Pokemon: Southern Shores Quest

Grey and Nick are in the middle of conversing with Math, resident Ranger and "Scyther expert," supposedly. It is currently Grey's fourth day into the Tour, and he is contemplating catching a Scyther before going after his first badge. He currently has a team of six Pokemon.

Well, Math said that you're going to bait the Scythers. Only problem is, you're not precisely sure what he has in mind. That's a pretty vague idea.

“Alright,” you lean back into the couch; it’s old and what little cushion it once had is now long gone. “So how exactly are we going to bait the Scythers in? How do we know they’ll show up, and not something else?”

Nick adds to your question with “And how are we going to mask our presence? Or, well, some shit like that? You said they could track us, right?”

Math shrugs and looks at the tabletop for a moment. Then he reaches into one of his jacket’s pockets and pulls out an electronic notepad and stylus. He starts marking out a list of some kind.

“Okay then, we’ll work this systematically. Tell me everything you have to work with.”

You and Nick go over all of the Pokemon you had or might have to work with, including moves and strategies. Math adds a couple details, including that supplying your “expedition” with some scent masking agent shouldn’t be a problem. When you start asking him about his contribution is when the conversation turns surprising.

“So what Pokemon will you be using, Math?”

The Ranger looks up from the notepad, stylus still touched to the flexible screen. “Hm? I’m not using my Pokemon.” You take on a surprised look at that. “Wouldn’t feel right, and I’m a Ranger after all. I have obligations during the week.” He laughs a bit, leaning back and brushing his shoulder off with one hand.

“’Yep, it’d be too easy if I did all the work for you Sorties, after all… I just wanted to tell you about the Utility Tower near the Main Line that runs out from the compound, help you get some bait, and maybe watch the videos later from the CCTV.” You and Nick both sit up, you looking unimpressed and Nick looking pissed. He speaks up first.

“I thought you were at least coming along, man.” Math just goes back to writing out some details on the notepad, shaking his head in the negative. “Fuck you, man! You’re not even going to see your plan put into action? We could be killed!”

Math lets the stylus fall out of his hand, onto the notepad. “Yeah, well it’s not my job to keep you from doing stupid shit, is it?” His fingertips start rapping on the tabletop and his eyes are still on the notepad. “I’m already helping you, and this is supposed to be YOUR Tour; neither of you have even offered anything in return for that help, either.”

Nick just stands up, “Yeah, well, you offered it freely. And it’s Grey’s idea. I was just helping out.” He blows a “damn” out of tightly drawn lips, then adds a “What do you want, anyways?”

>cont
>>
>>36585482

“Well, in return you should help by cleaning out the Stables. Clean up some shit in return for giving me shit? That’s a fair Trainer Task. Should only take part of an afternoon, and seems worth it for expert consultation from someone like myself.” Math stands up himself, rolling his shoulders around while muttering “…Shit. Ungrateful kids.”

Damn. Are you the only one at this table that doesn't get pissy quick?

You hold up a hand. “Alright, listen. You didn’t finish. Everybody just calm down.” You motion to Math: “Let me hear your plan, okay?” He looks down at you, arms crossed and his brow and lips drawn into a cool expression.

>We can work something out about helping you.
>You know what? Fine. I’ll just do this on my own. Thanks for mentioning the tower.
>Can I still have the scent masking stuff? I’ll pay you back or something.
>Just come along in case someone’s about to be killed, okay? It’s more interesting than going on patrol.

You stand up, arms outstretched in a placating manner. “Alright, everyone just chill out.”

Math responds with an “I am chill” and pulls out an e-cig. Nick just starts scrolling through something on his SILPHone. Both of them seem finished with the conversation, but screw that.

“Okay, awesome. Everyone’s chill.” You roll your eyes a bit at that and chant how you “must resist punching dickwads.”

“Look, Nick: Math has offered us help, yeah? Even if it’s not what we were expecting it’s still something. And, Math, you have to understand that we’re worried about this. Yeah, we know it’s intense; that’s why we were looking forward to your help. That’s why I’m going to ask you to go out there with us, at least so nobody dies. It’s more interesting than a standard patrol, right?”

Math takes a long draw, shrugs, and taps his cig against his knee. He looks out one of the front windows and blows a long trail of smoke. “Yeah, I got you. Don’t wanna die’n shit. Aw, man.” He taps the cig against his knee harder. “Fuckin’ Scythers.” Then he laughs. Awesome. Nick doesn’t look up when he replies to that.

“Right, ‘fuckin’ Scythers,’ and they could kill us. It's hilarious, damn." This is going great so far. "Look, I understand that he offered some help but Math doesn’t seem concerned about our safety, Grey. This is just entertainment to him.”

You don't believe that. “That’s not true, right, Math?”

Math just looks back through the window, taking another drag.

“Right?”

>cont.
>>
>>36586027

“Nah. Nick’s right. Kinda.” You’re disappointed at that, and he can see it on your face: that’s a dick move. “Listen, I see and hear about people dying all the time. It’s my job, for fucks’ sake. I guess I just ain’t surprised or worried about death anymore. Jaded, or something.” He sighs, standing up straight and ruffling his hair with both hands.

“But, look, I don’t want you to die. I’ll go out there – but you better clean the shit outta those stables. Okay?”

“And what about the scent masking stuff? And the bait? The plan?”

“Yeah, yeah. Just catch a deerling or something, we keep a feeder nearby. We’ll roast it, sit in waiting, spray some shit on… I’ll come with.” He takes another hit of smoke. “Sorry about earlier. ‘S’not funny sending you guys out there alone. But I ain’t battling them! That’s like, y’know, cheating.”

You shrug. Nick apologizes as well, though it’s a bit more tepid.

“Yeah, I take what I said back and apologize. You better not get us killed though, you dumbasses.”

Math leaves a copy of his notes with you, heading back off to the main gate. Before leaving, though, he asks about “So when do you want to do this? Tonight? Tomorrow? You mentioned training some of your ‘mons?”

And then he chuckles a bit. “And you better budget some time for stable shoveling.”

>Response?
>>
>>36586044
Probably tomorrow, maybe the late afternoon. Do we have to do the stable shoveling before or after the scyther hunt? We have two mons that we've yet to release, right? Need to spend more time with those and train them along with the others.

>>
>>36586391
And lose all of Wednesday.
We're on a schedule here.
>>
>>36586391
We're baiting them, and that means that they're coming to us.

Which means waiting. We could easily be waiting a couple hours before they catch any sort of scent or hint and show up. And we do not want it to be dark when that happens.
>>
Okay.

So I'm just going to write up a couple itineraries here:

>1) Train Pokemon now. Clean stables tonight. Tomorrow morning go out and catch Scyther. Go from there.

2) Do stuff, and then go hunting for Scythers tomorrow afternoon.

Anyone want to suggest something different? Ask any questions?

You grab a pen off of the table and scribble down a couple notes onto the plan for “training and shoveling shit tonight,” and then “don’t die to Scythers tomorrow.”

Nick and Math agree to the plan, and then you search out Dani and Erica. They’re over near the food vendor, sharing some French Fries and chatting over Mittens. You make a note that the little Espurr is stealing little fried potato pieces off of the table and quickly stuffing them into her mouth. You don't know how healthy that is, but at least it's adorable.

Once the three of you share some pleasantries and some French fries (you’re pretty hungry, actually) you discuss the upcoming events.

I'm curious as to how many Scythers Anons intend to catch.

This isn't sarcasm or anything, I'm genuinely curious what you guys expect the outcome of the hunt to be beyond "survive, catch Grey a Scyther"
>>
>>36586949
All of them?...
>>
>>36586949
We could always go full Ketchum and catch 30 of them.

Scyther corps will inevitably be useful when all the wild pokemon go batshit due to the radiowave the Professor was talking about or some shit.
>>
>>36586949
The idea was two.
Before Nick showed what an ass he was, I wanted one for us and one for Nick and then we'd compete and shit. But now... well I'd be happy with one.
>>
>>36586949
I have no idea. I wasn't one of the anons wanting a Scyther. I think just one or two should be good, better not to be too greedy. Then again. We have 15 pokeballs altogether, excluding Nick's, so if we REALLY wanted a shitton of Scythers..
>>
>>36586949
As many as we can, you can never have too many scythers. I don't doubt that they'd pay for the balls used to capture them either, we could trade them for dosh or something.

I say don't go out of our way to catch more than one but if we end up knocking a bunch out it'd just be daft to pass up the opportunity.

Hell, if we clear out their roaming band then we may as well raid the nest for eggs or whatnot

“So, I think we settled on a plan for catching some Scyther.” You much on a handful of French fries.

Dani peers over her soda, setting it down
before digging into the fries again herself. “Mm? And whatsch da plansh?”

Erica laughs a bit at this, covering her mouth so potato doesn’t do flying everywhere. Mittens takes the opportunity to sneak a little paw back onto the table. You watch as she rummages around, hunting for her prey by touch. You slide a fry towards her, and she snatches it away.

“Well, I’m going to train up my team. Then, I’m going to clean the Rangers’ stables tonight in return for Math’s help tomorrow. Tomorrow morning we’ll head out and actually set up some bait at the Rangers’ utility tower that leads off of the main power line running to the compound. My question is,” you take a sip of soda, “are either of you interested in coming along? Let it be known, though, that anyone that wants a Scyther has to help me clean the stables.”

“…Or maybe I’ll just get Nick to help. His attitude was shitty enough. We’ll see. But, yeah: who’s coming?”

Both of them go a little quiet at that, Dani looking at Erica who seems to bite her lip nervously. Dani gives her a “go on,” motion.
“Well, Grey… uh…” Erica starts twiddling her thumbs and inspecting her hands awfully closely. “I’m actually pretty scared by the idea. You… have helped me out a lot, though. I’d… uh, do anything for you.” You catch her eyes kind of accidentally, but she quickly looks away and then nervously laughs a bit

“Youknow for youguys! You helped me a lot!” You and Dani both smile at her warmly.

“It was nothing. Glad to have helped you, right, Dani?”

>cont.

“Of course!” Dani gives her a bit of a side hug, and Erica leans into it.

The curly-haired girl clears her throat, then continues. “So, yeah… It’s really intimidating, and I’m worried about my ability to really help. Also, I need to get my first badge: I’m already 2 weeks behind.” You nod at that, understandingly.

“I’d like to ask if maybe I could actually just forge on ahead..? I could let you guys know what the gym is like, I guess.”

Dani does pipe up, though. “I’ll definitely come and help, though. I don’t want a dead boyfriend!”

Learn gravity to keep these scyther grounded. Should also mess with their combat ability, they're not likely to be used to being unable to flit around.
>Apollo
Maybe train heatwave/overheat, get it higher so that we can use it more effectively in an emergency
>Nereid
Watersport, incase we need to put out large scale forest fires by following emergency overheat. The rest of her attacks right now seem decently up to scratch

He's got a decent water pulse, that should be long range and AoE enough. Plus it can also induce confusion. I don't see the point in going for bubblebeam at this stage.

If you're referring to the trapinches, then fret not, I noticed those already. If you're referring to the stains on the scythes then yeah, noticed that too, but I maintain that it's a wasted opportunity not to do away with the paint can and leave it to the imagination to deduce where the red might have come from.

>Speed and monkey wrench
>Speed
That's just not how his line works. With monkey wrench you can have him blast with waterpulse or watergun at range and then counter attack with monkeywrench when getting attacked at close range
>>
>>36587805
I do like the idea of working and training with Nick. If we're going to have a multiple trainer team, we should at least practice working together before going into danger.

Nah, Shelly has the shell. Apollo doesn't have fantastic defense so he's going to be using the speed to get in and firefang where possible.

>>36587900
>Water vs scyther
It'll do as much as any other normally effective attack.

On that note, since they're half flying ice is super effective. Maybe train nereid to freeze her water somehow?
>>
>>36587912
But he needs at least some speed work...and the defensive power in the world doesn't help if your opponent just goes around you...
>>
>>36587934
Which is why he water pulses the bejeesus outta them before hand.
>>
With current stats where they are and the upcoming training, this is what your options for moves to learn are looking like:

>Mittens: Gravity if you roll really well and push her very hard in training; otherwise magic leaf, barrier, magic coat, fake out, psyshock, zen headbutt or helping hand

>Apollo: Flare blitz if you roll really well and push him very hard; otherwise trailblazer, crunch, or quick attack

>Nereid: Pursuit, headbutt if you roll pretty well, swift, or bubblebeam

>Sheldon: Aqua pulse is close range; tail smack, bubblebeam, bite

If you guys talk about some sort of niche you want to fill with a pokemon or mention a move I can see about working it in.
>>
>>36587932
>Nah, Shelly has the shell. Apollo doesn't have fantastic defense so he's going to be using the speed to get in and firefang where possible.
Right...which is why I suggested training Apollos speed, what I'm saying is why not stick to using Sheldon more defensively...

Also why I suggested work on Silvermist it seems to have ice traits...

Sheldon can now use water pulse on land. You will still have to roll for general level of success, like with every attack, but he does not need a crit to use it.

>>36588036
>Can we not train Shelly to be extra good at monkey wrench then?
You can focus on his defensive capabilities, yes. this would include monkey wrench. You can still teach him tail smack, though.

Every Pokemon gets "stats+" and "learn 1 move" per "round" of intense training so long as they meet the prerequisities for the move. For example, Apollo can't master over heat right now. It's going to take a lot more time, and even then it will still tire him some. He can use it, though.

>>
>>36588175
Helping hand could be great as a way to maximise overheats complete rape of everything in a mile wide radius but that's going to be our PANIC fallback. Since it sets the forest on FIRE.

I think Mittens would be best suited to going on the offensive with either super high damage psychic attacks like psyshock or spreading the mindwaffles with confusion.

Not sure how bugs would react under confusion though, they're probably instinct based enough that even when confused they'd continue to attack somewhat effectively.

Thus I vote psyshock

Watch all this worrying be for nothing when all we get is a sick Sycther left behind by the pack and Apollo one-shots it...

I'm going to need everyone to respond to this post with their vote so I can get an accurate count.

Now here's the other important question:
Who do we box after bagging the Scyther?

Fletchling imo or nereid
>>
>>36588646
I always did think it was going to be Nereid.

It said it wasn't really interested in battlan anyways.

Alright, cool.

Now the other two.

STAB, both fire and flying are same x2 effectiveness
>Rollout
rock is x4 damage vs scyther, ground moves don't affect them unless gravity succeeds..
>>
>>36588757
>Wing Attack
Fire bomb would be interesting, but Fletchling is still only normal-type for now.

>Roll out
>>
>>36588851
But he put it as an option...surely he wouldn't toy with us like that...right?...plus I kinda wanna keep Phoenicia at a distance from the Scyther, considering her size, newbie status, and recent injury...
>>
>>36588897
I'd have thought firebomb was a physical move wherein it lights itself and crashes into them. Like a divebomb, but on fire.
>>
>>36588897
1. Bomb would likely be close 2 she has ember.
>>
Wing attack and rollout have it.

>>36588897
Oh no. You're flying into the swarm, now with your STAB! MWHAHAHA
>>
>>36588917
See I thought of it as like and aerial strike style swooping ember...

This birds gonna forever be in a sate of PTSD fear...

“Of course that’s fine, Erica.” She looks up at that and, seeing your smile, replaces her nervous frown with a smile. “You should be careful, though; maybe have someone go with you? Also, if you wait a day or so Dani and I can go with you.”

Erica nods her head at that. “Yeah, that’s true… I was hoping that I could help you guys if you knew what the gym was like, though. You know, firsthand account and all that.”

Dani finishes polishing off the French fries, then adds that “well, don’t they change them between Sorts anyways…?”

The three of you consider that, talking about what the gym may be like and how similar it could be between your different sorts. Regardless, Erica decides on calling and scheduling an appointment with the leader for her challenge. You and Dani make a note to do that tonight as well. Perhaps while training.

Feeling a growl run through your stomach, you decide eating to be the first concern you should address right now. You stand up and motion for Mittens to follow you; she does, the promise of more fries all the convincing she needs.

That’s when you notice something… different about her.

You kneel down and give Mittens a good, hard look. You start at her legs, working your way over her pudgy little tummy, her face…

“Mittens? Are your ears a different color?” You reach out, taking the tips of her ears between your thumbs and index fingers. “Yeah! They’re turning white! Would you look at this!”

You stand back, looking at your little Espurr who, for her part, is looking mightily confused. You chuckle, calling over Dani to get a good look at your growing Espurr. "Ya know, giving it a second look… She’s taller, too. Maybe even a bit leaner."

“Man, do Espurr always grow this fast…?”

>>
>>36589412
Aww Mittens is evolving.
>>

Dani shrugs and shakes her head. “I… I don’t know, Grey. I guess it’s the training and medical attention?” You nod at that, and then take out Sheldon and Nereid. You give them both a look over and, sure enough, Sheldon’s tail is… a bit different. And he’s starting to grow tufts on his ears, maybe. The slightest nubs. Nereid’s tails look longer, and she seems a bit taller, maybe? You’re not sure how she has changed.

Thinking back on it, you know that the necessary time dilation for MedCenter procedures and Pokeball healing have this effect in theory… but seeing it in practice is amazing! Your little Pokemon are growing up, right before your eyes.

“I’ll have to start scrapbooking…” You mumble, hand to your cheek as you look over your starter once more.

“What was that, Grey?”

“Mm? Nothing, Dani. Nothing at all.” You head for the food vendor, thoughts on your growing “family” of a team running through your mind. Mittens and Nereid shuffle along next to you, Mittens with her two-legged waddle and Nereid in a bounding gallop.

Sheldon brings up the rear with a gurgling-sprint.

Thank you for playing, guys! Before you leave, would everyone please

>Roll 3d100

for training? Not much happened today, but we've gotten past the stuff in the way of hunting Scythers. I will be running next week, probably only once for the week. I have to take a break. Hope everyone had fun! Post any questions or criticism you have!

Is their growing up a sign that they are getting stronger? or was it just them getting healed?

That went rather well.
>>
>>36589564
Well they're growing up, so they're maturing, slowly evolving. The healing thing is that there is a noticeable difference after they're finished healing because the process accelerates time for them so that they heal in a much faster time frame from our perspective. This means they have time to grow during it

Thanks for the fun Herald...I'll definitely be keeping an eye out for the thread...

So pokemon in this quest won't flash evolve but grow into it over time right? Cool.
