You are Reinhold, master swordsman and victor of the Royal Swordsmanship Tournament. The King was so impressed with your skill, he personally requested that you be transferred out of the army and into the Royal Guard! Not bad for an orphan who was raised in a brothel in a poor fishing village.

The only issue at this point is your assignment... you've been charged to be the personal guard of the King's only daughter Marianne. While she is the vision of loveliness that you'd expect from a Princess, her personality is... well... she seems to have some issues.

Instead of spending a nice relaxing day by the lake with your friends, you've opted to accompany Arnaud on a trip to the hellhole where you grew up in order to kill some Leviathans.

And also save people.

Can't forget that.

>Congratulations, Reinhold is now a fearsome DIRE WOLF!
>Much larger than their the other types of wolf, the Dire Wolf's size also means that they are also that much more dangerous.
>The Princess considers you to be her dear friend!
>But while dire wolves are massive, they still don't -quite- stand on the same level as people.

You've never been up this high before. While you've been up on tall bridges and even the roof of the castle in Marconetti that one time, it's decidedly different when there's nothing solid under your feet. You're just sitting here in the harness on a Wyvern's back and it's honestly kind of intimidating.

...more like -extremely- intimidating.

"Are you doing alright, Reinhold?" Arnaud asks. "I don't think you've ever had reason to ride one of these things before."
"No I haven't, but I think I'll be okay," you reply. "Just need to get used to the height, is all," you say with a weak laugh. "...and the wind."
"Yes, this always does take a while for beginners to get used to," Arnaud nods. "The first time I rode a Wyvern, I threw up all over the place!"

You're REALLY glad that you're not doing that.

"Nicolas was -so- mad..." the old butler laughs. "...but I guess this ride isn't for fun, is it."
"Nope," you shake you head.

This is the closest thing you can get to revenge for Citrine's awful life prior to marrying Marius, so you're not about to let this opportunity go.

"...do you do this a lot?" you ask.
"What, Leviathan extermination?" Arnaud asks back. "Not particularly, I haven't been personally called out to do this since the King was around Elena's age. But I never pass up the opportunity to get these old bones moving, I really will get old if I don't keep myself active, after all."

You're not quite sure what he means by that.

"And when I saw the look in your eyes when I mentioned what was going on over in Cateno, I knew that I had to take you along," Arnaud says. "I know how it is to want to get revenge for a loved one..."

Yay! PGQ is back.
I'm still catching up on False Dendrite, so I can't participate in those threads. Super glad where back to PGQ because without it distracting me for 6-8 hours a day, I start thinking about how empty and lonely my life is and that's no fun.

"...you do?" you ask.

Arnaud always seemed like a pretty happy person, so you're kind of usrporised to hear that he's ever felt, well... the strong urge to murder things that you get every once in a while.

"Oh yes," Arnaud nods. "Back when I was around Sir Gregory's age, I ran afoul of a particularly awful individual... I'd rather not get into too many specifics, but by the end of it I'd lost my entire family and he was a hair's breadth from killing Nicolas and Celestino as well."

A hair's breadth from killing CELESTINO? Luciana's father, Celestino? The super powerful wizard-king of Marconetti? And Nicolas would be Nicolette's grandfather... you don't even want to imagine what the hell could possibly be strong enough to be able to even -almost- fight evenly with both of them...

Anon here. Question for the players.

I started reading this thing awhile ago, and stopped after the Monqiue/Sealed King Fiasco, and the supposed Luciana route-lock.

Define Better. With a route locked, rein get's slightly less retarded around girls, since it is a conscious shitfest of anons trying to screw each others waifu over. I've stuck around since our first spar with nicolette, and this is one of the highlights of my day. SO the answer is Maybe.

But the last few with Karel were pretty good, stuff actually happened.
>>
>>36577874
>[2/2]

"I was scared and desperate..." Arnaud says. "...while Celestino and Nicolas bought some time for me, I called in a favor from someone who we'd helped a few years prior and he lent me the strength I needed to kill that bastard with my own two hands."
"...whoa," you say, staring at him in awe.
"Killing him didn't bring my wife or daughter back, but I'd like to at least think that it helped their souls to pass on," he sighs. "So don't think I'm just humoring you when I say that I understand how you feel."

You'd put that beyond "knowing how you feel," if anything.

>how do you respond?
>>
>>36578134
It's hard to say if it gets better when you don't explain what you want out of it, Anon.

But if you didn't like it before, I don't see why that would change. Though you can read the next day for the big battle.
>>
>>36578134

Someone asked me about it before, so I guess I'll put it up to as vote now. I use a diceless system in False Dendrite that was so kindly stolen offered from GARdian, and it's worked pretty well for the two actual fights that I've run in that quest thus far.

Now I could always switch Princes Guard's battles to it in order to exchew dice altogether, but if you guys want to keep the dice then that's fine too. I don't like to leave things solely upto RNG, but you're the players here.

Like, maybe dice for non-combat stuff that actually requires randomization or straight dumb luck, but that's it.

Definitely not a guard, that would imply Rein doing a good job,

"Citrine!" my father calls out from down the pier. "Did you get all of your stuff packed?"
"Yeah, I did that last night"! I shout back. "I thought Mom put it all on the boat already!"
"...really?" he looks over at our boat. "Uh, I guess I'll go ahead and check to see if she actually did..." he says as he grabs a hanging rope and walks a few paces backwards.

I never get tired of watching him do this stuff, it's like he's some kind of pirate or something. Once he's built up enough distance between him and our boat, my father breaks into a sprint towards the water and jumps just before he'd fall off the pier. His strong hands pull the rope in his grip taut as it supports his entire body, swinging forwards just long enough... and then he lets go and flies through the air for a few seconds before landing on the deck of the boat.

"Haha, I still got it!" my father laughs to himself. "Hey Citrine, didja see your old man make that awesome jump!?" he waves at me.
"Yeah, I sure did!" I shout, waving back at him.

I wish I was cool enough to do that... the last time I tried, I ended up falling into the river and I had to swim all the way over to the beach in order to get out of the water.

This is the morning that our family leaves Perricone forever. My father used to run a shipping company but the company went completely under for some reason that I don't understand and we've pretty much lost everything... he says that there's nothing but bad memories left here so he managed to convince my mother to abandon everything and sail down the river to Granache so we can start a new life.

Nobody asked me, of course... I'm completely happy here with my home and my friends and everything else. Plain old me even managed to get a boyfriend too, but we now I'm never going to see him again.

Just thinking about it's making me tear up.

But there's no sense in dwelling on stuff that I can't change, that's what my father always tells me. You can't change the past but the future is full of endless possibilities so you just gotta keep a positive outlook and greet tomorrow with a smile!

I really like that way of thinking, but that doesn't mean that it's easy to do at times like this.

After making my final rounds around the neighborhood and saying goodbye to everyone for the last time, I walk up the plank onto our boat.

"You ready to go, honey?" my Mom asks as she emerges from the cabin. "You haven't left anything, have you?"
"I'm not ready at all but all my stuff is on this boat so I guess I don't really have a choice," I mumble.
"C'mon, don't be like that..."

My mother walks up to me and wraps her arms around me... and the whole façade that I'd been putting up ever since I was told that we'd be leaving breaks in an instant. Unable to control myself, I bury my head into her chest and start bawling my eyes out. It's like I'm five years old again.

"It's alright to be sad, I know how much you wanted to stay," she says, running her hand through my hair as I cry and cry. "Just let it all out."

And I do. While my father runs around the boat and takes care of the final preparations to ship out, I stand there and sob uncontrollably while everyone watches.

...that's a lie, nobody even bothers to show up to see us off.

Goodbye, Perricone.

Goodbye, Theodore.

Goodbye, home.

Unable to watch my entire life drift by me as we sail out of the harbor, I head inside the cabin and sit down on my bed. I kind of hate my father right now for making me leave everything behind...

"Yo, Citrine!" the cabin door swings open and my father comes strolling in.
"...hey," I mumble, not even raising my head to look at him.

And then I feel the mattress sink in next to me and a hand patting me on the head.

"I know things're looking rough right now, but the bad times never last," he says. "But just watch, tomorrow will be so great that our life in Perricone will look like total crap in comparison!" he says with an uneasy laugh.
"I really doubt that," I say as I brush his hand away. "I've never been to Granache, I don't KNOW anyone in Granache... it's an entirely different country, I don't know how you can be so calm about this!"

"Wanna know a secret?" my father puts his hand back onto the top of my head.
"...what?" I push it off again.
"I'm actually scared out of my mind!" he laughs.

Bullshit.

"You're just saying that to make me feel better," I grumble. "Cut it out, I'm not a little kid anymore."
"Hey, I'm being totally serious here," he sighs. "I screwed up and borrowed money from the wrong people and lost everything... all the bad shit we're going through is my fault, and now your mother's kind enough to go along with this big plan to start anew in Granache."

...I guess that would be something worth freaking about.

"And if things don't go right this time, she's sure to kick my stupid ass aside and find someone who -isn't- a moron to provide for the two of you..." he sighs. "I'm not so naive that I don't know that this is a huge gamble we're taking here."
"Then why did you make us leave home in the first place!?" I shout.

I want to punch him so hard right now! He screwed up and he KNOWS he screwed up and now we're the ones paying for it!

"There's nothing for us back there," he says, shaking his head. "I thought it over for a good long time and came to the conclusion that this is the best course of action for us."

"All I can do is ask you to give me a chance here," my father says, patting me on the back. "But I don't blame you for being pissed at me so I'll leave you alone now..."

He then gets up and heads back out to the deck, but then he peeks his head back through the door.

"Me and your mother'll be on the deck if you need anything, okay?" he says.
"Yeah, whatever," I mumble.

And with a big goofy smile on his face, my father slides back out of sight.

Stupid jerk.

Leaving me in here to be all depressed by myself... and my mother's out there with him so I'll have to put up with his presence if I want to be around -her-...

Screw it, I'm not going to stay in here this entire time.

>[6/?]
>>
>>36580199

I walk out onto the deck, making a point to stay on the opposite end from where my father is for the next few hours. And by next few hours, I mean that we left at maybe ten o'clock in the morning and now it's sunset.

Shut up, stomach...

"Citrine!" my father playfully slaps me on the back.
"What do you want?" I say, slapping him on the back in a very much NOT playful manner.
"I was called here by your angry stomach," he says, poking me right there. "It's demanding to be fed, and since I'm the provider for our family..."

UGH.

"We have some muffins left over from this morning," UI sigh. "I'll just gho into the cabin and get some of those."
"That's no good!" my mother says, popping up from behind me.

Great, now I'm surrounded.

"You can't just only eat muffins, Citrine!" she scolds me.
"Well Dad ate all the fish that we had left in the house this morning so it's not like I can do anything else," I grumble.
"Psh, I can take care of that," my father says, his eyes twinkling.

Oh no.

He's about to do something stupid again.

Fish?

By the way, what type of vessel is it?
>>
>>36580280

"Ta-DAH!" he says, spinning a long staff in his hand.
"...what is that," I ask, glaring at him.
"You brought that old thing with us?" my mother sighs.
"And why wouldn't I?" he laughs.

It's got a metal loop on one end, and a sharp pointy bit on the other side...

"Is that a harpoon?" I ask, dumbfounded. I don't even know why the hell he'd HAVE one of those.
"As a matter of fact, it is!" he boasts, holding it up in the air as if he's trying to stab the sky itself. "And I'm gonna show you that I'm not -completely- worthless!"

I can't wait to see this.

Shooing me aside, my father walks to the edge of the boat and look down into the rover, then heads to the mast and attaches a rope to the loop portion of his harpoon. Once he's sure that it's nice and tight, he returns to the edge and waits a few minutes before throwing the thing as hard as he possibly can into the water.

Almost the second it hits the water, my father tugs on the rope and pulls the harpoon out... with a huge fish skewered on the tip.

"Master spear fisher, reporting for duty!" my father says, grinning proudly.
"You're just as amazing as ever!" my mother giggles.
"...yeah, I guess that was kind of cool," I mumble.

I don't know where the hell he learned how to do that.

After spearing another fish of the same size, my father hands them over to my mother so that she can cook them up.

"So Citrine, has you opinion of me raised at least a little bit?" he asks.
"Just a tiny amount," I reply. "Like the width of an eyelash."
"So I -have- made progress!" he laughs.

It doesn't take long for the fish to get finished cooking, and we enjoy a decent meal while we sail along.

Dinner was good and all, but now there's a really gross fish smell inside the cabin so I head out to the deck to get some fresh air. I spend the next halfhour or so just gazing off into the distance... the moon's full tonight so there's pretty decent lighting despite it being nighttime.

"You don't have to worry about river pirates, you know..."

I look behind me, and find my mother waving sheepishly at me. With a tired sigh, I motion that it's okay for her to join me in my moongazing.

"You feeling a little bit better, honey?" she asks.
"Not really," I reply. "I'm just trying to take my mind off how pissed I am right now instead."
"That's a decent enough idea, I guess," she says, kissing me on the cheek.
"Is that why you came out here too?" I ask.
"Mmm..." she turns to face the river. "Maybe. Mostly I wanted to admire the way the river looks at under the moonlight. Your father proposed to me on a night like this, you know..."

"Eh?"

Mt mother peers down at the part that I'm pointing at... and immediately reels back and pulls me along with her.

"Mom!?" I shout. "What the-MGNGGM" she covers my mouth with her hand and raises a finger to her own lips.
"Citrine, I need you to be as silent as you can, okay?" she whispers.

I've heard stories about those things from the old guys who like to hang out by the docks... they wreck boats and eat grown men whole, and-

"Citrine," my mother shakes me. "I need you to go inside and -calmly- tell your father, okay?"
"O... okay," I nod."

With my heart feeling like it's about to break out of my chest, I tiptoe back to the cabin, where I find my father looking over what seems like a map.

"Hey Citrine, what's up?" he asks.
"S..." I gulp. "Sea serpent..."

His eyes grow wider than I've ever seen them.

"Shit shit shit shit shit shit shit shit" he mutters under his breath as he grabs the harpoon that he used to fish us up dinner, and then produces a SECOND one. "Citrine, where's your mother at?"
"Out on the deck," I reply. "I think she's keeping guard..."
"God damn it," he growls as he runs outside.

Stupidly, I follow after him... and then the boat rocks violently the second I step out onto the deck. I'm thrown up into the air and land back down on my shoulder, sending an absolutely awful pain shooting through my entire arm.

I think it's dislocated.

Tuning out the pain, I take a few deep breaths and right myself, only to fall over again thanks to the entire boat shaking all over the place. Along with the panicked screams of my parents, I hear a roaring that's almost like thunder...

"Daddy!" without thinking, I shout for him as I stumble around the center of the boat and search for my parents.

That's when I see it. A huge monster rising out of the water, the same deep blue color as the night sky. And its eyes are a dull yellow, standing out even more thanks to the moonlight reflecting off of them. Its low roars shake the boat itself as it opens its mouth and bares countless pearl-colored teeth as if showing them off to me...

...and then it snaps towards the deck.

Right where my mother's trying to regain her balance.

And just before I'm able to reach her, the sea serpent reels back and lets out a horrible wail of pain. That's when I notice a harpoon gouged right in the thing's left eye socket.

"Get back, you two!" my father shouts as he readies his second harpoon.
"But that's your last one, you don't have any way to kill that thing!" my mother yells back.
"There's always a way!" he screams." Now get below deck before this thing decides that you're going to be its next meal!"

My mother just nods in agreement as she picks me up under her arm somehow and races towards the doorway to the cabin.

"But what about Daddy!" I scream. "You can't just leave him there!"
"He'll be fine," she says, covering her mouth with her free hand. "He always finds a way to make it out of problems safely..."

We better pull out an Ahab on the motherfucking sea serpent:

Oh, lonely death on lonely life! Oh, now I feel my topmost greatness lies in my topmost grief. Ho, ho! from all your furthest bounds, pour ye now in, ye bold billows of my whole foregone life, and top this one piled comber of my death! Towards thee I roll, thou all-destroying but unconquering serpent; to the last I grapple with thee; from hell's heart I stab at thee; for hate's sake I spit my last breath at thee.

As my mother runs for the doorway, it... moves away from us.

"Wha...?" I look back and find a SECOND sea serpent slamming our boat with its tail. With every hit, more and more of the wooden planks that make up the deck are smashed up until the entire boat starts to split in two.
"Citrine, hold on!" my mother shouts as she tries desperately to keep me in her arms... but I only have one usable arm and we're falling towards the water and-

Everything goes black for a few seconds. When I come to, I find myself lying down on a small bit of the boat's deck that wasn't completely destroyed by the second sea serpent.

But wait-

"Mommy!" I scream. She was right by me, where did she go!?

That horrible wail shakes the deck that I'm floating on along with my bones themselves, and my vision is drawn towards its source.

That disgusting monster, its expressionless eyes are staring right at me. Slowly, it opens its bloodstained mouth and the wind catches a piece of cloth that's stuck on its teeth.

Poor Nico she loses the Reinbowl and now he's gonna get knighted before her

Reinhold probably won't earn knighthood until a few years have passed.

While I lie there paralyzed with pain and grief and fear, I hear another scream. But it's not the thunderous call of the sea serpent, it sounds like the ragged screams of a...

"D... Daddy?" I work up enough energy to turn my head and find my father leaping from piece to piece of our ruined boat. He's covered in blood and he's holding half of a shattered harpoon and the look on his face is filled with pure hate.
"Citrine, stay right there!" he shouts. "I'm coming for you!"

I hear the monster roar again, and everything goes black.

"Hey, she's opening her eyes!" I hear a man call out.
"Ngh..." I groan, clutching my shoulder. "Wha...?"

I open my eyes, and see the sun shining on me.

...the SUN!?

"Daddy!" I shout, snapping upright. "Daddy, where are you!?"

That thing... it ATE Mommy and then he was running at it with that broken harpoon and- oh no.

"You're the only one who we fished out of the water, girly," an old man says, leaning over me.

Looking around, I see a bunch of shabby-looking buildings and a river and... I'm sitting on the docks? But this isn't home...

"Where am I?" I ask, looking around. "My father, we were attacked by sea serpents and one of them got my mother but he was-"
"Like I said, we only fished you up," the man says, shaking his head. "Nobody else."

I've lost EVERYTHING. We were supposed to go to Granache to start a new life but those fucking monsters ruined everything...

"Well you're alive at least," the old man says, shaking his head knowingly. "I dunno what happened to your folks, maybe they got ate up by a Leviathan or summat but you're still here."

That doesn't mean a Goddamned thing when I don't have anything worth living for.

"In any event, I've done my good deed for the day," he says, grunting as he stands up and cracks his elbows. "You've got my condolences, but I have my own shit to deal with now."
"Wha...?" I reach out to him. "You're leaving me here?"
"You're awake so you're not my problem anymore," he shrugs. "Welcome to Cateno, kid."

I try to beg him not to just ditch me here, but he isn't hearing any of it. And so, I find myself stranded here in... I don't even know what country this is.

It's daytime but this place looks pretty dangerous so I don't really feel comfortable just staying out here on the docks. I mean, there's big burly men all over the place and it feels like they're eyeing me up or something. And while I might feel like jumping back into that stupid fucking river and ending it all right now, that's not what my parents would ever want me to do.

Good or bad, I'm still here. Alive.

Gathering myself up, I head into what passes for the town. As I get further and further away from the docks, I can't help but notice that this place looks every bit as awful as I'm feeling right now. But I can't just mope forever, I'm all alone and I don't have anyone and I'm going to have to find some way to take care of myself if I don't want to starve to death.

"Wha!?"

While I'm lost in my thoughts, I'm brought back to reality by something running right into me. Losing my balance, I fall backwards and land on the dirt road.

"Reinhold, what did I tell you about looking where you're going!?" a girl shouts in a motherly tone.
"Sorry..." a little boy says, standing over me and extending his hand to me.

I must really be out of it, I was knocked on my ass by a freaking baby.

"A... are you okay?" the little boy asks. "I didn't hurt you, did I? Can you stand back up?"
"Yeah, I think so," I mumble as I push myself back to my feet. There's no way that skinny kid could actually be able to help me up himself.

After making sure that I'm alright, the little brown-haired boy runs back over to the girl who he was with. She has long black hair, and she's wearing a really racy-looking outfit... lots of cleavage. I dunno why she'd be dressed like that while out on the town with her kid, but maybe that's just what people in this country dress like...

"Sorry about that," the lady says, extending a hand to me. "I keep telling him to watch where he's going, but you know how kids can be..."
"No, it's alright," I reply as I shake her hand. "No harm done."

At least they have manners here.

"My name is Spinelle," she says, placing a hand to her chest, "and this little guy here is Reinhold."
"...hi," he says, waving to me with a nervous smile on his face.
"Are you sure that he didn't run into you too hard?" she asks. "You look like you're about to cry."

>>36582639
Spinelle's pattern of abuse and situation are fairly consistent with someone who was damaged or a victim in her own right, Millien came from a cushy background and has no excuse whatsoever.

>>36582656
Oh I agree, she's probably just a bad person; I was speaking more from familiarity with the soul-grinding world of actual abuse. Citrine also had a good childhood into her mid teens, which would offer a lot of protection against becoming a monster; and despite education via beatings, Reinhold always had at least one kind person to latch on to in the form of pre-rapey Spinelle and then Citrine, so the psychological abuse wasn't until late childhood and there was always a rock of support.

>>36582848
In all honesty killing her is probably terrible for moving on and coming to terms with things, because it'd be a powerful affirmation that what she did is still important to us. Bluntly telling her to fuck off before ignoring her would be more effective, getting her to be repentant the best. Seeing the person who wronged you sorry in proportion to the pain they had caused is infinitely more cathartic than knowing they died still thinking they did nothing wrong.

Killing the Leviathans is a different matter since they're basically just animals with no intent; with them we're putting an end to the natural hazard that hurt our loved ones so it can't hurt anyone else again.

I just really want a scene of a broken up Reinhold asking Spinelle why she did what she did, if she knew how much she made him hate her or how much she made him hate himself. Usually when something hurts you with intent, the only way to deal with it is to get them to feel remorse or else learn to stop caring either by no longer giving a shit or having strong emotional support to put it behind you. Depending on where Spinelle lies on the crazy/evil axis for motive, we're pretty much dependent on the last option.

I'm not talking about what's best for Rein's mentality, I'm talking about what's best for the young orphan boys of Cateno and if she proves herself to be a serial-paedo, then killing her is the best way to deal with her.
And even if she hasn't actually done it yet, she still potentially could, so we should still kill her but whatever.

The thing is, they almost always pull the remorse card right out of their asses just as they're about to die. No. Fuck no. You don't get to act like you feel bad about how shit went down just because it backfired on you and now you're bleeding on the ground about it.

It's actually why I liked Kefka and Kuja so much in the Final Fantasy games, both are villains you can love to hate, and yet ironically enough both of them have shitty circumstances that led to them becoming how they were, without trying to make excuses for them. Kefka's nihilistic self-destruction consumed him as a result of the life he led, but not once was he apologetic about it. Rather, he was entirely resigned to his own death because all it was was an affirmation of his own beliefs.

Same with Kuja. Kuja's villainous douchery did not come with an inkling of remorse or anything of that sort. But you could also see there was a hint of torment to his existance by virtue of living as a disposal puppet, and wanting to wrest control over his own fate, only to be met with the inevitability of his death. His freaking out and selfish desire to take everyone else down with him is never apologized for, and Zidane instead simply sympathizes by pointing out that he could just have easily wound up that way had their roles been reversed. No apologies, no excuses. Just 'that's how shit panned out'. If anything, the only reason why Kuja might get off easier than Kefka is because his last act before dying is to repay Zidane's kindness and save his life. It doesn't make up for what he's done, but it's all he can do to at least not die as a total rotten asshole.

Those are good villains with shit backstories that you can understand and relate to, without excusing their horrible actions and making them out to be redeemable. Fuck, even Vegeta has a better, more solid arc as to his redemption than most characters nowadays do.

Deathbed redemptions often feel like they're killing the character mainly because they lacked the ability to convincingly write a genuine and satisfying change of heart so they bump them off to stop people thinking they're just getting away with it, coupled with a three-year-olds grasp of poetic justice. It can work, but it's so often forced.

Kotomine Kirei also kind of falls into that spectrum of being a remorseless dick who you can't really hate in spite of it all. As Shirou himself states, all they are is just men following their beliefs, and whether those beliefs are valid or not is ultimately irrelevant. He does what he has to do, and so will you. You can almost kind of respect him for that, which is when you know you have a good enemy.

A villain who you can hate, and want to beat the shit out of, but also respect for having the strength of his convictions, is hard to come by.
>>
>>36584773
Ironically enough, that's one of the reasons why Oda tries to avoid killing off characters in One Piece: he sees it as a cop out in terms of storytelling. Hell, it's why you always see those little cover page mini-arcs for some of the villains, some of them finding redemption off-screen by pursuing new goals and having their own little adventures.

Norwegian language is a bit weird about stuff like that. We have two Norwegian written languages in use and a lot of words that used to be distinctive for one can nowadays be used freely in both, due to failed attempts to merge them back in the first half of the 20th century.
We also have a shitload of separate dialects and people take a lot of pride in the way they speak.

>RemorseLESS villain that somehow makes you root for him in spite of being a completely unapologetic and entirely horrible monster at times.
That's just being a stylish as all fuck asshole.
I don't think you can intentionally design a character like that, it probably sort of just happens somewhere along they way.

I've not read any One Piece, so I can't really comment on his success there versus what was said about Naruto (which I also have not read) here >>36584366

I can respect that, if the characters actually get a decent redemption arc and there aren't ludicrous contortions to avoid deaths that cross the standard levels of goofiness in the setting.

I'd say it actually works really well in mostall occasins, because it gives Oda nice, big wealth of characters to return to rather than do what Naruto and Bleach always did and just make up new characters for every single arc and chapter and then get rid of them as soon as they appeared. Bleach is the worst in this regard, where they introduce new characters almost every five chapters, then forget all about them.

At least Oda still remembers his characters, and brings them back into the narrative - sometimes entirely unexpectedly. There's been occasions where a villain that hadn't been seen or encountered for YEARS suddenly showed up in a prison break and became a companion character for a whole, full story arc, before then moving on to becoming a major political figure.

>he sees it as a cop out in terms of storytelling.
What? He sounds like a shit writer
>>

In most cases it's not even a full face-heel-turn redemption. They're still jerks and assholes, but they're no longer the kind of bastardous villains who would tyrannize or ruin lives like they used to. After all, you don't need to be NICE, or even GOOD to be a better person on the path to redemption.

Though one villain becoming the de facto 'King of the Moon' is hilarious.

Not really. As he put it in an interview, it's easy to kill a character, but it's even more challenging to write a satisfying 'farewell' or to find ways to include them into future narratives.

I'd say that's actually a sign of a competent writer. Killing a character off is cheap and quick and ultimately requires no more effort than 'okay, he dead now'.
>>

I think a lot of people convince themselves that holding off on a villain's sad past until a shocking deathbed reveal is an automatic pass to writing a "deep" character.
They present the villain initially as increibly one-dimensional and keep them that way for 99% of their screentime, then dump all of their characterization and motivation in one scene and it's like "aren't you invested in this character now?" and the usual response is "not really" because you've shown them to be a complete bore for so long that this sudden twist isn't enough to make up for all the time wasted on them already.
If you want people to he engaged by any character, hero, villain or otherwise, it's probably a good idea to let the audience have a reason to get invested early on rather than witholding everything then going "HAHA! You see, he was really an interesting character all along, you just didn't know that because I was hiding it from you until now."

It's shit writing if it's an excuse to avoid having to write about death or hedging bets about bringing characters back, but otherwise it's perfectly acceptable.

>>36585002
This is my problem with a lot of deathbed confession crap. A lazy allusion to depth that was never really there.

Each character doesn't deserve a farewell, what is bad writing it avoiding death and giving them all redemption. Killing a character is only lazy if the writer does it in a lazy way but keeping characters alive simply because that's how i write is lazy
>>
>>36585088
Well, the second half of that was 'or to find ways to include them into future narratives'. No, each character doesn't deserve a farewell, but again, if you do it like Bleach and Naruto does you basically hand disposable characters who aren't worth your time at all.

Hell, the current arc of Bleach is such a beautifully abhorrent snoozefest because it's hyping the shit out of a character we've never seen, never heard of, or know anything about, currently kicking the main villain's ass up and down the floor like a total badass. This, in a series where the protagonist is always, ALWAYS the one who gets to face the final boss, and every character besides the protagonist has been treated as a disposable hand towel for the past decade or more, only serves to make for a boring, plodding 'get on with it, we know he loses' case of bad writing designed to hype up the main character when he starts to beat up the big bad.

In contrast to this, Oda actually handles his characters really well. Hell, the dude now works with having eight main cast members as the crew, plus any extra allies he introduces, and he does an alarmingly good job of giving them all screen-time and development.
>>
>>36585002
I think the judgement on the villain's character is just a part of the struggle. At the end of the day the hero needs to make choices based on higher moral principles than just "he deserves it/doesn't deserve it". So I dislike both cheap redemptions and revenge fantasy where you go out of your way to build a flat irredeemable character just so you can kill him guilt-free.

My taste isnt that bad

That's all a claim and doesn't illustrate how he does it well so I'm not going to take your word for it. Also I'm way to tired to give a shit about if this Oda guy can write or not, but from the way he has been described about character deaths and also he writes manga I doubt it.

That also sucks. An irredeemable villain isn't necessarily a bad thing and they can be incredibly fun if handled well, but when done poorly it just sucks. You're just left at the feeling like you've wasted your time.

>>36585321
Well, you seem to have had made your mind up in advance, so I have little cause or interest to sway it in the first place.

Suit yourself, as they say.
