News, let's see.

This week is super wacky in terms of work. Long story short, trucks are offset by a day because nothing runs Thursday. That's why we're running today instead of tomorrow.

Sorry about last week, kind of a combination of things happened there. I'd figured between SWQ and PJW everything would have been ok, but I guess planefag had issues of his own that day? Either way, sorry about that and the short notice there.

Oh, I've been told I'll be moving in a couple months, so there may be a week or two while I'm waiting for internet to be hooked up. More on that as it happens.

Berlin, you think, has been recovering from it's former brush as the front line very quickly. Driving around the city, it's hard to tell there's a war on, really. Well, kind of- the population seems too small for a city this size, and even though there's traffic, it's nowhere near as busy as London or Paris.

Still, the traffic is there, with the city becoming a destination for troops on leave, as well as units that have been pulled back from the lines and allowed a period of rest and refit. The second are becoming more common as liberated Polish citizens join en mass, swelling the ranks of the Polish army- there's a full four Hussar regiments now, with a further two regiment-sized cohorts of winged hussars, the best of the best of them.

The additional Polish troops have reduced the load on the rest of the allies, and they've responded by pulling the worst hit units away, with the 11th ACR- who've been on the lines since day one of the war- currently based nearby. There's not many of them left, but the 11th has produced more tank 'aces' than any other American unit. Not that you put a lot of stock in the phrase tank ace, it's a hell of a lot easier than making ace in a fighter like you. And as far as you know, most of them have slightly under half your score.

Of course, right now, those thoughts are a distant concern as you steer a borrowed Humvee through the city streets. “I'm still drawing a blank, Rosalie.” You say. “Any ideas?”

She shrugs. “I am not sure. What about something for her weapons? She always puts such effort into them. Maybe tools or an armorer's kit?”

“We've gotta be able to get it back on the bat.” You point out. “And she has access to the base armory anyway.”

“Oui, mais, that is not the same, non?” Rosalie asks. “Her own tools would perhaps mean much to her.”

“Well, what else? She doesn't have much in the way of personal belongings, maybe some nice clothes?” You ask. “You know her size, right?”

She laughs. “Monsieur Bishop! A lady does not ask such things of her sister witches!” She says, in mock scandalized outrage. “Besides. Wendy is not liking fancy clothing like we are.”

“Issue skivvies and everything, huh?” You ask, and she nods.

“Oui. They are flimsy cotton things. The English do not believe in comfort. The marine nationale issues silk.”

“I-” You pause. “How did we get on the subject of this all of a sudden?”

She laughs. “Perhaps stockings? She likes hers so much, maybe she would like another pair?”

2/3
>>
You shrug. “Well, that'd work. But it's hardly enough for everyone.”

She makes an amazing face- you can only describe it as catty. “Do you think they have not gotten her presents already?” She says, then laughs. “You are not the only one who worries about Wendy. They all want her to be taken care of.”

“Well good.” You say, relieved. “So stockings and maybe the start of an armorer's kit?”

She nods, then grins again. “And perhaps some, as you call them, skivvies. I can help you select her some good ones.”

You quirk an eyebrow. “Wouldn't that send the wrong message?”

She laughs. “It depends on what you are defining as wrong!”

You briefly consider joining a monastery and becoming a monk. It'd definitely be less insane than dealing with these witches all the time.

[] Well, let's see if we can find a real nice armorer's kit first, that's a good place to start.

You ponder for a while, then nod. “Let's start with an armorer's kit, then.” You say. “Any ideas where we'd find one?”

Rosalie laughs. “This is Berlin, there are gunmakers almost everywhere. Mais, it will be difficult to find a L85 kit here.”

You shrug. “Sure, but we can find the stuff that's common to all rifle kits, no problem, then she can add specialty tools as she goes, right?”

Rosalie nods. “Oui, that would make sense.”

You eventually end up in a gunsmith's shop- directed there by a Luftwaffe officer in town, who'd recognized Rosalie.

The door is unlocked, and a small bell chimes when you walk in- one of those old style bells hangs above the door on a small arm. A man's voice says something in German, but no one appears. Rosalie translates. “He says he will be out in a moment.”

You shrug, taking the time to look around. The man looks to be into custom work- there's no displayed weapons, though some pictures of prior work hangs along the walls. You notice several pictures of his weapons in the hands of witches, the oldest pictures in black and white, framed and hung high. You're thankful your dad made you learn small arms- you identify MG34s and 42s easily enough, some garands, a lee-enfield, You're pretty sure that one is an SVT-40, though gods only know how that happened.

>>
have the reds brought back "not one step back" yet?
>>
Eventually an old man emerges from the door behind the counter, a cane in one hand and a very noticeable limp when he walks. He looks up at you, then looks at Rosalie and nods, speaking in German. Rosalie responds, and the two have a short conversation before the old man heads into the back again.

“What was that all about?” You ask.

Rosalie shakes her head. “He says he does not sell tools here, but he has a spare set he's willing to part with.”

“I sense a but, here.” You say, somewhat drily.

“He mentioned they are extremely high quality, and will not be cheap.”

>>
[x] It's ok, I've got the money. I think.

You shrug, pulling out your wallet and looking kind of disparagingly at the monopoly colored MPC in it. While the stuff is backed by it's issuing nation and good in any allied country, it still looks stupid, you think. Orange and blue money? Stupid.

The old man walks back out with a canvas bag held in one hand, then holds up a finger when Rosalie says something and hobbles to the back again. He returns a second later with another bag, and a large cardboard box, with dust on the top and a faded shipping label on the side. He makes a effort, mostly for show, you think, of brushing the dust off. Then shrugs and begins talking to Rosalie again.

She nods, then turns to you. “He says he wants at least three thousand for everything.” She says.

You grimace. You're carrying about that much, having expected to spend most of it, though this will pretty much wipe you out. You think you can draw MPC from banks, though you're honestly not sure- normally you'd have to use the financial office on base, and you're not going to be able to fly back to Torun to draw the money, and then back here.

[x] see if you can talk him down.

You don't outwardly respond to the price, but internally you grimace. That would wipe out everything you brought, and you still need other things. “Rosaile, can you talk him down at all?” You ask, and she shrugs.

“I can try.”

They go back to talking, with the old man shaking his head repeatedly, until, finally, he seems satisfied and nods. Roaslie turns to you.

“He will go down to twenty four hundred, but not a cent less.” She says.

That's still a lot of money, of course, but it leaves you a solid six hundred and some to play with- enough for a hell of a cake, you think. You take the money out of your wallet and hand it over, shaking the old man's hand after doing so. He seems satisfied, which you suppose is the best way to end a deal- you think you did well enough, and he's clearly happy he was able to get rid of something that was just taking up space.

The tools themselves are well padded- they don't make a sound as you carry them out to the humvee, though you wait until you're inside it and around the corner from the gunsmith's before opening everything up- you'll have to repack it anyway.

It isn't just a simple armorer's kit, you realize- it's a full set of almost every tool a gunsmith could ever want. The box holds a set of reloading tools that Rosalie explains he ordered by mistake. All together, it's more than enough that she won't have to fight for tools in the armory- at this point, you can see them coming to her, asking to borrow ones she has and they don't.

Rosalie helps you get it all situated in the humvee, then returns to her seat. “Where to now?” She asks, and you can see the beginnings of a grin tugging at the corners of her mouth. “Perhaps to buy her some nice... “She pauses, then grins. “Skivvies?”

You favor her with a blank stare.

That absolutely depands on what you are looking at.
Yeah, Soviet socialist stuff generally didn't turn out so great.
But genuine Communism is a relative post-scarcity scenario.
If you can reach that, quality control of lingerie is your least problem.
You see, it's not anticapitalist but postcapitalist.

You see, Communism as a utopian idea isn't the problem.
It's just that the way there hasn't been found and all proposals kept getting more absurd.

>>
>>36381151
Konnie
>>
>>36381633
The runners up don't actually get made.
>>
>>36381618
That and the fact that everyone fucks up the first step; THE REVOLUTION STARTS IN THE FACTORY WORKERS.

The problem being that most nations that attempt to go Communist are not very industrialized.

The workers are supposed to seize the means of production, not build them. In effect, you're trying to do something capitalism does better and thus fail.
>>
>>36381653
Sure, because no-one placed an order.

I guess i'm wondering why no-one like Canadia/Japan/Aus who wanted Raptors tried to place an order for the -23 when the US was all like "lol no Export -22 4 u"
>>
>>36381618
>>36381694
Also, communism has been proven to fail every time it's tried due to the fact it ignores human nature and history. Even China is starting to move away from it to a more capitalist based nation.
>>
>>36381718
Production lines and building them are expensive, most nations simply can't afford it.

Last time I checked the US spent more money on military spending by itself than the next ten countries combined. Could have changed since then, but it's still retardedly expensive.
>>
>>36381744
Never bet against human sloth and incompetence.
>>
>>36381718
To be fair, Australian didn't need Raptor and Raptor itself not fulfilling their main need, ground support.
>>
>>36381795
And that's only at the bottom.
>>
>>36381764
So basically next largest allied country by spending are France/UK at $61 and $58 billion each. Lifetime cost of the F-22 program? $66.7 billion.
>>
>>36381801
>our main need is ground support
lol
We got fuckloads of Hornets and used to have fuckloads of F-111s, we've never been hurting in the ground support role
>>
>>36381801
They tried to buy it anyway.

Also;
>Australia's main need is ground support
Nope. It's main requirement is Air Superiority, interdiction and patrol; especially ability to counter the air forces of it's neighbors.
The fact that it happens to be doing ground attack missions right now does not mean that it's the primary strategic need of the RAAF.
>>
>>36381858
So why do you need F-22 raptor anyway?
Indonesian have every reason to keep friendly with Aussie.
Malaysian is a joke.
Other ASEAN countries is too far to be direct threat for Aussie.
China? not before they walk over dead bodies of Philippines and Vietnamese.

>>36381890
Noted.
>>
>>36381744
You are talking Socialism, though.
Communism is a proposed goal, not the means of reaching it.
Socialism hasn't proven very effective at leading states from Capitalism to Communism that weren't Capitalist or industrial to begin with.

It was not supposed to be forced upon the people or act against their interests but follow naturally from the increasingly suppressive Capitalist regime whose suppression was seen as a sign of it failing.
Naturally the predictions failed and most of the specifics turned out very wrong in practical application.

Still, many ideas brought forward hold some merit. Even though their proponents as opponents are usually too caught up in ideology to see what's salvageable and where truth lies.
>>
>>36381764
>>36381847
>F-22 Program cost: US$66.7 billion
>F-35 Program cost: US$1.0165 trillion

Unit cost on the F-35 is only projected to be lower because of sheer volume produced. And the F-35B is still on a par with the F-22 in terms of flyaway price anyway.

Singapore has some air assets in Australia. And we go to Australia every year for exercises.

Auatralia's biggest opponent is that tiny oligarchic corporate entity that claims it's a soverign country. And they own Telstra and Optus.
>>
>>36381927
>Indonesian have every reason to keep friendly with Aussie.
Traditionally they have not been, and for much of the '80s and '90s, one of the biggest reasons they actually played ball was because F-111s were standing ready to tun Jarkata into a crater at a moment's notice.

Furthermore, military preparedness has never been well served by presuming your neighbors aren't going to start shit no matter how problematic it may be for them. Australia does put a lot of effort into maintaining technical superiority as much as possible; hence why they have twice as many F-35s on order as they have Hornets in service now.
>>

[x] Do I look suicidal to you? Don't answer that. Stockings, maybe a scarf, that's it

You snort. “Do I look suicidal to you?”

You cut her off when she takes a breath to answer. “Don't answer that. Stockings, maybe a scarf. That's it.”

“Ah, a shame.” Rosalie says with a grin. “It would make such a love story, oui? Tres romantique!”

You elect not to answer as she continues. “A girl is brought from crushing hopelessness into a world she couldn't have dreamed of by a knight in shining armor-”

“It was mostly Ice, really.” You say, but she either doesn't hear or doesn't care.

“And she is happy to be there, but lost and confused about her place at the same time!”

“Are you just making this up as you go along?”

“And then her hero shows his affection for her, and she is to embarrassed and shy to return it openly! But then, that night, she comes to him privately and-”

“Now I know you're just making it up.”

She grins. “Am I? Perhaps. It would be a good love story anyway.”

You shrug. “Sounds kinda like those ones Ice likes so much, the whatsit? Dragon riders of Texas?”

She nods, with a laugh. “Maybe, but it is very cliched, even for them.”

You actually have to search for a while before you find a place that has any decent number of stockings- funnily enough, it's a video shop, specializing in those Japanese cartoons like Merlin likes so much. You guess the stockings are for costumes? You're not sure. The sign, Rosalie said, did say they did custom alterations and embroidery to any clothing, too, so it seemed like a good bet.

Communism and Socialism are often a package deal. When you get one, you will also get the other even if you don't want it.

There are other underlining issues with communism that doom it as applied to the real world. But this isn't the place to talk about it. But it is nice to speak with someone who thoughtfully speaks about it with out descending into a shouting match.
>>
Inside, the place is nearly deserted, though the girl behind the counter, leafing through a comic book, looks up breifly, then back down at her book, uninterested. You and Rosalie make your way to the back, where there's a wall of socks and stockings in just about every color known to man, surrounded by pictures of animated girls wearing them and an associated product code.

“they get pretty into this, huh?” You ask, trying to eyeball something that jumps out at you.

Rosalie shrugs. “Samantha seems to. She has talked about wishing to try a costume when she gets home.”

You eyeball some of the pictures again- some of those girls aren't wearing much but their stockings.

“Hopefully not like those.” You say, indicating the pictures, and she laughs.

“What are you thinking?” She says. “Perhaps I can help.”

[x] See those really dark blue ones over there? I have an idea.

You point at a pair of dark blue- almost black- thighhighs. “See those?” You ask, and Rosalie nods. “I have an idea.” You grab a pair, then look back at her. “And grab about fifteen pair of those gray ones, we can get the squadron crest sewn on for everyone.

“How thoughtful.” Rosalie says, with a grin. “And this is in no way you stating your preference to see girls in long stockings, oui?”

“I couldn’t possibly comment.” You say, and she laughs. Girl's been hanging around mav too much, lately.

While it does bite another significant chunk out of your remaining cash, eventually you have sixteen pairs of custom embroidered socks, and one VHS set of some show called Super Dimensional Fortress Macross, which you seem to remember Merlin liking. At least, the pictures on the front you remember, with that one-seat not-quite-a-tomcat looking aircraft in space.

You give Rosalie her pair of stockings on her promise she won't put them on till after everyone has theirs, and look around. “Ok, so I'm getting pretty broke, here. What else do we need?” You ask.

STEAK CAKE
>>
“Cake.” She says. “Mais, it will be difficult to get a cake back to the airbase intact and without Wendy knowing, oui?” She looks up at the sky- it's not getting dark yet, but it's getting kind of late in the afternoon, too. “And it is getting late, do you wish to be flying after dark? The Soviets, they are more active over the night hours.”

“Yeah, good point.” You say, thinking. If you spend too much time here, you'll have to fly home in the dark. While you're pretty far behind the lines and probably safe to do so, you never know when a deep penetration raid will happen, and they've got pilots good enough that they could pull it off. Besides, keeping a cake in good shape on the flight back, as well as keeping it a secret from Wendy, is going to be a lot of work.

[] Yeah, let's round up Wendy and head back, we'll make the cake there. I don't want to run the risk

[x] Yeah, let's round up Wendy and head back, we'll make the cake there. I don't want to run the risk

You nod. “Yeah, let's round up Wendy and head back.” You say. You don't want to run the risk of encountering soviet fighter-bombers at night in a forty year old prop-driven aircraft, let alone one that's been disarmed and no longer boasts it's radar equipment.

The two of you head back to Tempelhof, where you find Wendy waiting by her striker rack, reading a book, with a small bag now. She looks up when the two of you approach, smiling. “Sir Bishop, Miss Kent. Did you find whatever it was you were looking for in town?”

You nod. “Yep, we didn't have any problems. I see you did some shopping of your own.” You gesture to the bag.

She nods. “Yes, I hope that's alright. If it isn't, I suppose I can give them to the local library or something, these were just titles I'd always wanted to read.” She says, closing her book without marking her place.

“No, it's fine. We've got plenty of space for them.” You say. “You ready to head home?”

She looks around, but nods. “I am, yes. Though I think I should like to come back here some day, if I can.”

“I don't see why you couldn't.” You respond. “Here, hand me your books, I'll go get everything loaded up.”

“How can I help?” Wendy asks, giving you the bag. You laugh.

“By getting ready to go.” You say, then look down at her. “You're a little too short to reach up into the cargo compartments, Wendy.”

She nods and heads back inside the hangar, while you take the brief window to load everything into the Bat and secure it in place.

1/3
>>
Rosalie walks out right before Wendy drifts out, the wyvern striker's wheels still deployed. You've always admired how those girls can trust those things, tilted forwards like they are. You'd be afraid you were about to faceplant right into the tarmac.

You climb up into the Bat and start your checklists while Rosalie exchanges a few words with Wendy and climbs up behind you. She winches the canopy forward against it's seal while you start up the big wrights, their snorting, coughing start quickly giving way to the smooth background roar of their pistons firing in time.

“She has no idea.” She says as you roll forward, keeping an eye on Wendy in the mirror as she follows behind you- she's balancing better, but you can tell she's still being very cautious about it. “She thinks we were on official business.”

“We kinda were.” you say, pulling aside to let Wendy lead the takeoff- no reason to buffet her with your propwash and the turbulence you'll create on takeoff. “Kinda.”

Rosalie laughs at that.

The flight home is quiet, with you touching down at Torun just before sundown. The squadron hangar is dark, and you can't see any other aircraft- the flight line looks almost deserted. Kind of strange, but everything else is up and lit, and you can see plenty of people moving around, just no fighters. Maybe they're up, you think, though a nighttime mission is odd for them.

2/3
>>
You park the Bat out on the tarmac and get out, using the built in crew ladder, and Rosalie goes in to distract Wendy while you pull out the cargo and make for the house at a run. Part of you wonders how patently ridiculous you look sprinting across the base with a cardboard box, two leather rolls, and a couple plastic shopping bags in your arms, but you decide not to worry about it.

You hit the door at a run, using your one semi-free hand to open it and run into the house. You don't even pause to say hi to anyone, throwing the assorted goods in your room and slamming the door shut, then walking back downstairs, trying not to look like you just sprinted a good three quarters of a mile.

That's when you notice just about everyone in the common room, watching the TV there. Or, they were, but now ten pairs of eyes are staring dead at you.

You're Lt. Frank Bishop and you are bored.
You wanted to be out on patrol, but no, you're stuck in the office filling out paperwork after that last mishap on the runway. The one with all the noodles and the angry congressmen. At the very least, you were able to plan out time to take Merlin out for ice cream after you were finished with all this watch-wearing dildo office work.

The sound your office door breaks the silence in the office. You look up to find Mav looking down at you, wearing a flight suit far too small for her.

What do?

[x] Pheonix her Missiles
[x] Grumman her Tomcats
[x] Sweep her wings
[x] Top her Guns
[x] Fire our handgun into the air and yell loudly
[x] Write in

non-canon, duh. As for the arms, her far arm is bent up and should end up resting on her breast but I fucked up the rendering of the cat suit and it's hard to tell.

[x] yes, hello. What's news here? Where are all the other steelwings?

You stare at them, and they stare back. For a solid five seconds, no one says anything. Finally, you shrug. “Yes? Hello.” You say, starting back down the stairs. “What's news here, where are all the other steelwings?”

“Torun east.” Ice says, as the witches start looking back at the TV- though Merlin gets up and comes over for a hug. “3rd wing is due in tomorrow, they finished clearing while you were in Berlin. Pretty easy for them when they could drive most of their equipment there. Now why did you run in here like your hair was on fire? What was that pile of stuff, that's all for Wendy?”

You shoot a glance at the door- Rosalie is being amazingly good about this, and you can only now see them walking across the field.

I was born in '92 and other than some Speed Racer when I was really young, I didn't watch or really know about Anime until like, '99 or 2000, I think? [x] Yeah.

You grin and return Merlin's hug- she's still wearing a kimono, though it's changed patterns. Maybe this is an evening one? You'd ask Sakamoto, but for some reason, you get the feeling doing so here might not be the best idea.

Instead you follow Merlin back to the couch, where you end up having to sit on the floor anyway, reclining against Slider's legs. “Yeah. It's all hers. Shit, she deserves it, right?” You ask.

“Yeah.” Slider answers for Ice, adjusting her leg you the back of your head isn't resting directly on her kneecap. “But it's still a lot of shit. How much did you spend?”

“More than the lot of you, I bet.” You say, tilting your head to look up at her and stick your tongue out.

She flicks you on the forehead. “This isn't a competition, asshat. Besides, most of us haven't been able to just fly back to Berlin, you know.”

“Probably about three grand, all told.” You admit with a shrug. “We weren't bad hurting for time, but I only found one place with what I wanted.”

“That's not too bad, then.” Ice says. “Though I didn't spend anywhere near that much, I still had to call in some favors.”

Ice looks over at her, and she shrugs. “He be agreein, and you be too. Don worry none a-tall, I be makin sure he be behavin while I got im.”

“We'll still have time for Wendy's party, right?” You ask.

Brigitte shrugs. “I don be seein why not, but tomorrow we be goin in so ya can be talkin to my bosses, be findin out what ya be doin. Workin with me, it not as easy as jus being da bess in da air, no. But I tink ya be alright doin it.”
