LAST TIME, ON POKEMON: SOUTHERN SHORES QUEST….

Our dynamic duo, GREY and DANI, rescued fellow Sortie ERICA with the help of Grey’s new Espurr, MITTENS. Erica had been suffering while under the effects of a GASTLY, a poisonous bat constantly surrounded in a mysterious miasma-like shroud. Grey, Mittens, and Dani fought off the bat long enough for Dani to lock on with her pokeball – earning her the gastly, now named VLAD, as a starter! Grey and Dani then saw to it that Erica was taken to the MEDICAL CENTER and TRAINER HOUSE for proper medical treatment. As a reward, the police officer on scene signed off on a trainer task for rescuing Erica!

Grey and Dani then went to the Trainer House themselves, where they got much needed R&R. Grey had a MYSTERIOUS DREAM. The next morning, the two talked to Erica about her past and their future. Erica and Mittens insisted that Grey keep Mittens while Grey offered that Erica travel with them. Erica and her Paras, MOSSIMER, agreed to join the team. Grey and Dani set off to do some shopping, hoping to finally get on the road and begin their Trainer Tours!

You are Grey, and you have just finished a lot of shopping.

In fact, you can’t remember doing this much shopping yourself ever. You had set your sights on outfitting your little group with sufficient camping supplies for a short journey South, but you hadn’t quite realized exactly how many things one needs while camping. Thankfully, Dani had been filling out a substantial mental checklist for the past couple hours. The two of you pooled together half of your money each, buying supplies for three and getting Erica the basics that she had lost.

>cont.
>>
>>36287667

You were in the middle of looking through some outdoor-suited outfits for Erica when Dani first spoke up about it. “I still can’t believe Erica was robbed on the road…!”

You were in the middle of looking through tents, hoping to pick up an improvement over your Standard-issue tent. “I know. I wonder: where she was when it happened?” You pause for a moment. Erica was in the Sorted block before yours, meaning she had left about two weeks before you and Dani arrived. She must have been close by, otherwise she would have wandered back to a different city. How long had she been in the city? How long ago was the attack? If it was close by… “Maybe we’ll come across them ourselves.”

Dani stops flipping through outfits at that, looking at you with a slight unease from the corner of her eyes.

As usual, however, it doesn’t last. She forces on a smile and goes back to the clothing rack. “Well, then we’ll just have to kick their asses like you promised!”

You smile and resume looking through the tent selection on the electronic screen in front of you. “You’re right. In the meantime, we’ll have to toughen up our teams so that we can deal with any assholes that do come up.”

Dani finishes her perusing, functional clothing items in hand. It won’t replace Erica’s wardrobe, but it will be enough to keep her dry, warm, cool, or comfortable on the roads ahead. “Definitely. It's pretty impressive that we already have starters, but three starters aren't going to hold up to a criminal's seasoned team. We'll need to head out and round out our teams. Speaking of which… Any idea on where we’re heading after this?”

>South. The traffic should have kept away any larger predators, so it will be safe.
>East. I wanted to pick up some aquatics and amphibians along the Bay and the Beach.
>West. The River, fields, and outskirts of town provide a lot of variety.
>North. The Forests are pretty heavily populated if you go up north.

“That’s a good question.” You run your hands through your hair, looking out the store window and into the bright light of day. Lots of younger people passing by. It’s probably Sorties, and there are a lot of them. “On the one hand, I don’t want to go South- there’s probably a lot of traffic there right now. Everyone’s going to be hitting the Main Route.”

You follow Dani to the clerk at the front of the store, purchasing the clothes and a Pokemon-proof tent each. As the clerk rings up the items she turns to you. “I think you’re right to think that. The Pokemon are going to mostly avoid those areas, and the ones that don’t are going to be chased out or caught. What about North?”

You put away your purchases, then walk out onto the street as you talk. “North is probably not good either. I hear it’s pretty heavily populated, so we could run into ‘mons too tough to take on right now unless we stick by the Ranger stations.”

Dani nods at that. “I’m glad you’ve thought this through so much. How about the Beach to the East?

“Well, I don’t think we need any aquatic pokemon right now, so the beach is out too. Really, I was thinking we should stick to the Western parts of the city and beyond. We already found a Gastly in the ‘burbs, and there’s the river and plenty of open fields beyond. Plus, I was flipping through Erwin’s book and I saw some details on a freshwater spring. So there’s a lot of opportunities to find different pokemon if we go West.”

“Alright, hold onto that thought – I think we’re pretty much done shopping, Grey. Is there anything in particular you wanted to get, though?”

“Anything in particular…? Hm…” You roll your head around a bit as you think. “Well, since we are going straight to the river picking up some fishing supplies would be great. Also, I would really like a fire-type. It will be hard finding one, but Erwin’s book has confirmed my suspicions that there are lots of powerful grass and bug-types around.”

Dani nods in understanding. “Right, of course. A fire type will definitely help in defending against those types. Plus, they’re good offensive types- right?” You nod. “Awesome. Oh, oh – and they can start fires!”

“Well, I didn’t want to catch a charmander to roast marshmallows – but it’s definitely a bonus!” You and Dani laugh a bit at that as you walk into a Pokemon Hunting and Supplies store.

>>>>

“Let’s see… This rod should do well in holding up to the weight of pokemon I’ll be going after. With the supplies that’s… About $150. Not bad.” You hold the rod up to Dani. “What do you think? Altogether it will run me about $150, and the fireproof gear and suppressant gel only comes to $250. Add in 5 pokeballs… And I would have $350 left.”

Dani doesn’t look up from her crouched position as she looks over equipment for handling electric types. “Very nice! I’m going to pick up some rubber gloves and a lightningrod, myself. I’m hoping to find a Pikachu, or maybe a Joltik…?”

You and Dani both ring out with a cashier minutes later, your virtual wallets significantly lighter than when you started the day. However, you now have all of the supplies you should need for trekking through the woods, hunting pokemon, and living your own personal adventure.

You and Dani both release your starters from their pokeballs once you are out on the street once more. Mittens stretches her little legs in a wide sort of yawn, while Vlad does a few flips and twirls before settling ontop of Dani’s head.

“Hey, Grey; Erica just texted me. The hospital has said she’s good to go and can leave immediately. Do you wanna go pick her up and head out of the city now?

“Actually, can we do something first real quick?” Dani looks up from her phone at that.

“Mm? Sure. What do you want to do?”
You pull up a map on your phone real quick, searching for “gifts.” You find a store nearby that sells some gifts, for humans and pokemon alike, and set your gps to guiding mode. “I’d really like to get a small thing for Erwin and say goodbye before we leave. I don’t know where he’ll head after today, and he did a lot for us. Right, Mittens?”

Mittens stops batting the tablecloth of a restaurant’s outdoor table with a jump, turning to face with with her wide eyes. “Yes. Erwin nice man. Did lot for TrainerGray. Got Mittens nice ball. Nice like TrainerGray.”

You give her a big smile before crouching down and pulling her into a hug. “Why thank you! If I’m a nice guy then you’re a super partner!” Mittens just “giggles,” the laughter floating through your mind like little bubbles of happiness.

>>>>

About an hour later and you’re at Erwin’s stand once more. Maybe for the last time?
You find the old man with his meowth once more – but this time he’s packing away his stand and supplies, tucking books and container balls alike into saddlebags strapped to…

Dani’s voice comes out softly next to you. “Woah.”

“Woah” is right. Erwin is packing away his items into an impressively-sized Skarmory, its plumage glinting in the sunlight as it cranes its neck about, preening. Every now and then its head shoots back up as it casts dark eyes upon the surrounding scenery or lets out a dull, rumbling trill.

You offer a waving hand to Erwin as you walk up and call out to him.“Hey Erwin!” He looks up and offers a wave back with a large, gleaming smile.

“Why hello’n there my friends! It’s great to be’n seein’ you again – what brings you’n back around these parts, mm?”

Dani speaks up first as she walks over to Piper, finding a scratching spot behind the feline’s ears once more and eliciting many purrs. “We wanted to say thank you, again, and say goodbye before we separated. You helped us a lot, and because of you we had Mittens, and because of Mittens we were able to save Erica.”

Erwin looks surprised and confused at this. “Mm? And who’s Erica..?”

>>>>

Dani goes on to explain recent events to Erwin who listens intently while nodding his head. Meanwhile, you pull a container ball out of your bag and carefully set it on a table. You then scroll through the contents and release gifts for Erwin – an old-fashioned “thank you” card, a small bag of treats for Piper, and a tiny, ornate pastry made by a local baker.

Erwin looks at you, confusedly, as you present the card and gifts to him. “These are for you, Erwin. Thanks.”

For a moment, Erwin seems lost. He looks between you, Erica, and Mittens. You're worried for a moment, but then a smile slowly works its way onto Erwin's face. As he takes the gifts into his hands he looks at them, and you can’t see his expression because his face is downcast, but then he looks up. His face is wet.

“Thank’n yous, you…” He laughs a little, wiping his face with his sleeve. ”Been a long time since’n I’ve gotten gifts like these’ns… You, both of you, now, you both are very nice’n kids. If you need anything, and I mean’n anything – you just call me, y’hear? I’ll always be aroun’ to come and help’n you. Still a Ranger, this’n man!” He chuckles, and you can't help but join in.

The three of you share a tender moment, ending with a large group hug. You realize as you wave goodbye to him that your action of giving gifts to Erwin may have meant more to him then you will ever know. He sends you off with many good wishes and smiles, with promises to meet again. You hope so.

You find yourself having come full circle: You’re back at the Trainer House and Medical Center, but this time you’re DEFINITELY leaving for the Tour. You turn to Dani, asking where Erica is supposed to meet the two of you. Apparently the two have been texting with great frequency – Erica has been pretty bored in her hospital bed.

“I’m not sure… She said she would meet us near the front – Ah! There she is!” You look over to where Dani is pointing, and sure enough there’s Erica. Except she’s… getting yelled at by a nurse?

You’ve spotted Erica, yes, but who is that nurse? And…. Why is she talking so sternly with Erica?

Dani nudges you, eyes not leaving the little scene unfolding in the middle of the Center. “Grey, do you think we should check on Erica…?” You give a little nod. You begin striding forward and... Dani lets you take the lead on this one.

The nurse, a tall blonde, has come around from the front desk and has effectively backed Erica against a wall of the center. You only make out angry bits and pieces of the conversation, and there’s lots of finger-wagging going on. What could have happened? Did Erica get in trouble? Is she not supposed to leave the Center yet…?
You get within hearing distance of the blonde. “… And you have no idea what kind of people they are! For all you know they could be taking you out in the forests to use as bait,” Not much longer you’re standing behind her as she continues her tirade, arms gesticulating wildly. “… And you’re just getting out of the hospital and you are in no position to even be…” Erica has been staring off to the side during most of this little rant, her arms crossed and a slight sad look to her face. Yeah… you don’t know who this nurse is, but you aim to find out.

“Excuse me…?” You reach out, tapping the nurse on the shoulder from behind. She doesn’t even turn to face you completely, just swipes a hand at you with a “There’s another nurse at the desk, I’m busy.”

You try again. “ExCUSE me, miss… nurse!?”

She stands up straight this time, her fists going to her sides. Ooh, she’s an angry one all right. “Listen…. SIR.” A lot of emphasis on that last word as she turns to face you. “I’m in the middle of a very important conversation right now and I’m going to need you to be patient an…-”

“Yeah, with our friend.” You lean to the side, catching the glance of Erica who has a very surprised look on her face. “Erica, is she bothering you….? What happened?”

The nurse places a hand lightly on your chest as she moves back and tries to get your attention again. “Hold on, you two are the ones trying to lead Erica back out there…?”

You back up a bit, getting some distance from this angry healthcare worker, and then face her, arms crossed and your impatience plain on your face. “No, we’re not the ones ‘leading’ her anywhere – we’re the ones that saved Erica from the Gastly, and then we offered to help her by touring together. Is there something wrong with that…?”

It’s interesting, because the nurse – Ah, her name is ‘Elice’ on her nametag – because Elice is wearing gloves. It’s not cold, though. That aside, you have to give it to her: the leather gloves really add to her tough girl act. You can actually hear them rustle as she tightens her fists in anger.

“Something wrong with dragging a girl that’s just getting over the side-effects of a ghost attack back out into danger…? Something wrong with dragging a girl, who was robbed of everything she had, out into that danger completely unprepared…?” She narrows her eyes as she crosses her own arms. Her words are spit out like venom. You imagine that if you held up your ‘dex right now she’d register as an Arbok.

“Oh, no. There’s NOTHING wrong with ANY of that," she shrugs her shoulders a bit to punctuate this last bit, "...if you’re an asshole trying to take advantage of a down-on-her-luck trainer.”

Damn. Elice used “Sheer Cold.” It was super effective.

You run a hand down your face. Elice had a double dosage of bitch-flakes today; and as much as you would really like to tell her that, you know you shouldn’t. A little voice, perhaps a voice of reason, tells you that she’s probably just overprotective. Maybe they know each other. You take a deep breath.

“Listen,… Elice,” She grunts. “Erica wants to go on the tour, and she’s going to have to leave eventually if she wants to complete it. There will always be ghosts, and always be criminals – nobody can change that. But we can try and help Erica – and that’s what Dani and I have both done.” You pull out a container ball. “This right here? It contains a bunch of stuff that I bought. For Erica. Today. With my own money.” You toss it at Elice and she catches it, still eyeing you angrily. “And no expectation of getting it back soon. Why? Because I’m a nice person, and so is Dani. We’re not assholes, and I have no idea who you are to say otherwise.”

There are a couple moments of silence. Elice looks at the ball, then you, and then Erica. “So, Erica… Is it true? You wanted to go? You STILL want to go on a Tour after all that happened?”

Erica nods her head. “Yes. I want to go. I still want to be a trainer… and I already have a Paras, and they have starters too. We can do it, Elice.”

Elice softens a bit at that. “Look… I’m just worried about you – I don’t want to see you wander in here every day looking like you did…” Her tone fires right back up, though. “I need to know you, all of you, are really ready.”

Dani pips up for the first time from behind you. “We are ready. How do we prove that to you?”
“Battle me. Each of you can use your one Pokémon, one by one, until you beat my Audino.”

Alright. If she wants to battle all three of us – then she gets to battle all three of us!

>>>>

The four of you gather at a tiny battling field outside the house, with you, Dani, and Erica huddled together trying to frantically come up with a battle plan.

Dani is rolling her pokeball around in her hands nervously, and Erica is crouched down next to her Paras – Mossimer. Neither of them are too confident, but you know better. “Grey… I haven’t had any chance to train Vlad yet. I don’t even know what moves he knows other than Nightshade!”

Yeah, okay – You’re not exactly sure what you’re going to do. You just need to think of a plan!

“Okay, okay… Well, we know that he can fight some. We just need a way to communicate with him quickly… Damnit. If only Vlad could speak English or something, I could just tell him to….” Your hands smack your face with a sudden force, and the girls look up at you in surprise. “I’m such a genius! Not really, but seriously – We’ll use Mittens! Mittens can help us tell the Pokémon what to do!”

You, Dani, and Erica are now in a semi-circle around your three starters. Mittens has a quizzical look to her – wondering what the commotion is about, most likely. Vlad just sits there, cheeping every so often. Mossimer just…. He clicks. And there’s something in the dirt that must be tasty.

“Okay, Mittens. We’re going to be battling someone. Are you ready?” She gives a firm nod. “We need your help in finding out what Paras and Vlad can do, though. Can you read my mind and then show that to them?” Again, she nods.

“Vlad hungry. Vlad say hungry now.” Dani breaks off a bit of jerky and tosses it to him. “He still hungry.” You get the feeling Vlad is kind of a dick.

The battlefield is an old, dusty thing. You can practically hear the shouts of years of trainers – taste their sweat in the air, feel the tingling on your skin of electric attacks going off. Your first trainer battle – and you’re going to win!

“Right, Mittens?” Your little cat waddles onto the field. She turns around, lifting a paw to you – and you give her a thumbs-up in return.

“Yes, TrainerGrey. We win. Mittens win. Mittens super partner!” A feeling of happy confidence trickles into your head from your little partner. You get the feeling that having a direct emotional connection has really helped your bonding this far.

Elice takes her starting position opposite you before releasing her Audino – a squat, pink Pokémon with a calming smile on its face. Doesn’t look very frightening – but you know appearances can be deceiving….

Elice calls out to you, a bit of a sneer on her face. “You ready, ya little punk?”

“Damn straight!” And so the battle begins.

>60 v 25

You project a mental image of Mittens leering at the Audino. A second later she dashes towards the Audino on all fours. She stops a few meters away, raising her haunches and letting out an angry, frightening glare. A bit of the residual mental wave that Mittens looses hits you, and a chill runs down your spine. However, you watch the Audino noticeably shrink away and hesitate as Elice tries to command it.

“Don’t let it get to you, Audino! Use growl!”
The Audino lets loose a growl, but it doesn’t seem very effective. It must have been too shaken up.

The first step: Startle the Audino and get the momentum of the fight in your favor. Done.
Second step: Break out the big guns.

“Mittens?”

“Yes, TrainerGrey?”

It’s odd, not talking aloud. In the real world you watch as Mittens dances around the Audino, swiping at the Healer as it backs away while only offering weak swipes in response. In your mind, it's like having a conversation on every level possible. “I want you to attack it with your mind. I know we haven’t practiced it, but you can do it. It’s afraid and weak right now – just give it your all!”

Mittens doesn’t respond, but the feelings of understanding and determination carry over. She stops her attacks, backing away a bit. Then, slowly, you feel a bit of the mental strain yourself as you watch Mittens rise onto her back legs. She begins to sway softly while holding out her forelegs. You can feel it building, and a sort of mental energy coils around the Espurr like a mental inferno, or a wave about to overflow from a teacup. She… might be overdoing it on the “give it your all” part.

Her little voice, strained with exertion, rings in your mind again. “Mittens… No… Can do it… Too much hold, TrainerGrey…!”

She’s pawing at Grey’s head and chest, shaking him gently. I kneel down next to her, gathering her up softly into my arms. “Hey, hey; it’s okay. He’s just asleep or something. You won, Mittens!” She looks up at that. “You won the match!”

I can tell that Elice cares about Erica – she practically forces us to take some money for winning the match – she just has a really bad way of showing it.

I laugh a little, bouncing Vlad up and down on my head. “We’ll be fine, Elice. Right, Erica?”

The one thing I have noticed thus far about Erica is that she’s quiet, even when she speaks up. “Yes. I promise, Elice. We’ll call if we get into any trouble – but not you, we’ll call a Ranger.” Elice actually smiles at that. “And we have Dani here to kick ass, and Mittens. Oh, and Grey is here, too.” Grey gives a fake angry look and we all laugh. “We’ll be in as much danger as any other trainer, and a lot less if I have anything to say about it!” Elice laughs along this time. Everyone’s smiling… and it’s good. Yeah, Erica doesn’t say much, and she’s soft-spoken; but she seems to have a nice personality so far.

>>>>

It really surprises me how so much of this initial journey has been about saying goodbyes. Saying goodbyes to my old home, my old life; saying goodbye to people I just met… It’s scary, but really exciting at the same time.

>>>>

You are Grey, and you’re out in the wilds.

The three of you set a hard pace, hoping to get clear of the city and deep into the wilds before you set up camp. By your estimates you’re about an hour and a half out from the nearest Ranger Station, and three hours walk from the city proper. The River is close, the grasses closer, and there are pockets of woods all around.

You settle for the grasslands.

Erica and Dani decide that they want to finish setting up camp and settling in for the night, but you need to get this energy out of your bones.

You’ve got a Starter, yes; but now it’s time to really catch your first true wild Pokémon.

If you’re going to be honest with yourself, there’s something you’d really like to find: A growlithe. Fire types like that don’t have the widest range, and they can be migratory as they age, but…. Juveniles and breeding pairs have been known to visit areas like this. You know from prior research and looking through Erwin’s book that burnt patches of ground are a tell-tale sign. They like to hole up in abandoned turtwig or diglett burrows, they’re meat eaters…

You need to get some height.

>93

You find a manageable tree, a gnarled old oak, and start climbing. You get about mid-tree, giving you a pretty good look around the grasses and wildflowers about you.

Hm. Interesting.

>>>>

You stand up, brushing soot from your knees and hands. There was a burn spot, sure enough. The question is – what kind of fire type produced it? Thankfully, there were tracks. Time to follow them.

Well, you’re not the BEST tracker in the world by any stretch. But tonight? You certainly feel like it. There are moments when you’re tracing the path of bent grass and soot stains with your eyes and you can practically see the growlithe moving here previously. You’re crouched low, Mittens following behind you and Vlad circling above you. You make your way through flower, brush, grass,… Then, finally, you find it. A burrow, tucked under a rotting log rolled over a shallow ditch. The pawprints lead into it directly.

How to get it out…? Your first instinct is to pull out your pokedex and lure it out with a mimicked growlithe cry. Your first instincts are usually right, so time to set up a trap…

You and Vlad are perched a short distance away from the entrance to the burrow, watching Mittens as she sits just outside it. “Alright… Come on out, little Growlithe…!” You think to yourself as you activate the “wild cry” feature of your ‘Dex. A playful “yipping” emits from the device. You wait a few minutes before doing it again. A few more minutes, then again. This repeats for a while until, finally…

Just at the edge of your vision – a tiny, striped orange form appears at the edge of the burrow. You mentally reach out to Mittens. “Mittens, send happy thoughts to it. Happy. Calm. Like this.” You think on happiness and calmness, filling your mind with memories evoking those emotions. Mittens gives a quick confirmation, then sets to work.

It works, slowly. You watch as the growlithe inches its way out of the hole, sniffing the air around Mittens. She just quietly mewls, nervously watching as the tiny tiger-dog makes its way into your line of sight. Finally out, it addresses Mittens now, barking and yipping while slightly wagging its tail.

You have a theory. Normally, Pokémon are able to pick up on the light and heat that emits from the targeting mechanism of a ball pre-lock. Fire types are naturally, well, warm – right?

Mittens and the Growlithe paw and play with one another a bit, throwing your aim off a bit – but nothing you can’t work with. You set the reticule on the hind quarters of fiery target, counting down the seconds until lock. No reaction. Maybe your theory is correct? You keep your arm straight, following the little orange ball as it darts around, barking. Mittens is doing a great job of distracting him… Not much longer…

3…. 2… 1….

You stand up, rearing your arm back. The Growlithe’s ears stand at attention as it rotates on its legs to face you. In a second its teeth are bared as it lowers onto its haunches, embers burning through sharp teeth.

By then it’s already too late.

There’s a flash of light, and then the familiar wobbling and “click!” that accompanies a catch.
