You are Reinhold, master swordsman and victor of the Royal Swordsmanship Tournament. The King was so impressed with your skill, he personally requested that you be transferred out of the army and into the Royal Guard! Not bad for an orphan who was raised in a brothel in a poor fishing village.

The only issue at this point is your assignment... you've been charged to be the personal guard of the King's only daughter Marianne. While she is the vision of loveliness that you'd expect from a Princess, her personality is... well... she seems to have some issues.

It's been one drawback after another... you thought that today would be a fun trip out to the lake with your friends, but first you found out that Marianne is too sick to even leave her room, and then you found out that those Leviathans that you'd been hearing about have just attacked the [port at Cateno.

And of course Citrine would be right within earshot when Arnaud told you about this...

>Congratulations, Reinhold is now a fearsome DIRE WOLF!
>Much larger than their the other types of wolf, the Dire Wolf's size also means that they are also that much more dangerous.
>The Princess considers you to be her dear friend!
>But while dire wolves are massive, they still don't -quite- stand on the same level as people.

>"I wish that I was strong like Reinhold and his friends," Citrine growls. "If I could use magic like them, I'd fly over there and kill all those damned things myself, the stupid f-" she stops herself and takes a deep breath.
>"Citrine?" you rub her back in hopes of calming her down.
>"I'll be fine," she shakes her head. "Just remembering how much I hate horrible monsters, that's all."
>"Hmm..." Arnaud stroke his beard for a few moments. "...Reinhold, perhaps you could come with me to help clear them out?" he asks. "Pick off any stragglers, help get the citizens to safety, that kind of thing."
>"Eh?" Citrine stares at him. "Reinhold?" she points at you.
>"Yes, I believe that he's trained enough to be more than able to fend off a few lesser dragons," he shrugs, "and this might be a good opportunity to get revenge for whatever grudge your sister has for them."

Revenge...

"Hey," you turn to Arnaud. "how long can those sea serpents live for?"
"I've heard stories about them living for hundreds of years," Arnaud replies.
"And they usually stick to one area, right?"
"Yes, under normal circumstances," he says, shrugging. "Why do you ask?"
"Well that means that there's a decent chance that the ones that are attacking Cateno right now are the same ones that sunk Citrine's boat way back when," you say as a feeling that you haven't known in quite some time begins to well up from within you.
"Reinhold..." Citrine hugs onto your arm even tighter than she had already been. "...you don't have to go out there because of me-"
"No," you shake your head. "You remember what I said I'd do to anyone or anyTHING that hurts you, right?"
"Y- yeah," she nods, "but these are sea serpents, and..."

It kills you to see Citrine this worried about you, but you made your mind up about this kind of situation a long time ago. Back then you weren't even ten years old when you killed that stupid bastard who beat her up, and then did the same to the next fool who thought to raise a hand to your sister. And even though these are Leviathans that you're talking about this time around, that doesn't matter. You weren't afraid when you were a little boy taking on grown men twice your size, and you're not afraid now.

"It's okay," you say, turning to Citrine. "Arnaud wouldn't have suggested that I come along if he wasn't confident that I'd be able to help."
"Y... yes," Luciana places a hand on her shoulder. "Uncle Guillaume is every bit as cautious as my father is, he'd never put Reinhold in a situation in which he couldn't handle himself."

Though Luciana looks every bit as worried about you as Citrine is, she's actually supporting your going out there?

"...you're okay with me doing this?" you say, turning to her.
"I'd be lying if I said that I wouldn't rather have you come to the lake with the rest of us, but I also understand that there are things that one needs to do regardless of the wishes of others," Luciana replies. "So as long as Uncle Guillaume promises to bring you back in one piece, I'm fine with it."
"I certainly will," Arnaud replies.
"There's no reasoning with you when you get like this, anyways," Citrine says, shaking her head. "And at least you're not sneaking out in the middle of the night to do it this time..." she sighs.

Luciana seems pretty surprised to hear that little remark.

"'This time?'" she asks.
"Yeah, but we don't need to go into details about that," Citrine replies with a nervous smile. "Bad memories, that's all."
"Hmm..."

"I guess I ought to go tell Marianne about this," you say with a weary sigh. While you're hesitant to go and bother yet AGAIN, you're also pretty sure that she'd be even angrier with you if you went out to risk your life without saying a word of it to her.
"Yes, that probably would be a good idea," Luciana nods.
"Well I suppose that I'll go finish up our preparations to leave," Arnaud says. "Reinhold, meet me out here when you're ready to leave."
"Will do," you reply.

With that out of the way, you slide free of Citrine's hold, then place a hand on either of her shoulders.

"Sorry that this trip turned out to be a total bust," you say to her. "I'll have to make it up to you later."

"I suggest you go upstairs and tell Marianne before you forget to," Luciana says, pushing you away. "Uncle Guillaume's already left, and I'm sure you don't want to hold him up."
"...oh yeah," you nod. "See you later?"
"That's good enough of a goodbye for me," she replies, smiling at you.

And so, you give your girlfriend a quick peck on the cheek and then hurry off to the stairs.

It definitely seems like you've been running up and down the stairs today... and as you finally exit the stairwell and step out into the hallway where your and Marianne's rooms lie, you stop just short of having Melanie crash into you.

Again.

"...oh, Reinhold," Melanie sighs. "I take it that you forgot something in your room?" she asks. "I just got finished making your bed, and I noticed that you left some drawing materials on your desk..."
"No, that's not it," you shake your head. "I came back up here to tell Marianne something."

Sorry, Melon. This is something we owe it to her to say ourselves, whether or not she's going to find it bothersome.

"Yeah, he called off the totally peaceful picnic in order to go off and take revenge on some sea serpents instead." is exactly the kind of news you don't have a third party pass along like it's as ultimately inconsequential as who's bringing up breakfast.

>>36439432

>>
>>36439622
Well it's obvious that it will make her condition ever worse, so there is that. Personally I'm against going to either the lake or to fight the sea serpents since it feels like trouble is inbound. The die is cast though so we should at least make the effort to let her know we're heading out. We should definitely find Gregory/Karel though, for professional reasons as well as personal.
>>
>>36439664
Given that Arnaud is in a hurry, I'm not sure if we have the time to go see more than one person.
>>
"Well I'm about to go to Cateno instead of the lake trip, and I thought that I ought to tell Marianne what I'm doing before I leave," you say. "You know, just in case something happens."
"Wha..." Melanie stares at you, her mouth agape. "Cateno!? Why the hell would you EVER decide to go to a place like that!? It's bad enough that the Princess can't come, how do you think that Nicolette and the others will take it when they find out that you decided to skip out on our trip just so that you could do THERE of all places!?"

From that reaction, it looks like Melanie knows about your hometown's reputation all too well. Not that you can blame her, of course.

"L... Leviathans?" Melanie gasps. "So it's for-" she takes a deep breath. "And Mr. Arnaud actually asked you to do this?"
"Yeah," you nod. "I'd be lying if I said that it wasn't personal, but still..."
"No, it's okay," she shakes her head. "That's definitely a good enough reason to tell the Princess what you'll be doing..."

With a disappointed sigh, Melanie turns around and motions for you to follow her to Marianne's room. You stop at the doorway like always while Melanie hurries inside to tell the Princess the bad news.

"WHAT!?" you hear Marianne's hoarse voice scream and then break down into a long round of coughing.
"Princess, please calm down!" Melanie shouts.

Just as you're about to go in there yourself to make sure that Marianne's okay, both she and Melanie approach the door. Her miserable countenance is a total mismatch from the fancy pajamas that she's wearing, with bags under her eyes and a red nose from blowing it so much. You honestly can't blame her for not wanting you to see her like this, it's a FAR cry from her usual polished appearance.

"You..." Marianne chokes out. "You're actually going out there?" she asks.
"Yeah," you nod.
"I'm sure that Arnaud will take care of you," she coughs, "but you don't have any obligation to go back to that place. Even though it's in danger, I'm sure that Arnaud can take care of it himself, you know?"

Propose to Luciana? That's just silly, you're nowhere near ready to do anything like that. Not to mention that you're not sure how things like that are supposed to work when you're dating a Princess... just loving one another isn't enough, you're sure that you'd have to run it by her father first and all that.

But now's not the time to worry about that stuff, you have more important things to take care of right now.

Citrine left the whorehouse and got married around 3 years ago, she met Marius about a year after Reinhold joined the military.

So there's a three year window where the Boss and/or Spinelle could've died without us knowing.

Every minute that you waste here is one minute that those monsters over in Cateno have to kill people. With this in mind, you decide not to go and find Karel, instead heading straight for the castle gate in order to meet up with Arnaud.

When you finally make it there, you see that Luciana, Takamaru and Citrine are still waiting by the gate... but Arnaud's nowhere in sight.

Reinhold's raping the baker's wife, and he accidentally comes in the batter. Surprisingly, this cake is really popular among the female cast! They can't get enough, so the baker's wife has to keep fucking Reinhold for the success of her husband's business.

Better to rush and leave a good friend in the lurch than spend one minute explaining things so that one of the most important events of their life can completely fuck up without you being there to help them through it. An event that Reinhold forced upon her no less. What their room is right across the hall? Nope can't spare a single second, gotta go protect the hive of scum and villainy even though preparation for the departure will probably take a little while longer.
>>
Was it ever mentioned how long Reinhold was in the army prior to his current position, or if he has any friends from his army days?

I find it hard to believe that Reinhold doesn't have any friends from the army with the way he's been making friends with literally everyone.

>>
>>36441415
What would we say?

What was the point in going to see Karel?
>>
"Hey, I'm back," you say, waving to them as you approach.
"Well I guess this is it," Citrine says, frowning.
Uncle Guillaume went out to get something since I guess the travel arrangements changed thanks to you coming along," Luciana says. "I don't think it'll be too long now, though."
"Oh, alright," you nod.

You spend the next ten minutes or so keeping the girls company. It seems that Citrine's feeling so down that she was considering going back home, but Luciana promised her that she'd keep her company while they're at the lake. It's pretty surprising how well they appear to be getting along.

...on second thought, Citrine's the nicest, most wonderful person who you know so of course she'd get along with Luciana. And knowing her, she'll probably regale Luciana with inappropriate stories or the like.

Tell her not to freak out. Let her know that the castle's defenses are going to be lighter than normal and to be on guard just in case. "Eh?"

You look up in the skies outside the castle gate... at first you don't see anything aside from the occasional bird, but soon you spot something else approaching the castle.

"...is that a dragon!?" you stammer as you point outside.
"Huh?" Citrine looks outside. "I think that's a wyvern?"

The guards don't seem to be on alert at all as the light green reptile flies closer and closer to the castle. Its spindly body doesn't make it look particularly threatening, but its wingspan is most definitely impressive. Though nobody else seems to be alarmed, you place a hand on the pommel of your sword as the wyvern(?) gracefully lands outside the castle's gate...

...and Arnaud hops down from its back.

"Reinhold!" Arnaud calls out as he jogs over to where you and the others are standing. "Sorry for taking so long, it was kind of a pain to rent out one of these things on such short notice," he laughs. "I was simply going to run there before, but I don't think that would be too good an idea with you coming along and all."
"Uh..." you stare at Arnaud. And then the wyvern that's waiting patently outside the castle. "we're going to be riding that to Cateno?" you ask.
"There's too much risk of the Leviathans spooking it so we won't be able to ride it into the village itself, but yes," he nods.

You didn't even consider that you'd be riding a WYVERN there of all things...

"So, are you ready to go?" Arnaud asks. "We should be there within fifteen minutes as long as you're able to handle flying at top speed..."

Wyverns are a pain and a half to raise, and the government doesn't actually own any outright. And while it's always within their rights to commandeer them outright, it's not exactly a good look to be doing so so they get rented out in times of emergencies like this.

>>
>>36441732
>Are all dragons tamed or are some breeds domesticated?
Lindwurms have several domesticated and wild breeds.
Wyverns can be tamed, but are not domesticated.
Salamanders and Leviathans are not tameable by any reasonable means. The best one can do is raise them from an egg (which is what they do with wyverns), but even that's a crapshoot.

And that's it for the four types of lesser dragons.
>>

Found it:

>Lesser dragons come in a few varieties:

>Lindwurms, commonly called Behemoths. Large wingless dragons what generaly muck about and fuck things up. Some varieties have been domesticated, and they get used to pull plows and carts, ate up as livestock, and various other things.

>Wyverns, which have wings in the place of their front limbs. It's possible to train them to fly people around, though it's hard as fuck to do and thus their services are expensive.

>Leviathans, which are your sea serpents that exist as terrors of the deep. Nobody wants anything to do with them.

>Salamanders, which have arms and legs and wings and breathe fire and are dangerous as fuck.

"Yeah, I just need to say goodbye first," you say.

"You know you agree with me," he says, winking at his goddaughter. "But anyways, I'll meet you out by the Wyvern, Reinhold. See you later, Luciana."
"Goodbye, Uncle Guillaume," Luciana replies.

As the butler walks away, you turn to the two people who you love the most... or to be more exact, the only two people in the world who you can say that you love.

"Reinhold..." Citrine looks at you while struggling to hold back the tears.

Once Citrine's hugged for long enough, she lets go of you and pushes you towards Luciana.

"You know what to do," Citrine says with a melancholic smile.
"Yeah, yeah..." you sigh.

After letting out as long sigh, you look your girlfriend right in her beautiful green eyes.

"Well, uh..." you smile weakly, "I'll be seeing you later."
"Yes, you will," Luciana replies. "I'm sure that Marianne already let you have it about doing anything stupid while you're gone, so just imagine that I've said all of those things as well... except twice as loud."
"Got it," you laugh.

And having gotten all of your awkward goodbyes court of the way, you lean in and kiss her. As you pull away, you notice that she's crying...

"Luciana?" you reach towards her, but she turns away from you.
"Don't worry about me," Luciana says, shaking her head.

That guilty feeling in the pit of your stomach feels like it's just doubled in size.

"Takamaru?" you turn to the stoic easterner, "Keep Luciana safe for me while I'm gone."
"That goes without saying," Takamaru replies.

And with a final wave goodbye, you walk away from them and head outside the castle gates to the waiting Wyvern.
