Welcome back to Mysteries of the Atlas Quest! Last time: The Empire marches on Nolan! Winter is somehow involved? What does the old elf know? All this and more this time on Mysteries of the Atlas Quest!

>Anai has 5 Experience points.

Another day, another disaster. You’re honestly not surprised at this point; trouble definitely seems to have an unhealthy interest in you. You made good your escape from the city on top of your trusty steed, Sesmu, with the two elves and Winter in tow. He and the old elf trot along beside you on his horse, while you have the girl with you. You still have them bound, and the night air is crisp as the mage still lies unconscious against your back. A low fog hangs over the road and the moors are peaceful and silent.

You are Anai, an Atlas-user, and this is your story.
>The elves have suggested you travel South to their forest home, do you comply or choose another destination?

Winter shifts uncomfortably in the saddle. "Well, not sure how welcome I'd be there, but I guess the old man can vouch for me. It'd be a good staging ground to travel from though."

The old elf nods and almost reluctantly agrees. "Summer will raise no hand against you if I command otherwise. I can't promise anything about the King though."

Wonder why Winter seems so unfomfortable, maybe it has something to do with that the old man said earlier about his lineage?

"Alright, but your sword stays with me." you say with a warning tone.

"You drive a hard yet fair bargain, Anubian, but I agree to your terms. My days with a sword are surely over in any case." Winter turns and cuts the rope binding the old man's hands.

"There, you are free, and my name is Anai thank you. What is with people and refusing to learn names lately?" you pout.

"Very well Anai, my name is Niccolo da Foreste, chief commander of the King's shocktroops. I do not know why this is unknown to you, but throughout the realm there are two kingdoms of elves, the Summer court, and the Winter Court. For millenia the two have warred with eachother, for reasons forgotten to all but our monarchs. My king, Cerunel, holds dominion over the elves of Summer; while Lady Winter, Aunviel holds sway over the other court. Is there anything else you would like to know?"

>What say?

>>36628193
This lands is foreign to me I was brought here against my will then given a magic book and told to go do whatever I pleased. Anything else should know so I do not offend?
>>
>>36628271

“Yeah well I don’t exactly have many memories beyond a couple days ago, all I know is I was dumped out of one of those blue tunnels with this Atlas book and a bag that never gets full. Anything I should know so I don’t offend people?” you ask, shrugging.

Niccolo looks puzzled for a minute, then laughs. “Just don’t call us knife-ears, and you should be fine.”

Seems that’s the end of that line of questioning.
>Ask Winter why the hell he’s named after a court of elves.
>Ask about the jackbooted government thugs with the rifles and racial purity overtones
>Ask why the elves were attacking Nolan

If not, ask about the thugs.
>>
>We are taking elves to their home lands

shouldn't we release them at this point to avoid becoming a pincushion the moment we walk into an elven patrol?
Plus, we can start studying with their mage and cultivate some better relationship...

also, are we really running away? we could join them as assassins and start some city guerilla warfare. at the very least i want to sneak in at night and slit the throat of that governor
>>
>>36628619
actually, return their weapons too. i would rather they try (and fail) to slit our throat at night than to have them order an entire army to kill us once we get back to elftown.
>>
>>36628495

>Thugs first then

"Speaking of racial slurs, who were the jerks in the black pointing guns at everyone? I'd like to know who I humiliated back there." you laugh.

Niccolo turns to speak but Winter interrupts, speaking in an angry growl. "Subjects of his Highness, Anton Khorvair the First, or as he's better known, The Burning King. He used to be a smalltime lord in the Northern reach, in the city of Gairech. That changed when he gained a new adviser, and industry exploded. Those weapons are how he's taken every territory from Gairech and the North Sea to the edge of the White Curtain just up the river from Nolan."

Niccolo nods. "Yes, that is why we were weakening Nolan, so that when he took it it would slow his progress while they rebuild the infrastructure, unfortunately what was supposed to be a simple trade ship had a fully armed battalion to meet us."

New plan. we sneak in and steal the plans/kidnap/seduce a gunsmith or whatever. and then use atlas to port back with that person and the plans to the elves. give them the plans, then start giving them to everyone else too.
We can't undo that nation having that tech, but we can spread it around so they aren't the only one.
>>
>>36628847

>sorry got delayed
"So wait, how do you know all this Winter? Why are you named after a court of elves? What did Niccolo mean when he said you'd been touched by Winter? And where'd you get that bag anyway?"

Winter scowls, then sighs and pulls a book, perfectly identical to your own out from his bag. "Because I'm an Atlas user too, and I'm originally from Gairech. Unlike you my memories came back a few years ago. Like you said, you don't choose where you end up, and I happened to end up being in service to Lady Winter as a knight. I ran away though." he looks away with something resembling shame on his face. Well that explains at least some of this.

Your ears droop a little as the mood turns serious. "I'm sorry, that sounds really rough. How long did it take to get your memories back though?"

"I guess a few months. I wandered around the towns along the White Curtain mountain range. It was gradual at the beginning, just small things like old habits and training. Then one day something triggered the full impact and I knew who I was. I was already a Winter knight by then, so I didn't go home, and just tried to escape the Empire and Winter alike." Seems like he's still intent on hiding something from you.

"Well I mean can't anybody stop those Empire guys? Can't be hard to steal their tech, I mean, I got that asshole's pistol."

He shakes his head. "You've probably only got a few shots. The ammunition is produced solely in the Northern territories, because nobody has found deposits of the ore they use to manufacture it anywhere else."

>Anything else?
>Added to Pastebin, Pistol, 6 shots. 6 flat damage ranged weapon.

>Damage adds to the difficulty of the tank save, you still only take one hp of damage per failed save.

Winter shrugs again. "I dunno, do I look like an engineer or a mage? Ask the sleepy fire mage about stuff like that."

You hear a huff behind you as the mage stops feigning sleep. "Maria, and I do not tolerate insult from Winters, let alone humans." Niccolo sighs, clearly exasperated. "I apologize for Maria's behavior, the love for war is healthy in the young. Maria! They have saved our lives and you will respect them, even if you still refuse to like them."

She pouts.

"Alright, well it's getting late, so let's set up camp. As you take first watch Atlas opens up and speaks. "Well hello there Miss Anai, I see you've made some new friends."

You twist your face in mock thought for a second. "Does that mean the Moon Sage is your father, and I'm your mother?" you ask puzzled. Atlas seems a little flustered by that statement and stutters out "Uhh,well, yes I suppose that's a fairly good metaphor, though I doubt Winter would like to be a mother in that scenario." You laugh at the tiny blue man's confusion. "Well I guess he better be willing to take responsibility then!" he blanches further. "Miss Anai! This metaphor has gone rather far enough I think." You continue your giggling as you lean back against Sesmu, who is dozing heavily despite the cold due to his thick and fluffy orange fur. "Sorry, sorry," you sigh, "Hey, Atlas, do you know Elvish?"

"Well, not really, though with Niccolo's help I could have a course ready for you overnight. And speaking of my other features, you've unlocked another function. Teleport Lock! This should come in handy if you ever see that Necromancer again." he beams.

You are VICTOR REGINRAVE, protégé to the Khorvan Empire’s Minister of the Interior. You are an accomplished magician in your own right, and serve the empire proudly as a member of the Magical Research and Development Department in the capital city of Gairech. One day your master came to you with a small brown bag and a mysterious book called the Atlas. He gave them to you and assigned you to a new division, the Huntsmen. Your current mission was to use your talents to weaken the Civic Guard of the Kingdom of Nolan, making the planned invasion simple and tidy for the Magistrate. Soon those elves were going to pay for taking your best friend, the Prince of Gairech, Anton Khorvair the Second, away from you. Once Nolan was secure, the king’s armies would march on the White Curtain, home of Lady Winter, and the place your dear friend was last seen.

Unfortunately, your pleasant dinner was interrupted by an insane Anubian with a pet wumpus, and you were nearly killed. You spent the day in an abandoned house on the Western fringe of Nolan, waiting for your target. Captain Scott of the Civic Guard. You wanted to ambush him earlier, and with more minions, but the family squatting here would have to do. Your corpse dogs lie in wait inside the house as you sit on the roof watching for the patrol.

>Main motivation, SCIENCE! and Finding Anton.

You sit and think, your mind wandering over memories of Anton, and how just a few years ago you were sparring with him in the courtyard of the keep. Well you say sparring, but really it was just you getting knocked on your ass by his clearly superior swordsmanship, even if they were wooden. You were never much of a fighter, you chuckle. You wonder where he is now, if he's still alive, and what those icy bastards are doing to him. You shake the thought out of your mind and try to think of more pleasant thoughts. That Anubian woman. Huh. You know about the Anubians, your particular necromantic tendencies are fairly ill-received among them, being a culture that reveres death and considers it sacred. How silly. Still though, what in the unloving hell was an Anubian doing alone, all the way up here? You're pretty sure she had one of these books too, which isn't unheard of, all the Huntsmen had one. She had a strange air about her though, not stoic like the Anubian ambassadors you'd met before. She was more like one of the Northern people, the sheer joy in her eyes as she was about to stab you gave you chills. It reminded you of yourself, the feeling you got when you electrocuted those guards into puddles of flesh ready to be molded.

Yes. She was truly fascinating. She had power, grace, and you could even see a modest amount of magical talent dripping off of her. She dodged your attacks like it was child's play. Like Anton swatting aside your sword effortlessly then bopping you on the head. You had to have her. First you would use your magic to kill her without damaging the body too much. It would be a shame to break such a beautiful puppet.

No...No that's not right, at least half of this fascination was her mind! If you simply controlled her, there would be none of her fire, her THRILL. It was what made this beauty perfect! She was the perfect aberration. You had to find a different way.

But how?

Think about it

>Yes, she truly was fASSinating.

>>36633476
>I don't know how to court women, I'll ask Atlas, maybe he'll know.

failing that, or possibly resultantly since atlas's learn from their user
>I'll capture her, eventually she'll learn to love me!

it's worked for every other villain, why not us?

then realize that's silly and we know nothing about women or wooing them and ask Atlas

Raise an army, use it to capture her thereby impressing her with your masculine power, then while she's captured her lay down the smooth talk.

It's clearly a foolproof plan!

Your thoughts dart back and forth between your options, imagining grand scenarios and storybook proposals, even one particularly interesting fantasy about a cloning spell creating piles of her while explosions and dragons roar overhead in the background. However your more scientific mind interjects, 'But Victor, you've never even had an -arranged- marriage, how is any of this realistic!' You had a point. So doing the next best thing, you open up Atlas.

"Atlas, how would you go about courting a lady? I seem to be smitten by a Valkyrie, and find myself at a loss. Suggestions?" you ask grinning ear to ear like a madman. The small red haired man in the book looks up at you in complete and utter shock. "Y-...You what sir? Master Victor I- What are you- How did you- Is it that Anubian woman who almost killed you?" your grin and a nod confirm his suspicions. "Well...I suppose the first step would be...getting to know her? I mean besides the not having her kill you part. Perhaps you should bring some wingmen of the unliving persuasion to your next meeting?"

Eureka! Of course! You're so magnificently charming and powerful it would take no special effort for her to love you, assuming of course you stopped her from being violent! "Thank you Atlas, you are ever the greatest aid a man could ask for!" you beam. Atlas then informs you that the patrol is nearing the house.

"Ah perfect, my wingmen!"

oho, so atlas can be given to other people?
interesting.
I wonder what happens when an atlas user captures the atlas of someone else (I am imagining atlas cannibalism)

I too want to know about this.

>>Wants to make us his puppet because beutiful
>our Joker wants to bang us
I am pretty sure the puppet thing means killing anais and turning her into a zombie...
... although that actually does not preclude banging her

no, zombie would be the easy way out. he wants Anai not a puppet
>>
>>36634295
that was because we chose to combine options. had just puppet won, he would want her as a zombie sex slave

While it's true Victor was not selected to be an Atlas user in the traditional way, his Atlas is now attuned to him. To him however it isn't notable, because all of the Huntsmen were approached a similar way by the Minister. If Anai and Winter ever find out about how he got his Atlas, or vice versa, there will be much confusion which Atlas will clear up.

Victor is now firmly against killing and controlling her, since that wouldn't be the same. However imprisonment and stalking are toooootally fair game. Pic related marginally.

why do you guess cannabalism? I'm legitimately curious.

Cannabalism is a joke, I was thinking more along the lines of draining its energy and leaving it a non magical item (although actually eating it with teeth would be funnier and also legitimate)
The reason for it is common fantasy Tropes. I have seen enough similar scenarios in fantasy that I simply get the feeling that the winnter's atlas would "consume" the powers of the defeated atlas to give an XP boost.

So, like, Zatch Bell or something?

what if the only way to get the mystery lvl 50 power is by absorbing power from other atlas?
