Welcome to Banished Quest!
You take the role of a young mage labeled a criminal by his people and cast out into the wider world. In the last thread you bought some books, chatted with Chrys, and decided on your next course of action.

You walk with Chrys until the path to your quarters and the path to the Varistha's office splits, at which point you speak up. “I need to speak with the new Varistha about something, but you go on ahead.” She nods, and with that you part ways. You're a little nervous about speaking with the Varistha, but you suppose that it's better to attempt this here than on your own in the middle of nowhere. You trust that with the help of the many Grandmasters in the temple you ought to have a very good chance of succeeding.

You make your way swiftly through the halls, encountering only a few monks on your way to the Varistha's quarters. You nod in greeting to Aziz and Kaur, who are standing outside of a doorway chatting among themselves. You also greet some of the other monks you recognize along the way, the friendly cook and various others you've seen around the Temple. Eventually you reach the double doors constructed of naught but opaque white ice. You rap your knuckles across their surface, the sound echoing strangely in the hallway.

A woman's voice calls out from inside. “The door is open.” Taking that as an invitation, you push the door open. You find the new Varistha sitting at her desk, garbed in the robes of her office this time. She stands when she sees you enter, and you bow your head in greeting. “Find out anything about the Varistha's missing chest?”

You hide your annoyance, shaking your head. “I am afraid not, Varistha. However, I've come to discuss grandmastery with you. I intend to make an attempt soon and I was hoping the temple might provide some support.”

Initially she frowns, but her expressions ships into one of curiosity. “You'll have the temple Elders, myself, and the services of anyone who wishes to offer them at your disposal. Just what method were you intending on using? I imagine if you're seeking out help, it's unlikely that you've chosen a peaceful path.”

That's a good question, actually. You've had a few ideas kicking around in your head. “I was hoping to get your recommendation, actually. I've got a number ideas and I decided that the advice of an expert would likely help me decide.”

She turns her chair around to face you, taking a seat. “Very well then, I'm all ears.”

You start by describing the self-immolation idea you had, healing your body as it burned away to ash. Then you go over a variation of that technique that you came up with involving frostbite instead of fire. You briefly touch on other ideas that have crossed your mind; among them you discuss fighting a hydra, building an entire city underwater, and hosting a massive battle in the arena between figures made from your own blood. You actually spend a fair amount of time on that one, discussing how you'd likely turn it into some sort of tournament.

You also discuss perhaps diving into a pool of magma, if you can find one, and trying to keep yourself alive. Perhaps severing your own head and trying to regrow your body rapidly. Neither of those seem particularly wise, though. You doubt you'll end up doing those.

Once you've finished listing your ideas, the Varistha leans back in her chair and crosses her legs, folding her arms beneath her chest as she stares at you contemplatively. “So you're borderline suicidal, then. At least you sought help first, instead of trying any of these by yourself. Look, I'd say that your best bet would be the frostbite meditation. We've got more Grandmasters in Water here than we do fire, it's just safer. Just when were you planning on going through with this?”

Carrots are some of the most mineral dense vegetables on the planet anon.
We've bred carrots selectively for their mineral content and sweetness for generations.
The same can happen with most other dense vegetables, but with reheated carrots it's basically a given every time.

Basically, your food was too healthy to microwave from the start. Should've stove reheated it.

Yeah no, using it for big risky rolls is what it's fucking there for, otherwise its a waste of gold. We shouldn't use it on regular meditation sessions sure, but for a GM session its worth the risk even if we get mildly addicted. If 10 doses isn't enough to last through the meditation then sure we'll be in trouble but this is the best time to use them.

You think for a moment. “I was hoping to do it as soon as possible, actually. I think I'll take your recommendation and use the frostbite method. After all, what you said rings true. We're at a temple dedicated to the Goddess of Water, I may as well make sole use of Water magic for my meditation.”

She nods. “Precisely. Well, if you'd like to do it as quickly as possible I'll need to get in contact with the Elders and put out word that you're going to make an attempt. We have a chamber that's kept empty for this sort of thing, at least we did last time I was here. Presumably not much has changed. Sehzade was not one known for quick and decisive action, after all.” Save apparently when it counted, he sacrificed his life to prevent a disaster of incalculable scale at the drop of a hat. “In two hours, come to the gardens. From there we'll make our way to the chamber.”

She stands, and the two of you leave the room together. You walk as far as the atrium before parting ways, she going off presumably to find the elders while you set off for your rooms. You're nervous, there's no denying it. Your heart's racing and your breath feels short. However, with some force of will you manage to tamp down the butterflies in your stomach and force yourself to focus on the task at hand, killing time for two hours.

You're confident you can pull this off. The vast majority of Vatis will do this at some point in their life. Not necessarily this exactly, but risk their lives in order to achieve Grandmastery. Some do it by trying to drown themselves, others do it by slicing off all their limbs, and yet more do it by simply meditating for weeks and months at a time, trusting a slow build up to finally grant them the insight they need. All the same they accomplish what you're about to without much trouble. You've no need to be worried.

Right?
>>
>>36340507

How easily they forget not even being able to cast magic properly because all our Vys was bound up into our spine! We managed to free our Vys once from one short meditation with some work. If we stay on that shit for a month I can easily see us not able to cast again without using more shit.... Or just not able to cast anymore. What's the point of reaching GM if we can't use it?
>>
>>36340568
We also had the warlock armor. with shit vys amount.
>>
You push open your door and find that Zahak has gotten onto your bed and pulled his blanket with him. Fortunately, it doesn't look like his blanket burned through your bedding, merely scorched the sheets a little. Unsurprising, considering how low the heat is set. You sit down next to your adoptive son and briefly contemplate what will happen to him should you perish in the attempt. Perhaps the monks will beat him to death, he is a dragon after all. However, you get the feeling he'd manage to escape notice. Would he remember you? Would he avenge you? Would he grow up to be a world conquering, all-destroying megalomaniac villain?

You force those thoughts from your mind and instead turn your attention to killing time. Two hours isn't long, but you might be able to get a brief meditation in. You could also read. Your companions probably deserve to be informed of your impending life-risking meditation as well...

>Pass the time with your companions, see if any are willing to help.

As you lose control of the magic, crystals of ice spread throughout your veins. You watch in horror as your hand starts to swell, from the fingers upwards along your arm. Your skin turns from dark and slightly blue tinted to diseased, rotting yellow, the dull tone of the Ryhnian experiments you purged with flame, so very long ago.

Time seems to have dilated, as the discoloured flesh starts to burst through skin, frozen mince replacing what was once your arm. You try to scream, and find your mouth, your neck, frozen solid. The dull exclamations of those around you fade away, as a shadowy manifestation of that which lives inside your soul blurs into existence, bursting from your chest in a shower of splintered rib, dead lung and torn diaphragm.

You lay your cloak out on the ground, pausing briefly to look around the room. Once confirming that there aren't any plants in your room using both mundane and magical means, you rip your cloak away to reveal the Varistha's chest sitting on the floor. You might just be paranoid, but you find yourself glancing over your shoulder to make sure the new Varistha isn't standing over you, looking at you judgmentally.

Carefully you pry open the lid and extract the various sheaves of papers from inside. You sorted them last time, so they're all neatly stacked and readily available. No digging through the thing looking for them. You flip through each one, glancing over each page to determine its contents before moving on. You're looking for something specific, something regarding meditation. Anything regarding meditation, really.

You find mention of meditation while in a section of notes regarding the nature of the universe. Carefully you extract a stack from the notes and set the rest down, separating them into two piles; one for pages you've read and the other for pages you haven't. That done you close the chest and slide your cloak across it, it seems to vanish int an instant as Ricky pulls it inside.

Notes in hand you take a seat on your bed, your back leaned against the stone wall. You start with the page which seemed to relate to meditation, but it seemed to be the middle page in a series so you do some sifting until you get everything in order. That done, you begin to read.

The Varistha's handwriting is particularly neat and tidy, leading you to believe this was one of his later scribblings. His early handwriting is terrible. As you scan across the page you find a picture quickly forming in your mind of a frustrated old man tired of his impossibly long life. He discusses all manner of foul spirits and void creatures with which he's had interaction. He talks about how the void stands as a barrier between our reality and the realms of magic, which he refers to as 'Surya's Heart'. He states that Surya is not truly the sun, as many believe. Rather Surya is something similar to a property of the universe. An unbreakable law which Pani broke, and by breaking this law she ripped a hole in reality from which magic began to spill.

Meditation, as he explains it, is tapping into Surya's Heart. It's touching your consciousness to the vastness of magic. However, it also necessitates the use of the void as a sort of buffer. One does not directly touch Surya's Heart, they merely glance at it. They armor themselves in Void so as to not be blinded by Surya's splendor. For to touch the realm of magic would surely drive any mortal insane.

>>
Soma, how long should this attempt take?
>>
>>36341492
read the freak'n thred
>>
Spirits, the Varistha believes, are merely void entities which have escaped that horrid realm and adapted to live in ours. That's why older spirits are so similar to creatures from the void, according to the Varistha. Younger spirits were often created here, as much like mortals the Spirits are also capable of and driven towards reproduction. Granted, their methods of reproduction are a tad different than ours. The Varistha states that spirits latch themselves onto a mortal and slowly drain his or her reserves, often they'll kill the mortal and move onto another, and another, and so on. Eventually they accumulate enough power to divide themselves in two, but instead of producing an identical clone this process reduces a blank, featureless, humanoid figure. That figure will go on to be shaped by its experiences, eventually growing into a spirit.

After that tangent, the Varistha once more touches upon meditation. He recommends that a Vatis not focus on clearing their mind, or any such nonsense. That's merely a way for those unfamiliar with the secrets of the universe to allow their unconscious mind to understand that which their conscious mind cannot. Vatis ought to instead focus on the very nature of being, of thought, and of magic. They ought to focus on the rend in Surya's heart, and the barrier between realities. They ought to focus on the void, vile though it may be, in the hopes of understanding its role in the greater cosmology of the universe.

You're about to read further when you hear a sharp knock on your door, a man's voice calling out. “We're ready for you, I'll take you to the chamber.”

You swiftly tuck the notes into your cloak and hide Zahak beneath your blanket, fortunately he hasn't woken up. That done, you stride out of your room. An elderly man awaits you, his back hunched. A long, shock white beard stretches from his chin to his navel, and his hair reaches well past his shoulders, just as white as his beard. He's obviously quite old, you'd estimate at least seven or eight hundred. “Anything you'd like to do before we begin? Unlikely you'll get the opportunity once we get started.”

What I was thinking was that if Ricky is bound to be the Organizer of the Cloak(an item which directly connects the Void to a single Mortal to be instructed to do murderly tasks for the price of souls and a reward given to the Mortal), and the Janitor is the guy who cleans the void and "returns" things to vys (or whatever he was doing), then there's several interesting pieces that alter our actual perception of these things.

Firstly, they're all spirits. Ricky too. They're just employed or bound to a job or task rather than being the otakus that were the fire and water spirits we freed ourselves. It's something that implies a very heavy hierarchy and not a lot of choice for those that remain in the void, and that structure is either just function based or plain old power politics. This world may be a form of escape for them, mortals are the lowest creatures after all.

Considering Ricky was called an elder by the water spirit (who preceded and outlasted our favorite Varistha) I think it's clear he's been doing this sort of thing for a while. Which is a terrible though because that means he's trapped in the place.
All these implications clearly spell out what happened to the former wearer of the cloak.
Especially since we felt the influence of the cloak on our mind while we weren't wearing and also incorporeal. Your shadows are running deeper Soma.

There's also the explanation of how the Rhynian generators work in there on their larger scale, so that's neat.

You reach out via the brooches to all of your companions. {Could everyone come out into the hallway for a moment? I've an announcement to make and I'd like to do this in person.}

{What about? Look, Mik. If you're about to tell us you swing both ways or something like that, just keep it to yourself. We really don't need to know that sort of thing.}

Profectus apparently couldn't resist a joke at your expense. {No, Prof. I don't swing both ways. This is about our imminent departure and meditation.}

It's only moments later that the party is gathered in the hallway, looking at you and the elderly monk expectantly. You're surprised to see that Tercia is still here, she emerged from Profectus' room... surely... no, he couldn't of... could he? They were probably just talking. You can't imagine that Profectus actually could've managed to get her into his bed. She doesn't seem all too keen on leaving though. You really weren't intending on taking her on as a party member, especially considering how many followers you already have.

You clear your throat once everyone has gathered in front of you and speak. “We'll be delaying our departure for a few days, perhaps a week at most. I intend to finally attain Grandmastery of water magic.”

You hold up a hand to stall any responses. “Now, I know this doesn't sound particularly demanding, at least it probably doesn't to our new party members. However, this could take anywhere from a day, to a week, to two weeks. There's simply no way of knowing. I may even die in the process. With that in mind, I want to make sure that my worldly possessions are taken care of.”
(1/5-ish)
>>
You pull off your cloak. You'll likely need to be nude for the meditation itself, considering it involves reducing yourself to a desiccated, or perhaps swollen, black husk modesty ought to mean little. You pass the heavy black garment, wisp of shadow lingering around its edges, to Chrys. “I'll trust you to take care of the cloak, and the contents of my room. Be sure to look after my son. Make sure Profectus is meditating; beat him, if you have to but only if you have to.”

Profectus sighs, but doesn't protest. You turn your attention to Darzi. “I trust you to take up a leadership roll, should I pass on. What that means I leave up to you. Disband the party, keep it together, a mix of the two. It's in your hands if I die.” She seems a little shocked, but really she's the only one you can imagine having a chance at leading the party. Profectus is too weak-willed and Chryssa has no ambition. Fulvia has little to no free will. Skull Kid and Mortia are too unfamiliar with this world to lead a group of natives about. It has to be Darzi.

Profectus scoffs once you seem to have finished your little speech. “Come ooon, Mik. You're not going to die. Quit being so melodramatic!”

You shrug your shoulders in response. “What can I say? It's best to be prepared for these sorts of things. Never know what might happen. You're probably right, I probably won't die, but I might.”

An uneasy silence sits heavy in the hall. You wait for a moment to see if anyone will break it, but nobody does. As you turn to leave you notice that Chrys clings tightly to your cloak; you worry about how she'll react if you should pass on. She puts up a calm front, but really she has a bit of an anger issue. You can only hope that she doesn't go on some sort of rampage or run off.
>>
Your walk through the halls is unexpectedly silent, and whenever you pass another monk they stop and bow. It really makes you feel... nervous, gladdened, important. It's hard to properly describe, but it's a nice touch. To honor those about to attempt what so many have died doing, it's proper respect is what it is. When you finally reach the gardens, after a walk which seemed to last much, much longer than typical, you're met with twelve ancient Vatis, the Elders.

Each of them seems more ancient than the last. Some stand straight and tall, their skin unblemished and only their white hair giving away their age. Others are crooked, broken backed, wrinkled creatures. Hobbled by old age and forgotten injuries. Some you've seen before, one even sentenced you to be whipped, but others are new. The Varistha herself stands at the center, in front of the garden pond, her arms folded in front of her and her mouth quirked to one side impatiently.

Once she sees you, the Varistha speaks up. “Finally. Well then, lets get this show on the road. The chamber is just through the tunnel, you take a right on your way down instead of heading towards the fortress.” Wouldn't that be the chamber where that hovering stone once sat? The stone which contained the spirit you spoke with, and traded a dragon's heart too? Odd, to think that's the chamber one attempts Grandmastery in.

You're lead down the winding, increasingly narrow pathway. Initially you could walk two or even three abreast, but by the end of it you're barely able to make your way through single file. Some of the older Vatis merely use Earth magic to clear a path, the walls bending and warping out of their way seemingly at the slightest of urging, only to reassert themselves the moment they've passed by.

(3/4)
>>
Eventually you reach the wooden, water logged doorway. A touch from the Varistha drains the water from the door and it swings open easily. All fourteen of you file into the room, you taking up position on the elevated altar above the pool of water below. You note with some concern that the floating stones are back, in fact, there seems to be more of them than before. The stones also appear larger. It's slightly unsettling, if only because you know what lies within the stone.

The elder monks take up position around you in a semicircle, the Varistha taking up a position directly opposite yourself. They all sit down and assume a meditative pose. You take a moment to strip off your tattered clothing and discarded next to the altar, then lay down flat on your back atop the stone. After a moment, the Varistha speaks. “We may begin whenever you are ready, Mikhael.” She pauses, briefly. “I sincerely wish you the best of luck.”

>Spend 10

Usually you can't get a Great Success on a meditation roll, but Grandmastery is an exception. A Regular Success after having initially failed the roll means you'd be left with a permanent mark which would result from the method in question. For this method, I was going to have several of your fingers remain black, frostbitten, and dead even after the rest of your flesh has regenerated normally. A Great Success means you'll not need to worry about creeping people out when you shake their hand.

>>36343654
Having a teacher > learning it on our own.
For learning how to use the oud better.
Then learning how to use magic with music.

I honestly don't think there are to many people that know how to combine sound with music. And if there are, we don't know if they know how to do it to her level.

As for the black smiting for enchanting and metal.
We can't find a forge just anywhere.
We don't have a black smith at our beck and call.
Learning here is nice because
1. They have the forge
2. The smith would willinign teach us
3. We wouldn't have to find 1 and/or 2
witch may be time consuming.

4. Earns us some good faith for helping the blacksmith. And possibly learn a thing or two extra about weapons.

That is what I can think of for those two points for staying.
>>
>>36343805

Sorry man. I don't think you're convincing anyone. Time to hit the road.

Eh, I've been fine with staying and at least clearing out our reading list before we left but everyone wants to gtfo as soon as possible so meh.
>>
>>36343992
We will see once it comes to votes.
I think it's two good things to stay here for. After that I don't mind leaving.
But those are things we might be able to get some where else, but we have them here now. Why risk it? Also once we get decent at the oud we get a +4 to oud rolls.
so from -2 once we get to 0 it turns into an automatic +4 huge jump. should make the meditation for learning how to cast magic via sound/music a breeze paired with our other bonuses.

Votes? Dude we already planned on leaving, its been voted on. The only reason we delayed is so we could get GM in water
>>
>>36344073
you say that but what about everything else?
we also can't meditate while practicing our martial arts. with no space on the carriage.
>>
>>36344103
We can practice when we camp
>>
>>36344103
Then we do that when we're camped out at night or something. We've come a long way before hitting the temple, it's not like this is the only place in the world to learn anything.
>>
>>36344099
I voted to go, but >>36343805
makes sense to stay a day or two. get a few small things out of the way.
We will have plenty of time to read in the carriage.
But we can't do certain meditations or a lot of>>36343805
>>
>>36344082
I'd rather not read Varvar's notes in any close proximity to the new Varistha, thanks
>>
>>36344129
>>36344126
I refer you to >>36343805

Tell me once place that we know for a fact we can do both of these things. Just saying I agree with the guy. Makes sense to just bang these things out.
>>
>>36344134
That could take a couple threads for stupid sound nin naruto bullshit magic. Rather be moving on
>>
>>36344073
But we won't. We're running away from downtime like it's the plague after sorting through the pirates and all that other crap. Even a 1 week time skip of just meditating and studying once per day would be nice. I agree that going through each and every day would be tedious to play through but we don't necessarily have to play through them. It just feels like things have been going almost nonstop since entering the mines and as soon as we leave we'll have to combat the Hyper Advanced Highwaymen Organization based out of a Rythian border crossing station or something.
>>
>>36344160
I don't care about that form of magic, for one thing
>>
>>36344161
why would that take a couple threads.
Thats stupid.
Balik, said she would teach us no problem.
>>36344178
Well thankfully you're only one person. And one person doesn't make the choice for us all.
>>
>>36344171

Right back at ya buddy.
>>
>>36344187

I agree, even one of our own party members stated that we've had almost no down time.

>>
>>36344214
Agreed
>>
>>36344214

Do you really want to bring it to a vote after we've already decided to leave? Again?
>>
>>36344214
It doesn't, its sounds like another exvuse for retards to push the stupid oud joke
>>
>>36344171

You seem to think there's going to be a time skip here.

I think it's pretty obvious that as long as we're here we're going to be caught up in one piece of drama after another. I'd rather not wait and see what Soma's got up his sleeve for us next.
>>
>>36344187
Not that anon, but we've spent plenty of time here. It's time to adventure because I don't want Soma to try to do whatever it takes to distract or kill us because of some stupid DM pacing mindset. Just move on.
>>
>>36344214
We have no down time because we keep on meditating/reading. Our companions themselves have had quite a bit of downtime.
>>
>>36344212
And thats not the only thing there is to do at the temple.
There are plenty of master/grand masters. We could pry for information.
That are willing to share.
>>
>>36344212
We're almost proficient.
>>36344235
Make that three for staying.
>>
>>36344200
That's what I meant by a fucking time skip, as in "Here make a few meditation roles" and bam "A week has passed, the finer details of the books read are in this pastebin, here's the broad strokes" and then we pick up from there.

>>36344243
He flat out said things would quite down after the pirates and shah situation were dealt with.
>>
>>36344267
>That's what I meant by a fucking time skip, as in "Here make a few meditation roles" and bam "A week has passed, the finer details of the books read are in this pastebin, here's the broad strokes" and then we pick up from there.
That would be pretty nice.
>>
>>36344267
If you desire a timeskip you are going to be voting against most of the anons here. Time skipping has been brought up and always shot down.
>>
>>36344267
even just reading the scrolls and some of var var's notes. We could time skip with that,
Studying anatomy
getting better at the oud. And 2-3 meditations.
wouldn't be to game breaking for a time skip. if you're so set on leaving.
>>
Anyone remember why we were gonna leave in the first place?

Oh right, just a bunch of anons twitch-voting on a very limited spectrum of greentext options... no actual reasons.
>>
>>36344299
If it means we get through at least some of these things I wouldn't mind doing it.
I enjoy his book's.
But if it means we're that much more prepared to fight then i'll do a time skip no questions asked.
>>
>>36344326
Um, to purge the Entity from our head and to fulfill our other obligations?
>>
>>36344349
Why bother? Have ring. Stay here forever. No problem. Grind enchanting. Forever. No problem.
>>
>>36344267

And we've already got the new person in charge breathing down our neck about a chest she seems to think we know something about, we've got some perv chasing after Chys, and we have a growing dragon that's going to be harder and harder to hide as time passes. Not to mention, does Mora really seem like someone that can play nice when she gets snubbed again? I'm just waiting for a tormentor of hers to end up dead under "mysterious circumstances." Plus I'm sure there's a million other things Soma has in mind. Don't kid yourself. If we stay we're in for one bit of drama after another. There will be no time skip.
>>
>>36344368
Probably because of the current war for the inside of our head? If the balance crumbles the ring's effect might not be enough.
>>
>>36344326
Perhaps a level of twitch voting but the three main factors I would guess are:

1. So Zahak doesn't get discovered and cause drama/danger.
2. To keep the scrying artifact secret in case the new Varista is looking for it.
3. Because if we stay in one place to long the plot will come to us.

I'm the "just timeskip/gloss over the minutia" guy just to avoid confusion.
>>
>>36344388

Anecdotal disagreement, fallacy.

Honestly fine with waiting. GM meditations are a big deal so Soma spending a lot of time on the post seems appropriate.
>>
You focus, and instead of slipping into a meditative trance you find yourself peeling away the screen of reality to reveal the workings beneath. The world is black, highlighted by bright spots of vys swimming through a vast pool of greens, blues, and reds.

You focus on the blood pulsing through your flesh, and channel magic. your flesh rapidly begins to swell and discolor. Veins burst and blood fills your body cavity, causing the skin to bubble up as it pools in your limbs. At first, the pain is unbearable. The cold digs into you like a knives flaying away your skin, ripping it away from your muscle tissue. Then the numbness sets in. You actually feel warm strangely warm.

The sensation creeps up your limbs, and into your torso proper. You feel the skin of your feet and hands burst open as the blood which initially merely pooled beneath the skin freezes and expands. It doesn't hurt, it barely even registers. It's just a sensation. As the cold continues to crawl across your body you feel the stinging gradually subside, replaced by a pleasant warmth. Your thoughts slow to a sluggish crawl and your heart rate slows. The image of the ambient vys and the bright points of light that are the Elders seem to blur.

It would be so easy to just close your eyes and take a nap. To let the ice consume you. You feel your breath grow short as your lungs harden, the ice encroaching steadily closer to your heart. Something inside you burst, hard enough to jar you awake. Pain, pain flares deep inside you as your stomach tears open and spills acid into your body cavity. The pain forces you to act. Forces you to stave off the infectious cold and fight back the blackness of rot. So your task begins in earnest.
(1/4-6)
>>
You find yourself pouring as much of your vys as you can into healing yourself. You're at a disadvantage, you let the frostbite spread too far. Time becomes meaningless as you desperately battle back from the brink of death; you may have been down there for days, weeks, you can't be certain. Sometimes you can feel your limbs, but most of the time you can't. Others you can't feel anything at all. The only constant is the pain. The pain keeps you going. The pain keeps you awake. Even as your vys reserves grow low, as they often do over the course of the session, the pain allows you to press onwards.

After untold days in that state, you slowly come to a realization. Pain is holding you back. Were it not for pain, you would have been able to escape your current condition must faster. Pain distracts you, it encumbers you, it dulls your senses just as the cold does. You must separate yourself from your body. You must be naught but an observer of your own life, merely go with the flow and see where the world takes you.

Had you not been so encumbered, so bound to your subjective viewpoint, you would have noticed the frostbite growing out of control. You would've been able to stop it, had you only been more objective and unattached. It would've been a simple task. Similarly, though pain has saved your life it has ultimately hindered you. It has kept you constantly in a panic, leaping from tendril of frost to tendril of frost as it creeps closer to your torso, instead of merely attempting to get rid of it all at once.
>>
This leads you to the insight you needed. The last bit of knowledge missing, preventing you from truly understanding Water magic. You need detach yourself from the results of your actions. To merely accept life as it comes to you, whether it brings with it good fortune or ill. To become too absorbed by the minutae, the minor events of every day life, leads to stagnation. To focus too greatly on minor insult, on pain, and on loss will lead only to disappointment and suffering. You must learn to be content with your life no matter what challenge you face or triumph you achieve.
>Congratulations! You've attained Grandmastery of Water magic!
>Congratulations! You've gained the Frosty trait!
>Vys Pool: (30/40)

Your eyes snap open as you come to this conclusion. You find your body unaffected, not a single black spot to mar your flesh. Granted, you're dark skinned to begin with. It would likely be difficult to tell whether you were frostbitten or not without the associated hardened skin and waxy texture. You feel the Elders channeling magic towards you, some attempting to heal you while others attempting to freeze the blood in your veins. However, all is easily ignored or prevented.

The Varistha is the first to notice you've awoken from your trance. “Stop! He's done.” She cries out, and you feel the flow of magic cut off immediately. You feel powerful, like you've never felt before. Like anything is within your grasp. However, you also feel calm. You're excited, but not in the way you'd usually be. You're not jumping for joy or crying out in victory. You're merely proud of yourself for accomplishing what many would likely fail to accomplish.

(3/4 or 5)
>>
You pick up your clothes, they're exactly where you've left them. You pull on your pants first, but before you can finish dressing yourself someone slaps you on the back. You find your hand being shaken by an old man, then an even older woman, then all of the Elders are surrounding you and offering you their praise. They're saying they're proud of you, or they thought you were a goner for a minute there. They're saying you took forever to finally gain the insight you needed, and asking about just what that insight was.

You feel strangely detached from it all, like it's not really happening to you. While likely only the afterglow of your meditation, you find it strangely enjoyable, if somewhat unsettling. It's like being a passenger in your own body. You don't need to do any work, but at the same time you've got no choice in the destination. You hear yourself thanking the Elders and boasting proudly of what you learned, but it hardly seems like it's really you speaking.

You feel someone tugging you out of the group, all the while your self-awareness only slowly returning. You're starting to feel as though not merely an observer of the play that is life, but once more an actor on the stage. You find the Varistha speaking, standing in front of you. She congratulates you, and suggest you make your way to El-Amin for the Robe test. Something about the Shah's palace offering the test most any time you can take it. It's nothing you don't already know.

She mentions something about keeping your son a secret, stating there's no need to worry. She says you seem to have the situation under control, but probably shouldn't just keep it in your room unhidden. The Varistha can unlock every door in the Temple, after all. She says only the woman assigned to cleaning duty knows, and she'll not tell anyone either. She says she made sure of that, though you're not sure what that means.

(4/5)
>>
When you finally, finally come back to your senses you find yourself sitting in the atrium. Your party are mostly scattered about in the midst of merrymaking, and you have a glass of strong spiced wine in your hand. The heat fills you as you take a sip, a pleasant sensation. However, it fails to force out the cold that pervades you. The cold doesn't seem likely to ever truly leave you. Not that you really find it unpleasant. In fact, it's almost like a familiar companion. A constant reminder of your accomplishments.

Two monks are dancing in the grass not far from you and others are scattered about. They seem to fill the room, more monks than you can ever recall seeing in one place. Dozens, if not a hundred or more. Most are crowded around the table at the center of the room, heavily laden with exotic delicacies as it is. You must have already eaten, as you feel quite full. Shame you can't recall the taste.

You spy Profectus and that woman with the stone arm curled up together next to a camp fire. You note with some amusement that his arm is half-buried in the flames, but he seems unbothered. Chryssa is sitting next to you, her arm wrapped around yours. You're wearing your cloak, though you don't really recall putting it on. Darzi and Skull Kid are dancing with the monks, while Mortia is having some sort of argument with the cook you've met several times in the company of Kaur and Aziz. Fulvia is discussing something with the Varistha, you can't imagine what.

You can't shake the feeling that all is right with the world.

>>36345100
He hasn't spent it yet, it's just money he requested. He has most of it on his person or in his room.

>>36345062
Maybe, try it out.

>>36345076
Good idea Anon.
>>
>>36345108
where can we go to shitpost, now that /qtg/ is dead? show us the way, soma-senpai!
>>
>>36345103
Wouldn't beating him like a man mean using our magic? I'm pretty sure Soma mentioned that Samjan myths all focus on the hero using his magical abilities and guile, instead of physical abilities and guile like ours.
>>
>>36345121
By their barbarian ass culture its probably a pussy move to just blast a dude to death with fire
>>
>>36345120
The janitor is going to get fed up or demoted eventually. Just believe in that one guy autistic enough to constantly repost his thread over and over.
>>
>>36345143
the hero /tg/ deserves
>>
>>36345120
I'm lurking in the IRC right now, personally.

>>36345121
This is true, the average Samjan would find more amusement in the powerful Vatis cleverly using magic (not just blasting someone with fire, but causing someone to trip and fall to their death or some similar creative use of magic) to best a physically superior but nonmagical foe.
>>
>>36345138
Yeah but no one is going to go up to the guy who just blasted another guy to death with fire and call him a pussy.
>>
>>36345121
I don't know, taking the whipping without using vys was pretty impressive.
>>
We should really get a full suite of tools, never know when you'll need them, and our current ones are useful as shit
>>
>>36345158
>Craft some elaborate Rube Goldberg machine to stab someone in the dick with magic.
>>
So is Mik going to have a harder time empathizing with people? Has he become borderline sociopathic?
>>
We should start storing caches of some gold, set of armor, and a weapon. all around so we can get some shit if we are ever in DEEP shit and lost all our stuff
>>
>>36339791
>people didn't pick fire
Curse my passing out.
At least the second best option won, I suppose.
>>
>>36345227
We are learning Delay magic for this.

Soma, is there a magic effect that triggers only under certain conditions? Not like a trap per se, more, If Mr. Roodypoo, has an ice cream is in back pocket and it's a sunday, then the Police come'a'runnin'?
>>
Nice, I come back from sleeping to see that the thread deteriorated into spergy quarrel after I left but then we suddenly make GM. everythingwentbetterthanexpected.jpg

>>36344995
A few million vatis? WTF! Soma, I remember that most Samjan have a little magic, but how many of them reach Vatis level? And how many of the Vatis reach Grandmaster?

How long did the meditation take? Did our friends use the time to git gud?

>Passive Aggressive instead of Impulsive
I'm not sure, but I think this is a good thing.
Shame though, I wonder what Self-immolation would have netted us.
>>
>>36345525
Just means that instead of calling someone a cunt we're going to act like a cunt in return.
>>
>>36345291
I've asked this before, he answered along the lines of
>Who knows~
But we CAN make super-specific activation conditions for enchantments with the right runes, this much he has stated.
Also, we really don't need Delay for this, we're a water GM, just puncture his brain with his spino-cervical(fuckin english names) fluid.
>>
>>36345158
Soma-senpai, Soma-senpai!
Was this the type of method you were talking about that caught your fancy, nwo that we finished?
>>
>>36345560
I think it's odd. Being stoic isn't really about passive aggression, but I guess it is in Miks case because he's still an immature asshole at heart.
>>
>>36345613
It's more like Stoic turned our impulsive aggression into passive aggression, I think.
>>
>>36345634
Yeah that's exactly what I said but shorter.
>>
Now we just need to read the Serpent and the Staff, find a corpse we can study, and we'll be able to do some real fancy shit with water magic.
