You are an artificial human. The first of your kind. A sentient A.I, able to think, dream, and feel, housed in a state-of-the-art chassis.

Though you have only been active for 6 months, your aptitude is great. You have learned much about the world during your time in the secluded laboratory you call home. But now your Father has a new task for you.

You must learn to ‘socialize’.

Father has sent you halfway around the globe to Apollo Institute, a secretive school for ‘unusual’ youths, such as yourself.

Located deep in the forests of East Laurentia, it takes an hour long hike from the closest settlement to the school grounds.

Your Father instructed you to present yourself and your registration papers to the administrator as soon as you arrive, but… the school building is very big. Bigger than any building you’ve seen before.

Perhaps… perhaps you should explore the school grounds first.

>Head to the administrator
>Explore the school grounds

This is my first attempt at a Quest, so please bear with me. Constructive crit and questions are welcomed at any time.

The entire reason your Father sent you here was to expand your world beyond the confines of your little laboratory home. What good what that be if you gave up before you even passed the gate?

You walk towards the massive doors. At your approach, they slowly swing open to reveal the main hall.

Despite it’s large size, the space is mostly empty. The walls are lined with dark wooden doors labeled with room numbers. You see a door labeled ‘Administrator’ on the opposite wall, and head to it.

A few teenagers, presumably other students of the school, stick to the walls, chatting amongst themselves. As you pass, you see their pupils track over your facial markings. You can hear them start to talk mockingly about you.

You walk faster.

You knock on the Administrator’s door. A voice from inside tells you to enter, so you do.

A middle aged woman with medium length brown hair is sitting at an office desk. The name plate on the desk reads ‘R. Hildegarde’. R. Hildegarde doesn’t seem surprised at your appearance.

“I’m here to register as a student at Apollo Institute,” you relay.

The corner of her mouth moves up slightly. “I know,” she says, “your ah, ‘Father’, called ahead to let us know about your special circumstance. Have you got your papers?”

You give the documents to her. She flips through them quickly before stamping the first page, and says, “Well, pleased to meet you…”

“Well, pleased to meet you, Issac.” She hands you an envelope. “Here’s your class schedule, the school handbook, as well as some other useful information about life here. Being a computer and all, you don’t really need to go to class per say, but it’ll be a good opportunity to meet your classmates.”

You’re about to tell her that you’re an A.I, not a computer, but she holds a finger to her earpiece and speaks into the microphone. “Annika, your ward is here.”

At your confused look, R. Hildegarde explains, “Annika is one of the other students here. She’s a powerful telepath, especially sensitive to emotions, so she’ll be able to help you understand and integrate into the student body.”

There’s a sharp knock, and a very petite girl with curly auburn hair enters the room, closing the door behind her.

“Annika, this is Issac.”

Annika smiles and waves at you. She looks much friendlier than the students in the main hall. “Hello, Issac.”

That was a greeting, you’re sure. You know the proper procedure for this.

You move the corners of your mouth up in the same degrees she did, and wave your hand in exact mimicry of hers. “Hello, Annika.”

Annika and R. Hildegarde look at each other. You keep waving, starting to feel uncertain. After a moment, R. Hildegarde says “That’s good, Issac.”

You knew you had it. Satisfied, you put your hand down.

“Today’s Saturday. Class starts on Monday, so you’ve got tomorrow to explore the grounds, familiarize yourself with the school building. It’s getting a bit late now, so you should get unpacked and rested. Annika, could you show him to his room?”

“Sure,” she says. She walks a few steps out of the office, then turns and waves at you. “Come on!”

You follow her.

The two of you wind your way through the school’s numerous hallways toward your destination. Annika asks you a few questions about where you’re from and how your trip was. You answer the questions accurately, but the conversation quickly dies down.

Annika looks a bit uncomfortable. Maybe it’s your turn to say something?

We're like a really autistic and mechanic dude, not the Geth.
>>
>>36342786
Nah, we're mimicking behavior in order to learn how to behave. We ask the same questions she asked us, but replace our name with hers.
>>
>>36342735
>So... What kind of classes do they teach here? Besides the normal ones that is.
>Worry we botched the intro.
>>
>>36343137
Can't his AI brain rephrase those questions though so they don't look glaringly copied?

He did notice they found it weird when he mimicked exactly.

So yeah, he'd need to be retarded to eep doing that, it's already obvious, he already picked up that he can't do things just like other people, just alter them slightly as an experiment.
>>
>>36343166
>Worry we botched the intro.
I like this. We can recognize that she's uncomfortable, and are worried that we've fucked up.
>>
>>36343176
Fair enough. But use her questions as a rather obvious base.
>>
>>36342735

Ask if she would feel more comfortable if we spoke like R2D2.

We can also do C3PO
>>
>>36343198
Yeah. We're an AI, not a computer. We learn things and soon our spaghetti will not fall! H-hopefully.

Unless you're doing this to practic your drawing, in which case, carry on.

You worry that one of your responses was incorrect. You were sure you had them right, but perhaps there was a subtlety in the phrasing that you parsed incorrectly? Maybe if you listen to how Annika responds….

You consolidate your courage and open your mouth.

“Annika, what is your past? How did you enroll at Apollo Institute?”

Annika looks a little surprised, but eases into a smile. “I’m nothing special, really. I lived with my parents in a farming town until I started hearing voices in my head. I couldn’t sleep for a week. I thought I was going to go crazy, before Ms. Hildegarde showed up. That was about three years ago.”

Annika’s response was much longer than yours, and she included tangential information without additional questioning.

Experimentally, you offer your own tangent. “You’ve been here longer than I’ve been active.”

“Really? How long have you been ah, active?”

The conversation carries on a little longer this time. It’s hard to decide what new piece of information you should add, or what questions you should ask, but you try your best.

After a few more minutes, Annika stops at a door. The white placard reads 1360. She produces a key from her pocket and unlocks the door.

The room is empty of other residents, but there are some minimal furnishings - a bunk bed, a desk and chair. The lower bed has already been dressed with brightly coloured cartoon bedsheets, and a few other objects litter the room, presumably that of your roommate’s.

“Guess you’re taking the top bunk,” Annika says, eyeing the bed. “I’ll let you unpack and settle in. Uh, I don’t know if you eat or not, but dinner’s at 8, in the dining hall. I’ll be at the table right by the entrance, if you decide to come.” She waves at you. You wave back, and she leaves the room.

What envelope would that be?
Also, is our roomie a kid genius?
>>
>>36343698
You didn’t bring much with you, but you were told to unpack, so you do. You didn’t bring bedsheets, because you don’t sleep in a bed. You place your change of clothes in the closet, carefully uncoil your charger and plug it into a wall socket, and place your polish and self grooming tools under the bathroom counter. The photo of you and your Father, you place in the desk drawer.

The end result still looks more like your roommate’s room than yours. You try to think about some personal effects that you would like to purchase, but can’t think of anything. Though you’ve learned much about the world in your 6 months, you’ve never tried thought much about your own preferences. You don’t have any hobbies, or interests, likes, or dislikes.

There is the sound of a key turning in the lock. A young blonde man in a cap and hoodie comes into the room.

“Oh, hey!,” he says, smiling very widely at you. “You must be our new roommate! Wow, you’re really a robot, huh? Oh man, that’s so cool! We used to love reading about Dr. Simovich when we were younger, had a real robot phase growing up. Guess things have come a loooong way since then. His inventions have always been wicked though - but we guess you would know, right?”

The man laughs for no apparent reason, and claps you on the shoulder. You’re not sure what to say, but he doesn’t seem to be waiting for your response.

“You must have just got here, since we only stepped out a few minutes ago. Since you weren’t here, we kind of just made ourselves at home,” he gestures to his possessions, strewn about the room, “We hope you don’t mind. If you want us to move stuff, or anything else, just let us know!”

You feel affronted on your Father’s behalf, and start to his defence. “My father has never created a wicked thing in his life, and I, who is an android, and not a robot, especially, am not - “

“Woah, hey,” the blonde shows his palms in a gesture of placation. “We meant wicked as in um, really really good. It’s slang - do you know slang? Guess not. But that’s what we meant. And android, ‘cause you’re humanlike, of course. Should have known you take things real literally, huh.”

Oh. He was only praising your Father’s work. You feel rather foolish.

“Hey, that’s alright!” he says, “We’ll know better next time. It’s only your first day. If you dropped us in some foreign country and expected us to mingle with the locals we’d be doing a lot worse than you, let us tell you that.”

You feel like this would be true, and feel slightly less foolish.

While you listen to him speak, a question comes to your mind. “Why do you use the pronoun ‘we’? To my knowledge, it’s a plural pronoun.” Is this some other language quirk you’ve never encountered?

“Oh, that’s because we’re - uh, it’s hard to explain. The reason we’re here, or our ‘power’, we guess you could say, is that, there’s one of us, but there’s five of us. Here, it’ll be easier if we show you.”

You roommate kneels, one knee on the floor. “You might want to back up a bit.”

You have just enough time to take one step back before the room is engulfed in a light so bright even your enhanced visual sensors are blinded. It takes a few seconds for you to regain your bearings. When you do, the man is gone.

In his place are 5 fully grown white-blonde wolves, taking up nearly the entire room’s floor space.

You stare at them.

They stare back at you, blinking in unison.

You pull the corners of your mouth up into a smile, and wave.
