Next to nothing is actually known about the Foliate Alliance or the stretch of space they originated from, with what little information that does exist being acquired through spies rather than willingly given. Those spies that live to return to their employers report back two concrete facts: that every planet and asteroid in the Foliate Cluster has been terraformed into lush, green landscape, and that there exists something the Foliates call the “Greatvine” which not only connects all Foliates to one another, but somehow facilitates their flawlessly concerted military maneuvers.

Luckily for you, you’re only dealing with one Foliate warship at the moment instead of a whole fleet. Not so luckily for you, it’s a Foliate Dreadnaught that outclasses your vessel several times over, its captain is someone who hates you personally with a furious passion, and you’re stuck in the bowels of a planet that is rapidly falling to pieces. On the bright side, you finally got all the pieces of Scaly Dan’s treasure map, so all you have left to do is find the damn thing. If you survive, that is.

Which you will, for you are Captain Valdessa Atroxius, fearsome pirate captain of the vessel The Sol Regret, leader of the most scurrilous scalawags on the last sea, nemesis to the invincible Admiral Kytan Graveside, and slipperiest voidsnake that ever lived.

You try to make your escape back out the tunnels you came in on, only to find them sealed off, leaving the only viable exit for you one on the opposite end of the chamber where you killed that…thing that’s been running this place for Boros knows how long. Heading through, you find yourself…on a ship’s bridge? The seats and terminals are all clearly designed for Nagas and looking out the massive window in front of you reveals miles and miles of scrap metal and dead ships breaking apart and drifting through space, whatever power holding them all in place dead alongside this ship’s previous owner.

“Well roll me down a hill and call it an avalanche.” Koma remarks “There never was no planet t’begin with. Just ships bunched up against other ships.”

“Captain!” Cernu’s voice crackles in your ear once more. “We must make our escape! I can attempt to teleport you, as was accomplished accidentally last time we faced this foe.”

“Not just yet, Cernu, I think I found something to keep those Foliate bastards off us for a while.”

“You, uh, you know how to fly this thing, boss?” Repo inquires, helping Audi to her feet as she slowly regains consciousness.

“Hey, it’s Nagan tech, right? How hard can it be? Everyone just find a seat and get comfy.” You reassure her as you slither into the captain’s chair.

Now, while you don’t know much about ancient Nagan technology, you do know it’s fairly standard for all Nagan ships to be completely controllable from the captain’s chair due to your species’ crippling paranoia. And sure enough, after a few awkward moments of readjusting the chair’s height and turning on the internal heater (not to self: get one of these for your chair), you finally bring up the holo-control panel. Now, in order to get this thing moving, you probably just have to push–

A lance of pure energy hurtles forward, boiling holes through several ships before it finally explodes in brilliant violent hues.

–right. Not that one. Save that one for later, though, because that was pretty awesome. Maybe if you hit this thing right here–

A pulse of raw kinetic force billows out from the ship, slamming the scrap around you into each other, leaving only empty space around you.

–wasn’t what you wanted, but at least it cleared a path for you.

“Is Captain knowing what she is doing?” Lyka sounds almost nervous through her broken accent.

“Don’t worry, I got it. All I have to do is–” You toggle a few switches and slam one of the holographic levers fully forward, and your new vessel finally lurches into action, albeit with much protest “– that. See?”

“What is it that the meatling desires?” A voice demands harshly.

“I think the real question here is what do you want, fernface? You can’t have come all the out here for just one girl.”

“The errant growth belongs to the Greatvine. It shall either be healed and reintroduced to our grove or pruned to keep our secrets safe.”

“She -belongs- to no one, pal, and she -chose- to join my crew! And neither of us give two damns about whatever your secrets are! I don’t know where you get off telling a she is better off shoved in a box or dead over livin’ the life she chose, but if you don’t just run on back to your grapevine grove or whatever right now, I can promise you you’ll regret it.”

You feel a predatory smirk tug at your lips, giving the Foliate a glimpse of your fangs.

“You may know your plants, buddy, but you clearly don’t know Nagas. You see, we kinda excel at the whole kill and conquer thing, and this ship is more than a match for yours. I’ll give you one last warning: stand down before I crack your ship in two like a nut.”

Your foe narrows his eyes at your proclamation.

“Such stubborn meat. There is nothing more to be said to the likes of you.”

With that, the commscreen vanishes, leaving you once more with a clear view of the Foliate ship you are on a collision course with. Right now, it appears to be more focused on subduing the Sol Regret, possibly not even realizing you aren’t aboard it.

“Uhh, you okay there, boss?” Repo asks in the following silence.

“I’m fine, why do you–“ You realize your hands have been clenched around your chair’s armrests this entire time, so tightly that the ends have begun to warp and crack under the pressure. “–oh.“

Doesn’t matter, right now you’ve got a forest to burn.

You begin hitting every button, toggling every switch, and slamming forward every lever the holo-panel in front of you holds with little rhyme or reason save for being sure to mash that energy lance button multiple times. The result is terrifying to behold as your ship lights up with fury. Missile pods open their hatches and let fly their massive payloads, energy crackles across space and slams into the Foliate vessel, and your ship itself hurtles this way and that thanks to your reckless button pressing. Within the bridge, lights flicker and terminals go dark thanks to massive power drain your arsenal demands and klaxons begin to sound.

“Think ya overloaded the reactor.” Koma states, unnaturally calm in all this. “Would probably be a smart idea t’be leaving.”

You give him a nod and ring up your own ship. “Cernu? I could use that pickup right about now.”

“Acknowledged. Focusing on the missing crew presently. Brace yourselves for teleportation.”

Oh dammit! Thinking fast, you leap out of your chair and tackle Repo and Audi, who are thankfully right next to each other.

“What’s the big idea you fat fuckin’ slug?!” Repo shouts from underneath your weight.

“I forgot to tell Cernu about you two.” Is the only explanation you can muster in such short time.

“What’s that got to do with–“ She doesn’t get anything more out before she feels herself getting pulled through the Dub through you.

It’s not very pleasant for you either. That same uncomfortable sensation of the entirety of your being – past, present, and future – getting squeezed through a pinhole, compounded by the fact that you’re trying to drag two others with you. You close your eyes and tighten your grip, refusing to let those two go even as your very self threatens to stretch too far and shatter into a thousand pieces. The steady pulsing of the Dub gets louder than usual this time, threatening to overtake you entirely and all you can do is hold on tight and grit your teeth.

Then nothing.

Silence.

Well, not quite silence. A gentle breeze sends leaves rustling and birds chirp lazily overhead. You open your eyes to find yourself in grassy field that seems to stretch on forever. The occasional tree or boulder dots the landscape, but for the most part, it’s nothing more than tall grasses and wildflowers. You don’t think you’re aboard the Foliate vessel, as there is no one else here and it lacks the warm, moist jungle atmosphere you felt last time you boarded their ship.

“What happened? Where are we?” Cernu sits up next you, looking and sounding quite exhausted.

“I did.” You swivel around to see a massive Foliate sitting on a boulder. Easily fifteen feet tall and with a face nearly obscured by the bushes that make up his facial, a smile managing to poke through what little remains. “While that maneuver of yours was quite daring and that distraction your friend here managed probably put them off kilter enough to squeeze by, traveling by Dub when the Alliance is nearby is always risky business. I feared them grabbing you again, so I figured I should just do it first.” He chuckles at his own little joke.

“From where I’m standing, one kidnapper ain’t much better than another.” You return, hand resting on one of your pistols and position yourself between him and Cernu.

“Ah, excuse my manners!” The green giant takes a sweeping bow. “I am but a simple traveler who happened to be at the wrong place at the right time. Rest assured, I hold no ties to the Foliate Alliance and have brought you here for a simple talk is all, if you would indulge this old man.”

“First tell me where the rest of my crew is and then we might have something to talk about.”

“Rest assured they are safe, good captain. You were the only two the Alliance desired, and therefore the only two I was forced to intercept. I also took the liberty of sending your two stowaways along with the rest, I hope you don’t mind.”

You ease up a little, but your hand remains rested on the pistol. “Alright, fine. You did right by my crew and you haven’t done anything to me or demanded that I give up Cernu yet. What’d you want from me, anyways?”

“You? I apologize, friend, but I only wish to talk with the sprout that brought you along. After all, she represents the future of our species. You see, she is the first of our kind in millennia to take root outside of the Alliance and the influence of the Greatvine. I simply had to see her.”

Cernu pouts and leans herself against you, arm hooked within yours. “If that was meant to be a proposition, I shall have you know I am already spoken for. By the very one you brush off so readily at that.”

He laughs and holds up his hands in surrender. “Relax, relax! I just brought you to this lovely worldship of mine to talk. To explain to the young one here why she is so sought after by the rest of our kind.” He regards Cernu directly, his face losing its genial nature and adopting a determined expression. “You have memories, yes? Memories that are not your own, of the Greatvine and your place in the Alliance?”

Cernu nods.

“But you have no idea what the Greatvine is, do you.”

She shakes her head.

“It is…a computer would probably be the best way to explain it to you. From what I gather it was meant to serve the Alliance by binding all the disparate Foliates to one another in shared thought. Not a hivemind like you might find out in the Corsis Ridge, but more of an overlay or interface that allowed communication and thought across the darkness of space. Unfortunately, somewhere along the way, either by accident or intent, the relationship reversed itself and those under the Alliance lived to serve the Greatvine instead of the other way around. The cycle fed itself, and Foliates began to think theirs was the only path, for it was the one they tread and if they tread upon it then how could it be wrong? However, they had no way to act on this shared information, as the Alliance had no means to jaunt across space as they do now.”

“That is when they met our kind, yes?” Cernu surmises, eliciting a sad sigh from the leafy giant.

“Yes. We hyperdryads had a symbiotic relationship with the navnolias, allowing us to explore space before we even had the words to describe the wonders we saw. Our kind used to ramble across the stars with reckless abandon, little one. With absolute freedom we went. The Alliance wanted that for themselves and when we refused to join their Greatvine, they took us by force.
They stole our children from us and used their talents to chase down the elders. For the longest time, I was the last free Hyperdryad, hiding in the dark corners of space.” His lazy smile returns. “Until you came along, that is.”

“Well that’s all fine and dandy, but what in the name of Ouroboros is she supposed to do with this?” You interrupt. “You can’t just whisk a gal away to some inside out tree-planet-ship-thing and then tell her the weight of her whole species lies on her shoulders!”

You outburst only cause him to smile even wider.

“That’s actually the easy part: just keep on living happily.”

“What.”

“That’s right! I told you, their whole worldview hinges on the belief that a Foliate cannot exist happily outside of the Alliance or the Greatvine. That she cannot thrive without their aid. Her continued existence and loyalty to you – a creature of meat, of all things! – is living proof of the falsehood of their beliefs. They may make up excuses in the short term for why she would reject them, but long enough exposure to you two might just be enough to bring the whole thing crashing down.” He nods towards you. “And I suppose I have you in no small part to thank for that.”

“Damn right you do.” You say, crossing your arms. “Now send me back to my ship already.”

“Anything you wanna add before we head out, Cernu?”

“Only that our new friend here is lucky that his request is so easily fulfilled, for not even the fate of my species could separate me from my captain.”

You can’t help but roll your eyes and smile at her proclamation. Such a flair for melodrama, that one.

“Well you heard the girl, get us out of her and back to our ship.”

“I am afraid I cannot send you back to that vessel specifically.” The green man says, his playful grin gone. “You see, I evaded capture not by hiding within the dark corners of space, but rather by sneaking through the shadows that exist between seconds. To everyone else, you will have disappeared for a blink of an eye at most.”

“That’s neat and all, but I don’t see why it matters.”

“As I said before, the Alliance had intercepted your little teleportation trick. I have to let them think they succeeded if they are to suspect nothing.”

“Well that’s a load of lamia shit!”

“Don’t worry yourself, good captain, a friend of yours is warping to your location, I can send him to aid you as well.”

“Wait, ‘him’? Who exactly are you–”

“Farewell, good captain, and you too, little sprout, I believe in both of you.” That smarmy smirk of his is the last thing you see before you are whisked through the dub once more. When you feel solid ground underneath your tail, it’s grass and dirt once more and the air is thick with moisture and activity. You’re aboard the Foliate groveship once more. A low, grumbling voice behind you that sounds oddly pleased despite the throaty, baritone growling.

“Come now, Kitten, is that really any way to speak to your ‘dearest, sweetest beloveds’?” You give him an exaggerated pout as Cernu does her best to stifle a giggle.

“Enough!” He roars. “You will tell me where I am and how to return to my ship at once. I wholeheartedly refuse to tolerate your tomfoolery on this day!”

“Relax big guy, this one ain’t my fault for once. Some giant hyperdryad hiding in time or something did it.”

He raises an eyebrow at you.

“What? He did! He said he plucked you outta warpspace to help me.”

“As if I would aid an enemy of the Empire!” He scoffs.

“So what, you’re gonna let someone else capture your nemesis? How would it look on the almighty Gato-Gatoran Empire if a buncha shrubs did what their great and heroic Admiral Graveside couldn’t?”

He lets out something between a groan and growl before stomping ahead of you and Cernu.

“Very well! Let us find out way out of this place! I have the company of much finer women awaiting me.”

“And here I thought you didn’t have any other women in your life but me. But really, Kitten, multiple ‘beloveds’? You always struck me as the straight and steady kind of guy.”

“Not that it is any of your business, but it is the anniversary between my first wives and me. It would be rude and neglectful to leave any of them out.”

“First wives? As in multiple bunches of multiple wives?”

“They were my first squad back when I first earned the right to command. After our campaign against Perro the Pernicious, they fought over who had earned the right to marry me as is Gatoran custom. In order to maintain squad cohesion, I chose all of them.” You notice him staring off into the distance with a glint of nostalgia in his eye.

“If a man finds a woman honorable and strong of spirit and body and a woman finds a man worthy of loyalty and respect, nothing else matters. Why should they limit themselves?”

“Now I gotta ask, how many times did you go and get married?”

“My personal cruiser is currently staffed by eight hundred and fifty three able bodied and valiant warriors.” He says almost too fast, clearly having memorized the number.

“Eight hundred and fifty three?! Damn, Kitten, how do you even find the time to chase me through space?”

“Because I am a man worthy of eight hundred and fifty three wives.” He states with such authority you have no choice but to believe him. “Now are we going to get out of this damned forest-ship or are we going to discuss my married life until we are caught and slain?”

>>Ask Cernu for possible layout
Just clarifying this, I didn't mean for her to tap into the systems, but to ask her if she has any knowledge of the ships possible layout and such

“Alright then, how would you get out of this, Mr. ‘I’m so great at military stuff I got eight hundred wives out of it’?”

“That would be Admiral ‘I’m so great at military stuff I got eight hundred wives out of it’, and the key to a successful extraction is remaining undetected, so attempt to be someone other than yourself for a bit. Next would be to either find their hangar or nearest escape pods and use those as means of escape or to have a stealth vessel extract you. Seeing as the latter is impossible without correspondence with my crew and the former will be difficult, as the Gato-Gatoran Empire has never gone to war with the Foliate Alliance or otherwise been able to study their ships.”

“And I take it you can’t just teleport us out of here, Cernu?”

“I am afraid not. Any attempt to connect with Drasilios will result in us being rerouted back to this ship. However, I may be able to use their own navnolia to transport us around their ship. This will result in them knowing exactly where we are, unfortunately, though if I can get us to a hangar that may no longer be an issue.”

“And you know where the hangar is?”

She runs a hand through her vines nervously. “Somewhat. Much like any tree, each ship is grows differently according to its needs and environment, but also like any tree, it follows the same rules in its growth. Be it by foot or teleportation, I should be able to lead you to the general area.”

Damn, it looks like you’re kinda short on options here.

>Have Cernu teleport you into the hangar
>Have Cernu lead you there by foot
>Have Cernu trigger an alarm and take advantage of the chaos to make your own escape

“Alright Cernu, just lead us there by memory if you can. I’d rather not teleport into a giant angry mass of Foliates today.”

Your first mate gives you a determined nod. “I shall do my best, my captain!”

The journey is filled with several dead ends and roundabouts due to the nature of the groveship, but fortune is on your side, as the crew is all too busy defending themselves against the Nagan warship they don’t realize is empty to notice the three of you creeping through the underbrush.

Which isn’t to say the journey wasn’t tense. Several times you and Kytan had to hold your breaths (though not Cernu, since she doesn’t breathe oxygen in the same way you two do) as Foliates of all shapes and sizes rushed by, outfitted for war. But sure enough, Cernu’s memory paid off and you found yourself in a hangar bay, deserted save all but one ship. Before it could take off, Cernu managed to deactivate the ship and Kytan proceeded to deactivate the pilot. With his fist.

Once that was taken care of, the three of you squeezed into the cockpit meant for one vine-tentacled Foliate that apparently can’t live outside of potted soil.

“Speaking of anniversaries, this reminds me of when we first met.” You muse as Cernu tries to get the ship active and the hangar bay open. “Just you, me, and a box with all too little room, hurtling through space. There wasn’t any oversized furball, though.”

“Fortunately.” Kytan mutters. “Now let us be rid of this place so that I can go back to hunting you down.”

“I cannot!” Cernu shouts in dismay. “Something has locked me out of the system!”

The hatch of the cockpit forcibly opens itself, an all too familiar fern-filled face standing outside with a small squad of three foliates behind him.

“We meet again, errant growth. I had thought our ship intercepted an interloper traveling upon stolen secrets.”

Boros, you are so sick of this pompous asshole.

And thread archived!

Sorry about the slower pace today, folks. Some of the writing was a little hard coming to me, but I hope you enjoyed it all the same!

That's one of Kytan's first wives. They call her Lady since she's "the most delicate and refined".

Thanks for running.

Dat Kytan tho
>>
>>36315817
We need to make him our pet, he's so adorable.
>>
>>36315834
I don't think that's possible and even if it was he comes with 853 catgirl soldier wives. Can you handle those levels of cat? I know I sure can't
>>
>>36315903
The wives make it even better, they can bathe and feed him and take care of him.
>>
>>36315935
Then wouldn't he be their pet and not ours?
>>
>>36316018
They can all be our pets
>>
>>36316078
Please don't try to make our rival a pet, anon.
>>
>>36316289
To late for that, he's so fluffy and cute
>>
>>36316316
Well given you seem to have a rather unique view of him, there's no helping your fascination I suppose.
>>
>>36316078
Oh please, we can barely take care of our houseplant.
>>
>>36316441
Thats the thing, we don't have to worry about taking care of him, his wives do that for us.

While we dote on and cuddle with Cernu we use him as a cute attack dog
>>
>>36316505
Don't neglect your pets, anon. See, this is why he has over 800 wives and we only have one girlfriend who may or may not wear the pants in our relationship

>Kytan
>Cute
How?
>>
>>36317615
Have you looked at the pics OP uses for him?

They make me just want to ruffle his hair
>>
>>36317656
Now just imagine him laying in the middle of a giant catgirl cuddle puddle all of them purring and stroking his hair
>>
>>36317955
Oh hell yes we need to intrude upon him when he's like that, and then join in
>>
>>36317985
>then join in
Val isn't some kind of two timing hussy
>>
>>36318185
Nah, we shouldn't join in, we should show them up with Cernu
>>
>>36317955

>you will never snuggle the catman
I didn't need these feelings tonight
