/tg/ - Traditional Games

Previous Thread: http://suptg.thisisnotatrueending.com/archive/36438757/

A month has passed since you first started college and things are starting to get rough. Your swordplay class is relentless. You're not understanding the Light cantrip you've been working on. And exams are in two weeks.
On top of it all, you've been seeing Miranda less and less. She comes back to the dorm room late at night, always intoxicated but she doesn't smell of alcohol. She's starting to look unhealthy, and she's been hitting you up for money.
At first, you thought it was just for new sheet music or for the occasional bottle of good wine she'd bring home. But something's different about her. She changed. She always looks tired, and she's lost a lot of weight. She's doing worse at her fencing, too, and you never see her studying anymore.
Whenever you do go out and find her late at night, she's at that underground club, the 16th Note.

You wake up. Miranda is in bed next to you. The two of your beds have been pushed together. She's still asleep, but classes are starting soon.
How do you want to start your day, bard in training?
>>
The Rules:
Generally, the most popular option suggested by the people of /tg/ will win for the action taken or words spoken. However, occasionally dice rolls may be used.

Please be respectful of your fellow players and the GM. Don't be that guy.

Pop culture references are allowed, but an over-abundance of them will likely result in a lackluster experience.

The dice rolls will use the AD&D method. If attacking, roll high. If rolling percentage or a skill, roll low. The majority of rolls will be made with d20.

Oh, and the official quest twitter is @CitizenCFKane if you're interested in that.

You shake Miranda awake.
"Ugh... 5 more minutes."
"Classes start in less than 20 minutes. We've got no time."
"Then I'll skip."
"Come on, Miranda, you've already skipped our swordplay class three times. Two more and it's an automatic fail."
"Ugh, fine."
Miranda gets up and lazily puts on her clothes. She doesn't bother putting her hair up.
"After class tonight, do you want to go to the club with me?"

Do you, freshman?
>>
>>36457965
Say yes the when she comes to the dorm give her an intervention its clear she needs one

"Yeah, sure. I'll meet you here after classes."
"Alright." She kisses you on the cheek and the two of you head to your swordplay class.

Professor Miyazaki is all dressed when you get there, in his protective gear. You still haven't seen what his face looks like.
"Class, I'd like to make a special announcement." You and Miranda just got there as he started talking. As he talks, you two get into your protective gear. "There is going to be a swordplay tournament held here in two weeks, just after the exams. The winner will receive this."
Above his usual wooden sword on his belt, he holds up something that looks quite like it. It's some kind of sword in a wooden scabbard, all black with strange characters written on it. The sheath is wrapped in some kind of cloth, and there's a metal bottom point. "It is the sword most popular in the land I come from. I know here in Greyhawk these are rare. The winner of the tournament will receive this sword and specialized training under me for the next semester, counting as a swordplay credit. Anyone who would like to sign up may do so now, before we begin practice."
Miranda immediately sings up. Do you go for it, freshman?
>>
>>36458276
Of course.
>>
>>36458302

The choice seems obvious. You're still famous for beating the captain of the fencing team, and even if that was a fluke you've improved a lot. You sign up for that tournament. Even if that sword is nothing like your longsword, it's always good to keep your options open.

"Today, class," Professor Miyazaki says, "We're going to practice advancing, knowing when to enter combat when your opponent is off-guard. I will demonstrate with a student. Miranda Caswyn?"
Miranda steps up onto the fencing stage and takes out her rapier. The professor draws his wooden sword. Immediately, the professor rushes at her and hits her on the head with the wooden blade.
"She held her sword low, and her head was open. The only moment your sword should be in a non-defensive arrangement is when you're striking. Again!" Miranda holds her rapier higher, taking a side stance. You can see her shaking a bit with the blade. The professor knocks her blade with his wooden sword and it goes flying out of her hand, hitting the stage floor. He follows it with a slash to her neck. "When your grip is flimsy, the sword will always fly out of your hand!"
Professor Miyazaki turns to the class. "I want you all to start three paces from each other today. Advance the second that you see an opening and strike. Remember to take advantage of any weakness you see."

It's time to pair up. Do you pair up with Miranda again, or look for someone else?
>>
>>36458480
Is Miranda's friend Assandra in this class? Pair up with her, if she is.

Maybe we can talk to her about the proposed intervention while we spar.
>>
>>36458548
agreed
>>
>>36458480
Find anyone else, we need to pracitce with the best in order to beat the best.
>>
>>36458548
>>36458584

Assandra is in the class. You go to her.
"Hey, wanna partner up? I wanted to talk to you."
"Fine, but don't blame me when you get your butt kicked."
You start sparring with Assandra. You can't see an opening on her, but she sure sees them on you.
"I wanted to talk to you about Miranda."
"Yeah? What about her?" She swipes for your body and you parry.
"She's been out of it lately. And she keeps going to this underground club. I don't know what she's up to, but it's no good."
"What do you want to do?" There's where she keeps herself open.
"I was hoping you'd meet me in the dorms and the two of us could talk to her and figure out what's going on."
"Sounds good to me." When she attacks, she leaves herself open for a short amount of time. You capitalize on that; when she comes at you, you execute a hit to her wrist.
After a while, your talk goes into witty banter mode. It appears that Assandra isn't just a good swordfighter, she's also a vicious mocker. As a result, you lose your edge and take most of the hits. You'd better get that together if you want to win that tournament.

Your next class goes well. In music theory you learn how to switch from key to key and make it sound good, and in your personal training with the mandolin you learn a lot from Professor Roth.
"Something seems to be troubling you, Buddy."
"Yeah, well..."

Do you want to get your friend, Professor Roth involved?
>>
>>36458704
Yeah, tell him what's up. He might have some sage advice.
>>
>>36458704
Yes and maybe we can get him to help us with the intervention
>>
>>36458704
Get advice, no names, just ask how to deal with a suspected alcoholic.

"My girlfriend's in with a bad crowd. She keeps going to this club on campus and it's doing something to her health."
"A club on campus? What is it?"
"It's a nightclub where they play this jass music."
"I don't know anything about a club on campus. Is it supported by school funds?"
"No. It's under the school of magic, called the 16th Note. You need a password to get in. Last time I was there, it was Newt in the Bottle, but it may have changed since I was there last time."
"Did anything strange happen there?"
"Besides the music? Well..."

Do you tell him about the guy who offered you the drugs?
>>
>>36458827
Might as well. You've already spilled most of the beans.

"Yeah, there was this guy there who offered us some of these weird white circular things."
"Did your girlfriend take it?"
"I'm not sure. I think she might have."
"Poppy's Soul. I know that stuff. It's no good. You try it once and you're hooked, and it ruins your body and your mind."
You didn't think it was that serious, but given the way Miranda's been acting, it sounds accurate.
"Is there anything I can do to help her?"
"You've got to keep her away from that place, however you have to. I'm sure that's where she's getting it from. Something like that shouldn't exist at all, much less on a college campus. I'm going to bring this club up in my next meeting with the dean of the school of magic, it's tomorrow. In the mean time, make sure she doesn't go there. That stuff is serious, and it can kill her."
You didn't think it was that bad, but everything has its price.
"Thanks, professor."
"Now, you're going to be late for your next class if you don't head out."
"Alright. See you."
"And Buddy, your parents would be proud of you. You remember that."
You head off to your Wilderness Survival class.

Nice rolls.

You spend the class learning all about what you can and can't eat while in a forest.
You never knew there were so many poisonous berries around. Or how to set up a makeshift cooking area and make a forest stew.
You also cover a little bit on skinning rabbits. Rabbit fur can be useful for retaining heat and even making very light armor.
Plus, the meat is good for your stew.
After the class, it's time for you to go back to the dorm. When you show up, Assandra is waiting there.
"Hi Buddy."
"Hi Assandra."
"Do you have a plan for this?"
You hadn't really thought it out. What's your course of action?

"Let's not be too judgmental. Let's just show her we care about her."
The two of you go up to the dorm room. Miranda's there, all dressed up. Her clothes look too big on her.
"Buddy! And Assandra. Hey, are you ready to go? Is Assandra coming with?"
"Uh, can we talk to you for a second."
"What about?"
"Well, you don't stay in and make music with me anymore. What's up?"
"Well, you know, I've been busy. Classes and everything."
"But you're going to that club every night now. Are you okay?"
"Yeah, I'm fine. I just want to have fun once in a while. You know how stressful classes can be."
"But every night, Miranda? We're both worried about you. You're hanging out with a bad crowd."
"So now you think you're better than me? You think you can just come in here and lecture me?"
>>
>>36459287
"It's not like that... I love you."

"Miranda, it's not like that. I love you."
"And that means you can boss me around? Why are you doing this to me, Buddy?"
"I care about you."
"Miranda, stop it," Assandra says. "Can't you see he's only talking like this to you because he's worried that you might be in danger?"
"I-I -- leave me alone!" Miranda shouts and then runs out of the room.
Well, shit. You have a feeling that you know where she's going.
"Should we go after her, Buddy?" Assandra asks you.

You tighten your belt with your longsword attached and the two of you head out, straight to the school of magic. You knock on the out of place brick.
"Password?" The voice comes from the wall.
"Newt in the Bottle." You respond.
"That's last month's password. What's the current password?"

You have absolutely no idea. You look at Assandra. She doesn't have any ideas.

"A professor. He's a friend of mine."
"A professor? Do you have any idea how much trouble Miranda could get in?"
"I know, but it's our only hope. He'd easily be able to get in there."
"Fine. Let's find him."

You go to the music building and check the lecture halls. He isn't there. So, you check his office and find him just as he's about to leave.
"Buddy, I wasn't expecting you. What's up?"
"It's important. I need your help."
"What happened?"
"My girlfriend ran off to the club. We need to get her out of there. There's a password on the door, but it's a magic doorway. There's no way for us to get past it. Can you help?"
The professor sighs. "I guess I could do that much, but if we're doing this, we need to do it officially. I can't risk my job over this. Are you okay with that?"
>>
>>36459676
"I was afraid you'd say that... Alright."
>>
>>36459713
"Alright. I was afraid you would say that, but alright."
"Then I have to call in a favor."
Professor Roth grabs a gavel sitting on his desk and smacks a gong sitting in the corner of the room. Three men in full black armor appear in the room in a puff of smoke.
"Security," he says, "We have a problem in the school of magic. There is an illegal underground drug ring which I have recently been informed about. We're going to go there and shut it down for good."
"Sir," one of the men in black armor say, "You realize this gives us permission to use deadly force if necessary."
"Yes, I do."
"Deadly force?" You ask the professor.
"It shouldn't come to that. Go in, get your girlfriend, and get out as fast as possible."

The six of you head over to the school of magic. Professor Roth takes out a scroll and slams it onto the place where the door should be, then reads from it. The archway appears and you all go down.
"Campus security!" One of the security officers yells out when you enter the tavern. You don't see Miranda in the main room, but she may be in the side room. "Drop your weapons or face expulsion or death!"

What do you do?
>>
>>36459801
Do as he says.

He reaches into his jacket and produces a dagger. "But you shouldn't have. What, you thought you would play hero? You thought you would come in here and save your little precious flower?"
He pushes you up against a wall. "She was a decent girl. She hasn't let any of us touch her. But now I'm going to take that away from her. And you. And you're going to lay here and bleed and watch as I tear every bit of innocence from her."
He pushes the dagger into your gut. "And the last thing that's going to go through your head is that you failed."

You guys have no idea how lucky you were to get that 10. I've set your con at literally 15.

The world is spinning around you. Things start going dark. But this is no time to give up.
You struggle and stand up, drawing your longsword. He's almost finished disrobing her by the time you have. Blood is leaking from your open wound.
This guy isn't very strong looking. It shouldn't be too hard to take him down. He got lucky with a lucky shot. But that doesn't mean he's better than you.
And you won't let him do what he's planning on doing.
"Oh, so you're back up now? The big hero is ready to fight to the death to save his little princess?"
"Shut up and fight, asshole. We're shutting down this entire establishment. You aren't going to win this."
"Do you have any idea who I am? Do you have any idea what will happen to you if you hurt me? What will happen to your family?"
"My family is dead."

Wow, you guys just barely met that unarmored AC. Bad rolls tonight, huh?

You feel a sharp pain in your gut, but you lunge forward. The man in black parries your hit and kicks you to the floor, right on your wound.
"This ends it, kid. I was going to keep you alive to watch, but now I'm just going to kill you."
He puts his foot on your chest and leans down. "The Alchemist's Grove takes another victim." He leans down to cut your throat. Suddenly, he's forced back. Twenty magic missiles just hit him in the chest at once. He's on the floor with a gaping hole in his chest, ghasping for air.
Professor Roth stands in the doorway. "Buddy, are you alright?"
"I'm fine -- take her and get out of here!" You cough out. You point your sword into the ground to balance on it and get up to your feet. Professor Roth buttons a few of Miranda's buttons up on her shirt and pulls her pants up and heads out of the door.
In the excitement, you didn't hear what was going on outside. As you quickly limp to the door, you watch the chaos. The security force is fighting off three men each, spells are flying through the air and people are dying left and right. One security officer is down, and Assandra is at the door.
"Come on, hurry!" She yells at you. Once you get to her, she helps you to stand and starts dragging you up the stairs.

Everything goes black.
>>
>>36460332
You wake up in a white room. All you see is light for a moment. Then you look around. You're in the school hospital. Miranda is in a chair next to your bed.
"B-Buddy?" She looks at you. She's been holding your hand. "Are you alright?"
"Yeah, I think I'm fine. How long have I been here?"
"T-three days."
A mage wearing white robes comes into the room.
"Buddy Holly," he says, "You're finally awake. Your wound was pretty bad, but we sealed it shut. You'll have to live with the scar, though."
"Am I going to be alright?" You ask him.
"Oh, yes. You should be able to get right back into fencing in just a day or two. We're very good here. You're free to go now." He walks away.
"I'm sorry," Miranda says. "I-it's all my fault. I shouldn't have ever gone there. You almost died because of me."
You sit up in your bed. What do you do? What do you say?

"Miranda, I am not going to say it is fine, but I want to understand why. Why did you keep going?"
"I just couldn't stop, Buddy. All I wanted was more. Everything became unbearable without it. I got sick when I wouldn't have more. It was terrible. But your friend, the professor, he helped me.
