You are First Lieutenant Renard de Velde, a newly-commissioned officer of the Gallian Army. Less than a month ago, the Autocratic East Europan Imperial Alliance declared war on… everyone, really. Gallia hasn't been hit hard yet, but there have been a few skirmishes, such as the one that saw nearly a whole convoy of people killed. Only you survived to make your way to a nearby village that also serves as a military base.

You stand before the Crispy Boar, the village's public house. You left your equipment, including the items you recovered from your first two kills, in your room at the local inn. It doesn't have hot water, but it does have running water, which is better than most soldiers can expect. Now that you've officially moved in, you're ready to mingle with your new comrades.

Even just walking up the street, you could hear the party going on. People must be treating Major Lenier's recall order like a surprise vacation. You feel a little bad getting time off so soon, but you did almost get blown up and you did kill two enemy soldiers on your first day. That's got to be worth more than the standard bounty right?

Besides, you need to meet your new team. If the party is anywhere as big as it sounds like from the outside, they must be somewhere in the pub. It shouldn't be too hard to find them.

This is your current team:

Vanessa Kreuss: Vanessa joined the military when she couldn't find any other work. Having none of the required training or talent - and being a Darcsen - she became a scout since the job required the least qualifications. In spite of this, she has not run away or even thought about deserting and fully plans on staying with the army
Potential - Determination: When she fails an action, she gains a +15 bonus to her next roll. This effect is not cumulative.

Nina Stroheim: Nina joined the military in order to pay for studies. Now a certified nurse, she was asked to pay back her debt to the motherland by joining the military. She's still inexperienced and has trouble dealing with the rigours of combat, but she becomes quite professional when delivering first aid.
Potential - Emergency Treatment: Gains +15 to movement and evasion when delivering treatment to a wounded patient.

Jetje Leifstel: Jetje is the current successor to a prestigious and respected fencing school. Although she has only ever participated in sports tournaments, she did well enough during the enlistment exams to qualify as a military fencer. This has somewhat alienated her from her instructors and peers, many of whom have come to accept that the age of the sword is over and who prefer to use fencing for sportsmanship rather than bloodshed.
Potential - Steel Wall: Her defense applies against all attacks, including explosives and anti-materiel weapons.

You pull the pub's heavy mahogany doors open. It's a good thing this building is huge, because it looks like just about everyone's here.

The tables are lined around the pub's walls and nearly all of them are occupied with people eating, drinking or gambling. There's a fireplace at the back, but all the ragnite lamps still make the whole room look blue. The people who aren't crowding the tables are dancing in the middle of the room, pounding the floor to the rhythm of some very impressive fiddlers. Some people are wearing civilian clothes, some are in military uniforms and some are in dishevelled military uniforms that wouldn't pass muster even in the most laid-back squad. The bar's at the back, right next to the fireplace.

You need to find some way to find and wrangle your team. Their files had pictures, so you know what they look like, but this place is absolutely packed. It's not going to be as easy as picking out a target on the battlefield. Then again, you're a sniper. You don't go for the easy targets.

You patrol the pub, trying to look as casual as possible. There's nothing quite as awkward as one guy walking around, trying to find people he doesn't know. Fortunately, all the customers are too busy having fun to pay too much attention to you.

You spot a blonde woman arm wrestling with soldiers. If the pile of ducats sitting in front of her is any indication, she's doing quite well. She's not wearing a Gallian uniform, but you definitely recognize the face of your new fencer, Corporal Jetje Leifstel. You could go up to her now and introduce yourself, maybe ask her if she knows the rest of your team, or you can swallow your pride go ask the bartender for help.

You found one of your subordinates, so you might as well introduce yourself. Besides, she might help you find the others. You walk up to her table and wave to catch her attention. She turns and spots the insignia and waves her companions off. They just turn around towards another table, but they at least give you some semblance of privacy.

"Corporal Leifstel, right?" You ask. "First Lieutenant Renard de Velde. I'll be your new command officer."

"Sir." She stands to salute. "Corporal Jetje Leifstel of the Gallian Army, formerly of the Leifstel Fencing College. It's a pleasure to meet you."

"Likewise, corporal." You return her salute. "Your record seems quite impressive. How have you been handling yourself so far."

"As well as can be expected, I suppose," she says. "Most of our missions have been scouting and reconnaissance, so my talents haven't been much use. I've been in a scrap once, and that's it. Honestly, I'm looking forward to getting into the war proper."

"It shouldn't take much longer," you say. "With our recent loss, we'll need to field every hand we can get. As long as you can swing your sword, you'll be of use to Gallia somewhere."

"I heard about what happened to the convoy," she says. "It's impressive, what you did. Hell, your name's already on the board."

I'm going to start by giving you options based on what the characters can do to respond to a problem and let you give orders to one character a time (sniper hides, scout rushes, fencer moves forward and so forth). If that goes smoothly, I'll start adding team strategies.

"I'd like to find the rest of our team, Vanessa Kreuss and Nina Stroheim," you say. "Can you help me find them?"

"Let's see…" Leifstel looks around the pub for the soldiers you mentioned. At least she seems to be able to recognize them.

"There's Vanessa."

She points to a lone Darcsen sitting at the bar. You can't see her face from this angle, but she seems to be staring down at her drink or at the bar. A lot of the other Darcsen are acting sociable enough, even if it's just with other Darcsen, so it might just be her personal preference to stay alone.

"And there's Nina."

Leifstel points to a young red-haired woman who's just left the dance floor to sit down, also at the bar. She stretches her arms and motions for the bartender to bring her something.

"Excellent, let's go meet them," you say. "So what's the board?"

"Snipers' board." Leifstel points to a wooden board covered in paper sheets. "We've got twelve snipers here. They use the board to keep track of their kills. Someone added your score in earlier to day."

You dismiss the board and focus on what's more important. The kills will happen on their own once you know what your new comrades are more capable of.

"Vanessa! Nina!" Leifstel calls out to the two soldiers. "Looks like we've been assigned to the same team. This man's our new boss."

Stroheim turns to appraise you, but doesn't make much of a fuss. Kreuss, on the other hand, practically jumps out of her seat and salutes. You just wave her down.

"We'll take care of protocol later," you say. "Besides, there's not a soldier here who wouldn't get failed on discipline. I just wanted to meet my team before our first mission."

"Right, let's get some chairs then." Stroheim starts rearranging the chairs into a small square so you can all at least pretend you're sitting at a table together.

"Yes, sir!" Kreuss, on the other hand, scuttles forward.

The four of you sit down and you order a pint of beer. You'll have to make note to scrounge yourself up a table or come here before the rush so you can have proper meetings in the future.

"I suppose we should go over the basics," you say. "I'm a certified sniper, and the rest of you qualified as a fencer, an engineer and a scout, right?"

"It- it's not like I really certified," Kreuss says. "It's just, the recruiter at Kreuss - ah, I'm from Kreuss, so that's why people call me Kreuss - said anyone could be a scout if they wanted to and I couldn't find any other jobs, so…"

"I passed the shooting and grenade-throwing classes," Stroheim says. "Mostly, I'm just a nurse, so I'd rather you keep me on first aid duty and such. I mean, I'll fight to save my life, but I didn't exactly go to nursing school because I wanted to learn how to kill people. That would just be creepy."

"I'm afraid I can't make any promises until we're on the battlefield," you say. "But if it makes you feel better, I don't want the only medic on my team rushing blindly into gunfire."

"If push comes to shove, I'll just use Jetje as a human shield."

"I have an actual shield, you know," Leifstel says.

"More layers is always better."

Kreuss just watches the exchange.

You drink your beer and ponder your next order of business. You notice your team mates seem familiar with each other. That's not necessarily a bad thing. Discipline varies a lot in the Gallian military, especially when the militia becomes involved, but you did graduate from Lanseal. You have a reputation to uphold.

"Now that we've met, let's go over the rules." You chug down what's left of your beer. "When we're off duty, act casual. No salutes, first name basis, that sort of thing. You can start by calling me Renard. On duty, I need you to show utmost discipline and obey orders to the letter. If you have any suggestions, bring them to me, but once my mind is made up, my decisions are final. Are we clear?"

"Of course, Renard," Jetje says.

"Sure thing," Nina says. "That suits my style better anyway."

Vanessa just nods enthusiastically.

"In that case, let's get along," you say. "Now, we'll have to set up a system to communicate in the field. I can keep track of all of you with my scope, so we can develop hand signals. It's not much, but it'll allow me to keep track of the battle. Vanessa, you're our scout, so this is going to be mostly your job."

She practically turns green, but nods anyway.

"I'll do my best, sir! Huh- Renard. Renard, I mean."

"We'll figure out a general strategy for independent action afterwards." You turn to Nina. "Nina, this is going to be especially important for you since you can make medical decisions and I can't. I'll trust your judgment on which wounds can be ignored and which can't."

"I've been in a few battles," Nina says. "I know when to cut it close and when to cut my losses. Don't worry about it."

"Jetje, you'll probably be assigned to high-risk tasks, but I don't want you doing anything stupid. Make sure to always stay near one of us and get out if the bullets are too much to handle."

"I don't plan on dying," Jetje says. "I know how risky my job is and I know how to minimize that risk."

"Good. Those are the basic rules," you say. "The Major seemed in a hurry to deal with any Imperial soldiers in the general area, so we'll probably be assigned to a mission soon. We'll organize our training depending on how things go."

The three of them nod in agreement and you decide to leave them for now. It's now rapidly approaching two days since the last time you slept and the ambush earlier in the day wasn't exactly relaxing.

You decide to check out the snipers' board on your way out. It'll give you an idea of what your colleagues are capable of.

The board is actually quite impressive. You've got the last spot with your two kills, but most of the other snipers have between three and five kills. Considering how long the war has been going on and that it hasn't really hit this part of Gallia yet, it's a very impressive showing.

The first place is by far the most impressive. Someone named Ernestine has managed to top forty kills in just under a month. Either she managed to wipe out multiple squads or she's been out there every day looking for Imperials. You're not sure anyone around here is deployed that often.

"You're Renard, right?" A short Darcsen girls walks up from behind you. "Good job on taking Last Place. Henry practically broke down in tears of joy when he saw a new kill sheet. Between the two of us, I don't think it'll last. No matter how bad you are, there's no way you can do worse than him."

"And you are…"

She jabs a finger at the first place kill sheet.

"Ernestine Whitefields. I'm from Whitefields, so-" Her eyes flicker to Vanessa. "Well, I think you've already heard that one before. I hope you enjoy fighting the rest of the crew for second place."

We're a first LT, not some backroom Colonel. The vast majority of our time is going to be spent out in the field, it's not like coordinating a 4 man team is going to stop us from sniping, after all we're a full quarter of our squad's firepower.

40 is a lot of men to be sure. We don't need to overhaul her to prove we're equal though, just keep up or make a steady gain. I'm pretty sure no-one expects us to kill 60-70 imps in a month.

"I'm sure I'll have a great time."

Ernestine smiles, then starts laughing.

"That's right! That's right!" She says. "A sniper should act like this. If you lose your cool over something like this, you won't get anything done. I hope you can back up your attitude."

Ernestine waves goodbye and joins a group of soldiers who don't quite give her the cold shoulder, but who obviously aren't interested in being friendly with her.

You, meanwhile, return to your room so you can bask in the bliss of sleep.

The sound of someone banging on your door wakes you up.

"Renard! It's Jetje!" You hear your fencer's voice call for you. "The Major called a meeting!"

You growl and slowly crawl out of your bed.

"I'm coming!" You get up start getting dressed. "I'll be out in a minute."

You put on your uniform and check in the mirror to make sure it's up to military standards. Satisfied that you're presentable, you head out to meet Jetje and go to the briefing.

"So I guess you'll be waking me up from now on?"

"My training regimen starts early," she says. "It's one of the perks of being an athlete. I don't think Nina and Vanessa would be up for it."

"I suppose I'll have to fix that," you say. "But it can wait. Have you heard any rumours?"

"Nothing concrete, just that the major has a plan," Jetje says. "I'll get the team together while you attend the briefing."

"Thanks. Wait for me by the training grounds. That's as good a place as any."

The major's staff and the rest of the officers are all waiting for you at the improvised headquarters, but they haven't started yet. The major is eating a croissant and sipping coffee while his adjutants put up maps of the region. You take a seat at the back of the room.

"Let's get started," the major says. "Since our reinforcements have not arrived as scheduled, I've rearranged the assignments and made some field promotions. You can gawk over your shiny new ranks after we're done."

The major then points to a spot on the local map.

"This is Troye, our current location." He points out three other areas. "These locations are suspected Imperial bases. We expect they're quite small, but we also suspect they have some kind of command structure to arrange their attacks on Gallian soil. We also have no actionable intelligence. Our current plan is to kick the hornet's nest and see what happens. We'll send one team of soldiers to each of these locations. The rest of our forces will patrol the nearby roads and villages. We believe that, if we can take out a team of Imperial soldiers and they fail to report in, other Imperial agents will be forced to move in order to investigate. Hopefully, we'll be able to catch them then."

"Lieutenant de Velde!" The major calls out to you. "Since your team is new, you get to decide how you want to get them acclimated to each other. Which location do you want to hit?"

The first location is a major road you're somewhat familiar with. The military doesn't use it, but merchants do. It would be a major disruption to the region's economy if the Empire attacks it.

The second location is an old hunting lodge. It hasn't been used in years and it's hidden deep in the woods. It's the perfect spot for a safe house.

The third location is an abandoned mine. There's been talk of reopening it thanks to new mining technologies, but nothing solid. Since the Empire is after ragnite, they might have sent prospectors there.

Reconnaissance in force is the best kind of reconnaissance

Best to get our first team experience in what will likely be usual combat conditions. We're not really a close quarters unit so I'd rule out the mine.

Fighting inside a mine would put Jetje in a good mood, but it wouldn't do you or the rest of the team any favours.

The road would give you a chance to get even for the ambush you went through, but it's a long shot. There might be another ambush, but there's no way of knowing how long it would take you to find it and if there are any enemies, they could run off anywhere.

The hunting lodge, however, is a good spot. You can sneak up on it and any Imperials there will be stuck inside. They'll have good cover, and they'll probably be prepared, but that's what grenades are for. Besides, it's a more likely safe house than the other targets.

"We'll take the hunting lodge, sir," you say. "If they have a command structure, they're more likely to be there."

"Then you have your orders, Lieutenant," the major says. "From now on, you're officially the commanding officer of team 4."

The major assigns the rest of the locations and sets up patrol routes. You let your mind drift as the briefing goes on and then go to meet your team.

As you requested, they immediately stand at attention. Vanessa can't quite stop shaking, but she gets it close.

"Attention soldiers!" You shout. "From this moment on, we are operating under the name of team 4. We have also received our first mission. We will be scouting out an old hunting lodge in a nearby forest. We suspect the lodge is being used by Imperial troops as a safehouse. We are performing reconnaissance in force. If there are any Imperial troops there, we will eliminate them. The major hopes that other Imperial forces in the area will act if one of their teams goes silent. We'll catch them then. Is that understood?"

"Yes, sir!"

We need it the most here. Gives us a better chance of taking out the most important threat that appears in one shot.

"One last thing," you say. "Corporal Kreuss!"

"Yes, sir!"

She practically jumps out of her skin when you call her name.

"You'll be on point for this mission," you say. "Make every single one of your shots count. We can't afford to fail. The Imperial forces on Gallian soil must be removed before the Empire begins its invasion of northern Gallia in earnest."

"I'll do my best, sir."

"Good." You relax your stance. "Let's get breakfast. We head out in one hour. This is going to be our first mission together and it's going to determine how we work from here on out. Let's all do our best to complete our mission."

You dismiss your team and get ready for your first combat mission.

That's all for today's thread. The next thread will be this Saturday at around 7PM EST. It'll be the first major battle and it will probably wrap up the prologue.

Thanks for playing!
