Another long day of walking through the forest winds down as you, Cecilia, and Vi set up camp for the night. A previously unseen moon looms in the sky, it lights the forest in a pale purple light. You stare at the colossal figure in the sky, not questioning where it came from anymore, but for now wondering which direction it rises from and which direction it sets.

You reason that a magically created world would have no need for a magnetic north or south, so directions can be arbitrarily assigned or not assigned at all. A directionless world seems to suit what bizarre things you’ve seen thus far, you shake your head for even trying to apply reason to this place.

“No fire tonight.” Vi says simply.
“Why is that?” You ask, turning away from the moon overhead.
“That…” Vi points skyward. “That is a lantern.”

You and Cecilia take another look at the celestial body.

You shake your head once again in disapproval. “Rather excessive even for her, don’t you think?”
“It doesn’t matter what I think, I just don’t feel like dying tonight. No fire.” Vi replies sternly.
“Fair enough.” You shrug and settle on the ground.

It’s not as if you need it this night, the temperature is actually warmer than it has been most nights since you’ve arrived in this world. In fact, in just a few minutes, both Vi and Cecilia have dozed off to sleep quite, looking quite comfortable.

You smile to yourself, the journey to the warden shouldn’t take much more than another days walk. You close your eyes to head off to sleep.
Singing?
Your eyes open, a voice carries through the forest so clearly that you thought you were dreaming it at first. The clarity of the voice allows you appreciate it fully. It’s a woman’s voice, it sounds, almost sad, lamenting. But it’s so pleasant to listen to, it fills you with a strange reassuring warmth that makes you forget about just about everything for the moment. It sounds not too far away and you’re tempted to wake the others so that they can listen to it too.
Part of you just wants to run over to the voice by yourself.

>Stay where you are to listen and go to sleep.

>Wake the others to listen.

You run over to where the others and hastily wake the two of them. Vi rouses quickly, but Cecilia refuses to have her sleep interrupted.

“What are you doing, you idi-.“ Vi stops midsentence to listen to the song carrying through the woods.

For a few moments, no emotions are clear on her face illuminated by the pale moonlight, and then suddenly a look of alarm comes through.

“We need to go, now!” Vi says in an angry whisper.
“But…” You look down at Cecilia, still sleeping peacefully. Her mouth is affixed into a slight smile, perhaps due to the singing.
“Carry her!” Vi hisses as she flies from the area.

The singing has stopped.

You gently scoop Cecilia into your arms and head off, you turn back once to see an ethereal light far off into the distance. The trees quiver in its presence, as if anxious to move closer, or flee from it. Inside you the same conflict arises. A yearning to get closer clashes with a desire to take off, these mixed emotions causes you frustration.

You run away.

A heavy morning rain comes down as your group marches through a narrow passage way of moss covered rocks.

“We should take shelter.” Vi announces clutches the collar of your shirt, taking shelter from the torrent under your chin.

Cecilia twirls in the rain ahead of you, using your cloak to keep her head dry. She’s more energetic than the two of you, owing to an interrupted sleep. She slips and lands on her butt, but quickly gets up and resumes her twirling no worse for the wear.

You see a rock over hang leading to a cave.

“Over there.” You shout and point.

The three of you make your way quickly to the refuge from the rain.

For the most part, it’s only you who is completely soaked with water. Cecilia squeezes the water out from the bottom of her dress and removes her drenched boots. Vi flies from your collar and lands daintily on a rock, and then splays her body out and shuts her eyes, tired from lack of sleep.

“I’m glad to be out of that.” Vi says softly and turns on her side to rest.

You work on looking for things that can help you start a fire. The forest is completely soaked right now so you venture further into the cave in hope of finding a stray branch or something appropriate for tinder.

You wander over to a large pile of strange rocks that contain dried out orange moss on them and begin to pull out clumps of it and walk over to where you plan on starting the fire and successfully get a small one going.

Suddenly you hear something stir behind you. The strange pile of rocks begins to stand and in front of you is a large cave troll, standing well over a head taller than you, his moss and rock covered body lumbers forward slowly, he makes eye contact with you and roars menacingly.

Cecilia gasps behind you. Vi is still on the rock in front of you, she has fallen asleep and is blissfully unaware of the danger she is in. The cave troll seems unaware of your fairy companion.

Your hand reaches for your sword.

You run forward to attack, placing yourself between the cave troll and Vi.

“Grab her!” You yell to Cecilia as you barely dodge a fist slamming down on your head.

Cecilia runs to grab Vi, but slips on a wet rock. She cries out in pain, she may have twisted her ankle.
The sight of Cecilia falling distracts you and you don’t see the cave troll swipe his arm into your side.

You are slammed into the rock wall close to Cecilia, breath being forced from your lungs, you think some ribs may be cracked.

“Vi!” Cecilia shouts again and again, but the fairy doesn’t rouse.

You get up unsteadily. The cave troll has seemed to notice Vi now lying defenseless.

You clutch your sword tightly in your hand and steady yourself. The cave troll is closer to Vi than you are, but you are faster than it. You charge to save her.

An extremely sharp pain in your chest causes you to falter. The troll takes advantage of this and hurls a large rock at you. You clumsily leap to the side, but it still manages to strike you in the leg. Your sword is knocked from your hand.
You cry out in pain as you land hard on your side. The pain in your leg doesn’t allow you to stand so all you can do is watch as the cave troll plucks Vi off the rock.

Finally she rouses, but it is too late.

She screams, trying to wrest herself from the trolls clutches. “No! NO! ED! ED! HELP M-!” You hear her fade away as she is swallowed whole.

You cringe from the sight. Cecilia screams out in horror.
The troll seems to be delighting in his meal, and has for the moment forgotten about you.

Vi dead because of stupid dice and hyperlethality and now quest dead because of stupid system.

The dice aren't stupid, I'm just really good at rolling 1's. Three in a row was too tough though.
>>
>>36355300
Not really, its an almost 30% chance to get a crit in the first three rolls with crits overriding.

Add in stupidcrap like worst of three and a difficulty level like this and you should not expect to last more than 3 threads before your own stupid system ends things

You crawl forward desperately reaching out for your sword. A lost man, in a lost world. Your frustrations well up as you pull one arm in front of the arm, dirt dragging underneath your chest.

“Ed, no!” Cecilia cries out, but you aren’t listening.

The troll notices you approach and lumbers forward.

You didn’t ask for any of this, you didn’t ask to be ripped from wherever you came from and to end up here. But yet, here you are. It feels like one long dream, but the pain in your body is telling you otherwise.

You reach the hilt of the familiar sword and clutch it in your fingers.

The troll places a heavy foot on your hand denying it movement.

“Ahh, damn.” You say quietly and turn your head look out to the forest.

You can’t move any further as a heavy foot rests on top of your head.
The trees quiver in the wind, the rain has stopped and the sun has come through. The dew drops on the on the multicolored leaves shine brilliantly in all places of the forest.
The heavy foot press down on your head.

“Beautiful.” You say quietly.

THE END.

Thank you very much to everyone who played. I'm assuming that there will be some discussion, questions, and some derogatory remarks directed at me, so please feel free to post in the thread and I will do my best to respond.
>>
>>36355827
Well this was disappointing...
>>
>>36355827
Need to either adjust crits or move to a wider dice base. Of course that one anon rolling for two 1 on purpose didn't help either. For exampleif you want to stick with d20s the Archelon system of rolling might be best. a 1 simply negates the highest roll and a 20 is only a crit success if you have another number clear the DC.
>>
>>36355827
Sigh. Another one bites the dust. Too bad, Auri
>>
>>36355827
>>36355923

Here. You paint a vivid world and your not an easy going Qm. You make us think and plan. Your world is also very good as is your player interaction. The dice system is just too erratic for us to make any headway.

rolling and calling those ones was almost as good as the time I rolled 3 twenties in a row. thanks for running!

Thank you everyone who has left their comments in the thread, I will do my best to learn from them and improve future quests, so never be afraid to comment if something doesn't sit well with you.

On a lighter note, to all those interested. Would you prefer a brand new quest, a revamp of Miasma Quest, or a revamp of Otherworldly Arboretum?
>>
>>36356218
Leave off otherworldly arboretum for now, too soon. I'm good with either or on the other 2.
>>
>>36356218

>>
>>36356218
I still have to archive read miasma. We should revamp this one, since we didn't get far enough to spoil anything anyway.
>>
>>36356218
A revamp of this quest would be my choice.
>>
A revamp or retcon of this followed by another go at Miasma would suit me.
>>
>>36356035
Ari, I don't say this on the intrest of making future quest easier but in the intrest of you understanding exactly how your games realistic work.

/tg/'s dice work on a sort of predetermined sequence. The important thing about this is that instead of being random (or even pseudo random) thir number sequences work in a pattern that only diviates from the last roll by a certain ammount. What this means is that you often get "thrends" that stabilize around a certain number range.

Now why this is important to your quest is that due to the combination of high lethality and your specific game mechanics (avrage/worst when in a disadvantageous position) something that's not uncommon at all like a trend clusterd around a low number can either kill alot of characters or end your quest completly.

Really the point here is that if you don't change something any quest you run is going to end like this just because it's statically improbable for it not to.
>>
>>36356429
lol
that's completely incorrect though
the dice are based on "randomized" post time
don't be retarded
>>
>>36356429
>>36356483
Regardless, the improbability of success is apparent and I guarantee that there will a change to the dice system for next time, but careful choices and planning will still be required. Thank you for commenting.

~

A revamp of Otherworldly Arboretum it is. I will begin Thursday the 27th to allow for the dust to settle a bit. Hope to see you all again!
