>Previously in Wulin Hero Quest
>After making it through the Preliminaries with surprising ease, Sky was moved to the inside of Yuan Manor with the entourages of the hopefuls of the major factions by himself. Having spoken with Brother Genshu and Ao Zhuzheng first, he later met with Junzi Society's quietly intelligent Yang Meilin and Wudang Sect's remarkably nice Ma Huizhong. Approaching the Heaven Sword Alliance's Xiao Jian, he was abruptly (and somewhat rudely) warned away from continuing the tournament any further, as he will be putting himself in great danger.

"I advise you to leave, Hero Tiankong," the young man says, without opening his eyes. "This tournament will be extremely dangerous. More importantly it's an almost entirely a meaningless title, and a political ploy by our host. It would be senseless of you to risk your life over something so trivial as a title, especially given you show exceptional talent and promise."

You pause, frowning at his direct method of address.

"....thanks, but I've got my own reasons for being here and unfortunately I can't back out at this point if I want to follow through with them," you say.

You are finding your sense of humor is not nearly as ready to be deployed around this guy.

"It seems we have something in common then," he mutters, turning towards you, opening his eyes and placing the tip of his sheathed sword on the tile floor, both hands on the pommel.

"I assume you had a specific reason for approaching me? These fights will not be easy and concentration is important. I would assume you'd want your own privacy respected as well, in fact."

You keep frowning.

"I thought you looked kind of bored. Thought you might want to talk to someone who isn't kissing your ass like the guys over there always seem to be," you say, nodding at the seven Heaven Sword Alliance elders who came with Xiao Jian.

"Your attempts at humor are an unnecessary gesture. I do not require 'icebreakers' in conversation. My elders are honorable men who have earned their place in the Jianghu, and I'd prefer them not insulted," he says, but he doesn't sound angry.

He doesn't sound ANYTHING.

"I wasn't trying to be funny," you say as frankly as you can manage.

"Your wit does you credit, but it's misplaced in conversation. Honored Brother Genshu is much the same way I think. I should hope you rise to the heights he has, as you show impressive skills for one unaffiliated with any known faction."

I was thinking, why don't we share our tale with brother gensho and ask if he recognizes our inner style? he knows all 72 styles, surely he has heard of ours. or if not, he would probably become curious enough to ask about it among the older shaolin

"...thanks. Nice sword," you say, changing the subject.

The one in the middle right of the pic.

"Your attempts to change subjects are somewhat clumsy, but I must agree," he says, holding it out. It's blade is much wider then most jian swords, but it still seems to retain it's flexibility.

"Sword Heaven Castle's Unrivaled Sword," he says, giving you it's name. "It belonged to my father when he was younger. Thank you for complimenting it."

"...sorry for insulting your elders."

"Apology accepted."

"....."

"....."

"Yeah, I'm just gonna go," you say, bowing with a salute then leaving.

You go and lean against the far wall sighing. The guy is just way to hard to talk to.

"Met Xiao Jian I see?" comes Genshu's voice RIGHT NEXT TO YOU....like always.

"BUDDAHSHITTINGDICKNIPPLES!" you say in surprise, babbling out the curse of random words. "Why can't you ever just WALK UP like a NORMAL PERSON?!"

"I was sitting right here the whole time," he says with a smile, legs folded and his right hand raised in meditative prayer.

I'm not entirely sure that Ironheart was recognizing us in particular. I think he might just have been interested to see there was an actual xia in the crowd of amateurs. He was looking around for threats, saw us, and focused on us because he could tell we actually had skills. Then we locked eyes and stared him down, and that impressed him. Him pointing us out to Tang Shijing was just him going "Hey, look, one of them is actually worth something."
>>
>>36605170
that seems likely but lets play it by ear with him

>>36605016

>>36605170
I'd be wary around Ironheart and company. They are local clans, and if anyone had any idea where our Ba might be, it would be the locals. These guys might be collaborators (in which case we may also need to punch some answers out of them, like a pinata).

"...yeah, I met Xiao Jian," you say, refusing to give Genshu the satisfaction of aggravating you further. "Must be a huge burden trying to walk around with that pole shoved up his ass all the time."

"I take it you didn't like him?"

"No."

"Hm. That's interesting. Why?"

"He's rude, has no respect when he talks to folks, has no patience for conversation, and doesn't seem to give a shit about manners either."

"That's funny," he says with a smile, still meditating.

"What is?"

"So you basically dislike him for the ways he's exactly like you then."

"What? Bullshit!" you say, offended.

"You're remarkably direct, have no patience for proper address, consistently disrespect authority, and every time you engage in conversation not somehow directly related to your goals you liberally sprinkle it with biting sarcasm. And you're rude."

"I'm not EXACTLY like that!" you protest.

"In what way have I stated are you different then?"

"....I'm funnier then he is?" you finish lamely.

"Indeed, I'm afraid Heaven Sword Castle's young master is not possessed of a developed sense of humor."

"See? Different!"

"Also, both of your lives are perpetually overshadowed by your fathers, there's that too."

"And jusy what the HELL do you know about my father?"

"You mentioned you were looking him and later mentioned he trained you and have shown that you were trained EXCEPTIONALLY well. I made an educated guess," he admits, shrugging

"....okay, it's a GOOD guess, but I still say I'm not much like that guy."

"So what's all this really about, Monk?" you ask, leaning against the wall and folding your arms, looking over the crowd. Yang Meilin and Ma Huizhong are laughing about something, while Hong Lan is glancing over at you occasionally while speaking with her sect.

"Ah, the Great Question! What does it all mean?"

"The TOURNAMENT."

"Oh that. I confess I do not know for certain," he says with a shrug.

"That's not the same as 'I have no idea', Monk," you point out.

"Quite. I will say that the tournament itself is likely about determining the title. However Yuan Shanlin's intentions are much vaguer. He's always been generous, friendly, and charismatic, especially for the people in Sichuan and Chengdu in particular."

"Isn't he a neutral party?"

"He's one of the Four Houses, yes. Four family-based clans, each in one direction, who are of middling size but good influence in their respective realms. All have famous leaders, and all cooperate when they are threatened as individuals."

"Why? Seems a little unusual from wgat I've learned."

"All four heads of the clans are sworn brothers and traveled the Jianghu when they were younger."

"Oh. So what's the Tang Clan's in on this then? They're strictly neutral."

"The Spiders of Sichuan always have clouded motivations and objectives I'm afraid. I won't even attempt to guess at them."

"Some help you are."

"Only the Buddah knows all, Hero Sky. Don't look now, but Lady Hong Lan is approaching," he says, nodding in the direction of the radiantly beautiful woman sauntering you way.

"Crap, I don't want to deal with another womaHEEEY!" you say as Hong Lan shows up, giving you the Wulin Salute...a little uh..lower on the bow then normal.

"I was just talking to-" you say, turning to the empty space in the wall where Genshu sat previously.

Why do you care about conversation control?
>>
>>36606692
In fact Sky frequently manipulates conversations. Notice how whenever he feels uncomfortable about a subject or doesn't feel like lying (since he's awful at it) he immediately deflects with sarcasm and humor?
So far only Genshu's able to see past the tactic because he's quite adept at it himself.

That's not manipulation in the least bit, that's just avoiding subjects.

Kinda. I like him though.
>>

Thing is, people like her never just take 'no' for an answer and go. By doing the unexpected (and let's face it, Wulin Sage wouldn't have Sky come off as blunt; the character is FAR too sarcastic for that), we win back a bit of control here. Even a bumpkin like Sky knows that if someone starts a conversation with, "Hey Handsome~" they're after something!

That said, I don't really mind too much, either way. Falling over himself in the face of a social attack would be in-character for Sky.
>>
>>36606836
ohh dont get me wrong i like Sky two but he is an ass; an ass i love
>>
I hope we have a nice long conversation here, there are so many things we can ask this girl.

Also she seems to be a sexy flirty womanly woman who clearly has more going on than is apparent due to unknown complicated circumstances, which can be pretty cool.
>>
>>36606894

"What? Why?" you say, thrown off a bit.

"Why not? You have no support, no clan, but lots of talent. With backing you could be hugely important in the Wulin one day, right? Why not let the Phoenix Society be your big, strong back?"

"I thought the Resplendent Phoenix Society only let in women?"

"Of course not, we have men in it too. Not many," she admits, "but not for lack of trying on our part. We get so bored all the time...,"

"No offense, but I try to stay out of secular matters,' you say. "You ladies seem a bit too involved there."

"So join and then don't bother with them!" she says with a sweet smile. "I'm sure we can think up all kinds of ways we can use you~"

"So you only want me for my body?" you say with a smirk.

She laughs. ACTUALLY laughs this time.

"Oh, you ARE funny. I like that. But seriously, you're saying there's nothing at all I have to offer you you can think of? I can only try so hard you know~" she says with a feigned pout.

Time to diffuse this. Obvious ploy to get our power on their side is obvious.

She's never going to talk to us as an equal, until we earn her respect. That won't happen, if she thinks she can play us like a flute and move us like a chess piece.

"You're already being a bit pushy. Maybe I don't find that attractive in women?" you smirk.

"I don't think you KNOW what you find attractive in women, do you Hero Sky?" she counters right back.

"Well...uh," you say, for once completely at a loss for words.

She was actually spot on there; you know when a woman is pretty, but beyond that?
You've never focused on anything but martial arts your whole life, you're lucky your dad even told you how sex works.

"Maybe we could help with that?" she says...and she's a bit closer now.

You feel nervous, edgy. Like you need to block or dodge because this feels like....wait.

This feels EXACTLY like fighting.
You prod, she deflects, she moves closer, she tests your defenses, looking for an opening or MAKING one if you can't find one naturally.

You think fast, latching onto your first counter-attack, trying to figure out anything about her to use.

"Ma Huizhong doesn't think very highly of you," you say suddenly, and she stops (so she WAS moving closer, it wasn't just your imagination) and withdraws slightly.

"Hero Hizhong's just paranoid. He seems to think anyone who isn't exactly like him is somehow up to something and isn't worth trusting," she explains with a shrug, trying to brush it off like it doesn't bother her.

But you caught her reaction before she could stop herself.

>>
>>36607463

"You certainly SEEM like you're up to something," you say in all honesty. "I'm just trying to figure out if it's as straightforward as it seems."

"How so?" she says, seeming amused.

"You want me because you see a skilled fighter you can apply to something else I'm guessing. Maybe it's more complicated then that, but I'm guessing that's the basics, right?"

"Is that so wrong? I promise I wouldn't mistreat you~" she says, fluttering her eyelashes.

"Pretty sure flirting with someone only to get something you want IS mistreating someone. Only difference is you're convincing them that they enjoy being mistreated in the meantime,"

"You're a bit cynical, aren't you? Can't someone just be happy in service to a cause, even if they don't particularly care what the cause is?"

"I dunno; why doesn't Duan Lei like you?" you say, completely shifting the conversation.

"I...what?" she says, and her face suddenly becomes an expressionless mask. She seems to you like a play actor who forgot her lines.

"That's two friends of mine now who say you're a bit shady, and I'm inclined to agree," you say with a sarcastic nod of your head.

Though if they hadn't told you earlier so she might have hoodwinked you there.

"I don't care what Duan Lei thinks. He has nothing to do with me or my family," she says almost mechanically.

"I never mentioned your family. Why did you?" you say with a raised eyebrow.

She shakes her head, backs off, and the smile returns. It's a bit less inviting this time though.
Now she looks to you more like a cat looking at a mouse.

"It's a shame Handsome. I thought we might be fast friends."

"Friends don't lie to each other and hide intentions with pretty words and skimpy clothes," you say, and your words mark an absolute finality in the conversation.

She gives a little sigh, and then walks away.

You gotta admit though, watching her go's almost as fun as watching her walk up. She makes walking a whole multi-dimensional visual exercise.
>>
>>36607854
She's definitely manipulative, though that's not automatically a bad thing.

What is a bad thing is that we don't know her goals or how chivalrous she is.

Plus, yeah, she's probably already got other suitors chasing after her, which would be trouble.

You shake you head, exhaling and walking back over to the table where food was, getting some more wine.

The Emei girl is near the table, helping herself to some food. It's not much, just a little bit.

"Hey could you-" you begin and she...squeaks like a kitten ("MEEP!") and backs off?

".....pass...the soup ladle?" you say finishing your sentence.

Great. Another crazy one.

"Oh! Um...yes, I can!" she says, smiling awkwardly.

"So...."

"Hm?"

"Are you going to?" you say, perhaps a bit more dryly this time.

"Oh! Yes, sorry, sorry!" she says, giving you the ladle and backing off with a bow.

"Thanks. I'm Tiankong, Sky," you say doing the salute.

She blushes, looks back and forth, as if for an escape route, and then takes a deep breath and returns the salute.

"A..Ai Zhu, Emei Sect!" she says firmly with a nod, mustering her courage.

"Okay, I get that you're really nervous, but why? I mean, I'm a little shaky here too, but you've got a sect backing you."

"I'm...I'm sorry, I've just never spoken to one before!"

"To one what?"

"A man!"

You stare, trying to process THAT bit of information.

"Okay...yeah, I could see how that might...make you a bit nervous," you admit slowly.

I mean you don't know all that much about women, but you TALKED to them before at least.

"I'm not nervous! Well, okay, I AM but I-EEEP!" she squeaks as she walks around the table and trips loudly on the carpet, dragging food off of it with her!

You rush, moving like the wind to catch it before it falls on her, holding a plate in each hand just before it falls, standing over her!

You glance over at the others in the room. Qiu Qiang and Xiao Jian are as aloof as before, but the others are looking over at you both, confused at the weird visual of her fallen on her rump with the rug tangled around her foot while you stand over her, awkwardly holding food plates.

The Emei Sect on the other hand just looks exasperated; they all appear to be sighing sadly or facepalming.

"Sorry...," she says, looking dejected and facing downward.

Ah shit.
She's gonna cry isn't she? You hate that.

"Oh, no harm done. Good reflex training!" you say with a chuckle placing the food onto the table.

You pick her up, easily haul her light body to her feet (she's much shorter then you), and brush her off, her arms held close and nervous unsure as to what you're doing at first.

"See? There. All better," you reassure, smiling as best you can.

She turns a different shade of red, backs off and mutters a "thank you".

"So you're a nun?" you say, changing the subject, and she shakes her head.

"Nope. Abbess Huran is, but we're not all nuns or anything. We have lots of Buddhist values and Daoist teachings. Ours is the first sect to combine both in history you know!" she says, happy to be informative.

You are now manually hearing all of Ai Zhu's lines as spoken by the English VA for Sasami in Tenchi Muyo.

You wonder how in the WORLD this awkward girl could possibly be a xia, let alone a hopeful for a Top Ten Young Hero.

"Okay, but there's no men on Mount Emei then?"

"Nope. Since we have SOME nuns and our Abbess is one, no men are allowed. We don't mind them though, there's lots of brave heroes in the Jianghu who are men!"

An older Emei sect girl walks over and stand over Ai Zhu.

"Greetings, Hero Sky. I am Li Ruyo, Zhu's elder sister," she says with a bow, shooing her off and telling her to go visit the others. Ai Zhu gives you a happy "bye" with an adorable smile and heads off.

"Thank you helping my Little Sister avoid further embarrassment. She's a little bit shaky; this is her first time off Mount Emei you see."

"Hey, will she be alright? These fights are gonna get rough, and she seems a little young to be-"

"Ai Zhu is eighteen years old," Ruyi clarifies.

Oh okay. Just....short and immature then.

Ruyi looks over you carefully and seems to make some kind of judgement.

"Ai Zhu is nervous, and perhaps even a little clumsy, but she is a remarkably proficient martial artist. Her parents were both skilled fighters and she has inherited much of their internal energy, as well enhanced it using our training methods."

"Having a good internal doesn't make her a good martial artist!" you protest with worry in your voice. "It also requires enough external kungu so-"

"She has a nearly eidetic memory. Everything she reads, sees, or watches she remembers," Ruyi elaborates. "She knew many of the initial forms of Emei Swordplay by heart when she was thirteen, and now can perform them better then I can even though I am five years her senior in age. She learns new forms so quickly that we have actually had to slow her teachings, so she doesn't practice forms that she doesn't yet have the internal energy to safely perform without injuring herself."

You're silent, caught off-guard by that.

"....what if she has to fight a man though?" you ask, and then Ruyi gets awkwardly nervous.

"I....ahhm....we're hoping we can teach her to get over that by watching combat!" she says with a nervous laugh.

"I could help out with that if you wanted? Friendly sparring before she has to fight a man?" you offer.

"I...you would?" she says, surprised.

"Yeah, sure. I mean, why not?"

"...and in return?"
>>
>>36609830
In return we get to spar with someone as good as you just described. It should be just as educational for us as her, if not more so.
>>

"How about not letting Iron Asshole over there fold her in half like a paper during their fight?" you suggest, pointing a thumb at the Iron Palm Sect Head.

>Interlude

Ruyi pondered the unknown xia's offer and terms and imagined:

>Qiu Qiang: "RRRAAAGH! QIANG SMAAAASH!"
>*obliterates her in a in a single earth-shattering blow, reducing her to a fine pink mist*

>Interlude End

"Your...terms are acceptable!" Ruyi says, shaky for some reason as she says it. "I must consult with my sisters, but I think they'll find it an agreeable offer at least."

"Glad to help. Hey, back there you made some kinda decision about me. What was it?"

She smiles. "I decided that any man who is considered a good man by Ma Huizhong must be chivalrous at heart."

"Yeah, he seems like a decent guy," you agree. "You know him or something?"

"Uh...no!" she says, blushing furiously and shaking her head. "That is...I've admired him! His uh...reputation for chivalry is well-known! I...I must go now!" she says, heading back to the Emei group a lot faster then she left it.
>>
>>36610149
She learns forms on the fly, Sky invents them on the fly.

Should be an interesting match.
>>
>>36610158
These Emei chicks needs to go out and talk with people more
>>
>>36610208
He can learn them easily, but not on the fly.
Her knowledge will allow her to adapt a bit, but not like Sky.

At the same time he can make shit up like a pro. While she can learn shit up like a pro.

It'll be fun.
>>
>>36610149
Indeed but she would actually be better at it then us.

Our only hope is our greater reserves. Especially with our current lack of technique.

I have a feeling she may prove a very dangerous person for us especially in the long term.
>>
>>36610158
Your interludes are always the best, Wulin Sage.

>>36610215
Agreed. Oh this will be fun for a number of reasons.

>>36610226
Yeah, honestly, out of all our enemies thus far, she seems like the most dangerous. See, I SAID she was no-where near as harmless as she seemed!

When we spar with her, we have to keep our internal arts a secret. She might just learn them... Plus, we can hit her with them in the actual tournament and secure a win.
>>
>>36610226
Then it's great we're going out of our way now to establish ourselves in the role of "helpful virtuous xia", isn't it?
>>
>>36610263
Internal arts are harder to learn by observation than External.
>>
>>36610263
I don't think she's quite that much bullshit.
>>
>>36610285
True. You can observe how a person moves their body without too much trouble. Observing how they move their chi is a lot harder, at least in the middle of a fight.

"I...was about to ask where the bathroom was," you finish, an obvious note of annoyance in your voice.

You look and notice even though he stands with his sect that they're all a good four or five feet from him.

"Xia, I am under no obligation to humor your death wish at this very moment by continuing to have this discussion with you. If you wish so very badly to feel the weight of my Iron Palm, then challenge me to a fight first when the tournament begins," he says, his voice not even bothering to conceal the threat behind it.

He sounds intelligent and well-spoken enough. He's no thug. He's just a prick.

While I don't like the thought of going up against someone who might strike to kill in the first fight, at the very least his Iron Palm is probably one of the better techniques for us to study since it doesn't mainly focus on weapons, the same as ours.

A lot of the xia here appear to mainly be weapon users, so I was a little concerned.

>A Short While Later

You walk out of the rest room (you found it after running down some servants after getting lost in the Manor) after reliving yourself and washing your hands clean, heading back to where the main hall is.

It doesn't take long; the maze of corridors and stairs (man, you don't even REMEMBER stairs getting here!) confuse you and get you even further lost, and you wander in the torchlit halls for something like thirty minutes.

"Dammit! Why do people even OWN houses this big? There's NOBODY IN HERE to enjoy them!" you say, eyes staring down the hallway you came from.

You suddenly feel a presence behind you. That Monk again, obviously.

"Well at least this time you let me know you were he-" you say turning around, and stopping in mid-sentence.

It's not Brother Genshu.
It's Ironheart.

"Nice performance out there today," he says, all seven feet of him looming over you like a mountain over a mouse.
His voice is surprisingly quiet, and it's hard to hear even in these silent halls.

You find yourself clenching your fist to stop yourself from shaking under his gaze. Your mouth his closed, but behind your lips you grit your teeth. Your feet shift slightly, ready to take a stance.

"Come see me after the tournament, Little Dragon. We have things to talk about."

And with that he turns and walks away, his gigantic form slowly disappearing into the dark hallway.

".....What?" is all you can manage in reply, long after he's gone.

>To Be Continued

Yet another point for the "Ba is Storm Dragon" theory. Certainly lots of people in the wulin call themselves dragons, so to refer to a young xia as "Little Dragon" isn't too weird. But with everything else...

Feng Renshu was a man, though. And given that there generally are less compunctions about the status of women in the jianghu than in conventional society, there wouldn't be much reason for our mother to disguise herself as a man. I'm not saying it couldn't happen, but it seems unlikely.
