>tfw third thread is hardest to start

It has been exactly one year since you were caught in a tragic car accident, followed by a miracle of modern medicine that saved your life. The risky brain surgery almost seemed like it would fail, but you not only survived but regained all your previous functions as a human being. It took a few weeks for you to notice them. Those things scratching at the edges of the walls and how the vines kept crawling closer to your window, the shadows of such tall and impossibly thin people with their razor fingers, the shapeless monsters that slowly but surely infected your every sense.

It has been exactly one year since the doctors that operated on you with a risky procedure saved your life. It has been nine months since that life became a curse, seven months since you stopped leaving the house, stopped leaving your room, and started seeing monsters overlap people.

>Last time our protagonist, named Adrianna, went down to meet her grandparents for the first time in nine months. After a confrontation with a reflection of herself that was born of her grandmother's fears and concern for her, Adrianna collapsed. When she woke to find herself in an unfamiliar room, she quickly realized something was wrong; or rather that something was right.

>You voted to wake in the same room, with a girl you've never seen before sitting at your bedside.
>>
>>36264948
You open your eyes to the same ceiling as before. The sound of pages flipping and classical music brings you to full awareness, slowly but steady all the same. You startle easily at the sight of her, pale as a ghost in a room of pale pastel colors and an odd sense of fashion to go with her displacement. You don't know her and the events of the last day have you on edge.

Your body trembles slightly in protest as you scramble up into sitting position, but you are terrified by the lack of everything you've come to know in this past year. The monsters, the scribbled and undulating mess of some demented madman's artistry, all of it is gone and cleared from your sight. You can perfectly feel the textures of your hospital gown, the blanket, and the lack of gross smells in the air is making you feel dizzy. But more then that is how there is not a single monster-looking thing overlapping the stranger before you. Even children have some manner of spectator staring out at the world.

This entire room is unfiltered by horrors and you want to know why.

There is a pregnant silence as you and the solemn girl with blue dyed bangs have a staring contest. Her book, a big old thing with yellowed pages and a dozen book markers, has long since been closed and set on her lap. She seems to be waiting for something.

>Demand to know what has been done to you.
>Ask for your parents.
>Ask what she was reading.
>Just talk, the silence is getting on your nerves.
>Continue staring.
>FLEE.

Your throat is dry but it doesn't stop you from hashing out some perfectly reasonable questions. Switching from fear-apprehension and confusion to a more angry form of those things is as natural as bread with butter.

"W-what did you do? Why is... where are t-they, where is my family? Th- the monsters and the everything it's all gone, all of it's gone. How..."

Instead of answering you, she stands impassively and walks over to a small counter and sink. With smooth motions the girl in blue opens the bottom cabinet to reveal the hum of a fridge. As if she had never left, the door is gently shut and she is again upon you now baring... gifts.

Orange juice and plain crackers have been placed in front of you.

"Adrianna Smith, female aged 16 years old. Normal childhood, was in tragic car crash at age 15 which greatly damaged brain. Doctor Elizabeth Grant preformed risky procedure in attempt to save subject's life. Was project to make full recovery but mental state began to deteriorate and led to multiple instances of causing bodily harm to self and others. Medication and therapy did not assist rehabilitation." Her voice is cold and methodical as if she was reading from a book, but it's light and airy.

"Shut up..."

"Records of exact surgery were unable to be found." Wait, what?

"Likely to be removed by Doctor Grant in effort to cover tracks, although from lack of attempted suicides or murders we can safely assume that her experiments have improved." She bends down and looks right into your eyes, lips thinning out into a grimace.

"My name is Maria, and I am sorry that we could not find you sooner. Your family has been waiting for you to regain conscious and we will alert them in post-haste. You are in a private clinic, and it is very safe."
>>
>>36265708
Your grip of the blanket tightens before you release it.

"You didn't explain shit." You get a small smile from Maria at that but not much more.

"You have been sleeping for two days in total, please eat."

>You keep asking Maria questions as you eat. There is no way you'll back down after she implies that this shit done to you on purpose!
>You don't feel very hungry or asking questions, so you'll just wait for your parents to arrive.
>You ask about Maria, she doesn't look much older than you. How can she be involved with what sounds like some crazy bullshit?

Wolf down those crackers and chug the juice, we've been sleeping for 2 days, probably hungry as shit.
We'll have time to ask shit after recovering from the coughing fit drinking and eating all that will probably cause.

Yeah, there was a TGQ at one point, not sure if it got dropped or what, I didn't follow it because the idea seemed to me that it wouldn't work very well.
Good, TG would bring too much suffering to the table, beside what you already have planned.
You're weak, Haise, come on, let me out!
I want our lord and savior Kanekipede to take his body back already ;_;
>>
>>36266085
Yeah, TG would add way too much suffering and had some themes that would clash with the other influences.

I just want Haise and the Kanekipede to make peace with one another like they Kuroneki and Shironeki did. The suffering never ends.

He hasn't been in control for 3 years, I bet he's starving. Qs could serve as appetizer/snack so he can hold out until the chance at a feast comes up.

How long do you think you'll be running, OP?
>>
>>36265721
You immediately start working on the food provided to you. Taking tiny sips of orange juice and bits of cracker, the slight salt of which makes you salivate, you chew it into a fine paste before swallowing. You've learned a lot of eating too fast or too much ever since you started holing yourself up in your bedroom. You've never really starved yourself, but making the trek down to the kitchen at night hadn't been your favorite activity. You didn't lose all that weight from staying healthy.

"So, 'Maria', who are you exactly?" And why do you know so much about me, goes unspoken.

With her fingers perched atop the old and worn book's cover, Maria's thin lipped smile becomes just a bit fuller. You get the feeling she's reading into your choice of question.

Your stomach flops about nervously when you realize you are not only talking to a stranger in meat space, but also one that can do a damn good impression of a snake. You should probably ask for your laptop.

"Someone that doesn't know enough to fully explain your situation, if that's what you're aiming for. But we do know from experience, albeit a rather reversed and ultimately different one, what you have been going through. It might be something that you'll have soon in that other world." The sound of tapping signals the end of her cryptic bullshit. Though part of her spiel was a bit worrying.

You watch her get up and return to the sink, this time acquiring a red plastic cup and filling it with water. Maria waltzes back unfettered by the stare that she maintains with you.

"O-okay, thanks. Then... How is here safe, and is that why I can't see those things anymore?" You see her place the book back into her lap like clockwork.

"Are you familiar with the works of Carl Jung?"

>He's like that Freud guy right? Has a bunch of theories about dicks?
>You mean the personality test guy? I'm an INTP.
>Is that what you were reading about?
>Uh, something about shadows and people don't like the truth?

"That would be... Uh, something something repressed parts of yourself called shadows? I read some stuff about him a while back, but it didn't really stick." You relax into a more comfortable position, sitting indian style while sipping water.

"Also stuff about Anima, Animus, and shit like Super Ego and dream analysis. What I do remember actually helped me a lot with figuring out the monsters. I mean, what the monsters are or are composed of. A lot of it was wrong or off but it still helped. Gave me a line to hold onto for a while." You frown slightly.

You've forgotten the exact words, the information that you speed read in effort to fix things as soon as possible. But to a fifteen year old girl that's had her life flipped inside out, the idea of a 'Shadow' that can be accepted by a person had quite a temptation.
>>
>>36268052
"Indeed, Carl Jung had quite a few things close to the truth." You notice her pitch or tone has changed slightly, as if she's more excitable.

Maria continues, "However as you said, his theories are not exact to what we know now." She once again makes the trip to the small kitchenette, this time to refill your water. How... kind of her.

"Though I was told not to tell you much, due to my own bias and not out of malicious intent I assure you, I do find myself enamored by your view of Other World. Other rather your possible insight. As such I will tell you the bare basics."

"The entities that your Side fights and subjugates are called 'Facets'. This is due to 'shadow' or 'persona' being more clear cut where as the monsters you have seen are often much less distinct. The Grand Facets have been described to overlap their owner, is this correct?" Holy crackers, she really isn't bullshiting you. No, Maria could have easily just asked your family or slew of former therapists.

"Minor Facets have no owner as they are born of the collective unconscious, to use Jungian terms. The emotions and feelings of humanity swirl around together in excess and form them. Majors on the other hand form over time as a person lives. They would be both the shadow and persona of a human." You stare into the cup of water, no longer thirsty but full of questions.

You can hear Maria's thumb rub circles into the cover of her book.
>>
>>36268065
"The Other World is a mirror, but it is convoluted and layered. It can be called a theater with many stages, some overlapping but never meeting. Facet Users fight the excess Minors in one big stage, where as Otherselves like myself have their own personal stage like a world all their own. We fight each other to the death even as the Waking Self lives their daily life..."

It sounds crazy and the fact that you've even had that thought makes you laugh.

"Pardon?"

"I-it's nothing, hee- I just thought, 'this is girl is crazy' so- pfftt" You are unable to breathe, and are probably crying like some stupid person that is completely off her fucking rocker.

The sound of the bed springs and feeling of weight joining you is all the warning you get. Still as quiet and rigid as before, Maria moves to bump her shoulder against your own. Your palm is pressed against your mouth as you sob and you make no move to push her away.

She looks at you, all stern and scowling. Like someone with severe emotional constipation.

"There are almond cookies in the refrigerator. We also have choices of apple, cranberry, and more orange juice. But you should probably choose water. I will get it for you."

"H-holy shit you are the w-worst..hic! n-urse!" You manage to squeak out, having started to hiccup.

"It's likely true. My usual ways of dealing with negative feelings is comprised of violence that typically ends in murder."

That is bullshit, but you believe it.

You decide to talk more about the crazy bullshit that Maria was telling you about earlier. Somehow this ended up being you describing your experiences of the past year...

"At first I just thought it was from stress. Totally excusable things, like something in the corner of your eye when you haven't slept in a while. And it was brain surgery, I was all loopy and in a daze so it was normal, but then it stopped being normal. Normal didn't entail something out of a horror movie coming up and trying to take a bite out of you."

Maria had gotten you those almond cookies, and damn are they good. Simple and kind of dry, but delious when you haven't eaten in days. Like fortune cookies.

"After the first month it just went further down hill. I kept hearing how my swift recovery was amazing, and then how the doctors were so sorry, that I was paranoid schizo-something. But the monsters did things, they could interact and hurt me. The hallucinations of how the landscape changed were fake but the monsters were so very real. I never attacked a single person no matter what the records say! Not before month seven anyway..."

"By the third month I started dreaming about the other world. Then it just started spiraling out of control, dying over and over every night because there was no way to fight back." In the real world it was rare for those Facets to actually harm people. It was like the overlaps could defend their owners. But you? You had nothing, and when dreaming had even less.

You were a perfect target and the horrors delighted in hunting you down every night.

"I tried to stop sleeping after that." But eventually even being awake cased to be a barrier. After a full year you depended on constant lights, caffeine, and the glow of you laptop monitor to ward away the beasts. You take another sip of water.
>>
>>36269729

"At times it was a bit fun, being able to take peeks at another person's... everything? Yeah, everything. You could see things about their monster and figure out what kind of person they were. When I realized it, that's when I binge read a bunch of shit about how people work."

Maria lifts her head up, carton of cranberry juice held close to her lips. Or what ever her actual name is.

"So it got better before it got worse?"

"More or less. I thought I'd gotten a handle on how my new brain worked. Could even stomach looking a" And you also thought you'd gotten a handle on how other people worked. How their problems worked. Maybe even that you could fix them.

People cannot be fixed even if they are broken.

"I am surprised that you went there yourself without your Facet..." Well she doesn't look it-

Wait. Yeah, Major Facets belong to a person and form other their life time which works with how children are almost always clear of overlaping. Facet Users have their Major and a few subjugated Minors, but you have always been alone in your dreams which apparently are not dreams at all.

"Do you think, what, that I just don't have one?" Maria looks uncomfortable and doesn't respond to you.

If the people that boss Maria around are rich enough to own their own clinic in the middle of no where, then you can't really fault her for following orders. Technically she already disobeyed orders, but that's beside the point.

"So what's the book about?"

"Lovecraft." Maria deadpans.

"O-oh." The idea of a maybe not humany but still person enjoying Cosmic Horror doesn't really stack well with your previous experiences where horror is concerned. You get the feeling she doesn't find the following silence to be uncomfortable.

"That was a joke, it's not actually Lovecraft since I prefer different works. It is however a collection of many different myths and fairy tales from varies cultures." The small and fox like smile works back onto her face. She totally got you.

"It wasn't a very funny joke!"

Something bubbles up from her throat, similar to a laugh but coming out more like a gurgle. Maria is even less of a people person than you are, and after almost a year of not leaving your room that is really saying something. You've kind of been throwing spaghetti at each other, only Maria's is uncooked and wheat noodles.

"I am not used to telling them." No shit.

"How come?" You cradle your chin in your right hand, staring at the unopened book perfectly placed in Maria's lap. The two of you are still waiting on the bed, facing each other at opposite ends.

"I have spent most of my life in my Stage, or traveling to other ones in order to fight. Because it is my purpose to shoulder the burden of pain for my Other, all that I knew to do was fight with those like me and to kill them. Our Side has more clear cut distinctions between 'Shadow' and 'Persona'. In many ways I suppose one could call me a humanoid Facet if not for the fact that we can grow to be our own people and not just moving puppets meant to do battle."

"Because I am emotions and even the littlest of trauma's, and because we have no need for spoken words. That world doesn't need a face to present to people. It is the utmost of direct action. We only have names because they are what we are... It bares little sense when described. We tend to reform after death."

You know why this sounds familiar to you. Running a gauntlet every single night is one thing, but having that be your whole entire life?

"I don't really have a good response for that, but there are some scarily similar elements to your case and my dreams."

"There are not supposed to be."
