Captain's Log.
Stardate: Out of time.

The nebula has not been kind, and with the unprepared state our ship is in, this may be my last log. I hope somebody's been receiving these. I was told writing these on paper and tossing them out the airlock was a bad way to tell our tale, but it works in the movies. I am Tom Hinderson, captain of the Skyship Crutch4, Federation captain. We carry with us a dossier with information on the Rebel's Flagship; the key to their military strategy. If we can get this to Federation Command, we'll win this war. If not, I we won't live to see if we win or lose, because the only way this stack of papers is leaving this ship is when it's extracted from my bowels, because presumably I'll eat them in front my killer just to spite him.

The ship has been handling well, until we began reaching the more advanced, more densely-populated sectors of space we're entering now. In this quarter, a great Nebula controlled by the Slug trade empire, we were blown to the brink of death. Our shield manager and Zoltan envoy, Hippy McHippy, was killed in a fistfight with pirates while trying desperately to put out fires onboard. Morale is low, supplies are running short, and we have next-to-no scrap to upgrade or repair the ship. The remaining crew includes the Buy-One-Get-One droids that came with this ship, Dr. Mr. Derek, former prostitute and current heavily-armed Slugman, and Nikolai, Engi Engineer. We'll have to hope our shields can last whatever barrages are thrown at us, and that our weaponry will be able to pierce the hulls of the surely well equipped ships we'll come across.

As we near Federation Command, the zones tend to become more populated, if not always more civilized. Sitting in the Long-Range Jump Ring, we can reach two sectors; the Engi homeworlds, and the Mantis homeworlds. It's clear now why these two civilizations have always been at war; they're fucking neighbors. Who was stupid enough to not, say, move? I thought these Engi guys were supposed to be smart.
>>

Engi worlds should be marginally less killy.

We pick the safer route, and head to the Engi homeworlds. We're piloting an Engi ship, and we have an Engi Engineer. Maybe we'll be treated with a bit of kindness for once!
Or maybe Nikolai can just say hey to his mother-factory, who knows. We have an array of options to choose from, and, we're receiving a faint distress signal from the SpaceSoutheast!
>>
>>36455154
Well, it did say "friendly space" so we could help... Then again, Engis with Engine trouble is kinda farfetched... I say go SpaceSoutheast

We head to the SpaceSoutheastern beacon, wary for traps. And... it's not! It's actually a Mantis ship, out of fuel and food. We share with them what little we can spare, and they proclaim shock that anyone with an Engi crew would assist them. In the Mantis homeworlds, they're told that Engi are remorseless, thoughtless machines who only kill out of spite. They promise to head to the Mantis homeworlds, and spread the word that they'd been misled by their government! This war will end, and it's all thanks to us! As we wave them away, they're blown the fuck up by a pirate ship just jumping in.
EVERY time.

We power up the weapons, and charge the shields! But a victory against a well-armed target will require much more that just firing away wildly. We have to pick and choose our shots, take stock of our situation, balance out power for accuracy, speed for defense! And all that nonsense. So, we obviously must kill them, but /how/ do we kill them?
We're equipped with an upgraded Ion Blaster, capable of temporarily stunning a system, de-powering it. This attack stacks with itself, multiple shots means more time disabled. We have a Hull Laser, which is exactly what it sounds like, and a Flak Cannon, which fires out trash to batter the enemy. Derek, being a telekinetic Slugman, can also temporarily mind-control an enemy every once in a while, even across the void of space!
The enemy appears to have a fuckhuge missile, some kind of beam weapon, and an itty-bitty laser machine gun. And some kind of hacking thing, which is flying right towards us.

We begin to charge the weapons, but suddenly, a loud burst of static comes from the Weapon Control Bay! Nothing can be made out through the fired mic and speaker, but it's clear what's happened; the weapons have been hacked, and are powering down! And one of the Droids is trapped inside!
Fuck!
I have no idea how to deal with this!
>>
>>36455694

There's a brief break in power flow to the hacking bot; perhaps they were shuffling more energy to the engines, or something. Whatever caused it, it's more than enough time to charge and fire a few volleys; first into the hacking device itself, and then, right up their ship's ass. Derek mind controls their Zoltan captain, and forces him to bomb his own quarters, using his own energy-driven body as the ignition source.
Their remaining crewmember comes on-screen, bleeding badly. He begs for mercy.
>>
>>36455834
We will not accept surrender. try to kill him and keep the ship intact.

Also let him know that they killed people who could have ended the mantis/Engi wars.
>>

Hacking is worse than murder. Our collective browser histories are now know to that survivor. You know we can't let him live, lest it comes out that Big Boned Boning Burly Brawlers 8 has been watched 9834 times by the crew.

We try to simply kill the remaining crewmember; Derek even mind-controls him, hoping we could drive him to suicide. And we do, in a way; rather than blasting his own head off, he chooses to destroy the apparently-weakened cockpit, and the rest of the ship by extension.
We make sure to run a magnet over their ship's hard drives.
No reason.

Nikolai steps in, and asks what all the hub-ub is about. After assurances that their conversation won't be recorded and shared, they tell us that a pair of experimental Engi ships have been stolen by Mantis, wearing Rebel coats on their warships to boot! It's clear that if the Rebels can copy their tech they'll be yet another step ahead of the Federation, but the Engi lack proper battle ships to chase after them. We focus all fire on their weapon systems, and unleash the drone. The crew knows their lives are on the line, and work as best they are physically capable. Our shields take their Ion blasts, keeping the important components safe. When they board us, and of course they did, Derek is ready to manipulate one into attacking the other, both distracted as air floods out of the room. They suffocate and die in minutes. As C3P3 works away in the weapons bay, he does exactly as programmed; aim, fire, reload, breath, aim, fire, reload. Over and over, and few shots miss thanks to his careful aim. But their shields are too powerful, and their weapons have some kind of heavy armor; they just refuse to go down, no matter how many shots are pumped into them. Their small missile pod fires, and hits; a direct shot to the cargo bay. No systems damaged, but the already-weakened hull lets out an audible groan, stressed beyond specifications and then some. Noone loses focus; they can't afford to. Shot after shot from the flak cannon goes out, and finally, their weaponry comes down, just a little!
Just enough to depower their Ion cannon, leaving their missiles up and running.

Their large and small pods fire on tandem, and the shots converge on the helm. They have impeccable aim.

Captain Hinderson is immediately torn from the Captain's Chair, flung out the hole made in the hull by explosive decompression. Luckily, he does not strike anything on the way out; it's a clean toss. He's fine, except for being in the Void with no suit.
He watches the battle rage as his vision darkens. The Engi ships were unprepared for this battle; they're going down one by one. Missile after missile comes from the Bombers, penetrating any defenses held, destroying the allied ships. The Engi, and by extension the Federation, will lose this fight.

It takes about thirty seconds to die, exposed to the Void without a suit.
And during those thirty seconds, Hinderson's oxygen-deprived mind can only contain one coherent thought.

Cpt Hinderson went on the be incorrectly memorialized in the now-popular cartoon dramadey "Misadventures of Cpt Hendershin."

Nikolai, and his beloved engine, were never recovered. The gunner in charge of firing on The Crutch4 was put on medical leave, for "Mental trauma."

The Droids were eventually picked up by the Rebels, after they won the battle. They were scrapped and turned into attack drones.

Dr. Mr. Derek was a man of many hats, but he did not have a space helmet. He suffocated in space, and was eventually cremated and set to drift in the nebula of the Slug homeworlds.

Hippy McHippy wasn't important.

Thanks for playing, everyone! This has been really, really fun, actually. More so than I anticipated. I'll certainly be doing this again, at some point, later. But the biggest problem with doing this is that FTL doesn't have multiple save slots, so I couldn't play while this went on. And I'm a greedy bastard, and I love this game, so I'll be playing this.
I will return! Probably with Captain's Edition!

But, again, thank you for playing. You're all lovely people.
