Welcome to Banished Quest!
You take the role of a young mage labeled a criminal by his people and cast out into the wider world. In the last thread you sorted your inventory and tried to teach your dragon to talk, before taking said dragon on a hunting trip.

You hold up a finger, indicating pause, while you scan the ground for a suitably large stone. Eventually you find a patch of rocky soil and with a wave of your hand the dirt parts to reveal solid stone a short distance below. Carefully, you carve out a rectangular chunk of stone about as long as you are tall. From there it's as simply as eroding away the stone to form a haft, guard, and sharpened tip. It won't be the sturdiest of weapons, and the blade will likely chip off the moment it's used, but it ought to suffice.
>Vys Pool: (28/38)

You return to the group, handing the spear to Profectus. “An earthen spear will spill the blood of the living today, my friend.”

Profectus takes the weapon with an elaborate, flourishing bow. “My thanks, Mystic of the Southern Deserts.” He attempts to twirl the weapon, promptly dropping it in the attempt. Fortunately he doesn't break it. You'd hate to need to make another one.

Darzi shakes her head disparagingly. “Gods above, you two are as bad as apprentices.” She holds out her hands, sighing. “Actually, let me qualify that. I guess that's fair for Profectus. He IS your apprentice. You on the other hand, Mikhael, ought to have grown out of this sort of behavior by now.”

You thumb your nose at her teasingly, pulling a face. She swats at you, but you simply duck to avoid her. You don't think she was actually trying to hit you. “Lament no further, False Matron. I've no need for your misguided lectures.”

Before she can retort, Chrys interrupts. “If you are quite done making fools of yourselves I believe we've a dragon to teach. Now then, Mikhael. It seems to listen to you. I want you to coax it into the air, urge it to take flight. I'm unaware as to the extent of its capabilities, so if we find that it's unable to fly we must instead teach it to stalk across the ground undetected.”

You move to obey, she is running this show after all. You crouch down next to Zahak and urge him to spread his wings wide, picturing an image of him soaring high above the foothills in your mind's eye. He doesn't quite seem to get it, though he does spread his wings halfheartedly. He doesn't quite seem to know what to do with them.

You picture him flapping his wings, and he tries it once. He manages to do little save kick up dirt and debris. You spread your arms out wide and flap them up and down. Your dragon mimics you, but still can't seem to get off the ground. He does manage to push himself backwards, but he doesn't quite seem sure how to get upwardly mobile.

Eventually Chrys clears her throat to get your attention, after several more failed attempts at teaching your dragon to fly. “Try running forward, with your dragon following behind you. Flap your arms the whole time. Perhaps, if it had a running start, it might be able to get off the ground.”

You try it, running forward with your back bent and flapping your arms frantically. You reach the bottom of the hill you stand upon and turn back to look at your party. Zahak sits on the ground, his wings folded and head cocked to one side. He looks confused, more than anything. Profectus laughs unabashedly, head thrown back. Darzi at least conceals her grin. Chrys, of course, is an emotionless mask is always.

With a sigh you climb the hill again, shooting Profectus a glare. This time you get Zahak to follow you, but he still can't manage to get off the ground. He does manage to catch air for a little bit, but crashed back to the Earth a moment later. Progress, but not much. You end up spending most of the afternoon trying to work through the problem, but just can't quite seem to manage it.

As you're getting ready to give up, an idea occurs to you. What if Zahak simply jumped before he began flapping his wings? You know for a fact he's got powerful legs, based on the way he pounced upon that goat you fed him. This in mind you trek across the foothills in search of a taller hill, eventually finding one that dominates the surrounding landscape. You and your party scale the hill with some moderate difficulty and, once at the top, and crouch down next to Zahak.

You spend a long time trying to mentally explain to him, via concepts, images, emotions, and what few words you think he might, maybe understand that you want him to run forward, jump, and then flap his wings as hard as he can once he's in the air. You'll be doing it with him, so if he needs to he can just mimic Papa. Once you're confident that he's more-or-less understood what you're asking, you step a few feet away, assume a sprinter's pose, and then dash forward.

Zahak lumbers forward on the tips of his wings as best as he can, really it's more like he's leaping forward and only using his wingtips to help him swing his legs forward, so that he can kick against the earth and push himself further. It's a strange gait, but he's able to more-or-less keep up with you. As you near the cusp up the hill, the steep drop at which point it falls into a steep slope you leap forward with all your might, flapping your arms in the air like a bird trying to take flight.

Zahak shoots past you, his legs apparently much more suitable for pouncing than your own. He flaps his wings, and as you begin to plummet through the air you see Zahak begin to gain height, after initially dropping like a stone. You hit the ground at an awkward angle and tuck yourself as best you can into a ball, rolling down the hill and getting a variety of knicks, bruises, scrapes, and various other minor injures. You come to land at the bottom of the hill aching and sore, but as you turn your eyes skyward you see the distance form of Zahak circling above.

Your mind is filled with unadulterated joy, amazement, excitement. Zahak seems absolutely thrilled with this turn of events, and as he swoops with surprising grace through the air you hear him excitedly shout {Papa!} over and over again into your mind. His thoughts are garbled, the word barely understandable, but you manage to understand him.

Unfortunately this little flying lesson has taken up most of the afternoon, and a glance towards the setting sun reveals you've likely only got a few hours left of daylight. It may be best to call it a night here and return later for a proper hunting trip. After all, Zahak is but a newborn. Granted, a surprisingly skilled newborn. You suppose that comes with the territory of being a dragon. Still, despite his skill you're not sure you want him facing a Griffin on the hunt, or a Pidjatan Lion on the prowl. Let alone one of the roving bands of Kateri Sarada.

You watch Zahak soar high above while absentmindedly healing you're wounds. They're minor, and don't really tax your reserves noticeably. Once you're healed up completely, you begin to trek your way back up the hill. Chrys greets you halfway up, a vague look of concern on her face. Once she sees that you're okay she simply nods and helps you the rest of the way up the hill, dragging you along.

Once you reach the top, Chrys speaks. She's addressing the whole group. “We'll be following the dragon where it leads us.” She turns to you. “Mik, you'll be the handler. We'll want it to stay ahead of us but not too far. We don't want it swooping down and attacking something it can't handle without us there to back it up.” She turns her attention back to the rest of the group. “As for the rest of us, we'll simply need to keep our weapons and our wits at the ready. Follow my lead, don't charge ahead, watch where you step, and above all else do not panic. Regardless of what it is we may face.”

That seems to conclude her little speech. She turns to you and nods, you take that as your cue to urge Zahak forward. You look skyward, to the circling form of your dragon. You picture a charred goat, fleeing deer, Zahak swooping down from above and snatching up a rabbit without even landing. The focus on the image of Zahak flying high above, with your group following beneath. You're not sure how much of it he understands, but after a few more circles above your group he sets off, towards the mountains.

You and your party follow below. Several times you have to urge Zahak to slow down, and he usually obeys. At one point you lose sight of him, but only a few minutes later he circles back into view. You walk, and walk, and walk yet more. It isn't long before the sun sets and you're forced to navigate by the light of the moon and stars. Fortunately, as is typical, it's a beautiful night. Not a cloud in the sky. You can easily pick out Zahak's pale grey form against the darkened backdrop of the night sky.

Eventually you're no longer in the foothills, you're scaling a narrow mountain path. You're not exactly sure when the terrain changed, one moment it was a hill, the next you were picking your way through rocky outcrops. Now you need only look to your right to find the vastness of the world laid bare before you. The wind buffets against you and your party, your cloak doing only little to keep the chill from your bones. You're regretting not getting your robes repaired before this journey as you can see snow on the mountain not very much further above you.

Zahak circles high in the air above, waiting at your behest. However, before you're able to find a route deeper inot the mountains he swoops down with a surprisingly loud screech, a jet of flame briefly illuminating the sky above you as the sound of his victorious shout echoes through the vast emptiness of the mountains. In a moment he's gone from sight, presumably landed on a ridge somewhere above you.

If nothing else the kids is a master fire vatis. Scary as some of the shit round here looks, I doupt they are going to be able to hurt Zahak worse than we can fix in the couple of extra minutes not getting our selves killed will take. Also Chryssa literally just told us to not panic above all else.

>>
While your gut screams for you to charge forward, reason wins out over emotion. Rushing forward would likely just result in you slipping and falling on your ass. You're not exactly the most graceful of individuals, after all. Instead you pick your way carefully but relentlessly up the mountain path, sliding across narrow ledges and even at one point resorting to picking your way up a sheer cliff. It ends up taking you several minutes to finally haul yourself up onto the platform you believe Zahak to have landed on, Chrys and Darzi beating you there by a small margin with Profectus trailing behind.

When you finally pull yourself up, you find yourself faced with a cave. Warm fire light shines from the entrance, and you can hear something, presumably Zahak, rummaging around inside. A rush of air echoes out of the cave's mouth and you see Zahak's shadow cast in stark focus as he presumably lets out a burst of flame. The smell of roasting meat seems to pervade the air.

If Zahak really smelled meat cooking on the fire from what must have been ten, twenty, perhaps even thirty miles away you'll be truly impressed. You assumed that a dragon's senses were superior to your own, but you didn't imagine they were that much better. It truly makes you wonder how the dragons in the cave did not notice you and your party. Perhaps it was the smell of sulfur and smoke in the air, obscuring your own. Perhaps they merely had better things to do.

Chrys turns to haul Profectus onto the ledge, and the four of you face the cave. Darzi sighs, leaning against the haft of her spear. “All that way for nothing...”

You peer absentmindedly into the tunnel, channeling Nature magic briefly. Your vision shades green, bright points of light appearing here and there. You see Zahak inside the tunnel, he glows like a damned torch in comparison to his surroundings. He appears to be hunched over something. You don't see anything else inside save a few plants, and what you think is a mouse or something of the sort.

You cut the flow of vys. Seems safe enough, after all. “I don't see anything inside, lets get Zahak and start heading back towards the temple.” Chrys nods, though she's focusing at something on a ridge above, you peer in the direction she's looking but don't see anything. She's knocked an arrow regardless. Darzi and Profectus seem blithely unaware that anything might be amiss. The four of you set off more or less in unison towards the cave entrance.

You, Chrys, and Darzi slip inside, while Profectus gets distracted by something at the entrance to the cavern. You round the corner to find Zahak laying comfortably on his back in a bed of hot coals, craning his neck upwards to rip off the charred flesh of what you think was once a billy goat. Its flesh hisses and pops as the fat boils away, the meat seared to a golden brown save where Zahak has burnt it, as he's seemingly wont to do.

“At least we'll not be left hungry, most of that goat's still good.” Darzi comments absentmindedly, drawing a knife from beneath her robes and stepping towards the goat where it sits upon a spit above your dragon and the coals it lays in. You're about to join her, when you hear Profectus shout something from outside.
(1/2)
>>
“Guys! Guys, come look at this! I found a message written in the wall!” You turn to see Profectus waving you over, he's pointing to something written on the wall, you can't properly see it from this angle. Chrys has taken a knee on the floor of the cave, her bow held at the ready. You're about to ask her what the hell she's doing, when a moment later Profectus collapses beneath the weight of a figure landing on top of him. A bright red glow illuminates the cave entrance and there's a sharp twang as Chrys looses an arrow, only for it to turn to ash in mid-flight.

When you finally get a good look at your attacker you see a woman perched atop Profectus, her knee digging into his back. She appears to be a human, dressed in some sort of fur-lined leather armor. She wields a dagger in one hand. Her other hands seems to be some sort of twisted construction of stone, glowing with some sort of internal light.

Just like Profectus' own stone arm.

The woman speaks first, in thickly accented Rhynian, just as Darzi rounds the corner with a strip of goat meat in hand. “What are you four doing invading my home?”

>Why talk? Attack her with overwhelming force, you ought to be able to overwhelm her before she seriously harms Profectus.

You hold up your hands in mock surrender. “My apologies, I was merely following my son.” Darzi shoots you a strange look, and you quickly tack on. “Adoptive son. He must have smelled meat cooking and gotten all excited, rushed up here before I could get him to calm down. If you'd like, I have rations with me. I could make up for the loss of your goat.”

Privately, you reach out towards Profectus using the connection afforded to you by the brooches. {How are you feeling, my friend? That looks like quite the painful position she's got you in.}

His response is swift. {By the gods above and below, Mik. I think I'm in love.}

You suppress the urge to throw your hands up in frustration. Gods! This man seems incapable of using his head, prefering his manhood's advice to logic.

The strange woman sits in silence for a moment, knee remaining firmly against Profectus' back. She places the dagger to his neck, releasing her oversized, clawed hand's grasp on the back of his head and instead pointing the limb towards the ground in front of you. She glances between the three of you; Chryssa, Darzi and yourself, for a moment before finally speaking again. “Where is this son of yours, stranger? I see no young dark-skinned elf.”

You hear Darzi's voice intrude on your thoughts. {Oh by the gods not this crap... Is it truly so hard to distinguish us from the common Elf?}

You reply in kind. {Suppress the urge to drive a blade through her gut, we'll have to deal with this one for now. This filthy, human may be so blatantly racist she can't distinguish us from our distant inbred cousins, but now's not the time to pick a fight.}

>Urge Zahak out of the hot coals he's still happily laying in. Perhaps the sight of a living, breathing dragon will cow her.

You scoff. “Come now, be reasonable!” You're careful to keep your tone amicable. After all, no reason to put her any more on edge than she already is. “How about, before I bring my boy out here, you put the knife away? You're obviously a powerful Vatis, I doubt being without that piddly little blade will put you at much of a disadvantage.”

She glares at you for a time, but relents. She pulls the dagger away from Profectus' neck and slips the dagger into a sheath at her hip. “Very well, now I expect you to do the same.”

You pull your cloak wide and slip your spear haft-first into your cloak. You're pleased to see her eyes go wide as it slips beyond the event horizon, into the void beyond. Darzi taps the pointed butt of her spear against the stone firmly and it retracts, sliding together until it's little more than a tubular green gem. You have to coax Chrys via the brooches, but eventually she relents and sheathes her bow, sliding her arrow into the quiver concealed on her back.

Perhaps as a peace offering, she climbs off of Profectus' back and helps him up. You note that he grabs her hand with his own stone hand, hauling himself up and leaning in close. He whispers something, you don't catch it. The woman scowls, and shoves him towards you. Profectus just grins as if he's pleased with himself, what he thinks he's accomplished you can't imagine.

The situation as defused as it's going to get you urge Zahak out of the coals. He seems reluctant, you detect a distinct dislike, even fear of the cold. He wants to stay inside the warm. The glorious warm! Eventually you manage to convince him to leave the warm, but only on the condition that you keep him warm instead. He pushes himself to his feet and wingtips, stirring ash and cinders into the air as he plods his way towards you. He's painted black with soot, but as you crouch down to run two hands cloaked in flame along his sides the ash is burnt away, revealing pale yellow scales beneath.

The woman take two sharp steps back, hissing under her breath. “Is that-”

You cut her off. “He's my adoptive son-” You hear Darzi groan in annoyance. “-His name is Zahak. He's just as intelligent as any normal child, more-so in fact. He's barely a newborn and he can already talk, fly, and use magic better than the vast majority.”

Your dragon opens its mouth and screeches at her excitedly. She seems more intimidated than anything else. “Gods above and below-” Profectus grins a goofy-looking grin. “-where did you find a dragon?! They've been gone from this world for tens, hundreds of thousands of years! Don't tell me, don't tell me there's more of them. Tell me it was a dormant egg or something. Gods, this could be a disaster!”

Huh, she seems surprisingly knowledgeable. More so than you would've expected.

You clear your throat, launching into an explanation. “Well, I discovered a series of mines beneath the fortress of Longia. I'll skip over the arduous task of exploring those mines and the trials I faced and simply say that, at the bottom, I discovered a nest of dragons. I managed to escape with an egg, and there was this whole-” You wave a hand dismissively. “-interlude during which I navigated a strange... place. Anyway, that's not important. Point is, he's the runt of the litter and I decided to give him a chance at life.”

The woman looks both horrified and confused. Mostly horrified. “What on Earth gave you the impression that was a good idea? Dragons... they were horrible tyrants. They created the elves solely to fight their proxy wars and produce food to sustain them. They ruled the world in time immemorial, when all was but suffering and labor.”

You quirk an eyebrow. “How do you know so much about dragons? Most are barely aware of their existence.” You hold up a hand. “Let me rephrase that. Most are barely aware of the myths surrounding their existence. None save you, the people in this cave and a handful of others know of their actual existence. Speaking of-”

She interrupts you irritably. “Yes, yes, I'll keep him a secret. I hardly leave the mountains anyway and I dare not interract with traders. You've little to fear from me spilling your secret, as morally opposed as I might be to raising a monster as if it were just a normal child.”

You bristle, drawing yourself up to full height. “He's no monster, woman. I'll not have you insult my son.” Perhaps it's a tad irrational to be so attached to a being which hatched only a few days ago, but damn it after all the shit you had to go through to get Zahak out of that mine and hatched you might as well be his actual father.

(1/2)
>>
The woman sighs. “Fine, very well. Now if you'll allow me to answer your original question: I've hardly any idea how I know half of what I know. My past is as much a mystery to me as it is to anyone else.”

Profectus cuts in. “My, but we have such an awful lot in common-” He subtly maneuvers himself in front of you. “Maybe if you'd come back with us we could talk about our experiences? You know, maybe over a few drinks-”

The woman sighs exasperatedly, cutting Profectus off. “No, I'm not going anywhere and I'm not joining you for drinks. I learned my lesson the last time I went down to the surface. Nothing but trouble to be gained from straying too far from my home. Now will you four-” She stops herself. “-five idiots leave me in peace?”

Holy shit you guys never learn, why would you vote to spend here?

Soma has said multiple times that we gain more from a severe failure than a vys modified regular failure, in fact I believe it's worth the least, if any, "experience" of roll outcomes.

But that's not all, he just told us before, that our companions will also be making the OBSERVATION roll. Something not so terrible to fail, but would be nice to get better in, too bad you used vys.

You step up, clapping Profectus companionably on the shoulder. “You'll have to excuse my friend, he might not have the most honorable of intentions but I assure you, he's a nice guy. A little dimwitted. Real bad luck too. Oh, and he's a lazy son of a bitch too-”

Chrys speaks up, passively commenting. “A bit of a problem with alcohol, gambling, and hookers as well.”

Darzi nods sagely, adding her own opinions regarding Profectus. “Not very assertive either, I would even go far as to say he's kind of a coward.”

You finish off the little bit your party has going. “-but a great guy, really. Not to mention we found him in a tube inside an old Rhynian ruin. He lacks his memories, has a stone arm that spews fire, knows some magic... if all else fails he's rich.”

Profectus hangs his head, running his fingers through his hair wearily. “Thanks... thanks for that guys. I mean, really. Way to make me sound like a worthless sod.”

More for giggles than anything else, you slide out from behind him with a big grin and your hands in the air, manifesting an illusory glowing sign above Profectus' head which reads 'Totally Not Worthless' and another one next to him which reads 'If You Use Your Imagination'. You're proud of the illusions too. They've got little figurines of you and the rest of the party, all presenting the text like it's some sort of poster in the street advertising the showing of a play or some such. Little lights explode into sparks around his head. It's an impressive illusion.
(1/2)
>>
She starts to laugh. Profectus looks up, confused. She has to lean against the cavern wall to keep from falling over. It takes several minutes for her to ultimately calm herself, settling first into sparse fits of giggling and then silence. She simply takes a moment to catch her breath. Eventually she sighs heavily and speaks. “Alright. I'll come along. Only for a day though, I'd not want to be gone for too long. You four-five, whatever, seem harmless enough.”

Profectus whips around to face you as you let the illusions drop. “By the Gods, Mik you're lucky that worked. Otherwise I'd be angry right now. Instead, you're going to have to teach me how the fuck you managed that.”
>Vys Pool (19/38)

You shrug your shoulders. “Significant magical power coupled with the sort of unhinged creativity inherent in the insane mind. Seriously, though. I did this for you, so don't fuck it up.” With that, you clap him on the shoulder. Your whispered conversation concluded. Your party, plus the addition of the strange hermit woman, begin the long trek down the mountain path and back to the distant Temple complex on the coast.

(2/3, I lied)
>>
By the time you finally sight the Temple's arena in the distance, it's well past midnight. You've long since had Zahak, who tired himself out after hours of flying, climb onto your back so you could carry him. You're able to manage it easier this time around, though not by much. Your legs are going to be killing you come morning. The pale grey light of dawn is beginning to peak over the horizon as you fade Zahak into invisibility and slip into the Temple; your party and the hermit woman, who's name you learned is Tertia (incidentally her name means Third in Rhynian), are absolutely exhausted. Tertia less so than the rest of you.

>You try it, running forward with your back bent and flapping your arms frantically. You reach the bottom of the hill you stand upon and turn back to look at your party. Zahak sits on the ground, his wings folded and head cocked to one side.
>>

Papa, you just went baka
>>
You pause, turning your attention to the warm waters of the baths. You're forced to pass through them on your way down to the main temple complex. You glance from the water, to yourself. You're caked in dirt and dried blood from the waist down. Your robes are in tatters. If you didn't know better, you'd mistake yourself for a homeless person.

Actually, you suppose you technically are a homeless person. Just a homeless person who's really incredibly wealthy. You are, after all, living off the generosity of the monks.

Regardless you pass through the bathhouse and into the changing room, then down the stairwell to the Temple proper. You note that Tertia seems increasingly tense and uncomfortable the deeper you go into the Temple. You get the feeling that this is less due to a fear of enclosed spaces, considering she lives in a cave, and more likely due to a apprehension regarding strangers. Especially large numbers of strangers.

As you make your way through the halls you reach out to Fulvia via the connection afforded to you by the brooches. {Fulvia, I've got someone I'd like you to meet. She's like Profectus, an old Rhynian experiment awoken from whatever sleeping tube, thing, she was stored in. I'd like you to share all that you know regarding who and what they are, if you know anything that is, and try to make sure they get along.}

Fulvia's response is as prompt as ever. {Very well, Mikhael. I will see to it. I can profess to be an expert on at least the topic of Profectus, though I give no guarantees that I'll be able to offer any insights into this woman's past.} You squint at nothing in particular. Have she and Profectus ever had a discussion about their shared history? You recall the incident beneath the Mines of Longia, the argument that very nearly got violent. You can't seem to recall ever having them sit down and just discuss what Fulvia knows about Prof's past.
(1/2)
>>
You shake your head, banishing such thoughts. As you make your way down the hallway leading to your party's suite of rooms you address Profectus. “Take Tertia to Fulvia's room. She'll be waiting for you there to have a nice, long discussion regarding what she knows about the experiments which likely resulted in the creation of you both. As for myself, I intend to get this burden off my back and then perhaps see about a bath.”

Chrys nods approvingly. “You could certainly use one. I did not wish to say anything, but you look like something of a slob.”

You shrug your shoulders apologetically. “Yes, well. I suppose over the last few days personal hygiene has not been one of my most prevalent concerns. Regardless, you and Darzi may do as you wish. Don't let me hold you up.”

They share a look, and then Darzi speaks. “Sparring?” Chrys responds with a nod, and the two of them wander off together. You wonder absentmindedly whether they'll be going to the arena, or the meditation ground, or some other location you're unaware of.

Regardless, with your companions taken care of you slip into your room and close the door behind you. You drop the illusion you've been using to keep Zahak invisible and nearly collapse as the vys expenditure finally hits you. You hadn't realized how much you'd been taxing yourself today.
>Vys Pool: (12/38)

Carefully, you remove Zahak from your shoulders and set him down on top of his blanket. You wrap it around him, bundling him up in the shifting red and yellow coals. Someone has come through and cleaned your room; replaced the bedding, removed all the ash, you've even been given new furniture. They seemed to have avoided the blanket, as soot still collects around it. They also didn't nab the gold that composes Zahak's meager horde. Probably because those coins are so hot they're glowing.
(2/3, I'm a dirty liar)
>>
Your dragon settled, you set off for the baths. You make good time to the changing room, where you swiftly strip nude. You hang your cloak on an available hook, but bring the rest of your clothing in with you. After all, might as well do laundry while you're here. Carefully, one step at a time, you make your way into the hot waters of the bath. You find a bench space and sink down, letting the water rise up past your shoulders.

The heat seeps into your aching muscles, allowing you a brief respite from the soreness which has plagued you since yesterday morning, and will likely only grow worse after today's strenuous physical activity. You feel yourself beginning to drift off without even really realizing it, head rested against the stone wall.
