You stand on the side of a mountain overlooking a vast fortress of brass and iron. You’re finally here, the fortress of the demon lord, Duke Salvastis.
The fortress is bigger than many towns you’ve seen and before it is a vast army camp – though it’s mostly deserted, much of the army away on supply raids, stripping the plane bare.
The fortress itself is a blocky, ugly monolith with only a few entrances, all heavily guarded and all potential entrances such as windows or the roof barred, warded and alarmed. Even more than a mile away you can feel powerful and malevolent demonic magics, using any sort of divine or angelic power here will be instantly noticed.

Its appearance speaks of absolute authority and a willingness to punish the slightest infraction, even at this distance you can detect and discern a magical aura of fear and rulership. According to Hyalia the fortress has 3 possible entrances that you could use.

The torture chambers and murder pits the demons use for entertainment have an outflow for blood and other bodily fluids, and as both washed by the simply method of pouring a lot of water on them the outflow pipe is large enough to crawl up, though the smell will be pretty bad, also you’ll emerge in one of the torture chambers or murder pits – both of which are locked up, though not guarded when not in use.
>>
You can see raiding parties regularly bringing in captives and slaves, some are succubi and other demons, some appear to be mortals. Some of the captive parties are large, numbering in the hundreds. You could disguise yourselves as captives and sneak in that way. The captives are examined before going into the keep though, your disguises would need to hold up to that, and the captives likely end up in cages of some sort when in the fortress.

Lastly, the method Hyalia used to escape: The mountains sometimes move and crack the fortress walls, meaning it is in a constant state of repair. There are caves underneath the fortress that are walled off from the fortress itself but there are always places you could squeeze through or break through. Hyalia found plenty of guards down there but the guards were lazy and bored, as only they only encounter the occasional vermin or lost imp, guard duty in the caves is seen as light punishment.

Beside you stand Jal, your double, and Ebonsong, as well as a pair of the demonic dwarven guides.

Jal gives a low whistle as you look at the fortress “well” she says “ain’t gonna say I’m not impressed, but there ain’t no house what can’t be boned.”

Ebby stares in wonder “It’s huge” she says “how will we find your mother, big Sis?”

“Hyalia said that all the important prisoners were kept in a specially-guarded vault” you say “she was never able to get in, but she knows where it is, at least.”

“K” she says in a small, voice, overawed by the fortress.

“Well?” says your double impatiently “Are we going, or what?”

>Go up the pipe
>Pretend to be captives

Behind you one of the dwarven guards says to the other one “Think it’ll work?”

“We’ll go underground” you say “It’s the safest route.”

“Right” agrees your twin “let’s get going then.”

You all re-enter the cave and make your way to the caves underneath the fortress, as Hyalia said, it’s pretty unstable here – you see several small cave-ins on your way and almost get caught in one yourself.

Eventually you find your way in as Jal spots a black metal wall that’s buckled and cracked, with just enough room (with a little scraping) to get past, as you continue through the caves you see more such walls and the feeling of demonic magic grows stronger, eventually you hear voices up ahead. As you creep closer you can see a half-dozen demons sat lazing around in what looks like it is supposed to be guard post. They’re arguing over whose rat won the last bout – apparently both rats died of their wounds, but it’s not clear which one actually died first.

A little back-tracking reveals an alternative route but the feeling of demonic energies is stronger there, a quick spell confirms that the second route is heavily alarmed. You could try sneaking past the demons – the guard post covers the whole passage but they’re loud and not very aware. Or you could fight them or try to find another way past them. Or you could risk the other route and have to dispel or otherwise fool the alarm spells, or you could search for another route, which could take time.

Not that it probably matters with a 20, but it does make sense when stealthing to try and be as stealthy as possible.
>>
You change to a human shape showing just a touch of dragon-bloodand your sister and Ebonsong do the same, you motion the others to follow you quietly and you all start to sneak past the arguing demons, keeping low and in the shadows. Jal easily blending in to the terrain to the point that you can hardly see her, and the rest of you are quiet enough, but you still wince at every noise made as you slowly, so very slowly creep past the demons.

Eventually you are past the demons, who remain oblivious to your presence and then you move onwards into the fortress proper – or at least the lowest levels of it.

“Where to now?” asks your double quietly, as you stand in a deserted corridor on the lowest levels of the fortress.

“Incha mums prison thataway?” asks Jal, pointing “Should be pretty close yeah?”

“The angel weapons should be around here” pipes up Ebonsong “they’d be useful.”

“We can clear this place later” argues your twin “first we should go up and kill Salvastis.”

Thanks to Hyalia, you have a good idea of the general location of all of these, as well as the guardrooms and ordinary prison.

Where to first?

>>
“We try the weapons vault first” you say “no matter what we do afterwards” you say to your companions “What we find in there will be useful” probably.

The four of you sneak through the demon fortress to the special weapons vault, there are occasional patrols, but they are loud enough that you can easily hear them coming and avoid them. Eventually you arrive at a thick black iron door labelled *Special Weapons Vault: Authorised Access Only*. It has a number of thick bolts and padlocks securing it, like most things in this place it emanates demonic magic.

“Right” says Jal, loosening her fingers and pulling out her lockpicks “Time to go to work.”
“Ah first” you say, getting some distance from the door, casting Arcane Sight and then returning: yup, the door is magically warded, trapped and alarmed, any attempt to pick the locks, get past the door or cast magic nearby it will be detected. Anyone touching the door will get, oooh that one’s nasty and actually trying to pick the locks...ugh, you’ll be seeing that next time you try and eat, you just know it. In short, there’s a lot of magic protecting this place.

[AE 96/97]

“Dispel it carefully” suggests Ebonsong “You can do it without being detected Sis.” True, you could, it would be a delicate task that could take an hour or more, but you could do it.

“Just Disjunction it!” says your double “smash and grab, it’s quick, it’ll work, and they might know we’re here already – this whole place feels like a trap.”

Jal shakes her head “Never smash a box” she says “could damage the goodies inside.”

“Let’s try the quiet option first” you say to your double “Keep an eye out would you? This is going to take all my concentration.” With a shrug your double takes up a lookout position, Jal and Ebonsong joining her. You sit down in front of the door and stare at it, hard. You can do this, you and Isla practised stuff like this, just in case.

You cast your spell to dispel the magic, releasing the arcane energy slowly, so very slowly over several minutes so as not to alert the wards, and then you use the focused thread of magic to begin picking all the magic apart.

[AE 95/97]

It feels like you are sat before that door for days, picking apart the spells on it, alarms first, then look for spells triggered by removing the alarms, then alarms linked to other spells, then scan for hidden alarms, then work on the traps and wards, then look for spells triggered by removing them. It is a painstaking process and by the end of it sweat is dripping down your brow, but you are finally sure, after the last five minutes of doing nothing but looking for any hidden spells or spells you missed that you got them all.

Finally you slump down “Ok Jal” you say hoarsely “Your turn”.

“Gotcha” she says, kneeling in front of the door, it takes her only a few minutes to undo all of the locks.

“You make it look so easy” you say with a tired smile, coming to your feet.

“I’ve got magic fingers” she says to you with a grin and a wink, waggling her fingers at you suggestively. Ah it’s good to have the old teasing Jal bac- and then you’re back in the dwarven hall, holding Jal down as she screams, blood everywhere, begging, begging you to- no, NO! You shake your head, can’t get distracted now.

“Let’s go” you say, walking through the door. Inside the vault is split into several sections. The largest is labelled *demon* and you spot a smaller section with three locked doors labelled *angel* as well as other sections labelled *mortal*, *giant*, *undead*, *elemental*, *fae* and *unknown*.
>>
Your companions follow you in, Jals eyes light up with greed at all the small locked doors in different sections. Ebby stares around in wonder and your double focuses on the Angel section, starting towards it.

With your arcane sight you can tell that each section is protected by magic: each has a number of alarm spells on it, but no other magical defences you can see. Still, each section you want to explore will take time, maybe as much time as it took to open the main door. A half-hour for each section does add up...

“We’re just here for the angel weapons” you remind Jal, as you approach the section with your double, and carefully unpick all the alarm spells. Damn that takes some focus, finally you are free to see what you’ve got.

“Aww c’mon” whines Jal “Just a peek, yeah?”

“No” you say as you touch the first vault “you can come back for the others late-” Oh, oh wow...

For the first time in weeks, the first time since you can to Hell, you can feel not demonic magic, but angelic. It soothes and refreshes you, reminding you of your mother, of the angels back home, you feel like you could get lost in this feeling...you snap back to yourself with a shake of your head.

The first two items are fairly simple, you examine them with your arcane sight: a potion that confers some sort of damage resistance and a circle of Celestial Iron that looks like it’s meant to be worn on the arm – it increases the wearers strength. Disappointingly you feel that neither is powerful enough to have a large benefit for you, but could greatly benefit someone weaker than you. You could determine their exact effects but it could take an hour or so.

The last holds a longsword made of celestial iron, as you reach for it a voice says “I wouldn’t do that if I were you?”

“What?” you say, almost dropping the other potion and the armband.

“So sorry” says the voice, it’s the sword, looking hard at it you realise there’s an angel bound into the sword. It keeps talking “I really wouldn’t hurt you if I can avoid it, but the demons tampered with my abilities, it could be very dangerous for a mortal to touch me now.” It’s talking at a normal volume, echoing in the large vault.

“Why would it be dangerous?” you ask.

“Ah well that’s a bit embarrassing” says the sword “You see, some of my abilities originally required a bit of energy from my wielder. As they were angels or paladins, this wasn’t too difficult. But thanks to the demons tampering, now all of my powers require some of my wielders energy, and if they don’t have enough magical energy I’ll start draining their lifeforce, at least, I think that’s how it works” it says almost conversationally “The only time they tested this I killed three of their cultists that they ordered to pick me up, but all of them had some sort of demonic power, so it *might* be safe for you to hold me.”

“How about I wrap you in cloth?” you say.

“Excellent idea!” it congratulates you, “but then you can’t use me.”

Hmm, well it doesn’t sound like it could hurt *you* but it might hurt another wielder.

“Who are you?” you ask

“Oh very sorry” it says “Where are my manners? I am Sirion Haltith Gemyael, Archon of Konig.” You know from your own angels that Sirion is an angelic rank, roughly equal to a major, and Haltith would be his angelic regiment.

“A mighty angel indeed” you say “What powers do you have?”

“Quite a few” says Gemyael “I can enhance a paladins ability to smite evil; I am quite deadly against demons; my wielder is very difficult to charm or control; I can create a sanctuary around my wielder; my wielder is resistant to magic and can break spells and...ah the last one I’m not supposed to reveal to anyone but a worthy wielder, sorry.”

“Ok” you say “time for a prison break” and you lead your companions towards the prison that houses your mother. The area it is in is more heavily patrolled, and has several guard check points, you double back and dodge patrols, focused on avoiding the large, brutish and noisy demon guards.

Just as you’re about to reach the prison block you round a corner only to run smack into a smaller demon coming the other way, you both fall back a step in surprise and the demon cringes as if expecting a blow.

The demon in question looks like a demon-blooded human with a lot of demonic blood, perhaps 12 years old and carrying a satchel filled with scrolls. You’ve seen messengers like him running through the fortress halls but you were so intent upon listening for guards he escaped your notice.

With his arms up in front of his face he peers at you in fear, then confusion, before asking “Hey who are you?”

There’s dozens of guards within earshot, if you make a lot of noise here, you’ll have a big fight on your hands.

You hang back, time to let your double take the lead. She swiftly steps forward and grabs the demon child by the throat, picking him up and squeezing so he can’t yell out. With her other hand she grabs the satchel so it doesn’t fall, he struggles in her grip but can’t escape, in a few short moments his struggles get weaker, and weaker and he goes limp.

Ah that was quick thinking on her part, now you just need to hide the unconscious kid and...wait, why does she still have him by the throat? Why isn’t she letting him go? She’s just holding him up by the throat, a look of determination on her face.

You decide to trust your double, after all she’s you right? She’ll let go, won’t she?

She’s not letting go, the boy, no the body, in her hands gives one last twitch and goes still.

“You, you just...” you say, stunned “you murdered him!”

Ebby is backed up against the wall, away from your double, and Jal looks conflicted.

Your twin gives you a flat look “Ok, you want to do this now? Sister we are infiltrating a huge fortress in Hell, we cannot be discovered otherwise there’s going to be a lot of deaths – probably including our own, one life against that, I can live with.”

“You could have just knocked him out!” you protest.

“He would only wake up in a few minutes and raise the alarm” you double insists, handing the satchel to Jal to hold and taking a firmer grip on the body and walking away to hide it “Unless you want to risk being discovered by putting him to sleep with a spell. I’ll be back in a few minutes.”

You don't see any alarms or other methods of detection near you. But casting (except *very* slowly) in the fortress is always a risk.
>>
>>36284553
It's not necessary, he'd wake up in a few minutes, we'll free our mother and alert the entire fortress in a few minutes, they're aware of us either way.

And we could've chosen to talk our way out of it, wouldn't have even been that hard.

>>36284551
That doesn't mean we abandon our morality and are suddenly okay with killing a child and condemning their soul to an eternity in Hell.

You forget that there are no demon children. He "looked" like one, but demons are spawned as larvae. So the chances of him being a actual child are pretty slim.
>>
>>36284668
He looked like a half-demon child. It's possible he was a full demon, but, as far as I can recall, no weak demons appear to be human.
>>

Hard to tell. But Sireyi probably would assume its actual child until proven otherwise, so I guess its not really elevant to how bad she feels about it.

He lives here and would have died here. That is very much not on us in the slightest.

I don't think any of us actually have any idea how far away her prison is. And unless we smash and grab, it will take hours to dispel the enchantments behind her prison. Also, I not a single person voted for persuasion or bluff. So yeah.
>>
You close your eyes, pinch the bridge of your nose and take a moment “Ok” you say “This is the wrong time to have this talk, but we will be having it at some point.”

Your double shrugs “Any time you want” she says. She wanders off and is back a few minutes later.

Ebby seems shocked into silence but Jal whispers to you “I seen a lot o’ hard stuff onna streets” she says “But if ya wan’ me ter pink ‘er wi’ me knives, jus’ say”

“Not right now Jal” you say “We’ve got other stuff to worry about.”

The four of you approach the special prison section, like the last place you visited the first defence is a huge iron door with a lot of nasty spells and alarms on it.

“Huh” says Jal “No guards, funny, a clink wi’ no guards.” Ebby is still silent.

“Ok” says your double “Now this is an ideal time for a smash and grab, unless you want to take more time slowly picking this one apart?”

We just entered the prison block, shouldn't take us long to find our mother, and we're going to alert them either way, since we know that Salvastis is using our mother as bait and it wouldn't be too much of a leap for Sireyi to assume the same thing.

The cord would probably make a decent enough rope, depends on if it restricts to the point of breaking bone or just being really uncomfortable, probably the latter if it's deliberately flesh-like.

Once again you sit down and slowly pick apart the magics on the door, not stopping until you are satisfied you got all of them.

[AE 94/97]

You notice there are a number of antimagic fields around the prison – particularly covering the walls. Makes sense you suppose, stops people from just bypassing the door. The door itself is not in an antimagic field, though the walls, ceiling and floor around it are.

Then Jal goes to work on the locks, expertly opening all of them. You push open the heavy door only to see a long corridor ahead of you, leading deeper into the prison, along this corridor are a number of thick brass and iron doors, probably the jail cells, looks like Salvastis has a lot of *special* prisoners, the doors all have numbers, not names. You’ll need to find some sort of list to find your mother, unless you want to start releasing random prisoners.

Jal gives the door a shove as your double and Ebby join you in the prison corridor. Jal then pushes the door back the other way, muttering.

“What’s wrong?” you ask Jal

“Door’s too stiff” she says “Sumfink wrong wi’ it.”

“C’mon Jal” says your double “Keep up” and she starts to walk down the corridor “Damn” she steps back “Antimagic field, hidden one” She’s right, although hidden from your arcane sight, a few steps down the corridor magic stops working.

>>
>>36285174
Why? Sure, killing him was "wrong" by Sireyis standards, but realistically he was a demon in hell, he was evil. There was pretty much no way he survived unless he was.

So here what is the problem with using Disjunction?

Or he survived by running errands and staying out of the way.

>>36285261
We're detected instantly if we use that spell, it's too obtrusive to not notice.
>>
>>36285283
>Far as we know, half-demon child.
Still inclined to evil. And his society definitly didn't foster the positive parts.
Besides, wthere is a lot of reasons why it might not work. His soul belonging to hell, he might already be a larvae by this point, or he might simply not agree to be ressurected by his murderer.
>>
>>36285316
>Still inclined to evil.
Judging people for their blood is bullshit.

>And his society definitly didn't foster the positive parts.
You still have evil people in good and neutral societies; a runt like him would probably be more neutral than evil.

Definitely.

>His soul belonging to hell, he might already be a larvae by this point
No? Souls are trapped, tormented and devoured; they aren't turned into demonic larvae. Also why I wanted to use Soul Bind.

>he might simply not agree to be ressurected by his murderer.
It would at least ease my (and Sireyi's) conscience. Also don't think he can refuse if he's in a soul gem.

Resurrected.
>>
>>36285261
>So here what is the problem with using Disjunction?

Kills all magic in the area - using it to crack an antimagic field also kills any spells suppressed by the field as well as any hidden spells, in short it's not subtle and it wipes out everything in the area.
>>
>>36285374
>Definitely.
Not definitly, if you meet a demon-blooded in hell, if he is anything but evil its a one in a million thing.

> they aren't turned into demonic larvae.
The spawning pools from which larvae arise are fed with mortal souls. Its a change from the usual, but mortal souls still get fed into the process of making larvae.
>>
>>36285374
Its pointless by now anyway, because its too late to trap his soul.
His soul belongs to hell now. And we can't ressurect it for the same reason we wouldn't be able to ressurect our companions if they died here without protection.

You trust Jal not to jerk you around, you’re currently revising your view of your double “I’m staying with Jal” you say, as your double turns to you, her hands on her hips, looking impatient.

As Jal pokes at the bottom and top of the door you say to Ebby “Can you take a few steps into the antimagic field, I need to know if it blocks our bond or not.”

“K” she nods and walks into it, counting in your head as she does so -1, 2, 3- yep, the numbers break off just as she gets past your double end enters the antimagic field, so much for that idea.

“That panel” says Jal, pointing to one of the interlocking metal plates making up the ceiling “can yer pry it off?”

“Jal” you say in exasperation “is this really the time?”

“Please?” she asks, a serious look on her face. You shrug and become more draconic, looking like a half-dragon you fly to the ceiling, a good five feet above your head and pry the panel off “Now what?” you ask.

“Now lemme see in it.” Says Jal, you head back down, pick her up and get her to the ceiling, she pokes her head through the hole then quickly comes back saying “love we gotta leave, right now.”

“What?” you ask “Why?”

“This whole place” she indicates the prison “Is a maze-maker.”

“A what?” you ask, looking to your double, who just shrugs in confusion.

“A maze maker!” says Jal urgently “You train thieves ter find their ways into places but yer can’t build a new house or maze every time so yer build a place wi’ moving walls, a place that can change as yer need it ter’!” her eyes are wide and her skin pale in fright “love angel this whole place can be shaped around yer ter create any type o’ box or trap they want. Don’t” she pleads “go down that corridor.”

I mean that it was *spelled* definitely, you're spelling it definitly, you need an e between the t and the l.

Whether he was evil or not is irrelevant, he's a child, which means that I'm going to hold circumstance responsible rather than just saying "he's evil, there's nothing we can do about it, not our problem".

Especially because we've redeemed evil people before, and two of our friends are half-demons from a lost prime, one of whom was actively trying to make it a better place in spite of her blood.

The souls themselves aren't made into larvae, they're just food for larvae.

But we promised our Twin we would try to be harder and take her so she can be hard for us if we falter. And this is pretty much that kind of situation.

Jal would have grabbed the kid from behind and put a knife to his throat and threatened him into staying quiet. Only if it became clear he was not going to be quiet would she have killed him, and then she'd have a had a bit of a breakdown.

Of course, Jal hadn't thought beyond that, so once she took him alive and threatened him into submission you would have had a choice of tie him up, knock him out or kill him.

“Well” you say “we couldn’t stay hidden forever” to your double you add “Lets wreck it!”

In short order the two of you have broken cogs, bent bars of metal and generally wrecked enough of the machine that it won’t work, at least not on a large scale, small parts of it may still be functional. In the distance you can hear bells ringing.

“Time to run” yells your double, putting action to her words as she pelts down the corridor, you follow her only a moment later as you summon your arcane powers and rip apart the antimagic field.

You sense...an awful lot of powerful evil demons in those cells, and it seems they noticed the effect of your spell as well. You hear fists and limbs slamming against the doors of the nearest cells. Of course your Disjunction spell only cleared a short section of the corridor – you keep having to recast it as you run, as you do so more and more of the inmates start to attack their doors. You’re going to have a lot of angry evil monsters in the corridor with you soon.

[AE 74/97]

Finally your double locates a cell without a demon in it, you pull back the viewing slot to see a tall angel woman inside, she starts a little as light pours into the cell from the tiny slot “Who are you?” she asks “And what’s going on?”

“Syberis?” you breathe out.

“Yes” she responds regally, beautiful despite the rags and chains she’s wearing “Who are you?”

Ferreting out a shapeshifter is gonna need something more robust than that. You'd need an extremely specific command like "rub your belly and pat your head" otherwise they could just nod and fool you.
>>
“Unlock it” you say to Jal, wondering if making a crack about Jal demonstrating her skilful and nimble fingers is a good idea, then dismissing it.

Jal goes to work on the lock, and the door is open in short order. Which is good, because the others doors around you are starting to buckle; the inhabitants preparing to tear their way free. Around you an alarm starts to sound and there is a horrible grinding as gears in the floor and ceiling jam, grating against one another.

“No time to explain” you say to your mother as she steps falteringly out of her cell, your True Sight picking up no illusions or falsehoods, it really is her.

“Who are you?” she asks suspiciously.

“We need to get out” you say “We don’t have much time.”

She tilts her head “Gemyael” she says “Is that really you?”

“It is Syberis, truly” answers the sword in your pack

“What can you tell me about these dragons?” she asks

“We need to go now!” you say urgently, she stands her ground.

“Not much” he says apologetically “I sense no evil on them, but they have demonstrated powerful sorcerous might, they could easily hide their true natures from me, what I have witnessed is the one on the left of the one who holds me killing a part-demon child, when she could have restrained him or my holder could have used her magic to trap him.”

“That’s not-” says your double, her eyes wide.

“I couldn’t-” you say at the same time.
>>
“Gemyael to me!” says Syberis and the longsword flies from your pack into her hand, with a smooth, fluid lunge she stabs your double straight through the heart and turns to you, sword in hand, she advances on you as Jal and Ebby scramble out of the way. Doors crack and split around you as monsters start to emerge. You see your double kneeling on the floor, staring at the hole in her chest in surprise, blood pouring from it – with her healing powers that’s probably not fatal, but still, bad form mother.

This isn’t how you imagined your reunion going. Your mother advances on you, a golden halo forming above her head, six white feathered wings spread out behind her. Her eyes are molten steel and her skin gold. Waist-length silver hair dances around her in an unseen wind, a holy sword in her hand pointed at your heart.

Well, it seems the time for subtlety is over. In an instant you drop your disguise resuming your natural, half-angelic form; it’s what your mother expects to see after all.

“Stop mother!” you say in the angelic language “It’s me, Sireyi!” you hold your hands out towards her “Stop please!”

She lowers the sword “Sireyi, is it, can it really be you?” she takes a faltering step towards you and then stumbles as your double jumps her from behind. Your double has also shed her disguise and looks her blue-skinned demonic self.

“Get out of here!” your double yells at you, attempting to restrain your mother she hisses in her ear “Well, this is really going to add to my mummy issues, isn’t it?”

“Demon!” yells your mother, peeling your twin off her easily and holding her up in the air by her throat, pulling her sword arm back “It seems I’ll need to take your head to truly kill you.”

All Hell continues to break loose as most of the inmates join the fun, most fleeing for the exit but several jump Jal and Ebby. Ebby and a catlike demon form a ball of snapping jaws, hissing and claws as they roll around the place. Another demon that looks like a pile of scorpions in a humanoid shape grabs Jal, only for a dozen tentacles to emerge from her and restrain him, as she jams blessed blades into his eyes, from his screams he really doesn’t enjoy the experience.

More freed demons head for Jal and Ebby, they all avoid you and your mother. Ebby and Jal can handle their current dance partners, but perhaps not those looking to join them.

Who do you help first?

Your rush to your mother and your sister, grabbing your mother by the arm “Mother please!” you say “Trust me, you would very much regret killing her, and you” you say to your double “Sireyi, get a hold of yourself, we don’t have time for this!”

You mother drops your double “Sireyi?” she says, clearly confused, as your double drops to the ground, the hole in her chest healing “What is-” She turns to you only to see you sprinting towards Jal and Ebby “Sorry mother!” you yell back “I need to rescue my sister and one of my fiancées!”

“What!?” the strangled cry on confusion follows

“My life is very complicated right now!” you yell as you grab Ebby and Jal firmly and physically drag them away from their fights, heading back to your mother as the demons pause, trying to decide if they want to take on a full angel or not. At the same time a powerful dispel effect blankets the whole place, dismissing your arcane sight, as well as a few magical effects created by the demons too, burning claws and fearsome visages disappear.

A demonic looking mouth appears in mid-air part way down the corridor, not a full face, just a mouth “Return to your cells” it drones unemotionally “and you will not be punished, resist and you will suffer, the Dukes forces are on their way, do not attempt escape, escape is futile.”

Your mother and your double glare at one another, Ebby spits out a mouthful of cat fur as Jal says with feeling “fuck scorpions.”

Before you stands a demon horde of escaped prisoners who have no love for Salvastis. With you stand your allies and your mother. On their way are probably a lot of demonic guards.

What’s the plan?

>Smash through demons, escape
>Try to ally with prisoners
>Teleport away
>Other (what?)

Should it really be called Smite Juice at this point?

We usually use it for our Lightning abilities.

Lightning Storm is 10d6 + Willmod * 4 + 2d6/DE.

Teleporting in here might not be a good idea. As your companions prepare to stand against the demonic rush you step forward and say “Hold! We have a common enemy – Duke Salvastis who wants to kill or enslave all of us.” The front of the demon horde pauses momentarily and you continue “We” you indicate your allies “Are on our way out of this fortress, if we work together we stand a much better chance together than we do apart.”

One of the demons, a three-faced sorcerer of a type you have encountered before in Drache speaks “Your kind bears no love for ours, Angel” in his mouth that word is a curse “How do we know you won’t simply abandon demons to help yourself?”

The others angrily agree with the sentiment, though they use more curse-words. You reach within you to find the pool of deific power and twist the world around you.

“Because she’s never abandoned me” says your double, stepping forward, with a grin she adds “though I’ve often given her reason to.”

The demons stare at you two: an angel and a demon standing side by side, you take your sisters hand and squeeze it gently, she returns the squeeze and smiles at you.

One demon, a vast bear-like thing rumbles “too long have I been caged, I relish any chance to be free, I’m with you, until we are out I’m loyal to you.” First one, then another demon agrees, until almost all of those assembled have spoken.
>>
The three-faced sorcerer turns to you “What’s your plan?” it asks. “Good question” whispers your sister out of the corner of her mouth as the sorcerer continues “Teleporting out of here is useless – the Dukes security will have this whole area under a diversion field, if we teleport there’s no telling where we’ll end up, so how are you going to get us out?”

>We fight out way out
>Some divert the Dukes forces, the others sneak out
>We free the other prisoners
>We break into the armoury (regular and/or special?)
>We kill Salvastis
>Other (what?)

Pick and mix to make your plan.

Crit success: Until you’re out the demons won’t attempt betrayal, they will follow orders.

For spotting the teleport trap, very good, have some extra XP when this is over. You didn't spot the other trap, but avoided it by accident.

If they are afraid to fight him, we can point out that he'd likely hunt them down and imprison them again.
>>
“The plan is simple” you say “We kill Salvastis.”

“What?” asks your sister

“How?” asks several of the demons.

“We look his armoury, battle our way to this throne room” you say “And end him once and for all, any who want to escape instead can do so, but any of you who want revenge, are you with me?”

“Yes!” comes the roar from the horde

As you lead the demons into battle, you mother, your sister and your love by your side your mothers asks Jal “Is she always like this?”

“Nah” says Jal “Sometimes she gets really crazy.”

“Oh.” Says your mother faintly

“By the way” says Jal “If you are love angels mum, then that makes you Vivis-”

“The guards!” yells out one of the demons, they’re here!”

Indeed they are, as you pour out of the prison block a solid, tightly packed group of heavily armed demons stands to oppose. “Get back in your cells” bellows the leader of the guards.

“Really?” you say to your double “metal armour and weapons, against us?”

“This will be too easy” she agrees, as lightning begins to dance around both of you.

You spend the next several hours battling your way through Salvastis’ fortress, the demons on your side taking weapons from fallen foes, and cleaning the armoury out. It soon becomes clear that despite their smaller numbers, the hundred or so demons following you are no slouches. As you fight you find out that almost all are demon nobles of some kind – political prisoners of Salvastis or his followers that tried to overthrow him. Many of them rival your powers and a few might even exceed it. Throughout the fights you always give your foes a chance to surrender or flee, instead of to fight, few take you up on the offer.
>>
You battle your way to the throne room, only to find he has fled, fortunately a captured demon guard reveals that messengers are still arriving from the roof of the fortress, battling your way up there you find Salvastis, surrounded by thirty tough-looking guards. At least, they’d look tough if you weren’t backed up by a hundred demon nobles.

Salvastis is a tall vaguely-humanoid demon, perhaps 6 and a half feet tall, a nest of a dozen arms coming from each shoulder, his red and black skin visible in patches in the gaps in his brass full plate. He fights with two spears, multiple arms handing each one, instead of legs he has a long slug-like lower body. For a reputed coward, he doesn’t look scared; maybe he still has a few tricks up his sleeve? Around the edges of the roof are dozens of iron poles, and there’s a smell of a storm in the air, but you can’t feel any nearby storms.

“Surrender now” he says “and I will kill your allies quickly, you” he points a spear at you “I will torture until you give me what I want, after that, well you’re one of Velyas get, I expect you’ll be able to throw out a few half-demon children for me that I can make use of, before I kill you.” Why the Hell do your enemies always say things like that?

>Give him a chance to surrender

Does his offer of surrender and die fulfill the conditions of our doctrine?

>maybe he still has a few tricks up his sleeve? Around the edges of the roof are dozens of iron poles, and there’s a smell of a storm in the air, but you can’t feel any nearby storms.
Yeah, don't trust this at all.
>>
>>36288578
>Peaceful option, he relinquishes his demonic realm and agrees to do repentance by fighting the Lords of Life.
>Once he inevitably refuses, don't use storm abilities, and warn your sister for the same
>>
>>36288578
>Give him a chance to surrender

"By the grace of Velya I ask that you surrender so that you may be judged for your crimes. Do so and I will see to it that you are given a fair trial."

If he attacks I don't suppose we can call on our Heavenly Host and curb stomp him? Also call team two to back us up?

>>36288626
I'm thinking Thunder King on this whole setup. We may not want to stand on the ground if he decides to call down lightning and electrify it.
>>
>>36288741
We should probably tell Ebby to take flight and take Jal with her.
>>
>>36288741
We probably don't need our host to deal with him, let's see what he's got first.

If he does do the 'Thunder King' (I don't know what that's from) maneuver, then it's only our allies who need to watch out, and even then, only if we don't turn on EotS/they're out of it's range.

We're immune to electrical damage, and EotS makes all allies in it's range immune as well.
>>
>>36288778
I actually think he will use it to convert the electricity in some other energy type he is immune to, maybe acid or fire.
>>
>>36288819
Well then we just need to not supply him with any electricity to convert.
>>
>>36288778

Basically, the Thunder King is the source of power for his defenses. He charges up different mechanisms to create all sorts of lightning elementals and attacks.

I wonder if Sireyi's mother's sword has something to do with that? Or if I am misremembering, that other angelic weapon that was missing?
>>
The world around you seems to fade away; it’s as if it’s just you and him.

“You can surrender” you say “relinquish your demonic realm to a successor and help me in my battle against the Lord of Life returned, and I’ll spare you.”

He laughs “What nonsense you spout” he says “They are long gone, stand down.”

You gesture at the demons behind you “You’re out-numbered, out-classed and out of options” you say as the two forces face each other across the rooftop “you can’t win here.”

“Ah” he says, “Normally you’d be correct but you’re missing one thing”

“What’s that?” you ask, adding to a whisper to your sister “Don’t use your lightning powers for now, something funny is going on here.”

“I’m not just a mere demon” he says, his back humping and bulging as six black-feathered wings burst forth “I was once an angel, I command the powers of Hell and Heaven!” Most of the demons with you take a step back in shock, though this doesn’t seem to surprise your Mother. You might want to talk to Velya later about this. Still, now that he has declined your offer...

What a coincidence, so do we. Our sister is a fallen angel, we have a legion of demons behind us and could have a host of angels here in seconds.

“You think you’re the only one with secrets!” you say as your flesh becomes metal and four more wings erupt from your back “I would have offered you the chance to survive, instead you will find only death here, into them!” you command your demons and the two forces charge one another, coming together with a ferocious crash.

With your mental link to Isla reaching across planes you call in your allies: Matthias, Jianxi, Isla, both Sofias and Shahulzer appearing on the rooftop ready for battle.

As everyone charges into battle, you and Salvastis both hang back, eyeing the situation and each other, looking for an advantage.

“I’m impressed” he calls to you “But I only fight battles I know I will win. I give you a rare honour; the Welldrinker took me hundreds of years to create and though I lost it, it was never truly free, and now that I call it to serve, it’s most useful abilities are lost forever!”

You feel demonic magic lash out towards the mountains, and then a sound like a mountain screaming – a long low sound of tearing rock. Then the mountain range appears to explode and giant boulders are falling all around the fortress, hitting the ground, a few landing on the roof. Both sides pause in battle in shock. And them the boulders begin to move, unfolding into humanoid shapes like those you saw fighting the dwarves under the mountain. They join battle against your forces, and more are falling every moment. Although you enjoy a slight numerical advantage, in only a few seconds that will be gone, as more of the stone men fall from the sky, or climb the walls of the fortress to the roof.

“Now” says Salvastis, flying at you “Now this ends.”

Thread ends there. Next thread will be Saturday expected 7pm BST. I will post on Twitter to confirm. I hope you enjoyed it and thanks for being such great players. As usual I will hang around for questions for 20 mins for so, first up: traps.

I'm so fucking hyped!

Thanks for the thread Pally, it was great, you've come a long way since the first thread, it really shows here.

Great thread pally! I look forward to getting not getting any fucking work done on Saturday!

Also awhile back you mentioned that you wanted to do another quest once we finished with this chapter, Are you still planning on doing that and if so what are you thinking of running?
>>
>>36289230
So... Angels vs rock people?
>>
>Rock people
HAHA! they though I was mad when I created an army of paper golems! WELL WHO'S THE LOST CHILD IN THE MALL NOW!!!
>>
There were several traps around the prison. You spotted several. Another was a magical trap that was capable of reactivating itself after a disjunction, it was as follows:

Activates when the person in the cell says a word *Sireyi* and there is a viable target standing by the door outside the cell.

Long serrated spikes shoot from the wall into the space outside the door (enchanted anti-angel weapons). The maze-maker activates and forms an iron box around the same location – with back up walls every few feet. The prison goes into lockdown, The cell itself (and occupant) then move on an elevator upwards through the fortress to another location.

So had you told your mother your name, she would have repeated it, and things would be different.
>>
>>36289288
Oh man, Salvastis is going to be so mad.

He summons all these rock guys, losing the best parts of his ancient artifact, to tilt the battle in his favor and even the numbers, and we summon in 100 angels immediately afterwards.

Yes, Psychic Rebel will start end december/early Jan.

Name might change but not the concept. Chargen will be done in first thread during first mission (i.e, the tactics chosen set the MC abilities).

Hopefully it will be fun. You'll also have 4 possible basic characters to choose from.

Players will no doubt pick the youngest female option

Random idea

Good/Bad?

Do a 50-ish thread summary in the form of Jal directing a play written and directed by Jal, about Sireyi's life as part of build up to wedding.
>>
>>36289955
We haven't actually had any real arguments like that in this quest, as far as I can recall.

We had a few things resembling waifu wars, but it wasn't ever really that severe.

One guy wanted to reject Isla's feelings before even getting to know her in an early thread and it almost wound up getting written due to nobody speaking against it until OP revealed he was planning on writing it, and another guy whined incessantly about the vote on who to date between Jal/Sofia and Isla being miscounted.

Unless people suddenly devolve into shit-flinging retards, it shouldn't change.

>>36290093
>Jesus Christ, How Horrifying

It's a great idea.

>>36290093

>>
>>36290093
Ah shit yes.
>>
>>36290123
>and another guy whined incessantly about the vote on who to date between Jal/Sofia and Isla being miscounted
I actually remember two cases of whining about that from two different sides.
I mean, its always waifu wars when you come down to it, and Pally had, effectivly, banned romance for a long time until Jal/Sofias pregnancy pretty much settled the issue.
>>
>>36290123
I think the Jal/Sofia or Isla thing was the closest we ever came to a outbreak of waifu wars, which was kinda surreal.

But that was probably helped by romance being out of the picture for a pretty long time, I remember mild controversy way back in, the 3 thread, about that orc guy.
And the het/yuri fighting was largely preempted by lack of candidates on the het side after romance came back.

And yes, I pay way too much attention to that kind of thing, but I find these quest dynamics interesting
>>
>>36290093
I like the idea but i'm not in love with the idea.
>>
>>36290183
>>36290240
I will never regret my decision to make Sireyi a virgin saving herself for marriage.
