Welcome to Academy City. The time is evening, the weather is fine, and the date is December 22.

You are Kyril Torikov, Academy City’s prototype weapon against Code M. You were also having dinner with your ex-girlfriend. That involved a very long story where you were pronounced dead at least twice. It was complicated, really. Asuka found your file, read it, and thought it all quite quaint. You on the other hand heard of her extracurricular exploits. Her trip to France and how she, and the rest, befriended the infamous Lupin IV was recounted with great relish. She also spoke of Teacher, the one you had no information. Sagara apparently learned at very feet. Asuka was rather tight-lipped regarding what the others were up to but you had a pretty good idea. They were up to no good.

That was a bit of a problem. Technically speaking, you were a part of Judgement, the student-based law enforcement organisation. The last time you tried to defy the city ended you’re your death, and then resurrection. You didn’t want to go through that whole mess all over again. There were no doubt safeguards in place in the event that you went ‘rogue’. She hadn’t broached the subject yet and you weren’t going bring it up either. Morally flexible or not, it was still an uncomfortable subject. Instead, your conversation veered in to something else. The subject was,

Family was important, or you had felt it important. Asuka was not the only person in your life, past or present. There was a conversation from your past that you recalled. It was about siblings. You were a Child Error, an orphan. Siblings were not so because they were related to you by blood. They were so simply because you deemed it so. It was why you were curious as to what Mishka was up to. Asuka was happy to oblige.

“Ah yes, your younger sister,” her tone was quite relaxed, “I’m sure you would be proud of what she has become.”

You tried to mask your impatience with curiosity.

“She is safe, and is relatively content. Beyond that? I am not sure I can say,” Asuka continued, “I have become more pensive as of late and I confess, I did wonder what went on in her head. Perhaps she held on to the belief that you were alive. Maybe her cheery demeanour and obsession with video games is a mask or a symptom of something worse. I do know that she would be happy to know that you are alive. As will Sparky, and the other 9000 or so little sisters of yours.”

Butterflies took flight in your stomach.

“You seem ill,” Asuka seemed amused at your discomfort, “Perhaps I shall let your sisters find out themselves?”

“Maybe,” you managed.

“Perhaps if you would perform a favour for me I shall see it that you will not die at their hands?”

That sounded very tempting.

“It is quite simple,” she gestured to your looted Walther, “I require this firearm to be placed in an Anti-Skill evidence room.”

You had several ideas of why she wanted it done.

“Let me assure you, Sagara will not be reclaiming it, or even using it in the future.”

That threw you for a loop. Still you had accepted and that was all she wanted you to do. It didn’t seem hard, or even remotely illegal, now that you thought about it. You hoped it would stay that way, even after Asuka had retired for the night.

The time is morning, the weather is clear, and the date is now December 23.

Somehow, you weren’t surprised at all that you would have work waiting for you the moment you were awake. This too was a simple job. The Code M artefact that you had secured a day or two ago was being moved to a more secure location. No doubt some academic or another wanted to study the shield. That or it was going to be kept under lock and key permanently. There was even a precise timetable, despite how short notice the move had been. Your job was simply to make sure no Code M makes an attempt at it, even though you were sure there were a few.

The question then, at that point, was where you wanted to be as the artefact was transported. There were merits with travelling directly with the convoy but that was just begging to be attacked. Nayuta had also suggested a long range, marksman position. It was well out of danger but not too far out that it made shots difficult. Ben-jii was going to tail the convoy separately in his car and he had room for you to ride shotgun. You certainly were spoiled for choice.

You decided to accompany the convoy. It was best to be on hand with ten, or in this case, one, than absent a thousand, or so the saying went. The convoy was really just three trucks. Anti-Skill was trying to be low key about it and it wasn’t an unusual sight. There was minimal protection too. Two in uniform in the cabin with two powersuits in the back in case things turned south. Nearby Anti-Skill patrols had been arranged beforehand so that help was never too far away. Ben-jii was also shadowing the convoy in a parallel street in his car. The destination was a drop-off point in School District 7, after which your services would no longer be required. It wasn’t too far a distance but an attack was expected.

You were assigned to the lead truck, hoping that you’d be able to spot out any potential Code M before they became a problem. The radio was mostly silent, though Ben-jii was complaining about his car’s broken radio for a bit. It was when you coming up to a park that something happened. A football went flying across the street in front of the convoy. It was to be expected that a child would soon chase after it, unmindful of the several ton trucks on the road. The driver slowed only slightly, looking at you for a decision. There were no signs of Code M, as far as your filter was concerned so it was best that,

There didn’t seem to be a point in slowing down, or even stopping. Even if the football was an improvised explosive device, then stopping would have been the last thing you should be doing. The driver did appropriate honked his horn. Both as a signal for the convoy to continue and to warn off any stray children that may decide to suddenly cross the road. There was nothing of note the rest of the way.

By the time you got to a drop off point, another Anti-Skill office, you were relieved, perhaps that it your job was more or less over. There was going to be a hand off, but it wasn’t like you needed to be there. It was now that you remembered Asuka’s favour and made to submit the handgun you had taken from Sagara to the evidence room. No one made a fuss about it. Without any further responsibilities, you contemplated what you were going to do with your free time.

That thought however was abruptly halted when an explosion went off just outside the building. You could hear it, even feel it slightly as the rumbling continued and various officers drew weapons. Gun shots were heard, and soon enough you had detected a fire fight, both going on outside, and strangely, inside the building. Radio traffic was rather busy, but you gathered that this may be an attempt to secure the artefact by unknown Code M elements. You drew your own gun and decided to,

An external attack was something that could be expected. Anti-Skill should have no problem there. It was the internal struggle which had you on edge. The thought that it was an inside job was unsettling. A quick check confirmed that the artefact was indeed secure and there were nothing suspicious nearby. The ruckus, as you had discovered was in the holding cells. Records indicated that there had been only one arrest today, only this morning in fact. There hadn’t been time to transfer him to the Reformatory quite yet. That was probably why only two officers had been sent in to make sure the prisoner remained in his cell. With the fire fight outside growing in intensity, you think it was probably all they could spare.

They should have spared more. The cell door had been blown open, no doubt a shaped charge. On the floor were the two officers, both unconscious. The weapons discharge had been theirs. The prisoner had his back to you but you already knew who it was as you brought up your gun. He was in the process of securing something around his head before he turned around.

“We really have to stop meeting like this, you and I,” Sagara said.

He was talking like he didn’t know you. Maybe he didn’t. Asuka wasn’t exactly obliged to tell him but you would have thought he’d be the first to know. CADRE calmly noted that he seemingly took care of two Anti-Skill officers without a weapon himself. Granted it was a small corridor but there had been gunshots.

If he was going to pretend he didn’t know who you actually were then you were going to do the same. There was no way to determine who could have been watching, or even listening in. Thus you decided it was better to not take any chances.

“I’ll buy you a drink later,” you waved him to another cell, “Now get in that cell.”

Sagara shrugged and opened the cell door.

“Oh, and in case you were wondering,” he stopped at the threshold, “I was the distraction.”

If you wanted an elaboration, you would have to get one another time. The door of the cell slid shut and clicked in to the locked mode. It was probably a bad idea to reopen the door. The sound of gun fire started to die down. Quickly making sure that the two officers sent down to deal with Sagara were still alive, you proceeded back to the where the artefact was kept. It was now gone. The door and other associated protections had been violently destroyed.

As you moved closer to the front entrance the gun fire died down completely. It left only moaning wounded and some corpses. Ben-jii was trying to tend to as many as he could as more and more medical personnel rushed to the scene. It looked right out of a warzone.

“Mortar attack,” Ben-jii explained without looking up, “Then guns jury-rigged to improvised frames and controlled remotely. Someone wants Aias the Unconquered bad and I don’t think its Code M. The thief, whoever it was, is taking it back in the direction of the tenth. I’d go with you but I need to stabilise these guys first.”

Since it wasn’t Code M you decided to go on ahead. Well, Ben-jii had figured the odds were good that Code M wasn’t responsible. That was good enough for you. Ben-jii handed over the keys to his cars.

“Try not to crash it alright?” he had said in parting.

You didn’t tell him had two traffic violations on record.

It was Nayuta that called you as you drove your way down to School District 10.

“Whoa nii-chan, you’re just charging in without a plan?” she asked.

“I have a plan,” you answered, “I need camera footage, or anything you have, we’ll go from there.”

You really wished Ben-jii had installed a siren. The roar of a V8 couldn’t quite compare in the telling-people-to-get-out-of-your-way department. Hopefully those small scrapes could just be painted over.

“We lost them in the Strange and you’re going in alone nii-chan,” she said, “Didn’t you learn about the buddy system? I mean even you went in yesterday with your girlfriend and all.”

You almost brought the car to a screeching halt. As it was, you just ran a red light.

“If you’re going in, I’m going with you.”

You wanted to argue that she was wasting precious time.

“And if you’re good, I’ll bring toys,” she added cheerfully.

Then she cut the call. It probably meant she was bringing either a bigger gun, or a weapon of some kind. You weren’t sure, but the more time you waited, the more time the thief had to give you the slip. Nayuta didn’t explicitly tell you to wait for her though. You even had an idea of where to start searching so it wasn’t like you were going in completely blind.

You parked the car as close to the edge of the district as you dared. School District 10 seemed like the kind of place you didn’t park a car in and leave for a bit. Chances were good it’d disappear in the hour. If anything, it was Nayuta’s promise of toys that had you waiting for her. Thugs held no menace for you but your ammunition was finite. You only had three mags. Thankfully it only took her fifteen minutes. It’d look suspicious for a girl her age, with a conspicuous backpack no less, climbing in to Ben-jii’s Camaro with a tribally tricked out interior, so you met her outside.

“Wai, nii-chan actually waited for me,” Nayuta exclaimed exaggeratedly.

You simply held out your arm. Recognising the gesture, she rummaged in her backpack before pulling out a Toy Soldier. At a glance, CADRE could already tell you about the disparaging names that the weapon was given online. Belgian Waffle Maker didn’t sound worse that Toy Soldier.

“Here, should be able to sync to your helmet just fine,” she fiddled with it before handing it over, “Sorry for making you wait, hope the trail didn’t grow cold in the mean time.”

You hefted the rifle with ease, setting the sling to your preference. As you did, your helmet’s AR display added an ammunition counter and a crosshair. It almost felt like a game.

“We should start by tracing their path, and investigating their last known location,” Nayuta suggested.

You had another idea though. It involved asking Kyouko some questions.

“I know someone that could help,” you said.

“Eh? Nii-chan, you’re not doing anything bad on the side are you?” Nayuta asked.

“No.”

“Good, I hate reprogramming spaghetti code,” she smiled.

You had no retort for that so you simply led her deeper in to the district. The both of you kept your Judgement armband on. It didn’t look like anyone was going to give you trouble, not with the rather obvious assault rifle in your arms.

“What about you?” you wondered about her own offensive capabilities.

“Don’t worry about me nii-chan, if I can’t fight them I can always use my female charm,” was her answer.

It wasn’t hard to find your way back to the same building you visited yesterday. The room wasn’t any different. The desks were still staffed with hoodlums and Kyouko still sat on her throne. Unlike yesterday, she was actually reading a piece of paper.

“Back already? What’s it this time Pops?” Kyouko looked in your direction, “And who’s the Chibi? A bit young to PMS, or even for you. Really, what would Kuso say?”

She probably thought she was clever. Nayuta didn’t look cowed and even if she wanted to snap at Kyouko, she had deigned to follow your lead.

“I’m looking for someone.”

“We’re all looking for someone,” she stretched, “Found God yet? I want him to deliver me from evil.”

“Someone stole a Code M artefact from Anti-Skill, I’m here to take it back.”

Kyouko turned to one of the thugs.

“Oi Bert, you see any Code M hangin around here?”

“No ma’am,” one of the thugs answered.

A beat followed as she glared at him.

“What’s a Code M ma’am?”

She rolled her eyes in your direction.

“Don’t answer that, that’s classified information,” Nayuta finally spoke.

Her tone was all serious.

“You know what it is,” was your answer.

Kyouko bristled again.

“Shoulda known,” she hissed, “Shit’s bad business. I may know somebody, here’s the address. Try to keep the building intact.”

With the hastily scribbled directions in hand you managed to find the apartment.

“Mou, nii-chan, if you knew the Slumlord of the Strange, you should have told me,” Nayuta faked her pout, “Give me warning next time okay?”

“What were you going to do if I told you?”

“I, uh, I don’t know,” she seemed to stumble.

You shrugged to signal the end of the conversation. That was all you needed to know about the Kyouko’s legal situation. She wasn’t actually guilty of any crime. The Anti-Skill database had listed as such. It was strange. Either Kyouko went legit or was just damn good at looking like she had. Either way, you had a different problem at hand.

The apartment door was locked. That was a given, but you detected a heat source and sounds of someone living on the other side of the door. It wasn’t that hard a problem to figure out though. Now, what do?

“Stack up, bang and clear,” you ordered.

Despite technically being your immediate superior, Nayuta produced a flashbang and breaching charges from her backpack. You didn’t question why, not after she had produced your assault rifle the same way. The breaching charge was rather muted, even on your end so you had to imagine the occupant’s surprise when the flashbang followed. It registered as a loud ping through your helmet but by then you were already through, assault rifle up and at the ready.

Turns out, there was only one occupant. It was a familiar face. Ilija may have been scared out of her wits and disoriented but she complied nonetheless. In the corner of the room, next to the couch, was Aias the Unconquered. The shield glowed with the same yellow aura as Nayuta moved to secure the girl. There were many questions running through your mind at the moment.

“That was an interesting story you sold Anti-Skill nee-chan,” Nayuta remarked, “I wonder how you’ll get yourself out of this one.”

“No please, it’s a family heirloom,” Ilija was tearful, “It’s all I have left.”

You didn’t know which part of her statement was a lie. It was that kind of half-truth.

“Uh huh,” Nayuta didn’t really care, “Is there anything else you’d like to say in your defence?”

“Uh, yes.”

Nayuta had only managed to cuff only one wrist before she flew backwards. CADRE registered the impact of a 12.7mm Anti-Material round.

“You just walked in to a trap.”

Gone was the fearful girl, replaced by a cold mask. It wasn’t one of confidence but it still spoke of certainty. The attack didn’t stop there, and if you hadn’t dived for cover the next few rounds would have caught you too. Ilija was scrambling for the shield like you scrambled for cover. Nayuta was alive, albeit stunned, since she was still moving. You probably weren’t the only cyborg around you conclude. That was when CADRE kicked in, evaluating the situation and the objectives as fast as possible. Time slowed as you made the decision to go after the shield. Another shot struck the ground next to you but the concrete wall was crumbling. Soon the shooter would have a clear shot and you wouldn’t be able to count on the wall spoiling ballistics. Yes, time to go for the shield and to trust that it’s nature as a Code M artefact would allow it to withstand armour piercing bullets.

It was an abnormally large shield, almost as big as you were. It wasn’t perfectly round and had a centre grip. The business end was wrapped in hide and was bronze-rimmed despite the wooden construction. This, you noted, while casually throwing Ilija, the supposed owner of the shield on her couch. More bullets came. To your relief, the shield held against them as you secure Nayuta. Your next priority was to escape the kill zone, both inside and outside.

“Hey kid,” Ben-jii’s voice entered your helmet, “What’d you do to my car.

“Benjamin I need extraction now,” you replied.

“Be there in a minute,” Ben-jii registered your tone.

The gun fire had died down, but only because of the need to reload you assumed. It gave you time to think of your next course of action. Namely, how you were going to get out of the building that a sniper had on overwatch. The front door was obvious but you had the shield so it was probably risk free. That said you wouldn’t fancy a fight in the corridors while encumbered with both shield and Nayuta. The only other option, in your experience, was the window. CADRE estimated a 65% of not breaking anything important on the way down. As the seconds ticked up closer to a minute, the familiar sound of a V8 approached.

There wasn’t time to waste, the quicker you could get to Ben-jii’s car the better. It was why you held Nayuta in one arm, despite her weak protests and mild disorientation, and the shield in the other. As best you could, you braced the shield in front and smashed your way out of the window. More shots landed around you but it was more a last ditch effort to try and hit you than an actual aimed attack. You even managed to locate the shooter’s position and radioed in for more reinforcement if it were possible. The downside, as you fell, was that Ben-jii’s car was still nowhere to be seen, even if you could hear it close in on your position.

That lasted only long enough to fall two storeys, with another two more to go. Ben-jii’s car emerged from the asphalt like a breaching whale. It was wreathed in smoke and broken bits of concrete. As it reached the apex, you fell through the roof and landed in the rear passenger seats. The car, which had been impossibly navigating through concrete, was as solid as you remembered. A distant thought reminded you that Ben-jii was still Code M and the whole damn interior was lit up yellow. The landed jostled you and the items in your arms.

“Nii-chan, don’t stop the Earth’s rotation,” Nayuta muttered.

You could see Ben-jii’s grin in the rear-view mirror. The kicker was you were just in time for lunch.

You are Fujimoto Shiro, the best Magic Troubleshooter in the World. You also really wished people in the business would stop calling you that. With the world at war, you’ve had your work cut out for you. Slipping in to a warzone to remove one specific target amongst a sea of civilians and military personnel on alert for foreign spies was tricky. It wasn’t impossible, or else you wouldn’t have been called the best, just tricky. Thankfully, your current mark wasn’t living in an active combat zone. All you had was a picture. Blue eyes, and long white-hair. It reminded you of one of your more recent marks. You had to wonder if there was a pattern here. You shook the thought away as a waste of time and stepped out of the Port of Manila.

The Philippines was a co-belligerent to the continuation of the Chinese Civil War. It all started with the uprising in Hong Kong that then spilled over to Taiwan. It wasn’t obvious to the public, but the Russian Federation definitely had an interest, if not a hand in it. For all you knew, it was all part of their plan to further destabilise the region. You suppose that’s why all eleven ASEAN countries geared up for war. They were going to stabilise the region, or try at least.

What the Philippines became, however, was a staging post. That meant security was extra tight and barely anyone had a helpful bit of advice for a Japanese tourist. If Junko were here, she’d have them wrapped around her pinky already but alas. Your elder sister had elected to stay with her daughter when war broke out, which was fair. She was the face first and foremost, and a trigger person second. Well, she was more of a sellsword, but that was beside the point. The point was that you had to do your own legwork. You had two options in that regard.

The Philippines was also in a rare and wondrous position, religiously speaking. It was one of the only two predominantly Christian nations within Asia. After all, when you said the Philippines was a staging post, you didn’t mean only for the Taiwanese Intervention Forces. Despite the cultural differences of having a Roman Catholic housing both Orthodoxies and Protestants, the end goal was important enough for said enmity to be set aside. Here, they were Crusaders, brothers of the faith, united against a common foe. You couldn’t help but feel sorry for some of them. It was why you weren’t going to deal with them. You didn’t have the time to waste on their ideological rants and sermons. Nope, you were sticking the tried and true drinking establishments of dubious nature. Alcohol always had a habit of loosening lips.

You weren’t surprised when you found an establishment that was frequented by the most famous security company in the business. War was their business and business was good. That also made them more liable to talk. After all, when all was said and done, their only loyalty was to their contract. Whatever happened outside the scope of it was not their problem. That was good for you, since you managed to narrow down the location of the target. It was an old military base that had be long decommissioned and left to rot on an island called Alimango. Further questioning revealed that locals have begun to treat the island with a considerable amount of superstition. Tales of dogs barking and local exorcists never returning for their investigations were widespread. It looks like a hardened target and you had just the answer for that. Your answer was,

The locals, that is, the bartender, had warned against you personally investigating. The mercs on the other hand were curious, but only in the potential profit in looting said base. They were willing to finance your “survey” as long as all claims to war materiel would be yielded to them. It was a reasonable offer but you turned them down. What you were about to would probably require their deaths, and their deaths of their families to maintain the secrecy of your art. It was rather redundant to say that you were a hyper-specialised apex predator that preyed exclusively on magicians. Thus your magic was good for one thing and one thing only, killing. It was far too late to regret not learning how to properly hypnotise people now. The suppressor was your preferred silencer.

Your magic had always tied back to Anubis, your sword and the God of Death. It was fortuitous that Death was such as vast domain. If anyone ever encountered you and survived their chances of survival were exactly the same as never having met you. What few people seemed to realise was that not all your spells were about dealing death. Some of your spells were about dealing with death. Knowing a person’s last thoughts, dredging up history from the deceased, even the phonebooks of the dead were useful.

That was probably how you figured this job was going to be far from easy. The island was devoid of any human remains. The discovery that the base was missile base made it even more unsettling. What you found were blue pus and cries in the distance. It was a cry,

You were wary now, even as you stalked closer to the sound. It was clearly one of battle even though there was the occasional cry for help. The combatants that you could make out were a girl, your target, and, something. You couldn’t quite make it out. It was a distortion of light, being bent at unnatural angles, resulting in a shimmer every now and then. In the girl’s hand was a sword. It was an impossible sword. After all, only one person you knew wielded that sword. Each time she swung, she cut through the shimmering haze, spilling blue ichor. That solved one mystery, you thought. That begged the questions, who was this girl and what was she doing with The Dean?

“Oh, thank goodness,” the girl spoke Japanese, “I could use a little help here jii-san.”

Her register and dialect were slightly off however. You couldn’t quite put a finger on it either. Still, you had come here to do a job.

“Please don’t try it, you wouldn’t last a second alone against the Dogs,” she continued, “Do you mind passing me some of that C4 you keep in your coat?”

Oh you were going to pass her some C4 alright. You had set the timer and tossed it her way. It was as soon as you did that the “Dogs” were revealed. Light acted unnaturally on their bony form, halfway between transparency and reflection. They were the size of a Labrador, but beyond that, they were unnatural. As they turned their attention to you, dread filled your very soul.

“I said some, not all,” your target was berating you as she scooped up the plastic explosive.

She pinched some for herself before tossing it back to you, sans detonator. And like that, the “Dogs” that were hounding her dropped out of the visible spectrum once again. They weren’t gone, just discourage from pursuit. They clung tightly around the both of you as you wondered what the hell just happened.

Interlude End.
