>Previously
After meeting up with the attractive but annoying (though perhaps not quite as annoying to you as you are to her) thief-girl Zhu'er who joined your quest (much as a leech is "joined" with the person it's sucking on as far as you're concerned), you arrived at Chengdu, discovering it is in the middle of the Top Ten Young Heroes Tournament, putting a bewildering array of possible suspects for your father's kidnapper in the city.

After finding an inn with Zhu'er and discovering the money you carry with you is in fact a small fortune in silver, you met a pushy saberman around your age whom you inadvertently divested of his room and table.

After he challanged you to a match over it, you declined, prompting him to surprisingly offer you a drink instead, which you accepted!
>>
>>36390547
The xia in red walks off to the innkeeper to get drinks, and Zhu'er watches him leave before suddenly thumping face-first onto the table after releasing her tension.

"Sky, you can't just...brush off challenges like that one! You're lucky that guy took it so well, but to so blatantly disregard someone's challenge is generally considered a pretty insulting thing to do! He might have been even angrier with you!"

"And I'm sure at some point that's going to be hugely relevant information," you say sardonically, turning to face her.

She blushes again, folding her arms like a petulant child. "You don't need to be so...so MEAN to me all the time! I was trying to be helpful and all you ever do is make fun of me for it!"

You sigh and run a hand through your hair.
"Look, I'm sorry alright?" you apologize attempting to soften your tone, but unsure how successful you really are at it. You never were really very good at the whole "feelings" thing.

"I'm just kinda on edge I guess. I'm figuring out half of this stuff as I go along and I actually DO need help with this. I'm just trying to figure how a thief knows so much about this stuff in the first place and you aren't giving me a lot of answers there," you note.

"I know some kungfu too. It was part of my family stuff, the one I ran away from. I just haven't shown you any yet," she explains.

"And honestly you're lucky to have me here, since it seems like I know a lot more about Wulin stuff then you and the only cost for me telling you feeding me, which seems pretty cheap seeing you have a fortune on you and can hunt for yourself," she points out.

"And if all else fails, I can have you steal fish for me. Oh wait. That might not work, will it?"

She huffs and looks aside mumbling something you only catch part of.

"What about me having my shirt off helped me catch you?" you ask aloud, raising your eyebrow in confusion.

She looks down and turns a shade of red so vibrant you're afraid she's gonna faint, but whatever she's planning to say in response is cut off when the saberman comes back, plunking a HUGE clay jug on the table!

"Okay, got the booze!" he says, pausing as he sees Zhu'er's embarrassed face.

"What's her problem?"

"She's an unsuccessful fish-thief," you say, waving it off.

"Ah, I see. Cheer up Greendilocks, you'll manage to nab one one of these days!"

"Thanks," Zhu'er mumbles, dripping with sarcasm at his "Greendilocks" comment.

The saberman, pours a couple large bowls of baiju rice wine, and is about to toast you before pausing.

"Wait. We don't even know each other's names yet!" he says, blinking.

"I'm Tiankong."

"Zhu'er."

"I'm Duan Lei," he greets, then he downs his bowl.

Zhu'er blinks.

"You're White Saber Duan? The Swifest Saber of Hunan?" she says incredulously.

"Ayup, that's me," he admits grinning with pearly white teeth.

"So, somebody I should know then," you say, looking over at Zhu'er.

"He's famous in Hunan and sons of the other southern provinces. He once fought off three expert swordsman single-handedly to prove his worth to a lady he was wooing. Later he fought practically half of the Wolf Clan to a standstill protecting a town in Hubei all by himself," she says, clearly impressed by these things, though you personally have no context for them.

"Huh. Was she good-looking?"

"Hmm?" he asks, already on his second bowl.

"The girl you were wooing."

"Oh! Yeah, it didn't work out. Whole thing was a waste of time really," he admits, scratching the back of his neck.

"He's most notable for learning from several different Masters but otherwise almost conpletely developing his own fighting style from experience alone, and having aquired a weapon of legendary quality, the Nine Star Saber, all without having any martial lineage to speak of!"

"Really?" that last part actually manages to impress you.

"Yep. My parents were farmers!" he admits, and you toast him and drink to that.

"What about you Skyguy? What clan or sect are you from? I was gonna guess the Beggar's Fraternity, but you don't smell enough,"

You decide to let the implication that you smell a LITTLE bit slide, since he seems like an alright guy. Kinda reminds you of Lobsang back in Shuzheng.

"No clan. I was trained by my father up in the mountains. I dunno who trained him, but it was always just us," you explain.

"I like that! Who needs clans and sects, they just complicate everything anyway! The whole things about finding worthy fights and challanging yourself, all the politics just muddy the waters!" he says, nodding his head.

You find yourself nodding your head right along with him; that sounds pretty much like what your father always taught, all this OTHER stuff never came into that philosophy!

"Right? I mean if you've got time to go play mind-games and havs petty faction wars then you have time to train and do good deeds, don't you?" you say, suddenly more impassioned on a subject then you have since your father went missing.

"Exactly! Wow, I don't think anybody ever got what I'm talking about as fast as you!" he admits. "They all look at me like I'm crazy or something!"

"Right, because WE'RE the crazy ones for training and focusing on our skills while they waste time plotting, huh?" you agree with folded arms, nodding sagely, taking another bowl of wine into you.

"I mean you never hear about Sword Devil Dugu Qiubai's sect or Storm Dragon Feng Renshu's clan! They just MADE themselves famous and mighty, all by themselves!"

Zhu'er looks perhaps not as thrilled to have met your spiritual twin, especially not that said spiritual twin is a xia of note and thus she can't claim his attitudes stem from ignorance of the Wulin.

"Well I'm glad YOU two are getting along so well," she says acerbicly, huffing again. "I'm going to go take a bath while the pair of you....BOYS laugh it up!"

She gets up and leaves, both of you watching her go.

"Wow," Lei says solemly. "She is REALLY upset about those fish she wasn't able to steal, isn't she?"

There's a brief pause as you look at each other before you both explode into huge guffaws of laughter, and you can't help slapping the table in your amusement.

"Oh man...," you say, wiping a year out of your eye. "That was pretty good,"

"Thanks, I try. So why are you in town anyway?" he asks, pouring another bowl (his fifth you think).

"My father got kidnapped," you say honestly.

"No!" Lei says, his expression severe. "What kinda asshole does that?! You know where they are?"

"I don't even know WHO they are! I never even saw the sons of bitches, that's the worst part! I think they were with this arrogant guy who was trying to goad me into fighting him the dead before though, and he was supposed to be coming here!" you explain fully.

"Son of a bitch. They couldn't get to you so they got to your family? That is NOT Xia, man! Not Xia at all! If you have some kinda dispute with a guy take it up with him, not his relatives! Don't they have any sense of Chivalry!?"

"Maybe it was one of my dad's old enemies, he never talked much about his past...," you admit quietly.

"See, that's even worse! Letting some old grudge ruin your life and then taking it out on somebody else is the most in-Xia thing I can think of!" he says, slapping the table again.

I have to take a break for now, but shall continue later.

No, they don't have clans, is the point. They were just some guys who rose to become super powerful all on their own. Also, while the name Feng Renshu isn't familiar to me, Dugu would actually be super stoked for someone else to copy his style. His name means "the defeat-seeking vagabond", having someone who could match his skill and give him an actual challenge is his ream.

>His name means "the defeat-seeking vagabond", having someone who could match his skill and give him an actual challenge is his ream.

Sword Devil Dugu Qiubai's is one of the more ridiculously powerful wuxia in fiction; having been born, lived, and died all long before the events of Jin Yong's novels but having been so absurdly powerful that no less then THREE separate characters could learn just ONE of his skills and then become a nearly unbeatable warrior.

He's notable because his skill was so great it basically transcended conventional logic and sense. Expert swordsman can use parts of their body as a sword, but he was so good that anything and everything he touched or used was a sword; a blade of grass, a branch, some water he splashes at you, ANYTHING was his weapon.
>>
>>36395999
And now I know who Emiya reincarnated from.
>>
>>36395999
His name (Defeat-Seeking) comes from the fact that by the time he was 30 he was so powerful he literally could not be beaten.
His skill had become so godlike that none dared challenge him and he could find no more rivals or anyone willing to fight him.

His life as a xia now devoid of challanges this avoid of meaning, he succumbed to despair and vanished, highly suggested that he took his own life in the utter loneliness at the absolute peak of power he achieved.

Storm Rider's character Mo Ming (No-Name, or Nameless) is also pretty obviously inspired by him.

Able to go for one more post.

"So who is Greendilocks REALLY anyway?" Duan Lei asks, curious. "She doesn't talk like a burglar, and if she were a full-time thief with martial arts she'd probably be a lot more successful."

"She says she ran away from home to avoid marriage. She's from a rich family in the Sichuan Basin, probably lived somewhere in Chengdu that has Wulin connections or is a Wulin clan outright. She has male siblings or relatives close to her in age, probably more then one but I'm not 100% sure on that," you say, rolling off your deductions one by one.

"Bro, how do you figure all THAT?" he says, eyes wide.

"Her clothes are casual but still extremely find under the dirt. A poorer family wouldn't be able to afford casual travel clothing that fancy. She knew where Nine Village Valley was without me having to explain it to her; which means she's most likely from Sichuan because the region is so small amd without consequence that nowhere else in the Empire likely even knows it exists. This suggests not only is she local, but EDUCATED, further implicating her family's wealthy status. She talks to people like a princess and is used to getting fed when she's hungry which is why it's so easy to rile her up over food, but she also speaks to me in a familiar fashion that's aggressive, which suggests she has siblings. If she were a single child planned to be married off she'd likely have been isolated from men to protect her virginity and purity, making her shy around them when she is definitely not shy. This means she probably has brothers or male cousins close to her in age she's used to talking too anf probably arguing with. I admit the Wulin family thing is a guess on my part, but she admitted her hair and eyes are because her qi is heavily Aspected. Only a Wulin family would have the breeding program or the specialized deitary and medicinal resources or knowledge to cause that change in her body over time."

>>36398967
Duan Lei looks totally flabbergasted.

"HOW long ago did you say you met her?" he asks incredulous.

"A day and a half ago now. It sounds like a lot, but there's no context. I know she's probably from a rich family and that she knows kungfu. She practically told me all the rest by herself, though not directly."

"She made you sound like some kind of country bumpkin though,"

"Oh, I AM." you laugh. "But just because I don't know anything about the Wulin proper doesn't mean I'm stupid, just lacking in information and context. I couldn't have deduced the Wulin family thing without her having explained Aspected Qi to me either and deduced that just as normal qi takes years and years of effort to train, changing the body's natural equilibrium must take just as long and require special efforts like she said. That let me figure out she was from a Wulin clan of some kind."
>>
>>36399144
Okay, Sky is hardcore badass. And not just in a 'I'm going to punch them inna face!' way either.
>>
>>36399042
>>36399055
>>36399128
Sky goes to lengths to appear much dumber then he actually is. He can figure lots of things out on his own as long as you give him the information to do so, but the problem is he needs even MORE information to give the stuff context. All he really figured out is that she was rich and her family knew kungfu, which I'm guessing pretty much everyone here picked up on.
>>
>>36399233
Sky's areas of ignorance are this; important people, important groups, politics, the value of individual monetary units, and martial styles outside basic theory. All of this stuff is because of lack of exposure, not a lack of intelligence.
>>
>>36399279
In the end, Zhu'er's explaining her unusual coloring is what told him all this and the rest is just guesswork. If she'd lied and told him it was dyed or painted, he'd have nothing else to go on but her clothes and mannerisms.

"To really figure out who she IS I'd need to investigate every single Wulin household in Sichuan with a missing daughter. I'm guessing that doesn't narrow it down at all."

"Nnnnooot really. I mean, that girl who I was wooing whom I had to fight three guys for? Yeah, I found out she ran away from home because she didn't want to get married,"

"...maybe it's Zhu'er?"

"What? No. I'm just saying it happens a lot more then you think. All the time it seems like, honestly. I mean arranged marriages work when your spoiled girl is normal, but if you teach her kungfu then she can like, FLY away on her own if she doesn't like the idea. Now, if you saw her fight, THAT mighr help you narrow in on her identity."

"....actually no. I...don't really know anything outside of my core fighting style and I was never taught anything about how other schools styles work. I even told her that I knew what the Shaolin Sect was, and while that IS true it's not because Ba taught me; I heard about it because it's the most famous martial sect in the world through people in town. I know about the Wudang Sect too, but if I saw either of them fight I couldn't tell you the differences...," you admit, sulking a little.

You'd NEVER say this to Zhu'er, and honestly might not even to Duan Lei without the rice wine; you've admitted your complete ignorance of the world you're stepping into.

"Wudang Sect are Daoists and Shaolin Sect are Buddhists?" he says.

"Yeah I know that, but that still isn't helpful; I don't know the difference between Daoism and Buddhism," you say flatly.

"Your dad didn't teach you about the two biggest religions in the whole Empire?"

"He never taught me ANYTHING except how a xia is supposed to behave and how to fight. And from what Zhu'er's been saying even the former is less how they ACTUALLY ARE and more how they're supposed to act!" you say, admiting for the first time aloud just how frustrating your complete lack of non-specific teachings was.
>>
>>36399752
You can't figure out why your father left you so completeky ignorant of the world. In fact a lot of his teachings seem to you now to almost ENCOURAGE your isolation intellectually.

The White Saber of Hunan ponders. "Hm. What if I helped?"

"What?"

"I mean, this quest of yours is serious business, but it sounds like you don't know enough to really start looking. I'm not exactly a genius but I can give you the basics. Hell, there's gonna be a procession of guests later today coming to the city, it'll help you get your bearings anyway."

Duan of Hunan, please teach me your ways!

Unless of course Duan wants to be able to call in a favor later.

>"I guess it couldn't hurt...."
But, I owe you a favor.
>>
>>36399873
>"I guess it couldn't hurt...."

So what if we'd owe him a favor? One thing to keep in mind for Wuxia is that the web of friendships and rivals and loves and hatreds is inescapable. Trying only results in tragedy. So we get involved on our terms.

And right now, Sky getting his bearings as soon as possible is important. He's frighteningly intelligent, which means if we can get him the data, he'll figure out how to keep going.
>>
>>36399873
>>"I guess it couldn't hurt...."

This is our saber bro

He will be our new best friend or worst enemy. I don't know yet
>>
Also, I gotta say, more and more I'm beginning to suspect Sky's Sifu did in fact set him up to be the type of martial artist capable of copying, emulating, and even outright stealing other style's techniques and forms to fold into his own fighting style. It'd fit with how smart he is.

We'll see the truth when he fights some real Xia.

ALSO, important note. The spider tattoo is a clue, even if Sky didn't see her fight.

You think on it then nod as yet another processesion of weirdos walks in, this time a group of guys each in their own colored outfit and wearing what looks like stylized animal masks. They just walk upstairs though, must already have a room.

"Okay, I accept! I'm in your debt!" you say, bowing deeply after standing up.

"No, after today we're Sworn Brothers!" he says, giving you another toast, which you drink to happily!

"I've never had a brother!"

"Brothers you choose are often better then ones you're born with anyway," Lei confides.

"Meet me at the top of the tallest building on the block later Brother Sky! We'll watch the procession from there and in the meantime I'll go ask some friends I have about your Sifu, maybe we can find some leads! You should go make up with your girlfriend though, if you leave her pouting she'll be pissed later."

"Oh, she really ISN'T my girlfriend," you clarify, shaking your hands.

"Huh, no? Weird, I thought I heard her mumble something about 'being lucky you looked so nice with your shirt off' when I came over with the wine, so I kinda figured...,"

"What does that have to do with anything?" you say, shrugging in confusion.

"....you know what, I'll let somebody else touch that subject. Anyway, you should still-" he begins, but then you hear a sharp cry of dismay and fear from upstairs!
>>
>>36400471
That probably was Zhu'er being informed that there's no hot water available for a bath.
>>
>>36400471
>>36400571
Or her fiancée and goons attacking her to bring her back for marriage.
>>

Probably. Time for kung-fu fighting.
>>
>>36400636
eeyup, try to basic them first no need to tip our hand unless we need to.
>>
>>36400654
We'll have Zhu'er and Duan Lei on our side, too, so we hopefully won't need to. It's three against what, four to six guys at most, probably? We might be able to it with just external styles.
>>
>>36400571
Fuck. We need to break her sneaking habit. There's no reason for her to be upstairs if she was taking a bath.(So no I don't think its her.)
>>
>>36400471
There is zero hesitation.

You and your newly sworn brother bolt out of your seats and leap into action up the stairs as one, you drawing your sword and Lei taking out his own huge four-foot long saber!

You both kick down the door to the room where Zhu'er went to bathe, ready for battle with the unflinching valor of a Chivalrious xia responding to a cry of need!

"SKY, WAIT!" Zhu'er cries as you enter the room (wow, it IS well-furnished, they really give you a lot for your money here).

You pause as inches from your favs you see something impossibly fine and thin, like a thread or a single steel strand of wire....and see that they surround the room in all directions, like a spiderweb of razor-sharp filaments.

In the room stands the men you saw walk up; in the center is a man in red with a Cetipede mask, behind you a man in black with a Scorpion mask, to your right a man in green with a Snake mask, a man in white with a Lizard mask, and finally a...man standing on the ceiling in grey with a spider tattooed across his face. In his open hand you see the innumerable threads of this razor-web looped around his fingers.

Zhu'er crouches in one corner of the room, a series of loosely-tied sheets tied around herself in a hasty cover for modesty, holding what looks like throwing knives in her hands.

"Damn. So close," the Spider says.

"Let her go!" you shout, taking up a stance.

"Not a a chance kid. If you want her back you're going to have to face the FIVE DEADLY VENOMS!"

>To Be Continued....

Oh, shit. On the one hand, awesome, we get to fight the Five Deadly Venoms. Classic wuxia villains, this is going to be really cool. On the other hand, they're the Five Deadly Venoms, they didn't get that name for nothing. Fighting them is going to suck.

>>
>>36400873
Yes.
The Five Deadly Venoms are a mix of villains and anti-heroes who are the stars of what is perhaps one if the EARLIEST wuxia films to ever be ported into America.
However though these guys have the same title, they are not precisely the same individuals per say, nor have they all the same styles.
>>
>>36400944
I assumed so, since you replaced Toad with Spider. Shame. I would have liked to see how Toad's invincible defense stood up against lightning. Wait...did you replace him just so that you could be sure we wouldn't make the "You know what happens to a toad when it gets hit by lightning?" reference?
>>
>>36400944
Good to know. I have a feeling I need to make a list of wuxia films as this quest goes on.

It's Lu Bu, isn't it?

Whenever it's just one Romance of the Three Kingdoms character, it's always Lu Bu.
>>

Ha, no. Way too easy.
His personality isn't really suited to a peaceful setting anyway, he sort of lacks subtly even more then most xia do, and that is REALLY saying shit.

Cao Cao is like the Happy Fun Ball; you do not taunt Cao Cao.

Fun historical fact; the Chinese version of "Speak of the devil" comes from the warlord himself thanks to his rapid conquests and incredible success in warfare.

No, but I should since it sounds interesting.
It's a slightly higher level of fantasy then this particular wuxia genre however.
>>
>>36403504
The strongest basis for this story is probably one the Storm Riders manwha, as well as the modern settinh wuxia korean manwha THE BREAKER (which is highly entertaining and I would recommend it), as well as plenty of classic wuxia references.
>>
>>36403562
oh yeah. Breaker is awesome. I was getting breaker vibes too. I'll have to look up Storm Riders.

>>36403512
It's a subgenre of wuxia that calls itself xianxia. Very over the top and crazy awesome. There's also the Emperor's Sword manwha that's kinda like this.
>>
>>36403703
Oh shit I actually watched storm riders. Looked it up now and remembered the whole thing. Awesome movie. This quest gonna be Gus.

There's a comic book with a far more extensive story and an art style that pretty much every other wuxia manwha from Hong Kong copies thanks to it's fame.

I have a feeling that our forms will hinder more than help in the upcoming battle. Using yin yang rotation will take out one Venom if we're lucky, but that leaves us vulnerable to attacks from the others while fatigued. And Traversing the Instant Path will have all those wires slice us into all kinds of shapes.
So what do we do?
I'm for slicing the wires with our sword and defending Zhu'er and Duan while they go to work.

killing them might not be a good way to win her heart . . . just saying
>>
>>36414738
I agree we shouldn't kill them. Unless it's the only way
>>
>>36414738
>>36414836
Killers aren't well-liked in the Wulin, as Sage has mentioned. It's not like western fantasy where if you're enemies you do everything you can to kill the other guy. Hence, 'Rogue Galleries' are the norm.

There are benefits. Having some rivals on call you can team up with to defeat a greater evil is useful.
>>
>>36415290
actually what he said is that killing is normal and expected if you hate each other and have a legitimate fued going on.

But killing EVERYONE you fight isn't.

In this particular case, we have no fued against them, nor do we hate them. So there is no reason to kill them. We beat them, and hopefully they get stronger and fight us again so we can keep earning XP for them fight them again to continue challenging ourselves to improve
>>
>>36416035
No, it isn't normal. Not killing is the norm, feuds ending in death are the exception.

It's kind of a funny thing about Wuxia: It has all these cultural norms and traditions and stuff, and yet it also often uses those norms and traditions being broken from to up the drama and tension.

It's a little hard to get into, 'cause it looks like comic books at first off, even though it isn't. The genre is very purposefully melodramatic.
>>
>>36416362
>No, it isn't normal. Not killing is the norm, feuds ending in death are the exception.
Learn to read

>>36415290
>if you hate each other and have a legitimate fued going on.
The vast majority of fights, you do not hate your opponent, nor do you have a legitimate feud going on.
>>
>>36416452
>This abnormal thing is normal in abnormal situations.

If you're going to say something, actually say something, man.
>>
>>36416466
I did say it. you failed at reading comprehension

>>36416362
>feuds ending in death are the exception.
i missed the first time around, but its worth noting that feud =! fought once
the vast majority of wuxia challenges do not involve any feuding at all.
A feud is a pretty serious thing that can easily escalate into a blood feud.
>>
>>36416362
>No, it isn't normal. Not killing is the norm, feuds ending in death are the exception.

Really, the reason hated enemies aren't killing each other all the time in say, Jin Yong's novels tends to largely be because of plot contrivances.

Often Jin Yong's heroes will be extremely idealistic or even outright stupid in at least once case, and thus very forgiving, but when pushed too far and they attempt to kill their foe a lot of stuff happens to stop them from doing so; previously attained injuries acting up (he loves that one), they escape and the hero doesn't bother chasing them because they just found their lost love interest (whom they will separate from due to MORE contrivances later on of course), or in a couple of cases they literally will just go "meh, I'll do something else" and drop it. In other wuxia stories vendettas are often slightly less forgiving, and in fact can turn pretty bloody.

As a character Sky is kinda somewhere in between a number of these characteristics.
