly this,” she says before you kiss her softly.

When you turn back to Kurou Kyota, she is looking at you speculatively. Er Yin and Kiku-chan sit before the door together, Er Yin's hand on Kiku-chan's right shoulder, further suggesting a non-existent weakness. Akari walks out of the other bedroom, with Yuuhi, Shoko, and your older sister in tow. Then each walk to the dining room and bow politely, and the look of shock in Kyota-sama's expression is gratifying as she clearly recognizes Shoko-san and Yuuhi-chan. Yes, Yuuhi-chan because she's too fuckin' cute for anything else. They walk around to the back of the couch, as Akari sits on the left side of the couch, you move to the middle, and Yui sits stiffly on the right side. Your sister sits to the left of your gest, in the seat that faces diagonally, after bowing politely and greeting the dragonette just as formally as you did.

The look of confusion on Kyota-sama's face when you sit on the FLOOR between your niji-chan's is absolutely priceless.

[X] Ask her what kind of tea she might like to start....
[X] “So what can a simple Water dragonette do for one of Kuroukami's daughters?”

“May I ask, Kurou Kyota, what kind of tea you prefer? My wife is preparing for us, and we have a wide selection.” You reach back with your right hand, and you feel Yui's hand slip into yours. She's tense, so very tense, but your touch allows her to relax a little. Akari's expression feels placid and her body is utterly relaxed. Her eyes are downcast, and that indicates she's in her second most dangerous state of readiness. Everyone else is varying degrees of relaxed or tense – Yuuhi is surprisingly ready for a fight despite her calm demeanor, which you are both impressed by and confused by.

“Oolong tea, if it is available, please, Ryuu-sama.” She bows from the waist a little, apparently having expected an entirely different sort of welcome. “Please excuse me for intruding upon you with no warning.” She hesitates and you study the other Water dragonette with Water eyes.

This is a very old dragonette, probably close to four hundred years of age. She's a very powerful woman, and is used to quite a bit of deference, though she is not a kami yet. Her life has been dedicated to the service of her father as a holy emissary, someone to intercede with Shinto priest and priestesses when they call upon him and he cannot act in person. The sword is not entirely for show, it is more a symbol of her status and a tool, much as a tamagushi would be for a miko. Her confusion mostly stems from the fact that you haven't simply made good on the very straightforward threat that was delivered by the ghost of Kurao Fundo. The bag at her side and it's contents are not comfortable for her to carry, meaning it is not a normal part of her attire.

You blink your Water eyes away, and smile faintly. If she's not going to bring Water dragonette conversation into this, you won't start it. “So what may this simple Water dragonette do for you, Daughter of Kuroukami? I was not expecting such a visit at all.”

She looks at your family, at your subordinates, and finally at Yui, who's fingers tighten about yours slightly. Then she looks at you directly. “My father is concerned, Ryuu-sama....”

[] “Ryukusa is fine.” Perhaps Water dragonette diplomacy might be a good idea.
[] “I see. Does he have reason to be concerned?”

[XXX] “May I ask why I would cause concern for a Great Dragon?”
[XX] “I see. Does he have reason to be concerned?”
[X] “You understand that it is not Kuroukami that concerns me?”

You let the words hang in the air for the space of about five heartbeats. Five of Akari's heartbeats, that is, which is somewhere around ten seconds. “Well, I can certainly understand that the Dragon Who Breathes Rain and Snow would be very busy, so you will excuse my confusion at being the object of concern for such a personage.” Jinyuu-onee-sama is looking at you strangely; she's never seen you like this. Kiki-hime had the same reaction, so it's understandable. “Perhaps you might explain for me....does Kuroukami have reason to be concerned with my activities? I can only think of one very specific instance in which I might have caused trouble for that august personage.”

Kyota-sama is working very hard to conceal her own concern – she's not sure if you're subtly insulting her or being very cautious in your phrasing. For a Water dragon she's unusually easy to push off balance. “There is another who has taken up the duty you caused to be disrupted, so there is no issue with that.” Which is not the same as having an issue with stealing Yui from him. Kiki-hime serves tea, starting with Kyota-sama, then to the others. You note that she doesn't serve Yui and Akari, which is to be expected, but it is of interest that Yuuhi and Shoko both refuse the tea – acting like they are retainers or your samurai.

Once that is done, she serves you, and then herself, as she kneels seiza next to you, placing herself close to Yui, who looks at her with surprise and gratitude. That look does not escape Kyota's notice.
>>
>>36229390
“Then, if it is not the rain which I stole from the garden of his eight-times-great-granddaughter, may I ask why he finds himself concerned with me?” Your sapphire eyes narrow slightly and that increases her tension, though you notice she doesn't physically react, even though her expression betrays her feelings.

Picking up her teacup she cradles it carefully, considering. She sips slowly, and then closes her eyes, enjoying the tea....and worrying. It's disturbing to see these things in her, because a Water dragonette shouldn't be so easily read. Perhaps it is because she's been dealing with humans and oni for too long. Looking at you, she sighs softly. “It seems that Clan Kurao has caused you trouble, Ryuu-sama, and my father is worried that proper restitution might be impossible.”

“Then Kuraokami understands that it is not he that I am concerned by.” You sip your tea and the quiet in the room is overwhelming. Yui's hand slips from yours and rests lightly on Kiki-hime's shoulder, which is kind of a relief because your arm is starting to ache quite badly, though it is unimportant at the moment as far as you're concerned. “The question I have to ask is restitution on whose part, Kurou-sama. You see, while one might make an argument that Clan Kurao could expect some kind of restitution, that would be a mistake, and I would wish to correct it at once.”
>>
>>36229407
Kyota looks startled and sets the teacup down. “No, Ryuu-sama! My father wishes to make restitution on behalf of Clan Kurao to you, as assurance that there will be no further trouble for anyone in your family, including Ryuu Yui.” The tension definitely decreases, though Yui seems very surprised by this turn of events. You don't even have to glance at Kiku-chan to get a sign of 'truthful' from her.

[] Politely point out that there are several religious people here as witnesses.
[] “I am not interested in restitution....”
[] “Why, exactly, would he do this?”
[] Consult Yui – does she require restitution from Clan Kurao?
[] “And if I accept it? What then?”

[X] Consult Yui – does she require restitution from Clan Kurao?
[x] Politely point out that there are several religious people here as witnesses.

“Yui-niji-chan.” That gets you a weird look from Kyota-sama, but you ignore her.

“H....hai, aniki?” She's not just surprised at being spoken to, but surprised that you're ignoring Kurou Kyota as you do it, as you turn to actually ~look~ at your tomboy oni-chick.

“Do you want anything from them?” Though you keep your voice soft and gentle, you can feel the adrenaline and racing of your cloud-rider's heart increase tenfold.

She shakes her head. “No, aniki, I don't need anything from them.”

“Aniki.” You turn to Akari, who is now looking at Kurou Kyota with a flat, unhappy expression. She crosses her arms slowly and is controlling her breathing very carefully. Her eyes are glassy, almost dead looking, and her horns and the scales you can see have a dull shine to them. The last time you saw her like this she was about to kill someone.

“Yes, Akari-niji-chan?” Kurou Kyota isn't distracted by that strange title at all – all her attention is on Akari, and she's being very careful not to move at all. She's apparently got some brains after all.

“I want a formal apology from Clan Kurao.” Well, the tension in the room just spiked, and not just on the couch. Yui is staring at Akari like she's gone mad, and Kiki-hime looks floored. Kiku-chan makes a small 'tch' noise, and Er Yin is smiling faintly. Jinyuu-onee-sama, is looking fairly alarmed, and you don't particularly blame her. As far as you're concerned anyone in the room who isn't terrified is just stupid.

[] “Care to explain, niji-chan?”
[] “That's a little vague, darling.”
[] “Would a formal apology from Kuroukami's representative be acceptable?”
[] Consider it for a few minutes, let Kyota sweat.
[] See what Kyota thinks about that.

[X] “Care to explain, niji-chan?”
[X] “That's a little vague, darling.”
[X] Consider it for a few minutes, let Kyota sweat.

You study Akari for a moment, your understanding of your best friend serving far better than Water eyes could possibly manage here. While you're bound by a measure of politics and kami-stuff, in this case Akari is capable of asking for something you wouldn't normally be able to. You making that demand would be insulting the efforts of Kuroukami to placate you. Akari, on the other hand, isn't the one that is being placated. And because she's not Yui, she wouldn't normally have the right to do so either....except she is your retainer, able to make suggestions to you. Even if she phrased it impolitely.

“That's a touch vague, Akari-niji-chan, especially since that would require the entire clan present....ah.” You look down, and cradle your chin thoughtfully on your hand, the other folded underneath. Kiku-chan suddenly goes white as a sheet – and she's already pale – as she realizes what the implication is. Jinyuu-onee-sama blanches as well and sets her tea down, looking pale as death. Which is basically what Akari suggested since you have made a point of informing your loved ones that people who see your true form are not to be allowed to live.

Kyota-sama is watching Akari carefully, and Akari is simply staring at her.

By the time you look at Akari it's been almost three minutes and Kyota is more than just nervous, she's seriously alarmed. “Why do you think that would be appropriate, Akari-niji-chan?” You sound very curious, which you really aren't since you can guess at why. Well, besides that you might have to kill the lot of them. Which isn't a bad idea in general, but might annoy the kami.

“They entered your home and attempted to assassinate you in an effort to take my wife from me, and did so in a manner that shows them to be honorless, disgusting eta that have no place in any heaven. They tried to kidnap your servant after agreeing to a duel with you before the duel was scheduled and while you were injured and already weakened from fighting, and in doing so spiritually wrecked almost an entire prefecture and forced their own god to sacrifice himself to protect me.” Kyota looks positively horrified at that.

Akari's voice is flat, unfriendly, and without inflection, just as dead as her eyes appear to be. “You have dealt with youkai with more honor and righteousness than the oni of Clan Kurou. At the very least they should make it clear that they understand the severity of their crime against you.” Your best friend's breathing is speeding up and her hands are tightly clenched under her arms. “An apology from them is the very least of what is deserved.”

You list a hand and point at Horobi's castellan without looking at her, keeping your eyes on Kyota, feeling the oni-child's heated outburst starting before it actually erupts. “No, Shoko-san. This doesn't concern you.” You hear her teeth grind and you can feel the anger radiating off of her. Yuuhi quietly steps over and speaks to her in Ainu, though she doesn't sound any happier about it.

Your family is looking at Akari as though she's sprouted a second head, and your sister has calmed herself and has placed her hands in her sleeves, ready to try and prevent Akari from killing Kyota. You shrugs mildly to Kyota. “As you can see, while Yui-niji-chan has no issues with her previous clan, there have been some rather irregular actions on the part of Clan Kurao that should possibly be addressed.” You pick up your teacup and take a sip.

Kiki-hime asks very softly, “But what about the way they treated Yui-chan, Ryukusa-dono?”

[X] Tact and self control, Ryukusa, tact and self control....ah, fuck it, let's tell her!

“To be honest, Kiki-hime, that is Ryuu Yui's concern, and not truly ours because it would be inappropriate for me to bring that up without her permission.” She blushes slightly, and looks down, but you slide your tail around her legs and stroke her back lightly with your fins. “Unless Kurou-sama has anything to say on the matter?” You sip your tea, carefully controlling the raw, burning anger that the through to Yui in their hands brings to mind.

Kurou Kyota hesitates, and then speaks softly. “I am afraid I am uncertain of exactly what you mean by the inappropriateness of bringing it up – you seem to value the opinions of your....your subordinates a great deal, and I would rather you speak plainly with me. I understand that there has been a great wrong against you, but I do not understand why you would not speak for Ryuu Yui's defense when your other subordinate would speak in yours when you do not....”

Even before she moves, you grab Akari's calf and squeeze hard enough to draw blood. She is trembling, so faintly that you only know it is there by touch. Kiku's hair has exploded and she has her sleeve over her mouth as she stares wide eyed at Akari. Jinyuu-onee-sama has actually taken a seal out of her sleeve and is holding it. Kyota-sama looks confused and looks between Jinyuu and Kiku, completely unaware you just saved her life.

Dead silence reigns as you look at Kyota.

so... I take it that the whole "killing the oni kami in a dishonorable ambush" thing would make clan Kurao remarkably unpopular amongst their fellow oni clans?
>>
>>36231182
So, Kyota wasn't told anything about the situation by Kuroukami except "My other employees have fucked up big time by insulting someone favored by Amaterasu; go and apologize, and make sure they know they'll get reparations from me because they're a heavy hitter"?
Is that why she's so confused?

Not really. Actual oni tend to be disinterested in matters of honor and less than concerned about the doings of gods. If anything they would find it a fascinating drinking tale.

Now, kami, on the other hand, would be more than a little upset.

>you grab Akari's calf and squeeze hard enough to draw blood

More that she was told, "this is a possible gift to be used for reparations, if they want it, and reassure them I'll keep the clan from bugging them anymore."

Typically no one can sense Water eyes, so not using it is an indicator of self-relaiance rather than being polite. Ryukuza isn't sure why she can sense people using those abilities on her - it first happened after she defeated Hidesato and Kushinada, after she left Hinata-hakase's temple. She notice Kiku-chan using Fire eyes while she was on lookout.

She doesn't mention it to people because it's not supposed to be possible at all.

For Water dragonettes specifically, it's incredibly insulting to have someone suggest you need to use Water Eyes because it implies you're not clever enough to have thought of it yourself in the first place, combined with the suggestion you're not smart enough to understand what's going on without them. The other Eyes are less of an insult to suggest because they have more mystical powers attached.

Understand that Kyota is just a little out of her depth here - she's used to dealing with deferential priests and priestesses, and with other kami; Yakuza thugs who are trained to deal in death, mayhem, subterfuge, and destruction art not in her pay grade.

Honestly, a lot of it is true to Japanese mythology and Chinese mythology, outside of spirit-children and the genderswapping. I've confused/mispelled a few names here and there, and taken a few liberties with how some of the kamuy act, but by and large the Koshinto, Shinto, about 70% of the 5-element theory, and I Ching uses are pretty accurate.

I was a strange child.

Well, it makes for an amazing quest, so thanks for being strange.

An awesome one.

How big of an issue was it that he was killed? He didn't seem to think death was a big deal.
I basically assumed that whatever form he was in made dying less of an issue in return for not being able to use his full abilities.

Unlike many kamuy Nikne Kamuy has a very strong worship base in the form of oni, because there are no Shinto kami who rule over oni - there are oni who are gods, and kami who are oni, but no kami whose provenence is specifically oni. that makes him very vital in comparison to most kamuy, and since he is largely a creature of spirit to begin with, 'dying' is not a great inconvenience - he merely goes to Yomi for a specific amount of time and then inhabits a new mask (much like immortals and enlightened beings of China who spend a certain amount of time in Hell before reincarnating).

That doesn't make it any less of a faux pas to kill him though.

Honestly, at this point I wonder how much Kuorokami himself understands about this situation. Obviously he realizes something about who Ryukusa is, or he wouldn't have sent his daughter to very quickly reach an agreement. However, does he know the full reason she's upset or just that his servants decided to be dishonorable morons.

Incidentally, oni are usually classified as a form of youkai in Shinto.

>Obviously he realizes something about who Ryukusa is, or he wouldn't have sent his daughter to very quickly reach an agreement.
this isn't necesasarily true. It could be as simple as "Holy shit, this chick just killed my majordomo in single combat! Kyota, get your ass down there and let them know no one's going to fuck with them on my say so before someone else gets their ass killed!"

Thanks for running, XS. May I ask how the Celestial Bureaucracy is viewed by most spirits and how corrupt in general it is known to be?
>>
>>36232192
True. It would certainly make his reaction when Kyota tells him about Yuuhi and Shoko hilarious to witness.

If you mean the one in Japan, it's not so much corrupt as it is very insular between ministries. Each section does their own thing without much regard for what else is going on because that's their job. As a result, it's less corruption than the right hand doesn't know what the left hand is doing because the right foot is treading lightly while the left foot is cleaning up after the tail's mess because the ear let it know that some goof-of dropped the ball due to the right eye looking at the right hand's work and judging it only semi-competent. The Greater Kami try and keep things from getting too bad - in this universe, spirit children and demigods are how they get shit done when they need it done.

If you mean Chinese, it's VERY well organized and not very corrupt, largely because the Jade Emperor ( MHR10000x10000 Years) knows everything (literally, he's truly omniscient) even if he seems not to do much. Not that it doesn't have it's problems, given that the ruler of Hell wants to destroy the entirety of Heaven and is really damn good at his job of trying to do so.

With that, have a good night all.

Night, XS. Sounds like Ryukuza is going to enjoy 'helping out'.
