Welcome back to Mysteries of the Atlas Quest! Last time: We pubstomped some thugs, then took up a job with the Civic Guard to escort a convoy. Then everything changed when the Elf assassins attacked.

>Anai currently has 4exp.

It seems that your propensity for having awful days has yet to improve. It was supposed to be simple, drive a bunch of food down to the port, mill around the market for a bit, and collect some spending money. Of course, you knew it wouldn't be that easy from the second you saw the big frosty knight and the beefed up security, but a girl can dream can’t she?

You are Anai, an Atlas-user. Your cargo is currently on fire, and employer bleeding out on the cobblestone. Peachy.

As the last of the gore spray from your fallen employer hits your cheek, the scent of iron and pine needles overtakes your senses. No wonder you couldn't smell them, they smell like the river. The assailant looks to you and Winter and strikes a ready pose. It seems they yet have business here, and you’re in the way. Two of the four guards were killed in the initial ambush, leaving you, Winter, and two guards against at least six elves judging by the amount of arrows in the convoy. You hear sounds from the heavily armed freighter, which has stopped lowering its ramp onto the dock. You see that none of the heavy cannons are manned, but hear a series of small popping explosions from the other side of the deck out of your vision. Winter stands beside you, his body surrounded again by his ghostly blue armor, with his sword drawn and level with the assassin’s chest. Winter glances sideways at you and nods. He appears to be following your lead. It seems no backup is coming from the boat, and with the now panicked crowds, reinforcements from the Civic Guard will be late, if they come at all. The two guards with you are standing behind you shaking in their boots, scanning the crowd behind you for the Elf’s compatriots.

>What will you do?
>Parley, you need to know what they’re doing and why. (Requires a write-in)
>Fight the lead assassin one on one. (Either you or Winter, the other would be free to assist elsewhere)
>Fight the leader together.
>Run
>Other (Write-in)

Also if you would like to upgrade or buy a new ability, now would be a fairly good point to do so. Post any suggestions to this end with your vote.

You're pretty sure you can still be paid, the Civic Guard posted the job, not this captain specifically. Perhaps employer was the wrong term. Running at this point would be a purely risk/reward decision. The reward was 20g plus 10g a head, if I recall correctly.

The experience rules have changed since thread 2, each new rank costs the rank # in points. Raising skill at this point would cost 6. If there's a stat you wish to improve with those pointsi n particular, all stats now have a rank #, the default is 0 for unimproved stats.

Gonna give it a little more for people to show up while I finish my dinner, there doesn't seem to be a /qtg/ last I looked, so newcomers might be a bit slow.

You hesitate for a long moment. Your rational mind screams at you that you have no investment in this, no reason beyond a hefty sum of gold if you don't get killed to stay and fight. At the same time fighting feels right, it feels natural and exciting, and the sight of the masked elf framed by the burning cart sets your blood boiling. They came here to start a fight, and you'd love to give them one. You look over to Winter for some kind of answer, and see nothing but cold steel waiting to spring to action in his eyes.

You charge forward, thrusting your dagger towards his chest, but with a twist of his body he deflects your attack with his scimitar. You could swear you hear him smirk from under the mask, but it seems it cost him some effort, you’re not sure if he could keep that up forever. Especially since there are two of you. He sees Winter crash towards him, greatsword flying at unnatural speed.
>Elf cedes action for an increase to defense until next turn. Bonus equal to half Physical Attack. This is now an option for you as well.
>Winter attacks with Executioner’s Swing, stamina 9/10. Fails to hit by a small margin.

…And his swing goes wide as the elf ducks below the hulking piece of steel.

It is once again your move. Two elves have made their way to the fight, and are being engaged by the guardsmen.

Your kick lands true, forcing the air out of his lungs. He resists the urge to double over as a gust of wind surrounds him and speeds up his movements. He sends a swing of his scimitar at you, and then at Winter. His strike passes through Winter's armor with a hissing screech and finds purchase. Blood begins to drip from Winter's tunic, but he seems unfazed as he brings his greatsword down in a vertical slice, giving the elf a gaping wound. As the elf draws back Winter lets out another swing which the assassin parries again. He appears to be on his last legs.

>The Elf has received Haste from an unknown assistant. He attacks both you and Winter. If this roll exceeds 18, select a defensive option.

Not giving the elf a second of relief from your combined onslaught you send a roundhouse kick which impacts the side of his masked head, sending him crashing into the pavement. His mask falls off, now cracked slightly, to reveal a heavily scarred veteran, who looks old even by elf standards. He is now quite clearly unconscious, and you bring your leg back in and assess the situation. The mage throws a fire spell at you and Winter, and the three elves now press their numbers advantage on the guards.

You swirl and dance with your own wind magic, deftly avoiding the arrow and then tucking yourself in tight and unleashing two blades of air at the two elves. The archer is hit full force, and flies off the roof bleeding into an alley behind the building. The mage takes the hit well, diffusing it with her staff. Her fire spell strikes home however, and your left arm is burned rather badly, but you can still fight through the pain.

>TIL Elves suck at mass combat.

The fighting sounds die down as you hear another voice call out in the elven language "Ritiro, ritiro bastardi!" and one final volley of pops silence several more elves fleeing the scene. The smell of brimstone fills the air now as Winter trods over to you, dragging the unconscious elf leader with him and dropping him next to the woman. You notice the leader's cut from before has healed over without a scratch, but his newer wounds are still fresh.

"Not bad for a girl." he jests. "I wish we could have helped the guardsmen faster."

You shrug at him.
“We were caught by surprise, I just thank the gods they are better assassins than warriors or this city might be in real trouble. You got something to tie these two up?”

He nods and shrugs a small brown pack identical to your own out from under his cloak, his armor now faded out of existence. He pulls two lengths of rope from the bag and assists you in tying up the prisoners.
“You gonna be alright Frosty? You’re still bleeding.” You ask, some genuine concern creeping in despite the nickname.
“It’s Winter, and yeah I’ll be fine, they’ll close up any minute now and I’ll be really hungry.” You raise an eyebrow. He shrugs back at you.

“Moving on, what should we do with these two?” you ask. He thinks for a minute before answering. “Personally I’d take their weapons, and search for indicators of why they might have done this, the old geezer seemed to know what to do. Then we turn ‘em over to the guard for our bounty. Three to you, and two to me, it’s a nice bonus.”

Specifically the mage and the leader, we could do with their weapons.
Also, their clothes and armor, but we'll grab those later.

You resolve to grab what you can, a mercenary has right to whatever they find after all. You leave the two with Winter after searching them, and go around picking up weapons and putting them in the Inventory. Winter asks that you let him have the gear from the ones he killed, and you agree to it, since they aren't carrying much of consequence, just some ration bread that tastes stale, wrapped in leaves, and their scimitars. The leader's pouch yields a letter written in his native language, probably his orders, and his scimitar feels light and well made, it will be a worthy addition to your small curved dagger. The mage's pouch contains some small vials of liquid, one blue one red. Her staff is a 5 foot long pine number, with a red gem embedded in the tip which appears to have a flame burning inside it. The archer you slew has a simple bow, and a quiver of arrows.

As you return to the leader, you remember his mask, slightly cracked, sitting on the pavement. You pick it up and place it in the bag, maybe you'll sell it or something later.

Winter has by now roused the assassin, and he is grumbling angrily at Winters attempts to interrogate him. "Io non vi dirò nulla, bastardi." he croaks.

Winter sighs and lets the old man fall back to the floor, eliciting a groan of pain. "If he speaks common, he isn't showing it. You want a crack at him?"

"Would you mind very much telling me why you're attacking this town? I'm afraid I'm not from this land, and don't know the local politics." you say, smiling politely. He looks up at you, almost with disbelief at being treated so gently. Recognition dawns on his face as he notices your long black ears.

"Anubian, eh?" he coughs. "That explains much. The details of my mission are in that letter. As for why..." he stares off into the distance, as if remembering a painful memory. "The Burning King and his death machines must be stopped. Those sounds on the ship, they are the sounds of death. When he is finished with us, he will come for you."

The assassin looks to the mage, his eyes pleading. "Please, Anubian...either free us or kill us, for anything the servants of the Burning King will do to us is a fate worse than death.

Winter looks away with what looks like a mix between guilt and hatred on his face.

The assassin looks at Winter. "I see your soul boy, your lineage. Winter has touched you."
He shudders.
"Winter? What the hell is he talking about Frosty?" you ask.

He turns back to face you, regret in his eyes. "They'll be disembarking soon, and the guard is on their way...He's right about one thing, what awaits him is definitely worse than death, and I'm not even going to ponder her fate. I have no right to judge elves anymore. This is your call, and I will follow your lead."

You hear sounds of machinery from inside the Ironclad, and now notice the banners flying above it, twin dragons spouting a gout of flame.

Decision time.

"Winter...get the elves inside a house and watch them...I'm going to see the other side of this coin." He nods solemnly and grabs the two, throwing them over his shoulders and ducking inside a nearby house, cracking the door so you can see him. You stand facing the Ironclad, retrieving Atlas from your bag. "If this goes south, can you bail us all out?" you ask.

"Absolutely miss Anai, anyone you choose to designate as your ally who accepts that title can follow you when you use the HOME command." he answers quickly. You nod. "Good, we might need that."

The ship's ramp begins descending with a mechanical groan. Men have now manned the heavy cannons and are surveying the area for further enemy contacts.

The ramp descends as you stand alone in the deserted market square, several stalls now low-burning cinders, bodies of man and elf alike strewn across the battlefield. The ramp finally touches down, and from inside you hear the sounds of marching feet.

A score of men marching in unison, all in black and red highlighted leather armor bearing the insignia of the twin dragons and carrying what you recognize for some reason as old-fashioned rifles, file out onto the square and create a line. A rugged looking man with a longsword and an ornate pistol follows them out, surveying the field looking incredibly pleased. His eyes settle on you and he furrows his brow.

"All this chaos, only one little mutt-girl? You slew all these knife-ears yourself? Admirable."

He turns to the houses around you and speaks, projecting over the large square. "It would appear the Civic Guard are inadequate to protect you, or your visiting dignitaries, from brutal attack. As such my men and I will be taking control of this city immediately. Rejoice, citizens, for the State of Nolan is now under the protection of the Korvan Empire."

He returns his gaze to you. "Now, dear mutt-girl, what did you want?"

>What DO you want.

"My pay, for one." you demand.

"Pay? I'm afraid I'm all out of treats, so the humble thanks of the Korvan Empire will have to suffice, mutt-girl." His men laugh.
Pompous ass.
"Now see here you mouthbreathing Corvette or whatever. You will address me by my name, or in lieu of that I will accept Miss, My Lady, or Your Highness. After all I do apologize, but I seem to have already claimed this state for myself, and I am its defender as you can plainly see." you gesture to the carnage.

He and his men laugh again. "You make excellent jokes, perhaps you can be our jester, Lady Mutt. I hardly think you can defend Nolan, all by your lonesome, and me with my score of men. What do you have that I don't?" At this comment they level their rifles at you. Yikes.

You quickly take stock of your surroundings. In his boasting the magistrate has come almost face to face with you, and he isn't much taller. You spy the lockbox sitting on top of the slagged wagon. You were getting paid one way or another, and they certainly weren't going to do it. An idea begins to bounce around in your head.

"What do I have? Let me think...for one thing, You!" he looks surprised for a minute as you use his shoulder for leverage, boosting yourself up and over behind him, pressing your knife against his throat and holding him by the arm. His men immediately rush forward, weapons still aimed at you. "Tut tut tut, no shooting or he gets it! You better tell them to back off." you say to the now panicked magistrate. He stutters out the command to hold, as you edge closer to the cart. Winter and the two elves, both now awake are looking at you worriedly from the door of the house across the square. You reach the cart and give them a wink.

His men begin to move to flank you, as you climb backwards into the wreckage with your hostage. You reach the lockbox, tapping it with your foot to confirm it's still full. Blissfully so. The guns now leveled nearly an arms length away, you let go with your free hand and grab the pistol from its holster and kick him forward into his men. "For another, I've got your gun, and a shiny new lockbox. Oh yes, and how could I forget."

The book you had dropped at your feet begins to glow, pages flipping open and emitting arcane energy. "An Atlas! Execute command, HOME!"

And with that his men open fire as a blue swirling mass of arcane energy envelops you and sends you spinning through space. You arrive safely, lockbox and new friends in tow, in your pub room.
Time to skip town.

I enjoyed the thread, I must admit in rather confused as to what's happening though
>>
>>36363996
Nobody mentioned killing him, though I will say he has a nasty scar from where you cut him with your knife from the kick. Immediate medical attention was needed to keep him from dying, but dude's got more than 1hp, and even a successful attack is only gonna do one. The short answer is plot armor. You'll get your chance to kill him once and for all soon enough.

Usually how it happens in movies is you take the hostage simply to secure an escape route. I would've broken down this sequence a lot more and given more choices except it's been a long thread already, and I was slipping. Need to improve my stamina.
