Today is September 16th, UC 0084. You are Dominic O'Hara: a Commander in the Titans anti-terror organization, squadron leader of the “Grim Guard”, and Executive Officer of the Valkyrie, both of which now operate out of the converted Helium carrier Nagato.

In a rare moment of calm, nobody is trying to kill you at the moment.

Defrah is currently in surgery, with Artesia, the Doctor, Lucette, and Nina all doing their part to ensure that the artificial limb they've designed to replicate the normal function of her lost leg is successful. While you and your fellow officers wait tensely on word of the outcome, Audrey somehow managed to convince you to start singing to pass the time. After she lead a raucous chorus with Marida, Cynthia, and Diana, she passed the baton to Rossweisse. The normally quiet and reserved young woman sang a rowdy duet with Haman, which was fun enough to serve as a distraction.

Finally, eyes fall on you.

“Come on, Dominic,” Audrey presses. “Sing us something?”
>Sing something silly to lighten the mood, even if it means making a bit of an ass of yourself.
>Sing something poignant. You know they're all feeling it, so just put words to it.
>Sing that old Gaelic song your parents taught you, which you taught to Carya and Catrina in turn.

A love song, sad and sweet, in the ancient tongue of your distant forefathers: lamenting the separation of loved ones and longing for the day of their return. Your voice begins low and soft, but clear, almost a chant as the words roll off your tongue in sighing, lyrical strains. After a moment, Carrina adds her fair, almost delicate singing voice to your own, returning your own words to you with the same fluid grace... despite the fact that she doesn't actually speak the language. You figure she's abusing her abilities to listen to you sing the lines ahead of time.

Although they said you were flighty
That did not lessen my love for you,
You are in my dreams at night
And in the morning I ask for you

I gave you love and cannot deny
It's not love that lasts for a year or a season,
But a love that began when I was a child
And that will not wither until death takes me

My friends always tell me
I must forget your face,
But their counsel is unfathomable to me
As the returning of the tide

I am all too sad and tearful
Like a white swan that has been torn,
Sounding its death-call on a small, grassy loch,
Having been forsaken by all.

Or so it runs in English, in part, stripped of its inherent lyricism and poetry. By the time it runs out to its last, failing note, your quarters are quiet enough that you could hear a pin drop. Audrey leans back, her eyes shut, as does Rossweisse. The triplets, Marida, Cynthia, and Diana, sit in awkward silence: they seem confused and surprised at their own responses to what they've heard.

“What was that song about?” Haman finally asks quietly, breaking the silence.

You lean back flat on the bed, spreading out a little. “It was written by a high-born Scotswoman who fell in love with a fisherman, and waited long for his return every time he went to to sea. Wondering when and if she'd see him again. It was years of constant heartbreak.”

“And he didn't come back one day?” Haman guessed.

“Actually,” you correct her, propping yourself up on your elbows to face her, “they married just days after he heard her sing that song.”

Carrina's eye shifts tones back to a familiar blue as she lays across you with a satisfied smile. “It's going to work out,” Carya insists.

“I know that,” you reply calmly. “Doesn't make me NOT worry, but I know that nobody'd let Defrah down.”

“Yeah,” Carya agrees. “Like I said, it's going to work out.”

Thankfully, it isn't long before Artesia steps through the door to your quarters. Even better... she's got a tired smile on her face.

“The prosthesis took,” she announces. “Miss Kar is resting for now, but it looks like the procedure was a complete success.”

“Hey, lemme up real quick,” you tell Carya.

She shakes her head as she rolls off you. “She's still asleep, right?”

“Karen's not,” you remind her. “She's too stubborn to admit she's worried about Defrah. I'll take her the news, got something to talk to her about anyway.”

Artesia nods. “Sure, I'll let you do that. I'm just going to take a nap here if you don't mind.”

“Long day at the office?” Haman jokes, leading Artesia to one of the side rooms as you set off for the Nagato's Captain's quarters.

Finding the door to Karen's stateroom closed tight, you knock twice. The door practically flies open, your Captain clearly expecting someone else.

“Say... oh, Commander,” Karen offers, trying her hardest to reign in her nervousness. “Why're you here?”

“Defrah's fine,” you tell her. “Artesia just came and told us, so we're letting her have some sack time.”

“I see,” Karen sighs in relief. “Good news, then. And it's good you're here, I needed to talk to my mobile suit commander at some point soon anyway.”

“Figured as much,” you admit. “Things have accelerated in the last few days. I'd imagined we'd have some catching up to do. Not so much about the same page, but we could even be reading different books by now.”

Karen waves her arm back towards her room. “Come on in.”

It's comfortable in the Captain's quarters: a nice desk and chairs out in a private office, with the door to a largish bedroom on one side and presumably one to a large bathroom on the other. In theory, Karen could command your whole rag-tag fleet from here.

For my main question. How is our resource stockpiles looking? A-Okay to begin limited MS production?

Has Nina wrestled control of one of the R&D facilities from Clehna and the Good Doktor?

How is the installation and subsequent testing of the new nano-fiber control bundles? Are they interfering with our GATTAI?

Has the engineering team looked into producing a Crysis Nanosuit for our OldTypes using the fiber bundles from the material Nina cooked up? That shit could help increase the survivability of your average grunt pilot significantly. Help them match the insane reaction speed of NTs.

I assume that we will be starting with a general force overview, followed by what support we have managed to obtain thus far, mostly in the form of manufacturing, resources and personnel... followed by potential/expected support ending with current intel on Titans, Axis and Mars...

"So you know where we're headed, right?" Karen begins, sitting back behind her desk. "Take a seat, Dom. We'll be here a while."

"Yeah," you reply as you sit across from her. "We're heading for Dakar."

"Most of our crew never learned dead reckoning in training," Karen tells you. "No need for it. It's not surprising our pilots would know by now, though. You told anyone else?"

You shake your head. "If you didn't announce it, you have a reason. The last thing you need is for me to start the scuttlebutt running."

"We'll need you all on deck," Karen continues. "What've we got in the stables?"

You rap your fingers loudly on the desk. "ALICE? Bring up schematics for Project Thirty-Two."

Karen raises one red eyebrow at what she's seeing. "Interesting. This Anaheim's work?"

You nod. "The Lilium-class machines would be streamlined, removing the chest cannons in favor of shoulder-mounted quad-barreled nineties. The funnels have been moved to the inside surfaces of the hip armor and decreased in size. All that makes more room for the new cockpit."

"And what's going on with that?" Karen presses. "I was hearing some scuttlebutt myself, to the tune of a 'better' psycommu?"

You nod happily. "Lucette and Nina aren't as tight-lipped as they should be, but no matter. It's what the techs are calling a "bio-sensor". It should give the pilots and weapons officers better control. And the room saved elsewhere through streamlined cooling and power routing systems should let us eventually switch over to the new muscle-fiber tech."

"Sounds great," Karen agrees, picking up on your enthusiasm. "And the other team configurations?"

"ALICE, bring up our new roster please."
(1/2)
>>
>>36616458
Sounds like a more robust and moddable GM-III if they're continuing the Lilium line of suits. Drop the shoulder vulcans to shed more weight and add hardpoints for weapons and grenades.
>>
>>36616458
You give Karen a few seconds to look things over for herself. "Our second team will be four machines led by Lieutenant Sheen's Mark-II. It's tweaked for all-round performance. We've been working on setting up a pair of modded Kampfers to round out the team, but we don't have a suit for MacKenzie yet. I've got Lucette on that."

"Sounds like a powerful main combat unit," Karen nods approvingly. "I assume you'll be keeping your Lilium team in a response role?"

You nod. "Yeah. We can engage at any range, anywhere on the battlefield, and get there quick. As awesome as we are at shock value, we're better deployed flexibly, as you know."

Karen grins. "True. And I see there's a third team now? That the triplets?"

"It is. Their Tusche Schwarz units have massive indirect and direct fire support ability. I attached the Val Varo to that unit as well. Ilia seems attached to them, and she'd be able to move them around quicker and support them at mid to close range."

"And the rest of the fleet?" you press. "I've got command authority over our wings, but the Bellau Wood in particular's a complete mystery."

"I transferred the one capable unit there to the Alexandria-class," Karen tells you. "It's a mixed bag. They need some reinforcements bad... even just plain old GMs would do if it comes to it."

"I have to ask," you admit plainly, "why exactly are we going to Dakar, again? That whole area is a hotbed of Titans air-capable units."

"I've made a decision," Karen replies, resting her chin against her fist as she looks you in the eye. Her voice is firm and her mind certain. "It's about damn time someone spoke up about how fucked the whole situation in the Earth Sphere is. If there's ANY chance at minimizing the damage from the coming war we have to act now, in a big way."

"And I think you and I both know that war WILL come now. The colonies won't take news of an attempted gassing quietly. Opposition to Earth rule will rise, regardless of whether the Titans take official blame for the event. Titans will crack down on that opposition even harder than they tried to do at Libot, and we can't let that happen."

"I have faith in Artesia's persuasive abilities," you tell Karen. "But if Titans makes a move to interfere?"

"Then we fight them off," Karen replies. "People will be all too willing to take a harsh response by Titans as proving our point: especially if their escalation endangers civilians or the Assembly itself."

>Drop in on South's Team

>>36617201
South and Kou have really gotten short shrift since they came aboard, you figure, and you're still not sure how they're going to deploy themselves in the coming days.

"I'm gonna go talk to South for a while," you tell Karen as you rise to your feet. "Unless you have some other business with me, ma'am?"

For a second or two it seems as if Karen does indeed have something else to tell you... but after wrestling with it, she decides to keep whatever it was to herself.

"No, Dom. I don't have anything else just now."

"Well, if that changes you know where to find me."

A few salutes greet you in the halls as you find your way down to a room you've honestly never even seen in use: a smaller ready room just aft of the portside MS hangar. Strange as it seems that's where South is staked out for the time being.

"This ship is BIG," you announce as you enter the room, greeted by a toothy grin from your old friend. "I forgot we even had this ready room."

"Yeah, seems we've made this our home for now, O'Hara," South replies, motioning you to the couch across from Uraki.

"It even has gravity!" Kou exclaims. "Magnetic repulsion of some kind, sir?"

You nod. "That's right, Uraki. How'd you guess?"

"There's a bit of a hum... almost like those above-ground powerlines we had back at Woomera, but quieter," he explains. "It's different from the engines."

That's actually kind of impressive, and even more unusually you're not loathe to admit it.

"Good ears," you grant him. "You get used to it. So, South... you planning to stick around, or move yourself and Kou over to the Tel Aviv? They could probably use you."

South nods in agreement. "I figured that, yeah. Soon as we make orbit I'd like to join up with what's left of my old team."

"They still seem... okay," you tell him, noticing a worried frown creasing South's face. "They took it rough when they found out what they'd been ordered to do, but their reaction was telling."
(1/2)
>>
>>36617702
"That's good to hear," South replies with a tired sigh. "I was worried they might have gotten tied up in something truly nasty."

"Sounds like it could have been way worse," Kou adds. "And Keith was fine too?"

"Held his own from the look of it," you tell him.

"Good for him," South declares. "But still, can't help but wonder..."

South falters for a moment, trying to come up with a way to broach the subject.

"... where'd I get the ship?" you finish, guessing his mind.

South nods grimly. "You have this habit of turning up with bigger and better toys than everyone else, but this is on a whole different level."

You explain at some detail the train of events that led you to come into possession of the Nagato: starting with the apparent murder of the Doctor, the subsequent investigations into the activities of the shadowy Vist Foundation, and ending in your meeting with Syam Vist himself along with all the revelations that brought. Through the story South remains silent while Kou asks the occasional question: he seems to need reminding of a few basic details, as things like Carya and Catrina's situation have apparently escaped his notice this whole time.

"And so that's the size of it," you conclude. "The powers that be are in the middle of a decades-long, no-holds-barred battle over who gets to decide the future of the human species."

"And so what side do you fall on?" South asks quietly, finally speaking. "Zeon? Republican? Federatation? Jovian?"

You shake your head. "We're not on anyone's side, because none of the politicians giving the orders are on OUR side. Whoever seems the worst at the time will be our enemy for the foreseeable future."

"And you'll decide who that is yourself?" Kou presses.

You shake your head again. "It's a group decision, but you're basically right. We're tired of being used as tools to preserve the power of people who have done nothing to earn their authority or our loyalty."

South eventually nods to himself. "Gotcha, Dominic. The Federation's been pushing some grade-A bull-type shit on all of us for too long, and I guess I can understand how a unit full of Newtypes would be the first to say they've had enough."

"I'll whip the Tel Aviv's teams into shape. Keep us supplied, and I'll make sure we have your back," South tells you, standing to salute.

Kou joins him. "You'll have me and Unit 01 too, sir," he tells you as he raises his hand in salute. "Count on us."

"So," you greet them, "you ready for the big day tomorrow?"

Marida nods. "Miss Ilia was just telling us the plan. We're gonna be on fire support," she recounts. "Since our funnels aren't gonna work."

"Good," you reply. "And you know not to fire unless you have to?"

"There's gonna be lots of civilians nearby," Diana answers.

Cynthia smiles at you. "We know to hold our fire until it becomes necessary."

"I'll be spotting their fire," Ilia adds. "Since the Val Varo's no better in atmo than the girls' funnels are."

You nod. "Then it seems you four are in order. Are you nervous?"

Ilia shrugs at you noncommittally. "I'd be lying if I said I wasn't, but we've got the best technology and the best people on the job. What it comes down to is whether the fools at the Assembly will listen to Miss Artesia."

"Wasn't Miss Haman going too? And Lady Mineva?" Diana asks you.

>Haman's staying with me.
>Haman will be connected to Artesia's tablet, so she can say her piece from the cockpit.
>That's right, Haman will be with them in the Assembly. My team's job will be close cover and support of the entry teams.

We're in atmosphere, having Haman manage the funnels is pointless. And we don't even really need her for coordinating docking anymore, now that Aubrey's awakened her abilities. It won't harm our effectiveness to have her accompany Artesia. I'm less certain about bringing Mineva along, though, that seems unnecessary. And I don't really want to take advantage of her as a figurehead, that happened too much in canon for me to be comfortable with it here.

I'm guessing that nobody stuck it out, but 4chan was down for more than two hours last night. Kinda put a damper on things.

The thread has been archived, so I plan to be back later tonight to pick up where I had to leave off. As I've said on Twitter, I'll be starting at 8:15pm, PST: staggering it with my other quest by fifteen minutes to get through what I had planned for this thread that just never happened.

Hope to see some of you then.

Color me impressed. Sorry to have kept you waiting for nothing.

The headcount is probably too low right now to really continue, and I've already committed publicly to running a second thread later. Otherwise I might have tried to continue.
