Imperial agents have infiltrated Gallia and committed several small battles, skirmishes and ambushes. Your superior officer has organized an attack on suspected Imperial safe houses in an attempt to provoke a response from the Imperials. If your mission is successful, someone somewhere will slip up and get caught. If not, then at least you'll know where the Imperials aren't.

You volunteered your team to check out an old hunting lodge. You left your truck a few miles away from the forest and proceeded foot the rest of the way. You're currently planning your final approach on the hunting lodge. You and your team are now gathered around a map of the area.

"The map's not that great, but it'll do." You point at your current location. "This is where we are. There's a trail leading right to the lodge. It hasn't been kept in order, but it should still be visible. It should also be extremely exposed. Aside from that, we can try scouting the forest to find a better position to attack the lodge from, or make out way to this hill overlooking the lodge."

>(1/2)

>>36334652
"The trail is a deathtrap," Corporal Leifstel says, "but it could make a useful distraction if I approach from behind my shield."

"And if there are Imperials here, they'll be alerted immediately." You turn to your scout. "Your thoughts, Corporal Kreuss?"

"I-I can look around for a good position to attack from," she says. "Some place where the Imperials won't be able to see us. I think. Maybe."

Corporal Stroheim remains quiet. She won't come into play unless someone gets wounded or someone needs to take a grenade to the face, so all she can do is wait for your plan to come together.

"I might be able to do something if I can get to the hill." According to the map, it overlooks the area surrounding the lodge. "At the very least, it will give us the high ground."

>"Corporal Leifstel, we need a distraction. You'll follow the trail to the lodge."
>"Corporal Kreuss, scout out the immediate area. We're taking a stealth approach."
>"I'll take the hill. We'll attack on my signal."

"Corporal Kreuss, scout out the immediate area," you say. "We're taking a stealth approach."

"Yes, sir!"

Kreuss takes a deep breath and then darts into the forest, running from tree to tree as she gets closer and closer to the lodge. It's when she's just at the edge of the forest that you hear the all too familiar sound of a sniper rifle. Kreuss slams back into the ground. You peer through your scope to get a look at her. She weakly points her arm up towards the hill, then it falls down.

"Stroheim! Get to her now!"

The team medic is already running by the time you're done giving your order. You angle your scope up at the hill and spot a sniper reloading for another shot. Kreuss is in the bushes, so he'll need to readjust his aim, but that won't take much time. Worse, every other Imperial in the area must have heard the shot. They know something's wrong.

Leifstel is looking at you, waiting for orders.

>"Leifstel, get to the cabin. I'll take care of the sniper."

You adjust your aim on the sniper and pull the trigger. Before he can fire his rifle, your bullet goes right into his skull, killing him instantly. That's one problem solved.

Meanwhile, Stroheim has gotten to Kreuss' side and has become to apply a ragnaid treatment. You can't see her working from your position, but if she's applying treatment, that can only be a good thing.

Leifstel, for her part, is running directly to the cabin to intercept anyone who comes out. She stumbles more than once because of the forest and her heavy equipment, but she keeps going. She only stops to raise up her shield when two soldiers run out of the lodge. Both of them are Imperial troops in light armour and holding rifles. They must be scouts. Leifstel slows to meet them, but it doesn't matter now. She's close enough to slash at them.

However, your team is too far away for you to give them orders effectively, so you'll need to trust them to act independently for the moment. From your current position, you can support Leifstel and take out one of the scouts. You could also reposition to try and get a better look inside the lodge, or meet up with Kreuss and Stroheim to check up on them and maybe coordinate the fight again.

Leifstel swings her blade at one of the scouts, but misses by a hair. The two soldiers raise their rifles and fire at her, but their bullets just bounce ineffectually off her shield. The best thing you can do right now is make her life easier. You set your sights on one of the Imperial scouts and pull the trigger. Once again, you score a headshot, sending the scout down and freeing up Leifstel's movements. Now that she doesn't have to keep her shield between herself and two enemies, it'll be easier for her to attack.

You raise your head to check up on Stroheim and Kreuss. It seems Stroheim's first aid was successful. Kreuss doesn't look too good, but you can see her moving her arms and legs. She's definitely out of the fight, but she won't be out of the war.

You don't see any other reinforcements, so the sniper must have been the only watch nearby. There might be other soldiers in the lodge, but they haven't come up yet. The situation is obviously not in the Imperials' favour, so either they know something you don't or they're holing up inside the lodge to prepare for your assault.

>Take out the last scout so Leifstel can charge the cabin.

You decide to trust Leifstel to finish the job and reposition to get a better look into the lodge. You walk to the side opposite the hill - the windows are probably pointed at the better view - and move through the forest to close the distance and hopefully find a better angle. You eventually find a good spot right across from the lodge's windows.

Through one of these windows, you see another Imperial soldier, this one holding a fucking grenade. It doesn't look like he's going to throw it immediately though. He's probably waiting for his partner to die first. Not that it would make much difference in the long run.

Leifstel has just completely savaged the remaining scout. She ripped off most of his armour in one blow and he's now bleeding very profusely from the chest. He's still in the fight though, and he's raising his gun for another shot. Maybe he's hoping to get a lucky shot as his dying wish. He's put plenty of dents into Leifstel's shield, but he hasn't hit her once.

From your current position, you can take out either the engineer or the scout without a problem.

Nina Stroheim - Emergency Treatment: Gains +15 to movement and evasion when delivering treatment to a wounded patient.

Leifstel bashes the scout with her shield, sending him sprawling on the ground, then runs him through with her sword. After confirming the kill, she immediately raises her shield towards the lodge and braces herself for another attack.

You decide to save her the trouble.

You aim a bit away from the engineer to make up for the wind and the elevation, making sure to take into account the fact that there is no wind inside the lodge to further alter your bullet's trajectory, and pull the trigger. The bullet pierces through the window, then the engineer's helmet, then his skull. He drops dead and both you and Leifstel wait several long seconds in case he armed his grenade before dying. You finally relax when it's clear the lodge won't explode in a ball of blue flames.

You don't see anyone else in the lodge and Imperial reinforcements haven't ambushed you from behind yet, so it looks like you're finally clear. You get up and join Leifstel to give her a status update.

"Sir," she says.

"Kreuss took a bad hit, but I think she'll be fine," you say. "No one else has attacked us, so it looks like we're in the clear. I want the bodies of these soldiers searched. Take all their military equipment and set aside their personal effects so they can be returned eventually. After that…"

You look at the lodge, then at Kreuss and Stroheim out on the edge of the forest. There's probably some good intelligence in the lodge, so you'll be searching it. However, you don't need to return to base at any particular time, so you could just bring Kreuss to the lodge and give her time to recover.

>Get the information and return to base immediately. Kreuss can get proper treatment at the field hospital.

>888XP, 510DCT

"I think we'll let Kreuss recover in the lodge for a while, unless she really needs to get back to a hospital," you say. "Can you handle the bodies?"

"Right away, sir."

You leave Leifstel to check up on Kreuss and Stroheim. The team engineer is fine, but Kreuss looks like a mess. Her skin is pale and clammy, her eyes are unfocused and her breathing is shallow. She can only just barely look up when you kneel down next to her.

"I'm sorry… sir." She whispers. "I'll be better, so… so don't send me… don't send me… away…"

"Is she going to be alright?" You ask Stroheim. "I'd like to let her recover here, if there's no emergency."

"She'll be fine," Stroheim says. "Technically, she is fine. The bullet didn't hit anything too important and I was able to take it out without a problem. I think it's just the drugs giving her a hard time."

"Good," you say. "In that case, help me bring her to the lodge."

The two of you gently pick up Kreuss and bring her inside the lodge. You lay her down away from the broken window and the blood splatter. Stroheim starts another round of first aid just in case while you focus on gathering the intelligence.

Predictably, most of it is in code and makes absolutely no sense to you. However, from what you can tell of the maps, there were other Imperial troops along the road and at the mine the major had flag as possible safe houses. The road has a few scribbles on it, while the mine is surrounded by lines and arrows. You hope the team in charge of clearing the mine knows what they're doing.

Leifstel returns after a bit less than an hour. She hands you the equipment she salvaged, along with some personal belongings set aside.

Kreuss' state improves a little. Her delirious mumbling has stopped and her face looks better, but she's still asleep.

"This safehouse has a ragnite stove and heater, so it must have supplies," Stroheim says. "Maybe we can find something good if we look around."

Also here's our potential for reference
>Rules of Engagement: Defense applies against grenades, anti-materiel weapons and chemical weapons.

Pretty bad for a sniper in my opinion, if someone throws a grenade at us or we set off a mine adding our 1 defence to protect our 10 health probably isn't going to make much of a difference. Better than humanitarian is all I'll say.

Hopefully we'll unlock a hidden potential called "This Machine Kills Imperials" that grants a good offensive sniper bonus.

It doesn't look like Kreuss is about to bleed or vomit all over the back seat of your truck, so you decide to head back to base. While your mission isn't really time-sensitive, you'd still like to bring the documents back sooner rather than later.

"Kreuss looks well enough to travel," you say. "Let's just head back."

Stroheim looks mildly disappointed, but she doesn't pursue the matter any further.

"We'll need to take turns carrying Kreuss back to the truck," Leifstel says.

"Stroheim, take all the light equipment," you say. "Leifstel and I will figure out how to carry Kreuss and all the heavy stuff."

It takes the four of you a little over two hours to trek your way across the forest and back to your truck which is, fortunately for you, still there. You put Kreuss in one of the back seats next to Stroheim while Leifstel takes the driver's seat. You take the passenger seat. You're the only one here who's actually good with a gun and you don't want to risk getting caught in another ambush.

Fortunately, your worries were unfounded. Your drive back takes until long into the evening, but you're not attacked. Leifstel drives the truck back to the base and you set your rifle aside to avoid sending the wrong message to the guards.

"One of my soldiers was wounded, but it doesn't look life-threatening for the moment," you say. "Have you heard back from the other teams."

"One of the other teams came back fine, but I don't know where from," one the guards says. "We got some bad news from the south though. Seems like the Empire is really pushing into central Gallia. Heard other rumours that they were starting to push into the north, too."

Looks like the war finally decided to catch up with you.

"All right, thanks," you say. "Leifstel, hospital first."

"Yes, sir."

Leifstel drives you by the field hospital and Stroheim helps the staff with Kreuss. She then takes the truck back to the base's parking lot.

"It's a shame we couldn't have a proper debriefing, sir," she says.

"We can have one in the morning," you say. "Get some rest until then."

"Yes, sir."

That leaves you alone with little to do. It's late, but the night itself is still young. There won't be many soldiers left in town, but the locals might still be in the pub and you need to update the snipers' board. You could also stay with Kreuss until she wakes up. She might need the moral support. Or you could just go to sleep and get ready for tomorrow.

While she was shot full of meds when we talked, we might want to give her some assurances. She got a bad deal, but snipers bullets are on scouts' common encounters table...

A drink after a first mission and chatting up the locals sounds good to me. Expect /tg/ to go for the waifu bait though.

At least at this point in the quest she's unlikely to wake up and give us a love confession.

We can't afford her to be any more emotionally fragile on our next mission so some encouragement would probably be a good idea.

If she hadn't been taken out in one shot and been able to do something I'd be right there with you. She's our weakest link at the moment (it seems) we can take some time to make sure she doesn't breakdown mid combat.

This was just bad luck. We can make that clear when we do our training, instead. If it was because of a bad decision we made or we had a closer relation, I'd be with you.
>>
>>36338935
Sure and we definitely need to take her aside and have a talk before the next time we go out on mission. I don't think the bedside in a hospital after she's just woken up from a life threatening injury is the place to do it though.

Give her a night to rest it off, we'll have time to talk.
>>
We should have got the scout level up last time. We were almost guaranteed to get enough to level officer with this mission.

2= Pub

Kreuss is either on drugs or asleep and you don't particularly feel like waking up in a hospital chair tomorrow. It'd just be embarrassing to everyone involved. Instead, you decide to head to the pub. You need to update the snipers' board and you're starving anyway.

As you suspected, the pub isn't as full as it was the last time you were there, but it's not empty either. The locals and military support staff are eating, dancing and gambling at full swing. You add your three kills to the scoreboard as you pass by. None of the other boards have been updated, so you must be the first sniper back. It's too early to tell, but you don't think Ernestine will be calling you Last Place tomorrow.

You take a seat at the bar and order a beer along with some lamb. You don't know if it's because the recipe is just that good or if it's because it's late and the meat has just been stewing that much longer, but it's the best lamb you've had in a very long time.

Looking around the bar, you spot some familiar faces. The drill sergeant is just leaving the dance floor, while your supply officer, Sergeant Gaul, is playing poker with some younger enlisted men.

>Ask the drill sergeant for some advice. That mission should have gone better.
>Speak with Gaul. Maybe he can get you some better gear?

This is the First Europan War, actual career soldiers from before this were pretty rare in the Gallian army, would be interesting to talk to him.

You walk up to Sergeant Malbridge and call out to him.

"Oh, Lieutenant," he says. "Welcome back. Is there something I can help you with?"

"Yeah, maybe," you say. "Mind if we talk?"

He offers you a seat at his table and you sit down to talk.

"My scout came back from the mission injured," you say. "She should be fine soon, but it shouldn't have turned out like this."

Malbridge leans in closer.

"What happened?"

"I asked her to scout out the woods near the target and she got shot by a sniper," you say. "I thought about taking the sniper's position before I sent her out. I should have known the Imperials had someone there."

"This sort of thing happens," Malbridge says. "There are a lot of stories like this from the previous wars. The cavalry charged an enemy position and got caught in cannon fire from a position anyone trained in artillery could have spotted. Sometimes, soldiers overspecialize and forget the bigger picture. It's an officer's job to keep these things in mind."

"Yeah, you're right," you say. "I'll keep that in mind during our next training session."

"Just start small," the sergeant says. "Teach the scouts about being a sniper, or teach the snipers how to scout. Make sure everyone knows whose limitations they're covering."

>"Thanks. I'll teach Kreuss more about how snipers work."
>"Thanks. I'll ask Kreuss some advice on how scouts work."

I'd rather she has an idea of where shots might be coming at her from. She has that and she should be able to use cover more effectively and spot better.

Damn I forgot the cavalry corps was still a thing in Europa at this point. Wonder if we'll get to witness one of the last mounted charges before the era of the tank.
>>
>>36340062
They're probably actually mounted infantry. They don't charge any more than the Polish did in WW2.
Honestly, the really weird thing is that we are motorized infantry. We're pretty well equipped by WW2 standards.

>Gained 162XP for the Scout Class.

"Thanks," you say. "I'll teach Kreuss more about how snipers work."

"It's all you can do," the sergeant says.

With that, your evening comes to an end. You return to your room to sleep and recover from the effort of accomplishing your mission. Somewhere else in the base, intelligence officers are pouring over the documents you recovered and they'll probably have a brand new mission for you in the morning, but for now, you take a quick shower and slip into warm bed sheets.

It's the sunlight that wakes you up in the morning this time, not the pounding of Jetje's fist on the door. You get dressed and decide to pay a visit to Vanessa at the hospital.

The hospital staff are too busy to may attention to you, not because of a new rush of wounded soldiers, but because they're packing their supplies. It seems your time here will end soon.

Vanessa is resting in a small room at the back of the makeshift hospital.

"'Morning, Vanessa." You greet her casually before she can salute.

"Ah- Good morning, sir- Renard, I mean. Renard." She makes eye contact and looks away almost immediately. "I'm sorry. About the mission, I mean. I should have done better."

"Don't worry about it," you say. "You survived a sniper shot. None of the people I've killed have managed that. That's why I decided we're going to have a training session. Hopefully, we'll still be here for a few hours."

"I overheard some of the hospital staff talking," Vanessa says. "We'll be moving to the border, but it's not for a few more days. We still need to wait for some of the teams to come back."

"In that case, we'll have to make the best use of our time," you say. "I'll wait outside while you're getting dressed. Then we'll meet up with the rest of the team and start planning."

"Yes, sir- Renard."

>>36340207
We're in our own territory, and with how militaristic and patriotic Gallia is, it's probably no difficulty commandeering extra trucks.
>>
>>36340207
Well this is more of a WWI analogue which did see a few cavalry charges before they realised just how futile it had become. As for our motorization I'm not sure how common ragnite vehicles were in EW1 but most brigades are probably fairly well equipped now and standards will go down as the war drags on.

That's it for today's thread and for the prologue. The next thread will be Wednesday. That'll give me some time to plan out the plot moving ahead. We'll probably be going with a weekly schedule after that.
