/tg/ - Traditional Games

Welcome to the XXXIII installment of "Disney Villains Victorious."

Disney Villains Victorious is a new /tg/ homebrew project based on the idea of a world, not entirely unlike our own, in which all the villains from all the Disney animated feature films were not defeated at the ends of their movies but were instead victorious, completing their goals in part or in whole.

It is a world in which Ursula rules the seas, defied only by the uncatchable Pirate Lords, the cutthroat merchants of the East India Trading Company and the might of Atlantis and its magitech-toting mercenaries. It is a world where the grasslands and jungles and forests are prowled not only by fearsome primal beasts like Shere Kahn and Scar but also by the ruthless, tireless hunters that stalk them. It is a world where Europe has been divvied up between evil sorcerous monarchs like Maleficent, the Horned King, Grimhilde and Jafar, mad, inquisitorial clergymen like Frollo, and Dark Gods like Hades and Chernobog.

It is not, however, a world completely devoid of courage, heroism or hope. Around the world, the PCs' characters and their allies plot and plan, fight and strive and win their own victories against the villains that would rule them. The time to fight and to be free is now.

repostan from last thread's discussion
Villain-by-villain determined methods of immortality:

Sorcerer-Sultan Jafar of Agrabah
>Incredibly powerful desert magic and powers. Unquestionably immortal, so is everyone else he wants.
Maleficent the Faerie Queen
>A fucking dragon. A magic dragon.
Grimhilde the Fair Queen of the Mirror Kingdom
>Magic gives her eternal life as long as she's fairest of them all.
The Horned King of Prydain
>A skeleton.
Doctor Facilier of the Shadowlands
>Deals with the Friends.
Queen La of the Leopard Kingdom
>Jungle magic and shit. All her court is probably still alive too.
Elsa the Frozen Queen of Arendelle
>Winter magic, doesn't age past probably 21. Uncertain of how well that'd apply to other people, but it can probably be done.
Empress Yzma of the Sunless Empire
>Fucking SCIENCE. Kronk is most certainly still alive and well too as a result of her mad science experiments, undoubtedly her and anyone she chooses is immortal.
Pontifex Immortalis Frollo of the Grand Archdiocese
>A skeleton.
Tzekel-Kan of El Dorado
>Gods keep him alive through sacrifice and prayer.
Shan-Yu of the Hun Dynasty
>Unknown, maybe fucking around with ancestor spirits
Governor Radcliffe of Virginia
>Not immortal. Has a dynasty of identical-looking children.
Imperial President Lyle Tiberius Rourke of the Imperial Republic of Atlantis
>Crystals keep him and everyone else he wants alive. Maybe trades them.
Alameda Slim, Sheriff of the Old West
>Who knows?
McLeah, Clayton and Gaston of the Elite Global Huntsman Club
>????? Crystals?

Not even gonna bring up Gods. This should be obvious. Also, people can steal souls from Hades and stuff them back into bodies if they're determined enough.

Scar, High King of the Pridelands
>Something evil. Probably stealing souls or something
>Unsure about every single other beast lord
>>
>>36269984
I thought for Beast Lords, several people agreed with Queen La fucking around and accidentally making them immortal?
>>
>>36270007
Yeah, we had some people discussing that. It's certainly possible, but we're still in flux about how exactly to make the Beast Lords immortal.
>>
36269973
So, what do we call this big event of time fuckery? Let's outlaw the words "Happening" and "Cataclysm" as nouns when we're thinking about this.
>>
>>36269984
Why not have Shan-Yu also have a dynasty?
>>
>>36269984

Scar steals the life force from his Land.

The other Beast Kings devours the souls of those they eat.

Radcliffe and Alameda got crystals from Rourke in exchange for an alliance with him.

The Hunters bought immortality either from Gothel or from Rourke.

>>36270007

It think was that was proposed but never discussed.
>>
>>36270059
The Cherry-bombing?
>>
>>36270059
Meant for >>36269973
Replying to things in other threads is weird.
>>36270067
Because the villain is Shan Yu, not his son or whatever.
>>
I would like to repost from the last thread that not every villain necessarily needs to be immortal and ageless yet, like the Elite Global Huntsmen, Alameda Slim or the Beast Kings.
>>
>>36270067

And Shan Yu took the Mandate of Heaven and somehow used it to make himself immortal, which is what made the Ancestors so angry in the first place.
>>
>>36270084
Multiple people said that they thought it sounded good. Not to mention it makes more sense than somehow being able to consume the souls of anything you eat. Although now I think about it, that'd be pretty cool. Is there some other effect of that? Maybe it gives each Beast King powers related to his nature, so Scar becomes an incarnation of famine able to turn the water in an enemy's body to dust instead of just being a big lion.
>>
>>36269984
Hunters Club could be hunting beast lords / other magical creatures and feeding off their immortality

Possibly by way of trading with Yzma.
>>
>>36270114

Oh, I like this. I think there was also some talk about his hawk becoming a pheonix?
>>
>>36270114
That's actually a good idea for two reasons: First, it explains why he's immortal and second because we never did explain why he didn't get the mandate. This solves both problems really well, actually.
>>
>>36270134
Oh hey, like eating all those rare delicacies from endangered animals with supposed healing properties.
>>
>>36270114
I'll change that one for Shan Yu, since it looks pretty good and like people agree with it.

How about beast lords, though? That's the issue there seems to be the most divide on their immortality.
>>
>>36270134

Also nice.

>>36270140

He's got the Mandate of Heaven, so he can give his hawk a promotion if he wants.

>>36270128

They are Kings: being connected to the Land gives them great powers. That's like asking how did Scar cause a drought just by being a lousy ruler
>>
>>36270128

Forgot to add:

And yes, it would give them great powers, so they are actually Kings instead of just a lion and a tiger.

Now, when Khan roars, it's not only the will of his enemies that tramble, but also their own very flesh.
>>
>>36269984
Mother Gothel probably sells Grimhilde, and anyone else able to pay the monetary cost, eternal youth using Rapunzel.
>>
I don't mind saying hat inlet Kessler get a little worked up last thread, but at the risk of sounding sappy I "let it go" and feel much better now.
>>
>>36270238

>>
>>36270252

>>
>>36270252

I guess it was supposed to be

>"let myself get"

but how do you get Kessler out of that?
>>
>>36270260
Listen to your mumsey.
>>
It wasn't the most glamourous job in the colony, that's for sure. Thankfully, they were.. far enough away from the coast that they were given a certain degree of freedom. The 29th Superior Mounted Rifles were the first line of defence against the savages in the north, and damn if they weren't effective. When they were sober. As in, not now.
"C- c- c'mon sarge, you know they appreciate us"
"Bullshit!" Spat the old man, "High-up's got such a hard-on for irregulars they never give us the coin we need!"
The patrol was swaying dangerously on their horses, casting long, twisting shadows in the light of the full moon. The 18th Rifles' moonshine wasn't famed for a fae deal, that's for sure.
“'Least we ain't in the catskills,” said one figure from the back, “my cousin got magic'd by one-a those witchy-folk. Zombified.”
“Oh, 'cause ghost-bears are so much better?”
“Screw you, Jameson.”
Suddenly, the ragged column came to a halt. The figure leading it, Captain John Seymour, was perplexed.
“Are these... ruins?” He called back. He was less inebriated than most.
“Amherst,” came the whisper up the line.
Amherst was a legend. A fort on the Lake Ontario, from before the spirits claimed the area. Supposedly, it had fallen to the savages long before the spirits arrived. Supposedly, the soldiers hadn't rested easy. Supposedly, nobody ever came back alive. One thing was certain, though. They weren't in Virginia anymore.
>>
>>36270238
This is reasonable. I imagine Rapunzel's hair is so long at this point that it can form youth-pipelines through western Europe.

Rapunzel herself is obviously bound at all times, suspended from the ceiling by her miles-long hair.

later tonight i'll make a pastebin of pastebins.
To our potential playtesters; Would you rather see a game set in Washington, DC (ruled by Atlantis) or in the spirit-infested wilds of Japan with a serious clusterfuck going on?
>>
>>36270238
>>36270260
>>36270302

And so we have something important for Gothel to do: she's the one that's keeping some of the less powerful Kings alive.
>>
>>36270280

"hat inlet Kessler" was supposed to be "that I let myself," but I've caused enough if a digression as it is. I really like these immortality schemes. They feel true to the characters and unique enough to not get boring.
>>
>>36270301
>>36270338

Nailed it.

Anyway: do we all agree with how each King stays immortal?

Are we missing some of them?
>>
Version 1.1
Sorcerer-Sultan Jafar of Agrabah
>Incredibly powerful desert magic and powers. Unquestionably immortal, so is everyone else he wants.
Maleficent the Faerie Queen
>A fucking dragon. A magic dragon.
Grimhilde the Fair Queen of the Mirror Kingdom
>Gets eternal youth through Rapunzel’s hair.
The Horned King of Prydain
>A skeleton.
Doctor Facilier of the Shadowlands
>Deals with the Friends keep him eternally young for a steady supply of souls.
Queen La of the Leopard Kingdom
>Jungle magic and shit. All her court is probably kept alive by her druidic magic too.
Elsa the Frozen Queen of Arendelle
>Winter magic, doesn't age past probably 21. Can probably apply to other people through connecting emotionally.
Empress Yzma of the Sunless Empire
>Fucking SCIENCE. Kronk is most certainly still alive and well too as a result of her mad science experiments, undoubtedly her and anyone she chooses is immortal.
Pontifex Immortalis Frollo of the Grand Archdiocese
>A skeleton.
Tzekel-Kan of El Dorado
>Gods keep him alive through sacrifice and prayer.
Shan-Yu of the Hun Dynasty
>Took control of the Mandate of Heaven in China, manipulating it’s powers for his own immortality
Governor Radcliffe of Virginia
>Not immortal. Has a dynasty of identical-looking children.
Imperial President Lyle Tiberius Rourke of the Imperial Republic of Atlantis
>Crystals keep him and everyone else he wants alive. Maybe trades them.
Alameda Slim, Sheriff of the Old West
>Either crystals or a deal with the Friends..
McLeah, Clayton and Gaston of the Elite Global Huntsman Club
>Crystals, or stealing the souls of magic animals they kill

Not even gonna bring up Gods. This should be obvious. Also, people can steal souls from Hades and stuff them back into bodies if they're determined enough.

ALL OF THE BEAST KINGS
>Either linked to their lands through a pocahantis kinda thing or stealing souls.
>>
>>36270373
Maybe we should make a poll for Slim, the Huntsmen and the Beast kings.
>>
>>36270327
I would prefer Japan because my character lives there. If I could actually make it to a playtest, it would be perfect.
>>
>>36270373

The only one I have a problem with is Radcliffe.

It would make sense for him to have an atlantean crystal, but I also like the idea of him being dead and his son running the show.

It would keep him as a truly mundane villain in a movie where the good guys are more magical than usual.
>>
>>36270373
Oh shit, forgot to include 'Magical fuck-up by Queen La made them immortal' for the Beast Kings.
>>36270327
I dunno, but if it's in Japan I'll make a new character to play that playtest (If I play), because Sverd has zero reason to be in China or Japan.
>>36270433
Yeah, that was the idea. Just one guy who isn't actually immortal/
>>
>>36270420

Should I?
>>
>>36270433
Yea, I feel that Radcliffe is really one of the lesser evils of the setting, if only by virtue of the fact that he's wholly human and an evil we know.
>>
>>36270477
Go ahead.
>>36270479
There's quite a few 'villains' that pale massively in comparison to other ones on the list. Generally, if you can convince them to help you in some way (And you totally could get Radcliffe to help), they're not totally evil.
>>
Here, poll.

http://www.strawpoll.me/3024943
>>
>>36270528
I love the name "Queen La's Great Magical Fuck Up"
>>
>>36270479

You could make the governorship an inherited title, passed down from Radcliffe to Radcliffe.

>>36270420

Slim, perhaps, hasn't reached the point yet where age has slowed him down, and could have a lot of irons in the fire to see which immortality option he likes best.

I like the idea of the Beast Kings being primal forces taking their powers from the land, in the case of the good or passive ones, or from other beasts in the ones that are more actively evil hunters.

The Elite Global Huntsmen's Club and Cruella DeVille could get their immortality in much the same way, by eating the rare, endangered and extinct animals for their magic and their vitality.
>>
>>36270578

Moving on to the next poll.

http://www.strawpoll.me/3024969

Considering the Mandate of Heaven should be able to be revoked by, well, Heaven, couldn't we have Shan Yu warring on Heaven itself?
>>
>>36270849
There's a lot of different Heavens and Gods in the Disneyverse. Some are more powerful than others. Shan Yu is certainly fighting the Ancestor Spirits.

Version 1.2, also pastebinned because this should probably make it's way into the 1d4chan page and the final PDF.
Sorcerer-Sultan Jafar of Agrabah
>Incredibly powerful desert magic and powers. Unquestionably immortal, so is everyone else he wants.
Maleficent the Faerie Queen
>Has magical Dragon powers, functionally immortal. Grimhilde the Fair Queen of the Mirror Kingdom
>Gets eternal youth through Rapunzel’s hair, sold by Mother Gothel.
The Horned King of Prydain
>An unaging skeleton.
Doctor Facilier of the Shadowlands
>Deals with the Friends keep him eternally young for a steady supply of souls.
Queen La of the Leopard Kingdom
>Jungle magic and shit. All her court is kept alive by her druidic magic too, occasionally screws up and makes something unintentional immortal.
Elsa the Frozen Queen of Arendelle
>Winter magic, doesn't age past 21. Can probably apply her immortality to other people through legitimately connecting emotionally.
Empress Yzma of the Sunless Empire
>Using mad science and crazy experiments, undoubtedly her and anyone she chooses is immortal.
Pontifex Immortalis Frollo of the Grand Archdiocese
>Became a Lich because of Chernabog’s trickery.
Tzekel-Kan of El Dorado
>Aztec gods keep him alive through sacrifice and prayer.
Shan-Yu of the Hun Dynasty
>Took control of the Mandate of Heaven in China, manipulating it’s powers for his own immortality.
Governor Radcliffe of Virginia
>Not immortal. Has a dynasty of identical-looking children, of which every male is named ‘Radcliffe’.

Comment too long.
>>
>>36270849
The Heavens are probably occupied with more important things than who rules China, and let it slide until Churn-a-Bong is taken care of.
>>
So

>Shan Yu is immortal thanks to his abuse of the Mandate of Heaven, which is also what made the Ancestors so mad with him.

>The Beast Kings are immortal thanks to the life force they take from their land or from those they devour.

>The Hunters found a way to do the same, feeding upon the souls of the magical animals they hunt.

>Radcliffe and Alameda Slim are not immortal yet.

But let's wait a bit, just to be sure.
>>
>>36270883
Imperial President Lyle Tiberius Rourke of the Imperial Republic of Atlantis
>Crystals keep him and everyone else he wants alive. Maybe trades them.
Alameda Slim, Sheriff of the Old West
>Not yet immortal- Considering his options between the Friends, Crystals, or maybe something else.
McLeah, Clayton and Gaston of the Elite Global Huntsman Club
>Steal the souls of magical animals they kill, keeping them eternally young.
Usula of All-Oceans
>Trident gives her immortal power.

ALL OF THE BEAST KINGS
>The more neutral ones take power from their land, the active hunters/more evil ones take the life force of animals they devour.

>>

It is absolutely beyond me how Grimhilde got locked in with Maleficent's immortality method.

>Winter magic, doesn't age past 21. Can probably apply her immortality to other people through legitimately connecting emotionally.
Sverd you sneaky bastard, did you slip in a way to give your knight immortality through his ice-waifu?

the who what now
>>
>>36270933

We haven't talked about them in while, yeah.

If I remember correctly, Wendy was taked captive by Ursula, Christopher Robin was taken captive by Kaa, while Alice was hiding with the Hunters while being hunted by weird animal pouring into the real world from Wonder Land.

>>36270106
It's supposedly been some time since the Cherrybombing. 20 years was the estimate last thread. How long do lions live?
>>

Since Elsa's powers are emotion-based, an extension of her powers by making an emotional connection with a calmed-down Elsa made sense.

Lost/Captive until the players do something.

Speaking of the Dreamers...
>Of the few noblemen and diplomats to meet Queen Grimhilde in person, even fewer have seen her Magic Mirror.
>Though they occasionally hear voices come through it.
>The first is the loud, booming voice that everybody knows the Mirror sounds like, even if they've only heard that's what it's supposed to be.
>The second?
>The crying of a young girl, trapped behind a looking glass.
>>
>>36271086
The good thing about most of Disney's animal characters is that their stories can really take place at any time. Scar's rise to power could easily have happened only a few years ago.
>>
>>36270979

Never Land, the Hundred Acre Wood and Wonder Land are Dream Realms created by Dreamers.

Facilier wants to give (feed?) these Dream Realms to his Friends on the Other Side, which would make him even more powerful. He needs to find the Dreamers to do that.

Wendy, Christopher Robin and Alice have all disappeared somewhere. Most of Facilier's plans are focused on finding them, which gives him something to do.
>>
I like the idea of Chernabog pulling all areas into one time from the time when they were at their grimdarkest (right as the villains rose to power) and making a patchwork world. Villains can still be immortal, and this process could have taken time, but it explains the things like ancient Greece being on the same continent as Catholic France.
>>
>>36271147

Uhhh, nice.

>>36271174

That's what we agreed on, I think.

>>
>>36271243
>>36271287

So, by double poll consensus, I'd say that

>Chernobog crashed time itself and brought together the darkest moments in History.

Is now our canon.
>>
>>36271243
>>36271287

So looks like people do want everything taken and smashed together by Churro Burger. I assume we're still doing that different nations have been there for different periods of time, or else a bunch of characters start making no sense and some pretty serious limitations on origins come out.
>>
>>36271439

Clearly: Ancient Greece here, Modern New York there, and bam, Villain world.
>>
>>36271427

I like this - it definitely feels like something Chernobog would do. He revels in chaos and disruption, and what better way to bring a land to ruin than by slamming together its worst when's and where's?
Plus, it explains the clusterfuckness of the map, which seems now more like a strength than an oddity.
>>
>>36271439
Yeah atlantis has still been there for long enough to allow a generation of atlantean-americans, certain nations have been in function for quite some time (like the mirror kingdom) while others were jut recent (like arrendelle)
>>
>>36271461

Also, it happened twenty years ago at least.

I mean: Radcliffe even had time to die and leave behind a son!
>>
>>36271439
What do you mean by that last part? Nothing says the game happens JUST AFTER this event. Chances are they didn't even have their empires by the time Cherny smashed time apart. Then they just conquered the world in the confusion.
>>
>>36271512
Kind of like this guy said: >>36271476

Basically saying that Sverd could exist as a recent emigrant from Arrendelle (less than a year) while people like Mary exist, who was born and raised in Atlantis. I'm just assuming that's still good.
>>
And think about the confusion for the normal people: maybe South Italy came in with Frollo and only later conquered by hades, which means there people there who remember a lot of shit that, according to their new God and Master, never happened.
>>
>>36271553
It's entirely possible that Sverd could have just come from Arendelle post-Freezing. He was probably still part of a noble family. Hell, he might even be the last of his line. Sure, maybe he was a child at the time of Elsa's Coronation. Then once news reached him, he spent 20 years learning to fight and generally be a badass knight before deciding he had to save the kingdom. Sounds like a damn cool backstory to me.
>>
>>36271553
>>36271476

Exactly. There has to be a teensy, weensy bit of a timeline in place, just to allow for the different nations to develop their own histories.

Arendelle still having refugees that haven't settled down quite yet while Atlantis has first generation Atlantean-Americans of mixed parentage like Mahrikatohka "Mary" Smith
>>
>>36271619
No, I'm saying he was 19 or so at the time of Elsa's Coronation and left when things started getting fucked, and is 20 now.
If we're assuming that nations were plopped in at different points, this is plausible. If everything was smoshed in together at the exact same moment, it no longer is and Sverd's backstory becomes a lot less interesting and a lot more tragic little kid bullshit. By relying on the powers of Chernabog's time bullshittery and pushing nations into the stream at different points, we can assume that both of those two can exist.
>>
>>36271501
>>36271476
>>36271439
>>36271553
My idea was that it would take a bit. Even Churn-O-Bog™ didn't have the power to fuck all of time at once, so he did the world in chunks, taking one empire at a time. Atlantis and Virginia may have been among the first, a couple decades back, and Arrendelle could have been one of the last, in the past 5-10 years
>>
>>36271668
>>36271701
So what I'm hearing here is that it's still cool. That makes me happy.
>>
>>36271693
>>36271701

I'd prefer everything at the same moment.
>>
>>36271701
Suppose that works. But then the world as it is seems to have been built up again since the Cherrybombing, so how did that happen if countries were still coming in less than a decade ago?
>>
>>36270327

I can go either way. Though, funnily enough, the guinea pig is the closest to Japan out of all the characters I have.

I'm also planning on making a Charismatic shadowlander as well if we're going to go with a DC campaign.

I also don't think it's reasonable to change the setting for one playtesting character, but the fuller timestream makes for a more interesting world. We don't have to develop areas that we don't want to stagnate, but we don't have to keep from developing the areas that need it. It's the best of both worlds, and gives us the most freedom. I don't see any real reason against it, but if someone has one, please state it.

-------------------------------
My dearest Sylvia,
I suppose I've put this off for long enough, Thomas had always told me that I should do something in lieu of a funeral, or, whatever event would be proper for this separation. It's been five years since I last held you and little Jackie in my arms. Five years since that damned expedition went beneath the atlantic waves, never knowing they'd not see the shores of home again.

We all knew there was a risk that we wouldn't come back. After all, the technology was unreliable and any employer hiring as many mercs as Whitmore did was expecting trouble. Still, we thought it worth a good trade with how much he promised. I know I promised you that the risks were minimal, but you were right, god you were right.

It was bad enough after the sub went down after being attacked by that monster... Leviathan I think Thatch called it. The expedition I promised you was safe claimed all but a few dozen of the 200-strong crew. Despite our misgivings about Rourke (and we all had them, even way before he started styling himself "Imperial President"), I can't say there was a man among us who didn't find themselves moved by his words after we'd lost so much.

The journey we took to make it to the city claimed even more of us, not only to the volatile geography, but also to strange creatures and other obstacles that littered the way. Most gave up on any idea of being able to get back home. We took things a step at a time, moving forward only thanks to Rourke holding us together, and having no other way to go. The force that made it to Atlantis was tired, angry, and desperate for anything that would make it all worth while, something to justify the sacrifice. We were desperate, and while that doesn't make what happened next right, I just hope you understand.

A hot issue.
I really don't understand what reasons people have for not wanting a varying timestream. What benefit does it hold, versus the logical and practical benefits that having one does?
>>
>>36271953

Oh sush.
It'll be saved either way.
>>
>>36271950
I was there with the squad that burst into the royal chamber. I was there when Rourke marched in, the princess held at gunpoint. Thomas and grabbed their ancient king and held them while Rourke demanded their crystal and delt the blow that would end his unimaginably old reign. He didn't even look away from Rourke as he faded, and he slumped dead in my hands while Thatch looked on raging and the princess crying out in their strange tongue.

I don't know what happened next after Rourke and the LT took Thatch and the princess below to the crystal chamber, but when they came out, the princess had... changed. She was... alight, and her skin looked like it was made out of the crystals they all wore around their necks. Thatch seemed comatose, and Rourke had a different look in his eye. I didn't understand it at first, but in retrospect, I think it was then he hatched his plan to style himself as the savior of there ancient people.

He didn't actually intend it at first of course, but it was easier to tell the Ats' that their king had kept them isolated and that the noble surface dwellers and the rebellious princess had reclaimed the power of Atlantean glory for the people who it truly belonged to, than to just attempt to stage the kidnapping of the new queen of a people who had strange-ungodly power at their disposal. So he had Thatch restrained and he lied, oh he lied and lied, told them about how he'd go back to the surface, spreading the word about how the great ancient empire had returned, and "return the noble people of Atlantis to their proper place of power and majesty in the world".

At least he listened to Thatch enough to not take the girl out of the city, god knows it probably would've either killed them all or incited some arcane At'tech we still don't understand. I still can't decide if it was worrying or reassuring that the crystallized woman didn't respond to the events around her.

The reason we have things like ancient Greece in the same world as colonial America and an Incan Empire is that Chernabog pulled different areas out of time at the moment the villains won and brought them all to one time.

The timestream concept that people are talking about is the idea that he didn't pull all of the world into place at once, but took his time, so one area, ruler, or civilization could have had 20 years to develop in this world (Ex: Atlantis), while another could have only had 3-5 years (Ex: Arrendelle)

Because then you just have countries appearing out of nowhere, and yet we still somehow have a coherent world with established nations. Also, what are these "logical and practical benefits" you speak of? It seems even less logical and practical than ever to me. New generations raised in the new era. Arendellean barbarian tribesmen who were once members of noble families. Veterans of wars to establish the world fought between the kings. It creates concepts and you know it.
>>36272096
What do you mean by "stagnating"? You're using all these technical game design terms and giving no explanation as to what they mean. Stop talking in technobabble.

>>36272118
And this is why the idea of "everyone arrives at a different time" doesn't work with our present fluff. Surely, the world would have been altered by the knowledge of how this happened. The Kings would want to know what the fuck was going on. But no, they're not really doing anything for the most part.

What?
What part of the fluff doesn't it work with?
The first nations plopped in needed time to get their bearings and establish themselves. As more got dragged in, they started interacting, and the ones that needed the least time to 'set up' were thrown in last.
>>
>>36271984
Rourke split the expedition in two. I still remember that 'noble-statesman' look he had on his face (he still uses it when he gives speeches) when he told them that "the men that stay behind will keep the peace, and make sure that your new Queen is protected during this time of transition."

Protect the queen my ass. I was with those who stayed behind, and we had as many guns pointed at her as we did pointed at the native Ats if they got restless. We didn't leave the throne room during the weeks we waited for the first group to return. We sat there, playing cards and trying to ignore those pupil-less eyes watching us from her dead father's throne. Those eyes stared out as us, judging us, yet never acting. None of us ever saw her face so much as twitch, but we all somehow knew they watched us with contempt.

When the first group returned, no one understood what had happened. The world topside had changed. The geography was the same, but the time wasn't. Science wasn't. The crew came back with stories of attacks by hostile sea creatures, flying sailing ships bearing pirate flags, and how America had been sent back in time to before the revolution. Everyone and everything we knew, you, Jackie, Thomas' girl Katie, everyone was GONE.

We lost you all.

While I hate the man for the liar that he is, Rourke did his best to give us direction in those aimless days. We claimed a small section of the east coast to call our own, using our modern weapons and the little At-tech we understood to carve out a holding. He was right when he said we had what it took to survive, to rebuild. We had experts in their fields, technical knowledge decades (and in some cases centuries) ahead of the rest of the world, and most of all we had the Ats themselves.

Magic.

Most of the kings are magical, an the ones that aren't are either paranoid/militant or are in highly distant areas. Expanding isnt all up to your magical power, it's up to the people and their willingness to spread. What are you even on about? This isn't a video game where people breed and expand at a fixed rate, there's plenty of open space to spread in most kingdoms.
>>
>>36272397

I think that the Beast's castle is either ruined or occupied by the Beast and Belle's bastard, beastling daughter. Right now, the idea is that the Huntsmen get their longevity and immortality by eating rare and exotic beasts for their magical properties.

The Ats weren't the strongest or the smartest folks, but they were eager to learn and explore anything they could get themselves into. They'd all spent untold amounts of time crammed into their civilizations ruins, they couldn't even run any of that borderline-magic technology they had until Rourke somehow got Thatch to start filling in the holes. They learned engineering, chemistry, hell, even the arts with gusto. It didn't take long to, despite our limited resources, push our little republic (Rourke was quickly elected president for life since the Ats saw them as the "restorer of their ancient glory" and their queen was an inanimate crystal back beneath the surface) to its limits.

Rourke had found himself the perfect people to reestablish civilization, and he always had this greedy look in his eye when he looked upon the factories and mines that began to spring up. But he saw the Ats wanted more. Already they were taking some of the flyers and other vehicles that we were bringing up to the surface to try and strike out on their own. When he sanctioned the "Imperial Borders Expansion Policy", Rourke basically created a way to let the restless Ats expand his little kingdom without being required to lift a finger himself.

First of all: batteries.

Second of all: there are less than 100,000 of them. They just don't have the people to hold that land. Maybe they held some land, but they likely made a pact with Virginia, and the Shadowlands expanding limited their options.
>>

>>
>>36272591

>>
>>36272638
I can't think of a kingdom that hasn't done something like that, likely. In Europe Cherrybomb is holding France alive via his demonic powers to create maximum suffering in Europe. Virginias opportunities are limited. The EITC has highly limited population, and their enemies the Pirates have no desire to hold much land. The Huns are locked in a magical stalemate with the Arabians, who are locked in a magical stalemate with Queen La, who has no desire to expand, and Hades, who is really fine with just sitting in his borders and laughing as the Titans just fuck things up. There isn't a civilization in this universe with a jingoistic desire to expand that isn't matched by an equally strong neighbor, or a relatively peaceful but incredibly strong magical empire.
>>

>>

It's likely multiple nations were put in at the same time after Atlantis. Chernabog would want to balance it so each nation could grow just strong enough to balance each other out for MAXIMUM SUFFERING, ensuring no one ever gained control.
>>
>>36272763
Then he'd put them in at the same time, enforcing a permanent stalemate. Preferably with constant war, so there's some lovely meat grinders for the Kings to throw their subjects in.
>>
>>36272747
Yes but if we're under the impression that all the nations are coming in at different times then if Catholic France came in first there would be literally not stopping them from trying to spread as far and as fast as possible. And then exerting their increased resources to crush any newcomers. If everyone comes in at once then it makes sense that nobody has room to expand without starting a massive world war but if they come in one at a time then at least half of the villains would completely for expansion.
>>
>>36272747
Which is why having them come in one at a time fucks everything up.
>>
>>36272559
And that's why I'm writing this letter to you. Why I'm writing to you and Jackie, wherever you are. Thomas threw in his lot with a group of Ats who are looking to see what's become of the Hawaiian islands, and he's offered me a place. I haven't done what the others have. I didn't build you gravestones, I didn't hold you a ceremony despite all those I attended. No, I always kept it out of my mind, subconsciously telling myself that you're still out there somewhere... but I can't do it anymore.

They're so like us now, the Ats. They listen to their radios, play baseball, and even their tattoos are beginning to take some of the symbols and pictures of old America. They're even copying the way we speak. It's reminding me of you. Everywhere I'm beginning to see strange white-haired versions of you, and I'll think I'm seeing Jackie playing baseball before I realize it's just one of those kids born without the white hair because they're only half-At. I can't handle this anymore.

I have to accept that you're gone. I need to get away from this place. But first I'm digging you the graves I should've, this letter's going in yours. Thomas is helping dig, and after having that ceremony I should've had years ago, we're leaving. All I can say now is that I love you, and I hope you're happy, and that I hope you can forgive me for being wrong, and doing wrong, leaving you to become a part of some sham government in a world so far away form yours...

Your Husband,
-James

Basic Logistics. To manage an empire, you need to have a huge amount of infrastructure to keep the fucker from falling apart. Also, if you look at the map, a lot of people did conquer a lot of land. Jafar's Sultanate of Agrabah, which I suggest being an earlier entry, has all of northern Africa, the Middle East, Persia, and portions of modern-day Russia if my geography matches up. The Huns control half of east Asia, and Yzma owns more than half of South America. Also, Chernabog would've just replaced conquered areas with the civs that he wanted there, destroying anyone who lived there at the time because he doesn't give a single, solitary fuck.

Then why is Atlantis a thing? They appear to have a pretty good life rather free of suffering and they barely sell shit to other nations for fear of retaliation from advanced tech. Jafar apparently is trying to make Agrabah a decent place. Alameda's land would cause a lot more suffering in the hands of Facilier. Yzma wasn't given enough character to be known to cause great amounts of suffering to the common man, only that she doesn't care. MAXIMUM SUFFERING doesn't make fucking sense if it isn't at the absolute max when a god capable of pulling entire empires through time and space is trying to achieve it. If Chernobyl is as evil as we say he is then he could be doing a lot better unless the god of evil is also subject to the Disney rule of stupid villains in which case, he needs more fucking lore.

Persuasion: 5
Insight: 4
Linguistics 3 (human, morse code, mammals)
Stealth: 4
Academics: 3

--Traits--
Creepy Crawly: One free rank in Intimidation, size is never a problem when Intimidatin
Flight: Whether an incredible jump or actual wings, you possess the ability to stay airborne pretty much indefinitely
Absolutely Insignificant: +2 on Stealth rolls, and another +2 against Humans.
Quick-Legged: +2 to Prevent Harm checks.
Natural Weapons: +2 to Brawl

Trussssst me!: +2 to Deceit rolls if the target actively distrusts the speaker.

--Powers--
Achilles Heel: Identify one target enemy. You are able to spot a crippling weak point. All allied attacks against this enemy get +2 to cause a physical Strike.
Earwig: If you are close to an unaware enemy you can spend a Will point to attempt a Social Attack or Persuasion roll without revealing yourself.

--Ideals--
Who needs muscles when you have smarts and wit?
No need to draw attention. Sneaky sneaky gets it done.
DON'T CALL ME A COCKROACH.

Also searching for a better name for Earwig. There is an expression for planting a nagging doubt or suspicion in my first language that literally translates to "putting a flea in your ear" but I'm not really sure.

They likely do fight border wars with their neighbors. However, if you look at the map, their neighbors are:
1Jafar, who could fuck them up if he wanted to expand into Spain, but he wouldn't because it would be a logistic nightmare if he rules from the Middle East, but if you fuck with him, he can wreck you. (Most powerful sorcerer in the world)
2. Kingdom of the Cauldron: undying soldiers can fuck you up
3. Fae: they appear to be fighting them right now.
4. Olympus: Hades has godly power

I was thinking about how physical strikes and mental strikes could go on alternate strike tracks. It would mean you can either talk somebody to death or just stab them and have different kinds of victory types.

Physical Victory: Enemy defeated. KO, ded, ran away.
Mental Victory: Demoralized, paralyzed from cognitive dissonance, in state of shock from being told plaid and checkers don't mix.

The only downside I currently see is potential health bloating.

I'm pretty sure we've already had this discussion.
We decided that separate physica/mental strikes is fucking retarded, if I recall. Because they are.
>>

Maybe they stack together and it's the last one that matters?
>>
>>36273182
I think they should stack/only have one track because the more physical damage you've taken, the more you are likely to run away/look for alternatives to fighting/surrender.
Also, from a mechanical perspective, separating them would remove the ability of physical and social characters to fight together on one boss.

There hasn't been much talk about Olympia's situation on the ground other than what I've written about through Lazarus. Idea: instead of separating animal languages by species group, we separate them by region. This explains all the animals in The Jungle Book talking to each other in the same language. Hey guys, I kinda missed the last thread, what's going on--

>POLLS, POLLS ERRYWHERE
>TIME STREAM DISCUSSION
>Apparently done mechanics being re-discussed

Awwww hell. That's some catching up to do, all right....

As for Cherinibogog shaping the world, what if....

What if even he has to obey some rules? The Old Rulea of the universe itself, beyond him and God that every above-gods being must obey? And obe of those rules is that there can not be a reality of pure evil, just as there cannot be one of pure good.

So he was forced to bring some good, some glimpse into the new world. It became a game, too: after all, the despair is bigger when it comes from the broken pieces of hope. Maybe letting that hope have places to grow could lead to MAXIMUM SUFFERING once it got crushed by evil.

But even as he plays the game of evil, he can't stop it from rising himself. Chernie may only take matters into his own hands if they challenge him first. That's a Rule.

So said Walt
>>
>>36274063
I assume we're talking about Genie before he was freed from the lamp, when he could actually grant wishes and was nigh-omnipotent, other than the guidelines he lay down.

Once Aladdin freed him, he wasn't as strong. His magic was on par with a powerful sorcerer, but he couldn't immediately grant wishes anymore. Genie Jafar, on the other hand, was still both the most powerful sorceror and the most powerful genie.

I really do apologize for writing so many songs about Sverd. I can't help it, it's a natural reflex like when the doctors hit your knee with that fucking hammer thing.

Sing to the tune of “God help the Outcasts” – The Hunchback of Notre Dame, 1996
SVERD
I don’t know if You can even hear me
Lately I have wondered if you’re there
All I know is no one seems to listen
To an honest prayer
Though I know that I am but a mortal
And that I have no right to speak to You
Still I look upon our globe and wonder
Is there something more that I could do?

God help the outcasts
Stifled from their birth
I ask for you to show them all the mercy
That they do not find on earth
God help all people
It’s clear we need You still
And should God not help the outcasts
Then I suppose I will

PRAYING CROWD
I ask for wealth
I ask for fame
I ask for freedom from our eternal reigns
I ask for love
I can posses
I ask for God and his Angels to bless
Me

SVERD
I ask for nothing
But for my own strength
And yet I know so many
Who need you more than I
Give me strength to help all people
The poor and downtrod
I swear that they are worthy
Before the eyes of God
For if God won’t help the outcasts
Then I know what I must do

I agree. The only rule Chernobog must abide is that unless challenged, he can not directly attack the Party. He may act behind the scenes, corrupt and twist peoples, but he may not directly attack the PCs in any way or form, not even through his demon minions.
>>
>>36273932
No. Ghosts speak the languages they did before. To contact them, you need to roll Occult
>>
So, Ventriloquism is now a Language.

Also, from now on we keep track of how we got each Strike, but they all still add up together.
>>
>>36274322

Agreed.

>>36273847

Do we use this rule? Because it really explains how the animals are all talking with each other without taking a fuckload of points in Linguistics.
>>
>>36274322
Can 'spirit' still be used for talking to the trees and whatnots?
>>
>>36274342
>keep track of how you gained each strike

That changes absolutely nothing, since only the last strike determines how you're defeated and strikes are an abstraction, but okay. What strange need to add complexity, we have.
>>
>>36274420

I just got here, and it's hard to navigate through that poll-forest on my phone

Which mechanics changrd since the second playtest?
>>
>>36274395

A good question.

Do you want to make a case for it?

>>36274420

Well, this way we know what you can remove with Science, what you can remove with Persuasion and what we can remove with Occult, maybe?

It's not really more work: when you take note of having being hit, you also record what hit you. It's easy peasy.
>>
Can someone explain why Ventriloquism is a language? It isn't a new method of communicating, like French or Morse Code, but rather a trick that you learn to use to deceive people into thinking your voice came from a different place than it did.
>>
Random Fluff Idea:

One of the Imperial Atlantean Republic's primary defensive measures is the ability of Kidagakash, the Crystal Heart, to keep the island of Atlantis itself hidden from the world at large and perhaps even from Ursula specifically.

In order to lead them home again, every Atlantean vessel has a crystal-tech instrument mounted on the navigation console beside the compass that is attuned to the Crystal Heart instead of the Earth's magnetic field, pointing the way toward Atlantis rather than toward magnetic North.

Atlantean Military Protocol states that these devices and any actual latitudinal and longitudinal coordinates indicating the way to the home island are NEVER to be shared with any non-Atlantean for any reason, and the need for secrecy is what has kept the Atlantean Fleet one composed almost entirely of submarines rather than easily tracked surface vessels.
>>
>>36274473

It's not really a Language: you just learn this new trick the same way you would learn a Language.

It also makes sense: if you spend a lot of time learning how to be a ventriloquist you're also going to pick a lot of things on how to read lips and stuff.
>>
>>36274395
That'd still be occult. Language only works for something that can communicate, whether verbally or vocally, on its own. You just need to know a language to know what it is saying.
>>
>>36274469
>2 new ways to be healed, reducing Science's already thin list of uses.
>completely invalidates a class power
>not more complex

Maybe you should try to understand the mechanics before you alter them
>>
>>36274519
Learning a language isn't learning how to read lips, It's learning a whole new lexicon of words and grammar rules. It's a wholly intellectual task. Learning to throw your voice and talk without moving your lips is a primarily physical one, based on vocal dexterity. If anything, I'd roll it as either Deceit or even Music

>>36274523

If you just 'understand' nature, that would probably be Occult.

i honestly dont understand the whole "chernabog did it" mentality going on. as an expy of the devil who cant even stand the light of day, hes should be weaker than those villains that are out and out gods both because it makes sense for the characters, and because if chernabog was so strong then why isnt everything under his control? i guess i just prefer a relative parity between the villains rather than there being one "biggest bad"

>>
>>36274836
I wasn't thinking of this as some sort of Good vs. Evil thing, just as a crazy conflict that players could be caught in the middle of and as a way to make Ursula not the most powerful being alive (Seas are pretty big)
>>
>>36274796
Because, if Chernobog didn't exist, no one would have won. He purposely changed history to fuck over the Heros, giving him power

>>36274835

No - in fact, the only equipment I have so far is for combat. But you're right, maybe I'm wanting to boost my skill too much - it's sitting pretty at 5.
But since horseriding is pretty much his thing (though he doesn't have Ride 'Em), besides being a combat monster, I figured I might sniff out some items to boost it a teensy bit.
>>
>>36274831
but it would make more sense for a more neutral give no fucks villains to be stronger so they sort of enforce the stalemate by their own existences and to give a reason for chernabog to be a sort of subtle corrupter, when if anyone who actually watched his little video would notice isnt his m.o. when he actually is the top dog.

no but what im getting at is that in a system where cthulhu is at the top, cthulhu goes around actively raping things now that he doesnt have to sleep because the stars are right, but when azototh is at the top its basically a free for all if you get what im saying. im not saying chernabog shouldnt be the evil power lurking in the darkness, but that he's lurking in the darkness because he cant punch out the omnipotent genie and his buddy the god of death. the reason something as malevolent as chernabog (or cthulhu) are whispering is because they arent the most powerful beings in the setting. otherwise they would turn the setting into the eternal plane of "everything is constantly being mind raped" rather than hope someone looks directly at them first

We have to sort this out: Genie Jafar or Most Powerful Sorcerer Jafar?
I think the second one is fine, because it puts him at the top of the sorcerer-kings without making him leaps and bounds ahead of everyone else. Also, if he is a genie, Jafar has to work through a puppet and shit, and that's not what you want from a Sorcerer-King. On top of that, he was tricked into becoming a genie by Aladdin, and that is how he was defeated, so if he wasn't beaten he isn't a genie.

I think that particular story was resolved by Jafar just not taking Aladdin's bait and staying the world's most powerful sorcerer and hoarding that last wish
>>
>>36275400

>>36275485
Sorcerer-king. He's just an immensely powerful one due to control of the Lamp. Making him an unrestrained Genie wold put him at the same power level as Chernabog, if not higher.

>>36275136
A lot of the rumor mill stuff is missing. Don't know if that was intentional.
>>
>>36275485
Yes, that's been the agreement for a while. It seems that in the Aladdinverse, being trapped in a lamp is just a part of what genies are (since the genie doesn't seem able to ignore the spirit of a wish).
>>
>>36274915
>more neutral give no fucks villains to be stronger so they sort of enforce the stalemate by their own existence
Thats exactly what Chernobog is. He makes sure the HK can only spread so far. He stops the Titans from leaving greece. He stops Elsa from freezing over the world. He stops Grimhilde, the Fae and Frollo from wiping each other out

The few people he doesn't havecontrol over, is the Aurora, The Fire Bird, The Chinese Heaven, and the Friends on the Other Side. He keeps the terribleness that exists in a nice little status que.

Its like Dwarf Fortress, except he knows how to cheat, and has decided to make his a fortress a warzone
>>
>>36275557
He could probably exert control over those other powers if he wanted -- it's just they are already doing what he wants.
>>
>>36275540
i dont know, i think it would be a both good in setting reason for him not trying to expand considering he's an incredibly ambitious megalomaniac, and a way to actually beat him since the difference between "most powerful sorcerer" and "omnipotent genie" is moot when both of them can squash a player character
>>
>>36275611
Being a genie makes him bound to a lamp and forced to grant wishes. He really couldn't be a king like that. Also, omnipotence would make him just take over the whole world.
>>
>>36275611
He is trying to expand. It's just all the people he's against are just as powerful -- he's run out of conquerable space.

But thats not what Chernobog wants. He wants his stories of Triumph, of woe, of success and failure. He wants the Heros to win, to defeat the villains, to get them feeling good. Then, he watches as they either twist themselves into villains or crushes them like gnats. He is not just the puppet master: he is the director and audience.

Besides, whos bigger than the guy who is controls the powers of love and friendship ?

Welcome to game creation threads -- though given some of the REALLY STUPID decisions this thread, expect to see us debating the rest of the core, already decided -repeatedly - mechanics soon.
>>

That seems about right, if you add in crunching like mad as well. I wish I could have contributed more to this thread, but work and the timeline debate seem to have put me through the wringer.

>Some really stupid decision this thread

Wait, what?
There was a bunch of unneeded debate and that one totally useless physical/mental thing but other than that we pretty much maintained status quo, just got the formal opinion for it.

>hay guise lets make mental and physical strikes a different thing, even though we decided not to in thread seven!

I'm going to be ignoring that decision entirely tomorrow.

Well, every time a new group of people come in, they bring in good ideas and bad. There are a bunch of new anons and namefags producing great stuff at a very quick rate, and then there's also a bunch of new people bitching about decisions that were made in the first ten threads. It happens, and I just hope that the good natured folks have enough patience to ride out the dissidents

Right. There have been a number of great new pieces of fluff and some thoughtful discussion too. We just have to take the good along with the bad and be patient as new contributors get brought up to speed.

The split strike system was still on the wiki.

I just removed it

Speaking of new fluff.
