Welcome to Banished Quest!
You take the role of a young mage labeled a criminal by his people and cast out into the wider world. In the last thread you took up the role of wingman for a friend and then took a bath.

You're not truly asleep; though your mind wanders and dreams you're still vaguely aware of your surroundings and most certainly conscious. Your thoughts flit rapidly from one thing to the next; for a time you contemplate your recent unbanishment but only moments later you're caught up considering the possible combinations of elements you'd read about in Grandmaster Rostam's journal. Then your thoughts drift absentmindedly to your recent adventurers, Zahak, and your companions.

You find yourself hoping you can serve as a suitable surrogate parent for your young dragon. Already, he seems quite powerful. You worry that at some point in the near future you may find yourself surpassed. Hopefully, dragons bear the same respect towards their parents that most other creatures do, and would be willing to defer to their judgment even if they are more powerful. On the other hand, you're forced to wonder whether or not a dragon ever really has to worry about its parents being less powerful than itself. They do not seem to weaken with age, quite the opposite in fact.

Your thoughts are interrupted by a loud splash and a grateful sigh. Cracking an eye open, you see that a woman has joined you. She's attractive, in a motherly sort of way. With wider hips and a bigger bust than most of your kind. You'd guess that she's had a number of children over the course of her life, Monks are allowed to marry and bear children after all. There seems to be a certain something about her that demands respect, you can tell offhandedly that she's quite magically powerful, though this alone would not be of particular note. You find your eye drawn to the three long scars which stretch along the left side of her face, the result of some beast's claws no doubt.

Her greying hairs put her age somewhere in the neighborhood of two hundred or so. She looks good for her age, all things considered. You're preparing to settle in and return to your daydreaming, but she speaks before you're able. “I've heard that you were the last to see the previous Varistha alive; tell me, did he happen to leave anything to you? A chest, perhaps?”

Her tone is innocent enough, and she does not seem outwardly curious. If anything, she appears wholly disinterested, she's not even looking at you. Rather, she appears to be half-asleep for all intents and purposes; her head rested against the ledge that runs along her edge of the bath and her eyes closed. However, you're not entirely sure you can trust the woman. You can't recall ever seeing her around the temple, though you admittedly haven't been the most social creature lately.

>No, nothing of that sort. Why does she ask?
>Who's she to question you?

>>36275210
Can we wager a guess at her identity when we introduce ourselves?
>>
>>36275204
We're in public baths.
>>
>I don't recall the bath being mixed style.
>>
>>36275282
That's actually the norm, while larger public bathouses will have separate areas for men and women, smaller and more private baths (like the ones in this temple) are usually mixed.
>>
>>36275231
200 might not be special, but we know that the one replacing the last varisha is around 200 years in age. to top it on they are a women, and are powerful.
Plus she knows about the chest which would suggest that she moved into his office.
>>
Depending on how soon we're leaving, could we have Prof&Chrys pass their Vatis test so we can have a party?
>>
>>36275360
It doesn't necessarily mean she moved into his office yet, she could have just visited the shah.
>>
>>36275395
True, but the only ones that can visit the shah would be high ranking priest, especially after his recent death i would assume.
>>
You frown. “You know, it's rude to just start asking questions without introducing yourself. I can't recall ever seeing you around the temple, nor have I heard of any recent arrivals. So who are you?”

She sits up a little straighter and faces you for once, grinning. “Varistha Riya Yilmaz. I've been in El-Amin for the past several decades working with the Amatya and serving as his advisor. With the death of Sehzade, I've been called back to focus on the running of this temple. When I took possession of my quarters this morning from the soon-to-be-departing Padishah Kadir, I found a certain chest missing. Its contents are quite important and I'd rather not begin my tenure by announcing they've vanished into the ether.”

You bow as best you can from a seated position, which isn't particularly well. “It's an honor to make your acquaintance, Varistha. Unfortunately, I can't say I've seen any sign of a chest, nor have I heard that it's been missing. I did notice that it was conspicuously absent during my most recent meetings with Shah Kadir. Perhaps you might ask him about its whereabouts?”

She hums quietly while she considers what you've said. Eventually, she speaks. “When I spoke with the Varistha regarding the chest he seemed to have no idea what it was I was talking about. Thus I'm forced to assume that it vanished before the Shah took up residence in the Varistha's quarters. Considering then that you were the last to speak with the Varistha before he went off to get himself killed, I find myself with few other sources to question. Are you sure he said nothing about it before his presumed death?”

>No, nothing at all.

That's exactly what I was thinking
>>
“I can't say I recall any mention of a chest. What's so important about it anyway? Why do you so wish to find it?” You're trying to word your statements carefully, and think you're doing an acceptable job of it. You do feel yourself growing a tad nervous, though consciously you realize that there's nothing which could directly link the chest to you save your companion's testimony, and you feel safe in the knowledge that they wouldn't just blab about it to anyone who asked.

The woman hums quietly once more to herself, you think it's some sort of tune though you don't properly recognize it. “It contains all of my predecessor's notes, as well as his memoirs. I was hoping that the knowledge contained within may aid me in these trying times ahead.” She blows out a deep sigh. “Truth be known I've never had much of a head for numbers, nor can I profess to be a great leader. I thought that perhaps the Varistha may have left me some instructions, a guide, anything to help me find my footing.”

Her tone is almost pleading, almost. If you didn't know first hand about the contents of the chest you'd likely find her sympathetic. As it stands, you find the fact that she left out the Prism quite suspicious. Does she not know about the artifact, or is she trying to conceal its existence from you? Would the latter even make sense if she held the suspicion that you are, in fact, in possession of the chest? Is she trying to bait you into saying more than you should?

You nod your head sympathetically. “I'm sure you'll establish yourself well enough, you merely face a trial by fire. Besides, I'm sure you can delegate many of the day-to-day duties required of you to lesser, more qualified monks while you guide the temple in grander matters. Truth be told, I sympathize with you. I've always been more of the big picture sort, rather than than the detail conscious worrier.”

(1/2)
>>
That particular trait has actually gotten you in trouble a fair bit, in the past. Fortunately you're more or less able to force yourself to pay attention when it comes to the little details, lest you end up hurting yourself or someone else by accident. Like that time with at the markets when you tried to filch a candied apple slice from a merchant's stall. You didn't even know the body held that much blood at the time.

The woman sighs, seeming to relent. “I suppose you are right. It is a shame, that such knowledge will be lost to the ages. Hopefully I'll be able to find out what happened to his notes over the course of my tenure here. Sorry to bother you during your bath, Brother Abdul.”

You wave off her apology. “No need to be sorry, Varistha. You mentioned earlier that the Shah will be leaving soon, didn't you?”

She nods. “Yes, he intends to leave at some point today. Last I heard he was headed of the fortress courtyard to rally his troops together and begin the march to El-Amin. Only a two day journey by camel or carriage, but a four day's march from what I understand.”

Yeesh, that's a long time to be walking. Though you suppose that's to be expected of a military life. All soldiers ever seem to do is march, with the occasional bout of fighting to break up an otherwise pleasant stroll through the countryside. Regardless, you seem to have deflected the new Varistha's suspicious questioning, for now.

Even if we're going to be here for a week. Or a few more days, we don't have much time left here.
>>
You finish scraping off the dried blood, dirt, and various other filth you've accumulated over the course of the day's travels and the week's trials. By the time you've scoured your skin raw, there is a visible ring of dirt and grime surrounding you. You quickly cross to the other side of the bath, and finish washing yourself there. Once convinced that you're about as clean as you can get, and once you've rinsed out your hair, you take a moment to wash your clothing.

You start with your pants, as they're the most bloodstained of any of your garments. It's a simple task to force water through the fabric using magic, and in a moment they're as clean and white as the day you bought them. Granted, they've a few more holes in them compared to that day, but they're serviceable. Your robes are less so. Your underrobes at least preserve your modesty, but your Master's robes are... a wreck. They're tattered fragments, glorified rags. You wash them regardless, but they're practically falling apart in your grasp.

Once you've finished with that task you climb out of the water and step past the Varistha to pull yourself onto dry land. You take a moment to dry yourself with magic before making your way into the changing room and getting dressed. Once you've gotten your pants and robes on, you swiftly don your cloak and shove your boots on. Speaking of which, they're also looking a tad trail worned. You may wish to think about buying a new pair soon.

(1/2)
>>
Regardless, you make your way down the steps and to the wing of the building which your party has been relegated to. You find the Temple unusually quiet at this hour. Granted, it is early morning. You imagine most people are still asleep. However, you'll usually encounter at least a few monks going about chores, cleaning this or that. Today, there's nobody.

Hardly your concern, of course. You slip through your door to find everything much as you left it. Zahak slumbers bundled within his burning blanket and your new bedding seems to beckon you to sleep. However, you must deny such temptation. You've too much reading to do.

yeah meant that with asking SK. Since he should know everything with the gadget bot.

You pull your Metal Codex from your cloak and sit down on your bed, gently pulling open the heavy tome and running a finger along the elaborate illustrations. You know, you can't even properly recall the last illuminated manuscript you read, but it was nowhere near this lavish. Most Vatis these days don't see the point in producing tomes so rich with color and paint, as they believe it detracts from the text's overall message. Personally, you wish more books were written in this style. The beauty of the page does much to keep you focused.

You briefly read over the twenty seventh recto page again, just to refresh your memory. The text is flowery, to say the last. It spends a lot of time lauding the qualities of Dhatu, Guardian of the Underworld and From Whom All Wealth Flows. At least, that's how the author titles him. Dhatu is obviously some long ago forgotten god.

You turn the page, and are once more struck by just how rich the illumination is. Gold and the rich blue only produced by lapiz lazuli blanket the page before you. The text itself is almost is interesting. It tells the story of the god Dhatu, how he was born concurrently to the other five Greater Deities; Pani, Surya, Dhatu, Prthvi, and She who is Banished. It recounts his domination of the other various gods of death, until he eventually came to be the sole god remaining dedicated to the concept.

You turn the page, and story continues. It recounts Dhatu's battle with Prthvi to claim the rights to the domain of Wealth. Eventually, Dhatu won out. Thus, when Surya was disemboweled and his entrails dried to weave the fabric of the world from the very thread of his being, Dhatu became the patron of all metals, while Prthvi became the patron of all stones.

You're forced to flip the page once more. One thing you will say about these manuscripts, they don't leave much room for text on any one page. You're barely able to get more than a paragraph each. At least it means the book will be shorter than it appears. Dhatu, according to this tome, settled within his realm to slumber for but a moment, to rest after untold millennia of struggle. Unfortunately, a moment to a god is not a moment to a mortal. It has been thousands of years since Dhatu closed his eyes to the world, and some fear he may be forgotten in his inattentiveness.

Well clearly their fears were justified, you've never heard of Dhatu. You've never even heard the term 'Greater Deities' or that one of the gods was banished. In fact, neither had the Varistha as far as you recall. How long has this book been sitting unread in the library? Did none take interest in it? Is the knowledge contained within perhaps falsified? While the tome is undoubtedly beautiful, you find that it seems to raise more questions than it answers. You can't help but feel like you're missing out on some sort of vital context. Some clue as to its true meaning.

You're standing in a long hallway, illuminated on either sides by troughs of flaming pitch. The walls are carved with images of a great battle, of two four-armed figures battling a much large figure, with a face constructed only of a gaping mouth and two flaming red eyes. You think it might be a warped depiction of the god Surya, come to think of it.
Going along the wall carving, Surya is entrapped by one of the figures in a cage of stone, and then the other figure lashes at it with a blade of ice. The god is cut, and his blood drops from the bars of his stone cage, down onto a dot bellow. You recognize this story, it's the same one you saw in Surya's Temple at the Fortress of Eshnuk. The god with the blade of ice must be Pani, but then who is the other god? You had never heard the story told the way it was depicted here.

This may clear things up, or be a complete shot into an abyss.

We should pay our respects to Dhatu and Prthvi every once in a while. Just as acknowledgment, like "hey, if you're still out there, I think you're a pretty cool dude". If Prthvi and Dhatu seem like righteous dudes based on what we read.

Whilst you're taking a break from reading, you push the book aside and rub your eyes. With an absentminded wave of your hand a candle lights itself, the light serving to alleviate some of the strain you're feeling. That done, you reach into your cloak and withdraw the roughly melon-sized orb of your Gadget-Bot. As soon as it's out of your cloak, it zips out of your hands and assumes a position hovering behind your head. No matter which way you turn you can't quite seem to catch sight of it. Frustrated, you reach back and grab it firmly with both hands.

It's surprisingly difficult to drag the thing in front of you, but as you focus on the task it zips forward of its own volition. You think of it coasting to the right, and it does so. You think of it coasting to the left, and it does so as well. Up, down, diagonally. No matter what direction you bid it move, it swiftly obeys. You're a little confused as to how it manages to read your thoughts without magic, but don't dwell on it.

You bid it zoom close to you, and it does so. In fact it takes your command too far, and ends up bashing you in the head. Not hard enough to leave you concussed, but hard enough to hurt. You urge it back, slightly, and then begin inspecting the thing. There is a large lens on the front, attached to a tube-like protrusion. You assume this is its 'eye' but whether or not, like the Archeota, it can capture images you're uncertain. Frankly, you just don't know much about the thing.

You hold out your cloak and urge the device to enter. It shoots through the air and vanishes inside. That done, you close the cloak. A strange device, certainly. You may wish to have Skull Kid take a look at it at some later date, or perhaps you ought to just let him have it. He'd probably make far better use of it than you're able to.

You pluck the book back up and lay it across your lap, placing your hand flat against the surface of the page. On a whim, you channel just a touch of metal magic into the page. Even with just the barest of vys channeled into the page, the effect is immediate. The ink leaps from the page, twisting gracefully through the air. It slowly takes the shapes of figures acting out the scene described. You see Dhatu, or a figure you presume to be Dhatu. His body is wrought from the blackness of iron, but silver traces his bones and forms the flesh of his six faces. Six arms extend from his shoulder. Two o them are twisted into claws, one melts into a shapeless void, another wields a large, curved sword, and the last two wield some sort of silver trinket you can't quite recognize and a golden ball of... something. It looks like fire, but you're simply not sure.

Around his neck rest a necklace of many different metals. Gold, silver, copper, bronze, and others you don't recognize. One's even green, and reminds you vaguely of the material Darzi's spear is crafted from. He lays sprawled out in a rocking chair, his twelve eyes closed and his form relaxed. Sleeping. Around him the mist swirls, ever changing, ever moving. Eventually, it passes him by. He's left sitting in a otherwise empty void, the mist long since vanished.

(2/3 or 4)
>>
You turn the page, and the scene changes. The mist returns, but only the barest wisp. It forms itself into the shapes of men and bows down before the sleeping god. The offer gifts of precious gemstones, metals, and other valuables while supplicating themselves before him. The god, of course, takes no notice. Why would he? He's merely taking a short nap. You continue to flip through the pages, watching his story unfold. Eventually the wispy figures vanish, one by one. When only one remains it draws a dagger of cold iron and slits its throat, still the god pays no mind as its last servant lay dying. The god is forgotten, not even a minor cult left to remember him.

The next page you flip causes the vision to vanish, replaced instead by a robed figure formed from mist sitting in a meditative pose. It channels vys, your vys you realize with some minor discomfort, and its head turns to gold. Tendrils of shadow pry and prod at the figure's head but make no progress, and quickly relent. You flip the page, and it reveals the inner workings of the wispy figure outlined in copper, iron, and bronze. His vys reserves are represented as a polished gold ball in his gut.

You turn the page again, as nothing seems to be happening. The figure reaches into itself and tears away a chunk of the golden ball with its bare hands, placing the torn chunk in its mouth even as ball reforms. As it swallows, its head turns to gold. Again, the tendrils attack the wispy figure's head but make no progress. You can only assume this is intended to be some sort of meditative guide, perhaps the most basic of techniques for steeling oneself against mental assault? You can't be certain.

(3/4)
>>
You turn the page again, and this time it depicts a figure standing. A creature of shadow charges from behind him, and his arm forms into a long silver blade. With a sweep of its arm, the shadow is cut down. More come at him, and over the course of several minutes it dances across thin air, slicing this way and that with metallic blades formed, as far as you can tell, from its very flesh. When it comes to stand once more at its origin point, it sits down and the blades vanish.

The next page reveals a figure seated much as the previous figure was after the end of its fight. It reaches towards the 'ground', the flat plane on which it sits, and pushes itself up while maintaining a meditative pose. It suspends itself there, for a time, and then sets itself back down. It repeats this action repeatedly, iron slowly creeping through its form until it's made entirely of the metal.

You turn the page, and find yourself staring at one of the six faces you saw previously on the god Dhatu. It is a ambiguously gendered, with wide black eyes and delicate silver features. Unlike previously, its eyes are open. It stares into you with a frightful intensity. You feel a single word whispered in the back of your mind.

{Improve}

And with that, the book closes itself.

You push the book aside and fold your legs beneath yourself. You don't know why, but you just feel compelled to meditate. You've got to get it out of your system before the knowledge you've gained slips from your memory, as you're certain it will if you don't use it. It's a strange sort of urge. Demanding, like an itch you can't quite scratch.

As you close your eyes and slip into your trance, you feel as though you have little choice regarding how you'll meditate. Something tells you you're not quite ready to attempt to reinforce your mind, which leaves you with reinforcing your body. Unbidden, and perhaps aided by your previous experiences with meditating while moving through Marsala Ve forms, you find yourself beginning a rigorous exercise routine.

As you lift yourself into the air, suspend yourself by the tips of your fingers, contort your body this way and that, and perform a wide variety of other physical feats over and over again, you slowly begin to feel your body harden. At first, it's not really noticeable, a little stiffness you need to work out of your joints. Then your skin loses any hint of flexibility, each motion becomes stiff, almost robotic. Then you can hardly move at all, save slowly and carefully. However, the harder it becomes to move the stronger it is you feel.

You experience a true breakthrough when you realize that Metal Magic is the magic of altering things on a very basic level, but most importantly it's the magic of altering oneself. Where as all the other schools of magic are very outwardly focused, Metal magic is quite the opposite.

With this revelation your concentration is broken, and you collapse into an exhausted heap atop your bedding. You're not sure how long you've been meditating, but it must have been several hours at the least. You can hear voices outside your door, what sounds like two men holding a conversation. Not voices you recognize, at least you don't think so. You try to rise, but find that the barest motion has your limbs screaming bloody murder.

On the bright side, when you channel Metal Magic into your hand you feel it solidify, adopting for an instant a metallic sheen. A coldness descends, and then a complete numbness. You feel as though you could have a blacksmith wail away at your hand with a hammer and experience not the slightest bit of pain.

What I want to know is if with sufficient water/metal control we can make any metal flow like mercury.

You channel water magic into your limbs to alleviate some of the pain. It works, but you still hurt. Carefully you force yourself into a seated position, and from there to your feet. You make your way to the door, working out the stiffness from your legs gradually. Zahak peeks his head out of his blanket to watch you pass, you think he might be vaguely amused, or maybe confused. You're uncertain.

Regardless, you jerk the door open and step outside, closing it gently behind you after sending generally comforting, happy thoughts Zahak's way. Hopefully he won't burn down your room again. You're beginning to feel sorry for the poor folks who are forced to clean your room. Once in the hallway, you find yourself face to face with two of the Shah's immortals. You're not sure if they're ones you've met before. One wields a short-hafted spear with a point which glows dimly. The other doesn't appear to have any weapons at all.

The spear-bearer speaks. “We tried knocking but you didn't answer; the Shah sent us to inform you that he will be leaving within the hour, and that upon his departure he has no desire to speak, meet, or engage with you in person until such a time as he is prepared to properly unbanish you. The letters noting your exception from the usual punishment Aghtaki receive have been sent out across the land, multiple copies carried by multiple courtiers. They're expected to arrive to even the Shahdom's most distant settlements within the next two weeks; you've nothing to fear in your travels.”

The other Immortal, the unarmed one, speaks next. “Should you wish to contact the Shah for a reason of vital importance, you may seek out one of our number and leave your message with them. We will report what you have to say directly to the Shah.” With this, the soldier turns sharply and marches off down the hall. His companions follows.

Does /tg/ have a particularly high proportion of australians, or is it just that everyone's settling in after getting home and cracking a beer?

You grin. Gods, it's nice to have that incompetent ponce out of your life for the near-future. Suddenly your aches and pains don't seem nearly so taxing as you make your way through the halls to the library. You'd even go as far as saying you have a bit of a spring in your step. It doesn't take you very long to reach the Library, and with but a touch of vys the door slides open. You step inside to find it largely empty, though a number of monks are scattered around on the floor or at a number of tables arrayed around the room. You spot Chrys reading by herself at one table near the display case housing the Temple relics.

The librarian, a decrepit old man with his nose buried in a book, sits at a tiny wooden desk seemingly oblivious to the world. You approach him, reaching into your cloak and withdrawing the Metal Codex. As you draw near he carefully closes the tome he was reading and sets it on his lap, smiling to you in an absentminded sort of way. His eyes are fogged by cataracts, you assume he's blind.

“What can I do for you, Brother?” His voice comes out a dry rasp, as if at any moment he might suffer a coughing fit.

You hold out the book in your hands. “I'd like to purchase this tome, I was wondering what it will cost me.” You state matter-of-factly.

The old man takes the book from your hands gently, setting it down on his desk. He flips it open, running his fingers along the pages tenderly. Almost like you might expect a man to caress a lover. It's a little odd, to be frank. After a time he closes the book and nods. “Three hundred gold, not a silver less.”

You stare at the man for a moment, silent. “Three hundred gold? I'm sorry, did I hear that correctly?”

The old man nods. “Three hundred. The book itself is worth much more. Really, I'm giving it to you at a bargain. Don't forget that every silver will go to help the Temple, so think of it sort of like a donat-”

You cut him off. “No, listen old man. I'm not paying three hundred gold for that book. It's a pile of gibberish regarding some fictional god. It has no use whatsoever. The only reason I even want the accursed thing is because it's decorated beautifully and would look good decorating a foyer. I'm not paying three hundred gold for a glorified decoration. I was thinking a hundred gold, at most.”

The old man licks his lips hesitantly. “Now, maybe three hundred gold was a tad unreasonable. Two hundred fifty seems-”

You don't let him finish the sentence. “A hundred gold. Look, I'm not even particularly worried about the price. It's the principle of the matter. You're trying to rob me blind, and even if I can afford it I'm not just going to bend over and let you do as you wish to my coin purse. A hundred gold, no higher.”

The old man sighs, rubbing his eyes wearily. “I can't offer it for any less than two hundred, it's the absolute lowest I can go. Anymore and I'll get in trouble with the Temple Elders and the new Varistha.”

You and the man argue for a time, but eventually settle on a hundred eighty. It's more than you wanted, but it's not bad. A decidedly acceptable deal. You set out ten stacks of eighteen neatly piled gold coins and snatch the book from his hands, turning to examine the library at large. Chrys still sits in the corner reading, but it seems that a monk has joined her. You don't recognize the man, but he seems to be saying something to her. She ignores him obstinately.
