THE YEAR IS 1914 EC
THE FIRST EUROPAN WAR HAS JUST BEGUN

It's been more than a day since the last time you slept. It was excitement - not anxiety - that kept you up through the night, and while you were able to use the time productively to sort out some last-minute affairs, the exhaustion is beginning to catch up. You tried to take a nap, but something always jolts you right awake the moment you're about to fall asleep.

It's the sound of the military convoy, mostly. The rumbling engines. The car bouncing off a hole or a bump. Soldiers barking out orders. The nervous whispers of your fellow passengers. It turns out the sound of war isn't just gunshots and explosions.

Everyone knew this was coming. The Industrial Revolution gave people more, but it also gave them a taste for more. More comfort. More money. More power. More ragnite. There's still plenty of everything to go around - for now - but everyone's planning ahead for the inevitable shortage. Everyone's looking to carve out their own little piece of more.

Everyone knew there would be war. The last few doubts died along with the Crown Prince of the Autocratic East Europan Imperial Alliance.

The two major powers of Europa, the Autocratic East Europan Imperial Alliance and the Atlantic Federation, are now eager for another chance to devour each other. Stuck between the two titans, the Principality of Gallia and the Kingdom of Fhirald prepare themselves to do whatever it takes to secure their independence and, most importantly, to survive.

Beneath the surface, all struggle for the ultimate prize: Europa's supply of ragnite.

In the last few days, thousands of men and women all over Europa joined the military out of patriotic fervour or duty or pride. Tens of thousands more are likely to be conscripted once the war is in full swing.

Rather than sit at home and wait for the inevitable, you decided to join the war from the beginning. You decided to stand alongside your comrades to protect your home.

You are…

You are Baron - now Second Lieutenant - Renard de Velde of the Principality of Gallia. Like all Gallians, you received military training, but unlike most, you weren't satisfied with joining the militia. You joined the military full-time and have just received your commission as an officer of the Gallian military.

You stifle a yawn, drawing a nervous chuckle from the man sitting next to you. He looks at you, then to his feet, then back to you.

"So, huh," he says, "I guess I'm not the only one who couldn't sleep last night, right?"

"Probably not," you say. Everyone else in the truck looks as tired as you. "I had some business to take care of with my family."

"Yeah, my parents are still around, and I've got an older brother and two younger sisters," your companion says. "My older brother's already in the military. He didn't want me to sign up, but the way things are looking…"

He looks at his feet again, then his eyes dart towards the other two passengers and the driver. He taps his rifle nervously. He's not carrying grenades or a first aid kit, so he's probably a scout. That's where the military sends soldiers without special skills or training. Anyone can point a gun and pull the trigger.

>(1/2)
>>
>>36272250
You pat the man on the shoulder.

"We all need to do our part for Gallia," you say. "Besides, soldiers who join up voluntarily get better pay than conscripts."

"The pay does look pretty good," the man says. "Especially those bounties. Do you really think the military is going to pay up?"

"They damn well better." You laugh. "I'm happy to do my duty, but I expect the government to uphold their end of the bargain."

The conversation trails off and you turn away from the man to confirm your papers one last time. It wouldn't do to lose your commission just because something's wrong with the paperwork.

> New Personnel! Renard de Velde (Sniper): Range 30, Accuracy 30, Evasion 30, Movement 0, Damage 5, Defense 1, Health 10

You put your training to good use and joined the snipers. Your physical endurance isn't much - honestly, conscripts are tougher than you on average - but you know your way around the battlefield and you know how to line up a shot.

You lean back and close your eyes. Once again, sleep slowly creeps up on you. Then you hear something. Something you haven't heard all morning. You open your eyes to see the lead truck explode in a ball of blue flames, followed quickly by the second truck in the convoy. You curl up, bracing yourself for what you know is coming, but you're fortunate. Something explodes right in front of the truck, flipping it over. The rest of the passengers scream in fear and through the windows, you see nothing but fire.

The truck crashes into the road, sending your consciousness into darkness for a brief moment. You take shallow breaths, wary of the smoke, but the truck doesn't seem to be on fire.

Not that it matters.

You look at the other passengers. The blood. The lacerations. The burns. The twisted bones. Their eyes, either closed or staring blankly ahead. It's clear you're the only survival.

You feel your body next, hoping everything is alright. Most of your body hurts, but you can still move your limbs and it doesn't look like you're bleeding anywhere. You're bruised, but not beaten.

You grab your rifle and crawl out of the truck. There's nothing more you can do for your deceased comrades, but something like this can't be a random attack. This is an ambush. The enemy is near.

>Look around. You need to find the enemy.
>Walk around the convoy. There might be other survivors… or enemies.
>Hide somewhere. You do your best work from cover.

You look around the carnage for a place to hide. The convoy was going up a countryside dirt road, and for someone with your kind of training, that's more than enough.

You crouch down and run as quickly as you can towards the nearest field. You slip in, careful not to disturb the first few rows of crops. You lie down and place your rifle in a small opening between the crops. You have enough space to look out, but no one should be able to see you unless they look directly at the muzzle of your gun and give you a perfect headshot. The sun is behind you, so the light won't even reflect off your scope.

You're safe, but you don't know where the enemy is, or even if you have backup.

>Look around for survivors. You might not be alone.
>Look for the enemy. If there are survivors, that's the best way to keep them safe.

If we had a way to communicate it would be worthwhile to look for survivals, but since we don't, it's best to due what we are equipped for and shoot enemies.

Panzerfaust
>>
>>36273499
You look around for hostile forces. If someone was on your side of the convoy, they probably would have shot you while you were running, so you focus instead on the farmstead ahead of you.

Most of it is covered on crops, but there's a well in the house's backyard. There are two figures clumsily hiding behind it. Both of them are wearing light Imperial armour.

The one on the left is carrying a standard infantry rifle, but no other special equipment. It must be a scout, here to find the perfect spot for an ambush and confirm the damage afterwards.

The one on the right is also carrying a rifle, but you can also a first aid kit and a bag of tools. It must be the engineer who prepared the explosives for the ambush.

They need to confirm that the attack was successful, so you definitely have time to take one of them out with impunity. They don't know you're there, so they won't be able to avoid the shot.

>Take out the scout. It'll be a problem for you if he starts running.

You take a deep breath and remember your training. You gauge the distance between yourself and the scout and eyeball the wind factor according to the swaying of the crops. You line up your scope at the soldier's mouth, the one place that's exposed and the move it up and left a bit to compensate for environmental factors.

You pull the trigger.

Through your scope, you see the scout's mouth explode with a spray of red blood as he falls back. The engineer hurriedly looks over him, but he doesn't reach for his first aid kit. The bullet must have gone through the soldier's brain stem or the back of his neck. He must be dead.

Realizing the danger he's in, the engineer turns in your general direction.

And pulls out a grenade.

You don't have time for a fancy trick shot, so you point your rifle at the engineer's chest and pull the trigger. His armour's good, but not good enough. The bullet rips through the soldiers as he hurls the grenade, ruining his aim. The grenade lands a few yards away from the man, who falls back, dead as his comrade.

With the scout and the engineer dead, the area is clear. This far from the Gallian-Imperial border, they couldn't have sent more than a small team. They were the only two soldiers here.

You emerge from the fields and walk around the convoy, confirming what you already suspected. You're the only survivor. Everyone else must have died immediately during the ambush.

Next, you move over to the Imperial soldiers. The engineer's corpse suffered some damage from the grenade, but it's not much. The scout didn't suffer any significant damage, apart from your catastrophic shot.

You need to decide what you want to do with the bodies.

>Leave them there. They're not your problem.

Do a quick go over for anything with a name on it. Other stuff is too much effort to return.

Might be nice to scavenge a grenade or two assuming being a sniper doesn't mean we can't carry non class stuff.

You take the soldiers' military equipment and have another look at their bodies for their personal effects. You find their military identification tags easily enough, along with a few tokens. Pictures of family, petty jewelry, that sort of thing. You stuff in the soldiers' respective bags so you can keep track of it. You sling the bags over your shoulder and head towards the general direction of the nearest outpost, leaving the battlefield behind.

You're just past the wrecked husk of the lead truck when two Gallian military trunks drive towards you. The soldiers level their guns at you for a second, but quickly aim their weapons away when they see your uniform. You stand there and wait for the soldiers to disembark and secure the area.

"Sir!" One of the corporals approaches you. "What happened here?"

"We were ambushed by an engineer and a scout." You nod towards the corpses. "They've been taken care. Make sure they receive the same consideration as our own. Have their been other attacks?"

"Not that I know of, sir," the corporal says. "We just checked up on you because the convoy was late. The major had a bad feeling, but… we weren't expecting anything like this."

"We had no reason to," you say. "Can you drive me back to base, or would it be better if I stayed here?"

"I can take you back, sir." The corporal waves you over to one of the trucks. "I assume you'll have plenty to take care of, what with our two other new officers being dead and all."

You sit besides the corporal and drive to the nearest base while the soldiers remain behind to secure the area. Thankfully, you don't encounter any other problems on your way to the base.

The base itself is actually an old farming village with a few refurbished defenses. Most of the civilians are still around, working as makeshift support staff. The good news is, the billeting should be good. Better than a tent village in the wilds, at least.

The gate guards hurriedly wave you through and the corporal drops you off at the garage.

"I can give you a tour if you'd like, sir," he says. "Help you get acquainted."

>"I need to report to the base commander immediately."
>"I'd like to see the armoury first."
>"I'd like to see the training grounds."
>"After that battle, I'd rather just relax somewhere."

"I need to report to the base commander immediately," you say. "He needs to know what happened."

"As you say, sir," the corporal says. "Please follow me."

The corporal leads you through the streets. They're not bustling, but they're not empty either. People are moving around and the stores are still open. You return more than a few glad smiles and waves from people who take notice of your uniform.

The corporal takes you to the town hall. Once a gathering place for villagers, it's now been commandeered by the Gallian army as a temporary command post. Soldiers and adjutants rush about, tending to the war effort in their own way.

"Major Lenier, I have news about the convoy!" The corporal announces your presence and the staff parts to make way for you. "It was attacked, but one of the officers survived."

You walked towards the major's table at the front of the town hall and salute.

"Second Lieutenant Renard de Velde of the Gallian Army, reporting for the duty, Major!"

"At ease." The major motions for everyone to get back to work. "I'm Major Charles Lenier, I'll be your commanding officer while you're here. What do you have to report?"

"The convoy was ambushed, sir," you say. "It seems someone put mines or bombs on the road. There was an Imperial scout and an engineer overseeing the attack. They've been taken care of." You pat your rifle. "Unfortunately, I'm the only survivor. The other men you sent out should be securing the site as we speak."

The major sighs and grabs a few pages from the piles of paperwork around him.

"They must have a small camp nearby. Either that, or they have sympathizers. Sergeant LaCroix!" He calls out to one of the staff. "Find Lieutenant Rosaire. Tell him to meet up with DuLac's squad and return here immediately. No one leaves the base until we've prepared a scouting mission for enemy elements in the area. As for you…"

Even if we do most of our work solo, chances are we're going to be part of a squad so that there's a team to take advantage of our stealth sniping shenanigans.

We're regular army at the moment, not spec ops. Once some officers get wind of our upcoming incredible exploits I'm sure we'll be on for some behind enemy line stuff though.
>>
>>36275977
He signs one of the papers and stamps it.

"Congratulations, First Lieutenant de Velde," he says. "Since your predecessor has just perished, I must ask you to take up his duties. Since the reinforcements we were expecting have also perished and I'm not desperate enough to conscript the locals yet, I'm afraid your command will have to be quite small. A team of four, including you, at most."

"Ah, thank you, sir." You take your new orders and salute. "I'll serve Gallia to the best of my abilities.

"Good." The major hands you a few folders. "Here are the soldiers who haven't been assigned yet.

SCOUTS

Ibon Noiret: Ibon was the apprentice groundskeeper at an aristocrat's estate. His employer joined the military along with most of his family, leaving Ibon mostly unemployed. Having nothing better to do, he decided to make the most of his situation and joined the war effort as well, hoping to make good use of his survival skills.
Potential - Survivalist: Ignores all environmental penalties.

Vanessa Kreuss: Vanessa joined the military when she couldn't find any other work. Having none of the required training or talent - and being a Darcsen - she became a scout since the job required the least qualifications. In spite of this, she has not run away or even thought about deserting and fully plans on staying with the army
Potential - Determination: When she fails an action, she gains a +15 bonus to her next roll. This effect is not cumulative.

Therese Greystone: Therese is part of the rising capitalist class. Her father is a ragnite prospector who, after finding several rich ragnite deposits and carefully investing his money, became one of the titans of the imperial industry. Therese accompanied her father on many of his expeditions and frankly prefers nature to the city life.
Potential - Nature Lover: Gains +10 to movement and evasion while in the wilds.

Vincent "Silver" Ashton: Vincent was a thief, fence and small-time thug until the day he got caught. In exchange for a pardon, he was allowed to join the Gallian military. He doesn't care much about the war one way or the other, although he would prefer to find less dangerous work than soldiering or thieving once the whole thing is over.
Potential - Urban Combat: Gains +10 to movement and evasion in urban areas.

Nette Wilar: After her parents died in an accident, Nette became a seamstress in order to look after her five younger siblings. With the Imperial invasion looming over the horizon, she decided to join the army. Although it had been several years since the last time she'd held a rifle, her mother's training stuck with her and she qualified as a sniper. She's arranged for most of her pay to be forwarded to her family.
Potential - Penetration: Damage ignores defense.

Ballard Craston: Ballard's calm temperament makes it difficult for him to deal with frenzied combat, so he became a sniper, a job that benefits from his patience and his high level of combat awareness. He has a great talent for spotting danger before it strikes and is quite protective of his allies.
Potential - Countersnipe: Gains a pre-emptive attack against anyone who makes a stealth attack against an ally.

Ernestine Whitefields: Ernestine's family is part of a nomadic Darcsen tribe. She learned how to hunt in order to obtain meat and melts, but she eventually grew tired of the nomadic lifestyle. She joined the Gallian military in hopes of finding a home to call her own one day.
Potential - Bounty Hunter: Gains +5 to damage and +10 to accuracy against elite units and officers.

Jonas Hunter: Jonas had just started his career as a teacher when he was drafted. He showed some talent for the rifle and was praised for his talent for training others and pointing out their strengths and weaknesses. He was sent to the front so that he could gain more first-hand experience with live combat.

Clara Rossmann: Her rules a duchy near the western frontier of Gallia, but Clara herself is from a branch of the noble family. Augustus Rossmann, the patriarch of the family, was unwilling to obey the Crown's levy of troops for a conflict that did not concern his territory, but Clara offered to answer the royal summons on her family's behalf in order to secure better prospects for her parents and younger brothers.
Potential - Born Leader: Increases the effective level of the squad by 1.

Karl Schreiner: Karl is from a family of commoners. Like most children, he came to idolize the mighty knights of the Gallia, but unlike most children, he devoted himself to harsh martial training for many years. His determination was rewarded when he one a small local tournament held to entertain a visiting colonel. The colonel offered Karl formal training in Lanseal.
Potential - Martial Determination: Every 5 points of health damage increases his Range, Accuracy, Evasion and Movement by 1.

Paxton Arrold: Paxton is a sellsword in every sense of the word. He comes from a family of blacksmiths and has been helping to run his father's store since he was a child. He joined the military partly out of patriotism, but mostly out of respect for his customers, many of whom are or were in the army at some point in their lives.
Potential - Peerless Craftsmanship: His sword deals d12 damage rather than d10.

Jetje Leifstel: Jetje is the current successor to a prestigious and respected fencing school. Although she has only ever participated in sports tournaments, she did well enough during the enlistment exams to qualify as a military fencer. This has somewhat alienated her from her instructors and peers, many of whom have come to accept that the age of the sword is over and who prefer to use fencing for sportsmanship rather than bloodshed.

Cavell Bloodboar: The prestige of Cavell's family, which had maintained ties to the aristocracy of Gallia for centuries, began to decline with the rise of industrialism. In order to salvage his family's fortune, Cavell threw himself into science and research. He has achieved some respectable successes and now wishes to know more about warfare in order to move into weapons development, which he foresees will become a very lucrative field.
Potential - Bomb Disposal: Gains +15 to evasion against explosive attacks.

Doctor Orton Estland: Doctor Estland has been a military doctor for well over a decade. He was recently in charge of a medical hospital, but resigned from his post in order to take on a field position. He has seen many soldiers died because they had reached him too late for treatment to be effective and now wishes to prevent and stabilize injuries before they become serious.
Potential - Preventive Medicine: All squad members gain 5 health.

Doctor Shermann Heisenberg: Doctor Heisenberg recently retired from the Imperial University after a lifetime of very productive research into ragnite and engineering in general. He's well aware that he only has a few years left in him, so he decided to join the military for the sake of protecting his children and grandchildren, who have more of a future than he does.
Potential - Science!: Grenade attacks ignore the target's defense.

Nina Stroheim: Nina joined the military in order to pay for studies. Now a certified nurse, she was asked to pay back her debt to the motherland by joining the military. She's still inexperienced and has trouble dealing with the rigours of combat, but she becomes quite professional when delivering first aid.
Potential - Emergency Treatment: Gains +15 to movement and evasion when delivering treatment to a wounded patient.

You know I wonder... does that bonus work even if he get healed? That could make him even more of a monster if healing doesn't stop the effect in combat
>>
>>36276963
It only works when he's wounded.

Changing vote to Karl.
>>
>>36276963
Rules as written atm it would work like that. Pretty sure Eurowar would change that once it became obvious how gamebreaking it would be

You give three of the folders to the Major.

"This looks like a good pick," you say.

"I'll have them assigned under your command promptly," the Major says. "In the meantime, feel free to get acquainted with the base. The corporal can show you around I'm sure. You're dismissed for now."

"Sir!"

You salute and leave the major to his work, most likely planning the scouting missions. Those two imperials you killed must have had some sort of shelter or supply line.

"Where would you like to go next, sir?" The corporal asks. "The training fields, or the armoury?"

>"Show me the training facilities. I want to keep my team in top shape."
>"Show me the armoury. I want a better idea of our logistics."

Figured. Just wanted a clarification. Guess that means that if he is healed in combat, that bonus effect goes away too

"Show me the armoury," you say. "I want a better idea of our logistics."

"It's… ah… well…" The corporal seems at a lost for words. "I suppose you'll see. Follow me."

The armoury, as it happens, is an old barn. That's to be expected, to a certain extent. It's not like this place would have dedicated military depots. The military has to make do with what it has on hand.

What you don't expect is the crowd of soldiers yelling out numbers and an old man in a militia uniform presiding over the mob.

"30 ducats!" "40!" "45!" "80!"

"Sold!" The militiaman points at one of the soldiers and yells. "Sold to the gentleman for 80 ducats!" He looks up and his eyes meet yours. "Now if you'll excuse me, it seems I have a new client."

The old man finishes whatever his transaction is and nonchalantly walks towards you.

"Welcome to our humble armoury," he says. "My name's Sergeant Bernard Gaul. I'm technically a retired militiaman, but so long as my services are needed…"

"This doesn't look like any armoury I've ever seen." In fact, it looks like most of his supplies are random wares. "It does remind me of a few-"

"Intrepid merchants." Gaul's tone is quite insistent. "I provide a variety of services. Since this is only a small base and we're not on the front lines, we don't get priority for equipment. I know who to write to in order to facilitate the process. I'm not just talking about standard supplies, either. I can get your first-rate equipment, if you'd like. I heard you got some money from your kills. I doubt it's enough for a new weapon, but I might be able to get you some parts. Just so I can call you one of my customers."

>You currently have 165 ducats. You can afford the following:
>Custom Stock: +1 to Rifle Accuracy (100DCT)
>Improved Scope Magnification: +1 to Sniper Rifle Accuracy (100DCT)
>Serrated Blade 1: +1 to Swords Damage (100DCT)
>Buy nothing.

>Upgrades apply to all weapons.
>>
>>36277386
>Custom Stock: +1 to Rifle Accuracy (100DCT)

Let's buff up our scout. We're already quite good at hitting things and the damage on the fencer should be decent already.
>>
>>36277386
>Upgrades apply to all weapons.
Does that mean all weapons of that type in the squad get the upgrade?

If that's the case
>Custom Stock: +1 to Rifle Accuracy (100DCT)
Since both scouts and engineers use them.

otherwise
>Improved Scope Magnification: +1 to Sniper Rifle Accuracy (100DCT)
>>
>>36277386

I believe that buffs both the engineer and scout.

>Acquired Custom Stocks (+1 to Rifle Accuracy)

"Can you get me some custom stocks?" You ask. "I don't want my scouts and engineers getting sore shoulders."

"Not a problem!" Gaul says. "I know a guy who can do woodcarving. Just sign me a promissory note and I'll have one of my boys bring your team over for fitting. It shouldn't take too long."

"Thanks, I appreciate it."

You fill out the paperwork and Gaul goes off to do his thing. Whatever that is.

"I suppose that just leaves the training grounds," you say to the corporal. "Let's go."

"This way, sir."

The training grounds are the village's usual festival grounds. There's a lot of open space and some permanent buildings to store equipment. Some soldiers are doing their daily run, while others are lifting weights.

The most impressive part, however, is the drill sergeant. The man is simply massive. He towers over everyone else in the field, including you, and looking at the size of his arms, you're quite certain he could wrestle a goddamn bull down if he wanted to. The minute he sees you, he snaps to a crisp salute.

Yep Gunther is the Father of Gallian tank warfare, development, and tactics.

"Lieutenant de Velde, I heard you were coming," he says. "Sergeant Paul Malbridge. I'm in charge of keeping the troops fit."

"A pleasure to meet you, sergeant." You return his salute. "Can you tell me more about the training here?"

"Mostly, I just keep people in shape, but it's not just physical," he says. "Other times, the troops come together to discuss their combat experience and share war stories. That's how they learn new tricks. If you come here often enough, you might learn a thing or two as well."

"I'll keep that in mind, sergeant."

>You can spend experience to level up your classes. Leveling up a class applies to every member of that class and increases all its attributes.
>Bernard has two classes: Sniper and Officer. The Officer class is special. Levels in Officer grant a bonus to all squad members. They also provide Command Points which can be used to give Orders.

>You currently have 732XP. How would you like to spend it.
>Officer (800 to level 2)

Better dodging is the best way to help out a squaddie who gets in a bad situation and scouts are just the most versatile, got a feeling we may rely on our one a bit.

You decide to hold off on training until your team is properly assembled, but you decide to linger around the shooting drills. You know how to shoot, but learning how to direct others is a useful skill to have and the sergeant provides a good example.

As the training winds down, it's time for you to have dinner and to meet your new subordinates.

"Corporal, where do soldiers usually eat?" You ask.

"All over, sir," he says. "Some of us who are good in the forest also hunt. If you're thinking about your squad, there's a public house near the market. I think I've seen most of them there."

"Thank you, corporal. You've been extremely helpful."

It's time for you to take up your first real command position.

Okay, I'm calling it a night for now. I got through all the basic stuff, so this is a good spot. My twitter account is set up @EuroWarQM and the next thread will be... today, actually. Sometime around 7PM EST.

I've got the squad votes tallied, but I'll have a confirmation vote at the start of the next thread to make sure the team has /tg/'s approval.

If you have any comments, just leave them here and I'll read them when I can.

Thanks for playing!
